for some reason youtube just recommended me a shit ton of video essays on the novel “Lolita”, and how its message has been warped through adaptation so much its doing what the og book warned against. I’d read the book years ago, but oh boy did this open up a whole lotta feelings for me...
so, being the bookworm little shit that i am, allow me to rant a while.
Lolita is a book by Vladimir Nakobov, whose protagonist is an unreliable narrator, about how he becomes infatuated with, and grooms a twelve year old girl called dolores (that he calls, Lolita). The book makes an effort to show that dolores is a kid, having her pick her nose, throw tantrums, adjusts wedgies, ect. In the book, you read as Humbert Humbert, the unreliable narrator, twists these childlike situations into something creepy and sensual, to justify his own pedophilia.
Now, you’d think that in a book with an, I’ll repeat, UNRELIABLE narrator, any directors wanting to adapt it into film would take every written sentence with a heap of salt. Humbert Humbert is a narcissist. A predator. A disgusting old man with a obsession for his step daughter (whom he intentionally made his step daughter, so that he could groom her.)
But NO. Kubrik (the director of Lolita’s first film adaptation), made the 14 YEAR OLD actress become a “seductress”. He validates Humbert’s infatuation by placing responsibility on this CHILD, because she’s the one draped on a sun lounger in a “sexy” bikini, she’s the one placing long, exaggerated kisses to Humbert’s cheek, she’s the initiator.
It’s turning a story about how pedophilia and grooming is disgusting, and turns it into a love story. The actress is A MINOR. The character herself is A MINOR. And whilst, granted, Kubrik aged her up to 14 so it’d be allowed a theatre film release, it doesn’t fucking matter. She’s still a child.
By unnecessarily sexualising dolores in the film, not only did kubrik literally appeal to pedophile like Humbert Humbert, but he validated their disgusting fetish. Instead of showing us Humbert infer things this CHILD does as sexy, show us the CHILD being normal, and Humbert still being aroused by it. Show us how vile and twisted his view of her is. Show us that everything dolores “initiates” is in his head.
Don’t show him inferring thing right!
Another adaptation was made in the 90s, which wasn’t as awful, but was still pretty fucking awful in terms of betraying the og message of the book. The actress playing dolores was still a minor, and whilst she didn’t act as exaggeratedly seductive, and did act more “child-like”, she had her moments. And those moments were pretty much as bad as the Kubrik film. In the 90s film, though, they make Humbert too sympathetic, and personally it’s done in a way that is.....iffy, to say the least.
So now, we have a novel with several stage adaptations, operas and two feature length films made from it....and most of these adaptations literally become the thing the og book sought to destroy.
Pedophiles.
It doesn’t help that (because of some choice Lana Del Ray lyrics), tumblr had a phase in like 2014 where lolita was romanticised to a point where young girls saw the story as a “romance” rather than a psychological drama. They sought out a “love story” akin to that of Humbert and Dolores’s, and envied being in that situation. The media didn’t help. More copies of the book were produced, with new covers, many of which betrayed Nakabov’s demands. He asked for no young girls to ever be on his book cover, for...obvious reasons given the books message and Nakobov’s personal stances.
Did cover designers listen after he died? Of course they fucking didn’t.
People got Lolita copies with teenage girls’ legs on the cover, girls suggestively sucking lollipops, girls in compromising positions....which is disgusting, misleading, and a fucking betrayal of the author.
Nakobov one taught at a university, and when several girls dressed up as Lolita for halloween, he was horrified.
Do I blame Kubrik for most, if not all of this? Yeah, pretty much. He made the decision to romanticise the story in his adaption...the rest just followed suit because it sold and fit their model for society. It catered to the heterosexual male gaze, especially the gaze of pedophilic men, and in a patriarchal society that benefits a lot off of sexualising women (particularly YOUNG women), thats the perfect combination.
So, why, at 4:38 in the morning am I writing a fucking essay on tumblr about a book i read ages ago and almost forgot existed?
idfk
I guess i was just super pissed at how warped the message of the book got through time. It was like a massive, 60+ year long game of (for lack of a better term) Chinese Whispers. And at the end of the game, in the 2010s, we were so far away from the original point of the novel that we may as well have been talking about a different book.
Nakobov is probably thrashing and rolling and turning in his grave, because a cautionary tale about child grooming somehow became a “love story” idolised by a large sum of teens/young adults on the internet.
It is a betrayal of the author, a disgrace to the novel, and as a writer it’s really pissed me off.
it’s now 4:48 exactly in the morning, and this rant has gone on for WAYYY too long already. I doubt anyone even ended up reading this whole thing, but hey, that’s what tumblr is for, right? Anonymously ranting about random subjects at ungodly hours, instead of taking ur sleep medication and lying down like a responsible person.
That’s why this site is a breeding ground for chaos.
And honestly I’d have it no other way.
So...yeah. Nakobov deserved better.

Author Spotlight: Gleefuldarrencrissfan Day 2
Tumblr media
Author: @gleefuldarrencrissfan
Share one of your strengths.
I've been told that I do a great job writing in each character's voice, especially Blaine, Kurt, Santana, Brittany, and Finn.  It's very important to me that my characters remain true to who they are.  I work very hard to make sure that each one sounds like they would in the show.
I've also been told that I'm great at cliffhangers.  Honestly, I end on cliffhangers a lot as I try to figure out which route I plan to take for the story.  I map out stories, but sometimes, the story takes me in a different direction.  I also like to take suggestions from my readers.  Many times, I have multiple scenarios on the direction in which the story can go.  I love keeping my readers on their toes.
Share one of your weaknesses.
Well, because I have so many scenarios running through my head, I sometimes get stuck, and so, I don't update regularly.  I used to try to publish weekly or more, but as a mom of two, a full time assistant in a high-needs classroom, an avid crafter, and a member of a band, my plate stays pretty full.  I hope that my readers will subscribe and drop a comment from time to time to remind me to keep writing.
Which fic has been the hardest to write?
I'm going to bring up two, Dueling Duets and Love, Blaine.  Dueling Duets is a complex fic with many characters and a very intricate plot.  On top of that, Blaine has PTSD, as do I.  It became too painful to finish this, so it is the only fic of mine that is abandoned.  I would like to finish it, but I just don't see that happening any time soon.
Love, Blaine was so difficult for me because I wrote it all before publishing, and I thrive on feedback.  I kept going back and rewriting scenes over and over because I just couldn't make up my mind about certain things.  I also get anxious with a timeline hanging over my head, and so I went past the deadline.  Unfortunately, my appendix decided to burst the week I was supposed to publish, so I was trying to write through the pain.  I did finish it, and I'm proud of it, but I probably won't put myself through that again.
Which fic has been the easiest to write?
Private Messages, by far.  Honestly, it was so easy because Kurt was me in a sense, a fanfic author, desperate for feedback on his writing.  I also outlined this fic thoroughly, and so it just seemed to flow when I got to a certain point.  It is by far, my most popular fic, and honestly, it is my favorite of all of the ones that I've written.  Don't get me wrong.  It was very complex, bouncing back and forth from Blaine's and Kurt's perspectives, with plotlines from the show, Kurt's story, and the actual story all coming together and interweaving at times making it difficult to write, but I always knew where it was going, and so it was the easiest to finish.
Is writing your passion or just a fun hobby?
It's one of my passions, along with music and crafting.  I'm an artist at heart, and so I'd never be happy or fulfilled in life if I wasn't creating in one shape or form.  I honestly love the way art makes you feel, both as the artist and as the person affected by other people's art.  My favorite thing is one someone tells me how my writing or work made them feel.
I'm also writing educational children's books, and I hope to inspire kids in the future to love to learn, and so it is a major passion of mine to be a published author and get my books out there for kids to read.
Is there an episode or character or arc above all others that inspires you just a little bit more?
Blaine Anderson.  He was by far the character that inspires me the most, probably because I see myself in him, the confident, happy performer who is really quite insecure and maybe even depressed. I wish that the show would have let us see more of his personal life.  At felt like, at times, he was just Kurt's boyfriend, but he was so much more than that.  It would have been nice to actually see his home, his parents, and his brother to get greater insight on why he is the way he is.  Thank god for fanfiction.
What’s the best writing advice you’ve ever come across?
Just write.  The first draft does not have to be perfect.  That's what editing is for.  Get yourself a beta, dig in, and just get the words on the page.  No one can read your work if the pages are all in your head.
What’s the worst writing advice you’ve ever come across?
Stick to what you know.  That's what research is for.  Branch out.   Explore.  Interview and talk to others.  Although, if you are researching something embarrassing, for example, Brazilian waxing, use incognito mode.  lol.
If you could choose one of your fics to be filmed, which would you choose?
Private Messages.  I just love this story, and I think it would best translate into a movie.  Besides, Blaine is an actor in this one, so it works.
What’s your process? Do you write your story from start to finish, or do you write the scenes out of order? Do you use any tools, like worksheets or outlines? What are the perfect writing conditions for you?
Ha ha.   I find it funny that I have a process because it depends on the fic I'm writing at the time.  for my more complex stories, I do best when I map them out first.  I don't do a complex map, just a basic synopsis of the first 10 chapters or so, and then a rough outline afterward.  Of course, I keep it a soft outline, and I also plan a few other scenarios in case the story goes in a different direction.  Even Chris Colfer says that his characters surprise him in his stories, and so I'm in good company, I suppose.
However, on my shorter stories like Rim Job, and idea just comes to me, and I just write what comes to me, and then I even take suggestions from my readers about further chapters.  I guess it just depends on the tone of the fic.  If it's serious, I'm much more structured, but on my less serious pieces, I just have fun and write.
The perfect conditions are when I'm alone (be it when others are sleeping or out of the house) and I can just allow my muse to work.  I put on some background noise (Glee music or episodes) for inspiration and just sit down in front of my laptop with my notebooks.  Many times, I have scenes written in my notebooks before I type them out (I write when I'm waiting at the dr.'s office or at work during a break, ect) so all I have to do is type and polish the scene.  Unfortunately, I have several scenes in my notebooks that haven't made it into a word document yet just because of lack of time.  Hopefully, I will catch up this summer.

Check out Gleefuldarrencrissfan’s Fics
Somewhere Only We Know -  Blaine has three little words on his mind when he says good bye to Kurt in the court yard at McKinley. Can he make himself declare them out loud? An alternate ending to "Born This Way"
Silly Love Songs -  It's Valentine's Day, and Blaine had plans to serenade Jeremiah. But what if Blaine discovered the doodle Kurt made in Silly Love Songs before he serenaded Jeremiah? The scene at the Lima Bean is canon and everything to the point of Kurt sketching the doodle, but the ending, of course will be how I had hoped it would've happened.
Courage -  Do you believe that one moment can change the course of your life? That one event change the way you saw everything, or do you think it's a series of moments that build from one experience to the next. A year ago, I would've said that was crazy. But I'm not the same guy that I was a year ago.

Hey Lexi, how are you? do you have any writing tips for a beginner writer?
Hey babe! I'm fine love how are you?
Now advice here we go! There are a few things I'd say but first I will say writing is different for everyone and we all have different ways of doing it. I'm pretty chaotic if I'm honest.  I get the bear bones and some dialogue then tend to jump about in the chapter 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ So I will just share some of the things I have realised along the way~
First up is dont be scared. With me I was terrified to start mainly because I wasnt sure people would be into the things I'm into. But thats not the case, so dont be scared to write what you want. There will always be someone who enjoys it, but remember you cant please everyone and you dont have to. Its your blog and your stories so do what you want!
Write what you feel, don't put constraints on yourself it can stress you out and suck the fun out of it, if what your writing ends up being short then its short it doesn't matter. Thats the same with genre (fluff, smut, angst ect) sometimes your just not in the mood to write a particular fic, its completely fine. But if you feel you need to get a particular piece done to get in the right mood I listen to music or read fics. I have made playlists for smut, ddlg, angst, yandere ect. And I also have playlists for fandoms. I collect OST albums from the shows, films and games. So if I want to write witcher I listen to the playlist that has my witcher and skyrim albums in them as I'm writing it really helps me.
When writing longer stories try to plan it out anything helps from a short list of bullet points to dialogue and snippets of writing,  jotting it down somewhere helps and more often then not gets the juices flowing and before you know it you have the 'bare bones' of a chapter/story.
You can always come back to a chapter at a later date, i have chapters half written from months ago. Not everything has to be done at once.
Describe things with all the senses and ask yourself questions, like for instance if some one spoke how did they say it? was the reader/character close enough to feel it? what was the reader/characters reaction? what do they think? See? Smell? Hear? Taste? all these things can create a mood to the scene without any actual dialogue. but descriptions don’t have to be superlong paragraphs either, sometime’s leaving a little to the readers imagination can work out better in the end.
You dont have to use every idea! This was a big one for me, for some chapters I've had far too many ideas to fit in so have to chop and change it. And in doing so sometimes the direction changes completely! Thats okay remember its your story and if it doesn't stick to the plan exactly no-one will know once its posted, some pieces do that and 'write themselves’
I try to write things that I've experienced to a certain degree that way I find it easier to describe it, like reliving a moment or a feeling. Or just somthing similar. For instance I am short ass.. So I find it easier writing for the perspective of a smaller person. Or making a character left handed, because I know how annoying it is being left handed. I know some people don't do this but It's a personal preference.
You will be your harshest critic. Its a given there will always be something you want to tweak after you posted, or a little typo (in my case tonnes) its fine to. This is a hobby and we are not selling these books they are free to read there is no need for them to be completely perfect.
Finally but probably the most important is have fun, I really truly belive that as a reader you can feel if the writer was having fun and enjoyed writing it.

Okay okay for Konnyboy, 1-10, 12, 13, 18, 21, 26, 30, 31, 36, 42, 45, aaaaand uhhh 49
babe p l s lol
A LOT about fighty boi (in bnha universe) under readmore!
1. What’s their full name? Why was that chosen? Does it mean anything?
Konstantin Ezekial Blovasky! He was named primarily because his father was a Russian immigrant and his mom wanted to embrace his father’s culture along with hers. There’s not much sentimental thought put into Kon’s name, and tbh I can’t actually remember much about my thought process behind naming him
2. Do they have any titles? How did they get them?
Uhhhhhhhh h h hh h hhh hh h h He technically should have a few military ranks and he was honorably discharged, but see, the thing is I have enough military knowledge to fake it to someone who knows nothing about the military. Idk enough to actually say what ranks or whatever he has.
He was, however, a Warden... though if you call him that you’d better be prepared to run
3. Did they have a good childhood? What are fond memories they have of it? What’s a bad memory?
Kon had a terrible childhood, partially because he grew up believing he was quirkless. He also grew up the son of an immigrant and a rather helpless, chubby child - Kon as a kid was always getting into fights and learned very quickly how to fight back.
His mom is absolutely the majority of his fondest memories - Mama B taught him how to use a gun, how to treat a lady, she raised a proper gentleman through and through and she was a redneck badass alllllllll the way.
4. What is their relationship with their parents? What’s a good and bad memory with them? Did they know both parents?
Kon never knew his dad Stephen, because his father’s citizenship in the US was dependent on him completing several tours in the United States military. This is actually a pretty normal way to get a US citizenship and Kon’s father was pretty glad to do it. He met Theresa and they got married right before he left - technically he could’ve gotten citizenship through the marriage, but the marriage itself was last minute.
Unfortunately Stephen was killed in a training accident when Kon was a baby and it lead to Kon’s extreme dislike of people mishandling or joking around with guns. One of Kon’s worse memories is his mother crying as she sobbed out how his father died when she considered him old enough.
One of Kon’s BEST memories is his mother watching proudly as he left on his first tour. His absolute worst memory is coming home to nobody.
5. Do they have any siblings? What’s their names? What is their relationship with them? Has their relationship changed since they were kids to adults?
Nope! Kon’s a single child, Theresa was too heartbroken to have another husband.
6. What were they like at school? Did they enjoy it? Did they finish? What level of higher education did they reach? What subjects did they enjoy? Which did they hate?
Kon didn’t enjoy school because despite his straight to the point nature he’s really not a school type person. He got rather middling grades that bordered on nearly failing when he had some particularly rough years. He was a very angsty, angry teen. He ended up leaving high school and heading into the military right away once he graduated.
Though he usually enjoyed history and government classes, rules and systems work great for him. He HATED any classes that had philosophy in them because high school teachers are never looking for proper philosophical answers they’re looking for a Specific Answer lol
7. Did they have lots of friends as a child? Did they keep any of their childhood friends into adulthood?
Kon had a few people he hung out with - and like, two girlfriends - but no, not anyone he kept contact with. Nobody was particularly surprised when he left and never came back.
8. Did they have pets as a child? Do they have pets as an adult? Do they like animals?
Kon had a pet goldfish as a child and then his mom proceeded to get him a brand new one every time it died. This led Kon to believe he had one goldfish most of his childhood when in fact, neither of them were good at taking care of aquatic animals. The goldfish was named Mike and Kon didn’t learn the Truth until he graduated high school and was rather Horrified
9. Do animals like them? Do they get on well with animals?
He likes them well enough. They’re a responsibility and he doesn’t see much reason to have them. He’s perfectly content to interact with other people’s animals and never have his own. Most animals are ambivalent towards him.
10. Do they like children? Do children like them? Do they have or want any children? What would they be like as a parent? Or as a godparent/babysitter/ect?
Kon is both a GREAT and a TERRIBLE influence on children. He won’t lie, he doesn’t blunt the hard truth, and he cusses like a motherfucking sailor. This means that when babysitting, kids LOVE him, but their parents certainly do not. He’s the PERFECT caretaker for traumatized, cynical children whomst hate society
He ends up adopting the two lovely genderless duo Andi and Rosey and Kon is officially a Dad. He’s so weak. He didn’t expect to be overcome with so much emotion. The kids fall asleep on him one night and he carries them to bed and he actually stops and cries because. Oh my god. He has children. They’re so precious.
12. What is their favourite food?
He doesn’t much care about food but he likes corn nuts. Unfortunately he can’t really eat them after the Desert Incident because his jaw is weak on the left side and corn nuts are HARD AF. He’ll still suck on the barbecue ones.
13. What is their least favourite food?
Again, he’s not really into food stuff. He can’t stand anything Hot after the Uncident though and he hates liquids because they tend to spil out of his mouth easily.
18. What’s their favourite genre of: books, music, tv shows, films, video games and anything else
Kon loves mystery novels, watching and bitching good naturedly about shitty reality TV/soap operas/B-Movies, and every time he calls the plot like ten minutes in. The kids are so mad.
21. Do they have a temper? Are they patient? What are they like when they do lose their temper?
Kon is odd, certain things will trigger his temper very easily, and he’s VERY easily irritable, but in certain situations he can be surprisingly patient, like with kids. He gets very pissy very fast with grown ass adults who should know better. Kon cusses a lot as a general rule but he can get downright vicious with the cursing and insults when somebody pisses him off. And while he doesn’t resort to violence without due reason, he really, really is not above whooping someone’s ass just because they pissed him off.
26. How do they act when they’re happy? Do they sing? Dance? Hum? Or do they hide their emotions?
Kon is usually oddly quiet when he’s happy. Sometimes he may smile idly or just sit and stare off, chilling. If he’s around people he doesn’t like he ups the cheerful factor just to fuck with them, because he’s a known Grouchy Asshole. But in private he’ll possibly hum and rumble, talking to himself. He has a very nice gravelly/raspy voice. He also may seek out casual physical affection when relaxed and happy. Just holding hands or a hand on someone’s arms or bumping shoulders.
30. Do they exercise? Regularly? Or only when forced? What do they act like pre-work out and post-work out?
Kon is probably letting himself go at “this” current point and he doesn’t work out as often as he should. When he gets really, really angry he goes to a gym and beats up people/punching bags until he’s black and blue. But otherwise he’s mostly just older muscle hidden under some chub.
After all, exercising means you get sweaty and very, very hot.
31. Do they drink? What are they like drunk? What are they like hungover? How do they act when other people are drunk or hungover? Kind or teasing?
Kon never drinks. If he does get drunk, he’s a giggly dissociate drunk who stares off into the distance and chuckles ominously.
36. What are they good at? What hobbies do they like? Can they sing?
Kon’s good at managing and following orders. He’s also good at breaking orders when he needs to. He... doesn’t really have hobbies? Having a pseudo-personality take over your entire mental state and leaving you with several years of blurry, blank memories kind of fucks up your concept of self. He’s honestly trying to figure out what he even likes at this point. Reading and being a Dad seems to be a good thing that he likes.
He in fact can sing, but not very traditionally well. He’s a bit tone deaf as well but his voice is really nice to listen to regardless. He’s pretty deep!
42. What are their goals? What would they sacrifice anything for? What is their secret ambition?
See, Kon has no idea at this point.
After the Incident and the People, he barely even knows his own mind anymore. He’s trying to rediscover himself and what he even cares about. His whole life is going through a crisis.
However, he does seem to enjoy the kids, and he damn well will drop everything and anything to take care of them and protect them. He’s quickly learning that caring about himself might be hard but he damn well can care about others.
45. How do other people see them? Is it similar to how they see themselves?
People who don’t know him personally see him as a rough, grouchy, constantly scowling asshole. And... he is.
But people who know him better know that he’s just a rather private person who’s been through a lot and they can tell when he’s in good moods or not. He sees himself as an honest, serious man who isn’t very social or very good at the social game. He’s very well aware of the type of person he puts himself out to be though. It helps keep people away generally.
49. What is their most valued object? Are they sentimental? Is there something they have to take everywhere with them?
Kon used to have a picture of him and his mom that he used to carry around with him. Somewhere around a certain timeframe, he lost it... he feels really shitty about it. Otherwise he’s not too sentimental.

OC questions - all of them for any two of your OCs
OH MY GOD I STARTED THIS 8BILLION YEARS AGO AND THEN SAVED A DRAFT AND FORGOT ABOUT IT. Sorry. But i really enjoyed this a lot, especially working more on Anabelle’s quirks and likes and dislikes.
For you my Twin Brain Twin, my own twins! Hello Talbot sisters.
1. What’s their full name? Why was that chosen? Does it mean anything?
Both Mina and Anabelle are named for characters from their mother’s favorite literature- specifically, Annabel Lee and Mina Harker. Anabelle has always been annoyed that Mina is an actual character while she has been “the dead girl” since she was born.
2. Do they have any titles? How did they get them?
In school they were The Dumb One and The Bitch.
3. Did they have a good childhood? What are fond memories they have of it? What’s a bad memory?
They had a fairly miserable childhood. They have few memories that don’t include or at least end in their father hitting their mother, and later them. But they used to enjoy time they spent away from their parents when they used to be able to play pretend. They would go to a deep place in the woods and play games together and not think about going back to the house until it got dark. Worst memory is definitely the day their mother died.
4. What is their relationship with their parents? What’s a good and bad memory with them? Did they know both parents?
Kind of answered above. They felt nothing but fear for their father. Their mother is a bit more complicated. They wanted to love her, they really did. But their frustration with her for being too afraid to leave their father, coupled with her being emotionally distant to protect herself make her a hazy sort of figure in their memory.
5. Do they have any siblings? What’s their names? What is their relationship with them? Has their relationship changed since they were kids to adults?
Anabelle always wanted younger siblings and for a long time, didn’t understand why their mother wouldn’t give them one.
6. What were they like at school? Did they enjoy it? Did they finish? What level of higher education did they reach? What subjects did they enjoy? Which did they hate?
They only attended through middleschool publicly. Halfway through seventh grade, they were pulled without warning and homeschooled. They were terrified at the prospect, even though they hated school and their classmates. Anabelle was good with science and still enjoys studying the lab sections of her degree. Mina was always better with English, but was mocked for it at home.
7. Did they have lots of friends as a child? Did they keep any of their childhood friends into adulthood?
They always made friends… briefly. More acquaintances. No one lasted very long for various reasons. When Anabelle liked someone more, she would blame Mina for chasing them away and visa versa.
8. Did they have pets as a child? Do they have pets as an adult? Do they like animals?
They both tried to bring home pets when they were younger, but their mother always made them get rid of them before their father found out. Anabelle cried for days when they had to bring a dog she found to the pound.
9. Do animals like them? Do they get on well with animals?
Animals do not like Mina. She tries way too hard with them and her tension makes them nervous. She tries anyway though and they’ve had a cat or two since their father left. They keep running away though.
Anabelle does better with animals, though it’s a hit and a miss. She needs pets with a certain personality to work with her. They help to mellow her out, but unfortunately, none have worked out long enough for her to see any lasting benefits.
10. Do they like children? Do children like them? Do they have or want any children? What would they be like as a parent? Or as a godparent/babysitter/ect?
Neither of them are good with children at all. Mina, again, tries WAY too hard- babytalk and all. Kids are VERY turned off by her forced cheer and awkwardly deliberate silliness.
Anabelle refuses the company of anyone and everyone under the age of 16. If approached by a child, she will either ignore them or say something entirely age inappropriate to try to scare them off or summon a guardian to whisk them away.
11. Do they have any special diet requirements? Are they a vegetarian? Vegan? Have any allergies?
Mina has been a vegetarian since they were teenagers. Both the twins are somewhat anemic and have trouble balancing their diet.
12. What is their favourite food?
Mina loves Kimchii. Like- irrationally. Anabelle likes wild rice soup.
13. What is their least favourite food?
Mina honestly gags if anything is too close to the texture of meat. Anabelle can’t stand the texture of raw tomato.
14. Do they have any specific memories of food/a restaurant/meal?
They both remember various parties they weren’t allowed to attend when they were younger. They always hung around the kitchens eating the food anywya, but they always felt like the good stuff was brought out before they got a chance to taste it.
15. Are they good at cooking? Do they enjoy it? What do others think of their cooking?
No. Thus plot and Autumn.
16. Do they collect anything? What do they do with it? Where do they keep it?
Anabelle starts collecting things occasionally, but always gets rid of it all when in a bad spell. Mina thinks of the staff as a collection of sorts. Or a team she’s captain of. She curates it carefully, but she’s less in control than she would like to think.
17. Do they like to take photos? What do they like to take photos of? Selfies? What do they do with their photos?
Anabelle had a passing interest in photography when they were children. She was a little obsessed with getting a perfect picture of their mother, but she always turned or covered her face. Mina is almost as camera shy as their mother and now Anabelle only lets people take photos of her when she’s drunk or high.
18. What’s their favourite genre of: books, music, tv shows, films, video games and anything else
Anabelle reads a lot of true crime and it is patently Not Good For Her. She watches a lot of different Tv, but only gets involved with things for short spurts. Doesn’t watch a lot of film.
Mina loves 80s teen movies more than anything else. Jane Austen and the like. Very little tv shows.
They watch reality tv together though. Like all the worst ones.
19. What’s their least favourite genres?
Anabelle can’t stand any of the regency romance bullshit Mina loves. Mina is upset by all the true crime.
20. Do they like musicals? Music in general? What do they do when they’re favourite song comes?
Mina loves musicals and live theatre, but never goes to see anything live. She likes a lot of different genres, but is partial to minimalist arrangements.
Anabelle doesn’t like musicals and prefers music without lyrics.
21. Do they have a temper? Are they patient? What are they like when they do lose their temper?
Mina is very patient, but she holds a grudge.
Anabelle is always angry about someting, but it rarely stays the same thing for long.
22. What are their favourite insults to use? What do they insult people for? Or do they prefer to bitch behind someone’s back?
Ooooo boy. Anabelle likes to humiliate people. her favorite way to torment her sister is to accuse her of having a never-to-be-requited crush on someone and infantizing her by saying she will never have sex even though she fantasizes about it like a middle schooler. There’s always just enough truth in it all to sting.
Mina tries her best not to let her temper get the better of her, but when she does, her insults slip out in little casual belittling comments like “you’re being stupid.” and “why do you even care?”
23. Do they have a good memory? Short term or long term? Are they good with names? Or faces?
Anabelle struggles with memory, it’s one of the things she’s working on in therapy. her short term is very good, but she forgets whole months of time from a year or more ago.
Mina has a good memory, but has trouble studying things.
24. What is their sleeping pattern like? Do they snore? What do they like to sleep on? A soft or hard mattress?
Both sisters struggle with insomnia. Mina’s bed is piled so high with throw pillows and stuffed animals, she gets buried. Anabelle likes a hard mattress and sometimes has panic attacks if she feels anything too close to her.
25. What do they find funny? Do they have a good sense of humour? Are they funny themselves?
Anabelle usually only laughs at others’ expense. Mina likes when other people joke around, but is terrible at being funny herself.
26. How do they act when they’re happy? Do they sing? Dance? Hum? Or do they hide their emotions?
Mina is a quiet smiler, but can also get chatty with people she’s comfortable with. This can end up being offputting, so she tries to keep to the quiet smiling.
Anabelle shows affection by uniting with someone against others. But when she’s in a particularily good mood, she will keep negative subjects to a minimum and just talk about neutral or positive things.
27. What makes them sad? Do they cry regularly? Do they cry openly or hide it? What are they like they are sad?
Mina is easily upset by conflict. She just wants peace and will cry if she can’t make that peace happen. She hides it though, unless she can use it to gain more control over a situation.
Anabelle is almost always sad. She’s sad because she can’t make sense of her life, and whenever she figures more out, it’s something that makes her even more sad. She doesn’t cry much, but when she does, she wouldn’t be caught dead letting anyone see.
28. What is their biggest fear? What in general scares them? How do they act when they’re scared?
Mina is terrified of losing control of her life. She’s also afraid of the afterlife. She doesn’t like thinking about what’s possibly waiting for her or anyone. She doesn’t like thinking if they are all going to the same place. When she’s afraid she tries harder and harder to gain control of things around her.
Anabelle fears the unknown. This includes the afterlife, like her sister. It also includes the blank spaces in her memory.
29. What do they do when they find out someone else’s fear? Do they tease them? Or get very over protective?
Both of them, it depends on the person and how they feel about them. If they like the person, they will hold the information safe and try to keep it from coming up. If it is someone they don’t like, Mina will use it to find balance in the event of conflict and Anabelle will use it to feel superior and humiliate that person.
30. Do they exercise? Regularly? Or only when forced? What do they act like pre-work out and post-work out?
Mina doesn’t exercise except short walks around the estate. Anabelle has tried running before, but couldn’t keep up the pattern since she always pushed herself too hard and didn’t know how to ease into it.
31. Do they drink? What are they like drunk? What are they like hungover? How do they act when other people are drunk or hungover? Kind or teasing?
Mina will drink casually. Anabelle is a functioning alcoholic.
32. What do they dress like? What sorta shops do they buy clothes from? Do they wear the fashion that they like? What do they wear to sleep? Do they wear makeup? What’s their hair like?
Both of the twins wear that kind of 50s retro hipster girl mashup that was so popular about five years ago. They buy most of their clothes online. They both favor slips and nightgowns and silk robes for sleeping. They both use pretty basic makeup, more concerned with concealing than artistry. They favor simple hairstyles, but will spend time and effort on it for special occasions.
33. What underwear do they wear? Boxers or briefs? Lacey? Comfy granny panties?
Anabelle is an understructure queen. Girdles and spanx and cinchers galore.
Mina wears beautiful underthings, but doesn’t understand how they translate to supporting her body beneath her clothes.
34. What is their body type? How tall are they? Do they like their body?
Anabelle and Mina are very similar in body type, but as mentioned in above, Anabelle understands presenting her body better, and this results in Mina feeling self conscious and frustrated by the comparison. They are average in size all around.
35. What’s their guilty pleasure? What is their totally unguilty pleasure?
Anabelle loves gardening, but will never talk with anyone about it. the pleasure she SHOULD be guilty about, however, is terrorizing Mina and the Mercys.
Mina (perhaps unsurprisingly) has a huge collection of cheesy bodice ripper novels. But she should (and doesn’t) feel guilty about is her manipulative nature.
36. What are they good at? What hobbies do they like? Can they sing?
Both are very good studys. Mina is particularly good at english, while Anabelle is very into the analytical sciences. They both like to read and Anabelle is a particularly good gardener. The greenhouse and breakfast terrace are her domain. Neither twin can sing very well, though mina tried in high school to take lessons.
37. Do they like to read? Are they a fast or slow reader? Do they like poetry? Fictional or non fiction?
Both read a lot and are very methodical in their reading. Slow and steady. A lot of non-fiction for both of them, but Mina has her erotica.
38. What do they admire in others? What talents do they wish they had?
Mina has a strong affinity for people with strong loyalty. Conversely, Anabelle is attracted to the self sufficient.
39. Do they like letters? Or prefer emails/messaging?
Both prefer email as a means of communication. Or phone calls.
40. Do they like energy drinks? Coffee? Sugary food? Or can they naturally stay awake and alert?
Both tea and coffee drinkers. Especially during finals time.
41. What’s their sexuality? What do they find attractive? Physically and mentally? What do they like/need in a relationship?
*slams down binder full of notes and scenarios* I’M SO GLAD YOU ASKED.
September House being a script, there are several things that, given funding, cast and crew, I would leave up to other members of the team. One of these is the possible sexualities of the Talbots.
Early in the script, there is a scene in which Anabelle, looking to humiliate Mina, suggests that her sister harbors a crush on Leo. If I had a cast, I would absolutely leave it up to the actors playing the Mercys and the Talbots whether or not this is true. Anabelle would probably be most likely to say something like this if it were true- or she thought it was true. HOWEVER. She is prone to projecting a lot of her perceived weaknesses onto her sister. Also I kind of see her as rather guarded about sexuality and any deviation from a perceived norm, so maybe she’s misinterpreting the direction of Mina’s crush. Maybe some of both. So it would be up to the four actors to work out their dynamic and decide whether mina really does have a crush on Leo, whether it’s on Max, or if Anabelle is attracted to one or the other. Or none of the above.
So… short version: both the twins’ sexualities are ambiguous. Though I probably lean towards lesbian Anabelle and grey ace Mina.
I think they both are attracted to the qualities in others they admire as listed above. Neither have had many real romantic relationships. Mina likely none, Anabelle maybe a few hookups that she didn’t feel fully comfortable with so she ended them. Probably messily.
42. What are their goals? What would they sacrifice anything for? What is their secret ambition?
I think Anabelle’s goal in life is to escape her past. Unfortunately, this does not work out.
Mina’s is of course, to have control and complete peace in her home. I think she genuinely does want Anabelle to be included in this peace, but is too realistic to fight strongly for it.
43. Are they religious? What do they think of religion? What do they think of religious people? What do they think of non religious people?
Nope. Not many thoughts on religion- except Anabelle is vaguely aware that Leo was likely raised catholic and factors that into her stereotypes of both of the Mercys.
44. What is their favourite season? Type of weather? Are they good in the cold or the heat? What weather do they complain in the most?
Anabelle loves summer, while Mina is a huge winter person. Summer allows Anabelle to garden more and get out of the house where she can feel and think more clearly. Mina likes holy up and getting cozy.
45. How do other people see them? Is it similar to how they see themselves?
People often see Mina as weak and pitiable. I think Mina can feel very sorry for herself, but she knows what she is capable of and would rather others didn’t.
People do not think very highly of Anabelle, and she feels the same toward herself.
46. Do they make a good first impression? Does their first impression reflect them accurately? How do they introduce themselves?
Mina is a hit and a miss with first impressions. It largely depends on the other person. she does well with people who are patient and have a protective instinct, but not well with those with short tempers
Anabelle makes awful first impressions, pretty much all around.
47. How do they act in a formal occasion? What do they think of black tie wear? Do they enjoy fancy parties and love to chit chat or loathe the whole event?
Their parents used to have fancy parties at the house all the time and when they got older, they were expected to attend. They are both very bad at this kind of event and normally stand off to one side together, not speaking to anyone unless approached.
48. Do they enjoy any parties? If so what kind? Do they organise the party or just turn up? How do they act? What if they didn’t want to go but were dragged along by a friend?
Mina prefers small gatherings of people. Anabelle throws parties at the house, but really they’re just an excuse to get very drunk/high in a way she doesn’t deem “pathetic” and a way to exert control over the house she hates so much.
49. What is their most valued object? Are they sentimental? Is there something they have to take everywhere with them?
Mina will never leave the house. She feels an odd sense of loyalty to it, almost as strong as her loyalty to the Mercys.
Anabelle did finally get a decent picture of their mother and keeps it safely hidden away. No one else has seen it and she likes it that way.
50. If they could only take one bag of stuff somewhere with them: what would they pack? What do they consider their essentials?
Mina would be terrible at packing a go bag. She would pack far too much of some things, and not nearly enough of others. But she would be good enough to pack have her phone and charger on her at all times.
Anabelle would actually be better at this. She would leave some things out just because she has never traveled much before, but she would not make as many simple mistakes as Mina.

Note
all of them for embla!
I’m skipping questions that aren’t applicable
1. What’s their full name? Why was that chosen? Does it mean anything?
Embla Blomqvist. Embla means elm tree, and it’s also the name of the first woman in Norse mythology. It might not have an apparent meaning at the surface, but who knows? Maybe it’ll be significant at some point?
Blomqvist means flower-twig, continuing the plant theme. And with such a strong plant theme in her name, her personality and the fact that she’s a changeling, you’d think she’d be a log changeling, but she is in fact a troll changeling with a somewhat ironic name. Part of why I chose it was because rhytmically, it flows pretty well because of the two ‘bl’-sounds, at least if u ask me
3. Did they have a good childhood? What are fond memories they have of it? What’s a bad memory?
Her childhood was… decent. She grew up somewhat detached from people, and not always by choice, but she also didn’t have anything to compare with, so she didn’t actively suffer either. Things got better when she met Berri, tho
4. What is their relationship with their parents? What’s a good and bad memory with them? Did they know both parents?
This is where things get… complicated. Berri kind of acts like a parental figure, but aside from him, the closest thing Embla has to a parent is her adoptive mother who is not ideal. The mother is married to her job and constantly overachieves even though money is not an issue at all, so she usually leaves Embla to her own devices and has done so on a regular basis from a very young age.
Embla never met her biological parents and they are kind of an enigma. It’s hard for even me to pin them down, so let’s just say they’re kind of all over the place morally speaking
6. What were they like at school? Did they enjoy it? Did they finish? What level of higher education did they reach? What subjects did they enjoy? Which did they hate?
During the events of TFTF, Embla has just graduated 8th grade. Again, she’s not super good unfortunately. She does pick up a lot of facts and trivia, but she’s bad at contextualizing it in a lot of situations, meaning her school performance suffers. Her grades hover around Es and Ds depending on the subject, maybe a few Cs sometimes. Not sure what her fave subject is but she dislikes math and science in particular
7. Did they have lots of friends as a child? Did they keep any of their childhood friends into adulthood?
She doesn’t have a lot of friends but she likes it that way. She’s kind of a loner and people around her respect that without ignoring her (god I wish that were me). But at the beginning of TFTF, she has two close friends in Aminah and Berri, and she befriends more in the Faelands.
8. Did they have pets as a child? Do they have pets as an adult? Do they like animals?
It probably doesn’t count but with some good will, you can consider Berri to be a pet. She does like animals, dogs in particular.
9. Do animals like them? Do they get on well with animals?
It’s a 50/50 thing. Some animals like her, but some are frightened by her.
10. Do they like children? Do children like them? Do they have or want any children? What would they be like as a parent? Or as a godparent/babysitter/ect?
She’s not super fond of infants, but she definitely likes older kids and she’d probably like to have kids in the future!
12. What is their favourite food?
Okay so under normal circumstances, Embla usually eats very simple foods that somebody her age can easily cook, she is fond of anything fancy since those foods are kinda rare in her life
14. Do they have any specific memories of food/a restaurant/meal?
When Embla first met Tristan, one of the first things he did was offer her a freshly killed rabbit bc well, Tristan’s quirky like that. Embla initially declined but then reluctantly accepted the rabbit
15. Are they good at cooking? Do they enjoy it? What do others think of their cooking?
She’s decent, as I said she cooks on a regular basis. She doesn’t really cook for others, tho
18. What’s their favourite genre of: books, music, tv shows, films, video games and anything else
She likes anything that’s engaging honestly, no matter the genre
20. Do they like musicals? Music in general? What do they do when they’re favourite song comes?
If she’s in the mood, yeah? But since she’s rather stoic, she doesn’t do much more than just bob her head to a song she likes
21. Do they have a temper? Are they patient? What are they like when they do lose their temper?
She’s p patient, but if she’s pushed enough, her usual reaction involves rambling and yelling
22. What are their favourite insults to use? What do they insult people for? Or do they prefer to bitch behind someone’s back?
Embla is p feisty actually! If you annoy her or do something she doesn’t think makes sense, she will make jokes at your expense and snark at u
23. Do they have a good memory? Short term or long term? Are they good with names? Or faces?
Her memory is okay in most ways except faces, she can be awful at faces.
24. What is their sleeping pattern like? Do they snore? What do they like to sleep on? A soft or hard mattress?
She’s average I guess, she doesn’t usually remember her dreams, she doesn’t snore and she prefers soft mattresses
25. What do they find funny? Do they have a good sense of humour? Are they funny themselves?
She thinks it’s fun to make fun of ppl, not in a malicious way, but when she thinks they need to be taken down a notch. So some think her humor is a lil mean spirited
26. How do they act when they’re happy? Do they sing? Dance? Hum? Or do they hide their emotions?
She might hum sometimes, but as I said before, she’s p stoic. Not that she hides emotion, but she just doesn’t show clear signs of emotion all the time
27. What makes them sad? Do they cry regularly? Do they cry openly or hide it? What are they like they are sad?
She’ll usually just stay quiet when she’s particularily sad
28. What is their biggest fear? What in general scares them? How do they act when they’re scared?
She was initially pretty scared of the idea of going to the Faelands because yeah, her life may not be perfect, but she didn’t know what’d await her in the Faelands and she didn’t like the idea of giving up everything she’d known and stuff
She doesn’t really fear a lot after coming over it though
She gets kinda shaky and talks fast if she’s scared
29. What do they do when they find out someone else’s fear? Do they tease them? Or get very over protective?
Okay that kinda depends
Tristan is scared of corvids because valravn are a thing in the Faelands. Embla understands why somebody would be wary of murder ravens, but when Tristan’s fear gets the best of him and he jumps at the slightest sign of corvid activity with no way to prove it’s caused by valravn, Embla will tease him
30. Do they exercise? Regularly? Or only when forced? What do they act like pre-work out and post-work out?
She might take a stroll sometimes, and that’s so light of an exercise that she doesn’t have any special preparations or aftercare for it
31. Do they drink? What are they like drunk? What are they like hungover? How do they act when other people are drunk or hungover? Kind or teasing?
She’s a minor, so nah
32. What do they dress like? What sorta shops do they buy clothes from? Do they wear the fashion that they like? What do they wear to sleep? Do they wear makeup? What’s their hair like?
She wears p casual, plain clothing, usually in muted dull colors since bright colors tend to hurt her eyes.
She usually just wears her underwear to bed, she doesn’t wear makeup except on special occasions. Her hair is elbow-length and she usually doesn’t do anything special with it
33. What underwear do they wear? Boxers or briefs? Lacey? Comfy granny panties?
Lacey, most of the time. Also sport bras
34. What is their body type? How tall are they? Do they like their body?
She’s 173cm/5′8′’ and kind of average body type wise. She does have a soft tum though! Her self image fluctuates but it’s not bad, she might be a little insecure over her tum from time to time but she usually recovers quickly
36. What are they good at? What hobbies do they like? Can they sing?
She’s like. Real good physically speaking. Not that she’s athletic or anything, but in the Faelands she has to take some punches and she takes them alright, and learns to dish some out as well
Her hobbies involve the kinda stuff you’d see a contemporary teen enjoy, stuff like movies and video games, sometimes she likes casually enjoying nature.
She can sing, she’s average, she doesn’t really enjoy singing a lot.
37. Do they like to read? Are they a fast or slow reader? Do they like poetry? Fictional or non fiction?
She’s a p slow reader, and she is inclined to fictional stuff.
38. What do they admire in others? What talents do they wish they had?
She absolutely admires Aminah’s intelligence and she wishes she were closer to her level.
39. Do they like letters? Or prefer emails/messaging?
She prefers emails and IMs
40. Do they like energy drinks? Coffee? Sugary food? Or can they naturally stay awake and alert?
She’ll usually just go for a soda for her caffeine fix.
41. What’s their sexuality? What do they find attractive? Physically and mentally? What do they like/need in a relationship?
Embla is bi. She doesn’t have any real preferences physically, but she does like people with soft fluffy hair. Mentally, she’s attracted to kind, brave people, and she 100% needs a partner who makes her feel loved and cared for that poor baby girl
42. What are their goals? What would they sacrifice anything for? What is their secret ambition?
Her main goal is to find Aminah, since she’s gotten lost in the Faelands. She does get involved with helping others reach their goals too. She’s super loyal and her devotion to her friends can reach shonen protagonist levels sometimes
43. Are they religious? What do they think of religion? What do they think of religious people? What do they think of non religious people?
She’s not religious per se, and her opinions on religion boil down to “one of my best friends is a talking winged cat-dragon, this world can be so fucking weird that I can see why somebody would want to contextualize it with faith, you do you”
44. What is their favourite season? Type of weather? Are they good in the cold or the heat? What weather do they complain in the most?
She doesn’t have any strong preferences, as long as it’s not sunny she’s happy. Sunlight doesn’t hurt her per se, but she gets sunburns p easily and it can make her somewhat sluggish.
45. How do other people see them? Is it similar to how they see themselves?
People will usually see Embla as a loner, sometimes they think of her as hostile due to her wit, but she believes herself to just be an average joe
46. Do they make a good first impression? Does their first impression reflect them accurately? How do they introduce themselves?
Again, her wit might leave a bad taste in some people’s mouths, that or they might think of her as a stick in the mud. Yeah, those impressions aren’t too accurate
47. How do they act in a formal occasion? What do they think of black tie wear? Do they enjoy fancy parties and love to chit chat or loathe the whole event?
God she avoids formal stuff like the plague
48. Do they enjoy any parties? If so what kind? Do they organise the party or just turn up? How do they act? What if they didn’t want to go but were dragged along by a friend?
If she’s in the mood, yeah she might, but she’s still an introvert at heart and might just hang out on the sides with friends she already knows, and that still applies if she was forced to tag along.
50. If they could only take one bag of stuff somewhere with them: what would they pack? What do they consider their essentials?
She did this in canon! She packed clothes, basic hygiene equipment, a water bottle and a knife

Weekly review 6 -11
Week 6
Getting ready for build-
Building and putting together set
We spent a lot of time painting flats, one of the crew was in charge of counting and figuring out how many flats we needed there must have been about 30 that we painted and still it didnt add up when we put them on set. Because of how much we needed we were in everyday and Saturdays trying to paint them.
By Saturday we had ran out of the grey paint we used so i drove in my car to buy some more, i went to the same Wilko that we had brought all the paint from previously but they had ran out. I then drove my car to two more stores until i found the exact one, a lot of time had passed because i was in the city centre and there was a lot of traffic so i didn't get in to uni till 5 and stayed painting the final flats for another two hours.
After speaking with other grounds they all said how they were struggling to fill the space, so because the budget had ran over buy so much already we brought stuff in from home. I brought in stuff that i thought of for the male character, its his house so i thought it would be all his things, i brought in a trophy to represent his vanity, but it and most of the other stuff that i brought didn't get used. However i don't think it was all for nothing as i was prepared and if it was needed I had it.
When it came to buying things like flooring, paint, props, ect there was a lack of communication and the group were buying props we thought we might need, spending about £10 on stuff like this. Some of the people in the group were complaining about how the budget had been spent on pointless things and how it was entirely the fault of the unnecessary props as to why there was so much money spent on the project, this statement was made by someone looking for people to blame, however they placed the blame where they thought it would be easiest rather then looking at the actual budget and the hundreds of pounds spent in other places.
Over a few days i spent painting my picture it was delicate and had a lot of lines, we wanted art for the set and it looked very empty without any. We looked at using other people's art, but i had a piece in mind and i knew i could make it look good. Unfortunately on filming week my piece didn't make the cut, however creating the piece inspired another member to create one which was used. It was frustrating but good to know i inspired another person. There were unnecessary and unprofessional comments made by one of the members in the group who had an important roll, saying ‘guess you’re not special anymore’ which wouldn't bother me because I thought it was nice that we were all creating art but being singled out and the tone in which they said it made me feel worried about them being in charge of the project. Several more comments like this were made to other people by the same person.
The group had a big debate over the kitchen window and the colour it was going to be painted, it didn’t matter at all because it wasn't going to be filmed, I said it a few times but people needed to vent and argue so i left them to it. At no point was it filmed.
None of the floor that was brought was good enough to be used as they all looked cheap and ugly so we used the floor in the shell however there were a lot of scuffs and marks in there so we had to clean it. We used bleach and other cleaning product and got it as good as we could. It wasn't perfect but not much of it was filmed in the end.
I booked out sound equipment from hires and loans to practice with, i went around the work shop and recorded sounds i heard and played with the input, it made me feel more confident for filming week as i had never used this before.
Filming week -7
-on the previous Friday we started moving in to the shell as the other group finished early, which was good because it gave us extra time to set up. While putting up the flats I got really involved and started to nail in the skirting board all around the flat, this was a big job because there was so much to do ant the hammer was so close to the floor. When trying to pull out one of the nails i cut my finger on the back of the nail. I also fied some parts of the wall that were chipped and looked weird, so that when the appeared on camera they didn’t show up. Also there wa a chance we were filming from the outside of the living room window so i painted them white.
-putting all the props in the room, the living room was the most important and where the sofas when determined where everything went in the room. minimalism was important so we didn't actually need as much as we got, as far as props went.
- on camera the space looked bigger then it actually was, because of how it was angled.
- we strategically-placed items around the room such as the knife in the kitchen, which was one of the random items we brought with props.
-the lighting was very key and just as important as the set itself, it made everything look so much more professional. We could change it to make it look like Serbian times of the day, more of our stuff was at night so on camera it looked really convincing.
-Setting up the camera was left down to the tutor, the former student who was helping us out and one of the film and animation students, i watched a few times but if anything i just felt in the way.
-Rigging and de-rigging the set was time consuming, because we were the second group we had to change location half way though do to a booking error with the shell. Studio b was great fun to work in however because so many people wanted the room we had to be quick with the time we had there. There was a lot of pressure for the five set builders be construct the set in the short time they had. It was weird watching everything come down as well, watching all the work and vision we put in to building it and seeing it come together, then take it all apart was a weird feeling thinking all that effort.
-Moving to studio B, one of the reasons i really liked this university was because of this room, so being able to work in there was a real amazing thing. We took advantage of the green screens as well, because we had a huge window behind the bed.
The actors gave really great performances, they improvised quite a bit and used there initiative, the direction was okay, but they were very busy trying to organise other things. As the week picked up things got better, however with the bedroom scenes things where a bit unorganised and unprofessional, we attempted filming for the first time without a tutor and everyone was in the room, the actress got a bit overwhelmed because of the nature of the scenes. The next time we did this it was with a closed set so there was less of an audience and we had the tutor there which made the actress feel more comfortable. Through the weeks we were working with the actress she wasn't very reliable for being on time, I offered on filming week to pick her up early in the morning on the days she had to be in extra early so that people wouldn't worry. This changed when we realised the actress was under a lot of stress just playing the one roll so we made a decision to recast one of our own crew members to play the succubus. Our make up artist Amber stepped in and did a really good job, plums it made it easier for her to do the makeup and not have to rely on anyone else.
When filming in the kitchen our actress had to leave early so they needed someone to stand in as a shoulder while they did a close up on the male character. So I stepped in for one shot and it worked out fine as a way of resolving the problem.
We used a bunch of different camera angles for each scene so it wouldn't get boring in the film and would look more professional.
As art direction my job was to make sure there was no big things out of place and make sure things looked the way we wanted them to, which i had input where i could be, it was very busy and everyone wanted there say.
The scene with the wine was a big part of the whole thing and we had to get it right first time because of the budget, the actress was quite nervous as she didn't want to get it wrong in one take, but she did really well and it looked great.
There was a lot of pressure on the week so I was trying to keep calm and not take anything to heart because I knew it wasn't personal, it did cause a lot of arguments along the way but we tried to move past them fast so we didn't waist time.
We finished filming on the Friday evening and it was such a relief that it was all over, i think everyone felt really proud in the end, and we began de rigging and went home happy for the weekend.
Week 8
editing and sound the groups where picked by the directors as to who went in which group, we didn't have a big group to work with but we tried our best. Between me and another girl in the group we were the main people working on sound and we tried our best.
We put out an add for musicians from the conservatoire to come and help and we got a rely ver fast from a trombone player to come help us.
Coming up with ideas we were thinking orchestral and religious because of the scene with the male character posing as Jesus at the end.
We began recreating all the sound for the foley and realised there was so much and it was very time consuming.
Week 9
We met Tom who was going to help us out with the sound and we told him what we wanted to focus on and we looked at a bunch of ideas then he began to use his instrument to create music and re recorded some of it, we gave him some more ideas and he went away to think about what we wanted. Gyorgy Ligeti : "Requiem" from the original "2001" Was the song we were looking at.
We showed what we were thinking to the other group and they gave us new ideas, they didnt like the orchestral sound and preferred a more modern sound more industrial.
We continued making the foley sounds, the rest of the group wanted the sound to be quicker but with out the finished footage it was hard for us to get the sound to match. We asked the technician for advice and he thought that we needed the footage quicker then when we were going to get it.
Week 10
changing type of sound, on Monday we made a start on the new choice for the sound, Tom had been thinking about all this orchestral stuff and we had changed our mind on what we wanted. It still sounded quite orchestral though and when he came back on Friday we invited everyone in and changed it even more as well all go to work on it together, Tom helped us create this fantastic piece that everyone enjoyed in the end.
We invited the other part of the group in to help so that we could find a sound that suited us all rather then traveling back and forth, we were more free as they had finished the edit on Friday.
Most of the foley had come together as well and we had covered all the sounds we needed.
We had fun creating the music there were only a few issues that they wanted to change. More impact at the points needed but it was so good to see everyone on the same page.
Working with musician was definitely worth it, they were on their masters degree so that had a lot of experience with music. They were interested in movie music as well and had a lot of good suggestions, they were able to use a synthesisers which became the main instrument we used. I think we learned a lot off of him and made a contact that could help in the future.
Week 11
The snow made everything very difficult this week, I couldn't leave the house on Monday, by Tuesday, my trains still weren't running.
They were finishing of the final edit though Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday which gave us a bit of extra time to sort things out and add bits and pieces and match things up to the sound. Because I wasn't there to see it, one of the other girls on the team stepped forward and finished of tweaking the sound. It was pretty much finished on Friday there were just a few things that we'd found out we missed.
There was a whole day spent Colour grading with our tutor Matt, in which he did all the technical stuff, recolouring the shot and doing all the green screen stuff so it was all sorted out, i am yet to see the final outcome but hoping it will look really great.
I finished off all my work and put it on a blog i thought it would be easier and cheaper then printing everything off and putting it in a sketch book. I made a sketch book still for all the stuff that couldn't be explained in a picture, like all the textured stuff that i painted and all the mixed media stuff i created.

Staymancy! 1- 10 and 16 - 21!
!!!! my lovely mothy!!!!! here ya go!!! under the cut!
1. What’s their full name? Why was that chosen? Does it mean anything?
Isla Browning, there’s not much thought in her name other than it sounds like it’s... Her.
2. Do they have any titles? How did they get them?
Her hero name is The Evacuation Heroine: Staymancy. Her quirk freezes people and puts them into suspended animation, meaning she’s the perfect hero for medical evac. She can just poof someone and suddenly while they’re still in critical condition, they’re not going to change. She can make someone freeze bleeding out until they can get someone they can be bandaged up.
3. Did they have a good childhood? What are fond memories they have of it? What’s a bad memory?
I???? Haven’t put much thought into Isla’s childhood. She’s actually in her fifties so she’s pretty middle aged. She just Seems young because her quirk has a subtle effect on herself.
A fond memory in her childhood would have to be of the first time she ever used her quirk to help keep someone from getting hurt any further before getting the help they needed. (As illegal the quirk use was, she wasn’t punished for it)
She has a lot of bad memories of her quirk hitting unsuspecting peers because she couldn’t control it. It’s rather terrifying when people start falling stiff to the ground around you.
4. What is their relationship with their parents? What’s a good and bad memory with them? Did they know both parents?
Isla knows both her parents! Her father is a stag beetle looking mutation (he looks like a Heracross) with super strength as a quirk, her mother can freeze someone in time for two minutes max. Her mother was also in the medical field because of her quirk. She grew up knowing she wanted to be a doctor of some kind to help people just like her mom!
Her parents and her had a perfectly fine relationship, though they’re really old by current time and in care homes. I’d like to say she has an older brother and a younger sister but idk anything about them yet lmao
5. Do they have any siblings? What’s their names? What is their relationship with them? Has their relationship changed since they were kids to adults?
Older brother and her don’t get along, she and her younger sister are best friends. Bro and her bonded a little more as they grew older but her and sister have somewhat drifted. Doesn’t help that Isla quit the medical field to pursue medical rescue in the Hero career. Her siblings didn’t really support that.
6. What were they like at school? Did they enjoy it? Did they finish? What level of higher education did they reach? What subjects did they enjoy? Which did they hate?
Isla was very good in school! She had to be to go through all the years of medical school to become a paramedic. She hated classes involving speech because her speech impediment. It’s hard to speak clearly when you have a permanent lisp because your proboscis just doesn’t fit in your mouth. And not every teacher let her get away with using sign language. She BARELY passed them.
She didn’t much otherwise ENJOY her classes per so, mostly seeing them as the avenue she had to take to pursue her dream of saving people
7. Did they have lots of friends as a child? Did they keep any of their childhood friends into adulthood?
Isla had several close friends yes! She’s a very friendly and cheerful person. She has a few she calls up or video calls every now and then, but she’s been a bit far from them ever since she moved to Japan to pursue a hero career.
Also, her friends constantly give her shit for looking so young even though she’s so old, lmao
8. Did they have pets as a child? Do they have pets as an adult? Do they like animals?
Isla was the sort to get a million of those butterfly growing kits and then releasing them in her backyard. She LOVES butterflies and moths and most flying bugs. She keeps a lot of flowering plants and pollinator attracting plants around the house to help bring them in.
Her parents tried getting her a pet once, but her praying mantis died due to reasons and she was so heartbroken they refused to get her another and she was Not against it.
9. Do animals like them? Do they get on well with animals?
Most animals with noses sneeze too much around her to like her very much
10. Do they like children? Do children like them? Do they have or want any children? What would they be like as a parent? Or as a godparent/babysitter/ect?
Kids are either weirded out by Isla or LOVE her, she has a WONDERFUL bedside manner and is great at comforting or getting along with kids. Isla would be a WONDERFUL mum and would love to have kids but she’s a huge ass lesbian and isn’t interested in biological kids of her own, so she’s gonna have to get a gorlfriend with kids already lmao
She ends up making a wonderful stepmom! She loves kids so much when they’re not scared of her
16. Do they collect anything? What do they do with it? Where do they keep it?
Isla doesn’t really collect anything except friends and smile lines
17. Do they like to take photos? What do they like to take photos of? Selfies? What do they do with their photos?
Ohhhh so many selfies and so many pictures of her and friends hanging out. There’s usually weird halos and light effects around her because of dust. She loves her Instagram and when she becomes a hero she’s social media savvy enough to really rock it!
18. What’s their favourite genre of: books, music, tv shows, films, video games and anything else
She likes Discovery Channel and dramas. She will sit and gasp and fan and coo over a drama like a lil drama queen. She cries over romantic movies. Isn’t one much for games because she’s got four hands and what’s she supposed to do with one pair while playing with the other?
19. What’s their least favourite genres?
She dislikes horror movies, for no particular reason. HATES inaccurate hospital shows
20. Do they like musicals? Music in general? What do they do when they’re favourite song comes?
She likes music! Definitely a dancer, loves flailing about and bouncing around. She’s very careful with her dust so she doesn’t usually actually dance in public for risk of dropping some. She’s not very good at singing though
21. Do they have a temper? Are they patient? What are they like when they do lose their temper?
She’s very patient and cool headed, you’ll never see Isla lose her temper unless the world has gone to shit.
