Imagine having a snow day with the red hair pirates
Tumblr media
You: *doesn't have winter clothes yet, so you have to make due with what the rest of the crew* can I get a little help duct taping these.
Hongou: duct taping your pants to you?
You: yes, I must be hermetically sealed! I don't want even a snowflake getting inside.
Shanks: *scoops up a handful of fresh powder with an evil smirk on his face as he gets behind you*
Hongou: *locks eyes with his captain* I'll help you * takes the tape, kneels in front of you, and grabs your hips* Now boss! Get em
Shanks: *shoves the snow down the back of your coat*
You: *screams and flails when the cold water seeps instantly through the thermal Benn had lent you.*
Benn: *pulls them off you and wrestles Shanks out of his coat and various sweaters and takes his thermal shirt and gives it to you.* Here, since he got yours wet.
Shanks: what about me?
Benn: use your haki to keep warm if you get cold, now get dressed. *Gently kicks him for good measure*
You: thank you, Benn, would you like to go sledding with me.
Benn: sure thing *puts his hand on your lower back and leads the way*
Hongou: wait I wanna go sledding with you too!
Shanks: hey! I know they're cute, but don't hog em!
Benn: *scoops you up, gets on the sled, and scoots it to start down the hill* oh no, looks like we're already down the hill bye.
Shanks: oh Benn, you bastard come back here! *Trips slides down the hill after you two on his belly*
Hongou: *the one who tripped him*

999 Week 2023 - The Ninth Man
this one is much shorter, especially since we don't get to see much of him and that he's also dead. but this time it's from someone who used to work at cradle
You used to work for Cradle Pharmaceutical, pretty high up the food chain too. Enough to interact semi-regularly with the executives nine years ago. Hongou gave you the creeps despite how kind he acted; Nijisaki reminded you of an overly dramatic rich theatre kid; Musashidou was your average rich villain; and Kubota was just kind of there.
Kubota rarely spoke up, almost as if he was afraid of everyone and everything. But you gotta admit, that man was a genius when it came to technology. Completely refined all the most used technology at the company, and when he ran out doing that he worked on the more minor pieces. Though as time went on, he did start to do less and less on the company while becoming more fidgety. You remember the few times you caught him by surprise and he was like a cat, jumping away. Once, you asked him about it. He gave you a jittery excuse and avoided you as much as he could for a whole month. He obviously tried to hide it, but it was obvious. Next, you asked the three others. Musashidou laughed arrogantly and told you in the nicest terms to screw off else you get fired, Hongou said it was a personal project they’re working on, and Nijisaki literally just waved you away.
You don’t remember too much about Kubota. It was a long time after all. You remember his office being cluttered with items but nothing personal, him passing out from refusal to sleep soon citing nightmares before his resignation, him chugging coffee almost constantly, as black as it seems Hongou’s soul is considering he killed him, Musashidou and Nijisaki. Maybe so was his, as there are reports that he helped kidnap children
You’ve been reading up on the case as of late, thinking that you were fortunate to have left years ago. It’s been brought up by your coworkers over and over, especially since they know you worked there. But the funny thing is, you can’t exactly say much. He wasn’t a very significant man to you, though maybe he is a bit more now, now that you know of his sins.

You mentioned your Kuja OC, and I know about Doc, but do you have any other One Piece OCs?
Oh gosh, I hadn't realised before combing through my fics to answer this just how many there were (although having written nearly 2.5 million words of One Piece fanfiction, there's been a few original characters), so I guess my answer is I SURE DO. I've focused on the ones that are recurring characters in Shanties, and since I'm a writer and words are how I paint, I included their description from their first appearance!
A Not Comprehensive List of Original Characters Featured in Shanties for the Weary Voyager:
I feel I should start with Suzume (also known as the exiled Kuja Asphodel), one of my oldest OCs, she's the embodiment of the Fates masquerading as a village seamstress/former pirate. She may or may not have had an affair with Roger at some point, but has loved no mortal as fiercely as she loves Makino:
Fast approaching seventy (or at least that's what she'd have them all believe, anyway; Makino wasn't convinced there wasn't a missing decade in there somewhere), she was known first for her cantankerous personality, second for her complete and cheerful disregard of existing social norms—or the other way around, depending on the time of day, and who you asked. But the village had made its reluctant peace with her; a strategic surrender, as you could sooner convince a hundred-year oak to grow in a different direction. (Heed the Siren's Call, chapter 6)
_
There's Makino's adoptive mother, Emiko, a battle-axe of a barmaid, and Party's former owner:
She had her arms crossed over her chest—never a good sign, in Makino's experience, especially when she'd tucked her hands into her elbows like that, as though she'd gotten comfortable in the pose—and those sharp blue eyes were narrowed in a distinctly unimpressed glare as she took in the sight of the flustered girl on her porch, heaving all her breath out of her lungs. (Heed the Siren's Call, chapter 1)
_
Among the Red-Hair Pirates, there's my beloved Doc, the crew doctor before we knew about Hongou, and now the crew's senior physician and Hongou's former mentor:
Gruff and no-nonsense but with a wry sense of humour, Doc was easily one of the kindest men Makino had ever met, barring his current patient, although his appearance suggested a harder demeanour. His face showed his forty years, the dark shadow of his unshaved stubble deepening the unforgiving angles, and the heavy-set shoulders looming above his broad chest looked better suited a butcher than a ship's doctor, although she regretted the comparison a moment later, catching sight of the blood covering the front of his shirt. (Heed the Siren's Call, chapter 14)
_
And one of their now two ship's cooks, Marsh:
‘Big’ didn’t really begin to describe Shanks’ cook, who towered even over his captain. A long chestnut braid hung down his back, as smooth as a coil of rope, and his apron was pristine and neatly pressed.
He rarely spoke, but she’d gathered small things from their few exchanges—that he preferred to cook with liquor rather than drink it, which had struck her as an odd preference for someone in this particular crew. But then his demeanour already marked him as something of an oddity, although it wasn’t like Ben’s considering lengths of silence, but rather a naturally quiet presence. He didn’t require speaking to be understood. (Heed the Siren's Call, chapter 11)
-
There's also Fen, forever on cat-wrangling duty:
Fen had been with Shanks' crew since before they'd first docked in Fuschia, and at fifteen, he was a tawny-haired sapling of skinny limbs, and shrewd as few boys his age should rightly be, which sometimes made her forget that he was even younger than she was. (Heed the Siren's Call, chapter 14)
-
Speaking of Red Force's resident devil cat, Whiskey:
Their ship’s cat—Whiskey, a grizzled, three-legged orange tabby—uncurled from where he’d been dozing on the railing to wind between his legs. Shanks reached down to scratch behind his ears, before the creature made a limping beeline for Makino. He’d taken an immediate liking to her, the few days she’d been aboard, for all that all of Shanks’ cabin boys were afraid of him. (Mnemosyne, chapter 13)
-
I feel Siren also counts as an OC, given that swords in One Piece often feel like characters in their own right. She's Makino sword that sings, gifted to her by Shanks, and a recurring feature in nearly all of the Shanties timelines:
It was a different type of sword than Gryphon, like a katana but smaller, just a little longer than the length of her own arm from hilt to tip. It was in a black scabbard, the surface smooth like lacquer and set with jade and what looked like moonstones or opals. A red silk rope looped around it, knotted intricately, and it had a long, slender hilt, the sea-green wrappings standing out against the black and the red, the burnished metal hand-guard delicately engraved.
It was no ordinary blade. Even with her limited knowledge, the impression fixed itself in her mind like a truth.
Her fingers wrapped around the hilt, and her breath caught when it fit her hand perfectly. And drawing it from its sheath, she listened to the song, the perfect tune where it hummed on the still air.
Siren.
(On the Water, chapter 1. Not her first appearance in Shanties, but probably my favourite)
-
Other recurring characters include the Loguetown swordsmith, Hamon, who's also Siren's maker:
He was a short, stocky man with a trimmed black beard greying along his cheeks. When he grinned, it was a smile that cut with a sharp but friendly laugh. (Sailor's Folly, chapter 3)
-
(Touya gets a mention only because he shows up in Penelope, Mnemosyne and Andromeda Unbound, and is useless in every single one. I can't be bothered with a description other than "has hair, and probably eyes". Sometimes you just need a villain.)
-
Of my Kuja OCs, only one is recurring in fics outside of Mnemosyne and that's Aster:
Gorgon’s owner was an older woman. Aster, loud and kind, her white hair in thick braids coiled back and wrapped with multiple scarves, and her dark skin an impressive map of vicious, bone-white scars.
“Snake wrestling,” she’d announced with a wink, when she’d caught Makino failing at stealing a subtle glance, and had laughed when her eyes had bulged.
She was blind in one eye, but very little slipped past the other, sharp and gleaming and yellow like a snake’s. (Mnemosyne, chapter 5)
-
Speaking of Mnemosyne, I also have several sea king OCs! There's Hadal, old as balls and with a fondness for human dad jokes; Selene, who's Rouge/Hibiscus' Yuda (and now Ace's); and Kerberos, Suze/Asphodel's three-headed Yuda, although my favourite is Twinkle, who appears first in Mnemosyne, but who also saves Makino's life in On the Water when she goes overboard:
Her sister was just two centuries old, young for her kind, and for all his attempts, Shanks had never found an equivalent for her name, nothing in any of his many languages that could capture everything it encompassed―the feeling of standing on deck, a star-strewn sky weighing heavily over the sea, nothing but horizon on all sides, and of being overcome by the knowledge of one’s own insignificance in the vastness of the universe.
Roger had just called her Twinkle. (Mnemosyne, chapter 18)
Then out of nowhere, the undersea lit up, the dark shattering against a blinding burst of light as two giant, luminous eyes appeared beneath her, below which stretched several rows of enormous teeth.
The sea king seemed to glow, its opal eyes like the night sky. If she hadn’t been so terrified, Makino thought she might have found it beautiful. (On the Water, chapter 1)
-
There's Shanks' mother, Muir, and his father, Alasdair. Recent canon information derailed my headcanon backstory for Shanks a bit, but I'm still very fond of them:
He was a very tall man, broad over the shoulders, with an imposing presence that claimed space. As he came closer, Rowan saw that he was older, his hair iron grey and his cheeks stubbled with a dark beard. From under a high brow, a single, sharp eye seized hers, grey-and-green, like the forest back home after nightfall. The other was like Aster’s, blind, and clear as glass. (Mnemosyne, chapter 11)
His mother had been fearless—or at least she’d seemed that way to Shanks, although even through the lens of hindsight and experience, his impression of her hadn’t changed; the woman who’d lived in the breach where the sea met the shore, and who’d had the courage to always put herself last without a second’s hesitation.
Shanks remembered her vividly—the red, untamed mane of her hair and the roar of her laughter. (Lionheart)
-
And of course, there's Shanks and Makino's brood ♥
Ace (sometimes Roger, in the AUs where Ace lives):
Their eldest flicked his eyes up, above the glasses perched on his nose. And the resemblance he bore to his father really was uncanny, Makino thought. She had to do a double-take sometimes, catching him sitting at the bar and for a fleeting moment thinking she was imagining things; old memories from a different bar, on a different island.
Of course, Ace at least had the sense to button his shirt all the way up. (The Wilfulness of Water)
Emmy:
She grows up, their swallow, half in the water, half on land, climbing the rigging on Luffy’s ship with her eyes closed, to scare the gulls perching on the mast, small hands steady on the ropes and her legs rooted to the planks, like she was born to live with sea under her feet. She can tie all the sailor’s knots Shanks can teach her by the time she’s six — and all of them again one-handed before she turns seven. She’s the best swimmer out of all her siblings, and can shoot a bottle at twenty paces without pausing for breath before she’s ten (Yasopp’s doing, to which he’d only looked at Shanks, brows raised, as though to say ‘oh this you have a problem with?’)
She braids her hair with flowers and seashells and her mother’s old kerchiefs — learns to cook, to navigate, to chart stars (“in case I can’t find a good navigator like Nami-nee right away, or a cook like Sanji-nii,” she says, matter-of-fact; so fiercely, wonderfully practical Shanks doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry, but “she’s yours,” he tells Makino, fondly, desperately, “they all say she’s mine but she’s yours”). (Lay the Sea At Your Feet)
Aya:
“Would you go out to sea again if you could?” came the query, calmly spoken despite the slight note of uncertainty in her voice (and she didn’t ask do you miss it?, perhaps because the answer was already implied, or perhaps because she understood that it didn’t answer what she really wanted to know, which was would you ever leave us for it?).
But then she was that—calm, and unshakable, the latter trait easily attributed to her mother, but Shanks had always wondered if she hadn’t gotten a little of that from him, too. Once he’d made a choice, he never wavered, and everything she represented—the island, the bar, her mother and her siblings—it all amounted to the most important choice in his life.
“No, my girl,” he said, bending to kiss the crown of her head, her short hair, red like his, although there was little of the sea in their youngest; their steady-footed girl, her lion's heart moored to the island she’d been born. (Lionheart)
And Rowan:
Makino knew that face like her own—the pert nose, and the wide, lovely mouth, which was always smiling. Those big brown eyes held far too much mischief to even pretend at innocence, as terrible a liar as Makino had ever been called, but then her near-permanent smile made no secret of that fact, demonstrating it proudly. (Mnemosyne, chapter 6)
-
I also can't talk about kid OCs without also mentioning Sparrow, my Mihawk x Hancock kid:
The girl inclined her head in greeting, her long hair falling over her shoulder, the black spill of an inkwell against her fair skin. The two swords at her waist caught the light; silver inlaid in each hilt, and a hawk’s wings spanning the cross-guards, swept outwards as though in flight.
She was pretty—was beautiful, although it was a sharp kind of beauty, found in the severe line of her nose, and the bright golden eyes where they sat, large and near-luminous beneath a high, regal brow. Makino had only ever seen pictures; the few her father had been inclined to share. (The Wilfulness of Water, although she features more prominently in Sparrowhawk)
-
And I think that's most of them! Some of these, like Doc and Marsh, were created while we still knew very little of Shanks' crew, but even as we've learned more about the Red-Hair Pirates in canon, they've become such a familiar fixture in my writing that in my stories, they'll always be part of the Red-Hair Pirates ♥

Rules: List your WIPs below (if you only write one fic at a time, feel free to include future WIPs/ideas!) then answer the following questions. Then, tag as many people as you have WIPs (or more).
WIP List:
-NOPE found family fic, part 4! (of 4?) -Trane (Troy/Jane) soulmate mark AU -something something movie William Afton pov? -Hongou + Kurashikis Zero team (but they're manipulating him) bark bark bark dog metaphors -Kieran lives -Ashley Graydon is the Masked Apprentice
2. Which of your WIPs is currently the longest?
That'd be the NOPE fanfic, which is 3422 words so far. I know, it's not a long thing, but I have bits and pieces for my WIPs before I polish and publish them.
3. Which WIP do you expect will end up the longest?
Maybe the Ashley Graydon Masked Apprentice AU? Depending on if I ever write more of it to create chapters.
4. Which WIP is your favourite to write/the most enjoyable to write? Why?
The Trane one is fun because Jane is just so unapologetically mean as a narrator. And she bashes Troy a lot, which is awesome.
5. Which WIP do you find the most intimidating to write? Why?
Probably the bark bark bark one bc I want to match the beauty and darkness of the two pieces of fanart that inspired it. And I want people to read it, I don't want it written off as "oh emi, making hongou and the kurashikis like each other just like you tried to peddle back in 2012, huh?" Like, no - that's not what's happening there. They're working together but Hongou is very much a bastard and very much getting what's coming to him anyway.
6. Which WIP do you experience the most self-doubt about. Why?
See above tbh. And I get nervous about the NOPE fic bc it's a finale of sorts to my series.
7. Which of your WIPs will you seek out a beta/sensitivity reader for? Why?
I don't use betas/sensitivity readers ever, so. None.
8. Have any of your WIPs been struck by the curse of writer's block?
LMAO like ALL of them? Plus several more I have let fall by the wayside for years??
9. Which WIP has your favourite OC? Tell us about them?
None of them have OCs...
10. Which WIP is the sexiest?
The Trane soulmate AU's got some smut in there, so that one.
11. Which WIP is the angstiest?
Tie between Kieran and Ashley. Kieran just deserves a hug and Ashley... well, he can have one too, but doesn't deserve it as much.
12. Which WIP has the best characterisation (in your humble opinion)?
I... I don't know. Lots of them feature characters with just a glimpse of a canon personality, so it's unclear how "accurate" they are written.
13. Which WIP has the best scene setting (in your humble opinion)?
I like the NOPE fic. It's a sweet piece from Emerald's POV - she gets to talk with Ryder this time. c:
14. Which WIP have you worked the hardest on?
Hard to say tbh. I think they're all about even.
15. Which WIP do you have the highest expectations for? Why?
I... think the Kieran one would probably be the most popular. The rest are pretty obscure haha.
16. Do you dream about any of your WIPs?
Dreams... I dunno, I don't think so.
17. Do any of your WIPs have particular complexities that your other fics don't?
I mean they're all kinda complex in their own way? I have to keep checking wikis and thinking over characterization.
18. Which WIP is the funniest or has the most humour?
I think the NOPE fic! Em has a lighthearted POV for the most part. :]
19. Do any of your WIPs contain outside POVs or a deep dive on a character other than the main ship? How are you finding that process?
Most of my WIPs don't have to do with ships, so
20. Tell us one thing we don't know about one or more of your WIPs.
I really have no idea sorry.... I don't really know what I've said about them and what I haven't, lmao
Tagging: YOU!!!!!!

999 Week Day 9 - The Bottom Feeders
In which the Ninth Man deflects all guilt
Title from the Bastion OST
CWs: Canon-typical death
AO3
---
This wasn’t him. It couldn’t be him with his knife against a girl’s throat. People didn’t change that much. A decade ago, something like this would have never crossed his mind as a viable way to get out of anything. Something toxic had wormed its way into his skull and was controlling him. As Teruaki’s eyes darted around the room, his nails digging into the fourth girl’s wrist, he kept glancing at the suspected parasite for reassurance.
Once Hongou knew he had a former subordinate before him, he’d gone into CEO mode. He’d tented his fingers together and made vague comments that Teruaki implicitly understood as commands. “Was it you who used to carry that silly pocketknife everywhere?” he had said in that condescending tone of his that usually meant he was about to mock Teruaki’s ideas and then use them anyway. “Such paranoia…”
“You-you remember that?”
Hongou had ignored him, waving his hand as he thought aloud. “No, I suppose that wouldn’t matter right now. My wallet is gone. I presume your possessions were taken, as well.”
Teruaki did have his knife. His wallet was gone, but the knife was hidden in his sock like always. He liked to think that carrying one around was also not like him. He’d been doing it for over a decade, yet he held out hope that one day he would miraculously shake the habit. It was all because that bastard Musashidou got in his head. Blustery, self-important Musashidou thought his own life so valuable he’d hired three bodyguards to wait just for him outside the door during Nonary Project meetings. He’d made Teruaki overly conscious of his lack of self-defense capabilities. Thus, the knife, which had never been used.
Until now, of course. Hongou had mentioned the knife, so it had to be involved in whatever his plans for him were. That, plus the faulty RED and DEAD…
His calculations had been quick; it was either two and three, two young men who could have easily overwhelmed him, or one and four. The pink-haired girl seemed weak enough, and Hongou would surely play along – this was all his idea, after all.
Up close, Teruaki recognized the girl as one of the children from Building Q. He even remembered her name – it really was Clover, how clever of her. He recognized all the pieces that came together to make her a real person deserving of kindness, but that wouldn’t do, so he called upon what he’d learned from Nijisaki.
Hongou’s callousness at least had an understandable medical explanation. Nijisaki, on the other hand, was simply vile, and Teruaki felt his slime all over him to this day. It was Nijisaki who had taught him how to not feel remorse when looking at the children’s bright eyes and chubby cheeks. As Teruaki steered the fourth girl’s hand to the RED, he reminded himself, “These kids have fucking superpowers. They’ll pull themselves back up. Think where you’ll be in a decade if you just take the advantage you’re being given.”
This was where he was a decade later: a husk driven by the wills of three wicked men. Hongou, Musashidou, and Nijisaki vied for control, shoving the girl to the floor, pulling the lever and stepping through the door before anyone could stop him.
Teruaki wasn’t sure who was responsible for his remarks as the door shut. It wasn’t like him to be so smug. He made himself sick. Those three made him sick. He vowed to purge them if he made it off this damn ship. He would become his old self again. It was the least he could do after what had already happened.
The sludge that burst from him moments later was thick and vile. But it was all him.

Imagine the Red hair pirates being a cute found family during the holidays
Tumblr media
Uta: tried sitting down at the Adult's table
Hongou: ah ah ah, no, kids sit at the kiddie table *points at the small table closer to the kitchen*
Uta: Eh! I'm an adult.
You: * leaning on the table, smoking a fat blunt* You're like what, six?
Uta: *gasps* I'm ten!! I'm not a little kid anymore! Gosh.
Hongou: Of really? Then what's a mortgage?
Uta: Some sort of death pledge?
Benn: It sometimes feels like it, but no. Those who know what mortgages are can sit at the adults table.
Benn, Yassop, and Hongou: *finally take their seats at the adult's table with you*
The rest of the crew: *go crouch around the Kids table*
You: really guys?
Shanks: What, I've lived on a boat my whole life, mortgages are out of my sphere of existence.
You: how lucky you are.
Uta: *sticks her tongue at you* Mortgages are a stupid metric to measure adulthood.
You: alright alright, you can all sit at the adult table.
Uta: Yay! Now get up. Only I can sit at the head of the table.
You: *Laughs as you get up* What a little diva.
The crew: *gasps in shock*
Shanks: *covers her ears and gawks at you in disbelief*
Benn: We don't use the D-word around Uta.
You: oh *crouches down to her height, so you can look her in the eyes* My apologies I didn't know that you took offense to that term. Now is there a T-word you wanna say, since I'm giving you my seat?
Uta: T-word? .... Oh, thank you! *gives you a big smile*
You: *pats her on the shoulder* you're welcome sweet pea.

Also, he did kinda cosplay Stronger- albeit it was a cardboard costume the KRC made for the school festival in Movie War Megamax. The other members were dressed as the Riders they were named after (ex. Kengo was Ichigou, and “Utahoshi Kengo” is an anagram for “Hongou Takeshi”).
Takeru as Bleach Ichigo is hilarious. They kept censoring Bleach in the extra for Ghost’s Zi-O tributes because they keep referencing Gentaro’s actor playing Ichigo the live action, which is why he couldn’t make it to film for his own tribute. (Ryuusei’s actor was Uryuu and Nadeshiko’s was Orihime... and yes, the comparisons did not escape my notice.)
Yua as Haruno Sakura though... I don’t really like Sakura as a character... 😅
George would 100% cosplay Ichigou. But OG Ichigou- the suit we usually see is actually a revamped version. As a devoted fan he’d go for the OG version of the suit (like the one we see in Senki).
