As much as I would love to see a new Black Jack anime in the 2020s (that, you know, actually has Pinoko in it and is closer in art style than Young Black Jack had been...), I would really like it if Tezuka Pro could give us something new like a Rainbow Parakeet anime instead? 

I mean, considering how sick some people are of getting new Astro Boy reboots (as well as of remakes and reboots in general nowadays), I think it would be nice to see Tezuka Pro mix things up and make an adaptation of something I have yet to actually see get an anime since getting into the Tezuka Star System, in this case of course, Rainbow Parakeet being a prime candidate~

Like, it doesn’t even need to follow the manga down to the letter imo either tbh, I just think making the show something like a mystery of the week format or something along the lines of that while utilizing the TSS characters at the same time would be interesting enough, you know?

(Bonus points if the mysteries themselves had a lot of thought put into ‘em, and the show didn’t dumb down any of the manga’s original stories to make the show ‘family friendly’ should they decide to actually incorporate them into the show too)

In addition, while I would also like it if the show could be faithful to Tezuka’s original style, I also wouldn’t mind if it decided to do something like GeGeGe no Kitaro or Ososan where it combined more modern anime visuals along with the older ones as well, like in original side characters or smth like that?  Idk man, I just really like Rainbow Parakeet himself as a character in what little anime I have seen him appear in, and with the right VAs, writers, and animators, I think him getting his own anime would be pretty neat~

In the mean time, however, I guess I will just have to wait and see what the future holds...

(Also, this is totally not a ploy for me to hear a modern day Rainbow Parakeet be voiced by Yuichi Nakamura, idk what you’re talking about)

when your grandma wants those pigeons out of the garden so she pulls out all the stops to repel them, but everything she does blows up in her face because knocking on windows also scares the little birds and makes the dogs bark, encouraging the dogs to chase pigeons encourages them to chase birds in general, your personal fave pigeon knows the dogs will never get him up there so he just sits there while they bark and give grandma a headache and the pigeons are all still semi-domesticated so any attempt to scare them is far more likely to work on the birds she actually wants in the garden. and you don't even have to DO anything, you get to just watch her have to slowly learn the hard way that pigeons are inevitable and it is literally pointless to get stressed out about their existence

Rosie has questioned her sexuality so many times.

when she was younger like in high school or smth (or whatever the British call it) she always thought that women were just. Unnecessarily beautiful. She always thought it was some type of jealousy, and not just. Her being sapphic.

her first and only boyfriend she married right after Highschool, since she was already so close to him and loved him, and he was her best friend and who doesn’t want to marry their best friend??

when she got out of college and took the job at the institute, she kept getting pressured by her family to have kids. She talked about it with her husband who was slightly questioning as well (but didn’t say anything), and he imediently got defensive.

after the paranoia hit and the eventual divorce, Rosie would occasionally try to date again, but she just couldn’t feel a real connection with any of the men she went out with.

eventually, she came across a few different queeer labels, including Sapphic, but she didn’t feel like she could since she’ en ever went out with a woman, and isn’t even sure if she wants to go out with a woman.

post-s3 she finally has a breather to look into things a bit more. Things aren’t as crazy or hectic (minus flesh incident) anymore and she goes out with a woman. She feels like they could be good friends, and would necessarily mind a romantic relationship either, but she still harbors some relationship trauma from her last one.

post canon flash forward, Rosie has a garden, about four different pride flags in her home (lesbian, aro, demi, to be specific, as well as the progressive pride flag), a parakeet, and is married to her lovely wife who is fully supportive of her weird attraction levels, and has her dream job with a company that is not full of fear entities.

I often have to stop and take a minute to think about the hundreds to thousands of souls that make up the Arrancar like a soul puzzle and it just happens that the strongest soul in the legion is the personality they display. When it was first explained how hollows could become Adjuchas and Vasto Lordes, it literally boggled my mind. Similarly to how it feels when you try to comprehend the size of the universe 🫨 it’s just beyond our capabilities

Most hollows are mindless, killing machines. Only thinking about their next meal. There are some hollows, however , who seem to retain some of their more dominant personality traits from when they were human. One of the best examples I can use is the hollow early on in the series, Shrieker. As a human was a sadistic serial killer, as a hollow he held onto those sadistic tendencies by torturing the young boy Yuichi Shibeta, who’s soul was trapped in the parakeet

I 💯 believe Shrieker had the potential to become an adjuchas, and therefore an Espada later down the line.

I like to think that everyone’s soul is made up of all these different emotions, in varying levels. Everyone has the potential to love and hate, hurt and heal. Feel joy and hatred, fear and confidence. I think that the dominant trait of that soul, fuels the hollow.

When they consume other hollows, and their souls, their dominant trait grows bigger and stronger with the same trait it had taken from the soul it had just devoured, the rest of the soul going towards the strength and power to the physical body.

All the Espada have such strong personalities, with particular traits highlighted, to almost an obsessive, consuming level, almost over showering every other part of their personality, that this leads me to feel right in my assumption.

 If enough of them dogpile each other, trying to feast on the other hollows, then they will merge into a single entity that contains all the minds and powers of the hollows involved. A Gillian-class Menos Grande is born.

When that hollow then goes on to a menos, most of them return into the mindless, hive like state of the other menos, loosing their identity completely . I believe only the souls with strongest, most undeniable traits, grown larger by all the other souls, can make it to the forefront, and control the menos as themselves and reclaim their identity.

This hollow morphs the Gillian into a new, unique form. Adjuchas or vasto lordes.  Were already in the hundreds or thousands of hollow souls, all devoured and combined to strengthen this one soul. Which is amazing to me. These Adjuchas are physically smaller than Gillians, tho incredibly stronger and smarter. Grimmjow is a great exaplme for the Adjuchas class: a panther hollow, vicious, a hunter, nimble and strong. He can take on Gillians with ease. But they have to work hard to stay that way, because if they don’t eat, they’ll loose their power and their mind, reverting back into the mindless Gillians, giving one of the other strong souls their chance to take over.

Alternatively, if an Adjuchas does eat enough hollows and gain enough power, it can evolve yet again, and become a Vasto Lorde. While this is very rare, it can happen, as we saw with Tier Halibel, Starrk, even the grand fisher made a reappearance as one. They are human in shape and appearance, incredibly powerful and fast, most similar to the final Espada.

All these souls, countless lives lost, combined to make just one entity, it mind blowing. When a hollow is cleansed, they free the souls. I hope that’s the case for all the levels of hollows. How many millions of souls would be lost otherwise with the defeat of most of the Espada?

1. I have a dog that saw Jesus be born and probably held him (she's 17 yo and cery healthy but extremely weird (she pees upside down????))

2 . I tried to have cactus once and killed them with too much water and also too little water. I also managed to kill a succulent of thirst (plants fear me)

3. I had a lot of animals growing up! A rooster named Mancha, a rabbit named Bunny (and another named Fuzzy), a lot of quails this same 17yo dog killed, a LOT of parakeets, hamsters, some songbirds (mostly turtledoves and canaries)! Most of them were birds tho, I have a type 🤡👍

extended the boy and the heron thoughts wowowowow

surprising no one, the score was gorgeous. it's been a hot minute since I've really been taken by a film's score mid viewing (at a theater especially), and I'm not surprised that this broke that streak. the space that Hisaishi leaves in between notes is fantastic, and I rlly enjoyed the pizz in the strings. as of rn my fav track is A Trap (went to look up that scene specifically afterwards lol)

animation is also gorgeous. people have pointed out the elements echoing his past films and god they are so endearing to me. I really love the design of kiriki's ship residence and her outfit. also really appreciated the classic Ghibli hug, and the lushness of the landscapes.

the film definitely felt long, although not in a way I hugely minded. I think the beginning was necessary to establish mahito so strongly, but it was lengthy. I wouldn't trade any of the depth for it being shorter, but I wouldn't have minded a more efficient version

this is a small thing but "person just straight up walks away into the forest" is one of my fav eerie tropes godbless natsuko

My fav sequences was the one stepping into the tower (with the image of mahito's mother melting, the rose falling etc), and the time spent with kiriko. the film really really fell into place for me there

I think anything I could say about the themes would be inadequate, but I did tear up with mahito trying to warn himi about the fire and her acceptance of it because she gets to have him. acceptance of loss in time travel media will always make me cry!! mahito also immediately choosing to go back to his world got to me for similar reasons. I love when fantasy/sci fi is used to convey themes on a level that is enhanced by the magic in the setting!!

I think this film is reckoning with a lot of themes that sometimes are clambering over each other to be heard, but it's more of an emotionally satisfying cacophony than truly upsetting. it's not as neat as other miyazaki films, but it's just as rich and full

Even tho pantalone is the bitchless one in commedia delarte but no one is as romantically hopeless as dottore, he would keep thinking about the sudden kiss he got on his cheeks for 3 weeks and still believe it was a “accident”

This is honestly hilarious, because as someone who's had to act out Commedia Dell'arte characters for theatre classes- Pantalone is so bitchless that women have quite literally vomited at the thought of kissing him in the few lazzi he's featured in it. His wife sleeps with other dudes, his posture is whack, he's caught fistfighting the Doctor in the background of several scenes- his whole shtick is that he's a bitchless loser and walks like a parakeet with scoliosis. Loser material, made to mock old rich dudes. That's it, that's the Commedia Dell'arte Pantalone right there.

The fact that both him and Dottore are outrageously attractive dilfs in the trailer is both confusing and hilarious for this very reason. Still old guys with back problems, but only pushing thirty or forty.

Dottore definitely thought it was just a weird greeting thing Pantalone does, because he's seen Pantalone kiss the hands of enough rich women to know. Until Pantalone gives him a big smooch on the lips- publicly, at that. And then proceeds to start giving Dottore a bunch of gaudy accessories- rings, expensive furs, expensive and gold threaded suits- you name it. Even goes as far as to offer a hand as if Dottore is some sort of noble lady, and pull him into a rather romantic dance, rather than straight up trying to kill him by stomping on his toes.

Dottore ends up having a crisis at two in the morning while the clones awkwardly watch him rant in bafflement.

Shalconimon was my childhood fan digimon. I had been a digimon fan since about when the toy town episode first aired in the usa and that was only because despite seeing the ad for "the show that is like Pokemon but they're DIGITAL MONSTER" I couldn't remember what channel it was suppossed to be airing on so I missed a good chunk of the initial airings of the first arc. I had immediately fell in love with the franchise and wondered "If I had a digimon, what one would it be?"

I didn't have internet at the time, but my grandparents did and I would try to find pictures of what other digimon existed that maybe weren't in the show when I would visit them, or if a classmate had the old cardgame I would ask if I could look at their cards so I could just know what digimon existed to be options for!

I was (and am) an indecisive child tho so I never could just point at one and say "Obviously THAT would be my digimon!' Unlike say, my older sister who took one look at he Pink Gabumon running around Gear Savanah in Digimon World and said "ah yes. Psychemon. There is my partner." (Though in modern times she's a big fan of Labramon)

It wasn't until the day that the finale to Adventure 02 aired, and right after it ended the trailer for Tamers aired; "I used to watch show show... I used to play the cardgame... I even made up my very own digimon! But now.... everything is real." (don't remember if that's how the trailer went) Just with the line " I made up my very own digimon, my dumb ass was like "Wait.... I can make up original fancharacters for things?????" And with that I went to work desigining my very own digimon!

I have always been a huge fan of dinosaurs and I always thought the dinosaur digimon where some of the coolest! The Triceratops were always my favorite (Though I like a LOT of dinos) and although Monochromon and Triceramon already existed I wanted my own Triceratops in my favorite color! (HOW DARE GAMMAMON bE like FIVE CERATOPSIANS IN A TRENCH COAT!!!!) I remember as a kid I could only draw him from the side as ya do, but no art from that era remains.

I remember me and my sister writing our own digital world adventures with our made up digimon and I can't remember really what they were about, but I think Shalconimon was intended to be... kinda an asshole? Like imagine instead of the usual Digimon/Tamer partnership where they almost immediately get along you had more like something from early Medabots where Ikki and Medabee were at each other's throats, or what if Hiro from Ghost Game had gotten Espimon as his partner from the start instead of Gammamon and Espimon just didn't like to listen? At the time with only Adventure and 02 out, and Tamers only having barely started airing the idea of that kind of partnership seemed novel and unique, and maybe inside my baby author brain, just maybe the idea of "Starting off on the wrong foot and having room to grow" sounded narratively satisfying?

About half a decade ago when I revisted him I redesigned him a bit. He was a little over designed from the beginning and decided to upgrade Shalconimon to a Champion Level digimon. Shalconimon was originally the rookie form. I don't remember giving him a Baby I, Champion, or Ultimate but he did have a stupidly conceived Mega that I now call PajamaAngemon because that is exactly what he looked like. Angemon in Pajamas... god why did I give him an angemon form that was so stupid? Anyway after his level promotion he ended up getting a new rookie who... doesn't have a 'mon' name? I just call it the Protocerakeet, because it looks like a fusion of a protoceratops and a Parakeet.

Somewhere in the mid 2010's, I think it was around 2014 or 2015, I had been feeling bummed at the lack of digimon world vpet rpg style games to scratch a digimon world itch, considering World for the ps1 was getting on 15-20 years old and the newest game in that style was Re:Digitize that STILL to this day doesn't have an official English release. I didn't know Next 0rder was in the works, so it just felt like Vpet Rpgs were just... not being made and if they were not being ported over. There had been a rise in games in the indie scene creating spiritual successors to games that the dev had loved growing up but the mainstream and AAA scenes just don't develope anymore and so I had started thinking up two potential game ideas that where intended to have that vpet rpg feel. One was about Cryptids, but it evolved into something less vpet rpg-ish and into a more LoZMajora's Mask/ Stardew Valley calendar based resource time management game. The other was about some kids finding themselves isekai'd to NOT!File Island to help NOT!Jijimon return NOT!Digimon back to NOT!File City while stopping one of the only other humans on the island, NOT!Analogman. So the second one was more of a scratch the serial numbers off Digimon world Clone, replacing Digital Monsters with Monster's based on Extinct Species. The Protocerakeet lives there as that idea's mascot/NOT!Agumon.

considering the previous discussion of rewilding- would it be theoretically reasonable to attempt to introduce conures to the US to replace the recently extinct and closely related Carolina Parakeet? Was thinking about how the last carolina parakeet and the last passenger pigeon both died in the same cage and now I’m sad

I don’t think there’s anything that fits close enough to the passenger’s niche tho

I don’t believe conures are generally cold tolerant (though the term “conure” refers to a broad swath of often only loosely related parakeet species), which is the main issue with that. Monk parakeets have established in parts of North America, they are hardier and would in theory make for a better candidate in my opinion. They are a bit problematic in causing outages when they nest on power poles though, so I’m unconvinced it would ever be approved. It’s also difficult to parse how much Carolina parakeets affected their ecosystem due to the incredibly poor records of the species’ natural history as observed from live specimens as they went extinct in the wild before ornithology was of interest to most people.
