Megan Thee Stallion Celebrated "Hottieween" in a Skin-Tight Fairy Costume (Wings Included)
I'm willing to bet Megan Thee Stallion (and her nail artist) hasn't gotten a wink of sleep since Oct. 1, but it was well worth it for the sizzling outfits and scary looks she delivered all month long. To round out spooky season, Megan fully embraced the spirit of Halloween by hosting a "Hottieween 2021" party, where she broke out a skin-tight fairy costume that's basically a PG-13 adaptation of Tinker Bell's classic look.
The asymmetrical bodysuit featured a figure-hugging, sheer base embellished with shimmering blue, green, and purple rhinestones from head to toe. Leaving no feather or leaf unturned, Megan crowned her head with a floral headband with blue and yellow accents, matching earrings, and heeled green sandals adorned with even more dazzling flowers - because a fairy can never be too glamorous, right? Adding an extra element of fantasy to the look, the "Megan's Piano" singer also wore a pair of pointed ears, a spellbinding green manicure, and a massive set of bedazzled fairy wings ready to take flight all the way to Neverland and beyond.
I may not be an expert in fairies, but something tells me Megan was definitely the queen of the enchanted forest this Halloween. See her full costume from all angles ahead.

How Ants, Star Wars, and Politics Inspired the Squid Game Costumes
Still thinking about Squid Game? Me too.
I'll admit it: I was sucked into the Squid Game vortex with the rest of the 111 million people who watched the runaway South Korean Netflix hit. The plot twists, incredible acting, and fascinating escapism of the show captivated me, but it's the ultradetailed world building that Squid Game does that has kept it lodged in my brain (and nightmares) for months. All that creative world building produced some fascinating details and symbolism in the costumes, adding to the complex and clever layers of the show. In case you're still thinking about Squid Game like me, here are some of the most interesting details to enhance your next rewatch.
Warning: spoilers abound ahead, so proceed with caution if you haven't watched yet.
The Original Style Concept For the Guards Was . . . Boy Scouts
The now-iconic pink boiler suits the guards wear almost never happened! Director Hwang Dong-hyuk's first thought for outfitting the imposing guards was to lean further into the ironic schoolyard nostalgia aesthetic of Squid Game. "At first, I wanted a Boy Scout-like outfit," Hwang explained in an interview with Netflix Korea. "But it showed the men's figures too well. It didn't really make them look like ants in a colony. They needed to cover their entire body and the best option to keep them anonymous was a jumpsuit. With a hoodie too, because they need to cover their faces."
Speaking of those guard masks . . .
The Black Masks Had Multiple Fascinating Sources of Inspiration
One of the trickier components to create were the guards' masks. "I worked on a lot of different mask designs. The mask went through countless designs," said Squid Game art director Chae Kyung-sun. The masks had to check a lot of boxes in order to make it into the show. "It has to be comfortable, allow you to see clearly, and show their status," Chae explained. Hwang admitted, "We tried animals and some other weird stuff," before settling on the style.
The final concept that made it into your living room (and, probably, your Halloween costume) was an amalgamation of several sources of inspiration including fencing masks, which have screened face shields, and traditional Korean hahoetal (하회탈) masks, some of which have hinged jaws. That latter element became important as Hwang requested that the masks be foldable.
The masks of the oppressor guards were also inspired by ant colonies. When looking at an ant colony from a distance, it's impossible to tell the tiny bugs apart, but within the colony, different ants have different duties, responsibilities, and tasks to accomplish. The guards are similar in this way, and the circle, square, and triangle shapes painted on their masks are the ways they can tell each other apart. The circles represent workers, who you'll see bringing bodies to the crematorium. The triangles are worn by machine-gun-wielding guards. Finally, the squares are worn by managers who oversee all the other pink-boiler-suited characters.
The circle/triangle/square shapes are echoed across the series, not only in the guards' masks but also in the show's logo and opening credits, as well as on the cards given out to recruit players to the game and in the children's squid game court. In the Korean alphabet, Hangul, "squid qame" translates to "오징어 게임" or "ojing-eo geim" when Romanized and sounded out phonetically in the English alphabet. The series abbreviates the phrase "ojing-eo geim" into "OJM" or (roughly) in Hangul "ㅇㅈㅁ," which visually appears as our often-repeated circle, triangle, square motif.
Those Green Tracksuits Are Recycled From a 1970s Political Initiative
The normcore dystopia couldn't be normcore without those white sneakers and green tracksuits. The specific shade of green was instantly recognizable for Korean audiences, but the cultural reference was probably lost on the larger international audience.
In an interview with The Korea JoongAng Daily, Chae said, "We decided on a popular green color from the Saemaul Movement [a political initiative launched by President Park Chung Hee] and the tracksuits children wore on field days at school during the 1970s. This may seem retro and kitschy, but they have their own nostalgic charm."
On the opposite end of the Squid Game power dynamic from the green-clad players are the hot-pink-clad guards. Pink and green are also opposite each other on the color wheel, reflecting their juxtaposition in the series as well. That was a deliberate choice by production, Chae elaborated: "We chose pink [as one of the main colors] as well because it is a color frequently used in fairy tales. But we [the production crew] came up with our own meaning [depicted in Squid Game]. Green is terrified of pink because it monitors and suppresses green."
Did You Catch That Subtle Star Wars Reference?
In an interview with The JoongAng, Hwang revealed the matte-black, multifaceted mask worn by the villainous Front Man was inspired by one of the biggest movie villains of all time: Darth Vader. The mask was purposefully designed differently from the masks of the other game guards in order to spotlight The Front Man's subplot, which heightens the reveal of his true identity. "It's a mask that gives a little personality," Hwang said.
Seong Gi-hun's Hair Makeover Is Actually Foreshadowing His Final Episode Choice
Everyone who has watched Squid Game has an opinion about Seong Gi-hun's finale-episode makeover. The cherry-red hair is a move K-pop idols pull all the time, but it's almost never seen on middle-aged men in South Korea. Even Lee Jung-jae, the actor who played Seong Gi-hun, was surprised by the script. He explained, "I talked to the director and asked why I should dye my hair red because it's a color that ordinary men at Gi-hun's age don't do. I think it was a will to show actions that go beyond the limits that people think Gi-hun would never do."
Hwang confirmed that, while it might have seemed like a random makeover, the idol-worthy cherry-red hair was a deliberate choice. "I imagined being him and thought to myself, 'what is the color that you would never choose to dye your hair?' Then I came to the conclusion that Gi-hun would never dye his hair red," Hwang explained. "It would be the craziest thing for him to do. So I chose the color and I thought it really showed his inner anger."
That inner anger builds in Gi-hun all the way to the final moment of Squid Game when he is pulled from the jetway and a promised reunion with his daughter to instead chase down the mysterious game-playing man in the subway to . . . who knows? Warn the potential contestant against entering the Squid Game? Dismantle the entire macabre competition? Your guess is as good as ours until Squid Game season two is (hopefully) announced.

I Thought I Was Done Buying Handbags, Then I Discovered Apede Mod
To date, I have 42 handbags in my collection. Zero exaggeration - I just counted. Handbags are the way I express myself. I have large, small, structured, oversize, crossbody, tote, mini, and everything in between - in nearly every color you can imagine. I often switch out my handbags based on my outfit or the event I'm attending.
And despite what my mother thinks, each bag is a little bit different. Some are great for important work meetings. Some are showstopping for date nights or an event. Others are good for everyday errands or brunch with friends. The point I'm trying to make is, I love handbags. I love the confidence they lend me and the way they can totally transform an outfit. At 42 total, I thought I had all the handbags I needed, until, of course, I came across Apede Mod, and my life has never been the same.
Founded in 2016 by best friends Jaquelyn Wang and Claudia Lin, the cult-following New York City-based brand is known for its color-popping handbags that are both minimal and enchanting. According to the founders, Apede Mod gets its origin from an ancient Egyptian god named Apedemak who stood for courage and independence and Mod, which symbolizes vitality and independence. "We want to combine fashion with utility for our creations," Lin told POPSUGAR. "Each bag from Apede Mod is designed with inspiration from vintage pieces, architecture, and modern culture."
The website features 12 different categories of stylish bags in a plethora of color options that are so good, you'll find yourself spending a chunk of time scrolling through the site - and 22 opened tabs later, you'll understand what I mean.
A bag, if chosen wisely, can last a lifetime, and that's exactly what you'll get in one of these. Ahead, shop some of my favorite styles from the brand. A word to the wise: these bags sell out quickly and don't exactly restock quite as fast, so if you like something, it's best to purchase when you see it.

Thanks to Squid Game, This Fashion Item's Sales Have Spiked 7,800%
If you've somehow managed to miss out on the global phenomenon of Squid Game, (a major feat unto itself considering that 111 million people in 90 different countries watched), the escapist dystopia is now Netflix's biggest show ever.
The ultraviolent South Korean import has been embraced so deeply by fans that in the two months since its premiere, the cultural ripples it has made worldwide are better described as a rogue wave. It's everywhere. Halloween 2021 was gleefully flooded with green tracksuits and pink boiler suits, TikTok is full of Squid Game makeup tutorials, everyone is patiently stirring sugar into dalgona, and the iconic white sneakers that the 'Squid Game' players wear are seeing a massive resurgence.
The white, canvas shoes worn by the doomed players in the series are classic slip-On Vans sneakers. The American company introduced the shoes in 1977 under the more formal name "style #48" and have been producing them for almost five decades since. According to Sole Supplier, sales for the sneakers have skyrocketed 7,800 percent since the dystopian drama premiered on September 17.
Damn, Squid Game! Back at it again with the white Vans. https://t.co/pYognIuaVj
- Netflix (@netflix) October 7, 2021
The popularity of Squid Game is due, in part, to its wonderful visuals. The oversized Red Light, Green Light girl dressed innocently, but blasting bullets. The black masked, pink boiler-suited oppressor/guards moving like gun-wielding ants through candy-colored sets. Add to the list that chilling episode 7 image of a pile of blood-splattered white Vans left behind as contestants made their tragic final walk across the deceptively sturdy glass runway. There's something about the pile of normcore sneakers symbolizing the annihilation of innocents that sticks with viewers long after the finale. It haunts you.
For their part, Vans has embraced the sudden spike in affection for their '77 classics. Go ahead: search "Squid Game" on the brand's site and you're instantly redirected to the iconic slip-on, already in the selected "true white" shade. The sneakers have overwhelmingly great reviews and hidden among the 5-star reviews are some winking, sweet-as-dalgona critiques: "These shoes are amazing! They helped me ace Red Light, Green Light and jump over the glass bridge with ease. Highly recommend!"
Hurry up and shop your own pair of Vans' classic slip-on sneakers here before they sell out . . . or before a mysterious stranger lurking in the subway challenges you at a game of ddakji. Whichever comes first. Good luck.

Thank You, Insecure: Molly's Chainlink Bra Top Is Now on My Holiday Mood Board
A big thank you to Insecure's costume designer, Shiona Turini, for inadvertently supplying some excellent holiday outfit inspiration via the show's latest looks. In case you haven't been watching (and in which case, what are you waiting for?!), here's a spoiler you may have already seen coming: Molly (Yvonne Orji) wears a very good outfit in episode two. It's largely thanks to that chainlink halter top, but the whole thing is pretty perfect, if you're into statement-making dressing that's chic and still kind of chill.
Molly breezes into Issa's big event, showing her support, dressed in a look that makes a mark - the kind you'd notice at any party for all the right reasons. It's sexy, and chic, and not all that hard to pull together. So, we followed the inspiration and went shopping, pulling the key pieces to get on Molly's level, if only for a night.

13 Fair Isle Sweaters to Help You Channel Cottagecore Vibes All Winter Long
Solid, neutral sweaters are cool, but it's hard to beat the rustic charm of a cozy Fair Isle sweater. The kitschy-but-timeless look has been a coveted one for hundreds of years and a fan favorite of the British royal family.
Ready for a little fashion history? According to BBC, the uniquely festive knit design was originated by the people of Fair Isle (an island north of Scotland) way back in the early 1800s for local fisherman to wear. It caught on, and here I am in the year 2021, sitting on my couch, combing the internet for the same pattern. Talk about a style with staying power.
If you're looking for a sweater that's mega cozy and just a little bit whimsical, Fair Isle is the perfect starting point. I've made your hunt for the perfect Fair Isle sweater easy by picking 13 of the cutest ones. The hard part will be choosing which one (or two . . .) to buy.

The 5 Autumn/Winter Boot Styles We Can’t Get Enough Of Right Now
A good pair of boots is an essential component of any winter wardrobe. While most people change up their outfits daily, once they’ve settled on a pair of boots that are comfortable and they feel great in, they’ll wear them day in, day out – which is why it’s important to invest in a good pair. This season, there are so many new and classic styles to pick from, whether you’re looking for the chunky-soled variety, an elevated Chelsea boot or the knee-high style that dominated the AW21 catwalks. schuh is exactly where to find them.  The brand’s new range has something for everyone, whether you’re after flat or heeled, ankle or long, plain or printed. It’s super affordable too, with prices starting from just £25. What’s more, if you bring an old pair of shoes to recycle in-store, you’ll receive £5 off your next pair as part of schuh’s Sell Your Soles scheme. Great for the planet, great for the old bank balance, right?  Below, we’ve selected our favourite new season boots to shop now. Which style will you opt for?
Adiana, £90 Lace-up boots are front and centre of the AW21 boots trends and it’s a style we don’t see going out of fashion any time soon.  Adiana has a utilitarian feel with a thick platform sole, segmented body detailing and laces that elongate the ankle.  A perfect daytime boot for running around town, the Adiana lends a casual but pulled together feel to any look that’ll see you through brunch, a walk in the park and all those errands you’ve been putting off.  Wear with your favourite jeans, dress or tailored trousers. Schuh Adiana, $, available at Schuh
Danika, £55 Danika blends two of our favourite footwear styles: biker and knee-high.  Designed to sit just beneath the knee, these boots have a statement platform sole, visible stitch detailing, elongated elastic panels and an inside zip to make getting them on and off super easy.  A little grungy, they’ll toughen up a mini skirt and button-down cardi, or for more of a preened look, wear with a soft, knitted jumper dress and a sleek wool overcoat.  The best bit is how supremely comfortable they are. Schuh Danika, $, available at Schuh
Paxton, £100 With the return of ‘90s fashion in full flow right now, it’s unsurprising that brown is having a revival. A colour that was deemed a neutral alongside white, grey and black during the decade, these chocolate brown boots are exactly how to channel the look today.  Made from leather, Paxton features a brown body that finishes just below the knee and a chunky black sole for a statement. They also have stitch detailing to provide subtle structure and loop tags on the back.  Team them with a mini skirt, opaque tights and a cute knit or wear over tight jeans with a long tailored coat. Schuh Paxton, $, available at Schuh
Amalfi, £85 An elevated Chelsea boot, the Amalfi features an on-trend chunky sole, deep elasticated sides and a sleek silhouette.   These practical boots will keep you warm and dry in the depths of winter without sacrificing style. The timeless black design may look hefty but is actually very lightweight, meaning these  boots can be worn with a multitude of outfits.  Team with black wash jeans, a bright knit and a trench for stomping around the city, or with a floral winter midi dress, cashmere cardigan and tailored wool coat for a smarter look. Schuh Amalfi, $, available at Schuh
Dakota, £55  Knee-high boots are all the rage right now – just look to the likes of the celeb style set for proof. Celebrities and influencers have been wearing the style nonstop over the last few months and Instagram is awash with them.  Lean into the ‘60s-inspired design and team your Dakota boots with a mini dress and opaque tights. Alternatively, pair with jeans and an oversized knit for a smart-casual option.  The boots come in classic jet black, too. Level up your boot game this season with schuh's autumn winter 2021 range. Schuh Dakota, $, available at Schuh
Like what you see? How about some more R29 goodness, right here?

R29 Style Picks: Everything We Want To Buy In November
It might not be ice cold yet, but the arrival of November does mark a significant change. While last month saw us crunching over orange leaves with our brand new autumn boots, November is where we have to get serious about the upcoming winter weather.  Gone are the days of only needing a light jacket, with each darker day taking us one step closer to the familiar bear hug of our ‘big coats’. When it comes to layering, we’re making sure we’re fully prepared, stocking up on cosy knits, sweater vests and cardigans aplenty.  For those two steps ahead, it’s also the time to start thinking about the key cold-weather essentials, including winter accessories. Will that worn-out beanie from the days of lockdowns still hold out, or it is time to treat yourself to some new, colourful headwear? Perhaps it’s also time to check if you still have both gloves to hand (how do we always end up loosing one?!). Still, there are plenty of indoor outfits on our wish lists this month, with the rainy days marking the perfect occasion for matching loungewear, fuzzy slippers and comfy bralettes. Whatever you’re looking to shop this month, team R29 have you covered.  From knitted balaclavas to leather trench coats, here’s everything we have our eye on this November… At Refinery29, we’re here to help you navigate this overwhelming world of stuff. All of our market picks are independently selected and curated by the editorial team. If you buy something we link to on our site, Refinery29 may earn commission.

Jacqueline Kilikita, Senior Beauty Editor
I recently had my very thick hair cut short by The Hair Bros, so it’s a lot easier to wear this season’s most chic accessory: the claw clip. While I love the classic tortoiseshell versions, I want something a bit jazzier, and this clip by Tort fits the bill perfectly. I’ll pick out some face-framing strands to complete the look. Tortware Toto Clip in Pink Turtle, $, available at Tortware
My winter coat is far too warm for November and my denim jacket doesn’t quite cut it, so I need something in between. This over-shirt looks very cosy and it’ll go with everything I own (mostly black!) Zara Textured Overshirt, $, available at Zara
I saw Hailey Bieber with a canvas version of this bag but I love the fluffy look even more for winter. It’s pretty big, too, so it can hold all of my beauty must-haves (yes, you should be wearing sunscreen in the winter, especially if you’re spending time outside). Staud Felix bouclé shoulder bag, $, available at Matches Fashion
Sadhbh O'Sullivan, Health and Living Writer
Like Jackie, I’m a sucker for a claw clip and I love this green resin number. Yoko Yoko Hair Clip, $, available at Liberty London
If I’m being perfectly honest I’ve actually made my own one of these before but the latest Paloma Wool launch has inspired me to add to my warm headwear collection. Paloma Wool Balaclava, $, available at Joan The Store
This really is a sign people do change – I never thought I’d be lusting after a brown shoe but I just love these. Kleman France Brown Leather Mocassin, $, available at kleman
Kristine Romano, Junior Designer
As winter looms, I’m always looking for ways to bring more joy into my wardrobe. These flower hoop earrings do just that! Lisa Says Gah Florette Earrings, Silver, $, available at Lisa Says Gah
The only shoulder bag I own is a Scandinavian Airlines flight attendant bag I bought second hand. Don’t get me wrong – I love it, but it would be great to have something else in my rotation. Hvisk do dreamy bags and this green number is an especially tempting option. HVISK Amble Nylon Recycled Bag, $, available at Hvisk
Loafers are everywhere I look and these ones by Geox look as comfy as they do cute. Geox Bleyze Woman, $, available at Geox
Anna Jay, Art Director
Forever in pursuit of a capsule wardrobe, these straight up workwear trousers are just what I’m looking for. Dickies Elizaville Work Pant, $, available at Dickies
Hoorah for slipper season! TOMS Ezra Slipper, $, available at TOMS
#Influenced into booking some autumn sun, these will be perfect for seeing out the last of the sunny days in Mallorca. bloobloom Icon in Amber, $, available at bloobloom
Alicia Lansom, Editorial Assistant
I can't work out if this bralette looks super cosy because of its hot chocolate colourway or its warm waffle material. Either way, I'm ready to wear it all winter long. Skims Waffle Henley Bra, $, available at Skims
How many pairs of black boots are too many pairs of black boots? I don't know the answer and I don't want to know if it means I can't get these moody lug boots to stomp around in. Kurt Geiger Stint boots, $, available at Kurt Geiger
Trench season can feel fleeting, but trust me when I say a leather trench can keep you warm all winter long. Offering way more protection than a cotton iteration, this chocolate dream is giving me Blade Runner meets Zoe Kravitz vibes. Hush Leather Trench Coat, $, available at Hush
Vicky Spratt, Features Editor
I love Nick Cave and you can never have enough t-shirts. That’s all I have to say about this. Cave Things Head High T Shirt, $, available at Cave Things
Sadly for me, I can’t afford head-to-toe Simone Rocha. However, the good news is that I can afford her accessories. I got really into embellishment that spiced up video calls during the back-to-back zooms of endless lockdowns. Now I’m hooked. This hair clip is the perfect addition to my burgeoning collection. Simone Rocha Flower beaded crystal hair clip, $, available at Selfridges
My friend recently bought some tinted sunglasses. She says she’ll be wearing them all winter because they cheer her up. I cannot verify the science behind this claim but what I do know is that I’d very much like to go to French eyewear brand Jimmy Fairly and pick up this pair to see if she’s right. Jimmy Fairly Black Abyss, $, available at Jimmy Fairly
Georgia Murray, Junior Fashion Editor
I’m hooked on Beyond Retro’s Reworked section, where they refresh old fabric and create new pieces from recycled vintage. This rollneck knit will see me through the season, paired with high-waisted denim and chunky-soled boots. BEYOND RETRO LABEL High Neck Lettuce Edge Ribbed Knit, $, available at Beyond Retro
I’m going to Mexico for 10 days at the end of the month (sorry!) and have my eye on Solid & Striped’s stellar swimwear, which has just gone in the sale at Matches Fashion. Bring on the tequila sodas and fish tacos... Solid & Striped The Jamie High-Rise Bikini Briefs, $, available at Matches Fashion Solid & Striped The Rachel Striped Bikini Top, $, available at Matches Fashion
Good News is my favourite sneaker brand for many reasons, the first being their sustainability credentials. Every pair is made of biodegradable uppers, recycled rubber soles and organic cotton fabric. Plus, they have the retro aesthetic I look for in every pair of kicks. Will they get dirty in autumn? Maybe, but I never liked a squeaky clean trainer anyway... Good News Organic Cotton Canvas High Top Sneakers, $, available at Net-A-Porter
Anna Jay, Art Director
I’m eyeing up this boxy basket bag from YGN Collective, a mother-daughter duo working to support women in Myanmar with constant income. Everything from this store gives back to valuable causes so it’s a win-win.   YGN Collective Handmade Woven Basket, $, available at Frankly
Enter my autumn hero of a jumper. Cute flame graphics and a nice wide sleeve, I’ll be teaming this with jeans and boots all season long.  & Other Stories Flame Colour Block Sweater, $, available at & Other Stories
I’ve dithered over many pairs of hiking style boots over the last few months. Thanks to Arket I might finally bite the bullet with these bad boys.  Arket Leather Hiking Boots, $, available at Arket
Eni Subair, Editorial Assistant
Every winter my friends rave about how useful Uniqlo's thermal vests are so as someone who perpetually feels the cold, I’ll be popping one on under all my jumpers. Uniqlo Heattech Jersey Crew Neck Thermal Top, $, available at Uniqlo
I’m a sucker for any sort of Matrix-style sweeping coat and this ASOS marketplace reworked beauty is my latest obsession. From the hourglass fit to the faded orange detailing, it’s certainly a sight to see. Topped off with killer platform boots, it'll make up my AW uniform. Vintage Reworked Vintage Faded Long Faux Leather Coat, $, available at asos marketplace
There's never an occasion when I won't opt to wear Western boots if I can swing it. These Mango bad boys are a visual delight and quite frankly, I'm ready to indulge. I can already predict my family totally mocking me for my foray into the Wild West, but they're pretty used to my quirky footwear choices by now. Mango Cowboy Leather Boots, $, available at Mango
Jazmin Kopotsha, Entertainment Editor
I bloody love a hat. I know a lot of cool people who wear hats on the regular and I would like to be one of them, please. This black fedora is a classic that, in theory, I could (and would) wear with absolutely everything.  & Other Stories Braided Felt Fedora Hat, $, available at & Other Stories
Ninety percent of my wardrobe is black, grey, dark grey or navy blue. Some call it depressing, I call it consistent. That said, I’m slowly coming around to a fun injection of colour and I adore the grandad vibe that’s emerged recently. This bobbled gem fits both briefs.  Warehouse Bobble Stitch Jumper, $, available at Warehouse
There have been too many occasions when I’ve asked someone where they bought their beautiful, easy-breezy yet smart casual dress from and the answer has been Whistles. Though I tend to shy away from floral dresses – especially in the winter – I’ve checked to make sure this one is in stock in my size about four times a day for a week now. I think it’s a sign that it should be mine.  Whistles Floral Ruffle Silk Mix Dress, $, available at Whistles
Alicia Lansom, Editorial Intern
Last year I really wanted a pair of red faux snakeskin trousers, but I chickened out and never bought any. These burgundy faux crocodile ones feel like a toned down version that I would actually get wear out of, and can be worn on both a night out or with a cosy knit. Sorted. Topshop Faux Leather Crocodile Straight Leg Trousers, $, available at Topshop
I’ve had my eye on this coat for weeks but I wasn’t sure I could justify buying a trench when the weather is about to change. However, now that it has been added to the Uniqlo mid-season sale, I may actually end up adding it to my basket come payday. Uniqlo Blocktech Checked Coat, $, available at Uniqlo
As a short person, I want a pair of boots to give me height, but I always find heels a pain in the arse to wear. Chunky platforms solve that problem, which is why I have had my eye on the Jadon Dr. Martens forever. Fingers crossed they get reduced sometime soon.  Dr. Martens Jadon Platform Boots, $, available at DR MARTENS
Tilly Thorns, Activation Manager
I haven’t owned a pair of winter gloves since I was a toddler and they were attached to a string in my coat, so I think it’s about time I invested in some. I’m currently on a pile buying frenzy so these will be a chic addition to my collection.  Arket Pile Mittens, $, available at Arket
Having packed all my summer shoes away for the year, it’s become quite clear I’m not equipped for winter. Thankfully Everlane is on hand to give me some good quality rain boots.  Everlane The Rain Boot, $, available at Everlane
A total mood. Aries Unbalanced T, $, available at Aries Arise

The perfect winter dress: winter florals, corduroy, long and roomy enough for all the big meals. Plus, it goes great with a white rollneck and black boots. Vintage Vintage 90s Maroon Paisley Floral Corduroy Dress, $, available at asos marketplace
Speaking of rollnecks, this merino wool turtleneck is ethically made and exactly the kind of yellow I want to make a staple during the dark, wintry months. Komodo Keaton Merino Wool Jumper, $, available at Komodo
I don’t need another coat but if I were to add another to my closet, it would be this. I watched Almost Famous for the first time a couple of weeks ago (so sue me) and I finally understand the lust for coats like these. House Of Sunny Chocolate Penny Vegan Fur And Leather Coat, $, available at House of Sunny
Laurene Mpia, Associate Production Manager
Winter advice: always have a great array of socks on tap. I usually wear dark colours with minimal detailing but I'm rebelling this season. Falke Set Of Cotton-Blend Socks, $, available at Net-A-Porter
These clogs are my dream AW shoes! They are perfect for winter with socks (hehe) or in summer with a long midi dress. But we’re not there yet so let’s stick to the strong sock game. Birkenstock Boston Suede Leather, $, available at Birkenstock
This is an investment that needs to happen. It's subtle, looks like the ideal texture and the price tag ensures I'll be keeping it for a very long time. Acne Studios sure knows how to deliver winter goods, which is a godsend in this freezing weather! Acne Studios Oversized Fringed Scarf Dark Wine, $, available at Acne Studios

Can You Believe I Found This Perfect Dupe on Amazon for $20?!
Confession time: when the muscle-tee trend first made a blip on the fashion radar, I had mixed feelings. On the one hand, I was here for it. (As someone who credits Working Girl as one of their favorite movies and almost exclusively listens to '80s music, I'm always secretly looking for an excuse to rock some shoulder pads.) But when I went online to snag a little bit of the retro magic, I was flabbergasted by the price. Nearly $100 for a tee? I love keeping up with the trends as much as the next person, but that sticker shock was a little . . . well, shocking.
But a few months ago, it finally dawned on me to check Amazon for a budget-friendly dupe. Sure, Amazon might be where you order your selfie light and drawer organizers; however, it's also a great place to stock up on trendy pieces for less. As luck would have it, I was able to find the Meladyan Solid Cotton Padded Shoulder Sleeveless Tee ($19-$20) for a fraction of the price.
Don't let its exaggerated shoulders fool you: this dupe fits and feels just like every other tee I own. The only difference is that this shirt is slightly nipped at the waist, so I would recommend tucking it into your favorite pair of baggy jeans. But unlike the other T-shirts I own, this one's surprisingly elevated. I can just slip this top on, add some pants, and instantly feel like a cool girl. (I always wear this top with my favorite joggers when I travel, and I'd like to think I make my flights' best dressed lists every time.)
But what I love most about this shirt is the quality. Sure, $20 might be expensive for a simple tee, but it's on the cheaper side for this trend. I was a little worried it wouldn't hold up well in the laundry; however, I'm pleased to report that my skepticism has been left unfounded. Not only has this shirt retained its shape after a few washes, but the shoulder pads are also intact.
Oh, and did I mention it comes in a bunch of colors? As of now, I only have this shirt in white, but I'm definitely filling my cart with a few more. I mean, when you find something that's cute, comfortable, and chic, it's a no-brainer.

I Challenged Myself to Ditch My Skinny Jeans, and Old Navy Came Through With These $45 Pants
Call me old-fashioned, but I'm a skinny jeans girl at heart, so the variety in my denim collection is lacking, to say the least. When the skinny jeans debate broke out on social media, it was easy to pick a side, but I've since given into temptation and (hesitantly) purchased my first pair of wide-leg jeans since middle school. To ease myself into the trend, I went with this pair of Extra High-Waisted Medium-Wash Cut-Off Wide-Leg Jeans ($45) from Old Navy. High-waisted pants are my best friend, so I figured they'd balance out the fear I had about tumbling down the sidewalk because of all the extra fabric around my ankles. After wearing them for a week, the verdict is in, and I'm only a little bit mad that I love them.
When I first slid into the jeans, I was skeptical. The excess fabric around my ankles did make me feel like a toddler that had wandered into the big kids' section, but then I added a pair of heeled boots that gave my 5'4" self a much-needed lift and completely changed the way I saw myself in the pants. The raw hem is clean but casual, and the high waist accentuates my figure in a way that perfectly complements the flare at the bottom of the jeans. (Frequent shopper note: Old Navy's pants tend to fit larger than expected, in my experience, but these are true to size!)
Personally, I'm already obsessed with tucking oversize shirts into these and calling it a day. But styled with the right pair of shoes and a nice blouse, I could even see these working for dressier events. You'll sooner see me leaving the house in nothing but Lady Gaga's Valentino cape dress than a pair of low-rise jeans, but I will definitely be browsing beyond the skinny jeans section from now on. Shop the jeans here!

NFTs Are Fashion's Newest Collectibles
By now you've probably heard the term NFT, but maybe you're not entirely sure what it's all about? Or what those three letters even stand for? NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, are a kind of digital contract that verifies ownership of something. NFTs can be "attached" to digital assets like art or fashion, and allow them to be sold or transferred. When NFTs are sold, the creator of that asset receives commissions from every sale, creating a new marketplace for brands and artists to make money off of their digital designs. (In some cases a lot of it.) In March, a piece of digital artwork by Beeple was sold at Christie's in an online auction for a whopping $69.3 million.
Luxury design houses quickly took notice of the potential of NFTs, and in the past few months Gucci auctioned off an NFT inspired by its fall/winter 2021 collection in an online auction hosted by Christie's, Burberry launched an exclusive line of digital accessories for Blankos Block Party, and Dolce & Gabbana generated $6.1 million in sales in its auction of a nine-piece NFT collection. Of course, not every NFT is seeing a big return. In fact, the market is currently flooded with available NFTs from digital artists that may or may not increase in value. NFTs are available for as little as $1 and the value is ultimately determined by the market.
One brand, Metagolden has addressed this somewhat risky investment by pairing it with something that has a proven track record of value retention: gold. Metagolden is one of the first jewelry brands to register digital artwork and jewelry together on the blockchain and made viewable via QR code. "If you're going to tokenize an NFT, you may as well do it with something you can wear and appreciate instead of just saying you own it with a stock or digital contract," says former fashion editor and founder of Metagolden Francine Ballard. We caught up with Ballard for a crash course in all things NFTs.
POPSUGAR: How do NFTs change the game for artists, musicians and designers? Francine Ballard: The reason artists in particular are excited about it is because it allows them to bypass the middleman. In the past, galleries (or labels in the case of musicians) and retailers had the power because they contracted with artists to sell their work and they took a big chunk of the sale in commission because they had access to the buyers. Now, with the advent of social media, most artists have their own curated audiences and can sell directly to their consumers. NFT contracts allow them to take that a step further and recapture a piece of all future sales of their art. So said differently, I buy a piece and sell it to someone else. The artist would get a commission even though they aren't involved with the sale - and on, and on. Every time that piece resells, they get paid.
PS: How is Bitcoin or cryptocurrency connected to NFTs? FB: Bitcoin is a digital currency that uses a decentralized system that records transactions in a distributed ledger called a blockchain. Wait! Stay with me. The inventor of Bitcoin created this technology, but once there was sufficient proof of concept, other applications evolved out of it. Ethereum was the first. They used the same technology to create digital contracts. So think of it this way: Bitcoin = Blockchain money. Ethereum = Blockchain contracts. These contracts are called "NFTs."
PS: What's the easiest way to get involved in NFTs? How can you start with relatively low risk? FB: Download an exchange app (Gemini or Coinbase) or wallet (Metamask is the most universally accepted) and bid on an inexpensive piece on one of the art platforms. (Opensea is the largest, but there are many others.)
PS: What is Metagolden and how did you conceive of this concept? FB: Metagolden is a gallery platform that connects consumers to the burgeoning and lucrative world of NFT investment through digital art coupled with fine jewelry. So you purchase the art and jewelry together. The jewelry is featured in the art so the two are inextricably bound and verified on the Blockchain. You can think of it this way - the jewelry is the proof of purchase for the NFT art.
PS: How do consumers showcase their digital art? FB: Via any digital platform, social media channel or via QR code from anywhere. We present our art in an acrylic cube frame.
PS: Where is the fashion industry headed with regard to NFT technology? FB: This is such a fascinating dialog and it's truly incredible how quickly the space is advancing. There are digital fashion houses and also digital wearable marketplaces that are already doing big business such as DressX. I also believe with luxury brands like Gucci and Fendi launching more and more physical and digital products, this will be the tipping point in terms of mass adoption.

Meet The Illustrator Who Does “Spooky Fashion” Year-Round
Instagram’s best-dressed have one thing in common: they each have a signature style item that they wear more often and better than anyone else. For one person, it could be a string bikini, worn on and off the beach. For another, it’s a standout hat or expertly layered jewellery. Whatever the piece may be, it’s their thing. With our column My Thing, we’re talking with those same experts about that one specific item they have made into their signature — and style unlike anyone else.   Every year, come October, we embrace our wardrobe’s darker side. Leading up to Halloween, bikinis turn into turtlenecks, breezy colours are swapped for moodier hues, and our internal desire to channel Morticia Addams is intensified. But while this is a seasonal phenomenon for many, others, like the 30-year-old Berlin-based illustrator-designer Sonia Lazo, live the witchy fashion life year-round.    “I’ve always been into spooky fashion,” says Lazo, who grew up in El Salvador before, recently, moving to Germany. “It’s been a lifelong affinity for me.” While Lazo indeed gravitates toward graphic skull prints, all-black outfits, and lace-up corsets, what makes their style stand out in the space is their ability to channel the goth aesthetic while infusing colours and Victorian- and Rococo-inspired silhouettes. Think: lots of pink (Lazo's favourite hue) and pastels; voluminous, child-like dresses; thigh-high socks, bow headpieces; and choker necklaces.    As an illustrator, Lazo likes working with elements from mythology, astrology, horror, and fantasy, resulting in colourful, kitschy art that then trickles into their fashion. Lazo’s style is also influenced by their interest in witchcraft and the ways in which women can channel their feminine power. “It’s beautiful to see women reclaiming a word that it’s been used against them for so long,” they say. (In 2019, they published a book on the subject, titled Witch, Please!: Magical Musings on Life, Love, and Owning Your Power.)   While Lazo’s Halloween-esque style lives year-round, they confess that every October they get especially excited about dressing up. Over the past month, they have shown their almost 150K followers on Instagram outfits ranging from frilly dresses, matching sets, T-shirts, and tights with skull and dead flower prints to vinyl corsets and lace tights: “I definitely feel it a bit more this time of the year.”   Ahead, see how the creative styles their looks from January to December.
Clashing prints is one way to make a black-and-white look visually interesting.
The official outfit of the spooky-girly aesthetic.
The category is "tropical goth."
Add a skull-charm choker to toughen up an otherwise-whimsical look.
