Season 3 Rewatch Drabbles: 3x9 Save Henry

Summary:  A series of 100-500 word drabbles to accompany my    rewatch of season 3 of Once Upon a Time.  There will be a drabble–either a deleted scene, a “fix it” fic or a character musing for each episode of the season.  Focus will be on Emma, Henry, the Charmings and Killian–with an emphasis on Captain Swan’s epic love story.

Note: It had been my plan to keep at least 3a thoroughly CS focused in these drabbles, with the POV changing from episode to episode between Killian and Emma (this episode was meant to be a Killian episode), but after watching this episode, the big sister/aunt/godmother in me, who has been around and helped care for babies all my life, absolutely had to step in and have someone give first-time mom Regina a little advice about how to handle a crying newborn. (disclaimer: I’m not a mother, so I’m well aware I can’t possibly know the full extent of what it means to be a parent, and I’m not in any way trying to lecture or Monday morning quarterback anyone about parenting, but I am affectionately known as “the baby whisperer” among my family, so I’ve got to be doing something right, right?)

Regina was at her wits end.  Everyone said parenting a newborn was hard.  Everyone said the lack of sleep would be difficult.

No one told her it would be like this.  She was so tired she felt like she was perpetually walking around in a fog.  She did everything she could for Henry–fed him, changed him, held him, rocked him, even tried singing lullabies to him, but nothing worked.  Nothing stopped the relentless crying.

Finally, desperately clawing for something, anything, that could help her, she’d brought her baby to Dr. Whale, sure that there had to be a physical reason for it all.

But he told her Henry was perfectly healthy (before scaring her to death by mentioning the possibility of genetic issues that she had no (legal) way of determining.)

Clutching at that last straw, she’d decided to call Sidney and have him dig into Henry’s sealed adoption records, and to get a moment of peace to do so, she’d handed her baby off to Mary Margaret.

The last thing she’d expected when she turned back around was to find her baby quiet and peacefully cooing up at the school teacher.

Regina’s heart dropped even lower.  What if it wasn’t a physical or genetic problem? What if it was…

”How did you do that?” she asked, walking over to her erstwhile nemesis.

”Do what?” Mary Margaret asked absently as she smiled and cooed down at Henry.

“Make him stop crying.” 

Mary Margaret shrugged.  “I didn’t do anything. He’s so sweet.”

Now was not the time to analyze the ins and outs of why this miracle had occurred.  Now was simply the time to enjoy it.  Regina took Henry from Mary Margaret.

And he immediately started wailing again.

 “Oh no!  No, no, NO!”

Mary Margaret fluttered her hands looking distressed. “I’m so sorry!  Did I do something?”

A cold, stinging sensation settled deep inside Regina.  It wasn’t anything Snow White did.  It was her.  All her. ”No.  No, you didn’t.  It’s me.”

“Well, that’s just nonsense,” came the no-nonsense voice of Granny Lucas as she breezed onto the scene.  “Here, hand him over.  I’ll show you a thing of two.”

While Regina’s first inclination was to stand to her full height and tell the woman she was fully capable of caring for her own son, she realized she really had nothing more to lose.  She deflated and passed Henry over to Granny.

The older woman took him, smiled down at him, and then placed him up against her chest, her hand gently but firmly holding his head to her with her other hand under his little bottom.  She began to bounce and sway, making little shushing noises.

Henry’s wails faded, and then came to a stop.

“But…how?” Regina asked.

“You don’t raise a daughter and then a granddaughter without picking up a few tricks along the way,” Granny said.  “First off, you’ve gotta relax.  You’re wound as tight as Leroy when I run out of bacon.  Babies…they can feel your tension, so you feel yourself tensing up?  Take a couple deep breaths.  Let ‘em out.  Set him in his crib where he’s safe and step away for a few seconds if you need to.  I’m telling you, it’s the key.  You relax; he’ll relax.”

“So…just breathe?  That’s your solution?” Regina asked, with a sardonic raise of the brow.

“Of course not.  That’s just step one,” Granny said.  “Next, look at how I’m holding him.  Ruby refers to it as the ‘Granny choke hold.’  Don’t look at me like that; I’m not choking your baby!  I’m just holding him tight.  Babies like to feel secure, and they like to nestle on your chest where they can hear your heart.”

“Breathe and hold securely.  Got it,” Regina said, “anything else?”

“Last step,” Granny said, “I like to affectionately call the ‘baby jig’.  Just kind of bounce and sway.  It’s soothing.  Gets tiring after a while, but then usually once you get ‘em calmed down you can generally move to a rocking chair.  You wanna try it?”

Did she?  Well, she quite literally had nothing left to lose.  Regina nodded.

“Good,” Granny said with a nod, “now take that deep breath.  That’s it.  Now let it out.  Feeling relaxed?”

Regina nodded.  Granny nodded again and handed Henry over.  He began to fuss, annoyed at being moved from his comfortable position, but remembering the steps Granny gave her, Regina carefully maneuvered him up onto her chest.

And then a miracle happened.  

Henry not only stopped crying; he actually burrowed into her, sighing contentedly.  A warm rush of maternal love washed over her, and she knew she would do anything for this little boy.

Parenting may be the hardest thing she’d ever done, but they would be okay.  They were a family.

Note: I learned how to hold babies from watching my own grandmother who liked to walk around holding babies exactly as Granny does here.  We always used to jokingly call it the “grandma choke hold”, but never fear.  Like Granny said, there is no choking involved.

Terrible Fic Idea #89: House, but make it Once Upon A Time

My dash has inexplicably been filled by House lately, leading me to rewatch the entire first season - which in turn naturally led me to think: how could I shoehorn a crossover with Once Upon A Time into this?

Or: What if Allison Cameron was replaced in the House lineup with OAUT's Emma Swan?

Just imagine it:

Following her stint in juvie, Emma Swan radically turns her life around. She gets her GED, goes to college and medical school, and lands herself a job at Princeton-Plainsboro on Dr. House's diagnostic team. She remains sharp and prickly and hesitant to trust others - less the moral center Jennifer Morrison's character was intended to be and more a House-in-the-making, though less willing to lie to patients or causally break the law to get a diagnosis.

Then early season two Henry appears on scene, casually walking into the conference room while Emma and the others are researching a case and declares himself to be her son. (For maximum impact, this should be during "Daddy's Boy," but definitely before "Hunting" and Cameron's HIV scare.)

This naturally causes some consternation, and after Emma takes Henry back home she's compelled to stay in Storybrooke and become part of the hospital staff there.

Canon proceeds more or less apace in for both series until the end of OUTA 3A, "Going Home". At that point instead of Emma and Henry starting a new life in NYC after leaving Storybrooke, they "return" to NJ. Emma takes up her old position on House's team-

-but for some reason the magic doesn't work quite as it's supposed to on House. Maybe all the Vicodin makes it easier for him to determine when his mind is playing tricks on him, or maybe he's just observant enough to catch all the little contradictions that magic would otherwise smooth over to make things seem normal.

House, naturally, treats it as just another puzzle and spends the better part of a year trying to figure it out.

He's not gotten as far as he'd like (but closer than anyone in from the Enchanted Forest might hope) when Hook shows up a la "New York City Serenade" to bring Emma back to Storybrooke. Emma, naturally, is having none of it, but House is just more intrigued, so he cuts a deal with Hook to have him admitted as their latest case in exchange for finding out the truth.

What follows is a typical House differential - only instead of doing a differential on Hook's "symptoms" House writes up all of the small contradictions and curiosities regarding Emma and her background he's picked up over the years. None of it screams fairy tale princess stranded in a world without magic, but it's definitely suggestive of something - the end result of which is a massive group road trip up to Maine to "search Hook's home", but ends up with Emma regaining her memories.

Emma remains in Storybrooke, ends up taking over the hospital there, and preferably avoids all the mess of OUAT seasons 5-7. The others return to Princeton-Plainsboro, preferably avoiding all the mess House's later seasons became. Everyone lives - if not happily ever after, then at least as the best versions of themselves.

...that's really all I have: the two major scenes of Henry appearing at Princeton-Plainsboro instead of Emma's apartment on her birthday, and Hook doing the same years later to bring her back to Storybrooke. I'm sure it can be padded out significantly, but my mind has latched on to these two scenes and won't let them go.

Bonuses include:

As I absolutely adore the relationship between Emma and Hook, keep the focus there. Her previous relationship with Neal should not be idealized at all - he was an adult, she was a kid, he took advantage of her and let her take the fall for his crimes - and this should be made clear. In no way should Snow and Charming's baby be named after Henry's birth father;

Relatedly, there should be a lot of focus on family - both of blood and by choice - and the idea that true love doesn't have to be romantic love, as is made abundantly clear in the OUAT S1 finale;

All the parallels between Belle and Rumplestiltskin's relationship and that between Chase and House. Dealer's choice on the exact nature of the latter, but I find myself wanting a happy ending for a gay couple in the "real world", so make of that what you will. (And if this skips House's weird obsession with his ex in S2 all the better.)

It's shorter than I usually have, but neither of these have ever been major obsessions for me - I mainly just want to see a cross fertilization of characters, even if its just to bring those two scenes to life. As always, feel free to adopt, just link back if you do anything with it.

not to be talking about once upon a time for some reason in *checks watch* 2022, buuuuut. hot take. they shouldn’t have killed baelfire/neal. like it’s such a whack thing to do to remove that character. i’m not saying he was some sort of fan fave that people clamored for but season 2 was so much a set-up for that character that it all feels pointless that they kill him off.

i have no clue what the original plan was in the writer’s room but i feel pretty confident that hook and emma’s relationship was expanded after seeing the chemistry with jen and colin and the fan reaction to it (i think i’ve read about that?) and that’s how they end up writing themselves into a love triangle in season 3 with neal, hook, and emma. but let’s be completely honest... they kill neal to end the love triangle, right? they don’t want emma to have to pick between her first love/baby daddy and her new attraction with hook, possibly because they feel after the ending of season 2 that she would pick neal, but that just feels like such a disservice to hook and emma as a concept. even in 3a, emma is clearly not “making a decision” other than picking henry over both of them, but hook is clearly confident in the bond he has with emma. just because she had history with neal didn’t mean she had to choose him, nor that they had to kill him off to avoid emma making a decision.

and more than the emma/neal plot, the killing off of neal is egregious because literally killing off neal metaphorically kills rumple. and look, i fucking hated rumple for 90% of the show, i’ll be real, but i do genuinely think s1-2 rumple has intriguing moments and do you know why? BECAUSE HIS SON IS HIS MOTIVATION. by killing off rumple’s son, they are effectively killing off any likability rumple had. sure, there’s still belle, but rumple is awful to belle at pretty much every turn. neal is pretty much the only place rumple is redeemable at any point in the series and we have to watch him for THREE MORE SEASONS be the fucking worst with absolutely no good motivation. anyway. hate it.

I hate that most of the fandom (and seemingly the writers too) delegated me to a love interest/component in a messy love triangle. I hate that people shit all over me because I got in the way of their favourite canon ship. I actually prefer Captain Swan to Swanfire most of the time because in canon...I don't think I was even involved with Emma at all. Platonically yes, but...if my memories serve me right Never Land stunted my age a lot, so this entire ridiculous love triangle never even happened. It drives me crazy that I've basically been reduced to a love interest to the protagonist, or an obstacle to the protagonists' love life. My canon was different enough that most of the triangle shit in season 3A probably never happened. I just wish more people would acknowledge me as a character, not as a romantic accessory. To the point where I have to be careful when looking for fanfiction, because some of it is tagged as 'Neal|Baelfire-bashing.' Gods it drives me mad.

I was an actual person, not just a person-shaped roadblock between Killian and Emma.

Ahhh okay okay so FS2 is another from my archive of fics I was writing before I started writing bts fics. It's kind of a mash-up of all the different Peter Pan stories we've gotten, but mainly season 3a of "Once Upon A Time", the Neverland Arc.

(The original fic was going to be a direct fanfiction of OUAT, but for FS2 I will be cutting all the OUAT characters)

OUAT Observation

I’ve said this before, I’ll say it again, I’ll say it forever:

Why did this show not wrap up at Season 5!?

Beyond factors like shows going beyond a fifth season are generally difficult to maintain, that ending at Season 5 would have put the final episode count at 111, and how Seasons 6 and 7 were widely considered to be the lowest points of the series quality-wise so they could have avoided that and gone out on a high note, just look at the Underworld Saga. Not only were the heroes going up against a god, in the realm of the dead that was just a stone’s throw away from Heaven and Hell, but the villains involved included Prince James who was the way he was due to major Season 1 baddie King George, Cora who was the Big Bad of Season 2, Peter Pan who was the Big Bad of Season 3A, Zelena who was the Big Bad of Season 3B, Cruella De Vil who was the most evil of the Queens of Darkness in Season 4B, and of course Rumple / Mr. Gold who’s been a major villain almost the whole way through and who now held the power of all Dark Ones, all the way back to Nimue herself. Add to that all of the redemption work and emotional closure provided to Regina and Hook as well as Zelena, and to Season 5A’s King Arthur of all people at the last minute, plus the perfect set-ups for Emma, Snow, Charming, Henry, Belle and Robin Hood’s conclusions right there...this was the most ideal time the show’s narrative could possibly wrap up at! It was like the whole show’s history coming together for one final bow before the curtain closed on it! Any showrunner or network executives with actual integrity would have recognized that and shaped the finale accordingly.

Sadly, Once Upon a Time didn’t have showrunners or network executives with actual integrity in charge of it. It had the immature and morally warped Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis as showrunners, and the chronically greedy and incompetent ABC executives overseeing them. They gave the show another season order, which meant that Robin Hood got killed, Rumple received no comeuppance, the other heroes were granted no sort of emotional closure or happy endings, and we were given a finale that had jack shit to do with the preceding story arc since its primary focus was setting up Season 6...and the most appealing aspect of that set-up, the Land of Untold Stories, didn’t even end up getting utilized much in Season 6!

The conclusion of the season could have been so much better; Hell, the season itself could have been so much better. But they blew it. The penultimate episode before the finale that wrapped the Underworld arc up was called “Last Rites”. That ended up being way too appropriate of a title, although the writers had no way of knowing that when they chose it.

Once Upon a Time is an ABC television series that involves characters from familiar works of fiction, including Peter Pan. Colin O'Donoghue was a series regular in the role of Hook, who originated as Killian Jones. Freya Tingley first played Wendy in the 21st episode of the second season and continued playing the role in a few episodes toward the end of Season 3A. Robbie Kay played the main villain role during Season 3A as Peter Pan, portrayed in the series as the father of Rumpelstiltskin, and reprised his role in a couple episodes during Season 5B and the second-to-last episode of the overall show. Rose McIver played Tinker Bell during the majority of Season 3A, then one episode during Season 3B, and one during Season 6. Characters and locations from the Peter Pan story are featured in Once Upon a Time (2011–present). It is revealed that Pan (Robbie Kay) is the father of Rumpelstiltskin (Robert Carlyle) who became young again after giving up a then-young Rumpelstiltskin.

The only thing that is correct is the right-handed Hook and his eye color of blue. But his hair is short and in truth, Captain Hook of the book would never wear such an outfit. He is portrayed as a naval officer in the beginning but turns into a pirate after his brother's death.

gideon my most beloved… he saved this marriage. it’s hard to explain but he saved everything <3 he’s my favorite guy ever ever ever of all time and literally every single thing i like today can be traced back to him. even kit. all of it goes back to gideon remember i was 15 when i met him

regina <3 she has never done anything wrong in my eyes. not even the atrocities. maybe it was a bit unnecessary to try to poison emma that time but she makes up for it i forgive her

emma…. the savior….. Thee Protagonist of all time…. she’s a hero she’s gonna bring back the happy endings and she’s going to live to see the rewards of her efforts!!! she’s just Good!!!!

one thing about me is i will always be a season six girlie i love when a show has gone on for years and built up so much that a finale like the final battle pays off in a way a season one finale never could. i loved the black fairy’s curse arc it slayed. emma’s the savior and to take away her belief in hope and love dooms them all….

another thing about me is that i will always be a season 3a girlie too. i have been weird about peter pan since i was old enough to read the pixie hollow fairy books like “vidia and the fairy crown” and “fairy dust and the quest for the egg” and once upon a time going to neverland made me worse in ways i’m still finding out about years later

tee don’t read this. the beginning of season 2 when emma and snow are trapped in the enchanted forest and david and regina are like doing the weird coparenting henry thing that’s somehow working really well actually and they can only communicate through henry and aurora’s shared nightmare hellscape. i love that whole arc so much it slays. it’s a shame the rest of that season is such a flop

not necessarily an arc per se but i adored emma and lily’s whole deal in season four. emma’s bisexual christ figure realness. lily’s judas swag. essentially gideon is just a second attempt at lily’s role, the darkness to emma’s light, etc. and it goes crazy!

underworld arc!!!! emma and killian’s orpheus and eurydice slay!!!!!! i can’t even get into it rn but i feel as though i’ve talked about it enough that you all get it <3

I never got to ask, and since my only knowledge of him was on Now Apocalypse, what do you have against Tyler gut rearranging dick Posey? Like... what is the Teen Wolf stuff that I lack knowledge from?

hm. okay. i want to preface this by saying that i really don't care about him one way or another and i don't personally have any beef against him. that being said...

the thing with posey is that at some point, i think around season 3a or 3b of teen wolf, it kinda dawned on him that people... were not watching the show because of him. at least not the majority of people, anyway. like obviously there were people invested on his character, but the fandom was vocal the most about stiles and sterek. like, they may say otherwise, but sterek was the reason teen wolf blew up on tumblr, and it was definitely the reason people kept watching despite the show being A Mess(tm). and jeff davis - the producer - definitely knew that too, since he even made the actors do some deliberate gaybaiting (the unforgettable "we're on a ship! pun intended).

and then during the tail end of season 3b, they were doing interviews with the cast. someone asked a question to them about their characters' relationships. someone asked tyler hoechlin a question about a girlfriend for derek, and then mentioned sterek, which made posey go on a deranged tirade about how sterek was a "bizarre, weird, twisted thing, and I think that anyone who pays more attention to sterek than the show isn’t watching the show for the right reasons."

which is like.... i mean. come on. would anyone call a straight ship a 'bizarre, weird, twisted thing'? most people argue that it didn't come out of a place of homophobia, but jealousy - his star was eclipsed by the fact that both dylan and sterek were more popular than him, even though he was the lead of the show.

it didn't help at all that his characters' fanbase were (and are) insufferable cunts. much like the fanbase of regina mills from once upon a time, they were the kind of people who thought that a lightskinned latino suffered more than jesus christ on the cross because they *check notes* never faced the consequences for their actions. the show had his massive flaw where it would make its main character, who it kept saying was so pure that he became an alpha werewolf entirely out of the goodness of his heart, do some terribly shitty things (like ignoring his friend's calls while his friend is being attacked by a werewolf, or literally forcing derek to give the bite to the man who murdered his entire family even though derek had been telling him for years that the bite was some special) and then never acknowledging or making him face any repercussions for it. and every time someone brought it up, the stans would go 'well, what about when stiles did THIS-' even though stiles was like. openly a shitty person and not someone who's supposed to be a bastion of good.

anyway. after that p*sey got into another mess after he did a fake coming out video on snapchat. more recently, he had the gal to ask people to donate to a gofundme of his step-sister's....college tuition. highest bider got a zoom call for him. he couldn't just create a cameo, i guess lol

he recently came out as "queer" or something, on his onlyfans where he wants people to pay to see side shots of his ass or the base of his dick or whatever. more power to him!

at this point i'm pushing 30, so i don't care about this one way or another. he's not a good enough actor to warrant more than, like, "oh this guy again?" vibes. he already shot down his career by not listening to his agents and covering his body in ugly tattoos anyway lmfao

Should I start watching once upon a time? How many seasons is it?

There are technically 7 seasons but most people will only say there are 6 because the 7th season was supposed to be a soft reboot and it didn't quite work out.

I personally didn't mind it, it wasn't fantastic like the first two seasons but it was fine lol. I want to reboot it one day myself lol.

But if you like fairy tales and like to see how they connect, it's a good show. I think the first two seasons are the best, that first season is really killer. It starts to do this thing in season 3 where it has 3A and 3B and 4A and 4B stuff where each half of the season kind of follows a new story and I personally don't think it always works but I always enjoyed the story and the casting. If there is one thing OUAT did so fucking well, was the casting.

Also there are some really great episodes, like the beauty and the beast one, is so good.

Some personal stand outs: Regina, Rumple, Snow (in earlier seasons particularly), Zelena, Merlin, Jefferson.

There is also a short lived spin-off, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland and it's not nearly as good but I did like it lol.
