The Glass Castle
Tumblr media
Movies watched in 2023
The Glass Castle (2017, USA)
Director: Destin Daniel Cretton
Writers: Destin Daniel Cretton & Andrew Lanham
Mini-review:
I don't really know how to feel about this movie, to be honest. On the one hand, the whole cast does a phenomenal job, both adults and children. The film is also very handsomely made. However, I felt like it struggled when it came to choosing a tone. It wants to be a somewhat schmaltzy tale about overcoming obstacles and finding your place in the world, but it also wants to be a gritty story about a woman who went through a really harsh childhood. I'm sure these two elements can be properly mixed, but I just don't think The Glass Castle succeeds as often as it should. By the time the movie was over, I wasn't entirely sure about what the movie wanted me to think about its characters. One thing it did achieve is making me interested in the original memoir, cause it's clear this a fascinating story that got kind of lost in translation during the adaptation process. Also, if anyone wants to watch this movie, you should probably check the content warnings first. There are several triggering scenes and situations.

So, wanted to get some hiatus rec lists going and encourage some self promo in my friends so how about sharing your top fics no matter how big or small - give us the links to your wonderful words with the Most hits/Most kudos/Most comments/Most bookmarks /Most words/Least words
I was tagged by @lovelikewildness to share my greatest ff hits but I'm a fanfic dinosaur so while this is in Ao3 parlance, I'm gonna use a mixture of Ao3 (where I am mindy_makru_tutu) and FF.net (where I am mindy35) cos not all of my fics have made it across to Ao3.
Most Hits, Kudos & Comments (on Ao3): Fugitive | Bodyguard | David x Julia | Rated M | Available on ff.net
Most Views & Reviews (on ff.net): Collateral Damage | SVU | Elliot x Olivia | Rated M | Available on Ao3
Most Faves (on ff.net): Anywhere But Here | SVU | Elliot x Olivia | Rated T | Available on Ao3
Most Bookmarks (on Ao3): The 8th Day | SVU | Elliot x Olivia | Rated E | Available on ff.net
Most Words (on Ao3): This Never Happened & The Lucky Ones (Series) | Bodyguard | David x Julia | Rated E |Available on ff.net here and here
Most Words on (ff.net): The Rice Trilogy (Series) | Cheers Darlin' | 9 Crimes | My Favorite Faded Fantasy | SVU | Elliot x Olivia | Rated M | Not Available on Ao3
Least words ever: Party of One | 30 Rock | Jack x Liz | Rated K | Not Available on Ao3 *** Author's Note: In the past, I have written 260+ stories for NCIS (Kate x Gibbs), 30 Rock (Jack x Liz), Doctor Who (Ten x Donna), Castle (Caskett), Law and Order: SVU (Elliot x Olivia), Ashes to Ashes (Gene x Alex), Bodyguard (David x Julia) and Ted Lasso (Ted x Rebecca). At some point, Ao3 helpfully decided to start importing my early NCIS stories so I figured I better get my ass in gear. I have posted a selection of my stories there, something to represent each fandom and linked to my ff.net profile where everything lives. If going to ff.net is super annoying and anyone wants some old faves posted to Ao3, just let me know.
That said, don't forget about ff.net (even if only when Ao3 goes down) and don't forget about old authors. There is good stuff on ff.net. There are gems to be found amongst dusty ole stacks. Fanfiction archives are libraries. Don't expect an algorithm. Expect an adventure. Search. Experiment. And don't forget to tell old authors what you think. We're still out there. I still get random reviews (mostly on my SVU stuff) and it makes my day just as much now as it did in the past.
And I tag @it-is-bugs @doesntgoaway @baronessblixen @alexdrakes @xyber116 @aloysiavirgata @syntax6 and...oh I don't know how many to tag and who is still writing but do it if you wanna. And that means YOU, shy fanfic writer who happened to see this and started mentally dusting off that story that didn't get the love it deserved. You have been tagged!

My Most Posted Celebrities
I've been on tumblr for ten years now. It's a long time! I've posted a lot of female celebrities in that long time, so let's have a look back at who I've posted most often. Please remember that I only post people when I have new images of them, so there are some girls who I like a lot but haven't been able to post as often as I would have liked to. And some haven't been on the list for as many years as others. But if I've posted someone like thirty times or whatever it's fair to say they're one of my favourites! So here it is, the big list of everyone I've posted five times or more. (I left Elliot Page on because I posted him a lot back in the day and didn't want to pretend otherwise.)
96 times: Elle Fanning
89 times: Hailee Steinfeld
87 times: Emma Roberts
82 times: Chloe Grace Moretz

Congratulations to ELLE FANNING and thanks to my friend @whoiwanttoday for creating the spreadsheet I still use for this!

Some great comics I really dug in 2022
Tumblr media
Here’s a few of my favorite comics of this year in no order
Ducks by Kate Beaton A memoir of a few years working in the oil sands of Canada to pay off student loans. Beaton needs no introduction as one of the best in her craft and this is an incredibly personal story that has stuck with me since I read it.
Vattu by Evan Dahm.  This one is arguably cheating, as Dahm’s been at it since 2010, but this story came to an end this September and I finally did a completed read so it merits inclusion here. His whole world, including his previous comic Rice Boy, has such a phenomenal vision and aesthetic that it’s some of my favorite fantasy stuff out there now.
Shuna’s Journey by Hayao Miyazaki and translated by Alex Dudok de Wit This is decades old at this point but just got an English-language translation. I’m an easy sell on Miyazaki but a really wonderful essay in the New Yorker by Sam Theilman  turned me on to it and is worth a read in its own right. It’s classic Miyazaki — dying world, audacious kid, fuzzy friend, incredible depth — and should not be too hard a sell.
Nancy by Olivia Jaimes Still killing it. I read it every day.  Hulkling & Wiccan Infinity Comic by Josh Trujillo, Jodi Nishijima, and Matt Milla and Love Unlimited by Josh Trujillo and tokitokoro. The first one started last year but finished in 2022, and Marvel gave them a further shot to publish these characters with the new Love Unlimited Infinity comic, which is the Marvel attempt at competing with Webtoon format and truth be told I’m digging it. I got to go on the Pull List and ramble about how much I enjoy these characters and this take on them. Great stuff.  Mr. Boop by Alec Robbins I really just love that this book actually exists.
Solver by John Allison I love Allison’s work, Bad Machinery is one of my favorite webcomics. I regretted that it was only just this year that I got around to buying all of and plowing through all of Giant Days, which was phenomenal stuff. Solver has been a followup to Bad Machinery following Allison’s best character, and I’ve enjoyed remaining in his world with a changed up pace and vibe. He’s really at the top of his game.  Two Losers from Earth by kit_is_mad Still ongoing, a Webtoon, started last year but hit its stride this year. Can’t wait to see where it goes and it looks gorgeous. High concept, just love this vibe, is also gay. Really liking this one.

Why did you elbow me? 203
Achilles Castle part 105
Lemonade and lies Part 48
Nicholas (Nick) Stephen McSwarek undercover part 12
Amanda Rollins: pov Elliot asked me why Cassidy is in Liv's office with her. Because Elliot, he was watching Noah for her. That whole DV case popped up suddenly and she needed someone to pick Noah up from school.
Joe velasco: pov a bunch of officers I really don't know well are telling stories about Munch, Fin says conspiracy theories were his bread and butter. Liv says remember the Hector Rodriguez case, Fin says don't remind me you and him were right about that one. Elliot says I don't remember that case, but you talked about it a lot in the early years.
Olivia Benson: pov because you were on vacation with your family during that case it was 1999 me and Munch were partnered together on it, Fin hadn't joined the squad yet. You know we solved it after about 13 years, in 2012 the squad got a case with a similar motive. Fin finishes the story for me mentioning about the blonde hair dye, how we tracked down the current missing kid. How cement was ordered for a building a block away from a fire claiming water damage and when we pulled up the cement in that basement there was Hector and his checkered backpack. He was in that basement the whole time under that slab of cement.
Fin tutuola: pov remember the time he got shot in the ass. He was also so happy to see you as a mother, Liv. He also wanted to win the bet, Elliot says what bet. How do you not know about the bet Elliot the one on you and Liv. You know one of the hardest calls I had to make was to tell Munch that Olivia was kidnapped, but you know what i got to call and tell him you were safe.
Olivia Benson: pov I remember bits and pieces from the hospital Munch would just sit with me to give Cassidy a break and he would talk about conspiracy theories non stop. Now that I think about it he was taking my mind off of what happened to me.
Cassidy: pov I remember Cragen trying to get ahold of Elliot with no luck, Munch and Cragen eventually helped her deal with the fact that Elliot wasn't coming to save her. Fin says that was definitely a rough time for her with Elliot not being there and her not feeling safe. Everyone continues to tell stories about Munch as we eat our pizza.
Castle: pov besides worrying about Kate I have been getting a lot of writing done. Food sounds good right about now. Alexis and Dave are eating at the dining hall at college tonight with some friends. Mother is out with a male friend of hers. I hope she doesn't bring him home with her but then again it's her choice if she wants to bring him home. Chinese food sounds good right about now. I make my way on my crutches for support, to the drawer with the take-out menus. Once I find the Chinese food menu I place my order for the egg roll, stir fry with white rice and the dumplings. Everything looks so amazing, it should only take a few minutes for my food to arrive then i can sit down and eat. I make my way to the living room to wait for the food to arrive, I decide to play a game on my phone until then. A few minutes later I hear the doorbell. My food must be here. I grab my crutches and head to the door, the delivery guy is nice enough to put the food on the table in the living room. I pay him before he leaves now I just have to find something to watch.
Esposito: pov me and Ryan are having dinner with Jenny and Lanie at the precinct. Jenny is picking up the food on the way. It's from a new Chilli place near our house. We have been waiting to try it but with Kate's health we did not want to eat it in front of her because she can't have it. That would be mean, to eat it in front of her. The sides are white rice, corn chips, sour cream and some fruity drinks. Let's hope Jenny doesn't get indigestion from this food. Then again it's not my problem if she does it's Ryan's. Once the food is placed in the break room the four of us start eating, the food looks amazing and it has the perfect amount of spices. Me and Ryan are both worried about Kate, Lanie mentions that she texts Kate and Nick regularly. So she is doing okay.
Lanie: pov besides the whole flat tire thing then yes. Esposito asks what I mean about the flat tire thing. Nick texted me asking for advice. His tire blew while they were driving and it scared/startled her. She was having a little bit of a PTSD episode. He had to give Kate her meds. He texted me a few minutes ago letting me know she was doing better and they were waiting at the repair shop for the tire to be fixed.
Officer Nicholas (Nick) Stephen McSwarek/Greig: pov the car is finally done, Kate texts Noelle to let her know we are on our way home from the repair shop. The ride home is short, I'm so thankful Noelle made us dinner. It's been an eventful day especially for Kate, I know she just wants to speak to her husband Castle. The roasted vegetables, salad and chicken look amazing. After filling our plates the 3 of us sit down to eat, Noelle is going to stay with family starting tomorrow, her sister is coming in the morning to pick her up. I pull Kate aside in the bedroom to talk privately to her. Kate says i don't know if she has any baby supplies yet and she is getting closer to her due date. Kate if you're feeling okay, why don't we head to the baby store and get a few things for Noelle. I don't know if she works or is on maternity leave but I doubt that will pay her bills. To be continued. ……….

Fic Interview Meme
I was tagged by @lovelikewildness to answer some questions on fanfic:
Name: mindy35, mindy_makru_tutu (and a bunch of variations of)
Fandoms I write for: I’m pretty much retired but I have written for “NCIS” (Gibbs/Kate), “30 Rock” (Jack/Liz), “Doctor Who” (Ten/Donna), “Castle” (Castle/Beckett), “Law and Order: SVU” (Elliot/Olivia), “Ashes to Ashes” (Gene/Alex), “Bodyguard” (David/Julia) and “Ted Lasso” (Ted/Rebecca).
Two-shot: I’ve written a lot of one-shots but occasionally a simple idea will turn out to have a little more steam in it...
Most popular multichapter: On AO3, probably the “This Never Happened” series (”Bodyguard”). On FF.net, probably my AU Rice trilogy (”SVU”).
Actual Worst part of writing: I don’t struggle with writing fanfic. It’s often a break for me from academic writing which is a far harder beast to wrangle.
How you choose your titles: A line from the show that I think is worth building on. A line from the story that sums up the theme. Or occasionally a song lyric.
Do you outline: I never start a fic without knowing where it’s going. Even with one-shots, I know the ending before I begin. But I only really outline when it comes to longer stories. Probably the story of mine that needed the most attention to structure was an Elliot/Olivia fic called “Collateral Damage” cos it jumped back and forth in time over the course of nearly twenty years.
Ideas I probably won’t get to but it would be nice: I have got some ideas for Philinda that I would like to write (cos I always fall for the ships that get shafted and they deserved better). Not sure there’s much of a readership tho, now that the show has finished. And most of my writing energy is going into my thesis so they may not come into being.
Best writing habits: Get the voices right first. This has been important for me because I have written for some pairings with very specific voices (Ten/Donna, Jack/Liz, Gene/Alex, Ted/Rebecca) but also because my stories tend to be v banter-heavy! I prefer banter to sex but also when the voice isn’t right, for me it breaks the reality of the fic.
Spicy opinions: I can’t believe this is a spicy opinion but imo, if you read, you review. If you get to the end, even of a one-shot that you have enjoyed, then you put something in the box. That’s the exchange. No lame excuses. Just contribute something. It’s not difficult.
Another spicy opinion: there seems to be an expectation that writers be readers as well (even though no one has a problem with readers just being readers). For me, I have practical reasons that limit the time I can spend on fanfic. I spend that time writing. That is my contribution. If you write AND read, then great. If you read and review, no problem! But it should also be okay just to write. It’s a contribution that takes time, energy and thought.
I’m going to tag @nervouspearl @cute-little-ali-cat @doesntgoaway @xyber116 @bexinthecity05 if y’all are still writing or wanna reminisce :)

Why did you elbow me? 185
Achilles Castle part 87
Lemonade and lies PART 30
Mentions Olivia Benson from law and order SVU.
Tanner: pov I bet that was hard for her Mr Castle says you have no idea she was a control freak at the time, she is not so much a control freak anymore. Having health issues does that to you. Her father was told by her therapist to Film and take pictures of her recovery as much as possible, that way she and her Dr's can see how far she has come down the road.
Castle: pov Some of it she hasn't seen since then it's too hard for her to watch. I still remember it like it was yesterday her dad was nice enough to text me a video labeled Katie's first steps. The therapist says I'm doing really good and don't need to use the wheelchair anymore just the crutches.
Dave: pov Alexis maybe we should make a video montage for the charity day at college. To show what type of damage a bullet can do and what it's like to recover from heart surgery . I just don't know how we would get the footage. Maybe we can ask around to see if people have footage of their recovery so we can use it. Or.
Alexis: pov Dave I know what you are going to say I will call my dad and ask him if there is any footage of Beckett from when she was recovering. I know it's not a pleasant topic or memory for Beckett. Dad should be done with therapy soon.
Kate: pov turns out the car might have been tampered with before the accident, hmm interesting I say goodbye to the mechanic and head back to the hospital to pick up Castle. The traffic wasn't too bad. Once I help Castle into the car we stop to pick up some food. He suggests brown rice bowls since they are my favorite. The line inside isn't that long and the guy knows me pretty well since I come here so much. He even gives me a free strawberry smoothie.
Castle: pov At the precinct Kate is carrying in the bags of food while I use my crutches. In the briefing room she put the food down Ryan and Esposito are explaining what they found in the papers which isn't much. Kate tells them what the mechanic said about the car being tampered with before the accident.
Kate: pov the smoothie tastes so good. I think I ate to much food after lunch the 4 of us keep looking through the papers the boys found they are a bunch of papers that proved that Blair did not cause the accident, Ryan is suddenly shouting that he found the evidence that points us right to our killer now that we know who the killer is I will send the boys to go pick up the killer. .
Esposito: pov the house looks a mess and run down, we are not sure if anyone is home, no one replies to our shouts so me and Esposito break the door down and clear the house room by room. I let Ryan handcuff our suspect who is resisting arrest.
Ryan: pov back at the station Kate says she will handle the interrogation of our killer. I put our suspect in interrogation room 1. Kate walks in the room and tells Tammy we have proof she killed her sister and that the accident that her boyfriend died in was not Blair's fault because the car had been tampered with by you Tammy. We have proof I talked to the mechanic who worked on the car before the accident.
Castle: pov I make my way over to Kate's office on my crutches, I want to do something special tonight for dinner, maybe go out. Kate suddenly starts laughing. I ask her what is so funny she says something Liv said on the phone to her. She had a random meeting at 1pp and some guy spilled his coffee on her. It took a few seconds before she realized it was Elliot who was in a rush because he was in trouble for something that had to do with his anger issues. Liv also has a rape case and the husband confessed to everything in 1 minute because he say's its not rape if you are married. I guess her day isn't going well and I have no comment on the last thing. Kate says Liv was lucky she had her bag in the car from last night and could quickly change her shirt.
Esposito: pov Castle is now in Kate's office talking with her, he brushes her hair out of her face. We solved our case, and it turns out the twin sister Tammy killed Blair because she was hanging with Tammy's boyfriend and in a shocking turn of events Tammy tampered with the car, the night of the accident she caused the accident and car fire wow.
Kate: pov ugh I have so much paperwork and I'm starting to get tired. Castle says, Kate if you don't want to go out to eat or are too tired it's fine, I know you have issues going out to eat and don't do well with very large crowds.
Castle: pov I head to the breakroom to answer my phone. It is Alexis calling, she mentions her and Dave are thinking about adding a video montage since Alexis picked the heart charity and Dave picked the end gun violence one for charity day at their college. They both want to know if there is any footage of Kate during her recovery and can I ask Kate if she would be willing to let them use the footage for the video. I tell them I know there is some footage from what Jim told me and will ask but I don't know what her answer will be. She is a very private person. I ask Kate if she is ready to head home. The ride home didn't take that long. I decided to ask Kate about the footage. To be continued. ……….

Hello there! Can you please give some suggestions of people of all genders who can play a part in a hitman/assassin society vibe a la John Wick from their 20s-30s? This particular group are called the Plague Doctors. Their leader's fc is actually your muse, Rami Malek, who is unassumingly deadly but actually is a sophisticated and charming man otherwise, and is kind of like the father figure to all his group and trains and takes care of them, because they all are taken in since young and he feels the need to make sure they grow up...as fine as they could considering their career, if that helps you conjure a better feeling of how it's like. Thank you!
Certainly! That sounds really fun.

The UK parliament’s Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee is working on its report (and recommendations) from its inquiry into the economics of music streaming. One of the big talking points during the inquiry’s evidence sessions was equitable remuneration (ER): specifically extending it from radio and TV to some streams.
The Broken Record campaign has made ER one of its key requests of the committee; labels have argued firmly against it; and (in our view, at least) the committee seems to be leaning more towards the former camp. But the committee isn’t the British government, so if ER is to be extended, ministers will need to be convinced too.
That campaign is already starting. A letter sent to Prime Minister Boris Johnson – and shown to Music Ally this morning – sees a who’s who of British musicians backing such an extension. Sir Paul McCartney, Annie Lennox, Chris Martin, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, Kate Bush, Roger Daltrey, Damon Albarn, Noel Gallagher, Laura Marling, Sir Tim Rice… and many more.
“Only two words need to change in the 1988 Copyright, Designs and Patents Act. This will modernise the law so that today’s performers receive a share of revenues, just like they enjoy in radio,” argues the letter. But it also calls for a competition inquiry (or at least a government referral to watchdog the Competition and Markets Authority); for songwriters to get a bigger share of streaming royalties; and the establishment of a dedicated regulator “to ensure the lawful and fair treatment of music makers”.
Later today, we’ll publish our quarterly Music Ally report, including our analysis of the key talking points of the inquiry, and what might happen next. One of our suggestions was that while the DCMS committee seemed sympathetic to the Broken Record campaign’s arguments, the government ministers seemed to be leaning more towards labels’ view of the world.
The letter shows that the former group are going to work hard to change that, and in wheeling out the musical big guns, the intensity of the lobbying has stepped up several notches – even before the DCMS committee’s report has come out. Labels and their representative body the BPI must now decide how best to respond.
Here is the full text of the letter, and its signatories:
———-
Dear Prime Minister,
We write to you on behalf of today’s generation of artists, musicians and songwriters here in the UK.
For too long, streaming platforms, record labels and other internet giants have exploited performers and creators without rewarding them fairly. We must put the value of music back where it belongs – in the hands of music makers.
Streaming is quickly replacing radio as our main means of music communication. However, the law has not kept up with the pace of technological change and, as a result, performers and songwriters do not enjoy the same protections as they do in radio.
Today’s musicians receive very little income from their performances – most featured artists receive tiny fractions of a US cent per stream and session musicians receive nothing at all.
To remedy this, only two words need to change in the 1988 Copyright, Designs and Patents Act. This will modernise the law so that today’s performers receive a share of revenues, just like they enjoy in radio. It won’t cost the taxpayer a penny but will put more money in the pockets of UK taxpayers and raise revenues for public services like the NHS.
There is evidence of multinational corporations wielding extraordinary power and songwriters struggling as a result. An immediate government referral to the Competition and Markets Authority is the first step to address this. Songwriters earn 50% of radio revenues, but only 15% in streaming. We believe that in a truly free market the song will achieve greater value.
Ultimately though, we need a regulator to ensure the lawful and fair treatment of music makers. The UK has a proud history of protecting its producers, entrepreneurs and inventors. We believe British creators deserve the same protections as other industries whose work is devalued when exploited as a loss-leader.
By addressing these problems, we will make the UK the best place in the world to be a musician or a songwriter, allow recording studios and the UK session scene to thrive once again, strengthen our world leading cultural sector, allow the market for recorded music to flourish for listeners and creators, and unearth a new generation of talent.
We urge you to take these forward and ensure the music industry is part of your levelling-up agenda as we kickstart the post-Covid economic recovery.
Yours sincerely,
