Hair of similar length and shape is seen elsewhere in the work of William Blake — in his sketches of Daphne, the Ancient Greek naiad; a strange detail to say the least.5 In fact, William was especially fond of the Daphne myth, as attested by Bunsho Jugaku in his study of Blake's notebook.6

Certain biographical details link these two personalities in curiously specific ways. William was the third of seven children; Daphne is the third eldest member of the group. Since two of William's siblings died in infancy, his family numbered only five children — the number of the Scooby-Doo gang. William had a troubled love life; Daphne is shown to have similar problems.78 William was physically bullied by boys from his school; Daphne suffers at the hands of villains, especially by being kidnapped.9 William was a feminist who believed strongly in the equality of the sexes; Daphne shows similar beliefs and is portrayed as Shaggy's equal, just as Velma is Fred's. In fact, William was characterised as a "proto-hippie" by the New York Times,10 and his poem Auguries of Innocence is a powerful ode to free love. He also had an "affectionate relationship" with dogs.11 He was fond of dance and night-time (eg. The Dance of Albion and The Tyger, respectively) — both commonly seen in Scooby-Doo.12 Daphne even visited William Blake's birthplace — London — in one episode.13

But Tikki! — I hear unconvinced Tikki Troops cry — is Scooby-Doo not about proving that ghosts do not exist? How does this fit with Blake claiming to have conversed with ghosts and angels in his visions? To this I say: do you not remember The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo, in which Daphne talks to ghosts, just as William did? Indeed this show features more allusions to Blake. The most notable is the preponderant number of pairs — in just the first episode, we see two skulls in the opening, two bull heads on Vincent's door, two ghosts (Weerd and Bogel), two engines malfunctioning, two oxen pulling carts, and more.14 This is no doubt in reference to William Blake's grave, which is memorialised by two separate gravestones.

In his poem Eternity, William Blake writes:

He who binds himself to a joy Does the winged life destroy He who kisses the joy as it flies Lives in eternity's sunrise

He clearly did the latter, because he undeniably lives on today "in eternity's sunrise", through his paintings, through his poetry — and through Scooby-Doo.

Only a gentler kind of sleep (Kylux, post-TRoS)

A fic about Kylux as Force ghosts, because after The Rise of Skywalker we all need a happier kind of ending.

Hux is sort of fun, now that there's no power to fight over, and no possible way to kill each other. Seeing his angry little face day in and day out makes Ben feel like there still is a constant in his life - or in his death. Something he can count on, even if it's just someone endlessly miffed about his mere existence. "I did betray you, you know that right?" says Hux, perplexed.

Ben floats up and takes a seat on a thick tree branch. He's taking care to stay almost invisible, and he's far enough away from the firelight that the three people around it can't see him.

They've built a bonfire and Dameron is roasting some kind of meat on it, the other two looking on with hunger in their eyes, telling him to hurry up. Ben can't quite smell the meat cooking, but at the same time he can see and feel every molecule of it, every last particle making up the fat and the gentle smoke rising from it.

FN-2187 - no, Finn - has an arm around Dameron's waist and seems to be close enough to restrict movement and be more of a bother than of use. He's telling some joke Ben can't quite hear, and they're all laughing, encased in their little bubble of careful happiness against the dark of the night.

Ben's eyes stray to Rey, and there's the customary roil of sadness somewhere around where his stomach once was. He can see her in half-profile, her eyes crinkling with her laughter and her hair in unruly wisps, soft brown turning to red in the fireglow and black where the light doesn't touch her.

He could go join them, Ben thinks. If he tried very hard, they might even see him, she might even take him by the arm and pull him to sit on the ground beside her.

Her hand might pass through him, though, and he knows the fierce light and the devouring darkness would make him a pale imitation of what he once was, fleeting and feeble. He doesn't want to go to her like that.

It's not that Ben regrets what he did. Fighting Palpatine and saving Rey were some of the best things he ever did, the best things he ever would do. He keeps his eyes on her, seeing how happy she looks. No longer burdened by any unreasonably heavy fate or purpose, she can focus on helping the galaxy along on its way to healing in little ways that she can. She's happy and mostly safe… and he can't quite be sorry.

He does regret not being able to sit there beside her, not being able to gradually learn to know her better. He regrets not knowing if one day they might have been something precious like real friends, or even something more, like he'd wanted to. Sometimes he still thinks he can feel her lips on his, cool and chapped and rough, and it makes him miss life.

Still, he doesn't regret his death. He'd been so tired for so long, and now he finally gets to rest.

It feels good to be a part of the Force, wholly now, and without the pull to either side, dark or light. He still belongs to both in equal measures, but somehow the two sides have an easier time existing as one when he's no longer made of flesh and bones. Only spirit, now, and it… it feels like peace. Like forgiveness.

The fire's almost died and Finn has fallen asleep with his head on Rey's shoulder, when Ben catches a glimmer to his left. He turns, an expectant frown already on his face, waiting.

It takes Hux longer to materialize than it's ever taken Ben, even in the beginning.

"Hello, Ren", Hux says evenly, settling to sit beside him. Ben can see the rough bark of the branch through Hux, and it still feels disconcerting. Ben suspects it will for a long time.

"Hux."

"I still can't fathom why you choose to spend so much of your time watching over them." Hux is in a huff like he always is, red hair turned pale by his ghostly state, looking even thinner than he looked in life, deep shadows under his eyes.

"I still can't fathom why you choose to spend yours bothering me", Ben says, though he doesn't really mind, not any more.

"I'll have you know I do plenty of things without you", Hux scoffs. "I like how easy it is to go to distant places and just… listen."

Ben knows Hux does that. Walks into deep forests and barren wastelands and puts his hands to the ground, feeling the Force move in everything around him. Floats around in the cold expanse between stars and listens to the hum of the universe. He could never hear it when he lived, so it must be shocking, to discover he really is only a tiny speck in the great flow of the Force.

"I went to Arkanis", Hux continues quietly.

"You did?" Ben looks at him more closely. Hux is squeezing his hands tightly together on his lap, biting his lip. The skin seems to lose colour, though it didn't have any to begin with. He's still wearing his uniform, even now, though it isn't pristine like it always was, Before. His hat is nowhere to be seen, his collar unbuttoned, and there's a scorched hole on the left leg of his trousers, and another on the chest of his jacket.

"I went into the sea to see the monsters."

That means something to Hux, but Ben doesn't know why. He's only been able to find out that Hux's father had a school on Arkanis, and that Hux has bad memories from the place.

"What were they like?" he asks, in the same quiet tone Hux is using.

"Just big fish", Hux laughs, bitter for some reason. "I suppose we're all ultimately less than."

Less than what, Ben doesn't ask. He knows.

Below them, Rey is falling asleep too, leaning her cheek on Finn's hair.

Ben could try to visit her dreams, it might even be easier than going to her in the waking world and trying to hold onto a form she could see and hear.

He doesn't. He'd be a pale copy. Less than, just like Hux said.

"Guess we are", he whispers. Shoots Hux a lopsided smirk.

"Though you're more than I thought, General. I tried so hard to sense the faintest echo of the Force in you, when we were Snoke's, and I never found anything. How did you hide it, all these years?"

Hux laughs. "Do you think I would have hidden it, if there was even the slightest chance I could have gotten back at you somehow? Wouldn't I have weaponized it if I'd known I had it?"

Ben huffs out a laugh. "You definitely would have. I have to admire you then; being so stubborn you became strong in the Force at the last possible moment by sheer will."

"Honestly?" Hux asks, smiling as well, though he's more rueful. "Yes. If I couldn't be Supreme Leader, I'm happy as hell you couldn't either, nor Palpatine."

"You'd rather take the 'lawless chaos?'" Ben still remembers how passionate Hux always was about controlling the whole galaxy, and how ardently he wanted to give it his own kind of order in return, even if it was a peace kept only by fear of him and his Starkiller base.

"Better lawless chaos with no leader than lawful chaos under you or stars know what kind of utter madness under Palpatine." Hux has gone all huffy, though there's a smile tugging at a corner of his mouth.

Ben chuckles and looks back at the three sleepy friends around the fire. Dameron's eyes are half closed and he seems in danger of tipping forward and frying his nose in the embers.

Ben waves a hand, and across the clearing, a twig snaps on the ground. It's not a loud noise, but Dameron sits up, alert. He sits quietly for a moment, looking around, hand on a blaster at his hip. When nothing happens, he turns to prod Finn and Rey awake, and despite their grumbling, he herds them away towards the command centre and their beds.

Ben and Hux watch them go in silence, until their voices can no longer be heard.

"Don't you think it's bad for you to lurk like this?" Hux asks quietly.

"What do you mean?"

"Being alone and dreaming about things you can't have. About living people and living things."

Ben sighs, pulling a leg up onto the branch and hugging the knee to his chest. "I guess", he concedes, "But I like it, too. Knowing she's okay."

Hux hums, not saying anything for a long time. He mirrors Ben's position, seemingly unconsciously, but pulls his other leg up too.

"You're not with them anymore, though." Hux seems to still enjoy stating the obvious, hurtful things as much as he always did.

"No", Ben admits. "I'll cling for a little while more, If you don't mind." His tone becomes sardonic, but he doesn't exactly mean to show he's affected.

"At least I'm not all alone", he continues, jostling Hux none too gently with his shoulder. "There's always you."

"There's always me", Hux concedes, chuckling and shaking his head. "It's still not good for you", he repeats, clearly just to be annoying.

"Don't you think it's bad for you to always go looking at your forests and seas and asteroid fields all alone?" Ben asks him.

Hux huffs out a breath, surprised. "I do listen to people too, sometimes. I just… I want to learn to know the Force. It's unsettling, not knowing what I'm made of now."

"You were always made of it, we all are", Ben says, almost gently. Hux makes a face.

"Smartass. Easy for you to say, since you know everything about it."

"Not everything", Ben laughs. Not nearly.

"You laugh a lot nowadays", Hux muses, looking like the thought annoys him.

"I guess I have fewer reasons not to. Less to worry about."

Hux tilts his head. "Must be nice."

"What are you worrying about, then?"

Hux looks down, his fingers absentmindedly picking at the scorched hole in his trousers. The translucent skin underneath the fabric seems flawless, no blaster wounds in sight.

"Why are you still wearing those, by the way? It's been months."

It's hard to say how many; Ben and Hux aren't tied to existence and time the same way living beings are, and sometimes it's easier to lose shape for a time, just floating in the current, asleep almost.

Hux makes an embarrassed sound. "Because I don't know how not to. I've been angry about how you're in a different fancy robe everytime I see you."

Ben snorts, and then laughs harder at Hux's offended expression. He reaches out a hand and lays it on Hux's chest over the hole. The fabric knits back together as he tells it to, and Hux's chest rises and falls quickly in a breath he doesn't need. He feels warm to the touch, like nothing has for a long time, his useless ghost heart beating a staccato rhythm near Ben's hand.

"I could teach you", Ben offers, surprising himself as much as Hux.

"I have no intention of becoming your… padawan", Hux spits the word like it tastes revolting.

"Your choice", Ben smiles, enjoying Hux's sneer.

"Kylo Ren", Hux hisses. "How can you still be the most irritating thing in my life after I've fucking died?"

The name is unfamiliar now, but at the same time hearing it from Hux feels like coming home. He won't tell Hux to call him Ben; Hux probably wouldn't obey him in the first place, and besides, a part of him likes keeping that tie to his past.

"It's a gift", he hums. "How about it?"

"Fine", Hux growls and grabs Ben's hand from his chest, putting it on the hole in his trousers. "Show me."

Ben can feel his warmth under his palm, through the fabric and on the patch if bare skin. He can feel the way this strange half-life of theirs pulses through Hux, and the way he trembles just the tiniest bit under the touch. Icy blue eyes meet his, fiercely, and Ben smiles.

"I will."

Support to two largest populist parties at Italy's last general election, by province.

Some background:

these are the overall results of Italy's last general election, held on the 4th of March, 2018. Data are taken from the official page of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and are mostly based on local voting constituencies, which might slightly differ from actual provinces but are generally a good enough proxy.

The two main explicitly populist parties, Lega Nord and Movimento 5 Stelle, were also the election's main gainers. The former got 18% of total votes; an originally secessionist party with strong roots in Lombardy and Veneto, it has recently turned into a nationalist party à la FN and went to the elections with a heavily Eurosceptic, anti-immigrant, "anti-leftism" platform, therefore managing to spread outside its historical strongholds. The latter, which was the single party with the most votes (around 33% of total) is somewhat of a catch-all anti-establishment party, which overlaps with Lega Nord on some issues but greatly differs on others: while Lega Nord's most trustworthy supporters are small entrepreneurs from the deep North, 5Stelle's most represented demography are unemployed, discouraged and economically struggling individuals who tend to be concentrated in the South. That said, it should be pretty clear that M5S still got lots of votes in the North, even in Milan where it was the largest single party with almost a fourth of total votes. Its platform is quite difficult to understand even for the Italians as it seems to change on a daily basis according to whatever issue is perceived as most important in that very moment, but one could broadly describe it as anti-something: anti-Euro, anti-establishment, anti-corruption, anti-big corporations, anti-vaccines, anti-neoliberalism, and so on. Environmentalism, degrowth, direct democracy, conspiracy theories, all tend to converge within the 5Star Movement.

As you can see in the map, populists got at least 40% of all votes in most Italian provinces, except for Tuscany (an historical center-left stronghold) and a handful of exceptional cases in the South. Within that overall support, though, a clear split can be seen between the deep rural North, where the main populist party is Lega Nord, and the rest of the country (including large cities in the North) where the main populist party is M5S.

The map represents the overall support for these two populist parties and, within that %, how much of it has gone to which one.

If you find the key confusing and difficult to understand, keep in mind that you can pretty much ignore some of the colours as they are only represented by very few provinces. For example, only 6 provinces in the whole country had a <40% overall support for populist parties: 3 are in Tuscany, one is the Aosta Valley in the northwest and the others are 2 provinces in Calabria where the main center-right party (Forza Italia, the party of Berlusconi) still managed to get a significant share of votes. There's also only one province - Salerno, just south of Naples - with an overall support for populist parties between 40 and 45% and at the same time more than 75% of it for M5S.

A significant finding is that provinces tend to be more skewed towards M5S than to Lega. In fact, while Lega didn't manage to get more than 70-71% of the total populist votes anywhere in the country (the most skewed ones are the two Venetian provinces of Vicenza and Treviso, where Lega got around 70% of total populist votes), M5S got more than 80% of total populist votes in several Southern provinces and even more than 90% in places like Naples.

I didn't include Bolzano-Bozen as it is a highly special case: being a German-majority province, Italian parties have historically had a low support there (Lega and 5Stelle only got 20% of the votes, mostly in the city of Bolzano which has an Italian-speaking majority) and its politics are not directly comparable with those of the rest of the country.

Are you familiar with the Skirt Length Theory of economics? It’s the idea that shorter hemlines signal an upward market trajectory, while longer hemlines — like the ones many of us have been sporting for the past several seasons — are a harbinger of bad economy to come. According to Investopedia, the theory was first put forward in 1925, just four years before the advent of the Great Depression, by an economist at the Wharton School of Business. It’s since been largely disproven, and while you shouldn’t redo your investment portfolio (should you have such a thing) based on the whims of fashion designers, to begin with, a lot can be gleaned about a period of time by looking at what those who lived through it were wearing. 

Take, for example, the 1920s, during which the flapper aesthetic, with its dropped waists and abbreviated hemlines, signalled a sense of liberation brought about by new socio-political factors like women getting the vote, leaving home to go work, and frequenting speakeasies. Or the 1960s, when long hair, psychedelic prints, and often the very lack of clothes allowed young people to express their distaste for the Vietnam War, support of civil rights, and rejection of mainstream social norms. Or the punk movement, which took over the UK in the 1970s before spreading to the US and challenged gender norms and beauty standards in favour of anti-authoritarian views expressed via dark colours and heavily distressed garments sometimes held together only by safety pins. While all of these aesthetics have been flattened into deceptively one-dimensional caricatures of themselves, they’ve also provided a simple lens through which to understand what it felt like to be a young person during a given period of time. Only, in 2020, we’re not exactly doing the Charleston in beaded cocktail dresses at speakeasies, or dancing naked and covered in mud at Woodstock. Instead, people will probably look back on this strange time and remember us sending self-deprecating Twitter missives in colour-coordinated sweatsuits at home. 

“Fashion is intrinsically linked to consumer and societal attitudes, it gives us a true reflection of how we live our lives,” says Francesca Muston, VP of fashion at the trend forecasting firm WGSN. And as we are currently living our lives in a pandemic, it makes sense that our fashion reflects that.

Some of the trends that, based on last year’s catwalk reports, might have been en vogue this year were ultimately upended by realities including not just the pandemic but a widespread reckoning on systemic racism, and an economic crisis that has betrayed the long-festering flaws in our social safety net — or lack thereof. For example, in October, Vogue predicted that among the nine most important trends to emerge from the SS20 catwalks were ‘70s-style suiting, bias draping, and trench coats. While those are all things you can indeed find right now anywhere from Net-a-Porter to Zara, they aren’t what most people are really wearing, and they certainly won’t be what this year is remembered for fashion-wise. (Other trends from the list, like lingerie-inspired pieces and recycled fabrics, have fared better in our more intimate, more socially conscious new world.) 

Fascinatingly, Muston says the biggest trend WGSN was predicting for 2020 was something called “Considered Comfort,” which she defines as “a trend which was centered around the home, and something we’d been tracking for around four years. Even before the pandemic stranded us all at home, fashion had been headed in an overall comfier direction for some time — the athleisure category has held strong for years, while big, walkable sneakers and dad-on-vacation-inspired sandals have overtaken sleek high heels as the footwear du jour for influencer-types. Best of all, there’s now a comfortable look for every kind of homebound individual. While a few years it ago, it felt like athleisure was mostly limited to the kind of skin-tight, all-black Alexander Wang ensembles favoured by impossibly cool people in L.A. and New York, or the Lululemon yoga pants beloved by suburban mums, these days, you can choose your go-to when it comes to the clothes that can take you seamlessly from bedroom to bodega (and also to all the Zoom calls in between). 

During the early days of coronavirus, back when being confined to our apartments for weeks on end still felt weird instead of disturbingly routine, Google searches for tie-dye shot through the roof, peaking higher in June than at any other point in the past five years, despite the fact that fashion mags have been heralding its return since about 2018, when it was shown on the catwalks at Chanel, Proenza Schouler, and R13. In its most 2020 iteration — the tie-dyed sweatsuit — it evokes a sunny California chic that’s easy for pretty much anyone to pull off. For those with room and time for activities, tie-dye is also a good DIY project, which as you may recall is something many of us were desperate for, back in sourdough-era quarantine. 

Personally, one of my only post-coronavirus clothing purchases, aside from the silk face masks I can’t seem to stop buying, has been a tie-dye sweatshirt from Agolde that I had on loan from Rent the Runway, couldn’t bear to return, and purchased for 60% off. My attachment to this object betrays what I think is another reason for tie-dye’s increased popularity: its colourful nature and connection to the past (hippies! the ‘90s! childhood!) reminds us of better days. “Tie-dyeing has been popular for decades and so, for many people, it also has an element of nostalgia. Nostalgia reminds us of a time gone by when things were better than they are now —usually in our imaginations only!” shares Professor Carolyn Mair Ph.D., a behavioural psychologist and the author of The Psychology of Fashion. 

But, if your vibe is less “crunchy-cool camp counsellor” and more “fashion-forward Victorian ghost,” there’s another quarantine fashion contender. Prairie dresses, an alternately beloved and derided style popularised by some of biggest brands of the moment, like Ganni, Brock Collection, and Batsheva (not to mention last year’s blockbuster remake of Little Women), are a little too fussy for fielding emails from your couch, but naturally, they have a successor. The Nap Dress, so named by Nell Diamond of the home goods brand Hill House, refers to any nightgown-adjacent frock one could alternately wear to bed or, with the right accessories, to a socially-distanced restaurant dinner or day at the park. Hill House’s cotton versions, which come in various patterns and styles and will set you back about £125, have been so popular they’re often sold-out, but other brands like Doen, Sleeper, and Christy Dawn have similar options, as do, suddenly, ASOS and Target. Dr. Mair posits nap dresses will be among 2020’s most memorable trends, citing their versatility, casual femininity, and the fact that they work on a range of body types. “We tend to feel more ‘dressed up’ when wearing a dress than other garments, and so choosing a comfortable style of dress during the pandemic makes perfect sense,” she explains. 

Of course, the article of clothing that’s actually most likely to be remembered in association with this period of time is probably the face mask, that humble piece of cloth that has come to represent both the vaguely apocalyptic vibe of this moment, and the ingenuity of brands and individuals to turn that into something fun and self-expressive. (As well as a deep-seated political divide that can now touch even the most seemingly innocuous of objects.) Before becoming a literal must-have item, masks had briefly appeared on the catwalks of edgy brands like Marine Serre and Richard Quinn, mostly symbolising concerns about pollution and surveillance, but perhaps also vaguely gesturing at a future: a then-unknown forthcoming pandemic that experts have reportedly been predicting for years. No one really knows how long we’ll be required to wear masks for, but, already, they’ve become an integral — and symbolic and polarising — part of our everyday lives. It seems likely they’ll outlast their specific utility, getting a second life as a fashion accessory. 

While some of us are itching for any excuse to dress up — personally, I’ve been known to show up to socially distanced outdoor hangs in attire that could easily work at a dressy casual wedding — in 2020, clothing has become less about impressing other people, and more of a thing to swaddle ourselves in as we watch the world around us shatter into a million pieces. It’s about physical comfort, yes, but it’s also about emotional comfort via familiarity, and finding things that make us feel like, if not the best version of ourselves, then at least a version of ourselves that can handle all that’s being thrown at us on a daily basis while still maintaining a bit of who we were before, and who we hope to be after. 

Those in-the-know may have called that from a mile away, too: “Of course, a global health pandemic did not feature in our trends, but many of the emotions which are associated with it did. For example, the idea of protectionism, fear, and the need for optimism which we address in a trend for 2020, called Designing Emotion,” says Muston. 

And what will our children, when looking back on pictures of us from this time, while we regale them with tales of canned bean-hoarding and Netflix marathons as an unlikely form of heroism, take away from these looks? It could inspire a level of fascination from future generations, not unlike the way many millennials grew up idolising the revolutionary glamour of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. Whether kids in 25 years will be sifting through thrift shops for authentic early-‘20s nightgowns and face coverings remains to be seen, but the pictures we take now will be there in the history books, like all the things we once learned about that seemed so far away. 

When they see us, in our masked smiles, our colour-drenched clothes that barely saw the light of day, and our graphic T-shirts demanding the better and more equitable future in which they hopefully reside, they’ll see people doing the best they can in an uncertain time. They’ll see people using self-expression as a tool. They’ll see that trends can be about so much more than fitting in — that in fact, sometimes, they’re simply the best way to come together when we’re all so far apart.

The T495s is a new addition to the Lenovo ThinkPad series and the company is representing as a business laptop. Like other Lenovo laptops, this is a budget device that promises both durability and productivity. It is an affordable choice for business professionals and carries some powerful components. We have reviewed this Lenovo ThinkPad laptop to assess its strengths and weaknesses.

The Lenovo ThinkPad T495s is one of those cheap Lenovo laptops that features AMD parts. In order to offer an affordable alternative, Lenovo has loaded the T495s business laptop with the Ryzen Pro processor. Design

Lenovo ThinkPad T495s resembles very much with its predecessor the T490 in terms of design and outer look. It has the same slim design and the base unit features a reinforced magnesium frame. Similarly, the case is made of reinforced fiberglass plastic that has the traditional matte black finish.

Overall, it has a durable chassis with a somewhat conservative look that can withstand knocks and bumps. Lenovo claims that the ThinkPad T495s meet the requirements of military-grade requirements and is testes against more than 200 quality checks. This is an ultra-slim, lightweight business laptop that weighs around 2.82lbs (1.278kg) and has a thin profile of 16.1mm.

Display

Lenovo offers the 14-inch ThinkPad T495s with a variety of display options. The model we tested for performance came with an FHD display with an IPS panel and a screen resolution of 1920 x 1080p. Although the screen panel is 6mm thick, it is stable and capable of protecting the glass against occasional knocks and bumps.

The advertised screen brightness for the T495s is 400 nits which is quite high. However, the brightness may differ depending upon the panel, as Lenovo is buying the panels from four different manufacturers. Nevertheless, the display quality of this Lenovo ThinkPad is convincing as the display content is high and contrast is very sharp.

Thanks to AMD Radeon Vega 10 GPU, the T495s deliver snappy visuals and offer lively colours. The laptop offers the best possible display quality compared to its competitors of the same class.

Keyboard

The keyboard of the ThinkPad 495s is another positive point which is a delight to work on. It is a classic Lenovo keyboard with molulded, curved keys that have appropriate travel distance. This is a backlit keyboard that feels comfortable and we found it helpful for typing work. Moreover, you can turn off the illumination if you want to with the “Fn + Spacebar” short key.

The touchpad is also responsive and offers a smooth gliding experience even across the corners. On the top, there are three red chunky mouse buttons and a red TrackPoint is present in the centre of the keyboard. Business professionals who like to work on the go would find it helpful as the TrackPoint makes things easy when you are sitting in a cramped airline seat.

Connectivity

Lenovo ThinkPad 495s has all the modern ports that you would need to attach peripherals. It houses two Type-A USB 3.1 ports, two Type-C USB ports, a full-size HDMI output and a 3.5mm audio jack port. Additionally, there is an Ethernet port, Kensington lock slot and s smart card slot.

Performance

Lenovo has armed the ThinkPad T495s with AMD components including second-generation AMD Ryzen Pro processor and Radeon Vega graphics. The T495s features quad-core Ryzen 7 Pro CPU that could deliver a maximum clock speed of 4.0GHz. It runs on the Windows 10 Pro operating system and is paired with a massive 16GB RAM to make sure professionals get high-speed performance.

A 256GB SSD storage drive and AMD Radeon Vega 10 GPU further make things easy for you. Lenovo ThinkPad T495s offers much-needed power with a promise of portability and durability. You can run heavy graphics and media editing tools, thanks to Radeon GPU. Whereas, the SSD drive makes sure that you have access to data files in less than a second.

The ThinkPad T495s also let you enjoy heavy 3D games, such as PUBG. You can easily switch between tabs and different programs and won’t experience any lags. Plus, you can watch Netflix with snappy visuals in case you want to soothe your mind.

Battery Life

Lenovo has added a 57Wh battery that it claims can run up to 14 hours, once fully charged. This is a huge claim by the manufacturer and we were able to extract around 11 hours of battery life. Still, this is a pretty impressive performance by a business laptop on a single charge.

Verdict

Lenovo ThinkPad T495s is a nice addition to Lenovo laptops and worth the price. It is loaded with high-end AMD specs that not only offer more power but also keep the price on the lower side. A comfy keyboard, pleasing display, Ryzen pro CPU and Radeon GPU are its strong points. Overall, the ThinkPad T495s is a great option for business professionals who need a lightweight, workhorse at a reasonable price.

Asus ZenBook Duo UX481 Dual Screen Laptop Review

Asus has never been shy about experimenting with form factors. We’ve seen a whole string of series 2-in-1 devices, the iconic Padfone series, the dual-screen Taichi, the desktop-tablet Transformer AIO, and even the truly bonkers 5-in-1 Windows-Android hybrid Transformer Book V. Many of these designs have been fanciful and impractical, and some of them such as last year’s Project Precog haven’t even made it to market. On the other hand, some experiments have stuck – remember that this is the company that pioneered the netbook. If nothing else, these over-the-top concepts make for very entertaining showstoppers at Asus’ elaborate annual Computex keynotes.

This year’s big reveals were the ZenBook Duo and ZenBook Pro Duo, two similar laptops with huge secondary screens right below their primary ones. These 14-inch and 15-inch models are part of a larger industry-wide push to experiment with multiple displays, but they are so far potentially the slickest and most seemingly practical implementations we’ve seen. Besides, they’ve just been launched in India.

How much utility can a second screen bring to your laptop, and how practical is it to have one that’s always there? What are the tradeoffs in terms of ergonomics, battery life, and ease of use? Will the ZenBook Duo series completely rewrite the rules of the laptop market, or will this be just another flash in the pan? We’re reviewing the smaller ZenBook Duo UX481FL today to answer all those questions, and many more.

  Asus ZenBook Duo UX481 design

The ZenBook Duo UX481 is not especially slim, like many of today’s premium models try to be, but it’s going to turn heads no matter what. As soon as people get over the initial wonder of what they’re looking at, they are going to do a double-take. After a very long time, we have something that makes people stop and rethink what they assume a laptop should look like and how it should work.

Its overall size is small for a 14-inch laptop because the borders around the two screens are relatively thin, and the hinge is designed so that its barrel pivots below the base. This props the lower deck up at an angle when the lid is opened. Asus calls this its ErgoLift design, and it makes a lot of sense here, giving you a better view of the lower screen.

Curiously, Asus has decided to include an adhesive folding stand. This lies flat against the bottom of the laptop when not needed, but can be folded into a triangle shape much like many tablet covers we’ve seen, to allow the base of the laptop to be propped up at an even greater angle. The company says it helps with cooling and makes typing more comfortable, but it seems like an afterthought ­– or perhaps a last-ditch solution to an unforeseen design issue. It also made the laptop slide around on our table when closed, since the rubber legs were lifted.

Asus offers this laptop in only one colour, a deep greenish-blue that it calls Celestial Blue. It definitely stands out, but not in a bad way. It’s actually quite understated without being boring, and we like it. Thankfully there are no garish gold accents like we’ve seen on previous ZenBook models.

A signature ZenBook touch is the subtle concentric ring pattern on the lid radiating outwards from the Asus logo, which in this case is off-centre. Most of the body is made out of metal, and everything feels very solid. The lid doesn’t bend or flex much at all, and you can push the screen quite far back. You’ll need both hands to open and close this laptop, since the ErgoHinge design causes the entire base to move as the lid pivots.

The keyboard and trackpad have both been squeezed into the space below the ScreenPad Plus, and this is the biggest downside of the ZenBook Duo UX481. The vertical trackpad is far too narrow for comfortable use, and we constantly found our finger hitting the keys to the left or border to the right. As for quality, we found that it wasn’t particularly accurate, and the cursor would wobble a bit when we were trying to select something or just hover. Needless to say, left-handed users will find this arrangement extremely uncomfortable.

The keyboard is compressed into roughly as much space as on a 10- or 11-inch netbook, and those were never very good. Similarly, Asus has committed several sins here. There’s no palm rest area at all, and the keyboard deck is pretty high above whatever surface you have this laptop sitting on, which doesn’t make for comfortable typing posture at all.

You’ll have to keep your palms hovering rather than resting on something because there’s a raised lip that interferes with the bottom row. The keys are not too small, but are slightly squished together. The right Shift key is placed beyond the Up arrow, which means touch typing is out of the question. As for keyboard quality, the keys themselves are a bit mushy and unsatisfying. On the positive side, there’s white backlighting with three brightness settings.

Asus ZenBook Duo UX481 specifications and software

There’s more big news than just the second screen – this is the first laptop in our lab with a 10th Gen Intel Core CPU. Sadly, it’s a 14nm ‘Comet Lake’ chip, which means it’s just a mildly refreshed 9th Gen ‘Coffee Lake‘ chip, not one of the all-new 10nm ‘Ice Lake’ varieties. Still, we should see some improvements in terms of battery life, performance, and heat dissipation. The chip in question is a 15W Core i7-10510U which has four cores with Hyper-Threading and runs between 1.8GHz and 4.9GHz.

The primary 14-inch screen has a full-HD 1920×1080 resolution. Asus says it is validated by Pantone and comes colour calibrated from the factory, but we detected a warm pink tinge that might just be because we’ve received an early review unit. 100 percent sRGB coverage is also promised.

Asus calls the secondary screen ScreenPad Plus, to set it apart from the ScreenPad enhanced trackpad of last year’s flagship ZenBook models. This screen has a resolution of 1920×515 and is touch-enabled. Both panels are said to have 178-degree viewing angles.

To supplement this CPU’s aged Intel UHD Graphics capabilities, there’s a discrete Nvidia GeForce MX250 GPU. You get support for the fast new Wi-Fi 6 standard as well as Bluetooth 5. The battery has a 70Wh capacity and a 65W charger is bundled in the box.

Our review unit was kitted out with 16GB of RAM and a 1TB PCIe SSD, and this configuration is priced at Rs. 1,09,990 in India. If that seems like overkill, Asus also offers this laptop with a Core i5-10210U CPU, 8GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD, starting at Rs. 89,990.

The ScreenPad Plus behaves exactly like an external secondary monitor under Windows 10

On the left, there’s the DC power inlet, an HDMI port, and a pair of USB 3.1 Gen2 (10Gbps) Type-A and Type-C ports. They’re joined by a Type-A USB 3.1 Gen1 (5Gbps) port, a 3.5mm audio combo socket, and a microSD card slot on the right. That isn’t a lot of connectivity, but it’s enough to work with. There’s also a webcam above the screen with an IR sensor for Windows Hello face recognition, multiple microphones designed for Cortana and Alexa, and stereo speakers that fire downwards as well as outwards from the sides. Alexa integration is one of the big selling points for this laptop, but Asus has confirmed to Gadgets 360 that it is not implemented in India, at least not yet.

Our review unit was running Windows 10 Home with the current May 2019 Update (v1903). We were often irritated by large, intrusive McAfee Livesafe popups urging us to subscribe to a plan. Asus also includes some software of its own. The MyAsus app combines several of the company’s smaller apps which used to clutter up our PCs. You can configure the main screen’s colour profile and choose battery saver settings, run quick diagnostic tests, check for software updates, and contact customer support.

There’s an AppDeals section within MyAsus with several promotional offers, and Asus has wisely highlighted apps that can take advantage of the second screen, including Overwolf which shows stats and for competitive onine gaming, and several apps for creativity and productivity.

So let’s talk about the lower screen. The whole idea is that by making it exactly as wide as the primary screen and using the same horizontal resolution, you can move content around and multitask easily without bothering about alignment and without constantly swivelling your head. The angle does lead to a bit of hunching, though, which some people will find problematic.

Asus has gone with a matte texture for both screens, specifically in order to avoid reflections, which would have otherwise been a problem because they’re mounted at an angle to each other. We were surprised that the two screens seemed to have different colour temperatures – the primary one had a warm pink tinge compared to the lower one. Brightness also has to be adjusted independently.

What’s odder is that the lower screen recognises touch, but the primary one doesn’t. We took a while to get used to this, and eventually settled for just using the trackpad across both. On the other hand, it’s nice that Asus includes a stylus in the box with the ZenBook Duo UX481, which might come in handy for scribbling, sketching, signing, or just tapping things at a more convenient angle. You can disable the keyboard and trackpad with Fn key shortcuts to rest your wrist below the ScreenPad, but it isn’t exactly comfortable.

The lower screen is essentially recognised as a second monitor by Windows 10, and you’re in Extended Desktop mode by default. That means you can just drag and drop windows from one screen to another. It also means that when the ZenBook Duo UX481 wakes up from sleep, everything jumps back to the primary screen.

Asus has come up with one clever Windows UI enhancement. Whenever you drag a window by its title bar to move it anywhere, a set of three targets appears next to your cursor. You can “drop” the window onto any of these to either pop it directly onto the lower screen, force it to span both screens, or add a shortcut to Asus’ touch-enabled ScreenPad launcher (more on this in a minute). Additionally, three bars appear at the top of the lower screen allowing you to snap a window to exactly one-third its width.

You’ll notice a semi-transparent arrow button overlay at the left edge of the lower screen. This pulls up a menu that Asus has implemented to manage the ScreenPad Plus. The main panel shows quick shortcuts to applets such as a virtual number pad and handwriting input panel, which are thoughtful ways to use the hardware. These are ideal when docked to use one-third of the available space.

You also have a brightness slider, followed by a few buttons for Task Groups, an App Navigator, and a few quick controls. Task Groups let you define the positions and sizes of multiple program windows across both screens, and triggering any of them will launch those programs and snap them into place. There are four of these Task Group slots, and the feature works well enough. App Navigator is a kind of task manager that shows all open apps. Quick Key is a panel that lets you turn keyboard shortcut combinations into tappable buttons with clear labels. You can create your own shortcuts and define multiple pages of them. Each page can then be linked to a particular program so that contextually appropriate shortcuts appear when needed.

Asus has touted the ScreenPad Plus as a control surface, and despite the quirks of such an implementation, we can see how it could be useful. You can work on a photo or video full-screen while having various tool panels and pop-up boxes on the lower panel, or you could use it to display reference material while working on a document. You can have a music player’s controls visible and not too distracting, and you can also use it while gaming to display statistics or maps.

In short, anything you could do on a secondary monitor, you can do on the ScreenPlad Plus. Some programs are designed to exploit this, and others might still benefit because you can multitask more easily. You can even stretch a window to display across both screens if that helps you in any way. One quirk to be aware of is that when you take screenshots, both screens’ content is captured in one contiguous image.

Ergonomics aside, we had no problems with the performance of the ZenBook Duo UX481. We found that Windows 10 was very snappy, and there were no slowdowns even when streaming video with several programs running in the background and a dozen or so other browser tabs open. This laptop was also quick to wake from sleep, but it takes an additional second or two for the ScreenPad Plus to come to life. The generous amounts of RAM and PCIe storage are undoubtedly key to the good performance, and the brand new 10th Gen Intel Core CPU can’t hurt either.

One advantage of having the keyboard so far forward is that it isn’t affected by heat at all when the laptop is in use, whereas the ScreenPad Plus did get very warm. Fan noise was also generally well under control, and we only ever really heard anything when running our heaviest gaming benchmarks.

As we’ve said earlier, we found a warm tone on the primary screen, which might be an issue isolated to our review unit, and we were satisfied after tweaking the colour temperature manually using the Asus Splendid adjustment feature. Other than this issue, the screen was fine for productivity work as well as entertainment. Viewing angles are good and we always like a non-reflective panel. The ZenBook Duo UX481’s ErgoLift hinge allows the speakers more room to breathe. The sound is quite loud and expansive, but it does distort quite badly at full volume.

PCMark 10 returned scores of 4,072 and 3,618 in its standard and extended runs. Cinebench R20 showed a single-core score of 367 and multi-core score of 1,449. We used CrystalDiskMark to check out how the SSD performs, and measured excellent sequential read and write speeds of 3499.8MBps and 2385.9MBps, along with random speeds of 754.6MBps and 337.6MBps respectively.

The Blender 3D workload benchmark failed to complete, but POVRay ran its render in 3 minutes, 35 seconds and the Corona benchmark took 5 minutes, 50 seconds which are both decent scores. In our real-world tests, we were able to compress a 3.24GB folder of assorted files in 3 minutes, 49 seconds, while a 1.3GB AVI file took 1 minute, 39 seconds to be transcoded into H.265.

3DMark’s Time Spy test posted a score of 1,013, and the Fire Strike Extreme test managed 1,357. This isn’t really a gaming laptop, and even the discrete Nvidia GeForce MX250 GPU is barely adequate for 3D graphics, so we weren’t expecting great results in games. We tried Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 1920×1080 with the High preset, and got only 12fps on average. That went up to 20fps at 1280×720 using the Medium preset. Things were much the same in Far Cry 5, which gave us averages of 16fps and 34fps under the same conditions.

We weren’t expecting good battery life, considering the size of the ScreenPad Plus, but we were very pleasantly surprised. Our intense Battery Eater Pro drain test went on for 3 hours, 30 minutes, which is a lot better than many laptops can manage. With real-world usage including a lot of video streaming and Web browsing, we got nearly eight hours on a single charge. The ScreenPad Plus was active the entire time, set to 50 percent brightness.

Verdict

So did we find any use for the secondary screen? Actually, we did. We used it for reference material as we were typing, and found it quite convenient. We liked having a Windows Explorer window open and handy all the time. Over time, we could easily see ourselves leaving our email and messaging apps open on the ScreenPad for quick updates while we get work done on the main screen. We hope that if this concept catches on, software makers will start designing apps that specifically take advantage of a second screen in this position.

Some of this functionality can be achieved using Windows 10’s built-in virtual desktops feature. There’s also the possibility of buying a small portable external monitor, such as Asus’ own ZenScreen, though of course that wouldn’t be nearly as convenient or portable. So that leads us to ask, is having the ScreenPad Plus worth the ergonomic tradeoffs?

Sadly, the answer to that question is no. The keyboard and trackpad are just too awkward and uncomfortable. We had a very hard time getting basic work done, and our productivity did not increase. We had to prevent the ZenBook Duo UX481 from going to sleep so that windows would stay in position. Not being able to touch one of the two screens was also frustrating.

The larger 15-inch ZenBook Pro Duo UX581 model has space for a better keyboard layout, and with 4K resolutions as well as full touch support on both screens, it would seem to do more justice to this concept. With an external keyboard and mouse, you could have yourself a powerful, versatile mobile workstation. The smaller ZenBook Duo UX481 just feels like too much has been shoved into too little space.

Still, given what we’ve seen so far this year, this laptop could be the first example of many similar concepts and designs from multiple manufacturers. Innovation like this is what keeps pushing the industry forward, and with tighter hardware and software integration, we could see a lot of use cases emerging around secondary screens. Finally, if none of that matters to you and you just want a cool-looking laptop that everyone will want to see and play with, there’s really nothing else like the ZenBook Duo right now.

It's been a while since the last translation...we left Akane on the plane. Now we'll see what happens when she sets foot on SEAUn's land.

Old high-rise constructions, built in reinforced concrete in a time when the world was still a little more ordinary, were mixed with structures made of red rusted corrugated iron. All the buildings were full of holes like cheese because of gunshots and artillery fire.

They came in sight of the city on water “Shambala Float”* --- the organized capitol of SEAUn. 

Looking from afar, Shambala Float was too much like a fortress. The tower that looked down upon the people and the cold iron walls had an air that kept the unneeded away.

And now...the translation.

The view out of the window was enlarged and electronically corrected. An overwhelmingly larger number of wastelands and woods than in Japan. A scenery of plantations and rural country like in historical records --- . The dark red of the wasteland was oddly impressive. It looked like the colour of a ground dried after being painted with blood. Burning down woods, fields and towns would probably had resulted in such a colour. Unpaved roads ran in all directions like soil cracks.

Shortly after, the transport airplane passed over an urban area.

The slums, made of short shacks lined up, spread out endlessly.

Then, urban warfare.

A truck armed with a heavy machine gun --- the so-called technical vehicle --- was running around, also carrying a strengthening external skeleton of several generations before. In the window display that Tsunemori was watching, the technical vehicle and its external armor were shown encircled in red.

“…are they…amidst a fight?”   

“Speaking of civil war, it’s a civil war, but you can also call it simply a riot. In the suburbs, the organized crime fights as well using heavy machine guns. When civil war is everyday practice, it becomes ordinary. No one among the people of this country knows peace. The only things here are a chain of poverty and violence”

“Such a situation…is it more than 10 years?”  

“The Sibyl System is meant to change that. Anyway, you have to start with the ‘patient isolation’ firstly”

The transport jet airplane landed on the airstrip. It was taxied* to the apron. After stopping completely, the door opened.

“So, miss Ministry of Welfare, we landed safely!” she was greeted by Tanohata while leaving the plane and stepped foot on the foreign land.

The moment she had been brushed by the air, she felt the heat of it. She felt the moisture sticking to her skin. In Tōkyō --- at least in the business district, the air conditioning was controlled in every corner. She could tell to be in a different country through the skin sensation. She was aware of her entire body gradually sweating.

The drones started the handling operations of the goods stacked in the transport jet.

Heavily armed soldiers were lined up in front of the airport facility, located at a short distance from the plane. The man leading the soldiers was a colonel of the SEAUn National Military Police. Tsunemori turned on the translation function on her portable terminal immediately.

“I’m Colonel Nicholas Wong of the National Military Police. You are Inspector Tsunemori Akane from the Japanese Ministry of Welfare, right?”

“Yes”

“Welcome. We are glad to receive you and the Sibyl System”

Nicholas was a half-westerner man with long hair. This man was also perfectly dressed in a somewhat too gaudy uniform. A well-proportioned face --- facial surgery? In Japan, having plastic surgery has gotten easier from year to year together with the technique improvement, but I wonder how is the medical technology in this country.

Tsunemori got into a high mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicle* of the National Military Police together with Nicholas.

There were two types of wheeled vehicles there. One type of large size and one type with a machine gun loaded on the roof top. Tsunemori’s group got into the large sized one. The model carrying the machine gun was a security escort vehicle. Considering the roads were in bad condition, that vehicle was not so uncomfortable to ride in. From the airport, the queue of vehicles of the National Military Police headed for the metropolis center.

“Are you shocked at how bad the situation is here?” 

Nicholas addressed her.

“No…” Tsunemori shook her head vaguely.

“At the moment, it’s the same in every country. Except for Japan”

For some time travelling from the airport to the capital center they saw city slums. Old high-rise constructions, built in reinforced concrete in a time when the world was still a little more ordinary, were mixed with structures made of red rusted corrugated iron. All the buildings were full of holes like cheese because of gunshots and artillery fire. The vehicles troops were running at high speed through those slums with a maze-like appearance. The armored car had no windows but they could check the situation outside through the displays on the internal walls. Halfway, Tsunemori caught sight of a large sized crane truck. Many corpses were hanging on that crane, tied with ropes. 

“It’s a sight you can see frequently because of rivalry over the territory. A warning”      

Nicholas, who had noticed Tsunemori’s glance, explained her. 

The vehicle troops moved forward with the resounding deep noise of the engine, threatening the population further. Nicholas was paying attention to the holographic monitor appeared from the portable terminal on his wrist. He was checking the counter-mortar radar, the detection and ranging radar*, the electromagnetic waves probe device for detection of improvised explosive devices (IED)*, etc.

“…is it so much dangerous? Around here…”

“The situation has gotten better than it was before. The main military clan has been already repressed. The civil war is coming to an end”

“So by that you mean…that it’s not completely finished yet?”

“Exactly. The dissidents who revolt against the present regime still remain”

They came in sight of the city on water “Shambala Float”* --- the organized capitol of SEAUn. 

A colossal structure. Tsunemori unconsciously summoned up some data.  

A total area of approximately 100 square kilometers. 100.000 inhabitants.

Dvapara yuga in the lower stories, Treta Yuga in the upper stories, then the sky gardens of Krita Yuga* on the top, containing the Chairman’s official residence and a big heliport. Beside the Float, the offshore base of the National Military Police annexed to it. The external appearance of the high-rise tower which constitutes the center of the Krita Yuga resembles the Japanese Ministry of Welfare’s Nona Tower, if only a little. As the design concept is the same, it is only natural.

Looking from afar, Shambala Float was too much like a fortress. The tower that looked down upon the people and the cold iron walls had an air that kept the unneeded away.

Shambala Float was protected by the sea. The bridge and the gate were so well guarded by armed soldiers and military drones made in Japan that neither an ant could easily pass through them.

Fish-shaped security drones must have been swimming even in the sea.

“Here in Shambala special district, the Sibyl System is starting on an experimental basis. Only the people whose hue and crime coefficient are acknowledged as normal can enter…thanks to that country”

Tsunemori somehow felt that those words spoken by Nicholas were like irony. It shouldn’t have been so.

Isn’t it a very common talk? But even so ---

The country where Tsunemori Akane was born, the country where Tsunemori Akane was living. The overall perspective was hard to grasp. And when Japan had got to stretch its hands to different foreign countries, it had been hard to grasp even more. The highest organ of decision-making existed in a place that no citizen in the country knew and carried out operations so far as military aid to foreign countries in a way that no citizen in the country knew.  It was a turn of phrase but, as a Japanese citizen, did it mean that Tsunemori was cooperating with the SEAUn’s government forces too? 

In front of the gate that led to Shambala Float, the citizen who begged to get inside were checked by the National Military Police soldiers who were bringing with them security drones and scanners that judged the people hue. The ones with a particularly clear hue entered with a great joy but the others were repelled. It also happened that the ones with a clouded hue were disposed of on the spot.

By chance, beside the car that was carrying Tsunemori’s group, a mother holding an infant in her arms was being checked. The infant was clear. However, the mother was out. The soldiers separated parent and child and threatened the wailing mother with their guns.

“Isn’t it…too violent?”

“Don’t things like that happen in Japan?”

She had been answered a question with a question.

Tsunemori couldn’t retort more.

What the soldiers were holding was an improved model made in SEAUn of an assault rifle called SCAR* produced by the company FN. The micro fire-control system, the identification friend or foe (IFF)* system and so on had been added but the basic structure hadn’t change from the one of 100 years ago. In the countries besides Japan, there wasn’t enough technological power to develop and keep electromagnetic weaponry. Moreover, whatever weapon even of 100 years ago had no problem in fighting against the guerrilla and threatening a young mother. 

The car where Tsunemori’s group was travelling passed through the gate and entered more and more inside of Shambala Float.

It’s completely different from the outside --- the inner part was just another word, the image of peace. Families with smiling faces, couples who went shopping. Bustling crowded streets sparkling with hologram generating devices made in Japan. However, among them there were people wearing strange collars.

“Those collars…”

“Have you noticed? Those people are latent criminals”

“…!”

“As their psycho-pass is continuously monitored through that device, they are granted freedom of movement. If the hue gets clouded the crime coefficient is instantly measured. It’s a device that injects a sedative or a lethal poison depending on the points”

The latent criminals wearing the collars were busy with the city’s clean-up works.

The common citizens passed by as if the latent criminals didn’t exist. They neither met their gaze. For latent criminals and common citizens, even the buses they used had been strictly separated.

“Letting them have a life shared with common citizens this way is not advisable from the area stress point of view but…as we can’t still arrange large enough isolation facilities like in Japan, it’s a temporary measure. Even if they first enter in Shambala Float with a clear colour, it also turns out that the hue gets inevitably worse during life. Expelling them is good too but the truth is that there’s also a slight shortage of work force on the Float. And it’s not that we can’t use the latent criminals as the slave caste too”

Among the latent criminals wearing collars, there also were some wearing the uniform of the Military Police.

“Are there soldiers too?”

“Yes, they are enforcers, so to speak. All the people in the military caste have a clean hue. To fulfill the inspectors’ duties”

*Shambala Float: if someone asked himself about Shambala’s name just at this point (like I did) here some things I found on the net.

Shambhala, which is a Sanskrit word meaning “place of peace” or “place of silence”, is a mythical paradise spoken of in ancient texts, including the Kalachakra Tantra and the ancient scriptures of the Zhang Zhung culture which predated Tibetan Buddhism in western Tibet. According to legend, it is a land where only the pure of heart can live, a place where love and wisdom reigns and where people are immune to suffering, want or old age.

Shambhala is said to be the land of a thousand names. It has been called the Forbidden Land, the Land of White Waters, Land of Radiant Spirits, Land of Living Fire, Land of the Living Gods and Land of Wonders. Yuga in Hinduism is an epoch or era within a four-age cycle. A complete Yuga starts with the Satya Yuga, via Treta Yuga and Dvapara Yuga into a Kali Yuga.

There are four Yugas in one cycle:

Satya Yuga (also known as Krita Yuga "Golden Age"): The first and best Yuga. It was the age of truth and perfection. The Krita Yuga was so named because there was but one religion, and all men were saintly: therefore they were not required to perform religious ceremonies. Humans were gigantic, powerfully built, honest, youthful, vigorous, erudite and virtuous. The Vedas were one. All mankind could attain to supreme blessedness. Thee was no agriculture or mining as the earth yielded those riches on its own. Weather was pleasant and everyone was happy. There were no religious sects. There was no disease, decrepitude or fear of anything. Human lifespan was 100,000 years and humans tended to have hundreds or thousands of sons or daughters. People had to perform penances for thousands of years to acquire Samadhi and die.

Treta Yuga: Is considered to be the second Yuga in order, however Treta means the "Third". In this age, virtue diminishes slightly. At the beginning of the age, many emperors rise to dominance and conquer the world. Wars become frequent and weather begins to change to extremities. Oceans and deserts are formed. People become slightly diminished compared to their predecessors. Agriculture, labour and mining become existent. Average lifespan of humans is around 1000-10,000 years.

Dvapara Yuga: Is considered to be the third Yuga in order. Dvapara means "two pair" or "after two". In this age, people become tainted with Tamasic qualities and aren't as strong as their ancestors. Diseases become rampant. Humans are discontent and fight each other. Vedas are divided into four parts. People still possess characteristics of youth in old age. Average lifespan of humans is around a few centuries.

Kali Yuga: The final age. It is the age of darkness and ignorance. People become sinners and lack virtue. They become slaves to their passions and are barely as powerful as their earliest ancestors in the Satya Yuga. Society falls into disuse and people become liars and hypocrites. Knowledge is lost and scriptures are diminished. Humans eat forbidden and dirty food. The environment is polluted, water and food become scarce. Wealth is heavily diminished. Families become non-existent. Average lifespan of people is barely 100 years, though, by the end of the Yuga, it will be as low as 20 years.

*SCAR assault rifle: The FN SCAR (Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle) is a gas-operated (short-stroke gas piston) self-loading rifle with a rotating bolt. It is constructed to be extremely modular, including barrel change to switch between calibers.   *IFF system: Identification, friend or foe (IFF) is an identification system designed for command and control. It enables military and national (civilian air traffic control) interrogation systems to identify aircraft, vehicles or forces as friendly and to determine their bearing and range from the interrogator. IFF may be used by both military and civilian aircraft.

IFF was first developed during the Second World War, with the arrival of radar, and early friendly fire incidents.

Despite the name, IFF can only positively identify friendly targets, not hostile ones. If an IFF interrogation receives no reply or an invalid reply, the object cannot be identified as friendly, but is not positively identified as foe. The prehistory of PIE vowels, part 2

In the previous post we established the ablauting vowels *e and *o as continuing older **a and **ā respectively, supporting the claim with comparative evidence and outlining the development into the traditionally reconstructed vowels, giving their probable phonetic values, and even clarifying details about the laryngeals. In this post, I want to go in a slightly different direction, and explore the derivation of ablaut itself, and finish up by looking at the two generally unrecognised vowels, *i and *u.

Ablaut in PIE is generally considered the interchange between *e, *o, and *Ø (the zero-grade) within roots, suffices, and endings. It’s long been believed that ablaut was once directly correlated with, and probably related to, the position of the accent; one needs merely look at the athematic root verbs (such as *h₁ésti ~ *h₁sénti) to understand this conviction. However, even leaving aside thematic verbs and nouns, there are minor obstacles to this straight-forward derivation, and it is these that I shall concern myself with.

The first problem is the very appearance of *o. Due to its non-appearance in the classical athematic verb, it’s generally been supposed that *o is not original to the ablaut system, that somehow it’s a secondary “weaker” grade of *e, which probably came about by a weakening of secondary unstressed *e (where primary unstressed *e of course became the zero-grade). However, given the widespread occurence of stressed *o in the nominal system (*póds) and, with the results of the h₂e-conjugation theory, in the verbal system too (*mólh₂e), this theory can be laid to rest. There is no reasonable way to derive all these stressed vowels analogically, so at least some of them ought to be original.

The other is the presence of unstressed vowels, especially unstressed *e as in the e-reduplicated present (*dʰédʰeh₁ti ~ *dʰédʰh₁n̩ti). Here, and in particular in this reduplicated present, it seems likely that there was a stress shift onto the reduplicant. One need merely compare the present with the aorist it is surely derivationally based on (*dʰéh₁t ~ *dʰh₁ént) to see that while the ablaut grades match perfectly, the accent has been moved from its expected location.

Not all unstressed vowels can be accounted for this way, but a careful consideration shows a very specific distribution: in amphikinetic nouns, we find unstressed *o in the suffix when the root is stressed (e.g. *dʰéǵōm < **dʰéǵoms), in some amphikinetic root nouns, we find unstressed *e in the root in the oblique cases (e.g. *pedés), we find unstressed *e in the reduplicant of the perfect, and we find unstressed *e and *o in a number of endings, particularly word-finally. It stands to reason that these can all be accounted for by regular sound changes. We won’t deal with these directly, but rather present the theory first, and then show that it dispenses with each and every one of these exceptions.

We operate with three sound changes and a few morphological changes taking place before the development of **a **ā to *e *o. In this pre-PIE’s morphological system, instead of ablaut roots could either have uniform internal **a or **ā, and suffices and endings almost all had **a. Discussion fn the exceptions to that statement will be postponed until later, when we are equipped to deal with them. It’s not entirely obvious whether the nom.sg. *-s did have a vowel, but I find it likely that it did.

The first sound change is a syncope of unstressed non-final **a, and a reduction of pre-tonic **ā to **a. This creates the basic ablaut we see across PIE, particularly the interchanges between *e and *Ø, and *o and *e. Immediately following this, and before the next sound change, we have the analogical levelling of the grade of the suffix in the accusative (or oblique, in neuters) into the nominative, and the suffixation of the emerging middle, as distinct from the neo-active h₂e-conjugation, with *r.

The second sound change is a lengthening of immediately post-tonic **a in certain environments - probably only before continuants (*s, laryngeals, and sonorants) but later analogies have obscured the original conditioning. It may have depended on the position of the word, only acting on final syllables, but it’s hard to say for sure. It would also seem that any remaining unstressed **a were re-syncopated by the previous rule, which would imply that the action of these two rules overlapped slightly, but it can only really be shown before *y and *w, where contraction is also an option.

It’s possible that Anatolian actually diverged at this point, and if so, the differentiation of the low vowels, and the concommitant laryngeal colouring, must also be placed here, being two pan-IE features. This timeline would also recquire Szemerényi’s law to happen now, as this is also reflected in Anatolian.

The third and final sound change is a retraction of the accent from **a to a preceding **a. As just remarked, this may not have been shared by Anatolian, but the evidence is meagre and seemingly contradictory. For now, it’s simply more convenient to place this sound change before the split of Anatolian.

We can now consider the ablaut system as a whole. Under this system, all occurences of stressed *o are well-motivated - they’re inherent to the root (or at least, the stem) - as are those of all unstressed vowels - in the case of *o, lengthening, and of *e, stress retraction or a failure to be syncopated. However, there is still one major issue with this theory: the nom.pl. *-es. Short of positing an ad-hoc form with ending accent, there seems to be no way to explain this remarkable ending. In order to explain it, we must turn to the high vowels.

It is quite common to deny the status of actual vowels to PIE’s *i and *u, but this seems absurd to me - even if they are in complementary distribution with *y and *w, given that we can reconstruct endings *-is (dat.pl.) and *-su (loc.pl.), and even a root *bʰuH- (’become’), all of which regularly fail to display an *e where we would expect one, PIE must have had phonological *i and *u. This gives us a vowel system **a **ā *i *u for pre-PIE - a fairly normal triangular vowel system, only that the high vowels seem to be lacking long counterparts. However, I believe that this is only because we’re looking in the wrong place.

Just as **a and **ā differentiated by developing a quality distinction, it seems pretty natural that an original pair **i **ī would do the same, and similarly for **u **ū. The obvious answer is that **i and **u lowered, and we might even expect them to ultimately merge with *e and *o. Indeed, this is what I propose. For *e < **i, I offer the very ending under scrutiny, *-es, where derivation from **a or **ā is impossible, and for *o < **u, I point to the enigmatic *pótis ‘lord’, which does not display any clear e-grade, and whose *o does not yield *ā in Indo-Iranian. This rules out **a and **ā again. It goes without saying that after this lowering, **ī and **ū shortened to *i and *u, as length was redundant, and owing to the general tendency of high vowels to be short. This derivation has interesting significance for PIE in general, and further research is absolutely in order to explore the possible consequences.
