TOP THINGS I'M EXCITED FOR IN THE NEW RTD RUN
getting the obvious out of the way, ncuti gatwa
but more specifically, ncuti gatwa is going in with such an exciting awareness of what he got out of doctor who and how that will inform his take
and both he and millie gibson are firmly taking doctor who into the next generation. I don't know a lot about her (and youknow, I'm getting older, so she seems awfully young, but that's really all I know and isn't enough to form an opinion on -- but susan vibes? hoping she won't be a rose!repeat, but I really really don't think that's the intention here), but gatwa is also next!gen whovian (like me), which is very fun. it's a nerdy show, I like it when nerds are involved
the wardrobe is looking so goooood. three also had quite an extensive repertoire especially, and this feels quite closely aligned with that campness (not specifically the exact style ofc, new doctor, but Vibes)
the other obvious out of the way, dtennant and catherine tate
specifically that there's a lot of potential in the 60th anniversary to properly wrap up ten's and donna's arcs in a way that organically interacts with the previous ending they had. some really fun potential to play with theme and genre in that, I'm a sucker for recontextualisation, and for dtennant having a bad time (but then maybe at the end... an okay time?)
I hope this will also more effectively merge the rtd run with moffat's and chibnall's. they did do a bit more of that as they went along, but I think they both went too hard on the reset button (especially moffat). we did then get some more... what I'll call continuity, but it took a bit (look, I know, the continuity is madness on this show, but I like to know it's the same story at least, and not totally excise what came before)
also donna has a kid now, played by yasmin finney. I'm excited for all of that, the fact that she's called rose, casting yasmin finney, another form of bringing it into the present, rather than it being all about the past, the fact that she's teased in the trailer, but there's so much more to see
speaking of casting -- camp and queerness! so many of the casting announcements have been queer actors, and you know rtd loves queering shit up, and he's got soooo much more freedom to do so now than he did in 2005. It won't just be in the casting, it'll be in the stories and the character-writing
references to classic!who and other dw!materials, as always, and of course rtd loves that. I just like how much of nu!who is having fun with classic!who. and updating it of course
I said it before but. I like watching dtennant be upset. he does it very well. perhaps even tears who knows...
EDIT: CONSIDERING THE NEW THEME SONG REVEAL ALSO FORGOT TO SAY MURRAY GOLD'S MUSIC!!!
some things I'm hoping for:
that the continuity of the last series won't be severed, especially in regards to the various regenerations that have been since ten
similarly that ten's arc interacts both with how they died/what happened with donna, and that they've been other bodies since then and so there has been growth and change, but what does that mean to a multi-lifed being?
that ruby and the doctor won't have a romantic will-they-won't-they and that generally the doctor continues to be a character through which those sorts of things can be interrogated (perhaps more deliberately now than in the past....)
that there will be some more ideas about gender, as has been increasingly played with over the last few years
that ncuti gatwa being black influences the kinds of stories being told in regards to what kind of history and future is important
that rose's part in the specials is important (I mean, even the fact that she's donna's kid is already important, but on her own as well -- that she gets something cool to do)!
that UNIT won't be toooo involved. I'm currently watching three from the start and I remember that UNIT does a lot in that one, and that's fine, I get that there's precedent. but also they're not my favourite part of DW, generally the doctor being associated with Institutions of a military nature. makes sense for three, who's relatively trapped on earth, and I like the way it's one of humanity's ways of reacting to alien life both in classic and nu!who, but never trust military. anyway, UNIT's fine for the specials, also ties in previous seasons with kate, but hoping won't be so much in ncuti gatwa's arcs. or that there's more conflict involved with them being involved
that new writers are brought onboard, especially women, black writers, and millennials
that it'll still be sincere. that it won't suffer from irony poisoning and over-reliance on references (don't think the latter is so much the issue), and that the bigger budget won't erode its ability to tell deeply personal intimate person stories, which has been an issue over the last few years and could be a problem in future. this isn't the show of massive explosions and michael by action, it's the show or a bunch of nerds who want to see practical effect aliens and cry about them

Thinking about how I would rework silver eyes and honestly I think itd be cool and fun to just lean further into the Sharingan comparison and give it actual stages of progression, instead of it being an all-or-nothing thing that in turn mandates that Ruby has to be completely incompetent at using it in 80-90% of situations, or else the conflict would be over.
So in my AU, it has ten stages. (Nine, in general practice. The last is more of a mythical/worldbuilding thing that probably isn't real.)
Each stage both unlocks a new thing it can do, and can improve what you've unlocked in previous stages. (In DnD terms, kind of like getting the choice to perform a basic spell at a powered-up higher level) Each stage is mastered with training, and you cannot unlock the next if your mind and Aura aren't strong enough. But each time, either intense emotion, or a sort of "epiphany" moment of self-actualization, is still needed as the "final trigger" to progress to a new stage.
All of its abilities are a form of "magic", and do not directly use Aura, but still tie into it. Instead, the eye abilities accumulate "Tarnish", a new cost for the ability. Its only remedy is time and rest. Tarnish is lasting strain upon the user's mind and soul, chaotic dissonance in their Aura that causes the user's maximum Aura capacity to progressively weaken the more they use these. Along with this, the user's emotions become increasingly dulled. High Tarnish also causes physical pain, tingling, numbness, and has additional, increasingly worse effects on consciousness, critical thinking, and motor function.
However, the Tarnish generated by lower stages of the eyes is minor, generally dissipating over time faster than it builds up. Still, Tarnish always dissipates much slower than Aura can recharge. Past a critical point, it no longer dissipates at all. If one stops just before this point, it can still take over a month to fully recover, and will leave you effectively unable to do anything Aura-based for several days.
After the critical point, the user becomes an emotionless and powerless husk. Forever.
This in turn is actually perfect for the creation of Salem's Hounds. A fully Tarnished being results in a more powerful Hound than any alternative. The reason why is not well understood. Anyway!
Stages: Part 1: Pre-Beacon Unlocks
Stage 1, Ward: Cannot do harm. Weak Grimm recoil from the light, but the range only extends a few meters from the user.
Awakening Trigger: Ruby learning of her mother's death as a small girl.
Stage 2, Stun: Immobilizes and overwhelms the senses of weaker Grimm for several seconds, and also causes mild burns. The light is also disorienting for normal, non-supernatural reasons against humans at close range.
Awakening Trigger: Bullying at Signal (Cliche, but I really want a better actual reason why Ruby starts out awkward and self-conscious, and of where she picked up the idea that she'd prefer to be "normal".)
Stage Three, Gaze: Any Grimm that should be hidden or obscured can be clearly seen through any obstacle, as if faintly glowing silver. Weak points can be picked out as particularly bright areas on a Grimm.
Awakening Trigger: Bullying Part 2, Electric Boogaloo
Stage Four, Petrify: Can encase one target up to mid-level, such as an Ursa Major, in stone, or fully petrify them. Requires several seconds or more of sustained focus. Ruby herself remarks that it's often impractical, unless she's restrained. This is also the first stage to be able to cause rapid Tarnish buildup.
Awakening Trigger: When she stands up to her bullies at Signal without Yang.
She is at Stage Four when she arrives at Beacon.
Stages Part 2: Beacon/Post-Fall Unlocks
Stage Five, Scour: Any Grimm-produced substance within a few yards is rapidly destroyed and nullified. This includes slime, ooze, toxins, acid, projectile attacks, and even their elemental attacks, but it only works for a few seconds at a time. It can also weaken Grimm defenses and erode their armor, but does not kill outright.
Awakening Trigger: Entrance Exam
Stage Six, Ray: The eyes produce a beam that causes Instant disintegration of one or two small to mid-size Grimm, and causes the skin of larger targets to "boil" like hot tar, doing great harm.
Awakening Trigger: Volume 2
Stage Seven, Luster: The Silver Eyes equivalent of the three-tomoe Sharingan, the furthest you'll normally get. Users briefly gain an altered silver Aura, essentially making all of their attacks and their very touch "super effective" against Grimm. Watch out for all the Tarnish, though...
Awakening Trigger: End of Volume 2
And Now We Get Spicy...
Stages Part Three: Refinement
After this point, the user must be both sufficiently powerful and directly witness a great loss (This need not be death, but often is), to unlock the "Refined" Silver Eyes (basically Mangekyou Sharingan). Unlocking Refinement is very strenuous upon the body and soul. Passing out or going comatose after it is first attained is common, as the user's first time inevitably generates high levels of Tarnish. It is also possible for someone to permanently "fail" their Refinement and get stuck at Stage Seven instead, if they face a great tragedy before they're physically and emotionally prepared for it.
But once Refinement is attained, "Ward" becomes passive, and works on Grimm up to mid-level, such as an Ursa Major or Manticore. However, the default radius is still only a few meters. This would potentially add some logic to why exactly Ruby just walks around with Relics, since she can now cancel out their attractant properties without any significant effort, and it would also help explain her moments of overconfidence and recklessness.
As for active abilities:
Stage Eight, Smite: What Ruby canonically does with her eyes. A powerful area-of-effect blast that can kill or petrify all Grimm in the area.
Awakening Trigger: RIP Pyrrha
Stage Nine, Sanctify: Objects, buildings, and places can become infused long-term with the ability to repel, or at greater levels of investment, actively harm Grimm. Effectiveness can build cumulatively, but scales down in inverse proportion to the total size of what is Sanctified. Handheld weapons, for instance, can become extremely damaging to Grimm for centuries, if sanctified by many at a time, or given many years to be imbued with power. An entire place/area is much harder. Ideally, it is meant to be used by entire groups of SEW. Ruby herself can only safely Sanctify something like a large house for a day or so, but maintains a permanent low-level effect on Crescent Rose. Can briefly "stack" with Luster for some Real Bonkers Finishing Move Shit.
Awakening Trigger: During V6
Stage Ten, Salvation: An ability detailed only in legend. Allegedly, the ability to "purify" a Grimm without killing it, turning it against all of its brethren. In some legends, this even bestows it Aura. What this process would truly entail, or how this stage is actually reached, is unknown. Sources tend to be somewhat contradictory of one another.
Awakening Trigger: N/A

Jumping off your V6 Giftbag nit-pick: Considering emblems are/were a thing, I'm surprised we don't see a lot of interaction with clothing in RWBY. How cool would it be if Ruby's cloak belonged to a silver-eyed ancestor? Or that the purple sash on Yang's leg was a symbol of good luck from her dad? Or Weiss modifying her family crest or Blake getting piercings in her cat ears instead of wrapping them in a bow? All these little things that would add so much to their characters.
Yes, stuff like that would be amazing! Now that I think about it, RWBY has already made space in the show for that kind of characterization, they just made it... bland. AKA, the outfit changes in Volume 7. Rather than having a couple of characters generically change their hair for no reason other than what the audience might headcanon (I guess killing your stalker ex with your maybe girlfriend makes people crave a haircut?) actually tie the change to the character and to whatever they're personally going through.
The one example I can think of where RWBY did this decently is with Jaune: upgrading with Pyrrha's armor and then later incorporating a bit of her sash (even if I question, from a world building perspective) why he has her personal effects + how he got them in the midst of/following a horrific battle. Especially when Pyrrha disintegrated.) But still, we understand both why he's changing now and why that change is emotionally significant. It adds something to his story rather than simply being change for the sake of change.
Personally, I love the idea of Blake getting some awesome earrings, moving from hiding her ears, to letting them be natural, to actively showing them off. I've wanted Weiss to move away from the pincess-y look for a while, just because it's so closely tied to the image her father sculpted for her. Give me a short-haired, practical-but-still-stylish looking Weiss (similar to Winter, perhaps?) who never could have passed as Jacques' perfect heiress. Maybe even a callback where Ruby notes that she's dropped the combat skirt and Weiss admits that it was never really her thing. Yeah, give us an ancient, tattered cloak that's been passed down through multiple SEWs, old enough that Maria recognizes on sight it even though Ruby dyed it red after her mother's death. Give me a Yang who, after getting blindsided by Adam, gives herself an impromptu buzz cut both to symbolize this new stage of her life and so that no one can ever use her long hair as a combat weakness. I want Nora's scars to be on her face (cowards) and for Ren to incorporate something of Nora's alongside his dad's dagger; for Oscar to hold onto pieces of his farmboy identity and Ozpin to carry bits of the past that aren't just random bomb-canes. Why can't the gears in Qrow's weapon be a nod to his long relationship with Oz? (A great nitpick I saw recently). Why can't Ruby and Yang both have a splash of purple to represent their family? Why have these characters traveled across a good chunk of their world now, but visiting all those places have barely left a mark? Why can't all the characters wear clothes that MATCH THE ENVIRONMENT THEY'RE IN? Sure, they've changed physically, but the changes are largely, randomly cosmetic, devoid of any meaning outside of, "It's a new Volume and we need new models for the next three-ish years. Better give the characters an outfit update. Incorporate the meaning of those changes into the story? Nah, too much work."

Deoxys
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So Jirachi may be my favorite mythical Pokemon of Mew-like variety, but Deoxys may stand tall as not only my favorite mythical, but perhaps my favorite legendary Pokemon in existence, only rivaled by one other that we’ll see much further down the line.
This otherworldly Psychic type is themed around DNA, evidenced not only by the double helix its arm-tentacles for but also its name, being the first chunk of the full name for the stuff, being deoxyribonucleic acid. While Deoxys still has a vaguely humanoid design, the Pokedex makes sure to mention that its nothing more than a space-born virus that underwent some genetic mutation that allowed it to reform itself into the being seen above. That mutation, by the way, was caused by some unidentified laser beam, just to further douse this generation in increasingly odd outer space phenomena and light events.
youtube
Deoxys has just about the weirdest method of encountering a legendary in the original games as well, since the event-distributed item that lets you visit its habitat only brings you to an island that’s dead quiet and holds nothing but an odd triangle, of all things. After interacting with it enough times and hearing it beep in strange, alien ways, Deoxys will burst from it and descend with the most ominous and simultaneously coolest battle theme a legendary has gotten yet.
Believe me when I say that watching this for the first time as a child who sadly missed out on these events felt especially impalpable.
Tumblr media
Deoxys’s wonders don’t stop there, since as an alien lifeform themed around DNA and mutation, Deoxys can actually change forms to augment its own DNA, and therefore stat spread, for a more applicable play style as it so chooses. Of course, the way to do this is to expose a caught Deoxys to specially recovered meteorites that are said to still contain remnants of its DNA. Fully in-tact Deoxys in other appearances are shown to freely swap forms at will, though, which is a cool ability for it to still have.
Tumblr media
Deoxys-Attack, seen above, is Deoxys in its most offensive form, shown off by its tentacles coming to points, its head growing sharp horns, and spikes jutting from its knees. It’s a pretty subtle exchange compared to the other too, but an effective display on a more attack-orientated form of the alien.
Tumblr media
Deoxys-Defense is the more protective form, where it’s become much more smooth, bulky, and bulbous than its base appearance. What’s really cool is how, in a vague sense, Deoxys resembles a big, bulky astronaut suit in this appearance, especially with how smooth and massive its head is, connecting with the rest of its body without a neck. That’s a clever idea to do with an alien.
Don’t mention it though.
Tumblr media
Deoxys-Speed is sadly the last form, clearly shaved down of much of Deoxys’s elements to create a more aerodynamic design that won’t be encumbered by unnecessary detail. I like that most of Deoxys’s body is the grey, seamed parts of its original design, like the red and blue normally seen on it is some chitinous exoskeleton.
Deoxys is definitely one of the coolest legendaries out there, and how a terrific gimmick to center itself around which pairs excellently with its core design inspiration as well. It also ends up working perfectly as the last entry in this generation’s Pokedex, summarizing every weird, unusual, and otherworldly these new additions to the ‘dex have been. I couldn’t ask for a better ending.
Score: 5/5 - PERFECT!
Tumblr media
I went through this whole review without even mentioning Deoxys’s color palette - which is great, in case I needed to clarify. I like that it combines blue and red, as if tying both Ruby and Sapphire versions together thematically. Clever.

Smurfs Discord suggested I make a SmurfSapphire to oppose SmurfRuby and well my ideas went off
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
SmurfSapphire and SmurfRuby were actually delivered to the grove on the same day, tho at different times. They’re not related, but were both names after gems partly for this reason, and it led to them being ‘shoehorned’ together a lot as kids. Right from the start, Sapphire has been the more confident, more assertive and popular Smurf, whilst Ruby kinda hung in the background, shyer and less self-assured, generally just cheering her friend on from the side-lines. Sapphire SOAKED up attention, and wanted – no, NEEDED – to be the shining star amongst her peers, and especially against Ruby who she kinda kept around to make herself look better, which Ruby didn’t deserve but never complained about.
Some years later, Ruby gets her first crush and can’t stop DOTING on the guy. This makes Sapphire kinda … angry. She’s never really had a crush because she couldn’t see anyone being even close to her level, but to think that Ruby might hit a milestone before her was unacceptable, cause Sapphire is a bitch like that. She decides this won’t do and sets out to subtly (and sometimes not so subtly) compete with Ruby for Handy’s attention. It doesn’t work for either of them, but the two are kind of locked in this ongoing war behind his back. That is, until sometime later, when Handy announces his new relationship. Ruby is upset but decides to back down, and assumes Sapphire will too. Thing is, for Sapphire this has now become fixation outside of her rivalry with her ‘friend’. This is an OBSESSION.
She sneaks into Willow’s hut one day and steals her book on forbidden potions, which includes a chapter on love potions, forbidden because they take away a Smurfs free will. But Sapphire doesn’t really care at this point, she’s completely blinded by the need to outdo Ruby and prove herself capable of this. And, it does work. Sapphire finally has Ruby’s crush in the palm of her hands, and feels back on top of the social tier. There is … one little problem tho. Clumsy. See, a love potion does as it’s advertised, it creates a pretty intense but ultimately fake form of love, which works but is no match for the real thing. Having Clumsy around puts the plan in serious jeopardy since he could undo the effects so … Sapphire decides he’s got to go. But she needs to be more subtle about it, since Clumsy is obviously extremely upset and confused about the whole thing. She tries to convince Clumsy that she just ‘won’ this one, and better luck next time dude.
Ah but Clumsy has a secret weapon Sapphire kind of overlooked – the twins. She doesn’t think too much of two small Smurflings running about under her feet, but they can be as crafty as they are mischievous, and together they kind of piece together what’s happened by observing and stealing a bottle of Sapphire’s love potion and bringing it back to Clumsy, who then takes it to Papa, who takes it to Willow, who all confront Sapphire. Clumsy is, of course, capable of breaking the effects of the potion, the twins get thoroughly rewarded with cool new gadgets and smurfberry ice cream for their efforts, Sapphire gets to spend some time in a jail cell and Ruby is hopefully gonna find better friends :)

Decemberween 2022: Nice Boys On The Internet
New Post has been published on PRESS.exe: Decemberween 2022: Nice Boys On The Internet
I don’t watch a lot of streams. I have a very hard time engaging with a space like that, where there’s a lot of tangible avenues for human interaction that are all explicitly one way. It’s a byproduct of mostly only seeing and engaging with stream chat when it’s something that’s a big deal, like Desert Bus or Games Done Quick (oh yeah one of those is coming up and one of those just ended). It means that for all that the actual video content is pretty entertaining, when the volume of human engagement is high enough, I just feel like I’m being invited to engage with thousands of people all of whom will ignore me, so I’d much rather watch the whole thing on vod later, possibly at double speed to make up for the lack of crisp editing.
This year, Fox has managed to shift me off this thanks to our getting our TV fixed and now we’ve had, in the evenings, a streamer running. Being as we’re in Australia, that means our streamer content tends to be either real late night Americans, local Australians, or the occasional person in the United Kingdom. That’s not the kind of programming that holds my attention usually, especially if I don’t know the game.
Bless ya Argick, you’re a champ, I like hearing from you, but I’m just not into Sonic games that much.
Anyway, there’s been a streamer Fox has been watching in the evenings who has managed to hit my perfect strike zone for enjoyable, engageable content, and it’s someone who goes by TGH.
Teej’s streams have been, for the past few months, an attempt to beat a Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire hack designed to make the game as hard as possible; you can only take one single Pokemon, if it ever faints you lose, and all the moves and evolution patterns are random. This game is stressful and unfair and it’s based on lots of interactions that are niche and unimportant in most of the times people play the game. Teej is really good about handling this game’s failure state though –
and it does fail.
It’s funny because normally I bollock games for being failure-prone. This is like watching someone playing Betrayal at the House on the Hill over and over, and then watching the absolute collapse over and over again in the first encounter. But that kind of makes these runs engaging – there are these little’ hey, do you think this will kill us’ polls, there’s diversions into goofy jokes, there’s interruptions where Teej’s partner will provide commentary…
… and that’s Amber Cyprian, who’s a really cool speedrunner streamer, and part of how this whole community opens up into the speedrunning/queer support charity streaming space. That’s cool! I really appreciate knowing that the streamer’s not likely to drop a slur or apologise for someone else doing it.
The overall effect is that these streams are really good, low key chill kinds of content to half-pay attention to that nonetheless can still carry the vague gamer vibe of ‘oh wow, fuck this game.’
But what if your favourite type of boy on the internet isn’t someone you can watch playing videogames, but one who you can watch doing science?
There’s a thing where people who move from Tiktok often have a particular aesthetic and vibe that marks them forever as being ‘of Tiktok’ like how they’ll spell sex ‘seggs’ or something. That’s where Valkai started, but his content, largely, is split into three groupings:
Reacting to anti-science content and providing explanatory debunks
Explainers on complex science topics
Looking at awful kids’ science kits.
He’s gentle voiced, he’s nice, he’s funny, and he’s also willing to just call things that are dumb dumb. I really enjoy his stuff and he also doesn’t seem to have the same powerful vibe of ‘probably going to say something TERFy’ that a lot of science atheists tended towards a few generations of creators back.
Whales and Viruses | The Light of Evolution - Episode 1
Watch this video on YouTube
Finally, if you want someone who does long form videos with a very chill attitude and an unwillingness to be needlessly or performatively cruel, I have really enjoyed watching Sajam this year.
Sajam talks about fighting games, and his stuff tends towards being – well, like, fight games are already going to be full of tension and potential salt, right? It’s easy to get into a mental space of being angry and frustrated when you’re trying to learn how to play a game.
Sajam seeks to be an antidote to that. Sure, he knows what he’s doing, and he’s very, very thoughtful, but he’s also mindful and a lot kinder to people learning, and focusing on playing fighting games because they’re fun. It’s a really good channel and also a way to build some fundamentals.

Not an album from album a day but...
heard this album today from the NACC new music charts and it's insanely good
The Rot That Grows Inside My Chest, Teenage Jonas
this is a pop rock/alternative album that has some really amazing emotional parts. i was intending on just listening to a couple tracks off of this but got distracted and listened to the whole thing. oh boy it's neat. i wouldn't say it is a belt-filled album but it has that vibe emotionally towards the second half through the end. some of my favorite tracks were 'moneymoneymoney,' 'You're Not The President,' 'Ruby Doomsday,' 'Candy Apple,' and '5 Things I Can Taste.' I do realize this is like half the album but that was hard too.
also on the track '5 Things I Can Taste,' I think it's cool because the song is a breakup song and so putting the grounding technique in it was really interesting. Within that grounding technique, you are supposed to name 5 things you can see, 4 you can touch, 3 you can hear, 2 you can smell, and 1 you can taste. Numbers can vary slightly but generally it goes from easiest to think of to hardest, so the grounding effect isn't impossible to achieve. So either the band knew that and switched it on purpose, or we are thinking of two different things. I would assume they knew what they were doing. So it's cool that they probably went and thought 'yeah let's switch it to prove a point,' for which i assume the intent of that point was that it's really hard to calm down with techniques like this sometimes. Because what are you gonna do if stuff like that doesnt work. if you're sitting there actively having a panic attack, it would be really hard to be tasting 5 things during that, even if you stretch the limits. This is also just my interpretation.
i just think this is cool thanks for reading <3

Artist Statement
My name is Simone Johnson (she/her) and I am an interdisciplinary artist, researcher and cultural worker based in New York. The year 2024 marks my eighth year working on solo and collaborative projects about/with water!
I initially wrote Wild Sun Catchers two years ago during Pisces season (while living in the Phoenix metro area) because I was invited to contribute to The Algae Society's group exhibition at the Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington, North Carolina called "CONFLUENCE" (2022).
Tumblr media
vimeo
At that time I was really interested in learning more about algae, especially since I was (and still am) drawn to seaweed on the shorelines of New York City, and furthered this curiosity by visiting a seaweed harvester in rural Maine. I also worked with algae for a performance art series that included "Ocean Radio" and "Deep Sea Time Warp 2020" about the ocean and climate change where, for "Ocean Radio" in particular, I collaborated with a bioartist named Leah Harper who made cool algae lamps. All this combined with my research of mermaids, desire to visit the Pacific Coast of the US and my growing reconnection with dreams and the dream world, inspired this short fictional story.

"I didn’t work with Algae for the second iteration, but this year I am returning to this collaboration, with Algae guiding my inquiry and research around the relationship between oceanic and energy futures which connects to climate change in different ways. I’m currently seeking out energy education when I have time, especially around solar and tidal energy. Solar Protocol has been a big inspiration, especially the solar logic on which their project is built on. I do think if we were to expand thought leadership, eldership or Earth community leadership, Algae would fit right in here. I feel Algae, in all Algae’s expressions, is encouraging conversations, skill-building and spiritual reconnection around energy, especially since particular Algae species are being studied for biofuel" - excerpt from Pitch Black
P.S. A lot of people are doing really cool, interdisciplinary work involving the Deep Sea, like mayfield brooks' Whale Fall and OCEAN/UNI's recent semester on Culturing the Deep Sea: Towards a common heritage for allkind.

Photo description: These images (minus the YouTube videos which include sound effects of radio tuning and a documentary about the abyss ) show a visual trajectory of my interest in algae/seaweed, starting with a hand held glow in the dark Algae lamp I worked with in "Ocean Radio" designed by Leah Harper, and me talking post-performance wearing another algae lamp on my head (TOP), two images from "Deep Sea Time Warp 2020" taken at Far Rockaway Beach 44 in Queens, New York by photographer Alyssa Rapp (MIDDLE), animation stills from Wild Sun Catchers (BOTTOM), and a AI generated image of a kelp forest mermaid at the very end.
We are still grounding in our dreams . . .
My original dream and hope is to translate the living stories I write about mermaids into photography and film, and surprisingly animation and AI are in the mix.
For "Wild Sun Catchers two years later: Thoughts on Worldmaking with AI", I wanted to experiment with generating images of characters wearing turquoise, gold and Hibiscus flowers, as well as underwater landscapes that included Hibiscus flowers. In some instances I also included the words "ruby or rubies" in my text-based prompts, which delivered images of fuchsia colored fish, plants and sometimes red jewels.
Tumblr media
Most if not all the merfolk are dark-skinned because that was a keyword, along with "Black", that I put in the text based prompts. I just want to see mermaids who look like me, and I think folks from all kinds of backgrounds want to see mermaids that look like or are like them. Shout out to Black folks of all shades. Black is beautiful!
I find that text-based prompts tell me what I've already known and want to put into practice more intentionally in my life, Words have Power. Many of the AI images that I generated were of merfolk not smiling, and some facial expressions I perceived as blank, sad or full of despair. Throughout this process I realized that I could pull out stories about these characters just by observing their facial expressions. When I added "smiling" or "laughing (together)" in the prompt, the AI image completely changed!
It's amazing to see Black merfolk smiling and laughing in an underwater world, because I think so much of Black experiences in relation to the ocean or portrayed in the ocean are of pain, anger, grief, loss. And rightly so. I want to be clear that it's really important that these emotions and feelings have space to be expressed, acknowledged and processed. In the same vein, there is also joy, tears-falling-down our-cheeks laughter, playfulness, peace. There doesn't have to be a binary! What are the emotional lives of merfolk and water spirits and aquatic creatures?
Tumblr media
Wild Sun Catchers is a world I will keep imagining and building for a long long time, and maybe at some point I can bring the story into a space of Collaborative Worldmaking. For now though, I'm also thinking about editing and revising the text itself, and listening for how the story wants to change and evolve.
Working with AI is so cool, but as I mentioned earlier, it is also being used in extremely problematic ways. I'm hoping the AI representations of the stories I write can also be a space where I can raise (my own) awareness about AI.
Thank you for taking time to check out this project, and a big thank you again to Jennifer Parker for turning Wild Sun Catchers into a short animation in 2022.

Pokémon
Saying that Pokémon is a franchise very near and dear to my heart is a bit of an understatement. Pokémon Emerald was one of the first games I played, and the anime was probably my first anime. I'm pretty sure I've watched every Indigo League, Hoenn and XY(Z) episode, and I've played at least one of every single mainline Pokémon game. So I made a tier list because I can't think of a topic and I'm currently playing Scarlet and Violet so :P.
Tumblr media
Get ready for some hot takes. Also, I know you won't find this interesting at all, but at this point I'm writing these more for myself so sorry :/.
S Tier
Pokemon Emerald was among my first Pokémon games along with Ruby, Sapphire, FireRed and LeafGreen, so I look at them with extremely rose tinted lenses, but I'm pretty sure a lot of people grew up with them too so I don't think that's a very hot take. (Yes, I know it came out 2 years before I was born, but I never had a console, much less a Nintendo one, so I played the Gen 3 games in a browser. And plus, I think the remakes of Ruby and Sapphire, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are regarded as some of the best games?[citation needed].) Even so, Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald are still really awesome games. With Gen 1 and 2 games being very linked, with even the ability to travel to Kanto in the Johto games, RSE was sort of a soft reboot, introducing 135 new Pokémon, and very little repeats from older generations. It was also the game to introduce abilities, inherent traits to Pokémon that assist in battles or in other ways outside of battle, and separating the Special Attack and Special Defense stats completely, which had the unfortunate side effect of making transferring from Gen 1 and 2 games to Gen 3 games impossible, so they created FireRed and LeafGreen, the first generation games, remade for the GameBoy Advance, and Emerald, to introduce the rest of the Pokémon yet to be obtainable from the previous games. Emerald was basically an enhanced version of Ruby and Sapphire. A slightly different story involving both Team Aqua and Team Magma (basically, every Pokémon has an evil team, with different goals. In RSE, Team Aqua and Magma want to submerge the earth and create more land respectively), animated sprites, and the third of the Weather Trio, Rayquaza, gets a role in the main story. And the best thing from the Gen 3 games, the Pokémon.
The Gen 3 games gave us:
The cutest Pokémon ever
Tumblr media
Some of the coolest grass types
Tumblr media
KFC.
Tumblr media
A pretty cute and interesting line. (Art by RoastedStix on DeviantArt. Although, I'd advise against searching up Gardevoir art. Some terrible people exist on the internet.)
Tumblr media
Computer.
Tumblr media
Okay, I'll refrain from flooding this post with images from just this game. But you get the point.
Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are the Gen 3 games remade for the 3DS, with 3D Pokémon and features added in from Gen 4-6, including, Mega Evolutions, basically beefed up cool looking fully-evolved Pokémon, like the 4th in the Sceptile line.
A Tier
Heart Gold and Soul Silver are remakes of the Gold and Silver Gen 2 games. Decent enough games, but the inclusion of walking Pokémon bumps it up significantly.
Tumblr media
This is what I was trying to achieve when I accidentally released the Grovyle that I cried about. The Pokémon admittedly are kinda forgettable, except for Quilava who is one of my favourites.
Tumblr media
And the level curve is terrible. I somehow didn't even evolve Quilava by the time I beat the Champion, and the Gym Leader levels are weird. Otherwise, pretty fun, along with the new features from Gen 3 and 4.
I haven't finished Legends Arceus yet because of my ancient laptop and inability to afford a Switch, but from what I played and heard and watched, looks pretty fun.
I put Black and White and its sequels in the B tier in the tier list, but I think they're A tier games. Stellar story that stands out a lot from the other pretty much cookie cutter stories, it goes over the morality of Poké Balls and owning Pokémon, and some of my favourite Pokémon. The Pokémon in Gen 5 doesn't seem to be very popular, but I love them.
These two starters are among my favourites, and picking one of them was so hard. I ended up picking Snivy in Black and Oshawott in White 2.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Huh, I just realised, the Oshawott line is one of two starter lines that go from biped to quadruped from all 27. I found a post analyzing the walking habits of every starter to predict what the Gen 9 starters would evolve into.
Ah, poor /u/RazarTuk, all your predictions were wrong.
Tumblr media
A mole that's literally a excavation drill.
Tumblr media
A literal Hydra with a little easter egg for people who know German numbers. Deino, Zweilous and Hydreigon. (Art by SeleneEde on Deviant Art.)
Tumblr media
Electric Zebra.
Tumblr media
Alright uh I don't think I have the time to get into the rest so, I'll sign off with a hot take. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are not awful.

How is PRK rk surgery different from LASIK and LASEK? The main lies regarding fact that here, exactly what the laser does is pulse the the surface of the cornea so there just isn't need to trim a flap in the cornea while the other laser surgeries start with. So let's look at all the rewards that PRK laser surgery offers. All of the first place, if you want to go set for PRK, your case ought to a moderate one of nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism. Then entirely almost absolutely clear on benefiting utilizing surgery. As it does not entail slicing the cornea and making a hinged flap in it, there is less chances of complications during and since the surgery. Pleasing’s New Campaign Star Mick Fleetwood on the Magic of Harry Styles and Joy of Wearing Nail Polish
Tumblr media
“He’s a magical man,” says Harry Styles of Mick Fleetwood, who he counts as a musical hero, close confidante, and now, the new face of his brand, Pleasing. “Mick is someone who brings me–and countless others–great joy,” he continues. “I felt there couldn’t be a better embodiment of Pleasing, or a person who could so naturally capture the wizardry that we love.” Any Fleetwood Mac fan knows the pivotal role that the Fleetwood drummer played not just in forming the band, but holding it together during the making of their landmark 1977 album Rumours amid heartbreak and emotional turmoil. Accordingly, they will know that he’s the perfect free-spirited sorcerer–and force of style–for the job.
The connection of Styles and Fleetwood began as any cross-generational friendship between two music legends does. “My 12-year-old daughters said, ‘Dad we want to go and see Harry Styles!” says Fleetwood with a laugh, recalling the catalyst for him first meeting the British pop singer back in 2014. Obliging the pleas of his twins Ruby and Tessa, he took them to a One Direction concert and subsequent meet and greet at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. Try as Fleetwood did to play “cool dad,” and fly under the radar (at 6′ 5″, no less), Styles, a lifelong Fleetwood Mac fan, immediately came up to him. The group’s iconic song “Dreams” was, after all, one of the first tunes Styles learned as a kid. It's also recently rocketed back into the collective consciousness via TikTok thanks to creator Dogg Face (real name Nathan Apocada), whose viral “Cranberry Dreams” video Fleetwood recreated to further Internet-breaking effect. “Two factions from completely different worlds came together,” continues Fleetwood of the fateful encounter. “Without my girls wanting to see One Direction, we–Stevie [Nicks] and I–never would have met Harry.”
Nor would the 74-year-old rocker have ended up starring in the campaign for Pleasing’s second drop, Shroom Bloom (out March 15th), which figuratively riffs on the theme of magic mushrooms with its groovy product offerings. It features face and nail products, like the Acid Drops Lucid Overnight face serum, hand and nail balm, and four new polish shades, plus psychedelic limited-edition apparel meant to supply, as Styles puts it, “an intoxicating escape-evoking curiosity.” With his distinctive sharp bohemian style, Fleetwood, a self-proclaimed hat enthusiast (“Hats are poetic, romantic; they provide generous amounts of theatrics for an old drama queen like myself,” he once wrote) with a predilection for tailor-made suits and jeans, brings much swagger to the campaign shot at his home in Maui, Hawaii—complete with a cameo from his pet pig, Tilly.
“Pleasing is this experience of, ‘Why not?’ or ‘I’ve never thought of that’—and that’s why I’m part of it,” explains Fleetwood, who views the brand as an empowering tool for self-discovery and self-expression. “It says, here’s something, either literally or figuratively, to hold your hand while we’re all on this journey. That’s what it means to me.” Along with a set of theatrical ensembles, Fleetwood sports an array of colorful manicures in the campaign. Think: a purple top hat paired with matching tiny shades, zebra print loungewear, and stacks of chunky metallic rings with teal digits; or a salmon silk vest layered over a mushroom Pleasing T-shirt and indigo trousers, topped off with glossy cherry red nails.
Ahead of his Pleasing debut, Vogue caught up with Fleetwood, speaking over the phone from his other Hawaiian home on the island of Moloka‘i. From the way he waxes eloquent about Styles and his impactful Pleasing mission, and the likeness he draws between the counterculture of the ’60s and today’s Gen Z-fueled Youthquake, it’s no wonder that he and Styles are kindred spirits.

I’d love to hear about how you first connected with Harry?
The magical mystery tour started probably eight years ago. I took my daughters, Ruby and Tessa, who were 12, to see one of the last One Direction shows at the Rose Bowl. Very generously, their organization made it possible for us to go backstage for one of those meet and greets. If you’re a kid around your parents, you want mom and dad to disappear. But what happened was immediately Harry and the band started hovering around me while I’m trying to hide and get out of the way and be the dad that wasn’t there. [Laughs] Eventually, the girls realized Dad was actually causing a bit of a commotion. Anyways, that’s when Harry and I first met. We really connected because it turned out Harry had been brought up around Fleetwood Mac’s music when he was a child. And so on and off for years we’ve had this passing in the night relationship, which has included him doing Fleetwood Mac songs and doing countless little and big things with Stevie.
Stevie Nicks once said Harry was like the “love child” between you two? Why do you think she puts it that way?
Stevie has a great sense of humor! The fact is Stevie and I have been in a band for, well, 50 years really and she’s an incredibly close friend of mine. She’s an adventurer! She is also the godmother of Ruby and Tessa. I think Harry and Stevie first met at a show or something. He knew it was around her birthday and he walks into her dressing room with her favorite cake. I thought, “How cool is that?!” It wasn’t arranged by someone else, he had it in a little box with him. That’s who he is.
What do you love about him as a person and musician, particularly within today’s landscape?
When I came back from meeting him that day, we had a connection that was driven by music. That became the magical part of it, which continues today. As a person, he was incredibly kind and thoughtful right from the beginning. Having come from such a tidal wave of attention, and to still remain that normal…I really gravitated towards his lack of ego. Coming from the band he was in was probably a real challenge for him, for anybody, and I could identify–not with the same thing, no one could imagine what they went through. It was literally like being in the Beatles.
Surely, though, you can relate with Fleetwood Mac, especially when things exploded with Rumours?
One of the earliest conversations that Harry and I had, and one that continues today, is he looks at a band, entity, or a person, and think “What allowed that to keep going? What allowed it not to lose the plot, even with challenges?” That, as you know, is Fleetwood Mac’s story. He identified with that and thought, “If that’s possible, then I can hold on to what I feel is true and what my next step will be not only as a musician, but very, very much as a person.” And that’s what I think is magical and meaningful about Harry Styles.
What was it like shooting the Pleasing campaign, and what do you love about Maui as its location?
I loved every moment of it. It was a hoot! I was originally gonna do it in L.A., but because of COVID, the original photo session never happened. With that being the case, the next thing that I said is, “Well, I’m gonna be going home!” And they loved the idea of doing it here. It went incredibly well. Everyone was really on mark about what to do and how to do it. And I just remained open, pitching in and finding hats to put on. And I told Molly [Hawkins, Styles’s creative director], I said, “I'm so into doing this!” And the fact that it was somewhere that I really love...Everyone has their home and their own versions of where they like to be and why they like being there. Mine are selfishly explicit. Hawaii’s a very beautiful place and I'm happy to be here. So having that be connected to what we were doing selfishly was great.
Your colorful painted nails were a particular highlight. Have you worn nail polish before?
Oh, I loved that. I kept the varnish on for two weeks! Back in the day in London, I used to wear near polish and all sorts of stuff, and the attitude was, “so what?” It didn’t have anything to do with sexuality. It’s not about that. It's about having fun. If you look at half the tribes of ancient history, men and women all dress up in beautiful, colorful things. No one thinks anything one way or the other, which is the point. During the shoot I noticed some of the nail colors were really muted, like the light blue and the pinks and the greens. I said, “You might wanna pick one of the red colors!” About three or four days after the shoot was over. I still had the nail varnish on and thought, I can actually see where my hands are going. I’m not kidding you! It’s really useful, and I thought, “I’m not taking this stuff off!” When you pick a glass up, you actually connect with what you’re doing, which is what style is all about.
Speaking of style, you’ve always had it in spades. You seem to really have fun with fashion and never limit yourself. What’s your personal style philosophy?
Style, to me, is taking the trouble to present yourself. Sometimes presenting myself means I just walk out in a T-shirt and a pair of pumps. Conversely, it can also mean I've spent an hour thinking about what I'm gonna wear. That to me is very human. It gets back to what we've been talking about: Why not think about that you're presenting yourself? It's all about suggestions of style. It’s like with music, you go, “If I hadn't heard that music when I was 10, I might not have written that song when I was 20.” And that is all part of the story. What you see in the presentation of Pleasing is they're very, very simple, but demonstrative options. The way I think of it is: Why not? What makes someone think that something's weird?
Pleasing is part of a bigger movement towards genderless style and beauty—one that I’d argue, you and your peers helped pioneer in the late ’60s and ’70s. Have you noticed the evolution? What excites you about seeing a new generation feel free to experiment and express themselves more freely?
That’s a really astute observation. When I think about what happened in my generation, we had a sense of freedom, a sense of feeling that what had happened before didn't need to be repeated. Millions and millions of people in my world, our generation, saw that, felt that…But imagine the ‘60s right now with social media. One might be so bold as to say that slightly naive pipe dream of everyone not being judgmental might spread like wildfire. Being reminded of that premise, I think there's a huge amount of similarity now asking, “Why not? What gives you the right to close me down?” It’s not confrontational. It's just, why would you want to do that to anybody or anything? In our time, if someone went to a concert with blue paint all over their face, you go, “How cool is that?” You wouldn't say one thing or the other. That's how I've always felt. Don't be judgemental and have fun with it. That’s what Pleasing represents.
With Pleasing’s missions of bringing joy to beauty and going beyond the gender binary, what do you envision for its future?
I have a sneaking suspicion that this is just the beginning of a real lovely journey. It’s the first page of the book that Harry’s seeing can be written and he doesn’t need to know how it ends up. I think it’s really important to have these stages that are set that allow the creative process to go where it needs to go.
So let’s talk beauty as a form of self-care. Do you consider your personal regimen ritualistic?
It's fairly that way. When I’m out working, working, working, which, in truth I haven't been doing too much of in the last two or three years, like most other people, it's more focused. With COVID lockdown, the backdrop of it is that you need to have a form of discipline. A year into COVID, I realized that I should pull my socks up. Eventually, I went, “You need not give up on taking care of yourself. You need not give up with finding new avenues, new ways to have fun to present yourself.” That type of theater I think is really important. And so there is a routine and I'm much more aware of it. I don't think I’m the best one in the world at doing it, but it's become a regimen. I'm actually more disciplined about self-worth, self-presentation, and the theater of, “Why you do take care of yourself?” or “Why you do put a mirror up, not literally, but a mirror where you go, ‘I need that?’” The past two years have been a reminder of why I need to take time out.
At this moment, what excites you most about the future?
I'm looking forward to more music! One of the things we started off right at the beginning of the interview is the fact that this conversation was happening because of the connection through music and something that both myself and certainly Harry’s world are completely connected to that allow all these lovely things to happen. And I think that's really the overview, the backdrop to this is music and being creative. It’s part of a really fun journey we’re on, and I can’t wait to see where it might go.
This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.

Winter: The Atlas Military has put in a great amount of funds into your little project. We need to be assured that the money isn’t being wasted by any means.
Jaune: I-I’ve been making splendid progress! I w-was going to give you an massive update report on all of my work! I swear!
Winter: If you have been making progress with the new Combat Drones, then why haven’t you released any status reports, or invited anyone to see your work?
Jaune: Quite simple r-really! I haven’t made any public reports is because there are some kinks I need to work through first!
Ironwood: Such as?
Jaune: Well, for starters…
RBPY: KILL ALL HUMANS!!!
Jaune: T-That one…
Winter: W-What was that?!
Ironwood: Arc, explain yourself. Now.
Jaune: Of course… Ahem! General Ironwood, Specialist Schnee; May I present to you! Atlas’s newest line of defence, inthemaking, The Hunter Drones!
Ruby: Jaune’s back!
Yang: Oh, Lover Boy’s back~?
Blake: Master, you have returned.
Penny: Who are the, Meatbags?
Jaune: I was gone for five minutes! Quit acting like I’ve been gone for five years!
Penny: With our processor units, it may as well be.
Jaune: Fair enough…
Ironwood: Hunter Drones?
Jaune: Yes! Artificial Intelligences, designed and programmed to support or replace Hunter’s on missions! They have the capabilities and training, of Veteran Huntresses! Capable of fighting Alpha-Class Grimm single handedly! And, can be designed and programmed to me a variety of tasks, twice as effective as any Human!
Ironwood: Sounds interesting, and they haven’t been tested on the field because…?
Jaune: They’ve got personnel issues…
Winter: Meaning?
Jaune: Uhh…
Penny: Who are these Meatbags, Jaune?
Jaune: Penny, You can’t call, General Ironwood, and Specialist Schnee, by… that?!
Yang: Oh~! So you’re Specialist Schnee.
Winter: I am, what of it?
Yang: I don’t see what the fuss is about, Lover Boy. After all, I have much better assets then she will ever have~!
Winter: E-Excuse me?
Jaune: N-Nothing, nothing at all!
Yang: Really, you’d pick her, some stuck up board over a smoking hot babe like me?
Jaune: Quiet, before I get the stick!
Yang: What if I want you to, then what~?
Jaune: Oh gods…
Ruby: Forget about them, Jaune! Let me show what I just finished building!
Jaune: Oh no…
Ruby: I used those spare parts you had on your desk and made them my arm turn into a cannon! Cool right?!
Jaune: I was using those part! Now I gotta ask for more?!
Ruby: Really… Whoops.
Blake: Master, why are humans, much less a, Schnee here…
Jaune: They’re here to inspect my work, IE, you! And, she’s nothing like that bastard of a father! Uh… N-No offence…
Winter: None taken.
Penny: Can we kill them?
Jaune: No!!! Why are you all like this?!
Ruby: Because humans suck!
Blake: So, we should kill them!
Yang: well, not all of them.
Penny: But, we should kill them!
RBPY: Yeah!
Ironwood: Arc, why are your… Androids so… homicidal?
Jaune: Genocidal, to be correct… Sir…
Ironwood: Nevertheless. Why?
Jaune: I don’t know! I’ve been trying to figure that out for weeks! They just hate, Humans and by extent, Faunas in general?!
Ironwood: I see… Well, personnel issues aside. I think it best that we test and see if they are as good as you say they are. Otherwise… well, we’ll decide that later. Till later then, Doctor…
Jaune: R-Right away, General!
Winter: Arc.
Jaune: B-Bye, Winter…!
Jaune: …
Penny: So… we can’t kill them…?
Jaune: Ugh… Someone, please shoot me…
RBPY: No!

Hey, I haven’t posted any photos of my rock collection in a hot minute, so who wants to see my GEMMIEST GEMSTONES??  I think I’ve shown some of these before, but these are my best and brightest girls!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This sparkly girl is topaz!  This gemstone can come in many different colors, but it’s most commonly found in this lovely tea-colored golden brown.  Like diamond, it’s a very hard but very fragile gemstone (8 on the mohs scale).  Before people realized they were all different stones with different chemical compositions, “topaz” was a commonly used name for a lot of different golden brown gemstones, including olivine, beryl, and even sapphire!
Tumblr media
This sparkly girl is aquamarine!  Aquamarine is a type of beryl - it’s what we call beryl with a blue or blue-green coloration.  It gets that color from its iron content.  Beryl likes to grow in these perfectly symmetrical hexagonal pillars!
Tumblr media
This sparkly girl is apatite!  Apatite is well known as a bright blue opaque rock, but it can form these super clear gemmy crystals too!  This yellow crystal is just one of many colors gemmy apatite can come in.  It’s most commonly yellow, green, teal, or blue.  It’s a 5 on the mohs scale, which makes it too soft and brittle to be used in jewelry.  But it’s lovely on my rock collection shelf!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This sparkly girl is pink spinel!  It’s a stone that’s often found growing in marble.  Historically, spinel was often confused with ruby and sapphire.  In the 1500s, gem traders in Myanmar were the first to realize spinel and ruby were two different stones, and develop ways to tell them apart.  It took Europeans about 300 more years to catch up, though!  Many famous “rubies” such as the Timur Ruby and the Black Prince’s Ruby are actually spinel.
Tumblr media
This sparkly girl is dioptase!  It’s a super duper fragile stone with a deep emerald green color.  Dioptase grows around copper, and gets its green coloration from copper as well!  The name “dioptase” means “see-through,” because the crystal’s cleavage planes (the lines of structural weakness in its molecular structure where a crystal would naturally break apart if damaged) are super clear and visible to the naked eye!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This sparkly girl is Montana sapphire!  This is the only cut and faceted gem I own, and as a precious gemstone, it’s also one of the most valuable.  Sapphire is a type of corundum - any color of corundum that isn’t red is called sapphire, and red corundum is called ruby!
Geeze, that’s always my go-to fact about sapphires.  Let me come up with something new and different.  How about this?  The “glass” in grocery store barcode scanners is actually lab-grown sapphire!  It’s true, look it up!
Tumblr media
This sparkly girl is Herkimer Diamond!  Herkimer Diamonds aren’t actually diamonds, but a rare type of quartz that naturally grows in a double-terminated (pointy on both ends) diamond shape!  The bubbles of stuff you can see inside this crystal are petroleum, which has been trapped in there for a few hundred million years!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This sparkly girl is rubellite!  Rubellite is a type of tourmaline - specifically tourmaline which is vividly pink or red.  One really cool property of tourmaline is that it’s both pyroelectric (generates an electric charge when heated) and piezoelectric (generates an electric charge when under pressure).  This effect is strong enough that tourmaline can draw dust particles to itself with static electricity!  Because of these properties, it’s used in the pressure gauges on submarines.
Those are all my sparkliest girls!  They have all greatly enjoyed their little photoshoot, and I hope you enjoyed them too!
