I made this note a few months ago when initially rewatching this season: (while watching these few episodes I genuinely had so much fun!! I’ve only watched season 1 once, so this is my first time rewatching it, and man does it feel nice to not only be able to understand most of it (a huge upgrade since last time lol), but also have it feel like a new show since I don’t remember this season at all!! all in all, I’m having so much fun doing this c:)

Journey to the West (2012) 西游记
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Director: Zhang Jianya Screenwriter: Gao Dayong / Lang Xuefeng / Huang Yonghui / Liu Yi Starring: Wu Yue / Nie Yuan / Zang Jinsheng / Xu Jinjiang / Wang Jiusheng / Liu Tao Genre: Action / Fantasy / Adventure / Costume Country/Region of Production: Mainland China Language: Mandarin Chinese Date: 2012-01-30 (Mainland China) Number of episodes: 60 Single episode length: 45 minutes Also known as: New Journey to the West / 西遊記 / 新西游记 / Journey to the West 2011 IMDb: tt2240929 Type: Retelling
Summary:
The new version of "Journey to the West" won unanimous praise from the audience with its new special effects production and unique and profound plot interpretation. The show used Hollywood-style special effects to create effects that the old version of "Journey to the West" failed to achieve. The producer Ma Zhongjun once Revealed: "We invested more than 100 million, most of which went to the stunt team." In order to let the audience experience the "generous" effect of domestic TV series, producer Zhang Jizhong specially edited a condensed movie version for this screening event.
According to Zhang Jizhong, the chief producer of the new "Journey to the West", the reason why the new "Journey to the West" has entered the audience's attention with such a high profile is actually to spread the culture of "Journey to the West" again. The reason why he chose to re-shoot "Journey to the West" was because he wanted to use this version of "Journey to the West" to reflect and convey the unique and charming essence of Chinese Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism in the original "Journey to the West", and this selected editing. The movie version of "Journey to the West" is also another inheritance of Journey to the West culture.
The reason why the 2011 large-scale mythological and magical masterpiece "Journey to the West" is called the new "Journey to the West" is that compared with the old version of "Journey to the West" filmed by CCTV in 1986, the total investment of the new "Journey to the West" exceeds 100 million. The whole drama is faithful to the original work to a great extent while adding a lot of computer stunts. It is known as the Chinese version of "The Lord of the Rings".
The new version of "Journey to the West" is currently being broadcast on local TV stations in Beijing. The mystery of Sun Wukong, played by Wu Yue, has also been unveiled. His straightforward, cute, witty and humorous, competitive, and humane interpretation has been well received by the audience. The most exciting part of the new version of "Journey to the West" is that it focuses on showing the essence of the original work, that is, the growth of Sun Wukong, using a more humane way to show his innocence, invasion of evil spirits, inner wrestling, putting aside his inner demons, and finally returning to his true nature. The free process is also the biggest difference between it and previous versions. In the parts that have been aired, the familiar scenes such as the birth of the stone monkey, the apprenticeship, and the havoc in heaven have appeared one by one. The aggressive and ignorant impulses of the "rebellious period" have resonated with many viewers.
"This is an expression of Sun Wukong's human nature. The old version of Sun Wukong has been recognized by generations as a classic. I am not trying to surpass or break through it again, but I hope to perform different parts. I think this version of Sun Wukong is very good in performance. The biggest difference is the humanity." said Wu Yue, who plays Sun Wukong. In addition, Zhu Bajie played by Zang Jinsheng, Tang Seng played by Nie Yuan, and Sha Wujing played by Xu Jinjiang also have new performances.

one dragonball hater vs three fans [NJTW S1 E3]
in this episode Hodong is EXPOSED for his non-existent knowledge of Dragon Ball. Also he protests about the entire concept of using dragon balls lol. please enjoy! ‎♡‧₊˚‎
공중파 - public TV network, (airwaves)
거치다 - pass, go through (usually a period or some circumstances)
목적지 - destinatination
산만하다 (산만한) - distracted, unfocused, vague
초딩 - a slang word kinda, meaning "an elementary school kid", (used a lot jokingly, to call someone or their preferences childish, meaning is light-hearted and not offensive)
비글 - someone, who has a personality, similar to a beagle! this person is playful and kind (inspired by this word I'm actually working on a whole post about different dog breed personality types, find it here)
도저히 - possibly, completely (used a lot just for enhancing the existing meaning)
진도 - progress (usually used in phrases where the word progress is implied and not translated directly, like "it's not going well", "it's coming along nicely"),
자료화면 (자료 화면) - data screen
대체하다 - to substitute
…나라 - used for term “dynasty”, so Han Dynasty -> 한나라
화제 - topic (화제가 되다 - to become the talk of the town)
두고 오다 - to leave behind (the structure of this is really fun, the direct meaning is "put" + "come", so instead of saying you forgot something, you divide it into two actions, first putting it somewhere and then arriving without it)
판씩 - 판 seems to be a counter word like 개, 마리, 명 etc, meaning "round"/"edition"; the grammar 씩 means "each"
최종 - final, the last (more about particle 최 here)
난생처음 (난생 처음) - for the first time in life
오로지 - only, nothing but (seems to be similar in use to 일뿐)
벼락치기 - hasty preparation, (used a lot with studying & exams , has a slightly different translation of cramming)
멀쩡하다 - unaffected, intact, in perfect shape
혼동 - confusion, (used in forms 혼동이 오다, 혼동에 빠져 있다)
쏟아내다 (쏟아낼 예정) - pour out, burst, spill out (grammar ㄹ 예정 means something is expected)
오덕 & 덕후 - nerd, (actually comes from Korean spelling of "otaku")
근사하다 - great, wonderful
신묘한 - mysterious, magical (this went on to be a name for the njtw's mascot♥️)
귀하다 (귀한) - precious, priceless
구슬 - bead, ball (something with a round shape)
성구 - (not important at all, so feel free to skip! translated to "prayer, phrase" but I'm still confused as to why it was used with the description of dragonballs...)
소원을 들어주다 - to grant a wish
파괴되다 - be destroyed
흔한 - commonplace, familiar
인증 - verification, conformation
당췌 - (my best guess is that it's a form of 도대체, "exactly/really" with sub-meaning "even", eg "도대체 뭐 하는거야?", "what exactly are you doing?")
물러가다 - leave (but fancy), retire from (in terms of leaving a place)
어그로 - "agro" or agression, (also seems to be used as a slang for interntet trolls? yk cause of "orge")
반발하다 - oppose, resist
악당 - villain
정모 - a regular get-together (not used that often it seems)
소외감 - feeling of alienation, being left out
진행하다 - to lead (especially a tv show, like a host does) (also to progress, to head to)
려고 들다 (하려들어) - an upgraded version of a grammar 려고 하다, where the user is even more determined to do something, watch the explanation here (in part 려고 the syllable 고 sometimes can be omitted)
협상능력 - negotiation ability
봉쇄 - blockade
당하다 - grammar that means, that someone suffered because of someone else, eg "이혼했다" - "I divorced" VS "이혼 당했다" - "I suffered a divorce" (meaning that the speaker didn't want this to happen)
본사 - headquarters
나서다 - interfere, set out, go with a purpose
힘 합치다 - cooperate, work together (literally "to put strength together")
굉장히 - very, extremely
전용 - exclusive, privat, only (used a lot in phrases like "resident-only area" etc)
혜택 - benefit
위엄 (세워주다) - dignity
넉넉한 - generous, plentiful
경비 - expense
제외 - exemption (제외하다 - to be exempt)
대충 하다 - to do something sloppily, to half-ass something
..에 육박 - to approach, be close to
상.하 - top and bottom
내복 - underclothes
(words in purple are given in their pure form, how they were said/written in the episode, I might also be providing the full form, a form that's used more often etc.)

Hi! When you said that Sophie “learned about the golden headband and THAT led Wukong to almost kill Sophie”, what do you mean exactly? Did she learn the tightening spell or had made Trip use the spell? Saying that he almost wanted to kill her is terrifying, what was the reason?!
Tumblr media
Okay, so what I meant by learning about the golden headband is that when Wukong was saying mean things about Sophie and the situation that the gang is in right now by taking someone who was not sent by Guanyin (at least that's what Wukong thought. In reality it was Buddha AND Guanyin decision to bring her). Pigsy said that the Tripitaka would use the headband spell if the monkey couldn't behave jokingly. Sophie can't use that spell herself nor does she even know how to say it and even if she does, it won't work. So when Sophie and Wukong argued Sophie felt braver to say what was on her mind because she trusted that Tripitaka would keep the monkey in control. In reality, what she said was because she was angry with Wukong's mean attitude and she was scared. She didn't mean to call him a 'disgusting creature'. It was out of fear, frustration, and anger and she didn't know what Wukong was! She didn't understand what was going on and because the stone monkey didn't make her feel any better by his mean attitude it just made her feel scared more. When Wukong was close to deciding to teach her a lesson (that would definitely kill her bc in anger Wukong sometimes forgets how fragile humans are) Tripitaka stopped him. Wukong on the other hand wasn't happy about his situation either. It was 'okay' but getting dragged into this mission pretty much against his own will in order to pay back his crimes didn't make him happy. He already had his own arguments with Tripitaka and morals. Now this human woman had the guts to call back at him! He is Sun fucking Wukong! The monkey King! No one talks back at him like that! It wasn't his problem that she was lost. Should have taken better care of herself! That's at least what he was feeling mostly. But he wasn't nice to her either! He called her stupid for getting lost in the first place. Telling her to go somewhere and fix her problems by herself and gang (aka. Wukong) doesn't have time nor care to help her if she doesn't have anything valuable to give back. He was almost 'forgiving' her attitude to a King until she called him a disgusting creature. That pissed him off because the last time someone commented on his appearance in a negative way was the Heaven's Palace servant girls at the peach garden. So yeah! Not a great start! But thank god something like this didn't happen after that! Sophie, after they were in peace to the point that they could talk normally without Tripitaka guarding, apologized for what she said and she didn't mean to say those horrible words. Wukong on his end didn't apologize at least verbally but he did start to be a little bit nicer to her. Hell, he even shared one of his fruits with her as an apology bc it was how his mother taught him.
