✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧ Modern AU YouTuber BloodWeave ✧₊⁺⋆☾⋆.˚₊✩
Me: Wouldn't it be funny if Mystra (under the alias "LadyOfMysteries") is on all the Gale Discords and reblogs horny Gale content on her Tumblr. @astraliaa & @bluebeebalmwrites: *proceed to create an entire nuanced YouTuber BloodWeave modern AU narrative over the course of the next hour* ~ I had to write it. ~ Astarion lies in the dark of his room, the only light the artificial glow of his phone, illuminating his face. His eyes narrow as he taps ‘play’.
“Hello again!” A tinny, almost muffled voice rings out cheerily. The man on the screen is about the same age as Astarion, perhaps a little older. He has long-ish brown hair scruffily tied back in a half bun, stubble, and large, tortoiseshell glasses. He's wearing the most heinous purple fleece. From what Astarion can see behind the man, he looks to be sitting in a fairly cluttered kitchen.
Astarion skips ahead in the video. Ten minutes in — ten minutes — the man says, “Anyhow, back to today’s Five Things About Magic video! This time, I’m going to look at five spells absolutely anyone can master. Even you!” The man points into the camera in a way that makes Astarion want to die.
“First up, we’ve got a really easy one. This is a very handy little cantrip for lighting candles, getting the hob going, seeing in the dark, and so on. Obviously, at higher levels, it gets a bit more dangerous but we don’t need to worry about that just yet. Okay, here it is.” The man tilts his chin down, smiling into the camera before flicking his fingers at a candle on the table in front of him. “Ignis.”
The wick flares into life and the man winks. “See? Simple. And very manageable for anyone to get to grips with, even your granny who always regretted never learning magic will be able to grasp this one!”
Fire bolt is the only cantrip Astarion can do. Grimacing, he skips ahead again. The whole thing is about 45 minutes long. At one point, the entire screen goes blank as the wizard’s phone falls flat without him realizing. The video ends as he’s halfway through rounding up the information for the sixth cantrip on his list. In his Five Things video. Astarion doesn’t know why, but this grates on him even more than the hideous picture quality.
As he always does, Astarion tortures himself by obsessively refreshing the page, watching the likes go up exponentially. The wizard only just posted the video — at 1am on a weekday ffs — and the likes are already in the thousands. Astarion knows that, by this time tomorrow, they'll be in the millions.
He scrolls down and flicks through the comments, just to fuel the acidic rage in his chest.
GalesGal: Tysm professor! Amazing lesson as always! <3
WhatsMyMageAgain: can’t wait to start trying these, thx for making magic so accessible
LadyOfMysteries: Looking good as always professor! ;) <3
He gets through hundreds of comments before he can find a single negative one.
Popper78656: yeh ‘free magic for the ppl’ but still happy to monetize Ur content aren't you. Hipocrit
Astarion feels a pleasant little twist of schadenfreude and taps on the replies.
WizardOfWaterdeep: Hi there! Many thanks for your comment! Yes, this channel is monetized but all proceeds go to the Mites of Mystra charity, which helps bring magic tuition to disadvantaged kids. Thanks for your donation :)
Astarion's lip curls. This. Fucking. Guy.
A notification distracts him and he opens the latest video on his own channel, a timelapse of the gorgeous gown he created for a drag friend. Weeks of work. He still feels proud watching it.
There's a new comment.
Yolohump: love this! Sent you a DM, possible opportunity
Heart fluttering with excitement, Astarion taps on his messages.
Yolohump: u r SEW beautiful ;) wanna f**k?
Astarion lets out a groan and throws his phone across the room, burying his head in his pillow.

making my way back.
Tumblr media
On a rainy January evening at beginning of this year, 2023, I drove downtown after work to meet up with a friend. Our goal: plein air painting. It was the first time I had done that in a long, long time.
I used to do that kind of thing pretty frequently. In years past, I would venture out with a sketchbook, a watercolor palette, and a friend to create some slice-of-life art while catching up over sandwiches or lemonade. I maintained a small collection of fountain pens that saw regular cleanings and refills. I had a library of pocket-size sketchbooks that I decorated with stickers or random adhesive labels. I started a YouTube channel to post timelapse videos of the process. I participated in a few art exhibits and sold some original pieces. And I dreamed taking trips to unfamiliar cities, sketchbooks in hand, to produce a new batch of paintings to sell, gift, or hang on the wall.
I never quite achieved a level of skill and ability that I was satisfied with, but urban sketching and painting gave me an exciting way to experience the world; it gave me a chance to practice being present; it gave me a way to never feel bored while waiting in line.
Tumblr media
There's this weird thing that happens in life when you get disconnected from something you love. It doesn't happen all at once. But I started feeling it, here and there. I noticed it when I would page through my sketchbooks and find them unfinished, with the last sketch dated months or years in the past. I noticed it when I picked up my fountain pens and found them all dried out, unable to produce a line. I noticed that my brain preferred the constant dopamine hits of social media rather than the slow, methodical process of making art.
It's sad, isn't it? You make all this progress and gain all this momentum, and then you slowly start losing it until you don't even recognize who you used to be. Maybe it was the plague of 2020 that shut down my travel habit; maybe it was two years of working from home that got me too accustomed to my own space, and less interested in wandering through cities with a bag full of art supplies. Maybe it was moving into a house and needing to focus on renovations and maintenance. Sure, I had a good time exploring some other areas of life during that time. But I felt like I had lost part of myself.
~
A few years ago I read through Neil Gaiman's The Sandman: Preludes & Nocturnes. It's a haunting and often disturbing tale with no shortage of thought-provoking scenes to dig into, but there's one aspect of the story that was particularly meaningful to me.
Tumblr media
When Dream is released from his decades-spanning captivity, he quickly sets out on a quest to retrieve his totems of power. He needs his pouch of sand, his helm, and his ruby, each of which have been scattered across existence and have fallen into the wrong hands. And every time Dream gets one back, he regains some of the strength that he used to possess. He becomes a little more of himself.
Tumblr media
Maybe it's silly, but that's kind of how I feel when I refill the fountain pens and clean off the watercolor palette. That's how I feel when I sort through a box that's been cluttering up my space and discover some old art supplies I forgot I owned. And that's how I feel when, despite all the frustration in the process of "knocking the rust off," I find my way back into plein air painting and get one that I'm really happy with. It feels like I'm getting a part of myself back.
Tumblr media
(I may not teleport between planes of existence or do battle with mind-controlling weirdos, but, you know. Let's not take the metaphor too far.)
I didn't end up particularly happy with my painting of the Goshen Theater. I found myself struggling with the same artistic challenges that I had struggled with in years past, when I was last doing this regularly--lines that aren't clear enough, watercolor mixes that aren't strong enough, the lurking worry that I don't really know what I'm doing. But I was back out there. I was back on the street with a sketchbook in my hand, catching up with my friend as she worked on an acrylic painting of the same scene, chatting it up with pedestrians who wanted to take a look at the art in progress.
And as such, I think I reconnected with a part of myself that had been asleep for a while.
I hope to continue. I hope to keep painting this spring and summer as I work my way back into the habit. I hope to apply for a couple of art shows this year, and I hope to have created enough paintings throughout the summer that I actually have some pieces to show. And I hope to keep writing about my paintings here, as a way to think through the process of what I'm doing and learn something about myself on the way.
Thanks for reading. I'm new here, but it's good to be back.

TailQuest demo is now available! Great tower defense for everyone.
We've been game developers for many years... Wait, let me check? Yes. For 13 years. We were both students when we met. Despite the great distance, we were connected by love for free and open source software, games, books and for each other.
Tumblr media
This love has spawned several games already, and now you can check out our newest and biggest game: TailQuest! You can check out our game on  Steam and itch.io . In the demo version you will find as many as 7 secrets, many interesting mechanics and a level built especially for the demo version. You won't find this in the full game!
Tumblr media
While creating our game we used (of course) the linux system and the Godot Engine. Our other tools include Blender, Inkscape, Gimp, Audacity, kdenlive and Substance 3D. If you like timelapse videos that show the process of creating a game - you should definitely check out our youtube channel. Beautiful music for our game was created by our friend Wojciech Usarzewicz whose other songs you can find here: Soundcloud.com
Wish us good luck and we wish you a lot of fun!

I’ve been watching a huge variety of other mcyt creators lately (people that I had never heard of until I just started a deep dive down the rabbit hole), in order to more or less get a feel for where the community is today in terms of culture outside of the HC/Empires/Legacy/DSMP/their respective spinoffs group we tend to fixate on. These will be herefore referred to as our spotlight series.
I started this post just intending to make a joke about how excited I get whenever I see someone use a clip of a Hermit in their video as an example or a reaction (I’ve seen Gemini’s building timelapse from god-knows-when and about two frames of S7 Keralis from a TikTok so far) but I suppose I may as well present my findings because as always, I’ve taken notes.
I took a group of creators at complete random from the Minecraft topic page and a deep dive down the related algorithm. This is by no means a perfectly random sample of the community, but I feel it is a good show of what the YouTube algorithm is choosing to show a random viewer (I did clear all cookies and my watch history for that profile before I started). In total, my analysis includes a group of ~50 creators ranging from 10K to 3M subscribers; In order to keep track, I did subscribe to all of them. RIP my sub feed that I definitely don’t ever use anyway.
Here’s What I Found.
Demographics. While the spotlight series seem to have made large strides in the progress of inclusivity in the past few years, I’m saddened to report that the greater community does not appear to follow this trend. Every creator in my sample group was a man, and with the exception of one that I know to be black and a small handful that I suspect may be of Asian identities a very large majority are clearly white. They also all appeared to be between the ages of 15 and 30, but this is expected of people getting their start in mcyt within the last few years. A large majority contained sponsorships.
Content. Because I didn’t go in with the intention of doing a deep dive analysis but just out of my own curiosity, I had few expectations regarding what kind of content these creators would be putting out. And while there were certainly some obvious correlations and trends, I was impressed by the range that I saw. By far the biggest genres were mod videos and 100 days challenges, usually combined and always in hardcore mode. I know this to be the biggest trend on the platform right now so it wasn’t by any means surprising-just a data point. Other prevalent types included informational videos (have been around forever and are still relevant) reaction videos (ranging from cute to nostalgic to pure secondhand embarrassment fuel) some variation on Manhunt (not near as common as you would think) and a genre I like to call spotlight analysis (commentaries on any of the spotlight series, explaining or analyzing them in various levels of detail). Mr. Beast gets his own category, since he showed up just enough toward the end that I was concerned he would ruin my data. I also stumbled across two full-fledged SMPs for which I found multiple creators. One was an anarchy server called the LifeSteal SMP that is pretty much what exactly what the name implies and looked like fun, but was brought to its knees by cheaters and shady admins. The other was an idyllic society that I don’t believe actually has a name, characterized by big, beautiful builds (the pirate ship was particularly gorgeous) and harmless prankage.
Quality. I was seriously impressed by the video production quality of some of the smaller channels. Many of the 100 days challenges had thoroughly crafted lore behind them, voice acting, replay mod timelapses and cinematic shots. I would consider a large majority of the videos well-edited, the audio quality overall was clear and professional—these people clearly take pride in their work. There were a few glaring traits, however, that separate them from what I feel set the spotlight series apart. 100%, and I mean 100%, of the videos were voiceovers. Zero live commentary. I have no idea why this is the popular stylistic choice—I would guess it has something to do with the 100 days challenges—but I will emphasize that it does not work for every video format. It causes the second issue I found: scripted voiceovers. If you’re reading from a script, it sounds like you’re reading from a a script. Sometimes this works. Most of the time it becomes a monotone news report that can be hard to watch.
In conclusion, I’ve found that the greater mcyt community is thriving just as much as it was ten years ago albeit differently. There are some trends that will never go away, some creators whose legacies will never die. I do think there is room for improvement and variety, but I don’t think it’s fair to reduce smaller creators to teenaged dsmp copycats. It’s worth branching out and looking for something new. It’s also worth creating it yourself.
Go forth, my dear time travelers, and find something new.
[drops mic] Wynnie out.

long-form artisan filmography seems to be very much in vogue on youtube rn, for example potters such as Florian Gadsby or painting restorationists like Julin Braumgartner, and in general I think that's a good thing. It's imperative that people have a chance to witness art being made so that they can decide if that's something they want to pursue for themselves, and given the state of internet video media I think few would disagree that educational content is a much needed virtue. However, I fear that at some level this type of media may, for the consumer, vicariously fulfill the need to actually produce art in the same way it's been written about how capitalist 'rebellion' film preforms revolutionary for us, negating the drive to act irl. This is probably overly pedantic though, the real enemy is 30 second timelapse tiktok videos with negative educational value, and anything without commentary that's purely a montage of aesthetics.

I really want to do your DTIYS but I can't draw full body gestures for the life of me T_T. I somehow drew Alya but am struggling with Marinette. Could you give any tips for drawing fluid postures🤧?
oh i get it for sure! i've struggled for a LONG time with making my poses more dynamic, i'm not the best teacher but heres some things that might be helpful:
• When sketching a pose, stay zoomed out, so you can get a better picture of how fluid it is altogether- u could draw a super dynamic hand that looks awkward with the rest of the body, u know?
• References are your best friend, i personally love getty images bc they just have random stock photos of like...everything? for action poses, gymnasts and trapeze artists make thE BEST references, especially for superheroes
•I don't know your skill level but if you're new to working from reference or just newer at drawing full body in general, theres nothing wrong with doing a tiny bit of tracing, and I don't mean the whole thing because you probably won't learn that way. The tracing i'm talking about is drawing a couple guide lines over the reference image, and then using them lines as your base for the drawing. (I'm bad at words but i included a timelapse example below, its not the best example because i rushed it just now so i could put it in this answer so its not a very accurate study LOL but...you get the idea), it'll help you follow the reference without the daunting blank canvas, u know?
• try not to use too many straight lines, they aren't very fluid and they're quite rare in nature (i think?), man made things are often more straight but nature has a lot of curves, including humans!
• this is a smaller tip but one of my fav things to do is make the tilt of the head exactly opposite to the tilt of the shoulders, it looks soooooo good. it works with other things too, like...hips and shoulders, direction of clothing, hair etc...its hard to explain but i included another example below...just swapping it up a lot looks nice i think :3
Tumblr media
thats all i can think of from me directly, however one of my favourite artists literally JUST uploaded a youtube video about dynamic poses so i recommend checking him out, heres the video, i recommend his other videos too though bc he has helped me sooo much and he's a very skilled teacher imo ^_^
i hope this was helpful, &im so happy you're entering aaaaa, im excited to see how your art turns out ;w;

RFA + V + Saeran with a s/o that goes to protests
As I mentioned before, I’m from Perú. We’ve had several marches in the past few years because we’ve reached levels of corruption that are just nauseating. I’ve attended most of them and have been tear-gassed, chased by policemen riding horses and pushed around in return. One of the things that made me really sad was that two of my boyfriends were opposed to me going to the streets and claiming justice for my country.
So, did I write these headcanons just because I was salty all my ex-boyfriends hated when I attended protests about important matters in my country? Yes
Was that one of the reasons I broke up with them? Maybe
Should you stop going to protests or marches just because your s/o doesn’t like it? ABSOLUTELY NOT
Anyway, have these perfect boys/girl being supportive.
a/n: These headcanons are not set on a particular movement, but are rather about protests about unjust systems in general.
Tumblr media
Yoosung
Is he scared? Yes
Is he still going no matter what? YOU BET HE IS
You may think he’s just going with you because he’s your boyfriend but he does care about the injustice you’re both protesting about
Also, I’ll never stop saying this: Yoosung is brave. He may be scared sometimes but true courage is doing what you have to do despite of that fear
So he’ll hold your hand through it, even help you make some signs.
He’ll help other people if they get hurt during the protest
Just an angel
Tumblr media
Zen
Zen wasn’t so keen on the idea at first, not gonna lie.
But after he took some time to educate himself and realized it was a bigger issue, you bet he’s on it
He’ll use his platform on social media to educate his fans, and even do one or two videos about the matter. In case donations are needed, he’ll also share links where they can donate and will donate some money of his own.
He’ll be a little scared about attending protests (mainly because he’s worried about his face getting hurt --it’s not about his narcissism anymore but he’s still an actor) but there’s nothing that will stop him from protecting his princess
Zen will be right by your side the whole time, using his height to check your surrounding in case you need to find a safe space
Tumblr media
Jaehee
Sadly, it’s not like she had a choice to attend or not. Most of the protests occur during working hours and she couldn’t find the time.
But she will be really supportive of it! She doesn’t use social media that much but will try and share information to her contacts about it.
She will also spread the word at work hehe
In case donations are needed, she would make a donation as well, making use of her savings since working at.
You think that was it? HA! drumrolls pleaaaase~
You are seriously misled if you don’t think Jaehee got in touch with other idols club presidents and joined forces to protest their own way by, for example, crashing the police app, reserving Trump rally tickets and not going, and more.
She’ll use any power she has to help out. Once you get home from the protests, please give her a call so she can make sure you’re okay, though.
Tumblr media
Jumin
Depending on the motive of the protests, he will go through the list of businesses he’s previously partnered with and give them a call, giving them a timelapse to issue a statement supporting the cause. If it’s a corruption case, he will end the partnership, that’s all.
You may think Jumin wouldn’t be caught dead in a protest
But you’d be wrong
He may have brought his bodyguards to keep an eye on both you and him, but he’s there. There’s no way in hell he’d let you go on your own.
You managed to get him to wear a hoodie and more comfortable clothes instead of his classic three-piece suit. He wasn’t keen on the idea but understood they would be better in case of an emergency.
If donations are needed, he’ll make a massive donation in C&R’s name. And a slighter smaller one in your name.
If he’s not familiar with the issue in hand, he will ask to be educated. This man reads a lot and if you don’t have the time or energy to explain, he will find resources on his own and read. He will interview people. By the end of the day, he could give lectures about the subject (but he won’t---- that would be against the whole thing on being educated lol).
Tumblr media
Saeyoung
You need a website going down? You got it, babe.
It doesn’t matter if it’s the police, a bad company or even a government page. If you wanted to make a statement, he would make sure the page went down.
If he’s still working as an agent, he will have to wear a face mask and a hoddie to avoid being recognized at a protest, but you bet he would be there. If he’s loaded with work and can’t possibly make it, he will keep an eye of you through CCTV. Although, all recordings of people protesting will magically disappear afterwards oooops.
His main focus would be the informatics part, though. So feed him as many ideas as you can, he will try his best to be your partner in crime and take down whatever entity is being unjust.
He may not be the tallest of the bulkier but he does have secret agent training so in case you are chased by the police he will be your best chance on escaping them successfully.
Tumblr media
V / Jihyun
Jihyun is calm and loving but he’s also brave when it comes to protecting someone he loves.
So, he will be there with you during protests, holding your hand with you both chant against the injustice the protest is about.
He will help you raise funds if they are needed! He will sell several of his photos and have all money sent where it’s needed the most
Jihyun is a sensible guy, he will understand the reason why everyone is so angry and hungry for justice. So when you feel drained and just sad about everything that’s going through, he’ll sit you down on his lap and hug you, reassuring you the work you’re doing is important and that things are changing because of it, so you should feel proud.
Tumblr media
Saeran
Saeran will also help with any hacking or coding you may need.
He’s a little more sensitive about injustice because he’s felt similarly since he was young. So, even if he’s still a little iffy about hacking again, he will use all his abilities for the greater good.
Will watch YouTube videos or read books to educate himself. There’s so much of the world he’s missed he may not understand some social issues at first, but after he’s read, he’s ready to put on his sneakers and take the streets.
You both end up setting a small station on the side of the road to help people who were injured in the protests. You also give out water to whoever needs to.
It’s been a while since you’ve seen him with a mask on, but his now red hair and kind eyes make you remember how far he’s come and how he’s willing to help anyone who needs it.
.❀。• *₊°。 ❀°。 .❀。• *₊°。 ❀°。 .❀。• *₊°。 ❀°。 .❀。• *₊°。
a/n: Right now in Perú, there are clinics charging you S/.165 ($ 47.69) for medicine that usually costs S/.1 ($ 0.28). I’m not saying we should go out and protest right now because our healthcare system has officially collapsed, but please, don’t forget this. Don’t forget the clinic names. Don’t forget we’re living the consequences of decades of corruption our parents lived through in silence because the other choice was being called terrorists and going to jail without a proper trial. We’ll get through this. But we must not forget.

So um, hi. I'm sorry to bother you. I asked this before on one of your paintings. I dont know if you'll see this. Do you have any tutorials on how you render? Your work is truly amazing!❤❤❤
Hi! You’re not bothering me at all. :D I saw your comment but I’ll reply here since there’s more space.
First of all, I’m honored! <3 Second, I do not have tutorials, but I do have some timelapse videos on YouTube if that might help explain how I draw/paint? I also stream on Twitch sometimes, though not usually when I’m doing TCW stuff (I get very few viewers then, so don’t want to waste bandwidth).
My overall process is straightforward, I guess? I use Corel Painter, which is software specifically designed to mimic natural media, so it has lots of really good brushes, paper textures that you can play with, etc.
(Gonna put this under a cut because I’m a rambling fool and this got long)
Anyway, I start with a rough sketch and once I’m satisfied with it I draw a clean layer over that, either in pencil or ink. I often find things I need to fix at this stage, so make adjustments as necessary.
Once I’ve got the lines finished, I start painting. I do all my painting on the background layer, unless there’s some kind of layering effect I need, like the stars I did for the Codywan image (I had to figure out how to make those from scratch but it was really fun!). Mostly I don’t use a lot of layers because Painter kind of sucks at them, haha. I think because of how all the textures, brushes, and colors interact in that program, having multiple layers of color is generally a headache.
I start out with the scratchboard tool, which basically makes really sharp, crisp lines, on a really large setting and roughly block in colors and shadows, etc. At this point I stay zoomed out - usually around 50% - so that I can see how everything is working together. I refine a bit as needed, then when I’m happy with that I use the grainy water tool to blend everything. I swear, this brush is a miracle worker, haha! So after a blending pass, then I zoom in to 150 or 200% and start refining all the details and edges with the round camelhair brush, which is classified as an oil brush in Painter, and adjusting colors as necessary.
I also generally start from the background and do all the stuff that’s not the figures first (the Codywan image is an exception, because I felt like I needed to get the campfire worked out before I could start coloring the surroundings and figures). That way I don’t have to try and paint a rough or blurry background behind a really refined, detailed face or something, and have to repaint all the edges.
Once I’ve got all the painting done, I pop over to Photoshop to adjust levels and add some shadows or highlights in a few key spots, then slap on a bunch of textures with layer mask tool. I have folders and folders of textures - things like rusty metal, wood grain, fabric, rocks, etc. The textures help the image not look so plasticy, which is something I hate about my own stuff.
Sorry that got so long! I’ve been using this basic process for so many years that I forgot how many steps there are, haha!
I hope this was helpful in some way, and thank you again for the kind words! :)

First Impressions
Tumblr media
Honestly, if you're following this blog, there's a good chance you found it through @analog-machine so you know what all to expect if you are.
My name's Ice, I'm a "they", alladat...
First thing's first;
I don't know what you're expecting, but let me tell you this much: I'm not really an artist of any standing, and I acknowledge this fact. I draw/paint/whatever because I like it, not necessarily because it's "good" so use your imagination there. It's a hobby, that's all.
Even still, stealing/using my stuff without permission isn't cool. If I notice it's being done, that my stuff's being reposted and not reblogged, I'm going to replace everything with the garishly watermarked versions.
Second;
I plan on still posting my art stuff to my main but I figured this'd be a better way of keeping up with what's been posted here/easily finding whatever I've drawn for whatever reasons? Since my main blog is a blackhole of bullshit.
Third;
I don't know how to tell y'all this, but my anon asks for this blog are off, and I think submissions are, too. That's because if you're gonna request something, I'm gonna need to be able to sort out who's doing the requesting and not be reduced to "Anon546" or some shit.
Not that you would request something, but you could and I would like to be able to keep up with shit easily.
Fourth;
If you are following from my main, then you know what kind of thing's gonna happen if I try to draw sentient beings. It's not necessarily bad but holy fricking shit is it not "good" on any level.
Fifth;
Try not to expect too much fandom stuff. Feel free to ask if you think you've spotted some, ofc, but don't be disappointed if the answer is "no".
Sixth;
On that note, please expect to be asked about whatever you're asking about, because if I don't know what you're talking about, I'd probably very much like to.
Seventh/Final;
Please be aware that I intend to keep this a relatively PG-ish space. Granted, my language alone is enough to get a mature rating in most fields, but I don't do lewd and I don't often do gore art.
If you feel you want to see something gory in my style, I'll work out a way of sending it directly to ya.

hello pals
i realise telling people on tumblr how to kill time on the internet is probably redundant but just in case you’re looking for some new youtube rabbitholes, voila:
Soothing
Uri Tuchman - engraving/woodworking/metalworking on increasingly eccentric projects e.g. a tiny automaton of himself with a hammer and chisel, an ‘ink dipping machine’ with a lobster claw holding the pen, etc. A charming weirdo, 10-20 min videos
Frank Howarth - some Big Dad Energy here, woodworking wholesome projects like a wooden Death Star or a big wooden foot for making prints at the beach, sometimes throws in stop-motion or timelapse footage with a self-deprecating chuckle, 10-20 min videos
Liziqi - apparently everyone knows about Liziqi but I didn’t, and then I watched her singlehandedly make a furniture set out of bamboo and was like yeah cool OK, a variety of food/craft videos set in an unbelievably idyllic mountainous backdrop, 5-10 min videos
Primitive Technology - dude goes into the bush with nothing but an Australian level of tenacity and sole durability, makes huts and tools and doesn’t say a single word the entire time, 5-15 min videos
Baumgartner Restoration - restoration of old or damaged paintings, with or without narration, newer episodes 20-40 mins
Funny
UNHhhh - two drag queens of varying levels of nutso who just want to make each other laugh, NSFW in most conceivable ways with odd flashes of genius and just a lot to take in visually, 100+ 10ish min videos
Monster Factory - if you haven’t already, two brothers use the character creation functions of video games to make abominations unto the Lord, fall in love with their precious children, wreak havoc on perfectly reasonable video games just tryna live their lives, 50+ 30 min videos
Nuzelocke Run - if you liked the one brother from Monster Factory, here’s more! Griffin plays Pokemon with a bunch of weird rules, essentially a love story between Griffin and his evolving troupe of pokemon he bonds with and then has to keep from dying, you’ll laugh you’ll cry etc. 20 min videos
Heartwarming/Misc
Flatbush Cats - soft outdoor-cat rescue videos with a distinctly hipster HONY aesthetic, see cat get clean and floofy! 5-10 min videos
kiwami japan - making knives out of things that knives shouldn’t be made out of, will make you feel feelings you have never felt before, just a real weird time, 10-20 min videos
Rachel Maksy - just a really sweet lady who likes vintage clothes? she has a dog called Frodo and it’s very good.
Bon Appetit - again, everyone knows about Bon Appetit now but I love so much of it. Gourmet Makes follows a highly skilled baker in her Sisyphean attempts to remake popular junk foods, watch someone try things and fail and try them again and make adjustments and get support from friends, HEARTWARMING LIFE LESSONS. It’s Alive in which an anthropomorphised golden retriever teaches you to make fermented foods while being constantly read to filth by his editing team. And a newer contender Reverse Engineering sees my secret favourite Chris Morocco remake dishes he has only been able to taste, stymied by his nemesis Various Cheeses. I personally find all of these soothing and funny as well. A gift to us all.

even youtubers have become bored with the oversharing
Five or so years go, ‘daily vlogging’ was considered a dream career for so many. If there was a bumper sticker, it would say: look kids! You can live your everyday life as normal, and get paid for it! In 2017, 75% of kids said there top choice would be having a career in producing online videos. 24% said the reason being was because of the creativity and freedom: “you get to make cool videos and content” and 11% said it was for the fame. Both tick-boxes are pretty surface-level without much information given of what the job really entails. It ‘looks’ fun. Just like most Instagram feeds that has an #ad thrown in somewhere. Even if you said your dream was to be a footballer, you might have an idea of how many hours you’d work, how often you’d be expected to train, what your contract might look like. But with a ‘cool’ job like being a daily vlogger there is no one-size fits all, or breakdown of what goes on behind the scenes. Not really. Until now that is. In a recent video called ‘The Truth About Dating A Vlogger’ starring Zoe Sugg, Alfie Deyes, Raya Encheva and Louis Cole, the two couples get real about how social media and in particular videoing their lives every single day had on them. It’s a brave and honest video, but it also feels like it’s only now — now that they are on the other side of it having quit — that can they fully expose the ugly side. Both have stopped daily vlogging, Alfie because it meant he had no time for other projects, also stressing that he now makes less money and Louis because he started getting ill from the stress. For their younger viewers especially its feels timely and important, and quite frankly, the responsible thing to do. It’s just the guys, Alfie and Louis, who used to do the tiring task of vlogging every single day. Their girlfriends Zoe and Raya explain just how much it affected their relationships, from forcing them to be in the background of a video when they were having an off day, to adding a timelapse filter to a video during an argument so they would still have something to upload even though they didn’t want to share the argument, to that one time Louis took Raya on a romantic getaway to the Maldives but asked to first ‘pretend’ to have dinner for the sake of the drone and the ‘content’, before actually switching off for a second and having a real meal together. Raya looked visibly pissed off while Louis jokingly tells the story. Zoe explains that for 30 days of the year, at Christmas, they would both daily vlog and during this time they would constantly argue. They would even fit over who would put their content first and get the views. Alfie and Louis have now clearly realised that daily vlogging, and the act of filming, editing and uploading your life every single day is not really living at all. It’s hard not to liken what they are saying to addiction. Withdrawal symptoms when stopping. Using words like vlogging now being ‘a treat’, how they would sneak off in the middle of the night to produce more content so no one would judge them. If you swapped the word ‘vlogging’ with ‘drinking vodka’ it would be pretty obvious what was going on. I don’t make daily videos (thank god), but I do make a weekly podcast. It’s made me check myself to understand whether or not ‘producing things’ has become a part of my identity. Maybe this is a result of living and working in the Internet Age where so many traditional jobs are now extinct, that your output or productivity does eventually become your own yardstick to measure your self-worth by. I must admit, I did used to get some sort of a high from posting any sort of content online. The 'publish' button on my blog from 2010-2016 felt like puffing on a Marlboro Red cigarette. This is the thing, it’s OK to admit that we get a hit from being seen and acknowledged every time we click ‘publish'. But therefore we have to be honest with ourselves that it could be all too easy to let a good feeling spiral into a damaging habit of having to be product every day. Louis Cole touched on this in the video: “It’s [..] this thing of checking off a list that I’ve been productive that day, and I’d made a video, and that’s my identity. Like, I’m proud of myself because I’ve been productive today. Sometimes I’ll just watch TV shows all day, and I’ll be like, am I bad a person?” At worst, this is one of the first open conversations I’ve heard from successful YouTubers comparing the 24/7 Internet ‘hustle’ as a straight up addiction. At best, it is listening in to a group of friends who are simply getting older and want to wind down a bit. To me, the hustle has always been sort of forgivable during your roaring 20s: you’ve got more energy, your hangovers are less severe, you’re earning money for the first time, you’re feeling motivated by the unknown. But we need to start looking at certain social media usage as an addiction, and the obsession with the endless hustle square in the eye. It seems like Millennials, including those with never-ending Internet jobs, are suddenly realising there’s a life beyond the content they upload with the world. Finally. Time to get our heads out of the Cloud.

Project_BuildTutto Development Update 30
Hello everyone!
Stefano here and welcome to this brand new Project_BuildTutto Update! Pretty happy with this week's results, there were a lot of structural improvements and new objects, all spiced up with the usual performance improvements which are always nice.
youtube
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-StructuresManager Class
This is a really nice improvement. Before the introduction of this class all the static objects (the ones that doesn't really need an Update event each step because don't do anything fancy after their installation) were instantiated and managed just like all the other objects like furnaces and machines. This was a bit unnecessary and ugly to work with since the Level class needed to pass through every floor tile and wall tile individually once to update them doing nothing and once to draw them one by one. This class changed a lot. Now when a wall or floor (or anything static) is installed in the map, the important information of it is moved inside this structuresManager class, stored in a 2d vector grid and the original object is destroyed, saving a lot of space and compacting all the data into a more easily accessible structure. This class has also a single big bitmap which updates each time an object is added or removed, so the player doesn't notice any changes and the game keep showing these objects like they are still individual pieces. Other than performance improvements, this class also give me a much more comfortable place to work on more complex mechanics like the structural strength of the building the player will create or the roof/wall/foundation system which I'll talk more in-depth later.
Tumblr media
-Foundations
NB: Both Foundations and Roofs sprites are WIP, in two weeks I'll take a whole week to try improving the general graphics of each tile.
Foundations are always a really important part of any building, and in the game this fact is still true. Now the player can't simply place stuff like walls and floors anywhere he wants, but he has to build foundations first to handle the weight of the thing he wants to build in that tile. He'll also need to create strong enough foundation because obviously he can't place too much weight on a foundation made of simple wood (or glass if he is really a madman), because eventually those will collapse leading to very ugly situations.
Tumblr media
-Roofs
Roofs are another really important piece of this huge puzzle. The player will have to think a good way to build roofs to cover his building, but that's not it. Eventually I'll add the possibility to build more than one floor in a building, so roofs will need to be perfectly planned to be able to sustain the weight of the floors above it.
Different materials will lead to different roofs with different properties. For example, an iron roof is more rigid than a wood one, so it can extend further away from the wall supporting it without having an intermediate wall to support its distance, BUT an iron roof weights much more than a wood one, so the supporting wall needs to be able to support all that weight, otherwise it will collapse leading to other ugly situations.
Tumblr media
The “calculation of the distance of each wall to their support” algorithm took a big bite into my mental sanity since it had to support a whole bunch of different situations like: -Adding a new roof -Adding a new wall below an existent roof and update all the distances correctly -Adding a new roof that connects to another roof leading to a different balancing of their weights -Removing a wall below a roof and updating the new distances -Removing a roof disconnecting two chunks of roofs previously linked -Being able to always know on which wall each roof is supported        -Being able to know the total weight each wall is supporting -And other very situational conditions...
Tumblr media
-Foundations/Roof View Mode
Since both foundations and roofs are normally invisible or hided away from the player view, I added two more "special" view in the view mode to be able to see and easily manage roofs and foundations.

How Much Do Professional Video Cameras Cost and Which Ones to Buy?
Looking for the best professional video camera or a 4K video camera to kickstart your video making journey? For many, a resolution higher than the standard 16:9 (or 1920x1080) is still not needed, but 4K and 8K videos are steadily gaining popularity, with popular platforms like YouTube hosting video content in 4K. Many televisions and screens now come 4K-ready, which means that the demand for HD cameras that deliver 4K quality is also on the rise.
Tumblr media
So, let’s begin with a list to help you buy yourself the best video recording camera. Before we begin with the list, something that you should know is that a professional camera can cost you starting from 35,000 to basically anything, depending on the company and the make of the camera and of course, what do you want to use it for. Here’s a look at the best cameras out there in the market.
Panasonic HC-WXF991K
Tumblr media
An impressive release from Panasonic, the Panasonic HC-WXF991K boasts of  heavy specs on paper namely, a 1/2.3-inch 8.29-megapixel MOS sensor, 30.8-626mm Leica lens (f/1.8-3.6), 20x optical zoom, 4K UHD 30p, 1080p FHD 60p, a 3-inch touchscreen LCD, microphone and headphone input, and Wi-Fi, among many others. The best part about this video recording camera is 4K post editing, which allows you to zoom, track or even stabilise the footage after you’ve shot it. Now, that’s impressive. Another feature that’s niche is picture-in-picture. This allows you to record reactions and images simultaneously. In a nutshell, this will allow you to capture multiple angles or viewpoints simultaneously for a great experience.
Sony FDR-AX100
Tumblr media
Sony FDR-AX100 picks up where its predecessor, the RX100 left off. What makes it revolutionary is the fact that it was the first advanced level video    camera with 4K capabilities. Talking about features, it has loads of them. To name a few, it has a 1-inch 14.2-megapixel CMOS sensor, 29-348mm ZEISS lens (f/2.8-4.5), 3.5-inch touchscreen LCD, 4K UHD 30p at 100 MBps, FHD 60p, HD 120p, image stabilization, 12x optical zoom or 24x Clear Image zoom, 5.1 Dolby surround sound, USB charging, Wi-Fi and NFC. Though it inherits its image sensor from its predecessor, the new image processor helps it deliver more accurate reproduction and images of higher resolution. The camera also offers superb image stabilisation when shooting handheld. It also offers great battery life - more than 2.5 hours of 4K 30p recording is possible.
Canon XC10
Tumblr media
This one is a versatile 4K video camera that is convenient and capable. It delivers the colour science Canon is known for and features a 1-inch 12-MP CMOS sensor, 27.3-273mm lens (f/2.8-5.6), 4K UHD 30p, FHD 60p, HD up to 120p and even a 4K timelapse function (wow!). The camera also offers Canon’s  C-Log and Wide Range Dynamic Gamma, which supplies the broadest dynamic  range and exposure latitude achievable from the sensor. The battery life of this video recording camera is excellent and it also features a rotating handgrip, which makes shooting awkward angles convenient and is a feature unique to this camera. It is a good choice for advanced amateurs and even professionals looking for a cost-effective option to shoot in 4K.
So here are the top picks for you if you want to get started on your filmmaking journey. I hope this article comes in handy when you’re out to buy your next professional video camera.

Reflection 24/03/2020: Middle Stages
Tumblr media
So, here we are in the middle stages of the FMP, or as I call it, the TFMP. Here, I’m going to reflect on what I have done so far, and what I’m going to do in the next 6 weeks. While that may not be a lot of time, I’ll do my best to do as much as possible.
Week 1 - 03/02/2020 - Start
Tumblr media
It all began with what everything starts out as... an idea. I started out doing some concept art, which is not one of my best features, but I gave it a shot anyway as I was going to have to make some at some point, because I wanted to.
Here is the concept art for my main character. The name in the top left “Darohn Terlex” is just a random name I came up with by combining multiple names together (Darren, John, Terry and Alex). I did this because I couldn’t think of a suitable name for my character who both has a male and female variant, as seen in the picture above.
But how about the actual design of it? Firstly, I chose to focus on an outfit style. I had ten in mind, five for both male and female individually. Each of them follow a different outfit (and hair style) that is worn by that, or both gender(s), excluding the headsets.
While the headset styles were wildly random ones I have thought of with no inspiration or facts, I chose to stick with the first one (Virtual Reality) as it is more realistic than the other ones. Like... have you ever seen anyone wear a headset that looks like a pair of bog-standard glasses? ...me neither.
As for colour schemes, I chose to stick with the grey, red and black one I mentioned in my Colour Schemes post. I have added those colours to the concept art, which is not a thing people normally do as concept art is mostly outlines and rough sketches. More on that in an upcoming post.
Week 2 - 10/02/2020 - Creating the character + base game logic
Tumblr media
Creating the character in Adobe Photoshop proved to be tricky at times. Mostly because I didn’t know what outfit to pick. I chose to go with the Fashion style for the male character, and a mix of Summer and Fashion for the female. I have chosen to do this because I liked both designs, but didn’t feel comfortable with using just one. That, and I felt it was more appropriate.
As you can see, in the concept art, the character is wearing boots, while in the sprites, they’re barefoot. This is because I was originally going to give them jet-boots in the game, but decided to go with a more advanced approach instead, as I’m using this time to expand upon my skills. However, that doesn’t mean I’m going to keep them barefoot. I’ll probably give them basic shoes or something, but it all depends on if I feel like it or not.
After the characters were finished, I took to the game. This allowed me to experiment with animations and sound effects. During this time, I was using placeholder sound effects that were dumped from a video game called Undertale (more info on that in posts mentioning it), which I quickly removed shortly afterwards.
Unfortunately, I came down with an dizzy illness near the end of the week, causing me to feel dreadful throughout the majority of February half-term, unable to work on anything. I recovered just before the next week started, though.
Week 3 - 23/02/2020 - Enemy intelligence
Tumblr media
What is a game without intelligence... ARTIFICIAL intelligence. Okay, granted, it is not programmed intelligence that lets a virtual being learn as things goes, it’s just hard-coded intelligence (meaning it cannot be edited without editing the source files).
During this time, I got to work on the first level of the game. While doing that, I also got to work on the parallax background (learn more about that in my 2.5D Platforming post).
Tumblr media
You can also see that I have implemented a pie chart. But not just any pie chart... a life pie chart!
Tumblr media
Basically, this pie chart is the artistic way of telling the player how many hits they can take before dying. More info on that in an upcoming post. Alongside the pie chart, there is a semi-transparent shape at the bottom of the screen with text on it. That is the game’s way of guiding you through what to do. It has been programmed to show for 6 seconds, after which it goes completely transparent, hidden from view.
You’re probably wondering how I keep track of every detail I have implemented... that is because I have been taking videos and screenshots of development! I won’t share any footage yet, but here is a picture of every video I have taken (as of 16/03/2020).
Tumblr media
As you can see, I have captured over 13 hours of footage! I actually have over 17 hours now, as some of it has been recorded recently but isn’t shown in this image. I am not uploading these raw, but I will provide a link to an unlisted playlist on YouTube with these videos in, except for #5, which dragged on for too long. I’m putting all of these raw videos into an hour long time-lapse so you can see how this game was made from the ground up if these screenshots aren’t enough for you.
Week 4 was mostly bug fixes, I’ll post a video here when I have created it, and as such this section will be edited.
Week 5 to 6 - 09/03/2020 to 16/03/2020 - Sound design and playtesting
youtube
This video goes over what program I used to create the sounds. Adding them to the game wasn’t hard, as I knew exactly how to add sounds and trigger them to play on demand at random intervals.
Tumblr media
The source code needed to play the sound isn’t hard to understand when looked at, but since I’m not posting source code online (apart from small extracts in images I’m posting here), I’m pointing out what does what, since you probably don’t understand source code anyway.
The Break... Out
As you’re probably already aware, the UK became part of a pandemic called the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak, which affected over 5,000 people in less than a month. To contain the spread of the virus, all schools, colleges and universities had to shut... including mine. I picked up everything digital and stored it online via Google Drive (except for the timelapse video, which I exported then uploaded it in private to YouTube for me to download it later on so I can still edit it), YouTube and GitHub (which is a development platform that I can upload and download my source code from), seeing as we may not be back in college until the summer holidays... which would be too late to do anything.
Now that I’m stuck in my house for goodness knows how long, I can still work on my project with ease seeing as I have a powerful computer to deal with the situation, as well as having all the software I use at college, which has been made free for students by the software developers so that we can temporarily work with them during this difficult time without having to pay a penny.
Soon, I will have my time-lapse video ready, as well as a full playthrough (and download link) of the game when it is finished. Keep an eye out as I will have more development posts coming soon.
