Berkisah tentang Winston yang bekerja di Kementrian kebanaran mulai bosan dengan rutinitas yang ia kerjakan maupun pengawasan yang dilakukan oleh partai dan bung besar dari bangun tidur hingga ia akan terlelap. Poster Perang ialah damai; Kebebasan ialah perbudakan; Kebodohan ialah kekuatan dan Bung besar mengawasi saudara terpampang dimana-mana. Teleskrin, kamera pengawas, hingga mikrofon tersebar disemua tempat dan bersiap mengawasi seluruh warga Oceania bahkan saat mereka sedang bermimpi. Gerak-gerik mencurigakan atau bahkan ide perlawanan yang baru muncul dalam kepala pun dengan cepat diketahui oleh polisi pikiran yang bisa menyeret siapapun menuju Kementrian cinta kasih. Tak terkecuali Winston, ia bahkan harus kucing-kucingan dengan ketatnya pengawasan yang ada untuk bisa berkencan dengan Julia dan merencanakan perlawanan karena ia percaya pasti ada kelompok dengan kekuatan besar yang bisa menggulingkan kekuasaan partai dan bung besar, hal itu pula yang membawanya menuju O'Brien, kitab terlarang Emmanuel Goldstein, dan tentu saja membawanya pada akhir.
