"Ditto" & "Melty Land Nightmare": Allegories for Idol/Fan Relationships.

TLDR: "Ditto" by Newjeans and "Melty Land Nightmare" by More More Jump are about the way parasocial relationships can be toxic to both fans and content creators (in this case, idols). While "Ditto" encourages fans to look outside of the escapism of K-pop for happiness, "Melty Land Nightmare," when covered by More More Jump, encourages idols to not sacrifice their own happiness and well-being simply to fulfill the heavy expectations of being an idol (i.e. bringing happiness to their fans).

"Ditto" is sung by Newjeans, a K-pop group known for their youthful charm and y2k aesthetic. The music video features the Newjeans girls as typical Korean middle school students, laughing and dancing and going to school until it is revealed, in the end, that they never existed. "Melty Land Nightmare" is by Harumaki Gohan, a Japanese VOCALOID producer whose songs have vague but intriguing storylines. This one is about an unhappy human girl (i.e. Blue Girl) struggling with nightmares and a half-human, half-baku girl named Melty who consumes her dreams and brings her comfort.

While "Ditto" is clearly about the parasocial relationship between idols and fans--with Newjeans encouraging their fans to enjoy real life instead of relying on the escapism of K-pop for temporary happiness--"Melty Land Nightmare" is not. I would argue that "Melty Land Nightmare" does not at all have anything to do with idols, actually, unless you play Project Sekai.

More More Jump, the cutesy idol group of Project Sekai, covers a wide range of Vocaloid songs, from uplifting ones like "Happy Synthesizer" to sadder ones like "Shoujo Rei." "Melty Land Nightmare" is a song that sounds pretty but, once you look at the lyrics, turns out to be kind of sad, much like another MMJ cover that I really love (i.e. "Patchwork Staccato").

When viewed in the context of More More Jump, "Melty Land Nightmare" has a similar tone to "Ditto": From the way Melty checks in with Blue Girl about her nightmares ("Did your mother say something to you? Was somebody in class cold to you?") to the way she holds the Blue Girl close, it is clear that Melty is a place of escapism for Blue Girl. Just like Ban Heesoo, the main character of "Ditto", would rather spend all her days recording videos of the Newjeans girls instead of living in reality, Blue Girl visits Melty every night to avoid real life. Both of these scenarios show that parasocial relationships, when taken to the extreme, can be unhealthy. This is why the Newjeans girls disappear at the end of "Ditto" - because they are just idols, just people, and they cannot be your reason for living.

"Melty Land Nightmare" is a fitting allegory for More More Jump because when Blue Girl disappears from Melty Land, having been cured of nightmares, Melty falls apart. She begs Blue Girl not to forget her as if she has no purpose now that Blue Girl is gone. Unlike the Newjeans girls' casual acceptance (and encouragement!) that they cannot be your reason to live, the MMJ girls struggle (at least initially) with not being your reason to live. From Haruka quitting ASRUN when she fails to save a teammate, Shizuku leaving Cheerful*days due to toxic competitiveness, and Airi being told she'll only make it big on variety shows, all three girls give up their dreams when they realize that they are not enough--not enough to save their Blue Girl, or worse, enough to save the Blue Girl but not enough to keep her around.

In our digital age, it's hard to not care about what people think. We are obsessed with the likes, comments, and reblogs on our posts, obsessed with being loved by strangers on the internet. While Haruka, Shizuku, and Airi's original purpose of being idols are noble (i.e. inspiring hope for others), it becomes convoluted due to the bureaucracy, politics, and jealousy of the idol industry. Plagued with imposter syndrome and guilt, these former idols stay disillusioned until they met their own idol: Minori, a former Blue Girl on a mission to become Melty. She inspires Haruka to become an idol again not by asking her to save someone else, but by showing her an ocean of blue, which reminds Haruka acutely of her original mission and how much she loves performing. And that, my friends, is how More More Jumps thrives: Outside of the system as freelance idols, where their mission is always clear, always real. Where bringing hope to others depends heavily on bringing hope to themselves.

New Jeans "DITTO" MVs analysis

or: how I fell in love with this group

I apologize in advance, but when I love something to such an extent I HAVE TO TALK ABOUT IT so here I am writing a massive post no one will ever read. If you do, kudos to you, and thank you.

(I actually had so many things extra to say, but I reached the limit of images allowed so I had to cut parts of it, but there are SO MANY INTERESTING DETAILS!!!)

Let me start by stating something: this is NOT a mystery, thriller, or horror kind of story. This is 100% a coming-of-age story.

I understand the vibes and some of the shots might hint at it, but that ain't it, sorry.

It is safe to say that this MV, or well, two MVs, have instantly become one of my all-time favorites.

The reasons are:

1) I'm a sucker for coming-of-age stories. I never get tired of it, I am 30 years old and I still cry like a baby over them. Love them.

2) The team behind it, the actors, the shots, the director, EVERYTHING works so well together it actually is insane to me how people in the industry are aiming for that level of quality sometimes.

I WILL TRY TO KEEP IT A REASONABLE LENGTH THIS WILL BE EXTRA LONG, I CAN'T KEEP IT SHORT, I HAVE A LOT TO SAY.

Let's start!

The main character in this story is Heesoo, a young student that we see more and less directly throughout both MVs.

The MV actually begins with her in the present, as an adult, opening a box with "memories" from the past, and starting a VHS of her past recordings.

Her POV is represented through the camera she holds through most of the MVs: this is important not only for the narrative but to actually understand the meaning behind what we're seeing.

When the reprise is in the retro, VHS style, it is what we see through her eyes; when we actually see wider shots with her in it, it switches back to neutral, HQ shots.

The story is shaped around a coming-of-age kind of narrative, which is a very popular trope we are experiencing among several K-pop groups, particularly within HYBE, with BTS in the past and TXT now.

Heesoo is introduced to us as a young girl in school, who loves to record all the time her group of friends while they have fun and they dance. While she is not necessarily represented as an outcast, it is clear that she might be a more introverted, shy personality, the one that loves to be "behind the camera" more than in front of it.

SIDE A

Heesol is the main character, and she is shown since the very beginning with a cast on her arm. In this MV, she is shown fully part of a group dynamic, with the girls directly involving her, smiling and talking to her, sharing makeup, and snacks during breaks at school, making jokes while running around both inside the school and outside, getting wet in the rain, writing on her cast. While we DO see parts of her perspective in daily life, the narrative is mostly shown from an external POV. The girls consider Heesoo part of the group, falling asleep all together, and in general experiencing all those youthful, happy moments a group of friends has while growing up.

Except, none of it is real.

The girls are not really there, and through the MV we finally get a glimpse of the reality: Heesoo was all alone the whole time, wishing for friends who would care about her, about her strugglings, about her thoughts and happy moments.

And her loneliness, her isolation, and her struggles have been invisible to everyone else in school, except this guy who keeps looking at her. And maybe because she does not understand why he is always watching her, she always turns the other way and stops the recording.

He might be her first youthful love, but in my eyes, he is also the first and only person who sees her struggles, and because of that he is very important in the story.

Before her waking up, showing us the truth about her loneliness, we see her dream of being in a winter landscape full of snow, with a fawn staring at her from the distance. This also comes with the reason that the scene is meant to have a symbolic meaning. The winter storm is her general feeling of loneliness and sadness, and the fawn represents herself. But there's more: a Fawn is widely recognized as a symbol and representation of youth and innocence, often tied with youthful, feminine representations.

She is in the middle of a winter storm, the storm being something negative in her real life, or simply her feelings, and she starts to see herself, her own youth, and her innocence.

She is growing up.

SIDE B

This is not an MV showing the same time but is in fact a continuation of the first one.

The MV starts pretty much with a similar shot we have seen in the previous one, except now we know the truth, and we notice the quick cuts that allow us to see beyond her camera, behind her fantasies. She is not recording her friends, cause they do not exist: we can actually catch some of her classmates looking at her with puzzled faces (cause they probably don't understand why someone is recording them doing nothing), and we also get glimpses of the empty halls that in her imagination were filled with New Jeans members running around freely.

We now see her alone on the roof; outside in the garden, she seems to be surrounded by her friends... Except they are not there, and when that same guy looks at her and SEES HER being alone, she realizes and runs away, not ready to face the reality. Not ready to come to terms with her feelings and pains.

But she can't run away forever (remember the dream from side A?), which is why we see her remember her time spent with her friends writing on her cast, only for her to realize that it never happened, her cast is all white and no one drew anything.

We also see her looking at five girls in a parking lot, in casual clothes, dancing to their song: this is to show that her longing for a group of friends actually comes from her sense of isolation. She wishes to fit in, to have friends caring for her, so she projects this on a group of strangers, young girls who she would love to see having fun with her.

Remember the whole premise about different kind of recording? We see clearly now that the shots with the girls on the roof are all from Heesoo POV, while the same shot from an external POV shows us her being all alone.

The camera and her shots, are all projections of the loneliness and struggles she is now forced to face. Which is why she tries to avoid it and throws her camera from the roof.

But she is, inevitably, growing up.

She is now fully aware, whether she likes it or not, that she is experiencing growing pains and struggling with new, unknown feelings, and she cannot rely anymore on her imagination and fantasy world.

She has to face reality. She now walks alone in the rain alone, without waiting for her friends, but she is now using the umbrella, she is caring about herself instead of running around and having fun. She is slowly developing a sense of responsibility.

Alone at home, she is once again facing reality. Part of her still wishes for a friend to call her on the cellphone (Minji, in this case), but she now knows it is not real, and so she is ready to let go. She does not pick up.

She is now looking the dawn right in the eyes, and it is staring right back at her for a long, important moment, before finally walking away, allowing her to let go of that youthful innocence and begin her walk toward adulthood, starting with someone at her side to grow up with, the guy we see her walk with (possibly her first love, but maybe just a friend... in any case, someone that for the first time made her feel SEEN, someone who CARED, who decided to STAY).

In the end, we came back full circle to the present, where adult Heesoo opens her box of memories of the past: she is now looking back at her struggles, at her pains shown in her recordings, while smiling. She recognizes now, that everything she went through served her to become the woman she is now, and she finally makes peace with her past. She finally smiles.

So what was the role of the members in the story?

They were, to put it simply, a projection of Heesoo's feelings, hopes, dreams, and fantasies she had in her youth.

Feelings she was not ready to leave behind to face adulthood... Until she was. Feelings, good and bad, that made her the woman she is in the present.

And isn't music a form of art? isn't art, in every sort of form, meant to express feelings, thoughts, and moments in life both good and bad? The girls provided the perfect soundtrack for this story, but by appearing and acting in the music video they also gave us a visual representation of the purpose of their own work.

They are here to grow up with the public and to show us all the spectrum of the emotions behind this beautiful moment in life.

(edit from future me, cause I really keep watching it and discovering new thoughts: it's not so much that the girls aren't real, they are, it's just that they are NOT the girls heesoo is portraying, they are a group of friends, classmates, that are very much real but probably not involved as much in heesoo's life. Friends who she wishes were closer to her to give her that supportive system and care she desperately needed at the time.)

(ALSO: the cast might or might not be a symbol of her pain, of her struggles she has to deal with, but this is just me overanalyzing everything.)

[AND ALSO!!! That single painted nail she has in the first MV, where we see her loneliness, might or might not be a not-so-subtle nod to the Polished Man Project, an international non-profit project born to raise awareness over violence against children, particularly to start a conversation over children traumas, their preventions and recoveries all over the world.

This project was born after the real life experience of Elliot Costello, co-founder of it, who came up with the idea for Polished Man after a visit to campaign beneficiary Hagar International in Cambodia. One evening, he met a young girl named Thea, who after playing naughts and crosses for hours, drew a heart on Elliot's palm and painted his nails (rings a bell??? Minji, who is the same girl she was painting Heesoo's nails, drew a heart on her cast with the nail polish).

Later, Elliot learnt how Thea came to be in Hagar's care - she was physically and sexually assaulted on a daily basis.

Elliot made the decision then and there to paint one nail to remember Thea, making it a symbol of the whole campaign.

This famous project has been discussed and promoted by several idols in the K-pop world, most noticeable ATEEZ' Hongjoong, IKON' Bobby, CIX' Seunghun, Wonho etc.]

this post may be implicit/common knowledge, but having not seen much discourse around the mechanics of batjokes' dynamic compels me to catalog. there's sm to unpack here, so excuse lapses in structure or flow.

first off and most importantly, joker's battle with bruce is an existential one, he wants to justify himself in the eyes of his maker, his reshaper, whose perpetual control and prowling enabled, and ultimately exposed, the failure of his veneer of heroism and ability/adeptness, and birthed a distillation of that failure. the failure to circumvent criminality and violence, continually indulging retaliative brutality and unresolved anger, edging catharsis in assuming a protective and dominant role as to compensate for his loss and pantomime vicarious past reclamation and authority. constantly stagnant, incessantly unfulfilled, an everlasting outburst if you will, addressing not his material conditions but feeding his metaphysical ones. joker moulds himself around bruce's worldview, concerning himself with the salvation eternally eluding bruce, achievable through the violence that birthed batman and reinvented joker in turn.

this is a dialectical affliction, one desperate in nature, to validate that he wasn’t a mistake, a deviancy, to prove that a singular, perhaps seemingly insignificant element can transform anyone, unchain them, and joker refuses alternatives because batman forever dances, is forever chained by both his insistence on normalcy, but also his neglect of it. joker wants foremost, to matter to his creator, to break perfunctory monotony and elicit true understanding and oneness, have his existence be purposeful and intentioned, proving himself worthy, the one that finally cracks the elusive figure and chiefly, achieves ordainment in the eyes of his saviour — embrace, his personhood returned to his creator’s hands as to ascend batman into godhood, inextricably coalescing them.

it’s a labour of love, devotion, joker truly loves THe BaTmaN, bleeds and lives and offers up gothamite sacrifices as to resuscitate his vacancy, bless him with unadulterated purpose, validate the meaningless of the earthly. ultimately, batjokes are cyclical, that: from ash you were birthed and to ash you shall return, sh1t. what confuses that however, is how dialectical they are (as aforementioned), they embody a yin & yang dynamic after all. however, ultimately, joker wants to birth the batman who laughs [like when you think about it — batman realizing joker's philosophy and transcending humanity], to eliminate bruce's restraint and contradictory morality as to, ironically, create a pure, militant reaper encompassing gotham's brutality and abandon. joker is fighting for gotham's soul in more ways than one, on the physical level — crippling its normative function, inundating it with senseless violence, and on a metaphysical level, fighting for its symbol of order and constraint, someone who arose as an abstract embodiment of gotham's institutional enforcement, a distillation of authoritative fear, gotham’s punitive restrictiveness, the abstraction of otherworldly, insurmountable power, an inverted reflection of the very thing bruce is and was unable to overcome, aiming to strip them of their defences as to coax their primality, a violent denuding as to be sculpted anew, the same enlightenment he was afforded. to be broken so thoroughly that you become pure. to shatter pretence and baptize gotham, or its seemingly intractable moral paragon, in hedonistic freedom, uniting them with his gory rebirth. and joker, with this hedonistic perspective, recognizes that capacity in batman, recognizes it as his truth as one who was born from that brutality and violence and continues to endure it, seeing it as the purest form of expression and the underlying nature of existence.

he glamorizes his own death at the hands of the one who rebirthed him bc it will rebirth his creator in turn, allowing him to fully embody his godhood. it will afford the joker true meaning — once again my metas coming back to the struggle for existence but universal themes gonna universe [with the melody] — however, bc of the dialectics of batjokes, the struggle is a testament to their bond, it’s a seduction, a courtship, its authenticity and potency dictated by scale and intensity (aka their Stockholm is mad), the commitment to enduring joker’s forcible conversions, and foremost, to joker martyring himself to batman’s perpetual aggrieved ministrations, the irony in trying to fix someone through cruelty, conflict everlasting in one’s subjugating machinations. the more joker seizes, the further his cost sinks. bruce becomes steadily entrapped with and by the one person who can never leave him, the magnitude of those around him continually strained against the joker, the onus to humanize a sadistic, inhumane murderer forever ballooning. joker’s mortality, his humanity becoming further pathologized, his undying ceaselessness a type of consolation, a mark on bruce’s own consciousness, to save the one person forever bound to him, justifying his heroism and the incongruity between them, the fundamentalist moral dividing them: do not kill. batman's consideration, thusly, is birthed from a deep resentment, the flagellation of abstinence, maintaining the one thing delineating human from unfeeling instrument [of violence]. that resentment festering into a neurotic sort of dependency, joker acting as his NorthStar of morality, subsuming his sense of self, entrancing and ensnaring him. without the joker, batman is slowly cannibalized, unable to exist. whatever, i’m tired. this better be good enough cause its going up either way.

encompasses batjokes perfectly. the eternal struggle, the damned position and conundrum batjokes find themselves saddled with, their respective lives being their sort of penance, an inability to ever truly connect without eliminating the other, love transmorphed into a twisted, destructive passion disinterested in its untainted iteration and consequently further estranging them.

INTRO:

I decided for after my huge hiatus from this account to post about ditto. Ditto is a beautiful song which is supposed to hit you straight from first listen. I did feel upset and hurt after watching both of the music videos. However, many people have been going on about theories about the music video of Ditto. Because it may seem sad but there seems to be dark aspects behind it. In which I will talk about later.

CONTEXT:

I want to clarify that there is a Korean (I think) movie (or series) that is called Ditto. The plot is that this boy from the year 2000 is able to communicate by an amateur radio with a girl that was in the school in 1979. A hand cast is mentioned in the movie in which the girl in 1979 signs on one of her boyfriends that are in hospital. After the girl realises that the boy's parents are her friends, a bit too close, and she's in love with the "Dong-hee" the boy's father. She realises that she felt bad and broke up with him, as they were in a relationship beforehand. Then the boy decides to find this girl but he doesn't recognise him. In the end, the radio stops working and all communication is lost between them and they continue on their lives.

Obviously, with this context in mind the music video makes a lot more sense. However, there are still many raised questions even knowing this. The most obvious, why two different music videos? One in which she decides to stay with them (being NEWJEANS) and the other being to go away from them and moving on?

MEANING BEHIND:

I personally don't think this has anything to do with the fandom. Many people say different things about what the meaning behind the music and music video. It's about loneliness in youth, it's about youth, it's about romance, it's about moving on from traumatic events, or traumatic events will still haunt you, some even say that this putting attention to bullying when not knowing what is going on in someone's head. These all are very valid. But really, what is the meaning or should I say purpose of this? Is there something we should be aware of.

HANNI:

My main question is that of the character of Hanni in the music video. Why is it that (majority of the time) whenever the camera goes towards her or focuses on her the camera glitches? An examples below:

Hanni is the only one that is glitching out in the group.

Another scene I have a lot of questions about... (This is after the camera is thrown in Side B mv)

She is the first to be shown after it is broken...

And the last to be shown staring at the camera...

Is she a significant character in the plot, she is wearing the same uniform as the girl in the video, yet the other members are wearing grey uniforms. Is this of any significance?

Also this...

THE FEMALE DEER:

What is the female deer supposed to symbolise, coming in the end of both music videos... In the end? At the same time? Why? Is there a reason?

CONCLUSION:

There are so many questions to be raised by this music video and majority are unanswered.

This may just be me because I'm a reveluv and the lore in Red Velvet is huge and very interesting and I find these difficult to understand. I feel like there is something much darker in this music video. I think the innocence that plays in this music video, in which played with our emotions is supposed to throw us off the scent of the danger in the music video that is presented. Something far more sinister...

newjeans ditto analysis, theories and thoughts: about parasocial relationships in kpop, loneliness, emotional bonding and the desire to have mutual love with someone.

first of all, i want to clarify that i don’t believe in a “literal” theory and i think they wanted to metaphorically or symbolically represent a feeling or something more abstract (i’ll explain this in detail) so i’ll be analyzing that! (mv elements and what they might symbolize). 

however, tokkis have made so many interesting theories that are worth considering. here’s some of them:

1. newjeans are ghosts

2. newjeans are hallucinations of heesoo

3. newjeans and heesoo are friends but they got into an accident and only heesoo survived (and that’s how her arm broke)

now, my opinion and what i am going to explain in this post, is that ditto is about parasocial relationships in kpop, loneliness, emotional bonding and the desire to have mutual love with someone.

i will be explaining point by point why i do think this.

1. the meaning of “ditto”: 

the word ditto means “the same thing again”, a repeat - as when you agree with something somebody else just said. it means “in the same manner” and it’s used to express mutual feelings.

 ditto = “so am i”, “me too”.

this same thing is expressed through the lyrics:

“do you want somebody like i want somebody? you smiled at me but do you think about me now?”

“i want you so, want you, so say it ditto”

“say it back, oh, say it ditto”

it seems like the narrator of the song desperately looks for feedback from another person and wants to be sure that the feelings are mutual. “do you want somebody like i want somebody?” this narrator (may be heesoo, but again, i don’t believe that it’s literally heesoo but what she represents. i’ll talk about this later) feels lonely and wants someone to finally have a meaningful connection.

2. the deer: 

quoting what minji said about the deer, “you know the deer that appears in the mv? this is something we say in the album too, but with our deer friend we tried to represent that odd distance between someone you want to approach but can’t fully and that can stand for various relationships.”

every time we see the deer, heesoo is watching it from afar. this can represent, as minji said, how it is wanting to reach someone emotionally but not being able to. this scene is so sad since they focus heesoo’s and the deer’s eyes; eye contact creates a heightened sense of emotional intimacy. “the eyes are the window to the soul” is the idea that you can understand a person’s emotions by looking into their eyes.

what i personally think about the deer (theory):

minji said “that can stand for various relationships” and i think it could possibly mean a parasocial relationship between idol and fan. heesoo has a romantic interest which is the boy who always stares at her so it could also mean the distance between them and her fear of wanting to get close to him or her one-sided love.

but what made me think that the deer could represent newjeans as idols and heesoo as the fans is the side b mv. for me, side b is about heesoo becoming independent and distancing herself from newjeans (her friends, or maybe her beloved idols) and starts to live in the real world. i’m going to mention everything i think about side b later, now back to the deer.

side a: heesoo is happy with newjeans, she’s living a dream with them and they’re best friends. the scene with the deer in this mv is calm, even though she’s still watching it from the distance, her eyes doesn’t show any negative emotion.

this scene appears after heesoo was shown sleeping next to newjeans and after the deer appears, she suddenly wakes up alone. the deer was like a reminder that everything was a lie and the truth is that newjeans have always been afar from her and what they had was not real.

side b: heesoo is avoiding newjeans and she tries to live her life without them. the moments they previously shared together are no longer the same as it was in side a; heesoo is alone and apart from newjeans.

the scene with the deer is so important. considering that she’s distancing herself from them, the eye contact with the deer is very sad. it’s like a goodbye because after it the deer leaves and heesoo’s eyes are almost with tears.

the deer leaves right after a scene of heesoo walking with her romantic interest, the boy. which may mean that newjeans left her after she was able to create a real relationship like she always wanted so she no longer needed them.

3. heesoo: 

like i said earlier, i believe heesoo symbolizes newjeans fans: tokkis.

the general producer min hee-jin said, “the music video for the pre-released song ditto (...) contains an unexpected story unfolded by bunnie’s (official fan club name) and newjeans. a surprise cameo appearance (...)”

heesoo can actually represent anyone who is so lost in their loneliness that they seek coping mechanisms like daydreaming. but this thing is very common in parasocial relationships, especially in kpop.

4. the boy: 

the boy can be not necessarily heesoo’s romantic interest, i feel like he symbolizes the real world, real relationships. he always stares at her but she avoids him, although it’s noticeable she also wants to get closer to him, which can symbolize the fear of intimacy and denial of the real world. she knows he’s there (she knows there are possible relationships waiting for her, but she ignores it).

5. the camera: 

heesoo is always recoding newjeans with her camera. she never joins to what the girls are doing, she just watches them through the camera which makes her only a watcher. but she seems happy even if she is not part of it, she keeps the memories in her camera.

6. the pinky red nail: 

i was struggling trying to understand the meaning of this since heesoo’s little finger was still painted red even when newjeans were gone. if it was all her imagination, how did they painted her nail? could she have painted it herself? could be. but is it a coincidence that the color is red?

what i personally think about the nail (theory):

maybe i’m just overthinking but it reminded me of the legend of the red string of japan. according to this myth, everyone’s pinky finger is tied to an invisible red string that will lead them to their soulmate.

even when newjeans aren’t with heesoo, her painted nail symbolizes she’s not alone as she thinks and someone is waiting for her outside, in the future, she only has to go out and find it.

i don’t think the main message is that she have a soulmate waiting for her but the fact that she doesn’t need newjeans to feel loved. she can still find mutual love with someone else.

7. the gray cat: 

gray cats are a symbol of independence and the power of independent people. they help people who are working through co-dependency to find true happiness in themselves.

the gray cat makes its appearance in side a’s mv, when heesoo is still very much dependent on newjeans. i think this means that newjeans also helped heesoo to find her happiness and become independent.

8. side b mv a parallelism:

side b shows us that what heesoo was seeing was not really real but if you pay attention, side b’s is also about heesoo starting to be independent of newjeans. she even breaks the camera, which was important in her relationship with newjeans. we can see a scene where minji calls her and she doesn’t answer the phone, she’s choosing not to get involved with newjeans, and maybe that’s why she doesn’t see them anymore.

and the most important thing: parallel scenes to side a.

if in side a we see how the girls write on his broken arm, in side b her cast is clean.

if in side a she’s walking with them under the rain, in side b she’s walking alone with her umbrella.

(i wanted to put every single parallelism but the post is already long so i will just mention those but there are so many! or details like heesoo seeing newjeans dance from afar and then looking at her clean cast, newjeans hugging heesoo in side a then in side b they are all hugging without heesoo, and more)

it’s everything what her life would be like if she no longer depended on them and started living her life. and she even gets to talk to the boy, like i explained earlier.

8. the present and the past:

i haven’t figured it out this yet but there are transitions between present and past. i don’t know if side a is the past and side b is what happens next, i don’t know if it’s a linear story but time is definitely weird.

something curious: a deer crossing your path is a reminder to check in with yourself to make sure you are not living in the past or in the future, and to realign yourself back to the present moment.

and

side b mv loops back to side a mv, the end of side b is the start of side a.

Young Posse - XXL

I absolutely loved this EP, I don’t even know what else to say. I liked the sound, I was impressed by their vocals, I thought the feature was really good, the title track is obviously awesome. It’s interesting though, because the sound is kind of similar to Illit, but I think Young Posse just did it better somehow. I don’t really know how to explain the difference. Like, when Illit do it, it feels like they’re trying to be cool. When Young Posse do it, it feels like they are cool. Plus the title track gives a lot more legitimacy to the album. I do wish there was a bit more rap on the album, but then again, we got a ton of rap in Macaroni Cheese, so in terms of their discography as a whole (all two EP’s) this is a reasonable shift for an album.

Average score of 8.8, but I liked it a lot, so imma round up to 9.0.

- I’ve already seen XXL and I absolutely loved it. Very excited to hear the rest of the album. This is immediately after I heard Illit, so let’s see how it is.

Hello there!

Category is: BTS and Hybe and their relationship in the future.

There are a lot of opinions on Twitter about that. And this being Twitter: I always approach opinions and information there carefully.

My main concern: will Hybe properly protect BTS and support them, even when they're less reliant on them?

Hybe already seems to put a lot of effort into promoting other groups and projects. And that's totally understandable. Being so dependent on one group is not good from their perspective (stock investors probably want to see a wide range portfolio, because they need to see consistency and reliability).

I might be a bit cynical in regards to this, because of my experience at work. But I've seen people (including myself) being dropped like a hot potato when it was convenient, without any regard or care for the achievements, blood, sweat and tears I or others have put in.

And at the end of the day: it's still the KPop industry.

BTS is getting so much shit from all sides and the vultures are always waiting for the right moment. With all BTS has done for Hybe, I don't want the people in suits to turn this into a cold "cost-benefits" analysis.

I hear your concern, and on some level I understand it.

But, I’ve got to give the guys some credit. They are intelligent capable men who have walked into this industry a 2nd time with their eyes wide open. I suspect the reason you’re sending me this ask is tied to NewJeans’ recent performance (and so is a non-issue), but regardless I'll answer your main question which is to say I don’t know if HYBE will protect and support BTS when HYBE is less reliant on them. I don’t know if that will happen. But I do know nobody has pondered that possibility more than BTS themselves. Personally, I feel we as fans should never forget that we’re just fans and only occasionally know more than those right in the middle of it. BTS are the people most impacted if such a thing were to happen, so they must be prepared for it - this is a view that makes sense to me given what I believe their characters to be.

BTS might very well choose to leave BigHit/HYBE and/or start their own thing, but I doubt the reason would be any sort of neglect from HYBE or favoritism or anything of the sort. BTS are still very much the money-makers in HYBE – you’re seriously underestimating ARMYs’ spending capacity if you doubt that for the next 8 months at least. I also want to point out that while Ador has wisely used HYBE’s investment to distinguish NewJeans from their peers and much of the industry, most of that group's success just boils down to ‘simple, good music’. That the girls don’t try too hard in an industry notorious for overkill and outlandish displays of shock-factor is refreshing, mature, calming/vibey all at the same time. It's addictive to just about anyone.

No k-pop company will say no to more profits and so it makes no sense to me for HYBE to malign their primary money-makers i.e. BTS. Just practically speaking. So I believe your fear is unfounded, though I could be wrong. I also doubt NewJeans, even with how cute and talented they are, can change this.

• i can aisha enjoying k-pop mainly for the performances! so i chose serendipity, black swan, and wave, which are all contemporary dances i believe? in here, aisha meets anne, her first friend who taught her dance, and described it as “freedom.” i believe anne is doing ballet there? the songs i chose are all elegant (?), which is an aspect aisha doesn’t embrace. however, i chose the songs because i feel like it somewhat ties back into anne? ok also i picked these because these are very gorgeous performances + i love how emotional? these dances are

- as for the song meaning, it’s actually the opposite of what aisha believes in. serendipity, is feeling that you’re fated to be with someone. as for black swan, is the fear of losing your passion for music. however, i find wave to be fitting!!because it’s the desire for freedom from your busy life

• run bts is such a fun performance oh my god. on the contrast, i can see aisha enjoying a lot of energetic songs while exercising.

• here is a clip of aisha dancing, she’s mostly posing a lot in between! so, i thought of FEARLESS & ANTIFRAGILE by LE SSERAFIM, both tracks about achieving your goal & of encouragement, fitting for aisha! :)
