NEWSIES IS CLEARLY BETTER.

you would think the soundcloud tag would be better than the music tag, because tumblr autotags it, and there isn't a genre of broadway drivel called soundcloudicals that is impossible to filter out, flooding the tags with people who post every day about cats and newsies for some reason -- and yet, somehow, the soundcloud tag is also full of hazbin hotel fanart. i had to see someone say "i can't believe we live in a time where people post anime edits of the founding fathers because of hamilton" and imagine my dawning horror as i realized they think that's good. meanwhile, on my dash, andre 3000 shirt with 600 replies from the exact same naruto fans back in 2019 about how white privilege can't exist because their life is hard. and i'm having this fun discussion with someone who thinks a music industry boycott is going to help gaza somehow, which when i pointed out how they're not getting any traction because that's an absolute nonstarter, which neither the gaza boycott organization nor the musician's union have asked for, they said noooo i am clearly getting no traction because no one cares. this is not to say there's nothing cool in there because obviously there is but AUGH girl. help

Theatre Kid JJBA Part 5 AU Headcanons!

So, I don't know if anyone cares, but I have a thread about this on my twitter so I'm gonna share my headcanons I have about the GW cast in my funny theatre kid AU! I've got a few headcanons for every character. Some of these may conflict with canon, but whatever.

Giorno:

Baritone, can reach a bit on the higher side.

He's a mediocre singer and dancer but he's a very good actor! He prefers acting in stageplays to acting in musicals, BUT

he's a big fan of obscure musicals! Like, really obscure. Sometimes he invites people over to his house to watch shitty bootlegs with him.

He started theatre around his junior year of HS, pretty late.

Narancia

Tenor

Like Giorno, he's a mediocre singer, but he's a good dancer annd actor!

He did theatre since the beginning of middle school.

He specializes in comedic scenes, and his usual scene partner (when he gets to choose) for those is Mista.

He has a lot of trouble memorizing his lines. Sometimes Fugo makes him flash cards to help.

His favorite production was Newsies Junior, which he did in 8th grade.

Pretty alright knowledge of theatre, knows most contemporary stuff and a fair bit of classics, but doesn't like the classics that much.

"Lin-Manuel Miranda is a little bitch but Hamilton is honestly peak"

Trish

Mezzo-soprano

She's a triple threat, probably the most talented and skilled of the group.

Been doing theatre pretty much all her life.

Usually casted as a sweet female lead, but she wants more "mean" roles.

She doesn't go to the Denny's cast parties because they're too loud and her castmates are stupid.

Very knowledgeable in musicals, less so in plays, and prefers contemporary.

Definitely a Heathers girlie.

Fugo

Baritone

Very, very good singer. Serviceable actor and dancer, but he used to be a pretty bad dancer. It frustrated him a lot but he put a lot of work into it and now he's better!

Started doing theatre in his freshman year, but was trained in music since he was six, along with his academic pursuits.

He taught Narancia how to read music!

He can also play the piano.

Borderline encyclopedic knowledge of musicals (and plays too), prefers classics, mostly.

Favorite musical is Les Mis and he's very pretentious about it.

Mista

Baritone, but he has a pretty good (if not untrained) falsetto.

Really good at dancing and acting, just sorta okay at singing.

Bad at staying on beat though. Kind of a broken metronome.

Can't read music. He has Fugo record parts on his piano and send them to him.

Also specializes in comedy like Narancia

Always orders the Denny's steak at cast parties, always throws up.

Only knows popular contemporary musicals and a few famous classics.

His favorite musical is Be More Chill and people judge him for it (Fugo tells Narancia he can 'do better' than someone who thinks peak theatre is 'a musical where the first line is I'm waiting for my porno to load')

His dream role is Michael in BMC.

Bruno

Did theatre in HS, was very good at it. Star pupil type of deal.

He was a low baritone/maybe bass with a good falsetto (actually trained in using it)

He's since decided he'd rather direct and write because he likes being able to actually see the show he put so much work into live.

Sometimes he can be bossy and has very specific ideas of how he wants a scene to play out, which can annoy the actors.

Very good with music theory

Likes musicals with a lot of dance.

Abbacchio

Did theatre in HS with Bruno, was never super good at it. But sometimes he'd run tech when he wasn't casted.

Now, because he actually knows how to run tech and can teach other people, he's the stage manager for Bruno's productions.

He takes very good notes.

A bit bossy with the crew and kinda mean to the actors (but we love him it's fine)

Sits in a booth with Bruno away from the main table at cast parties. They just chat. And stare deeply into each others eyes like they're gay or something.

Pulitzer, to start with

you know, I feel like this was one of those moments where you side-eyed me and was like, “really, emme? really? you’ve got nothing? nothing at all?” until I admitted that I did, in fact, have headcanons for him. honestly, if that passive-aggressive-ness ain’t friendship, I don’t know what is. #friendshipislowkeybullyingandimhereforit #loveyousparkedblaze

so joseph pulitzer was obviously a real person. he was originally from hungary, and moved to the united states at age 17 as a recruit for the american civil war (“I was fighting in a WAR”). his family was wealthy, and his education consisted of mostly private tutors. when he immigrated, eventually ending up in st. louis, he brought none of that wealth, and didn’t speak even the smallest bit of english. he worked odd jobs, waited tables, and in his free time, studied. legend has it that while he was studying, he began making commentary about a nearby game of chess under his breath in german. unfortunately, the players spoke german. more fortunately, they took note of his intelligence, and offered him a job at a somewhat-prominent german daily newspaper. he accepted. 

four years later, joseph pulitzer had become a force to be reckoned with. he had successfully made a name for himself in the journalistic world, and bought his first newspaper in st. louis at 25. five years after that, he ventured to new york in search of a doctor for his health later than year, and ended up negotiating a deal for the new york world, which wasn’t doing well at the time. he was thirty. over the next decade, the world’s circulation grew to exceedingly great heights until it was the largest circulating paper in all of the united states. 

of course, these are just the highlights of his journalist career. I won’t go into detail about his political one. 

(…yeah. this man wasn’t someone you messed with. I have no idea why the newsies thought taking on him was a good idea, let alone how they won.)

and now for the fun stufffffffffff

he was the father of seven, yet katherine is the only kid mentioned in newsies??? and only the stage production??? my best guess about this is because she died at two, and so there’s not really much you could “get wrong” or offend people with (also, it reminds me of the using of philip and theodosia in hamilton, but that’s entirely besides the point). either way, what I’m saying the purpose of this was, regardless of the truth, is that THIS katherine also got sick young, but instead of passing away, she slowly got better through a very touch-and-go childhood. therefore, he’s ridiculously protective of her because that’s his daughter, dammit, and he’s not going to lose her now. 

something that I always noticed in livesies was how…american he was??? like, he brought up american football. I don’t know what’s more american than that. 

he just reminded me of every midwestern dad I’ve ever met, and I think that was somewhat intentional, so I’m rolling with it. I’m guessing the real joseph pulitzer was like this, too, so we can pretend it’s based in historical evidence. 

he goes out of his way to not act like an immigrant. this is pretty common, considering stereotypes, prejudice, and racism, but pulitzer was jewish, and very obviously so. this made his life that much more difficult, and it probably would have been easier to pretend that english was his first language and that he was as patriotic as they come. so he didn’t flaunt that he was an immigrant as well as a veteran, politician, and businessman. 

he would have never let his daughter become a journalist. or associate with someone like jack at all. just saying. 

I love how cutthroat they made him in the musical. realistically, he didn’t fight the newsies THAT much, but it’s really funny to me that this great business mogul was waging petty wars against literal children. 

he feels like he could be a surburban dad, flipping burgers and wearing a kiss the cook apron while his seven children run around in the backyard with a dog. I have no idea why. (someone draw that fanart for me PLEASE)

also, he named katherine after his wife, kate.

Alright this may come as a surprise to most of y'all but Newsies isn't actually my favourite musical, it's my second favourite.

My absolute favorite of all time has to be West Side Story. The music is perfect, the dancing is stunning, the costumes are always beautiful. The story is also pretty great and it just keeps getting more and more relevant as time goes on.

Second we have Newsies. I feel like I post a lot on this blog so you're probably very aware of how much/why I love this show.

Alright I don't actually have an ordered list after those two but here's some others that are definitely up there:

I watched Wicked for the first time ever about a month ago and it's quickly become one of my favorites. I'll admit it actually took quite a few listens for the music to properly dig itself into my head but now that it's there it's not gonna leave any time soon. No Good Deed is such a powerful song I love it so much and For Good actually made me cry.

In The Heights is absolutely brilliant (as is everything LMM creates) and unpopular opinion but I really enjoyed the movie and personally think it may even be better than the stage show. I really love story's set 1990's to late 2000's because they're like, modern enough (does that make sense) but not reliant on technology. The music is so amazing I love every single song in the show.

I fucking love Parade so much I have ranted to Fox about it way way too much and I cried happy tears when it won best revival at the Tonys this year. If I say anything else about it I won't be able to stop writing so I'll just say that I love it and leave it at that.

I am a Hamilton enjoyer and that is all I will say.

As far as other musical theatre, I'll be honest I haven't seen very many in person because of availability and cost (travel, etc, you know) so mostly I like the movie versions

BUT

Chicago, Hairspray, Burlesque, Into The Woods, Repo! The Genetic Opera, Little Shop of Horrors, Legally Blonde (stage version is better than the movie honestly), Wicked, RENT, Mamma Mia, Jesus Christ Superstar, Prince of Egypt, Beetlejuice, Book of Mormon, Annie (1982, I haven't seen the new one), Hamilton, Grease.....

I love so many. I have a playlist where I put together all of my favorite musicals on Spotify lmao

1. in plain sight yknow i feel like the government probably can't distinguish one giraffe from another so you just. you put a bunch of giraffes together and they won't ever know which one they were looking for

2. i would say a decent number because what if they're just hanging out. but saying that i also think half an owl would concern me quite a lot

3. not to be british or anything but paul hollywood really pisses me off like. no king making tasty bread does not make you better than everyone else

4. i would give a very long ted talk about the etymology of the english language and why it makes absolutely no sense

5. a swing, a ping pong table, and a very large television (with disney plus) (where else would i watch newsies)

6. oh my gosh i could ramble literally forever about the comparisons between the characters in romeo and juliet and the characters in west side story. but nobody ever wants to hear about it <//3 (i actually made a post about it at some point but i was totally holding back i just want to shout in someone's face about them). also french les mis vs english les mis. also who the main character of hamilton is (i have so many opinions on the fact that it isn't actually hamilton)

Hey! I know you didn't reply yet but I am very intrigued by your Barbie musical choices. I love that cast idea! Unfortunately I missed the movie again the other day but maybe I will see it the next week..idk. but I realized that I never told you my favorite musicals. So..my musical knowledge at first was from a lot of movie musicals..which I still love. Like I was familiar with Hairspray, Mamma Mia, Sweeney Todd and Rent..which are some of my favorites still cuz I'm so familiar with them. One of my absolute favorites is Sweeney Todd..and I know the show is better now but I still enjoy the movie. I was able to see Rent on tour which was better but I still enjoy the movie too. Then when I saw the Les Mis movie..I became obsessed with it and got more into Broadway because of it. But before that..I was familiar with a few songs from Wicked..and that was the first show I saw on tour so I still love it. Then I got really into Newsies and Jeremy Jordan for a while..and I think the musical is better than the movie..even if I saw the movie first lol. By this time..Hamilton had come out and I also loved that..but maybe not as much as other people..and 2016 was the first year I watched the Tony's. I enjoyed Waitress too. I also started watching old musical movies around that time..and just wanted to know as many musicals as possible..so West Side Story is one of my favorite movie musicals. La La Land had come out and I was obsessed with it..but Emma Stone is my favorite actress and her being in a musical was a dream come true. I know many people don't like it..but I did since it wasn't based on anything and reminded me of old musicals. Basically I like any musicals mostly..and don't really pick favorites between them. Unfortunately I haven't been as into Broadway as much lately for new shows but I try to see shows on tour. Hadestown on tour was really good and I hope you get tickets!!!There are a lot of cast recordings I haven't listened to yet. What are some of your favorite musicals? have you watched the barbie movie yet? i'd love to hear your thoughts — especially with my casting! a friend suggested gavin creel (especially with his current hair) as ken, and once that was suggested most things just fell into place! i was toying around with stephanie styles (or taylor louderman) for barbie, originally, but then once i got attached to the idea of gavin creel as ken, i knew i needed someone who i was confident could hold their own next to gavin, someone who was a strong actor (and a more subtle actor), among other things and i just really, really want meghann fahy to go back to theatre! i'm really happy for her success in tv (and i loved watching her in bold type, and will someday get around to watching white lotus for her and her alone), but i do miss her doing theatre. she just has such a beautiful voice, and i've loved her since her sam brown days! i think about her singing valentine by preston max allen, and her as riley in the we are the tigers concert all the time! a fun fact about me is that i've only actually seen the sweeney todd movie, and i've actually never seen rent! for some reason, i've had it in my mind that i should just hold out on seeing rent until i can see it in person, and the last time the tour was here in seattle i had bronchitis and wasn't up for seeing it. i'm hoping i can see it sometime soon! i love love love mamma mia, and i think it's just the perfect movie musical — and also a perfect musical! it is simply just so fun! my friends and i did a powerpoint night a few years ago, and her powerpoint was on potential mamma mia sequels (and i think she had like, eight different titles + plots picked out). as a les mis snob, i have a love hate with the les mis movie, but it also did pull me deeper into the world of musical theatre 🤍 newsies was the first show i saw on broadway and it'll forever have a special place in my heart (my first musical ever was annie!). and i do also agree that the newsies musical is much better than the movie! i have such a soft spot for it. i used to follow the tony awards religiously (and also just like, constantly check up on broadway grosses, etc.) but i don't anymore! waitress is another show that has a special place in my heart; it's tied for the show i've seen the most, actually! speaking of la la land, i just remembered they were hoping to adapt it for the stage — i wonder what happened to it, or if it's just fizzled out. the choreo in la la land is spectacular, and i was just talking to a friend a little bit ago about how paramour (the cirque show) did a la la land tribute back in the day! i also haven't been as interested in current shows on broadway, unfortunately! i'm hoping that something will speak to me soon, because i'd love to go back and see some shows. i know the notebook musical is transferring, and i wonder if the cast will stay with it! i saw the notebook musical last october in chicago, and i thought it was ... very weak, but the cast was incredible. i was particularly blown away by john cardoza (who i still maintain should be orpheus in hadestown someday; i love him), and joy woods! and yes — i managed to get hadestour tickets while on the plane to chicago, actually! i'm super excited to see hadestown again 🤍 some of my favorite musicals are: les miserables, waitress, sunday in the park with george, hadestown, deaf west spring awakening, newsies, once, an american in paris, come from away, alice by heart, ride the cyclone, venice, marie dancing still, we are the tigers, company, amélie! i'm sure i'm leaving something out too! i haven't been listening to a lot of newer cast recordings either; i've been meaning to listen to the sweeney one, actually but i might hold off till the entire thing is released! and i'm so excited for the new emily henry! it sounds so up my alley (i say, as if any of her adult romances haven't been up my alley)! i saw the cover got leaked and it's so pretty too — i just wish it was coming out in paperback, and not hardback!
