may or may not be finished and posted, which may or may not lead to further chapters. depends on the old ADHD brain xvx
He recalls the first time his father looked at him after he emerged from that cursed crater. It was like seeing a stranger wearing his father's skin, a mockery of the tall and proud demon he had in his memories. The patchy fur and papery skin beneath, the cracked hooves, the bright fever in his eyes as they took longer to recognize him than he dared to dwell on. Hai'er wondered if his father had that same haunting image of him now, a mirror house ghost of the young boastful fire demon that blazed through their family halls with pride unmatched. His gaze had certainly dwelled on the golden fillets on his limbs and neck, the scars on his arms long healed that still ached on cold winter mornings, the dull extinguished brown of his hair that once roared red and bright like a wildfire in his youth. What his father thought of them he had made clear plenty of times since that reunion, with varying levels of punctuated anger and bitterness and misplaced blame. But that first gleam of those moss green eyes after centuries, Hai'er hadn't been able to decipher nor dared to ask. He watched as his parents helped each other to more bites of the meal, and exchanged food over bowls of rice and broth. That bittersweetness hit him again, like the stabbing of blades through his sternum. He would know that feeling horridly well. They had each other again, tainted as that small victory was by the unbreachable rift that now lay between him and them, wide as golden fillets and whispered sutras in bamboo groves. They had each other. That should be enough. Hai'er picked at his own meal. Vegetarian of course, they never denied him that. But the vial of strong rice wine next to an alms bowl sitting in arm's reach was a backhand enough. They were too good hosts to not deny him a proper meal, they wouldn't push him away like that, but they certainly made sure he knew how unwelcome his choices were. Again, he certainly made his bed with them. If he wanted to toast with them as a family, he just had to renounce centuries of cultivation and reforming. Them or his master. Family or Righteousness. He bit back a bitter smile; no biggie, right?

niuhou for ship opinions?
Aroace Sun Wukong truther though I am, in all honesty anon the niuhou ship is one of my favorites in the jttw fandom <3.
It's true that in Xiyouji itself we don't get a super in-depth amount of space dedicated to the details of their relationship when they were sworn brothers, but there is a real sense that they genuinely liked AND respected each other. And that's a feeling that's really increased when we see their reunion later on during the journey, when even with an absence of over 500 years and a lot of reasons for antagonism for the both of them (the Demon Bull King wants to eat Tang Sanzang & otherwise hinder Sun Wukong's journey, Sun Wukong played a major role in getting Red Boy captured by the Bodhisattva Guanyin & caused Princess Iron Fan a lot of physical pain), both spend quite a few pages dancing around whether they're going to attack the other because of their former strong bond until things irrevocably crumble. Wu Cheng'en even dedicates an entire poem to how tragic this break-up is (and how epic the resulting fight was lol).
But probably best of all for me is that this is one of those ships where both characters really get to shine through as their own individual people with rich stories. When you look at other ships involving the Monkey King (especially the tons of movies with a SWK romance) it tends to be the case where the romantic partner in question seems to revolve their entire life and personality around old Monkey in one way or another, usually with a heavy dose of "being eternally patient & forgiving no matter how much shit he gives them" and also ending with the fate of them dying so that he can be sad/having to Learn a Lesson. So yeah said "romantic partners" often feel more like hollow shells or desperate obsessives than full people.
Which to put it academically sucks major balls.
With Niuhou, however, that's not the case at all! Obviously a good chunk of Xiyouji is dedicated to Sun Wukong's character and his multitude of complexities and development, but even in the few chapters we see him the Demon Bull King really stands out as one of the yaoguai kings who had a very active life after the Mt. Huaguoshan war with heaven, doing everything from gathering wealth, allies, power, and friends to getting married and having a child that he very much loves to then having a falling out with Princess Iron Fan because he took on a concubine with Princess Jade Countenance. He's also described as being just as powerful as the Monkey King (while also being stockier), and his rage really is something that can shake the Heavens! It all makes for a very involved part of the journey, ranging from Sun Wukong and numerous gods having to go to battle against a colossal Niu Mowang to the Demon Bull King calling time-out on a preliminary fight because he wanted to go party with some of his dragon friends.
And as a final bonus this is also one of those rare ships involving the Monkey King where he's actually very obviously invested in maintaining it, from being his active and ambitious social self as a warlord to trying every which way to get what he needs from the Demon Bull King to continue the journey while still maintaining his bond with Niu Mowang. And while it does end in tragedy, you do have the delight of thee Monkey King approaching the situation like "PLEASE bestie my beautiful princess with a disorder PLEASE remember what we mean to each other!!!" And then the Demon Bull King being like "me remembering that is the only reason why I haven't killed you where you stand."

another way to see it is DBK knows how much his wife worries and cares about mac, and probably had to help console her when he just suddenly ghosted her. also thats still his sworn younger brother and while he's not the kind to openly show it, still cares. the arrangement with their children would ensure that mac couldn't just disappear on them again and make sure he was well taken care of. after all the bull family is strict and firm but they make sure they take care of their own.
.
i wasnt sure how to characterize dbk before, or how exactly his and macaques dynamic would be
honey you single-handedly fixed that THANK YOU
OH I LOVE THAT SO MUCH CAUSE YOUR R I GH T. THAT ISIMPLANTED IN MY BRAIN NOW AND UR PROBS GONNA SEE IT IN THENEXT CHAPTER OR TWO THANK U THANK U THANK U

Do you ever remember that Wukong stuffed DBK under a mountain. For 500 years. When the exact same thing happened to him. That Wukong, of all people would know how lonely and isolating and agonizing it is, yet he still did it anyway,,
Especially since like, they were brothers in JTTW. After the whole title fiasco, Wukong basically said to all his brothers that they could also be Great Sages. DBK was the first to pick one for himself,,,, they had a pretty dang good bond, and Wukong just,,,,, Wukong put him under a mountain
Did Wukong even realize it at the time? Does he see DBK's imprisonment as different compared to his? Was it because DBK literally had the fucking Samadhi Fire in his nose and Wukong thought imprisoning him would mean no-one would get the piece??
Damn now I made myself curious,,,,,,

Sun clan AU character directory
[this directory will be edited and updated as time goes on and the story progresses]
Tumblr media
THE ELDERS: older generation, live on the deeper chambers of the Shuilian Mansion and enjoy the respect and honors by all the beings in Huaguoshan.
An-kong Tudigong (Grandpa Earth God)
Earth God of Huaguoshan, appears mostly as a moss-green furred orangutan but has many forms. Reclusive and reticent, but loves dearly all the beings living on his mountain. Adoptive father of Wukong.
A-ma Longan (Grandma Dragon-Eye)
Matriarch of a monkey troop, Francois Langur. Dry yet caring, often serves as a protector of the monkeys of the mountain and a middleman between spirits and mortal creatures. Her duties were mostly taken over by Wukong after he became king. Adoptive mother of Wukong.
I-bo Lanye (Auntie Orchid-leaves)
Granddaughter of Longan, and second in command, Silvery Lutung. Fond and overbearing, takes care of the troop whenever Longan leaves to maintain the peace. Biological mother of Jinju.
Shandanmao (Coral lily cat), also called Au-bo Shanhu (Stepmom Coral)
An asian golden cat who once attempted to eat Longan, and was made to atone for her attack on the mountain's Tudipo by serving as her bodyguard.
Wukong, also called Shihou (Stone Monkey) and Xiaoshi (Little pebble)
King of Huaguoshan. Rules over several troops that live on the mountain and shelter in the Water-Curtain Cave, and helps to keep the peace and balance among the creatures and demons.
THE FOUR STALWART MARSHALS: The Monkey King's trusted second-in-commands in the kingdom's hierarchy, and Wukong's closest confidants.
Liu Jinju (Golden-Orange)
Ma Yuehua (Moon-Flower)
Ba Hongteng (Red-vine)
Beng Maqaw (Mountain-pepper)
THE GOLDEN CAPTAINS: Trusted soldiers directly under the command of the Stalwart Marshals, but especially under Jinju/Marshal Liu
Songzhen (Pine-needles)
Second-oldest of the group, a laidback Ebony Javan Langur.
Suanguo (Sour-fruit)
The youngest and grumpiest of the bunch, a red-shanked douc.
EXTENDED FAMILY: Members of the sworn brothers' kingdoms who end up joining Huaguoshan in some manner.
Erwangzi Xiangjing (Second Prince Fine-Fragrance), also known as Prince Rougui (Cinnamon)
Wukong's mate and trusted friend, Cat Ba langur. One of the rescued monkeys from the Monstrous King of Havoc's lair, trusted advisor and cousin-in-law of Yurong Wang (Golden Snub-nosed Monkey King). Charming, eloquent and wise, but wears his heart right on his sleeve. After the two kings build an alliance, Xiangjing and Wukong become quite fond of each other, and after some failed courting attempts, Wukong accepts Xiangjing's affections.
Rinrin, also called Xiaohuo (Little fire)
Ranked sentry and scout, Rhesus Macaque demon. Once part of Niu Mowang's kingdom, she sought to earn further rank and merit by learning exorcism techniques to dispel minor demons who'd dwell on the edges of the mountains. She became emotionally attached to a human demon hunter, and when she left the mountain in shame, said human followed her. She earned the friendship of Wukong swiftly, which also earned her a spot in his court despite displeasing the Bull Demon.
Xiaojie Duan
Skilled demon hunter, human. While she's accomplished in exorcising and conquering demons and spirits, her true goal was to find someone she loved to settle down and raise a family with. What luck, that said person turned out to be a demon monkey in disguise! Not one to back down from her affections, she followed after Rinrin and together they settled in Huaguoshan.
THE SEVEN PRINCELINGS: Wukong's children by order of age.
Wumiao (Witch-sprout)
Adopted first daughter, fairy crane demon. Eternally youthful and ethereally beautiful lady. Often bears a feathered fan in her hand and a pinewood sword at her waist. Gentle and demure, adores her father and siblings. Head priestess of the Huaguoshan Daoist temple, and protectress of the Heavenly gate there.
Bailian (White-face)
The largest of the quintuplets, Bailian has snow-white pale skin no matter the season or weather, and fur like clouds at dusk. Despite being the firstborn son and the only one able to walk on clouds and water, Bailian has frail health and a sickly disposition, and thus seldom interacts with the world at large. His father and siblings tend to be overprotective due to this, much to his dismay.
Liangwei (Two-tails)
The second daughter, Liangwei has a head of golden fur and two prehensile tails. She has a cunning mind and a sharp tongue, always quick to reply and twist people into knots with her words. She enjoys entertaining guests and kindred with masterful poetry and rhymes, as much as others enjoy hearing her. Her eyesight is quite poor, and she often relies on Sanyan and her tails to help her find her way around.
Sanyan (Three-eyes)
Second-born son, with a somber and dry temperament. Though his appearance seems at first not to stand out against his more visibly magical siblings, Sanyan possesses a third eye often hidden in his fur when closed. It can see the true nature of all things, though what he knows he seldom shares. Sanyan is selectively mute, and communicates through sign language or by borrowing Liangwei's sharp tongue when she's around.
Shuashua (Playful):
Third son among the five, and by far the most energetic. Most well known as a never-still blur, Shuashua is nimble and covered in colorful stripes of fur and has a snub nose. He's known for never sleeping or ever seeming to rest at all, and spending most of his time with some activity or another. Not the sharpest tool in shed, but his bright and hard-working disposition more than makes up for it.
Si'er (Four-ears)
Third daughter, and by all measures the runt of the quintuplets. She has a calm and sweet disposition, but her particularity of having four calf-like ears and sensitive hearing often tends to put off the others of her family and kingdom. Reincarnation of [redacted], aware of past life. Deeply devoted daughter and sister, tries her best to right the wrongs of the past. Has terrible tinnitus and migraines that turns her physically monstruous. Keeper of the sealed temple of [redacted].
Danxia (Cinnabar Cloud)
Adopted fourth son, human. An orphan left in Wumiao's temple. Despite growing up surrounded by demons, immortals, and fairies, the boy had no contempt for his peers, instead striving to learn as much as he could to keep up with his siblings.
THE KING'S DISCIPLES: newcomers to Huaguoshan after the fire, brought in thanks to the pilgrimage west.
Xiaoyu (little fish), Congcong (verdant), Jiazao (hearth)
Three female macaques Wukong rescued from being stable monkeys, and have stuck to the group to cater to the artifacts and run minor errands. Trained in combat by Wukong, and later joined the mountain kingdom as warrior nuns and established a Buddhist temple.

"Who's..Niu Mowang?" MK asked squinting at the contact on Wukong's phone.
"Bud, that's DBK."
"Wait, he has a name?!"
"...kid."
"I mean, I just always heard him be called DBK?"
"Kid."
"You can't blame me!"

losing my mind over how niu mowang and sun wukong's spiel in when sun wukong became great sage directly parallels simon and christine's argument and to me that has a romantic connotation
but also it's a great way to tie in the two storylines

Well here I come with another question Shark
Of all the Yaoguais that Wukong and company have faced (but more talking on Wukong's side). Who do you feel was the one that really gave the Monkey King real trouble?
And by the way, of all the Yaoguias that Wukong has faced, which one is your favorite?
PS: 2 questions in 1
Tumblr media
While there's a number of yaoguai who give the Monkey King and co. a really hard time (Yellow Wind Demon, Red Boy, etc.), I'd have to say that the one that gave him the most trouble was the Bull Demon King not only because Niu Mowang is one of the few yaoguai who's abilities are equal to Sun Wukong's, but also because of the fraught emotions involved on account of them having been former sworn brothers and best of friends. The arc involving Sun Wukong and Niu Mowang duking it out is one of the longest in Xiyouji, and one of the things that's REALLY emphasized here is the lengths to which the Monkey King is trying to fulfill his duty to the journey without fighting his former bestie. tbh you could even make the argument that his sentiment towards the past and this cow yao makes Sun Wukong a bit of a failguy here, as if memory serves correctly there's a couple of times where he asks the Bull Demon King to borrow a magical fan that the pilgrimage needs, Niu Mowang curses him out, and the Monkey King's response is somewhere along the lines of "...but we're still friends and you're still going to let me borrow the fan, right?" Plus Wu Cheng'en himself included a lengthy poem in this arc about how much Sun Wukong and Niu Mowang are matched and how sad their falling out is. Fun stuff to be sure!

I hope the TikTok stuff isn't gonna get too overwhelming for you but it's understandable if you need to take another break. Remember to take care of yourself.
In other news Mac being betrayed by everyone at the table and his internal monologue about yeeting nezha was my favorite part I was giggling so much
Thanks, its not rlly just the tik tok stuff. its..in a sense ive always wanted a bunch of followers and to share my stuff with alot of people so that i can be a "big and cool artist/writer" so like...on one hand im super grateful. on the other hand alot of people follow me, alot of people listen to what i have to say. so, guess im just anxious about accidentally doing or saying something wrong. ynow?
but enough of that. im getting used to it all.
Hehehe that was one of my favorite scenes to write, next to the Pengu scene. It was really fun cause I love making purple hyacinths go from "this is my son, he is traumatized and needs a nap. we are alike and i will care for him/this is my father and we force each other to take care of ourselves. i hate it bc im rlly defensive but deep down i truly appreciate it and would be sad if he didnt take care of himself" to "Im going to fucking punt you"
they are. everything
also mowang is just going along with his wife while tang is genuinely concerned.
Macaque has been cornered-get 'im
Im so glad you liked it thank you!i love hearing about what parts you guys liked!
