4 Alternatives to Popular Writing Advice

Some writing advice get passed off as something every writer has to do. The truth is, these tips might not work for everybody! NaNo participant Nicole Wilbur offers some alternatives to popular writing advice that may be a better fit for your writing needs.

While there are no definitive writing “rules”, there’s certainly writing advice so common it feels like it’s become canon. Most popular writing advice is generally good – but what if it doesn’t light up your brain? What if a particular tip doesn’t resonate with you?

 If this popular advice isn’t working - try these alternatives! 

Common advice: Make your character want something.  Alternative: Ask what your character is most afraid of.

Your character usually wants something – the MC’s goal driving the story is a common plot, after all. That something needs to be concrete, meaning the audience will know definitively when they’ve achieved their goal. 

(Is “found independence” concrete? No. Signed the lease on their first apartment? Yes.)

But if you aren’t sure yet, or what they want doesn’t feel motivating enough to support your inciting incident, start with a different question: what is your character afraid of? 

Katniss wants to survive, with her family, yes. But she’s terrified of helplessly watching them die. 

Common advice: Identify your story’s theme and stick it on a post- it above your computer.  Alternative: Use the character’s arc to create a main idea statement, and craft several related questions your story explores. 

English class really made ‘theme’ feel heavy-handed. In my grade nine English class, we listed the themes of To Kill a Mockingbird as: coming of age, racism, justice, and good vs. evil. 

While these are the topics explored in the book, I’ve never found this advice helpful in writing.  Instead, I like to use the controlling idea concept (as in Robert McKee’s Story) and exploratory questions (as in John Truby’s Anatomy of Genres).

A controlling idea is a statement about what the author views as the “proper” way to live, and it’s often cause-and-effect. The exploratory question is – well, a question you want to explore. 

In It’s a Wonderful Life, the controlling idea is something to the effect of “Life is meaningful because of our relationships” or “our lives feel meaningful when we value our family and community over money.” The question: How can a single person influence the future of an entire community?

Common advice: List out your character’s traits, perhaps with a character profile. Alternative: Focus on 2-3 broad brushstrokes that define the character.

When I first started writing, I would list out everything I wanted my character to be: smart, daring, sneaky, kind, greedy, etc. I created a long list of traits. Then I started writing the book. When I went back to look at the traits, I realized the character wasn’t really exhibiting any of these.

Instead of a long list of traits to describe your character, try identifying three. Think of these like three brush strokes on a page, giving the scaffolding of your character. Ideally, the combination of traits should be unexpected: maybe the character is rule-following, people-pleasing, and ambitious. Maybe the character is brash, strategic, and dutiful. 

Then – and this is the fun part – consider how the traits come into conflict, and what their limits are. What happens when our ambitious rule-follower must break the law to get what she wants? Sure, a character might be kind, but what will make her bite someone’s head off?

Common advice: Create a killer plot twist. Alternative: Create an information plot. 

Readers love an unexpected plot twist: whether a main character is killed or an ally turns out to be the bad guy, they’re thrilling. But plotting towards one singular twist can be difficult. 

Instead of using the term plot twist, I like thinking in terms of Brandon Sanderson’s “information” plot archetype. 

An information plot is basically a question the reader is actively trying to work out. It could be like Sarah Dessen's Just Listen where we wonder "what happened between Annabel and her ex-best friend?", "why is Annabel's sister acting strangely?" and "who is Owen, really?" Those all have to do with backstory, but information plots can be about pretty much any hidden information. Another popular question is "who is the bad guy?" - or in other words, "who is after the characters?" The Charlie's Angel franchise, for example, tends to keep viewers guessing at who the true antagonist is until the last few scenes.

Mariana just kinda appeared outta nowhere and Juanita got left at his door and as the Lord of the Quesadilla Village he just fuckin' had to keep her until he found her mother

on said adventure he meets this very pretty guy who for reason has really long green hair and pieces of slime on him like HUH? AND HE'S FLIRTING WITH HIM?? AND HE COMES OVER TO VOUCH FOR HIS INNOCENCE ALONG WITH HIS OWN KNIGHT FOOLISH?

okay and now he has a fucking Wyvern and offered to give him a ride? fuck yesss, but honestly even if he wants to jump this man's bones like every other bitch but he has a kid to take care of! and a village! also Foolish is kinda hot and Charlie is a knight for another village

Mariana just looks like his normal self, some people question the outfit but he doesn't really know either

Charlie's outfit is exactly like Laurance's, but his hair is Green because his childhood friend, aka. Wilbur Soot, and who he considers his brother, dyed his hair and disappeared before he could change it back

Charlie ended up having to take care of Tallulah, Wilbur's daughter. Phil, the new Lord of Meteli also takes care of her and his other son, Chayanne. Missa is his guard.

Quackity takes Sasha's role, having died and turning into a Shadow Knight. Tilín disappeared after his death and Charlie is still working on trying to find them.

when Mariana goes to save the Chicken Shaman, aka. Maximus, Charlie sacrifices himself to save them, hoping for Maximus to turn Wilbur back to himself

he gets raptured and turned into a Shadow Knight, where he sees Quackity as Sasha, Luzu as Gene and someone else (i have yet to figure out who should be Vylad. )

Mariana is honestly fucking devastated that Charlie is in the Nether with no help and no way to come back, until he sees him while on a trip with Juanita. Charlie wanted to reach out to Mariana and hug him and kiss him, but he couldn't. the rage imbued in him by the Shadow Lord making it also impossible from pulling out his sword and gutting Mariana, the last Lord he served. but seeing little Juana there, staring at him with big bright eyes and a smile, reminded him of Tilín and Tallulah. it broke his heart and he fled, afraid of hurting the poor child.

when Mariana later finds Charlie, blind, hurt and nearly on death's door with the wyvern, Cucurucho (yes Cucurucho bc qCharlie's interactions with it are funny and adorable and sad) suddenly turned dark and disappearing

Wilbur, now turned normal thanks to the combined efforts of Vegetta (Zoey) and Cellbit (Kawaii-Chan), came to visit and Mariana left to give them space, but thennnnnnn

the High Priest, Rubius, is outside his tattered house which was blown up by Leo (Zenix) while he was on his adventure for the mother of Juanita. threatening Charlie

yaddi yaddi yada, story goes as normal y'know, except arguments and love between Charlie and Mariana and jealousy with Charlie over Foolish and Mariana

now misc facts about this version of this AU go! -> Charlie is a slime elemental and human hybrid. Mariana is still Lady Irene and i guess a reincarnation? Aaron doesn't exist in this version. Tilín takes Malachi's role, having died and become a ghost with the same fear powers, but Charlie takes them in instead of Mariana. Roier is Dante. Donna and Logan are Forever and Bad respectively. Jaiden is Kiki, and Fit is Brendan. Emmalyn's role is taken up by Baghera. Lucinda is Etoiles and Nicole is Melissa. yes. no, it doesn't make sense. yes, i know.

Charlie, instead of being greedy and mean, is very friendly and weird and quite diabolical, a slime hybrid. when he gets turned into a werewolf, it messes with his slime and instead transforms him into and eldritch mix of werewolf, slime and demon with too many limbs, too many eyes and teeth and claws, too much fur and goop and,,,, tentacles? goo goobie bitches

Mariana is a nurse who got moved into the "Babe House", and after seeing the hot buff merchant, he's very much into it and wants to become a sugar baby, but instead falls in love and gets married. mission failed successfully?

their relationship is very much playfighting and joke arguments that seem a bit too real for others. they are madly in love and have done el sexo de grande multiple times. even with Charlie in monster form. Charlie gets ruts btw– *gets shot*

when they get kidnapped, Charlie fights tooth and nail to keep Mariana safe, at the expense of his health. he's near death when rescued by the Lord, and frantic in going back to Mariana

Flippa, the lone survivor of the murder of her tribe, later found by Charlie, instead of the Lord of his village. he takes her in and treats her just like he would his own biological daughter

then when he sees Mariana again, reencuentro el sexo de grande

when they go back home, Charlie goes back to his job and dotes on his brand new daughter and his bitch wife like no other, it's sickening how much he adores his family

and during the war, Charlie stays behind to fight, wreaking havoc against his opponents. and during the 15 year time-skip, he waits for Mariana patiently, sitting at the docks like dog waiting for its owner. when he comes back with Flippa, Charlie almost tackles them into the ocean with how happy he was, crying with Flippa about missing each other and kissing Mariana breathless

the Backflippo family is one of the few who stayed at the village. Charlie is one of the few people who are capable of fighting off the bandits easily, along with the help of Juanaflippa, but he has to he away to keep getting more resources and food to keep everything ok and running

Mariana starts a garden at the wish of Juanita, giving them to Charlie to sell and Juana to make crowns of and press them. he farms as well and makes sure everyone stays healthy, rasing Juanita while Charlie is off doing business and exchanging letters with him almost every single day, sending them talking about their days and how they're doing while away

they're so in love your honor

Juana is very hyper and very energetic, practically hounding Charlie to play and teach her how to be a werewolf every time he's home. whenever that happens Mariana takes a big big nap and enjoys whatever gift Charlie brought back

A/N: Part 8 or as I like to call it the part where I make up random name for characters. I feel like every chapter is slowly getting longer and I don’t know if people like that 🤷‍♀️ Also, completely unrelated, call me what you like is a banger. I love it. Have been playing in on repeat.

Summary: A day in the life of actor, y/n l/n. Also, Lovejoy sold tickets for their tour. Did you get one though? (Read to find out lol)

 "What happened to keeping a low profile and staying off social media?"

You sighed. You knew this would happen. You were expecting it since yesterday, when your fans freaked about your appearance in Wilbur's stream—or more precisely in his chat—and the aftermath of it was you trending on Twitter again and another round of speculation about your love life started rolling out. You turned from the car window, the streets of Los Angeles passing by, to your publicist, Anne, who was sitting across from you in the car. Next to her was your recently hired assistant, Nicole, watching the interaction with intent and curiosity.

"I was bored and had nothing to do. So, I thought why not." You shrugged.

"You're doing press in the next few weeks. You know, there's a possible chance they might ask you about it, right?"

You waved your hand, suprisingly nonchalant about it. " I'll handle it. Besides, you could do your charm and ask them not to ask me about my relationship right, Anne?"

Anne rolled her eyes and sighed, writing something in her notebook. "Sure, I'll tell James about it when we see him."

The red headed woman turned to the person next to her. "If James and I aren't the room, and the interviewers started asking personal stuff, tell them to change their question, okay? Be assertive."

Nicole nodded fervently. "Okay."

"Thanks guys. Sorry for being such a hassle."

"Oh, please, I've handled far worse." Anne revealed. "You're practically a goody two shoes compared to all the delinquents I've had before."

You leaned closer to Nicole, lowering your voice. "By that she means I'm her favourite."

Nicole smiled, finally loosening up.

"I can still hear you."

You flashed a grin. "I know. I'm only doing that for dramatic effect. I am an actor, you know."

Anne shook his head, though a smile still escaped her lips.

After twenty minutes of car ride filled with comfortable silence and the occasional small talk, the three of you finally arrived at the hotel where the start of the press tour will happpened. The tranquility of the morning turned into a string of boisterous activities that you've grown all too familiar with. Coffee, hair and make-up, another coffee, food, clothes, light snack, and finally the interview. Everything was fast-paced, constantly moving and never staying in one place for a second longer than necessary. It was understandable, the rushing, but that doesn’t mean you like it—you never did.

You were on your fifth interviewer of the day, talking about your film, Companion of The West. A drama driven film about a group of people trying to solve the murder of a person that seemed to be connecting them all together. So far things have been going smoothly, although the questions have became repetitive, none have asked you intrusive question about your personal life. But, there was this nagging feeling inside you that something was about to go wrong. And, it did.

"So, y/n, you've been very busy this year, haven't you?"

You smiled at the interviewer in front of you. "Yeah, I think this has been my busiest year yet. But, you know, I think it's because there have been tons of good project that I was lucky enough to be offered and you know, I just want to get my hands on all of them."

Martin, the interviewer, nodded along. A question card in his hand. "Oh totally, I get that. I mean you’re at the top of your career right now. Wouldn’t want someone to take that away, right?

You frowned slightly. That's not what you meant at all. But, still you kept a friendly smile.

"It's not really about that honestly. It's just that I'm very grateful to be offered these past couple of roles that I've gotten, so I just wanted to be in it, you know."

"Yes, yes, of course. Moving on."

It was at that point when it finally dawn on you. Behind the smile and enthusiastic nature was someone with hidden intention. Martin was one of those people who lulled you into a false sense of security to get you to accidentally talk about something or twist your words to create false and unnecesary drama. You were once caught in the middle of it. When you were still new to the industry, all bright eyes and too naive. You talked too much and they used that on you. You shared a glance with Nicole, who seemed to have the same suspicion as you. She grew wary behind the camera and prepares to interfere if it was needed.

"Recently, you were trending again on Twitter." Martin mentioned. "Did you know about that?"

You nodded. "Yeah, my fans have a habit of getting me trending."

"And your fans seems to be particularly excited about your interaction with a certain someone.”

At this point, your friendly nature disappeared. Instead, you just sighed. A stoic and bored expression ddecorated your face.

"Yes. Are you going anywhere with this?"

Martin was amused at your sudden change in behaviour. "Is there someone new in your life? It's been awhile since you and Alex Moore ended your relationship. Are you not interested in dating anyone?"

Before you could speak, a small yet firm voice beat you to it. "I'm sorry, but we're not taking questions revolving y/n's personal life.”

Martin turned around. "It’s just the one. I’ll be quick.”

"I think you should leave."

At the sound of your voice, both Nicole and Martin turned to you.

"If that is your last question, which I doubt it is, then you should probably just leave now because I'm not answering it. You see this, Martin." You turned around, showing the film poster behind you. "I'm doing promo for this film. Not my personal life. So, if you have any backup questions regarding this film, by all means, ask them and I'll forget this ever happen but if you don't then the exit is behind you."

He opened his mouth but you raised your hand, cutting him off. "Look, man, I still have a whole lot of people waiting and honestly, you’re just wasting everyone’s time. So, why don't you just do us all a favor and leave? That way everyone in this room could all go home early."

Martin was stunned. He wasn't expecting this type of reaction from you.  

You sighed again. "You could leave on your own or I could call the security to escort you out. I'm fine either way."

Martin glanced around, expecting someone to come to his defend. When he found nothing but pointed looks thrown at him, he scoffed before and walked away without a single word.

"Well, he's a swell guy," You broke the silence, sarcasm very evident in your tone. 

A few snickers was heard around the room.

"Do you want to continue, y/n, or do you need a couple of minutes?" Nicole spoke.

"Give me a couple of minutes. I don't want to accidentally direct my anger to someone."

Nicole nodded.

After a majority of good interviewers and a few bad eggs, you finally finished the first day of many of your press junket. You were already on the verge of sleep, eyes drooping and barely making it through the last couple of interviewers. The next step of the agenda was to head home, pack your bags, and head to the airport to fly to the Big Apple. You and Nicole were in the SUV, heading to your place, whilst Anne and James took another car straight to the airport to make sure everything was set up and no paparazzi was in the area. 

With barely enough energy, you scrolled mindlessly through your phone, liking pictures and videos of friends and fans when you come across a post that managed to wake you up. Nicole noticed, surprised about your sudden awake state. You were almost asleep just a second ago.

"What, what, what's wrong?"

You ignored her. "Shit, shit, shit."

"y/n, what's wrong? Did that Martin guy say something bad about you? I'm sure Anne—"

"No, no, it's not that." You shook your head frantically. 

"Then, what is it?"

In an Instagram post, Lovejoy officially announced their upcoming tour with a link to purchase their tickets. This was both good and bad. Good, because that means you could see them play and you would finally meet Wilbur in person. Bad, because the post was posted three hours and tickets for all the shows announced was already sold out. You kept refreshing the page, hoping luck would be on your side and a single ticket to any of the shows would still be available for you to purchase. Unfortunately, luck was not found anywhere.

"Fuck." You threw your phone on the seat out of frustration. "God, why did it have to be today of all days?"

Nicole, frustrated that you weren't giving her an explanation, took and examined your phone. 

She frowned. "It's only a band gig, y/n. I'm sure you could see them play some other time. Hm, I haven't heard of them though. Are they any good?"

Again, you ignored her. "I'm supposed to see him."

The car ride continued with you gazing out the window, saddened and Nicole trying to comfort you to the best of her abbilities even though she didn't quite get the situation. She knew it had something to do with the rumor—she learned about it when Anne pulled her aside to address it—or more precisely, the guy you were rumored with, but if you weren't together then why would you be upset about not going to his show or maybe you were but you were hiding it. She knew that was a thing for celebrities that like to keep their private life private and you certainly seemed to be the type.

When the car finally reached its destination, Nicole frowned at the sight of your lit house and a car parked on the driveway. When you, Anne and Nicole left your house earlier that day, there wasn't any car on the driveway and as far as she knew, you lived alone. Were you expecting someone to come by?

"Hey, y/n, why is your house lit? Do you have someone checking up your house whenever you're gone?"

You turned around from the other window. "Oh, that must be Sam. I told him to come by after I'm done before the flight to New York."

Without another word, you opened the passenger door and trudged toward the house with Nicole following you behind. You haven't told Wilbur about the ticket situation and a part of you didn't want to. You already said to him, multiple times even, how excited you were for his tour and now you forgotten about the fact that the tickets were sold today. He even told you about it yesterday after he finished his stream but you only just remembered it after seeing the post. 

"Hey there, stranger—woah, what happened to you?" Sam greeted you, a glass of wine in his hand. 

"I'm a forgetful idiot."

"Forgetful, yes. An idiot, that's arguable."

You sunk next to Sam, almost sliding down the couch. A pout on your face. "I forgot that Wil's band was selling their tickets for the shows today, so now I'm left with none because it's all sold out."

Sam winced. "Oof. That's tough."

You didn't respond, wallowing in self-pity. 

"Well, it's a good thing I manage to get my hands on a couple then.”

It took you a couple of seconds to grasp the meaning of Sam's words. When you did, you fixed your posture, stood straighter, eyes wide awake without a trace of fatigue in them. 

"You're fucking with me right now." You stared at him. "Do not play with me, Sam."

Sam smiled, placing his glass on the table. "I would love to, but I feel like you're either gonna hit me or cry if I do. So, I won't."

You screamed in excitement and proceed to tackle your best friend in a bear hug. Sam chuckled, listening to you showering him with appreaciation, gratitude, and love. Nicole who had just been minding her business in the kitchen, ran at the sound of your voice, only to grow confused at the sight of you two lying on the couch.

“Uh, is everything alright here?”

Both you and Sam looked up at her, you with the most brightest smile Nicole had ever seen that day.

“Everything’s perfect, Nicole.”

Okay, gonna go on a yapping spree

Quick warning ima mention some topics like self harm, and death

So here's B one because it has a lot to it it

So like I like to believe B was born in the 2000s, now his actual bio family has a very big link to this god called stardom (I'm going to make a design for them soon but to describe them, they usually wear an outfit similar to a priest, they have stars scattered across it and they have very long curly hair. They also have traits that of deer, they have hooves, ears and antlers) now Bs mother had him and his twin sister (brother at the time) a day apart. Right so she had this almost prophecy and had to give up B and his younger sister. Now like I've Said before B is a trans guy, he used to be a girl, who was called Nicole (if you read the prologue it should link up to James' Superstition) they were taken by this very caring woman who had a rather neglectful husband. So Reagan and B (or refered to as Nicole at the time) grew up with very little affection, and not understanding why someone could possibly be nice to him :(. Now onto the part about B breaking his leg really badly, he was actually around 5 1/2 at the time and was in the basement of his house, he was playing about and knocked over a very heavy piece of metal on his leg, breaking his femur bone in 3 places, this was actually really traumatic to B obviously, this lead to B developing a feeling that he should look all around for cautions around him, sometimes leaving him a bit panicked.

When he had turned 6, a new person had suddenly come into his clas in primary school, this kid had come from Germany and didn't know much english (you'll never guess who it was/pos) so they had actually become good friends, this kid actually was James (hence James getting a superstition in the prologue that he Recognised B.) Now after all that, Bs step mother had a child, but unfortunately one day she suddenly got seriously sick, B actually has a memory of him when he was just 11 in which his mother was visibly shaking a lot and was pale as fuck. She unfortunately died a month after B turned 12. Because of Bs step dad being rather neglectful, B and Reagan spent most of their time caring for their step brother, this went on for a while, B usually convinced Reagan to let him take care of him more because he just wanted Reagan to have time to grieve the sudden lost of their step mother, this led to B missing out a lot from school. This actually one leading cause to the s/h he had actually done it once after his mother died but soon all the stress caused him to cut himself multiple times per day.

Soon his uncle had taken in B and Reagan and they had to move away, leaving James alone without B.

Now time skip to when B was 18, this is one of his major traumas, B had only just become a backrooms explorer and had some experiences with it, a group of his friends decided to bring him along because he had a lot of experience already, so they could explore a rather dangerous room. B was obviously like "fuck no don't do that you could die" but they kept on trying to convince B until he gave in. Before they knew it they were cornered, B was actually the first to get attacked an entity charged at him and dug its teeth deep into the side of Bs neck (Wilbur soot core) and thundercunted him across to the side, all the others was like "oh shit" and tried to fight but unfortunately were ripped to shreds, B had to actually lay there and watch it unfold because if he moved he could become another victim.

Obviously after he was in therapy for a while and then disappeared and soon met James again.

Now James' one, a whole lot less terrifying. James was born in Germany obviously, at the time he spoke only German, until his parents decided to move to wales, so he had to learn a but of English. Fortunately the teachers there did give him extra help with english and understanding stuff. You see James is autistic but he didn't know anything about it fully until he was about 11,he thought it was normal to not understand social cues, have really big interests in things, to stim or get panicked by loud noises. James actually would get very stressed, and often would be babied, making it worse he wanted respect. This led to a lot of stress and soon he started to develop coping mechanisms, one of the main ones being eating (a reason why he's quite chubby in my hc, he's also chubby because I am a bit too). Alongside that James gets very clingy to people if they actually are nice to him, this can be quite self destructive because if they are gone for a while he can get really upset, James actually for a while had major separation anxiety when him and B first got together, this poor guy would actually cuddle pillows. James has actually had a really big hype fixation on chemistry since he first learnt about it but unfortunately he couldn't become a chemist so he chose the next best thing. Now about why James needs that visor. James had always had problems with his sight, he actually wore glasses but soon it started to get much worse until he actually went particularly blind, he was given the visor so he could see again and they could hopefully soon find a cure for the sudden blindness. But now they really can't, because uh oh an entity got him and ripped off the visor and pulled out his eyes, fortunately B ran in and saved him, and that led James to getting a bit of trauma too.

“My Two Dads” was Simply Ahead of its Time: A Short Essay by an Offspring of Same-Sex Parents

In 1987, the show “My Two Dads” premiered on NBC, staring Paul Reiser, Greg Evigan, Staci Keanan, and Florence Stanley. Nicole Bradford (Keanan) is a 12-year-old girl whose mother Marcy Bradford dies suddenly, and she is “willed” more or less to two men her mother was once in love with, Michael Taylor (Reiser) and Joey Harris (Evigan), who were lifelong friends before they fought over Nicole’s mother. Despite attempts at blood tests, the paternity of the child was never confirmed, and after a rocky start, Michael and Joey agree to live together and raise Nicole as a family.

What we have here is a simple, relatively family friendly, prime-time sitcom that shows a very positive interpretation of a kid with same-sex parents. And it is delightful.

I am speaking openly as a queer person raised by two mothers (now four w/step-moms). When I decided to try this, I was bracing myself for the absolute worst most offensive thing I’d ever seen.

And I swear to God, what I got instead is one of my new favorite shows of all time. The characters are lovable and well-rounded, the acting is great, the humor is actually funny, and, whether this was intentional or not, is one of the most progressive shows of its time.

I keep seeing people throwing around the word “homophobic” with this show, and I’m here to politely and firmly disagree with that. Instead, I will opt for the word “dated.” “My Two Dads” was still a product of its time, so I firmly believe many of the choices regarding Joey and Michael’s dating life were made to appease the censors. I never felt like any decision was made in malice to target the queer community. (Not to mention, I could/will make a whole LIST of reasons why Michael and Joey are 100% in love, if not an active couple, despite many attempts to convince the audience they are straight.)

I spent a good chunk of the show laughing to myself and saying “it’s like homosexuality doesn’t even exist in this universe” for how much NOBODY cares about Nicole having two dads or questioning why the dads live together. (Them being potentially gay is only questioned ONCE in the series.)

In the 90s and early 2000s, people never shut up with the questions once I told them I had two moms. I somewhat think this exclusion was also a writing tactic, not wanting Nicole to have to constantly repeat what the audience already knows.

There are jokes that haven’t aged amazingly well, but I feel like it was much more that the writers were ignorant as opposed to being active bigots.

I also really appreciated this show’s depiction of a kid who has a great and loving relationship with a parent she may not be or isn’t biologically related to. Nicole doesn’t care who her biological father is, and loves Joey and Michael equally. Again, as someone with two moms, I get really defensive over the notion that someone isn’t your real parent unless their DNA matches yours. (Side note, always say “biologically related to” as opposed to “REAL parent” whenever asking someone about their parentage. Please. It hurts every time.)

If I admittedly had one qualm about the show, I’d say it hasn’t aged amazing in terms of sexism. Throughout the whole show, it always felt like the women Michael and Joey dated were either complete jerks or bimbos. With the women they finally end up with being boring and rushed. And they also at one point have a female boss, and…it’s pretty bad. Nicole and Judge Margaret were great (Judge being my 2nd favorite character, behind Michael.), but other female characters not so much.

But overall, I really do love this show. It’s one of those really nice warm & fuzzy shows, too (Think “Full House” with slightly funnier writing. Yeah, I said it!). I really wish more queer viewers would try it.
