Neil Perry didn’t really care about girls. That didn’t mean he wasn’t attracted to them, of course he was. He just had far more important things to focus on than obsessing over a girl and her looks. That also wasn’t to say he didn’t care about those things either. Hell he had seen plenty of naked girls from the magazines Charlie stole from his father. He just never had in person and he was okay with that. He had things to focus on like school and pleasing his Dad. If he obsessed over girls like Charlie or Knox did he wouldn’t be able to keep up with the important stuff. At least that was what he thought until he saw you.
Neil had never been bothered by girls attending Welton like the other boys had. He’d rather them be comfortable and not distracting while he was here. Guys like Hopkins were the ones that couldn’t leave them alone. That was how he had ended up spotting you. Hopkins was leaning over you, hand pressed into the wall, his free arm trying to snake its way around your waist. Your heel came down so hard into the boys foot Neil actually heard him whimper.
“I told you to leave me alone!” you seethed, Neil’s eyes lifting to see your long hair swinging violently in your pony tail, bright eyes wide, nostrils flared. His heart stopped. You were damn near the prettiest thing he had ever seen. He was so distracted by the hills of your lips, imagining them pillowy soft against his own, he didn’t even notice you were now looking at him. A look in your eyes that could kill with your hands planted tightly on your hips.
“You want a go?” you asked, narrowed eyes and bright teeth shining behind your perfect red lips. Neil visibly gulped before shaking his head, clutching his books to his chest. You scared him. Yet not in the way you should. You scared him because for the first time in his life he found himself unable to deny his attraction.
“No, no. I uh, no” your head tipped back, the roll of your eyes so heavy he swore they almost disappeared. He wished your head would tip back like that looking up at him, touching him, taking care of him. The thought made his heart constrict in his chest, because he had never thought that about a girl before. It was as if he couldn't stop it, there was just something about you that made his skin tingle with anticipation. He had never had that before.
“Whatever Perry, find something else to entertain you” you scolded, briskly walking past him, shoulder brushing against his own. Unable to avoid it, another thought of you laying underneath him, with that fiery look appeared, and he actually had to close his eyes to shake the thought away.
So Neil spent the better part of the entire week trying to chase away thoughts of you. It was exactly what he had been afraid of. All consuming, distracting thoughts that he couldn’t seem to make go away. He had zoned out through three entire lectures before realizing he had a serious problem on his hands. He needed a way to get you out of his system and fast. Yet every time he was close to getting himself to stop he realized having thoughts and feelings for you was the most exciting thing to happen all year. The most exciting thing to ever happen in this school actually. At least since Keating had started teaching.
“Hey Neil, do you have the latin notes?” Charlie asked from Neil’s bed, surrounded by homework he was behind on. He preferred to catch up on it in the presence of his best friend rather than Cameron. Charlie didn't need a lecture about trying better at school from any one other than his father. Cameron had a habit of acting a lot like his Dad.
“Um, no actually” Neil gave him a sheepish look, long finger pushing the wired glasses up his nose.
“What do you mean no? You take notes even when Cameron helps us with math” Charlie sat up, confusion flooding his entire face. He just expected Neil to throw the notes over, he had never said no before.
“I was distracted” Neil shrugged, unsure how to properly explain himself.
“Something is up with you, you’ve been acting weird all week” Charlie shook his head, trying to read what was going on in Neil's head. Thing was it was usually Neil having to tell him what to do, not the other way around. As Charlie sat there trying to figure it out Neil felt the answer bubbling in his chest, ready to jump out at any moment. “What is going on?”
“Y/N” Neil blurted, nerves making his skin feel like it was on fire under the stare of his longest and oldest friend. The minute the name left his mouth he winced and squeezed his eyes shut, unable to watch Charlie as he processed this random response.
“Y/N? Like the Y/N in our latin class that tells Mcallister to eat it when she forgets her homework?” Neil opened his eyes and nodded, embarrassment covering his cheeks in a bright red.
“Since when do you even talk to her?” Charlie asked, arms crossing over his chest as an amused look covered his face. Neil never talked about girls, so this was a first.
“I don’t, but I can’t get her out of my head” Neil groaned as he gripped at his hair, more dirty images of the girl flashing through his mind. He needed help and as soon as he could get it.
“No way, Neil has a crush” Charlie snickered and that’s when Neil dropped his head on his desk, a defeated grunt escaping his lips.
“That’s the thing, it’s not just a crush” now that peaked Charlie’s interest, his best friend getting all squeamish about a girl was bound to be interesting.
“Not just a crush?” Charlie asked, eyebrows high in amusement. This was pure entertainment for Charlie, Neil embarrassed about a girl. Normally it was Neil being embarassed when Charlie said gross things about a girl.
“I can’t stop thinking about her. I watched her stomp on Hopkins foot and next thing I know I'm thinking about kissing her and..... other things" Charlie laughed loudly, eyes crinkling shut because for the first time it wasn't just him getting all hot and bothered over a girl. Hell it was Neil of all people.
"Wow, I did not expect this" Charlie said once he had finally calmed down, still amused over the predicament his friend was in.
"Stop laughing man, I need your help. I don't know what to do and if my grades slip because of this my Dad will kill me" Neil pleaded, not enjoying his friends amusement one bit. Charlie had been fighting attraction his whole life, Neil had never found anything worth it to be attracted to. At least until now.
"Look there's only one way to get rid of an itch, and that's to scratch it" Neil furrowed his eyebrows, confusion covering his face.
"I don't think that's true, actually the worst thing for an itch is to scratch it" Charlie rolled his eyes at his friends literalness and shook his head.
"Not that kind of itch, look you're not gonna stop thinking about her until you at least talk to her. Even better way to scratch it is to do all the things you're thinking about but let's start with baby steps" Charlie told him and Neil somehow turned even redder, the idea of even acting on his thoughts embarassment enough.
"Fine, I'll talk to her but that is it"

Welton sucked. Truly since the moment you had been here. The last thing you needed was to be harrassed by boys who had gone here so long without girls they'd have no idea how to act when one finally showed up. Yet your parents made you anyway the minute it became co-ed and it was exactly like you had predicted. Almost every boy in the school harrassed you, sexualized you, made slimy comments, and out right direspected you. A small part of you sympathized with them not being taught but at the same time you didn't feel the need to deal with it. It wasn't your job to make them decent human beings, it was their mothers, and all their mothers abandoned them here. So all you could do was put them in their place when they tried to mess with you. You had yet to meet a Welton boy that respected you.
You liked to pretend it didn't bother you but it did. You hadn't really gotten close to the other girls and all the boys ever did was tear you down. Everyone in this school was too bored and tired of everything. All they could do is mess with each other while they all waited for their escape. Especially you, waiting for that train you knew would never come. Didn't matter anyway, your parents were no better than this no good school. So all you could do was watch as they all flirted with each other, disgusting displays of undeceny, practically wearing scarlett letters like the Nathaniel Hawthorne book. Little did they know yours was better, you just hadn't bothered to show it.
Being young it was easy to play innocent, like being in this school wasn't putting you on the road to ruin. So everyone in this school could play dumb but they all knew what being here meant. It meant saying goodbye to the finer things in life, accepting a life of successful educational pursuits, with no passion for life behind it. So you continued to listen to girls cry in the bathroom at night and see the distraught faces of the boys when they realize now that their on this train they will never be abe to get off. Too focused on the progressive classrooms without realizing living their life held the best lesson for them. You hoped Keating would help them realize that, before it was too late at least. So that was what you thought about once English class had ended, the teacher yet again surprising the students in the classroom.
"Y/N?" turning you spotted Neil Perry, the dreamy dough eyed boy that sat two seats behind you. You had yelled at him last week, you hadn't meant to but people like Hopkins made you so mad anyone that happened to be in the cross fire could end up burned too.
"Hey Neil" you smiled lightly at him, hoping you wouldn't have to add another boy to the list of Welton imbeciles.
"Hey, uhm. I uh-. Could you-?" you watched as he stumbled over his words, eyes darting around your face, looking anywhere but your eyes. You realized he was nervous and he was also trying his best not to disrespect you. That was new.
"Take a breath Perry, I promise I'm not going to stomp on your foot" you chuckled, hand gripping his shoulder to ease the tension slighty. Finally his eyes met yours and they held so much adoration you swore your heart melted on the spot.
"I was wondering if you had the latin notes?" your eyebrows furrowed, surprised he was asking about notes. Especially since he was friends with Meeks who was top of the class. He spotted your confused face and the panic set in again.
"I mean yeah, but isn't Steven always on top of that stuff?" you asked as you began to dig through your bag, looking for the notebook.
"Yeah which is exactly why I don't want him to know I've been forgetting to take notes" at this you laughed lightly and Neil swore his heart stopped. He had made you laugh, Charlie was right. So far this conversation had already done so much for Neil, when all at the same time it was making his feelings for you absoltuley so much worse.
"Has something been on your mind?" you found yourself asking as you finally found the notebook and moved to hand it to him. Neil gulped nervously and chuckled.
"Uh, I guess you could say that" he said, adding the notebok to his mountain high of textbooks. "Thank you for this, and also I thought Hopkins deserved it just so you know. That's not how you treat a lady, especially you"
"I'm nothing too special, but thanks" you smiled softly at him, not expecting this. All the boys you had run into this year had been so vile. Who would've thought Neil Perry was a sweet heart.
"You're everything Y/N" Neil told you, stare hard as if the look itself could convince you of your worth. Your skin instantly started to crawl, your neck heating up, because damnit Neil Perry was cute and he just said you were everything.
"Would you want to study for latin together? My roomate goes to the library every night from six to seven so we could then" you found yourself saying, unsure why you had seemed to cave. You swore you weren't going to allow Welton boys in but you forgot how real gentlemen had acted and Neil was starting to take your breath away.
"In the girl dorms?" the color seemed to suddenly drain from his face and you snickered, the way he was so shy making you gigle like a young school girl. After all it was what you were but so many of the rude boys and vicous girls had thrown bricks at your cool and innocent structure. Hell you could build a castle from how many they had thrown at you. Yet, even if every day at this school was a battle maybe a night with Neil Perry could be a dream.
"Yes, Mrs Leonard reads in her room around that time. You won't get caught, promise" you told him, assuring him that the hall monitor wouldn't be on duty if he stopped by. Neil suddenly found himself nodding, the idea of seeing where you sleep every night, where you change, sending him into over drive.
"Okay, uh, sounds good. I'll see you then" you smiled softly before nodding and leaving him behind, a smirking Keating from his desk staring the young boy down.
"Should I be worried?" he teased and Neil shook his head, the tips of his ears red.
"No, we're just friends" Neil lied, right through his teeth, and Keating just laughed.
"My boy, you don't look at friends like that" Neil nodded, a blush permanently etched across his face as he rushed to tell Charlie because the only way he would survive the night was learning the expertise of someone who was a master at sneaking onto the girls dorm floor.
Tumblr media
If you were being honest you half expected Neil to not show up. He wasn’t really known around the school to cause trouble. So when he showed up at your door, 6 o’clock on the dot, your heart fluttered. He had rid himself of his formal school uniform, now in sweat pants and a white t-shirt that he had covered in a long sleeve flannel to keep warm. The way he looked warmed you over as well.
“You came?” you found yourself saying out loud, stepping out of the way for him to slip easily into the room.
“Yeah, I wanted to spend time with you” Neil told you, honesty dripping from his tongue like honey. You watched as his eyes scanned your room, taking in the differences, and possibly the similarities to his own. Then his eyes landed on you and it wasn’t hard to miss the way they had darkened.
Neil almost rubbed his eyes because he had pictured you in a silk night set hundreds of times. It was how most of his fantasies would start. Now here you were in front of him, a silk red set laying softly against your skin. Long legs bare and for him to see. Maybe he was day dreaming again. Surely this couldn’t be real? He was going insane and he was going to start losing it. First his grades then he won’t be sure what planet he is even on.
“I didn’t take you for the sneaking around type?” you finally said, surprised goodie two shoes Neil had not only snuck away from his dorm floor but snuck his way onto yours.
"I'm not, but lately I've learned some risks are worth taking" Neil told you, hard stare set on you. You weren't one to fall easily into guys but for some reason the way Neil looked at you made your skin crawl. You allowed his stare to wash over you, refresh you, and for the first time you allowed yourself to think it was possible to be something with Neil Perry. After all you could be the new romantics and even though heart break was a national anthem you both could sing it proudly. Neil was a reminder that the best people in life are free.
"Um, here are your notes" Neil finally spoke into the silence, nervously gulping as he returned the notebook. It was damn near impossible to copy the notes when thoughts of tonight seeped into his mind, doing things in your dorm bed that no dorm bed should ever see. The minute he would get his focus back he would stumble upon some hearts you doodled and it would start the process all over again. He wished he could get every single heart tattooed on his body.
"Oh perfect! I'm glad I could help" you told him, taking this notes and turning to set them on your desk. You used this moment to catch your breath, no longer looking at Neil Perry like something you wanted to corrupt. Yet that was exactly how he was looking at you because the red fabric covering the curve of your ass was making him want to bite it like an apple, any taste of you willing to soothe his internal war of lusting after you. He was so distracted he hadn't even noticed you had turned back around and had caught him practically drooling over you.
Quickly his eyes snapped up to yours, unable to read your face. He waited for any type of reaction, more than likely one similiar to when you bruised the hell out of Hopkins foot but instead you just sat there, staring back him giving no clue as to what you were thinking. Little did he know this was poker and you were about to play your ace. When you're a teenager you are too busy dancing to get knocked off your feet but afterall you need love and all you want is danger. A forbidden romance could be exactly that. You knew starting something with him the rumors would spread like wildfire but the thing about rumors is even if they were terrible and cruel most of them were true. So what would it matter if they had one more brick to throw at you. Neil still didn't have a single clue as to what was happening as you took a step closer to him.
"I can leave, I didn't mean to upset-" Neil froze as you held up a hand to stop his apology. For the first time since you had a caught him a smile broke across your face.
"Please stay" you told him, your eyes now practically begging for the boy who had been falling apart for you all week. Neil's shoulders relaxed as he nodded, a soft smile on his face as he realized you were looking at him like he looked at you.
"Okay" he told you and before he could process what was happening next your arms were flinging around his neck, mouth sealing against his own. Eyes wide and unsure hands quickly turned into holding onto you like at any moment you would disappear and this wouldn't be real. Your lips were as soft as he imagined, you tasted sweet like sugar, and now that you were so close he could smell your shampoo. His senses were trying to take it all in, commit it to memory, because until now it was just what he had imagined and now you were pressed against him, mouth hot against his own and chest pressed tightly against his. You weren't wearing a bra, he had noticed immediately and now he wasn't sure he would survive this. Surivve you.
"Is this okay?" you asked as you pulled away, panting to catch your breath but Neil didn't answer because now that he had a taste he couldn't stop. His lips were now trailing down your neck, your perfume clinging to him, and he vowed to never wash it away. Charlie was right about scratching that itch but he needed it fully taken care of. One kiss would not solve over a weeks worth of painful pent up sexual feelings for you.
You read his message loud and clear and as his lips continued to taste every visible inch of skin your hands were pushing the flannel off of his shoulders. The fabric dropped to the floor and now your fingers were curling under the hem of his white t-shirt and he only removed himself from you for a second to allow you to remove it completely. Your head fell back in a gasp as his cool hands slipped underneath your own shirt, pressing softly into the flesh of your back, and impossibly closer to him. You had planned on studying, truly, but now that he was flush against you, his length against your stomach you realized you might never think of latin ever again.
"Take it off" you whispered in his ear and he finally detached himself from your neck, careful to not leave any marks. His eyes searched yours for any uncertainty but you didn't seem uncertain at all so he didnt hesitate to grip the red fabric and pull it over your head, lifting your hair with it. His eyes dropped instantly, taking in your bare form, hair swooshing down, and making you look like an angel. He realized none of Charlie's dirty magazines could never ever compare to the real thing. To you.
You realized his nerves and slowly grabbed his hands in your own. You gave him a reasurring smile as you lifted them, placing them directly on your chest. Nervously his hands cupped around your breasts, squeezing softly as he determined exactly what it felt like. He didn't want to hurt you after all. Your head tipped back at the feeling, a small whimper leaving your mouth and he realized he much preferred that one over Hopkins. As if his body was on auto pilot his mouth moved to cover your own, to swallow your whimper, and sear it into his heart forever.
Your hands fell up one his shoulders, guiding him towards your dorm bed. Neil’s hands only left your chest when the back of his knees met the edge of your bed and he fell down into it. Propping himself up on his elbows he watched as you shimmied out of the silk shorts, leaving you in a white pair of underwear, a small bow right in the center. His eyes locked onto it like a missile to its target as you lifted yourself to straddle his lap. Neil fell back in the sheets, groaning as he squeezed his eyes shut.
“Fuck, there is no way this is real right now” he spoke his thoughts out loud and you giggled lightly, leaning down so your face was hovering right over his.
“You treat me like I’m worth something Neil Perry, because of that I have no issue allowing myself to feel things for you” you whispered to him, wanting him to know that in this shit show of a school at least there was one other kindred spirit just like his.
“You should know you’re the only person I’ve felt things for ever” he told you in return and you smiled before sweetly kissing him, something you planned on doing for as long as you could.
You deepened the kiss once Neil’s hands gripped your waist, planting you firmly above his erection and trying desperately to not rut into you like a needy dog. Yet he was failing miserably because he could feel you everywhere and the sensation of your bare chest against his own was about to become much better. His thoughts were halted when your fingers curled into his waist band, head pulling away from his own as your eyes flashed to his bare torso. He looked at you pleadingly, begging you to do anything, so you stood up, tugging the sweatpants down along with his plaid boxers.
Never would you have guessed Neil Perry would be naked in your dorm bed yet here he was, in all his glory, clearly doing everything he could to last. Which he wasn’t going to much longer because now your were on your knees, delicate fingers tracing along the vein on the underside of his cock. The image more perfect than the first time he imagined it, the first time he had imagined you. “I’m gonna take care of you”
And then your tongue was licking a long stripe from the base of his dick to the very top. Your lips closing around to give it a soft kiss and Neil felt tears beginning to fill his eyes, a desperate mess and so needy for you. The effect you had was dangerous and he was done for, officially. He should just drop out. Then he couldn’t think of that any longer as your mouth finally closed around him, taking as much as you could. He rutted against the back of your throat, your hands palming his balls and he felt himself begin to tremble. You only smirked at the reaction, sucking him for all he was worth.
“I’m not, I’m not gonna make it” he stuttered out but before he could succumb to his needs you were releasing him with a pop, a small smirk on your face as he lost his orgasm. You felt only a little guilty as he looked at you so wounded.
“Don’t worry baby, I want us to finish together” you told him, now standing as you slid your panties down your legs. Neil cursed himself for hardening quickly again at the sight. You sucked in a sharp breath as the cool air met with the wetness of your core and before you could straddle Neil again he was sitting up and gripping your hips, fingers digging softly into the flesh of your ass.
“Could I-, could I taste you?” he nervously asked and you smiled at his shyness before nodding. Neil stood, allowing you his place on the bed where you allowed yourself to relax. “This is my first time”
“I’ll teach you” you encouraged and he nodded, now dropping to his knees himself. You had been so worked up that when he finally dared to run a finger through your folds you were tightening around nothing. Neil took a moment to explore, really see what it all looked like, a curious thumb pressing to your clit. When he heard you take a sharp rush of air in he looked up alarmed and you just chuckled.
“That’s the sweet spot handsome” you explained and he took this information in as he continued to look. In a daring moment Neil leaned forward, tongue dragging through your folds before pressing firmly on your clit again. He was shocked to find how good you tasted, not expecting it to be like this. The moment he realized how much you liked it he dug in like it was his last meal. Savoring it and hoping to keep your taste on his tongue the rest of the night.
Neil was a fast learner. After only a few more tips and adjusting his position he had you wreathing beneath him, you fingers practically trying to rip the hair out of his head. You could feel him rutting against the side of the bed and the minute you felt your stomach begin to tighten you pushed him back, panting out heavy breaths. “I need you inside of me right now”
Neil blushed and you leaned over to dig for the one condom you had come to Welton with. You had never planned on using it and now you realized you needed to figure out how to get more. You sat up and rolled the condom on for him before moving to lay on the bed the correct way. Neil followed your lead and settled himself between your legs, dragging the tip through your folds. You moved to put your own hand down there, lining him up before nodding at him. He pushed in slowly, his length stretching you sweetly.
Neil realized no day dreaming could compare to the sight of you naked underneath him and the way your warmness enveloped him inside of you. Once he was fully inside he couldn’t stop himself from dropping his head down and sucking your nipple into his mouth. You hissed at the pleasure it gave you, realizing he had gotten more comfortable during all of this. Slowly he started to move inside you, sucking so hard at each breast you realized he was leaving them covered in hickeys. You grabbed his head, pulling it up to kiss his mouth as he begun to hit the sweet spot inside of you.
Of course he couldn’t seem to leave your breasts alone, hands finding them as he kissed like you were his and he was going to keep it that way. Soon enough he was pounding into you like his life depended on it, you prayed the other girls couldn’t hear the bed squeaking or your moans. You wished you could let out the pornagraphic sounds you were holding back to avoid getting caught.
You felt your stomach begin to tighten again and Neil could feel you clenching around him. His thrusts began to get sloppy and in a moment of courage he took his hand and behind to rub your clit just like he learned and you were milking him for all he was worth in seconds. Neil allowed himself to finish as well, practically falling on top of you as he collapsed, the euphoric feeling making him dizzy.
“I guess even though we didn’t study you at least learned something” you said, pressing small kisses into the side of his neck. Neil chuckled lightly, lifting himself up to look in your eyes.
“I hope you know this wasn’t my intention. I mean I’d thought about it but I was at least hoping to take you on a date first” it was your turn to giggle and you pulled him down to give him a quick kiss.
“I know, that’s why I let you do it” you told him and he smiled, leaning back down, and hugging you close.
“I plan on keeping you” he whispered into your skin and you smiled, a hand running through his hair, him still inside of you, and warming your heart for the first time all year.

You had always considered sleeping with someone before marriage. Yet that consideration wasn’t taken lightly. You had swore to yourself that if that was what you decided to do it had to be with someone who was worth it. Which never seemed likely considering Harvard was a big place with a lot of people. Yet somehow amongst all of them you had stumbled upon Neil Perry. Found him studying in library, a sadness to the air around him, but the most genuine eyes you had ever seen. It explained the reason why you had half a mind to even sit next to him in the first place. The rest was history.
You had dated almost the full four years of college and it was no doubt in your mind that he was the one for you. You were going to marry Neil Perry even if it’s the last thing you do. All of this is why you had officially decided you were ready to sleep with him. That and the fact it was getting harder and harder to pull away from him. So when he reaches your dorm room, wearing a ivy green sweater pushed up to his forearms, wire glasses hung low on his nose, and grey sweats, your excuse is you’re only just a girl. A girl with an entire meal for a boyfriend. You’re supposed to be studying but none of your books are open before you’re straddling him on the bed.
“Someone missed me today huh?” he teased with a light squeeze to your waist and you fight everything in you to not roll your hips on top of him.
“I always miss you” you tell him, hands holding yourself up on his firm chest. He had filled out since Freshman year, more meat on his bones, yet just as lean.
“Even when you’re with me?” he asks, hands reaching to remove the readers that were meant for studying he never got too.
“Sometimes, but only if we haven’t talked in a while or were busy doing other things” this sentence has him pulling you down to meet his lips which you happily accept. You can tell he’s surprised when you deepen it but it lasts only a moment until he matches the pace and dares his tongue past your lips.
“I gotta say baby, I’m loving this mood you’re in” he says trying not to sound to breathless when he pulls away and you grin, hands dancing along his chest and to his abdomen.
“What do you say we remove this pesky sweater?” you grin deviously and he raises his eyebrows as your fingers start bunching the fabric up, revealing an expanse of skin. Your mouth practically waters at the happy trail now revealed to you, hair he had also just grown in the last few years of college.
“You sure baby?” he asks but you don’t need to answer because you’re practically lifting him by the sweater to get it over his head, taking the white T-shirt underneath with it too.
“What, want me to remove mine too?” you ask and his mind actually malfunctions for a moment, unsure of how to respond because he truly had only seen you in a bra a few times. He never comes up with a response because now you’re lifting the red Harvard t-shirt above your head and revealing the white lace bra from underneath. He visibly gulps, eyes darting between your chest and face as he tries to comprehend what’s happening.
“Listen, baby. If we start this I’m not sure I’m going to be able to stop. I also have play practice in two hours and it’ll be so much harder leaving knowing I have you in bed like this” Neil tells you and you chuckle.
“Two hours is plenty of time, and you can always come back after” you tell him and his whole face reddens all the way down to his neck.
“You’re being serious, you want to do this?” he says and you nod almost instantly.
“I’ve already made up my mind, the only way I’ll stop now is if you’re not serious about me. I don’t want to do this and then have you leave me behind” you tell him and his face instantly softens towards you, hands pulling your face to his own.
“Ive been serious about you ever since that day you sat with me in the library” and his confession is enough to make you kiss him again and Neil doesn’t miss the slight roll of your hips. You know you have his attention now based on the way he’s started to harden beneath you, no longer fighting the urge. Just as your tongue darts past his lips you grind against him again which makes him put his hands on your ass, holding you in place because one more movement and he’d be harder than a rock. That’s what you wanted anyway.
After a beat you break apart from his lips, something he protests to but stops when he realizes you’re reaching behind you to unclasp your bra. His throat has gone dry and as much as he feels panic rushing through him it is also paired with excitement. He knows not to stop you again, that you’re on a mission. So he does the only thing he can think of and just watches as the fabric loosens and slides down your shoulders. You don’t have to ask if he likes how you look considering he is now fully hard against your backside.
“It’s okay baby, you can touch me” you whisper to him like it’s your secret. He hesitates only slightly which has you guiding his hands and placing them over each breast. Your nipples harden under his palm which urges him to finally grope. The feeling of his hands and look of awe in his eyes has you grinding against him again. Now lost completely in your touch he leans up and places a nipple in his mouth. Your arms wrap around his neck as a moan bellows from you. Once he has given both breasts his attention you push him back down onto the bed, needing more skin to skin contact. His stomach jumps when you slide off him, shimmying down his body and curling your fingers into his waistband. His pants were tented and he couldn’t believe you were about to pull them off right now. Your lips meet his pelvic bone which makes him gasp.
“Shit, baby. Please” and you know exactly what he means. So you pull the sweatpants along with his boxers down, allowing him to spring free. Your brain short circuits as you look at the sheer size of him. You need to taste him immediately which is why you give no warning when you suck the head of his cock into your mouth. The precum is sweet on your tongue as Neil moans out, hips lifting to find some relief.
Seeing how well he responds you suck as much of him as you can into your mouth. He’s whining needily which urges you in to suck him for all he’s worth. Seeing how hard he has gotten for you has made you so wet you can feel it soaking through your underwear. When it all becomes too much for him he pulls you off, not wanting to finish before pleasuring you. “My turn baby, been dying to taste you for so long now”
Your eyes can barely leave his cock, now covered in your spit and hard against his stomach. It clearly needs attention but he wants to take care of you. So Neil lays you back in his spot, his own hands dipping underneath the fabric of your pants and pulling them down your legs. Neil’s eyes never leave your body as it is fully revealed to him. As much as you want to be shy you know you shouldn’t be based on the way he is looking at you, so you open your legs for him to see. “You’re so wet baby”
“All for you” you tell him and he grins, finger reaching out and sliding through your folds. Your head falls back when it bumps against your clit and Neil smiles before repeating the same action with his tongue. He had imagined how you would taste hundreds of times but this was better. You tasted so much better than anything he could’ve conjured up. Neil is no longer worried about going too far and has started to devour you like a man starved. He’s so good and you are so glad you finally decided to do this. Imagining going back to a life without Neil eating you was a life not worth living.
“Fuck, I need to be inside of you baby” and you nod eagerly, grinning at the slick that covers his chin. He watches as you reach to the bedside table, opening the drawer, and grabbing a condom you had stashed in there. Neil knows now you had been planning this all along. He wastes no time putting it on before lining up at your entrance. Your hands hold his biceps, eagerly waiting the moment he’d break that barrier for you. Officially make you no longer a virgin.
You’re whimpering as he runs his tip through your folds, on the verge of begging him to do something when finally he pushes in only slightly. You wince which makes him freeze. “It’s okay, keep going”
“You sure?” and you nod, holding him close as he slowly moves inside. It doesn’t take long for the pain to turn to pleasure and Neil closes his eyes, trying to think of anything else other than the fact that you were practically sucking him in. Usually the image of Nolan in his underwear did it for him.
“Please move” you whisper and Neil nods feverishly, slowly pulling his hips back before thrusting back into you. You don’t expect the low moan to rattle out of you due to the movement and once it reaches Neil’s ears he finds a quick pace, pumping into you like a man who no longer has anything holding back.
“Shit, you feel so good” Neil doesn’t think he has ever experienced this type of bliss before. There will never again be no better feeling in the world especially because the girl he loves so much is now marked entirely as his. You have no idea about the ring he has stashed away for graduation, and you have no idea he had planned on marrying you since the first day you both met. He would’ve been fine waiting until marriage but for once he finally understands why it was so good to wait for the right person. Yes, sex could be about the feeling but when you love the person you’re experiencing it with it adds an entire layer of pleasure. Charlie never understood that, Neil couldn’t wait to tell him. Charlie deserved this feeling too.
“Baby, I’m so close” you pant out, and Neil smiles as he leans down to kiss you. He can feel the way you clench around him and he knows he won’t last long. So he moves to speed up the process. You gasp the moment his hand meets your clit, and his mouth meets your nipple. Neil may have been a virgin but he also knew Charlie all his life. He was an expert because of his friend by senior year of high school.
The action alone has you coming undone in seconds, clenching around him so tightly Neil’s movements falter for a moment. When you relax into the mattress, a blissed out look on your face, Neil finds himself letting go and finishing right behind you. When his body weight lands on top of you, you can’t help but smile. Your hand meets the back of his head, fingers running through his hair as he kisses your neck.
“I can’t believe you expect me to still go to play practice after this and remember my lines” Neil says which has you giggling in an instant and Neil hisses when you flutter around his dick still buried deep inside of you. Slowly he pulls out, both of you breathing heavily from the action.
“I’m sorry baby, I just couldn’t wait” you tell him and he smiles as he kisses you sweetly.
“I can’t wait to tell Charlie” he says once he pulls away and you roll your eyes at the mention of his friend. One you had only met once or twice on a Winter or Summer break but knew was Neil’s best friend.
“Of course you would say that” you tell him because whenever Neil accomplished anything his first instinct was to always call Charlie. Charlie heard he got the lead in the play before you did. Yet after everything they had been through together, sometimes you just had to deal with it.
“What, he’s my best friend” Neil defends as you just giggle and pull his lips back to your own.
“Yeah well tell him he has to share”

Sick Days
Tumblr media
Pairing: Neil Perry x FemReader
Warnings: fluff, mentions of being sick, language
Summary: Being sick is easily the worst thing that can happen at Welton but at least you have the absolute best friends in the world to make it better, especially your caring boyfriend.

Nothing is worse at Welton than being sick. Being sick was guaranteed to put you behind in classes, get other students to avoid you at all costs, and keep you from spending time with your boyfriend. On top of all of this, you also had your period. Nothing was more demeaning than being the sick girl at a mainly boys school with your time of the month tagging along. So even though you weren’t a very emotional person you had found yourself softly crying in your dorm bed after the nurse had told you to stay on bed rest for the rest of the week. What a load of crap.
The other bad thing was if you missed classes absolutely everyone knew. You were more than likely the talk to the school by third period because absolutely nothing else of excitement ever happened here. So while you were locked away in your dorm room everyone got to gossip about your absence. Which was how Neil had found out. He had confirmed the information with your roommate who had been given permission to sleep in another dorm until you had recovered. If he knew you like he thought he did you were no doubt heartbroken that you now had to die of boredom alone in your dorm. You’d rather go to class and that was saying something.
So with this information he devised a plan. One his friends help set in motion considering they all loved you just as much as he did. They snuck out of their dorms often for Dead Poets meetings in the old Indian Cave so what could it hurt to sneak out and hold a very silent meeting in your dorm. Neil knew you’d be awake, upset and bored to death from having to spend the entire day alone with piles of homework dropped off in your dorm. So it’s no surprise when he opens the door to your dorm and your head lifts from your bed at the small creaking noise that came from it. “Neil”
“Hey baby, how’re you?” he whispers out, heart aching for you and how sick you look. Your covers are wrapped tightly around you and your face is quite pale. The bed infront of you is covered in the homework you must’ve been actively working at, desperate to keep yourself ahead even if you are sick. He doesn’t miss the way your lip quivers at his question and he feels guilty for asking. “Oh honey”
Neil doesn’t care about getting sick, he sits beside you in the bed and pulls you into his arms. It was his job to comfort his girl after all, so he kisses your head, and holds you while you softly cry into his chest.
“I hate being so secluded” you tell him with teary eyes and his eyes soften towards you as he uses his thumbs to brush them away.
“I know, it’s the worst. Which is why we’re here” he tells you and your eyebrows furrow in confusion as he says we’re.
“Did the boys come too?” you ask and Neil chuckles and nods before pressing one more kiss to your face before he gets picked on for doing so.
“They didn’t want our best girl being lonely either” he says as he stands and goes back to the door. Your heart clenches from him leaving your side, needing him close to you. He opens the door and you’re met with the smiling faces of each of the boys who file into your room, some sitting on your roommates bed and the others on the ground.
“Hey guys” you smile widely at them, the whisper falling from your lips.
“Hey doll, feeling better?” Charlie is the first to respond, his signature flirty smirk on his face.
“I am now” you tell him as Neil comes back to sit at your side, arm wrapping around you.
“Our first silent meeting” Neil whispers to the group and the boys whisper hoot and cheer which has you giggling lightly into Neil’s shoulder.
“Should be easy for Todd” Knox teases and you all silently laugh at the blonde boy whose cheeks have now burned red.
“Impossible for Charlie though” Cameron adds and Charlie kicks the boy with his foot from where he sits on the bed which instantly has the red headed glaring at him.
“Alright, settle down gentlemen. Let’s take a look at our refreshments” Meeks says, reaching into the pockets of his coat and pulling out mountains of snacks him and the boys had collected. Your stomach grumbles at the sight, thinking of the chicken broth and crackers you had been brought for both lunch and dinner. You were practically starved.
“Oh Pitt’s, please pass me a cookie” you call out and the tall boy obeys, plucking a cookie from one of the snack piles and leaning over to hand it to you. You smile thankfully at him and stuff half the cookie into your mouth.
“Someone seems happy?” Neil teases as you finish the cookie and you smile at him.
“So happy, I wish I wasn’t sick so I could kiss you right now” you tell him and the boys quietly ooh which has Neil waving them off.
“I’ll be waiting the moment you get better” he tells you and you smile softly at him, wishing you could show him how happy he has made you. You vow the moment you are better you’ll kiss the shit out of him.
“Okay lovebirds, let’s get this meeting started” Charlie says a touch too loud with the clap of his hands and the boys instantly shush him. He holds his hands up in defense and Neil chuckles before pulling the book out of his jacket. You watch him fondly as he reads the opening statement and when he finishes you place a kiss on his cheek.
“We can leave if you ever get too tired or don’t feel good” Neil whispers to you and you shake your head, looking fondly over each of the boys.
“No, stay. I want you all to stay” the happiness of the others surrounding you being the only thing to make you feel better all day.
“Even if Charlie reads a stupid poem?” he asks and you chuckle and nod.
“I’d actually prefer it” you tell him and he grins, eyes also glancing at his friends who were so good to come and help cheer you up. The only girl he has ever loved.
“Then we’ll stay, until you feel better” and you nod, content with that answer and content with the friends you were so lucky to have.
“I want you all to stay forever”

Day 8/8
You and Charlie never got the chance to talk the rest of the day considering Todd had come home with them to spend the night apart from his soon to be wife. Chris had used this and your fight as an excuse for you girls to have a sleepover in her room and kick Knox out. The boys didn’t put up much of a fight and Knox ended up sleeping in his easy chair and Todd on the couch. Then the next morning Chris had you out the door before Charlie was even awake and over to Ann’s house where the bridal party was to be getting ready for the big day. Chris had been much more lenient on you after you stayed up late, curled under the covers, telling her everything that happened with Charlie.
“I feel like I’m going to throw up” Ann spoke from the chair where Maggie delicately worked on pinning her blonde curls up.
“You’re not going to throw up” Maggie told her, giving her a stern look through the mirror and you lightly hit Chris for turning to look since you had been trying to curl her hair.
“Don’t tell me you’re getting cold feet” Rachel smirked through her own mirror, hands slowly putting eye shadow on.
“Not cold feet, I’m just scared of being in front of such a big crowd. I mean I’ve never kissed anyone in front of my parents and now I have to in front of hundreds of people” and you were snorting a laugh as she lightly panicked because you remembered not very long ago it was you in that chair with the same kind of worries.
“Ann when you get out there and you see him in that suit you’re not even gonna know the crowd is there. You’ll be to happy to be with him” you told her, remembering exactly what Charlie looked like when those church doors opened. Not even a car accident could’ve got you to turn away from him.
“Is that what happened with you?” she curiously asked and you smiled, hands slowing as you worked on Chris’ hair.
“I was in a panic about kissing in front of his parents. They were so strict and I still couldn’t even tell if they liked me. Chris had to fix my hair three times because I wouldn’t stop pacing. Then the doors opened and as I was praying my Dad wouldn’t let me fall I saw Charlie. He smiled so big the second he saw me and those brown eyes of his were all misty and I thought to myself ‘If this man loves me enough to be emotional in front of a hundred people then I can kiss the shit out of him in front of anyone’.” and all the girls awed as you recalled this story and Ann seemed to instantly calm down as you explained the worries of your own wedding day.
“What about now?” she asked and you gave her a confused look. She almost looked sheepish over asking the question. “It’s just, you and Charlie weren’t talking yesterday and you left the church without us”
“Oh, that” you nodded, eyes dropping to Chris’ hair that you were putting the finishing touches on. Chris shot you a nervous look through the mirror, indicating you didn’t have to talk about it if you didn’t want to.
“What do you mean ‘oh that’, I thought we were in the antarctic based on the cold front you were giving him” Rachel snorted out and Maggie tried to suppress her giggles but you noticed anyway. Deciding you didn’t want to make things awkward by hiding it you spoke.
“I suggested us moving here and he shot it down before I could even really explain why” you said and the girls all silently nodded as they processed your answer. They could feel your sadness and they weren’t sure if they should continue to joke or not.
“Why wouldn’t he want to live here?” Maggie curiously asked and Ann reached around to pinch her to which she just yelped. “What was that for?!”
“This town brings up a lot of bad memories for him and I guess the good still doesn’t outweigh the bad” you sighed, trying your best not to cry. You were struggling with so much more under the surface. You had been trying to make it not seem like a big deal to Charlie that you hadn’t gotten pregnant yet. You were just trying to be okay and do things that would make you happy, moving here would make you happy.
“Maybe it’s a good thing, he wants you to have him somewhere he can be himself” Rachel suggested and you shook your head, moving to sit now that Chris’ hair was done.
“He’s more himself here than anywhere else, he just doesn’t realize it. I think he lets Neil’s death hold him back because whenever we visit he laughs more, sleeps better, and seems more like the guy he was before I knew him” you told her because it was all true. You think he was just scared that maybe this town could be where bad things happen, that the further he is from it there is no chance of him or anyone else getting hurt.
“I’d give it time” but he had ten years already. Maybe he didn’t know how to cope, he needed to learn a way to bear the pain. Ten years is a long time to hold yourself back from a life without worry and guilt.
“Sorry I’m late, my Mom forgot to wake me up” Laine burst through the door, looking completely fresh for just waking up as young sixteen year old girl. You were thankful for the distraction, the turn of the conversation.
“Come here kiddo, I’ll do your hair”
Tumblr media
It wasn’t long until you were all lined outside the church. Ann’s guests, the pastor, and Todd all behind that door. The boys had obviously shared some whiskey in celebration because your husband smelled just like it. You liked how alcohol could mellow him out. His eyes were glassy from the burn of alcohol and he looked handsome as ever in his tux. You missed him, you hated giving him the cold shoulder, so even if you hadn’t entirely forgiven him you walked to his side anyway, arm interlocking with his own. Slowly you tipped up on your toes and pressed a soft kiss to his cheek. He gave you a look of surprise and adoration, clearly having missed you himself. He wasn’t entirely sure where the sudden affection was coming from and you felt guilt rush through you as he clearly tried to figure out the best way to approach you.
“I’m still upset but I also love you more than life itself. Not many people get to walk down the aisle twice” you told him, head falling to lay on his shoulder. Even though he hated not talking to you it also gave him time to think, to go over a lot of stuff in his head that he hadn’t before.
“Yeah, but we do” he grinned and as if he cued it himself the church doors opened and the wedding planner started to count each couple off, urging you all out of the door where the guests had turned to look.
You held onto Charlie like it was your wedding day all over again, pouring out love for him as best you could while still holding your ground in your argument. You needed something to change, something to feel good about while you waited to have the family you always dreamed of having. Yet your thoughts were cut short as Charlie’s grip on your arm tightened and you looked up to see a large picture of Neil had been placed on the alter, right behind Todd in line with the groomsmen of boys.
“He’s so handsome” you whisper and Charlie felt a soft smile cover his face as he processed what Todd had done. He had made it possible for Neil to be in his wedding and it had worked because it felt like he really was there. It had felt like that all week and maybe that was why Charlie had struggled so much.
“Figures, Neil always showed up looking better than me” Charlie whispered back and you were suppressing your giggles as you got to the front where you’d have to part and move to your correct sides of the alter.
“Girls always like guys who put little effort into their looks better anyways” and Charlie was gasping at you and you gave him an evil grin and moved to stand beside the girls who had made their way down the aisle before you.
You didn’t have much time to laugh at your evilness because Ann was coming down the aisle prettier than ever. You loved weddings and now you could stand here and try to hold back tears as Todd cried while saying his vows. Behind him was his brother and all the Dead Poets including Neil. The idea of Neil getting to stand with all of them as their friend got married made your heart soar. Especially since you had made Charlie feel more happy than sad that a picture of Neil was beside them instead of the real thing. Then pretty soon Todd was kissing his wife and you were all heading to the reception hall, still soaring over happiness and family that filled the room. You felt the same when you got to the reception to find there had been a chair reserved for Neil again.
“Todd, this came for you. It’s marked urgent” Rachel said as she rushed over to the wedding party table. Todd furrowed his eyebrows as she slipped the envelope in his hand.
“It’s from Keating” he muttered after inspecting it, a wide smile creeping across his face. The rest of the Dead Poets shared shocked and excited looks as they glanced at him.
“Open it!” Charlie urged, eager to know the contents inside. Todd carefully opened the envelope. Slipping the letter out and trying to hold back his glee.
“What are you waiting for? Read it!” Knox quipped and the boys agreed, them practically buzzing in their seats knowing Todd held the first words they’ve gotten from Keating in ten years. Quickly he cleared his throat before reading.
“Dear Todd, I am sorry I could not be in attendance of the big day. It would’ve been exhilarating to see the mousy boy who couldn’t even read a poem in my class recite vows in front of hundreds of people. In all honesty I don’t have to be in an attendance to know what will happen. I’m sure the man you’ve grown to be recited his vows loud and clear to convey the love you hold for the undoubtably wonderful girl you’re marrying. For Todd you have always been quiet but inside you’ve always held an outpouring amount of love for the people around you. If there is anything I’m most sorry about is not fighting hard enough for you boys all those years ago. I know not to worry too much, all of you too strong and hard headed for your own good. Especially Charles. Me and my wife have sent along a gift I hope you will use for years to come but I’ve also included a letter for Charlie. I know it’s your wedding day but until now I’ve had no way of knowing how to reach the boy. This letter has come ten years too late and for that I hope he can forgive me. I went into the woods because I wanted to live deliberately and during that I’ve found all of you. My best wishes Todd, love the Captain”
All heads turned to Charlie as Todd slid the letter to reveal another behind it. Charlie was unmoving, not saying a word as Todd shakily handed it to him because he knew that hand writing. The soft and low swung loops of Charlie’s name inked across the front. Charlie knew too and no one said a word as he slid the chair away from the table and rushed out of the reception hall. He needed to be alone. They all knew it and you did too. So you let him go so he could have a moment alone with the words of his lost friend. Once safe at a bench far enough away he couldn’t hear the music coming from the hall, he unfolded the letter with shaky hands.
Charlie,
I’m sure you’re angry with me. In fact I know you are. What you need to know though is this was my only choice. The only way I could be free. Please know I would never willingly leave you behind like that. You’re my best friend, my first friend. The greatest and most confident guy I know. I always wanted to be you. To face the world head on like you did. That’s why I know you’re going to be okay. I don’t have to be sad about not seeing the rest of your life because I know what’ll happen. You’ll graduate and go to some big fancy school. You won’t be nervous because not even the school will be big enough for you. Then you’ll meet a girl, a nice one, not some ditz you tricked into going out with you. In fact in my version of things she’s going to be the one to seek you out because a real women doesn’t need to be wooed by the charms of Charles Dalton to see him for who he is. Then you’re going to love that girl for the rest of your life because if my friend Charlie is anything at all he is loyal. Loyal to me, to the Dead Poets, and to the people that care for him.
You don’t need me for all of this, I’ll be there watching anyway. I’ll be there for your wedding and the birth of your kids which I know will be named after me because let’s face it, you love me too much. Then I’ll be there to watch them grow up and help them through the same hardships we faced growing up. I’ll do that for all the Dead Poets kids because we now know what it feels like to suck all the marrow out of life and not be sad when it’s our time to leave it. I’m not sad, I got to do what I loved tonight. Now I’ll get to do what I love the rest of my life while watching the people I love do it too. Tell the boys I love them, that I’ll miss them. I’m sure they know it, especially Todd. Todd is going to be okay too, I know it. The only person I couldn’t bear not saying goodbye to is you. You were the first person in my life that made me feel loved the way I was and as my life ends I know it to still be true. My dear friend Charlie, the one who always knew my worth. You’re perfect the way you are and I can’t wait to see you do everything I know you can accomplish in this lifetime and the next. After all only Nuwanda can face the challenges life holds and still make something of himself.
Always with you, Neil
A large sob broke past Charlie lips as he gripped the paper in his hand. He clutched it to his chest as he cried harder than he ever did over Neil’s death. In fact he wasn’t sure he ever got to cry for him. When he got the call he didn’t have time to cry because he had the job of informing everyone else. Then he was expelled and his parents were too mad to offer a shoulder for him to grieve on. He had never cried for the loss of his best friend and now here in his hands was a letter frozen in time from ten years ago. Somehow Keating had it and all this time Charlie had no idea he had been trying to reach him. So he cried harder than he had in his whole life, face red, and snot coming out of his nose.
“Oh Charlie” and then Knox was wrapped around his friend, Charlie gripping onto him instead of letter. The other boys stood there, tears in their eyes as Charlie held onto Knox as if he would somehow leave him too.
“It’s okay Charlie” Todd said with a sniffle, delicately removing the letter from his hand that was crushed against Knox’s back. He knew it was something he had to keep. It wasn’t the kind of thing you just lost track off.
“He told me goodbye Todd. He told me goodbye and I was stupid enough to get myself expelled and never know he did” Charlie sobbed against Knox and Todd sat on the other side of him, trying not to cry at the sight of Knox quietly crying in his shoulder.
“Maybe it happened for a reason. At least you have it now and maybe it’ll give you the closure you need” He told him and Charlie slowly started to calm down.
“I don’t think I’ll ever be over the fact he’s gone” Charlie told him and Knox slowly pulled back, keeping one arm around his friends shoulders.
“None of us are” Knox told him, free wrist wiping at the tears in his eyes.
“Yeah Charlie, Neil is not the kind of friend you just get over” Meeks told him as he moved around the bench to face him.
“Neil was the best of us, you don’t just get over that” Pitts said joining his red headed friend and Charlie let out a breath, finally calmed down from his minor moment. A moment that came ten years too late.
“We miss him together, that’s how this works” Todd reminded him and Charlie sighed, getting his breathing back to normal.
“I need to see my wife” he finally said and the group nodded as he stood and began to round the bench. Yet he stopped in his tracks fairly quickly because there you stood in your mint green bridesmaids dress, shawl drawn tightly around your arms to keep away the autumn chill. The tears in your eyes were a strong indication that you had found him just as the boys had in an absolute wreck.
“We don’t have to move here Charlie, it’s okay” and then you were turning around and walking back towards the reception. He had his friends to comfort him, after all you didn’t know Neil like they did. Ann’s wedding deserved to be one filled with happy memories and after seeing how badly Charlie broke down over that letter you no longer wanted to fight for this place. You’d just make do because you loved your husband more than anything else. If Vermont reminded him of things that would make him react like that then you didn’t want to live here either.
“Is everything okay?” Chris curiously asked you as you returned to your seat and you nodded, reaching for the champagne in front of you.
“Yeah, it’s all good”
Tumblr media
It wasn’t long until the boys had returned. Their previous teary frowns replaced with wide and laughing smiles. After that the wedding picked right up again. The champagne had allowed you to mellow out and enjoy the festivities. You laughed at the correct place in each of the speeches and cried as Ann and Todd took their first dance as a married couple. The wedding was perfect and based on the smiles on both their faces you knew the marriage would be a success too. As the rest of the weddings guests joined the couple on the dance floor you could only laugh from your empty seat at the table as you watched Pitts attempt a swing dance with Meeks.
“Don’t let them fool you, this isn’t the first time they’ve danced together” Charlie’s voice made you freeze as he slipped in Chris’ empty seat beside you.
“That doesn’t surprise me” you said trying your best not to tear your eyes away from them and look at Charlie.
“I’m sorry” he finally said after a beat and you sighed, your head dropping between your shoulders.
“No, I am. I shouldn’t have pushed” you said, the tears starting to prick at your eyes again.
“No Y/N, you should have. I needed a push” his hand was squeezing your own and you lifted your head, a look of confusion flooding your face as you looked at him.
“But Charlie, I saw you out there” but he was shaking his head and cutting you off.
“That letter took me back to that night, the emotions seventeen year old me should have felt when I got that call. You were right though, that I was letting it hold me back and after the closure this letter has given me I know that now” and the hand that wasn’t holding your own was passing the letter over to you. You gave him an unsure look but he urged you anyway until you were reading the letter for yourself.
“Wow, he- he really knew you” you said, tears for both him and Neil now rimming your eyes.
“He predicted you. Our love, and if it’s any indication I think it means he was there the day we met. He sent you to me, an angel on earth” Charlie told you, heart still thrumming over the fact Neil had somehow conjured you up three years before he ever even knew you.
“That’s possible, I wasn’t normally the kind of girl to approach strangers on public transportation” and Charlie was laughing, lifting your hand to press a kiss to it.
“I’m glad I was the lucky one then” he told you and a smile finally broke across your face and you leaned closer to your husband. This was the closest you had felt to him since the drive up here. You hated feeling so distant.
“I’ll always choose you Charlie, over everyone” you grinned at him and he smiled as he leaned the rest of the way to press a small kiss to your lips.
“Well that’s good because I bought a house” and your eyes grew wide as he nonchalantly drank from the whisky glass in front of him.
“You what?!” you exclaimed and he chuckled lightly as he set the glass down and turned back to you.
“Todd’s Uncle is a real estate agent. He told me over at the open bar that a town house three down from Knox and Chris had been put on the market. Great condition, two stories, four bedrooms, and three and half baths. I made an offer” you were gaping like a fish, trying to process how all of this could happened in the last hour and half since he had received that letter.
“So we, when? How?” you we’re questioning and Charlie was smiling as he drew you close to him.
“Look that letter made me realize a lot of things. One being that I want to stay close to my friends for as long as I get to have them around, two was realizing I never recovered or learned how to cope with Neil’s death, and three was that my behavior all this time had been hurting you as a result” and you were shaking your head, trying to tell him it was okay but he held his hand up to stop you.
“So I’m buying a house close to my friends, I’m going to see a therapist even if I think it’s a scam the entire time, and I’m going to give you the life we always wanted to have together” and then you were kissing him as hard as you could, hugging him close because the man in front of you was the one you loved more than anything. A perfect mixture of who he was and who he turned out to be. Your Charlie.
“I love you Charles, forever and ever” you told him, arms wound tightly around his neck and he grinned right back, pushing some hair out of your face.
“I love you too Mrs Dalton, forever and ever” he told you right back and you smiled as you pulled away and grabbed your own glass.
“Well now that we have this all cleared up did I tell you I ran into Richard Cameron” and whiskey was spluttering out of Charlie’s mouth as you deviously giggled, knowing you’d receive that reaction.
“You ran into who?” he asked, using Chris’ napkin to wipe his chin and the small mess he had made.
“He gave me a ride home when he saw me walking in the cold after the rehearsal. I have to say he is not at all like you had described. He actually seemed a little morose about the whole thing” and Charlie felt all five stages of grief rush through him as he thought of that fink. He had always hated Cameron and yet he felt the smallest part of him curious as to what his old pal had turned out like.
“Keating would be proud of me” Charlie said after a moment, having processed your words.
“Why’s that?” you asked and he smiled back at you, remembering the good times for once.
“Because I married a girl who uses the word morose instead of very sad” and even if you didn’t know what it entirely meant you were grinning anyways, pecking his lips.
“Well you also married a girl who likes to find trouble, want to help me bust Meeks and Maggie in the storage closet?” and Charlie was gaping at you now, shocked and surprised at the behavior of the woman he married.
“How?” he simply asked and you just chuckled, finishing of your champagne.
“I spotted them leaving the dance floor hand and hand about twenty minutes ago. That means right about now would be a good time to catch them before we see too much” and Charlie was matching your devious grin as he grabbed your hands and lifted you from the chair.
“Lead the way my beautiful wife” and you smiled widely as the two of you rushed off to cause trouble and make Todd’s wedding more than memorable.
“I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life causing trouble with you” you told him as you reached the storage closet door and Charlie smiled wide.
“That’s a good thing, because trouble is what I do best” he said and you both were gripping the door handle, devious eyes sparkling into each others as you swung the door open wide just to be met with the screams of both Maggie and Meeks. They both stood in their undergarments, lips red and swollen as they made out in the closet. You almost toppled over at the sight of Meeks boxers, white with red hearts.
“What the hell Charlie!” Meeks was yelling as Maggie tried to cover herself and you giggled into your hand.
“Careful Maggie, he barely knows how to use that thing!” Charlie teased before slamming the door back shut and you both laughed before joining hands and rushing off down the hall.
“I’ll kill you Charlie” Meeks yelled as he peaked his head back out the door but neither of you cared as you laughed and joined the wedding that had no clue what you were up too.
“I have the best wife” Charlie said as you both rushed to the center of the dance floor, safe from the wrath of Meeks. You wrapped your arms around his neck, falling into step with him as you joined the dance.
“And I have the best husband” you told him softly before you both laughed again, the image of Meeks in heart covered boxers undoubtedly to be funny forever.
“What did you two do?” Todd accused, him and Ann now dancing beside you. You snorted out a laugh again at the memory.
“You wouldn’t believe us” Charlie said and you were hiding your face in his chest as the laughter bellowed through you.
“As long as my cake doesn’t explode on us I really don’t care” he was saying and Charlie laughed, happiness filling the room.
“Hey Todd, what did Keating give you as a gift?” Knox asked as him and Chris danced over to join all of you.
“A desk set” and the soft smile on Todd’s face conveyed it meant so much more than just a simple desk set.
“That’s Keating for you” Knox nodded and the group fell in a comfortable silence, slowly dancing to the music that surrounded them.
“Y/N bumped into Cameron” and shocked yells came from each poet around you to which you just laughed.
“In my defense I didn’t know it was him right away” but they still questioned you, clearly shocked and surprised by the random encounter that had happened.
“Man, I can’t believe he’s still around” Todd said with the shake of his head and Knox just shrugged.
“I bump into him a lot, kind of comes with the territory” he explained and Charlie snorted.
“I’d love to see the two of you duke it out in a court of law” and Knox was just rolling his eyes at his hyperactive best friend. Only Charlie could conjure up an image of an actual fight between the two.
“That’s not really how it works” he was muttering and Charlie just grinned because he liked to get under his friends skin.
“Hey guys, have you seen Meeks?” Pitts was asking as he approached the three couples and the laughs that came from both you and Charlie indicated you knew exactly where he was.
“Not sure Pittsie, but when you see him ask him if I can borrow his boxers sometime” Charlie said and Pitts furrowed his eyebrows in confusion but stalked off nonetheless to find his friend.
“You’re bad” you told him, smiling wide because tonight had turned out so much better than you could’ve ever imagined. Tonight in fact was the best night you had ever had.
“Yeah but good thing for me that you all love it” he was telling you and you nodded, head coming to rest on his chest.
“That’s true, and I wouldn’t change a thing”

Day 3/8
You had to be up before Charlie did so by the time you had gotten ready and left he was still asleep. You and the girls were going for Bridesmaids dress fittings, the boys didn’t have their fittings until a little later, so you allowed Charlie to sleep in. You felt guilty considering you had given him the cold shoulder last night but you wanted him to get all the good sleep in the world he could while he was here. You promised yourself you two would go out at some point, get some privacy, and make up from whatever it was that happened the night before. You still wanted him to be honest with you but you still wanted to be there for him too.
Everything had happened so fast last night you didn’t even get to ask him about Welton and if he was okay being back there. You actually didn’t even know what they did, considering those boys spent all day together. You knew Charlie loved these boys more than his own family so you felt bad you hadn’t asked. But then all those thoughts brought you right back to why you were upset in the first place. You were his family now too? So why couldn’t he share things with you like he does them? You knew it couldn’t be the same but he could at least confide a little, make you feel less in the dark.
“How’s it fitting sweetie?” Chris knocked on the changing room door. You looked in the mirror at the mint grin dress on your figure. Puff sleeves, ribbon waist, and sash skirt. It was fine but suddenly you were not.
“I don’t know” you hiccuped and this caught Chris’ attention immediately, turning to face the door, now concerned.
“Open up Y/N, I’m not asking” and you knew it was true. She had used her Mom voice after all. So you clicked the lock and in seconds Chris was in the small fitting room with you to see your puffy eyes and red cheeks. “Oh honey, what’s wrong?”
“It’s Charlie” you finally cried and it took her no time at all to wrap you in a hug. Also the Mom in her. She was so good like that.
“What do you mean? You two are always so in sync” Chris muttered into your shoulder, soft hand rubbing up and down your back.
“He won’t let me in. I know nothing about his Welton days. It’s like he doesn’t trust me. I feel like I married a man I know nothing about” you sobbed against her and Chris sighed. This was a tough one because she knew Charlie had been reserved. He wasn’t the loud and overconfident boy she had met when they were young. He was changed, hurt by the passing of his friend.
“That’s not true, you know Charlie better than any of us” that had caused you to pull back, a soft shake of your head as she continued to hold your arms.
“No, that’s not true. Those boys know him better than me. The Charlie I know quietly reads on the bus, likes early morning cups of coffee, flirts terribly with anyone, is charming but keeps to himself at the same time” you ranted, thinking of all the things your husband did that seems so out of character of the man everyone else here knew.
“He is all those things hun. Every last one, but-“
“See there’s a but” you pointed to her and she sighed, dropping her head and the blonde curls fell around her face.
“But, he used to be loud, overconfident, trouble, daring, outspoken, and he is still all those things deep down. You change when you get older and that makes you no less, you know the same Charlie we all do” she told you as she lifted her head and you sighed.
“I know the new Charlie. The Charlie who was chewed up and spit out by the cruel world. You guys know that version of him and the one that was full of hope” you whispered and Chris nodded, feeling her own tears form in her eyes.
“I was there that night” she whispered back and you felt your breath get caught in your throat. You had known that but no one ever really talked about it. Chris especially because she felt guilty for feeling sad when she had never formally met Neil.
“I had gone to Welton to see Knox. All the boys had dressed up, ties and all to see Neil take the stage. They all looked so happy, buzzing with excitement. When we were at the play they were the loudest in the crowd. I mean Charlie was absolutely beaming over the boy. Not only was Neil so amazing up there, but the support and love he got from the crowd made it so much more. So much more important” she told you and you hung onto every last word, wanting to know more, to feel like you were there.
“What happened then?” you asked and she sighed, moving to sit on the seat in the corner.
“We went outside, all the boys were complimenting him. Telling Neil how amazing he was and then his father kept pulling him away, yelling at Keating, Charlie begged for him to let Neil stay but it was no use. So we told Keating that we wanted to walk back. We went to the old Indian cave and had a Dead Poets meeting. We danced, laughed, recited poems, and praised Neil” Chris said, obviously remembering the night like it was yesterday. A soft smile on her face like she was 17 again.
“Knox dropped me at home and when the phone rang the next morning I expected Knox to be reciting me a poem, going on and on about how beautiful I was, but instead he was crying. I had never heard of someone taking their own life but when he told me my stomach dropped. He was heartbroken and I could only imagine the rest of them. I barely heard from him for weeks and even then I knew he was never the same. He was still Knox, loving and caring, but he was tainted. Charlie was Neil’s best and longest friend, if what had happened only dimmed Knox slightly it had darkened Charlie completely” those words were like a gut punch. Quickly you held your stomach, pain flowing through you. Your Charlie was every version of him but he never got to be what he wanted because of so much pain and turmoil.
“I’m a terrible wife” you said, unsure you were on the brink of vomiting or crying harder.
“No you’re not” Chris was standing again but you were shaking your head, unconvinced.
“Yes I am Chris. I never even gave him the benefit of the doubt. I’m awful” you sobbed again and she sighed, opting for just holding you this time.
“Just talk to him, he might not tell you everything right away but give him time. Charlie took the hardest hit when Neil died. Everyone knows that” Chris was rubbing your back again and you nodded into her shoulder.
“Thanks Chris” you told her and she smiled, reaching to grab your shoulders.
“Of course, now let’s see this dress” she spoke as she turned you around to face the mirror. A soft smile appeared on her face and she hummed with contentment.
“It looks perfect, stunning” she told you and a smile finally cracked across your face.
“Good, let’s get out of here” you said and she could only laugh, seeing exactly all the things in you Charlie did. You were tailor made for him, cut from the same cloth, and she would forever be grateful to you for being there for him. Charlie was family after all and now you were too.

"Y/N was upset with me last night?" Charlie spoke into the quiet late morning air. Him and Knox sat in the living room, Johnny building blocks in front of them as they shared parts of the paper and drank some coffee.
"What'd you do?" Knox asked and Charlie shot a glare his way for automatically assuming it was his fault but in a sense it was.
"The girls looked at pictures of us from that semester. She was hurt that I hadn't told her about it, what it was like before everything happened. I think she felt left out" Knox found himself chuckling at this.
"Of course she was Charlie, all Todd talks about was the good old Welton days and Chris was there towards the end, I got to share a lot. You still have it all bottled up" Knox said and Charlie felt somewhat offended but he knew it was true.
"It's hard Knox" he almost whispered, trying not to think about the pain from back then.
"I know it is, I lost Neil too" but Charlie was shaking his head and Knox was setting down his paper and giving him a confused look.
"You don't know Knox. I'm the one that got the call, I'm the one that told everyone, and then I got kicked out. I was pulled away from my friends who were supposed to be there to comfort me. My parents didn't offer any comfort and they were so mad at me they wouldn't even consider it. You guys had each other and I had no one. I was miserable, alone, and I haven't been the same since" Charlie said and it finally dawned on Knox how different it was for Charlie. At Welton there was those nights they all missed him but they could meet, talk about him, hug and comfort each other. Charlie wasn't allowed to write them for four months. When they all had each other he had absolutley no one.
"I had never thought of it like that Charlie" Knox said, voice entirely apologetic. He felt guilty now for not trying hard enough to reach out to him, check in, make sure he was okay.
"It's okay, I never wanted you guys to really know how hard things were for me" Charlie said, trying to set him at ease. Charlie could've reached out too. He normally disobeyed his parents anyway. After Neil though it was harder to care, at that point he just did as they said. He went to Military school and then let his Dad pull every string in the book to get him into Columbia and he kept his mind numb for all of it.
"Maybe it's time. Open up not just to her but the rest of us" Knox said and Charlie solemnly nodded, considering that maybe after all this time he could start learning to move on. Feel more free like younger him did and his wife deserved that too.
“Maybe, let’s just focus on getting Todd married first” Charlie said and Knox snorted lightly, as if the idea of Todd still getting married shocked them all.
“Uncle Charlie, do you want to play blocks with me” Johnny asked, jumping onto his legs, a red block tight in his grip. Charlie chuckled as he passed his parts of the paper to Knox.
“Of course I do, what do you want to build?” he asked, grabbing the boy so he could move off the couch and slide onto the ground with him.
“A castle and we can make Mommy and Aunt Y/N princesses and they can live in it!” he cheered and Charlie laughed, grabbing a few blocks to lay down as the structure.
“That’s sounds like a great idea buddy” Charlie said, a hand ruffling his hair before grabbing some more blocks to continue building.
After his talk with Knox he realized it was time to open up to you. After all even if it was only four months of his life it felt like so much more. The amount of years and things he had gone through still couldn’t compare to the happiness he had then and you deserved to know about it. You deserved a lot of things and as he built blocks with Johnny he knew he owed it to you, to you and himself, and to your future kids. Charlie knew a part of him wouldn’t be healed until he was able to give a life to his kids that he deserved all those years ago.

Day 6/8
Thankfully that night you hadn’t gotten drunk enough to be down for the count. You were too busy being proud of Charlie for overcoming and working through his emotions over Neil. By the end of the night it had actually felt like Neil had been at that table with them and you knew that was comforting for Charlie. Tonight you hoped would be the same because he was to go out with the boys for a Bachelor party. If Todd had set aside a seat for Neil at the engagement party he definitely had something up his sleeve for the bachelor party. As for you, it was Ann’s bachelorette party, and you had planned to party like you never had before. Which at the moment was proving to be very successful.
“Chris, you did not!” Ann drunkenly squealed, her blonde hair frizzing from the crown she had to keep adjusting on her head.
“Listen, I have no care about what Todd’s appendages look like but I figured if you were promising yourself to them for the rest of your life I’d at least provide one bound to be good” and Ann blushed firetruck red as the penis shaped cake was placed on the coffee table.
“For your information his appendages are more than fine” and your hands were flying to your ears, eyes squeezed shut, and humming as if to tune her out. You could still hear her giggles though at your reaction.
“Todd is sweet, quiet, innocent Todd. He doesn’t have any appendages” you were telling her, shaking your head, and praying the alcohol buzzing through you would make this conversation go away.
“Oh don’t be such a prude Y/N. You’re with Charlie” Rachel pointed to you and you felt yourself gasp lightly.
“And what’s that supposed to mean?” you asked, a giggle bubbling past your lips.
“Oh Charlie loved and breathed sex majority of his life” Chris groaned out and Ann was nodding right beside her.
“Todd told me he was the one to show him his first centerfold” Ann tipped her drink at you and you blushed at the mention of dirty magazines.
“Yes and Knox learned most of how everything works from him” Chris nodded along and Maggie giggled drunkenly from across the room.
“He was legend at Henley Hall, he was too confident. He oozed this personality that had most of us crossing our legs” Rachel informed you and a deep blush rose to your cheeks.
It was fact Charlie was overconfident, charming, and knowledgeable when it came to women. When you had gotten to know him he warmed up to that behavior around you fairly quickly. It was just hearing about how he was legend for these things shocked you considering Neil’s death has mellowed him out, made him so much more unspoken. He was much different from the legend of the kid who got a phone call from God saying they should allow girls at an all boys school.
“You knows girls, Todd once told me Charlie would use red paint to put a lighting bolt on his chest. Something about it being a sign for virility and attracting women” Ann giggled, clearly one too many drinks deep. You on the other hand found this of interest. You actually had never known Charlie had done such a thing, and the thought made you giggle and warm over because now you were missing your husband.
"Please don't hold out on us Y/N. I've been single for so long" Maggie whined after slugging back the rest of her drink and you sighed which to them was an instant sign of you caving to their prying questions.
"Fine, if you must know Charlie is good. Really good" you said hoping that this answer would be enough but the groans and boo's coming from the drunk girls said otherwise.
"Details! We need details" Rachel told you and a deep red hue found it's way to your cheeks because Charlie may not openly talk about his confidence towards women as much as he used to but he sure as hell still had it when it came to the two of you alone.
"Her and Charlie did it two mornings ago" Chris tattled on you and you gasped before chucking a pillow her way just for her to loudly laugh at it.
"In Chris' house! Did you get caught?" Ann inquired and you rolled your eyes at Chris before turning to Ann.
"No we were quiet. I woke up to him kissing my neck and then when we were making out I realized he wanted more. I tried to tell him we could get caught but he promised me we wouldn’t" you said, already feeling like you had shared enough details of your sex life with your friends. Being married to Charlie without kids required a very busy sex life that you weren't used to discussing. Charlie was very hard to turn down, the kind of guy that once you had a taste you couldnt stop. It was no wonder he was such a ladies man, he made sure he knew what he was doing and sometimes you just couldn't get enough.
“Gosh. I don’t think I’ve ever been woken up by a man kissing me” Maggie hummed delightfully, eyes shut and mind buzzing with the idea. The other girls giggled lightly.
“My first kiss with Knox was dizzying” Chris gushed and everyone tuned into her quickly. “I wasn’t sure why I couldn’t quite get him out of my head, I was still with Chet. Then he kissed me and it all just made sense”
“I love love, I wish I could marry Todd every day the rest of my life” Ann grinned widely and Rachel snorted, knowing what it was like to be in love with the Anderson gene.
“No you don’t” Rachel told her and Ann rolled her eyes.
“Todd is much gentler than Jeff, you wouldn’t get it” but the rest of the girls were laughing anyway because they knew pretty soon Ann would be out of the honeymoon phase even with a guy like Todd.
“Alright I’m getting a refill, anyone else?” you asked and the girls all shook their heads, continuing to tease Ann for her minor obsession with her soon to be husband.
As you refilled your drink in the kitchen you tried to remember what the week before your wedding was like. Just like Ann you were head over heels for Charlie, you almost had no room to tease. You had spent that entire week with Chris and college girlfriend drinking and mooning over how lucky you were to have him. It almost felt like a life time ago but it had only been three years ago. You had known the boy six years now and even though six years can be a lot of time it was nothing compared to the forever you vowed to each other. You were still learning things about him, especially now. This town brought out parts of him that he was hiding most of the time.
Before heading back to join the girls in the living room you stopped in the bathroom. Bound to make this trip multiple times tonight with the way you were drinking. As you washed your hands your eyes caught the tube of lipstick left on the counter. More than likely Ann’s but between the alcohol, thoughts of your husband, and the story of Charlie, you found yourself grabbing it. Taking one glance at yourself in the mirror you slowly unbuttoned your blouse before uncapping the lipstick and placing it on your skin. If you knew your husband as well as you thought you did he was going to go nuts when he saw this.
“Hey what took so long?” Rachel inquired as she noticed you come back first.
“Bathroom” you explained before returning to your previous seat and it didn’t take long to notice the deep blush on Maggie’s face and Ann’s not so innocent giggling. “What’d you do?”
“Nothing!” Ann squealed, struggling to stop laughing when she began to defend herself.
“She was telling Maggie in detail the very dirty things she’s done with Todd” Chris tattled and you snorted out a soft laugh, knowing you’d be wearing the same face as Maggie if you had been here.
“Maggie, you do know what single bridesmaids do right?” you found yourself asking and Maggie gave you a confused look, sitting up now safe from Ann’s words.
“No, what do they do?” she asked and you tried to suppress the evil smile on your face into the rim of your drink as you took a sip.
“They get with the single groomsmen” and a gasp was falling out of the innocent brunette girl as the rest of you laughed loudly.
“That can’t be true” but Rachel was shaking her head with amusement, hand landing on her shoulder.
“It is dear, I remember my first single wedding party. I found myself with a man named John Lester, back of the reception hall, tongue down my throat. He always tasted like saltine crackers” and Chris’ face was twisting in disgust over this.
“Lucky for you Mags there is two single groomsmen. You can take your pick” Ann told her and Maggie pouted.
“Not the red head” Maggie said and Rachel gasped loudly.
“What’s wrong with red heads?” she accused, her own red hair and vibrant green eyes shining back at the girl.
“Nothing, he’s just short. The other one though, he’s tall. I like tall” Maggie said and all the girls were laughing again.
“Whatever one you pick they are both lovely people. I’ve know those boys since I was seventeen” Chris was telling her and you nodded right beside her.
“She’s being honest, both are sweethearts. Those boys have a really great friend group” and now you all could tell Maggie was genuinely considering it.
“I’m not making any promises, but we’ll see” and you all were squealing like teenage girls over the prospect of Maggie finding true love with either of the two boys.
You wouldn’t mind coming back together so soon for another wedding. You had come to enjoy and love the group around you. In fact you loved coming to Vermont all the time. The city was big and exciting when you were eighteen and exploring the world on your own for the very first time, but now it was just the city. It was big, noisy, smelly, and full of rude and crowded people. You longed for quiet nights in your shared apartment with Charlie but you longed for a large townhouse surrounded by autumn trees with your kids running through the yard more. You longed for the life Chris had here and you wouldn’t mind being so close to them and having your hand chosen family all in one place together. If you were to end up lucky enough to bear a child you knew deep in your bones you’d come here. The city was no place for a child, it was barely a place for you.
These thoughts stayed with you when the boys had appeared to pick you up. They had gotten Todd sloppily drunk, he has half asleep, arms slung over Knox and Meeks shoulders as they practically dragged him into the house and left him on the couch. Ann seemed to sober up instantly at the sight of him and began to take care of him. You could only smile as you found Charlie and wrapped yourself up in his arms. He smelled of pine and tobacco and you missed him more than ever for some reason. “Let’s get you home Mrs. Dalton”
“Sounds like a plan Mr. Dalton” you hummed back and allowed him to guide you out to the car and back to Chris and Knox’s place for the night. You pretended it was your actual home though, with all the room and smell of nature around you. No footsteps from the upstairs neighbors, just peace.
“Someone got a little drunk huh?” Charlie teased as he eased you down into the bed and you just giggled as his hands slowly grazed up your leg as he went to pull off your shoes.
“Only a little” you told him, toes wiggling as both heels had been removed and he was now dropping his blazer off his shoulders and to the ground. He watched as your hands reached for the buttons of your blouse, fumbling lightly as you struggled to unbutton each one.
“Need help” he smirked devilishly at you and suddenly your fuzzy brain remembered the sticky red symbol laid under your top. It wasn’t hard considering what you imagined cocky teenage Charlie was like, was smirking above you.
“Somehow he always makes it to third base folks” you teased as if you were talking to a crowd and Charlie just grinned as his own steady hands reached to free you from your blouse.
“It’s cause you simply can’t get enough of me doll” he told you and you rolled your eyes despite it being true. Charlie was a drug, one you were addicted too. You figured it would always be that way and you were lucky enough to end up with him.
Once he had the third button undone you knew he had spotted the red mark under your shirt. It was noticeable by the sharp intake of air he sucked in, his hands suddenly moving faster to undo each button and see more of the lighting bolt drawn steadily through your breasts. “Like what you see?”
“Baby” and then his hand was tucking under you, unhooking your bra with one hand like he always did just to impress you. Once both the bra and blouse had been removed you stared back at his blown out eyes, unmoving from you beneath him.
“Say something handsome” you urged and finally a soft smile broke across his face as he dipped down and met his mouth with your own.
“I love you so much” he grinned, a look of awe written all over his face.
“I love you more” you were telling him but he was shaking his head, kissing you hard until you were absolutely dizzy.
“That is absolutely not possible”

Once classes ended Charlie found himself walking to the schools pay phones, excited to call his friends, and see what they had been up to so far this week. It was the one thing he looked forward to. He wasn’t sure if it was because it made him feel closer to Neil or if he had gone so long without talking to them it was all he wanted to do. Either way he finally felt a semblance of happiness since the whole mess had happened and Charlie was just gonna have to make do, one phone call at a time.
Yet when he rounds the corner to find the line of pay phones he also finds the familiar girl with brunette hair cascading down her back and a soft smile on her face. He takes a moment to admire her, the way she acts fondly about the person on the other end, how her fingers curl around the coiled wire, as if the rest of her body was on autopilot. She was so God damn beautiful and Charlie was such a fool, a fool for not being able to let the old him out. The old him that would do everything in his power to charm her.
“Hey you” his voice is sultry smooth, arms caging her in, and landing on either side of the pay phone. She’s so close he can smell the strawberry shampoo in her hair and the faint smell of her rose perfume. She turns with a wide smile, eyes glimmering with amusement, face so close that if he moved forward just a few more inches he could kiss her.
“Oh that’s just some classmate of mine, thinks he has a chance or something” she says into the phone, devious grin flashing back at Charlie. He figures whoever is on the other end asked who he was and all he could do was roll his eyes at the girl.
“I know. If he bothers me I’ll let you know” she says with a soft chuckle and Charlie raises his eyebrows, glancing at the girl.
“Me? Bother you? No way” he mouths, a hushed whisper coming from his mouth and she bites her lips to suppress a laugh. The sight of it alone makes Charlie’s heart clench. After eating dinner with her that one night he had somehow let her in. Not close enough to bare his soul like he had with his own friends but enough to finally feel comforted by someone around here. He regretted not staying strong but Evelyn somehow was the exception.
“Alright, I’ll talk to you later. Love you” she says into the phone and Charlie raises his eyebrows in questioning again. Watching as she turns back around to hang up the phone, still caged in by the boys arms.
“Boyfriend?” he questions and she giggles out loud this time, warming Charlie over.
“Brother actually” she tells him and now he actually is more confused than before.
“He doesn’t go here?” he asks and Evelyn shakes her head.
“No he practically begged my parents to go to public school, plus he’s only eleven, so I don’t think they had it in them to mind. Babies of the family, they get away with everything” she says with amusement glimmering in her eyes and Charlie wishes he had grown up with siblings. It might’ve made growing up with his parents much more bearable.
“So if I bother you, you’re gonna sick an eleven year old on me?” he teases and Evelyn crosses her arms, shrugging.
“Possibly, he does have a mean swing. As his only sister, I would know” and that has Charlie laughing loudly, mentally cursing himself for still not asking the girl to the dance.
“I’ll take your word for it” he tells her and Evelyn grins right back.
“What brings you to the pay phones on this fine Wednesday afternoon?” she questions and Charlie smiles.
“Calling Todd, today’s his day” he says and Evelyn snorts which Charlie finds adorable.
“They have designated days? Is Knox only Fridays then?” she teases right back and Charlie shakes his head, brunette hair swinging.
“No Knox is Tuesdays. Friday nights he spends with his girl” and Evelyn doesn’t miss this way his eyes glance down at her lips when he says ‘his girl’.
“Convenient” she teases and he rolls his eyes at her once more.
“If you don’t mind waiting doll we can go grab some dinner after this” he tells her and Evelyn smiles, still basking in the feeling Charlie was willing to spend time with her.
“I was actually going to meet Nate for trivia on campus but you’re welcome to come” she says and Charlie chuckles, thinking of his room mate who had seemed very on edge lately. If he knew him better he would know why but he figured it was just school.
“I’ll walk you to it, trivia isn’t for me” he says and now Evelyn is the one rolling her eyes at him. Charlie just finds it cute though as he finally pushes himself up off the wall and reaches for the pay phone in front of her. She watches as he drops a few coins in the machine and dials a number familiar to only him.
“Yes, I’m calling for Todd Anderson” he says, raising his eyebrows at Evelyn who watches fondly. After a few minutes of waiting, Evelyn trying to poke Charlie and urge him to finish up already, Todd finally answers.
"There he is" Charlie grins when the familiar voice comes through the phone.
"Charles" Todd greets back with a grunt and Charlie can't help but laugh. He was sad his friend had come out of his shell after he was no longer there to see it. The things he would do to see Todd stand on that desk and stick it to Nolan like that. So much better than a phone call from God.
"How are you, turning in all your assignments on time I suppose?" Charlie teases, knowing Todd was still a goodie two shoes no matter how out going he had become. He could practically see Todd rolling his eyes now.
"Well yeah considering my punishment is to work study under Nolan for the rest of the year. I do all my homework in his office" and Charlie almost winces from the punishment because that must be horrible. That meant no study group with the guys and when you had a question you had to ask Nolan.
"The rest of the year, man all I got was my ass beat and pots and pans for two weeks" Charlie says recalling the punishment he recieved for his own big stunt. He couldn’t sit in his chair properly for a week but at least he had tried to make change. Evelyn just wears a confused look as he hears him say this.
"I guess outwardly disobeying Nolan is much much worse than asking for girls to attend Welton" Todd says which has Charlie laughing again.
"Yeah well much to Nolan's dismay, him kicking me out landed me in a school with girls. Joke's on him" Charlie jokes, looking at the only girl in this God forsaken school that he had somehow gotten close too. She wears a smirk, hearing him mention girls and she hopes more specifically her.
"I'm pretty sure the joke is on those poor girls. Charlie Dalton and his miserable flirting" Todd picks on the boy and Charlie doesn't have the heart to tell him that he had given up the flirting and confident act. That he was just as miserable as the rest of the world if not more.
"Miserable flirting, me? Never" Charlie tells the boy, and Evelyn gives him a confused look because this guy talking on the phone right now is still one she hasn’t gotten to know. Yet a flash of him appears when he spots the look on her face and reaches to grab a strand of her hair, curling it slowly around his fingers.
"Yeah right- Oh, here's Meeks" Todd says before the phone shuffles around.
"Hello Sir" his red headed firends voice floods through the phone and Charlie can't help but crack a smile.
"Meeks, where have you been? My Latin grade is rapidly dropping and my teachers are starting to wonder why" he says referring to all the times Meeks spent hours making sure Charlie not only finished his homework but at least understood it.
"It's a dead language Charles, they'll never question it" he says and Charlie feels that familair clench around his heart. The one that happens everytime he misses being at that school and with his friends.
"I suppose you're right Meeks, it must just be that I miss you bossing me around" Charlie says and he watches as the brunnete girl perks up in front of him. He actually still couldn't believe he told her about all of them. He just hadn't told her what happened to them quite yet.
"We all miss you Nuwanda” the boy says and Charlie smiles, losing his cool and confident act with his friends. Especially when they got sentimental like this.
“Yeah, I miss you guys too. We’ll try and make plans soon” and Evelyn doesn’t miss the sad look on his face and she realizes just how much he misses his friends.
“Okay, bye guys” he says one last time before hanging up the phone and flashing a smile her way. Suddenly he’s distracted, no longer the boy who was just teasing her.
“You got your ass beat?” Evelyn questions, hoping to bring back that smile on his face. When he chuckles softly she realizes it just might’ve worked.
“That’s a story for another time, let’s get you to trivia” he says, arm falling over her shoulders and ready to escort her throughout the school. Evelyn smiles softly at him and shocks Charlie when her hand reaches up and laces with the one hanging off her shoulders.
“You’re different with your friends you know?” she tells him and Charlie nods slowly.
“Yeah well, they’ve known me for my entire life. Never got a chance to hide who I was from them” he tells her and Evelyn sighs, loving her new friendship with the boy but hating entirely that he wasn’t himself with her still.
“Is that you admitting how you hide your true self from us?” she questions again as they round the corner, eyes on the rec room set up for trivia this week.
“It was never a secret Ev, I just have a lot going on” he tells her as they push through the door and before she can question him even further they both realize fairly quickly trivia is not what’s happening here.
Alone beside a table is Nate holding a poster. A bouquet of flowers and some balloons sit on the table beside him, his eyes are hopeful until they land on Evelyn with Charlie’s arm wrapped around her shoulders and fingers laced with her own. Evelyn takes a moment to register exactly what’s happening but when she reads ‘Ev, will you go to the Valentines Dance with me?’ she’s quick to remove herself from Charlie.
“Nate, what’s going on?” she questions and Charlie takes one look at him and realizes what he should of when he first started here. Nate is in love with Evelyn.
“Uh, I’m trying to ask you to the dance” he mutters, eyes darting between the two and Evelyn is approaching him, almost in a way to not scare him.
“Why?” she questions and Nate’s eyes are quick to dart to Charlie, embarrassed that the boy was here to witness this.
“I’m gonna go” Charlie mutters and is out the door lighting fast as Evelyn searches Nate for answers.
“I just, I assumed no one had asked you yet” he says, arm gesturing to where Charlie had just made his great escape. Yet Evelyn doesn’t get what he means.
Nate means that he had assumed Charlie hadn’t already beaten him to it but based on the way the both of them walked through the door he assumed wrong. Evelyn takes it as him being good old reliable Nate. Her dear friend who doesn’t want her to attend a dance on her own. Her friend willing to give up his own date to help her. She still doesn’t get that he’s in love with her.
“Nate that’s sweet you don’t want me to go alone” she starts, trying to reach out for him and Nate realizes quickly his mistake.
“No I-”
“But I’m hosting the dance, I can’t take a date. It’s kinda business for me, not pleasure” and Nate snaps his mouth close. There was no use fighting, he’d already humiliated himself enough. At least this way he knew Evelyn wasn’t going with Charlie either. In fact she wasn’t going with anyone.
“Oh, well in that case” he says, arms starting to wrinkle the poster in his hands that he felt stupid for holding.
“It was such a sweet gesture though. I’ll save you a dance even” she tells him and Nate shakes his head with a chuckle, tossing the now mangled poster in the garbage.
“It’s fine, don’t worry about me” he says and Evelyn gives him a soft smile before pulling him in a hug.
“You’re a good friend Nate and the next dance I don’t plan, I’m all yours” she says and Nate feels his heart shatter once more because maybe everyone was right. He had waited far too long and now he never stood a chance with her.
“Sounds like a plan” he says pulling back, trying to hide the sadness written all over his face. Evelyn just smiles before looking back at the door, he assumes for Charlie.
“Well since there really isn’t any trivia, I better be off to do some homework” she tells him and Nate nods, collecting the roses and balloons on the table.
“Okay, I’ll see you later” he bids her and she smiles and waves before scurrying back off. Nate sighs and looks at the flowers and string of balloons in his hands. With a swift movement he dumps them in the trash right along with the poster and officially gives up.
Not wanting to face his room mate knowing the rejection he just faced from a girl they both liked, he starts for the doors to the outside. Determined to spend the rest of the day moping in his self pity alone.
Tumblr media
It’s dark by the time Nate makes it back to campus. Any later and it would’ve been past curfew. He still hadn’t gotten over what had happened and worst of all he no longer had a dorm to himself. He shared it with the very guy that was stealing the girl he loved whether he realized he was or wasn’t. Yet when he reaches the door and doesn’t see any light flooding out the bottom of it, he sighs a sigh of relief.
Slipping inside as quietly as he can he changes into some pajamas and crawls into his bed. He still feels the heavy weight of crying from behind his eyes but he wouldn’t risk Charlie hearing him. So he tried to get comfy, erase the image of Evelyn denying him and friend zoning him all in one go. There was no way now he could ever prove to her his feelings, he was already in too deep.
“You said you were just friends” Nate stiffens at Charlie’s voice filling the dark room, assuming he had been asleep this whole time.
“That wasn’t a lie” Nate responds after a moment and he hears Charlie sigh.
“You should have told me you liked her” and Nate wears a confused look even though Charlie can’t see it.
“Why, you clearly like her too?” Nate says, his voice clipped and holding an anger he didn’t want to take out on the boy because Evelyn wasn’t his property.
“Yeah but if you had said when I asked, I never would’ve gotten close to her. You don’t do that to friends” and Nate feels his heart break once more this afternoon because before Evelyn and Charlie, he was hopeful for a best friend and he had let that get away from. He had spent so much time resenting him to even realize Charlie might’ve finally let him in.
“We’re friends?” Nate can’t help but ask and Charlie chuckles in the night air.
“Yeah man, as much as I hate to admit it. I feel like a real shit one right now for falling for your girl like that though” and it’s finally out there. A confirmation and in the open for Nate to hear. Somehow it’s more comforting to know then harmful.
“I don’t blame you, I’ve loved her since I was thirteen. She’s one in a million” Nate says staring at the ceiling he can barely make out in the darkness.
“Why didn’t you tell her then? All those years ago?” Charlie questions and Nate shrugs into his sheets, thinking of thirteen year old him too scared to say something to her.
“I felt silly. We had been friends so long and I thought it’d be weird. After a while I just didn’t want to face rejection” Nate admits, knowing how lame he sounds. Charlie wished he could understand that, considering he told everyone exactly how he felt about them his whole life.
“This is coming from your friend, not the guy going after your girl, but you waited too long man. You became someone trustworthy to her, someone to always fall back on, reliable. Once a girl starts seeing you like that you become the guy she goes to when other guys hurt her” Nate knows it isn’t a bad thing but Charlie is right. You either become reliable in a relationship or reliable to the point of a brother, and that’s why getting out of the friend zone was so hard.
“So I shouldn’t have waited around?” he asks curiously, realizing Charlie was wiser than he expected.
“No man and you shouldn’t wait around for anything. We have one life, why waste it? You never know when it’s going to end so everyday spent waiting is one that’s lost! Carpe Diem! Seize the day!” Charlie rants, excitement hitching in his voice, and when his words resonate within him he freezes. For the first time since Neil had died that burning passion had found its way out of him and in its midst he realized exactly what he had been doing. He hadn’t been seizing the day, he was wasting it. Wasting it because he was heartbroken and if Neil could see him now he’d be pissed.
“It sounds like you know” Nate tells him, feeling the statement rattle around in his brain and hearing Charlie’s heavy breathing from across the room.
“I do Nate and no life is worth living if you can’t get the things you want out of it” he says, finally realizing exactly why Neil might’ve made the decision he did.
“Have you Charlie?” Nate asks and Charlie starts to laugh. Laugh at his own pure stupidity for wasting all this God damn time.
“No but I plan on starting tomorrow if you want to start with me?” Charlie asks and Nate grins from ear to ear. Evelyn may never see him the way he wants him to but he finally had a friend. One he made on his own. He could get over her with a friend.
“Yeah, plus I’d like to finally see you getting out there” Nate tells him and Charlie wears a matching smile that the boy cannot see.
“Can I tell you something Nate, something you won’t tell anyone until I’m ready? I just need to hear myself say it” Charlie asks, his voice desperate and pleading. All around sad and Nate can tell from across the room.
“Yeah man, whatever you need” and Charlie feels the tears pool in his eyes. He stares at his own ceiling and takes a moment to breathe.
“My best friend Neil died. He was just seventeen and when something like that happens you find life isn’t really worth living for if they’re not around” Nate freezes at the words, the truth hidden deep within the boy who had seemed so broken. Now he knew why.
“I’m so sorry Charlie. No one should lose anyone that young” Nate offers and Charlie smiles, his tears sliding down the sides of his face and into his pillow.
“Yeah but if he was here right now he’d be telling you the same thing. He didn’t want to waste a second of his life and even if he died so young I can promise you he didn’t” and for the first time in months Charlie feels a weight being lifted from his chest. The suffocating feeling he had lived with for so long.
“Carpe diem then” Nate says, finally resonating with Charlie and the truth that he carries. He was a broken man who was just trying to find his way. It can’t be easy to lose your best friend and be expelled all at once.

Day 7/8
You woke up the next morning to a damp wash cloth pressed against your skin. Eyes fluttering open to see your soft and handsome Charlie smiling at you as he wiped away the lipstick that had been left on your skin. It had been smeared from Charlie and your slumber but waking up to see him like this you’d do that every night if you could. No words had to be shared as your hand reached to run your fingers through his hair, the lipstick now almost gone, only the slightest red hue left on your skin. He was entirely too perfect and the memories of living your life here came to your mind again.
“What do you think about moving?” you suddenly asked, voice still lazy with sleep.
“Moving?” he questioned, still tracing the cloth over where there had been marks on your skin.
“Yeah, like out of the city” you said and Charlie thought about it for a moment, the idea not entirely impossible.
“I wouldn’t hate it. We’d probably make less money than we do if I found a job out of the city but you work as well so we’re still bringing in more money than most” he said and you could only smile, your heart aching over leaving the Times but also soaring over the idea of moving to the next stage of life. You’ve already accomplished more than you ever expected.
“That’s true, it would be nice” you hummed in delight, hand still softly combing through his hair. Charlie smiled at your blissed out look and pressed a kiss between your breasts.
“Where you thinking of moving sweetheart?” he asked you, chin resting on your stomach.
“Here” you said like it was the simplest thing in the world but Charlie tensed above you. You could feel his heart rate accelerating against your hip and slowly you lifted your head to furrow your eyebrows at him.
“Is everything okay?” you asked softly and he wore a nervous look, almost unable to make eye contact with you as he processed his thoughts.
“Baby, you know how hard it is for me to come here” he began to say and you were sighing, head falling back into the pillows.
“But everyone is here Char. Knox and Chris, Todd and Ann. I love the area, the scenery. I want a big beautiful town house for our kids and the simple life. I want a life here” you told him, tears burning behind your eyes.
“It looks amazing baby, I know, but I grew up here. I know it seems like the American dream but reality is lives were crushed here, my life was crushed here” he argued and you refused to lift your head and look up at him. You didn’t want him to see the tears that were almost slipping out the sides of your eyes and down onto the pillows.
“We could fix that. We have the power to make it different for our kids and for you. Neil’s death can’t keep you from happiness forever Charlie” and your words stung, you knew they did, and maybe they weren’t entirely fair. Yet it wasn’t fair to continue using Neil as an excuse to hate the world because Neil deserved to be remembered as a beacon of hope. A lesson on living life to the fullest and not missing out on anything. Now here Charlie was, not taking an opportunity because of a sadness that he’s carried for ten years.
“I am happy baby, I swear” but you were rolling away from him, tears slipping onto the pillow and out of his sight.
“Then why can’t we be happy here?” you asked and he couldn’t even answer because he didn’t have one. At least not an answer you would accept because it would prove you were right.
“I’m sorry” he softly said but you couldn’t entirely take it right now. You didn’t want an apology if things wouldn’t change.
“I gotta get ready for the rehearsal” you told him before getting up and locking yourself in the bathroom to be alone. You needed to be alone.
It wasn’t long until everyone was downstairs and sharing a late breakfast before having to go to the rehearsal. Knox and Chris clocked instantly that you and Charlie weren’t talking but they knew not to say anything. Everyone just accepted the silence the whole way to the church and everyone did too when they realized it as well. Chris desperately wanted to get you alone and ask why but based on the devastated look on your face she knew it was better not to ask just yet. Ann on the other hand didn’t have a single clue.
“Oh Y/N, I promise this won’t take long” she whispered over to you, positively giddy over getting to practice her wedding.
“I know Ann, I’m fine” you promised her, a forced smile upon your face.
“Clearly” the sarcastic response from Chris had both you and Ann looking at her with shock. “What, you’ve had a long face all morning”
“It was a long morning, I don’t want to talk about it” you told her, arms crossing over your chest and Chris sighed.
“Look I’m sure your behavior is justified but we need to get through this first” Chris told you and you nodded, feeling a bit like a scolded child but understanding.
“Alright, let’s get everyone in place” and that was how you found yourself stood beside your husband, moments from walking down the aisle. Good memories and bad ones intermingling, and both of you to stubborn to look at each other.
Ann is discussing details with the wedding planner who is just as blonde and bright eyed as her. Knox and Chris stand in front of you, soft whispers and large smiles on their faces. It pains you to watch but you haven’t said a word to Charlie since this morning and you weren’t going to start now. You try to distract yourself with Maggie who won’t stop glancing at Meeks who had gotten stuck walking with Ann’s junior bridesmaid Laine, her sixteen year old cousin. Thankfully later in the night you had remembered to inform the girls that Pitts had mentioned a girl named Kathy and she was stuck with said red head. Now it looked like she was seriously considering it.
“Join arms everyone, and remember your counts!” the wedding planner was announcing and you spotted each couple pairing arms. You could feel Charlie’s stare and you stayed unmoving.
“Come on you two, don’t be shy” and then Chris was turning around and shooting a glare your way. Sighing you joined your arm with your husbands, his other hand coming to rest on it. A peace offering and the comfort it provided you made your heart clench. The worst thing about being upset with him is he was the only one who comforted you the best.
“I know you’re mad at me, but we have to do this for Todd” he whispered to you and you sighed, a sign of defeat as you heard the bridal march start to be played and the doors to the church open.
The wedding planner barked out orders as each pair walked through the church doors. The church was empty and cold but at least Charlie provided some warmth as you memorized which foot to lead with, how many paces you should be behind Knox and Chris, and exactly how fast you should be walking. You tried to remember your own wedding rehearsal but it was hard to recall considering you were so jittery with excitement that day. Much like Ann who was bound to be the most perfect bride. You envied her for it. To be so hopeful and beaming for a beautiful future with the man you love. Not knowing how complicated things could become between you and the other person.
It wasn’t just the moving thing. You and Charlie had been on different sides of the same path for a while now. The infertility had been killing you. Slowly chipping away at your entire being. You didn’t want to be that couple in a sad, quiet, empty, apartment, in a big city and no one to share it with. Charlie was enough but you wanted more. More of you and him in the world but he feared the world because of Neil and you feared how that could destroy the entire outcome of your relationship. Maybe some small part of you thought moving here could somehow magically help you get pregnant. Whatever reasoning it was you just wanted to be with the people you loved and be happy. Not go back to your upper east side apartment that felt so cold. You wanted little Johnny down the street and Ann to bring over warm cookies. You wanted a family even if you couldn’t have your own.
“Baby will you please talk to me” Charlie begged once the rehearsal was over. You had been waiting outside the church, arms freezing in the autumn wind. You felt Charlie drape your coat over your shoulders.
“There isn’t much to talk about” you told him, mind still buzzing with your realization. Your thoughts scared you and now you were stuck with them.
“There is everything to talk about, you can’t simply be mad over just the moving thing” he groaned out, hands tugging at his chestnut hair.
“And why not? Is it not justified to be sick and tired of a big city and a job I can’t even use my real name for!” you finally snapped, head turning to face him. What use was it to be a writer for the Times and have no one know it was you doing such amazing work?
“You’ve never complained about this before, who is to say the local paper here wouldn’t be the same?” Charlie said and you finally looked at him. The pain behind his eyes was the reason you had spent so long not looking at him.
“Maybe it will be the same but at least we’ll be here surrounded by people that love us” you told him, eyes filling with tears.
“Is that what this is about? To be closer to my friends and have some weird blended family thing going?” he asked, shoulders shaking as he tried his best not to yell. He had been so worked up over you ignoring him, he was trying not to lose it.
“Maybe it is, because I’d much rather have a weird blended family than stiff dinners with your parents and disapproving looks from mine! This chosen family we have here is all I ever needed” you told him, head tipping to the sky to keep the tears at bay.
“So I’m not enough?” he finally asked, voice seemingly calm for such a loaded sentence.
“Of course you are Charlie but that big apartment. Three rooms just for us to fill one. It’s a constant reminder that it’ll be nothing more” and the weight of the conversation hit Charlie like a brick. The tears blurring your vision and cheeks so red from the cold.
“Baby we’ll have kids and even if we don’t you’ll still be reminded of that here” he said, trying to step near you and comfort you. Yet you backed away before he could.
“Yeah but at least here we have friends and nieces and nephews. More people to fill that hole in my heart Charlie because it’s swallowing me whole right now. It’s sucking all the life out of me and I don’t know how to get it to stop” the tears were pouring down your face now and Charlie felt his heart shatter at the sight of you.
“Why didn’t you tell me this?” his voice was broken, his own tears stinging at the back of his eyes.
“How am I supposed to? How am I supposed to look you in the eye and tell you I’m miserable because we can’t have kids?” you asked him, the backs of your hands wiping at the tears streaming down your face.
“You can tell me anything baby, I’m always going to be there for you. No matter what it is because I can’t lose you too” and the weight of Neil slapped both of you again.
“I’m going to walk back, I’ll see you there” you told him and Charlie went to reach for you but you stepped out of the way. “Let me go”
And he did even though it went against his better judgement. He knew you needed to be alone right now and that was what hurt the most. To know that you’ve been hurting all these months and he was too blinded by his own pain to notice. He hadn’t cared about the no pregnancy thing as much because he was scared to put kids so innocent in the world that could be hurt like Neil. He felt relieved that he didn’t have that burden of keeping a child so hopeful that they don’t want to take their own life. While he was seeing it as burden you were seeing it as heart break and he hadn’t been there for you when he should have. Now here you were on opposite sides a war that should never be fought. All he needed was you and if he didn’t fix this soon he would lose you.
You were thankful Charlie had brought you your coat or else this walk would have been freezing. It was exactly what you needed though. The fall breeze numbed you in a way that made things a bit more bearable. The autumn leaves in the trees were still vibrant but more littered the ground than they did branches these days. As you got further into town you noticed it was a buzzing more than normal until you saw lots of red and white indicating celebration of football. Homecoming more than likely and as the marching band began to play and girls began to cheer you wanted to be further away from the commotion. “Do you need a ride?”
“What?” you found yourself saying as you spotted the man beside you. His red hair was gelled back perfectly, tie tight, shirt pressed, and long jacket hanging over his shoulders. Common for lawyers your age, it was almost intimidating how put together he currently looked.
“You look a little distraught, figured I’d offer a ride” he said motioning to his car. Eyes falling on the building behind you, you spotted the window that proved your previous assumption. A law firm.
“I um, I’m not entirely sure what’s going on with me at the moment” you offered with a sad laugh and he could only chuckle as he began to remove one of his leather gloves.
“Sadly I know exactly what that feels like, I’m Richard” and he was offering you a hand which you politely shook back.
“Y/N” you told him back and he smiled before nodding his head to his car.
“I’m still offering that ride if you need” he told you and you sighed, eyes glancing at the chaos of the town and the rumbling engine of his car facing the direction of peace.
“As long as Maple Ave isn’t to far out of your way” you said to him and he looked almost surprised you had agreed before moving to open the passenger door for you.
“Not at all” he informed you before shutting you in. You watched as he walked back around before getting in the drivers side and shifting the car into gear.
“So Cameron & Son’s Law Firm” you said gesturing to the window he was now rolling away from.
“Yeah, I started it with my Dad a few years back. The name ended up to be useless since he passed last year” he told you and you instantly felt guilty for bringing it up.
“I’m sorry for your loss” and he shook his head, eyes trained on the road.
“Don’t be, it was kind of freeing for me. I learned a lot about life this past year that I wish I would’ve known” he told you and you nodded as you looked down at your hands.
“What about you?” he asked and you gave him a confused look, surprised he was suggesting you were a working woman in this day and age. “I can spot a member of the work force when I see one. We all wear the same mind numbing look on our faces.
“Journalist, for the Times actually” and he wore a surprised expression, eyes glancing over to you.
“Really, have I read any of your work?” he asked curiously and you shrugged.
“If you’ve read any of Dean Manning’s work than yes” and the low chuckle that came from the boy beside you almost surprised you.
“Screwed you on the pen name huh. No works published under the marvelous name Y/N…” and then he trailed off realizing he didn’t know your last name.
“Dalton, Y/N Dalton” you told him and something else entirely washed over his face as he now glanced at you even more.
“As in Charlie Dalton?” he asked, voice a bit strained and almost nervous.
“Yes, that’s my husband” and if you weren’t crazy he had definitely started to speed up in the direction of your departure.
“Of course it is” he practically laughed to himself and you felt confusion wash over you until you recalled the name, the red hair.
“Richard Cameron” you practically said to yourself before realization dawned on you. “You’re him, wow. I never would have guessed”
“Look that was a long time ago, I’m sure you’ve heard things that I’m not proud of anymore” he said, hands squeezing the steering wheel until his knuckles were white.
“Calm down Cameron, please. My husband and me are on the outs right now so we’re kind of a team” and he calmed only slightly as he turned onto Maple Ave.
“He isn’t here is he?” he asked nervously and you shook your head.
“He’s probably still at the church for Todd’s wedding rehearsal stuff” you said and he sighed and looked over to you.
“So you’re staying at Knox’s place” he knew where it was, a former alum in the same line of work as him. He wasn’t entirely off his radar.
“Yes, actually” you said as he now drove with a purpose, knowing the destination in mind.
“Look I’m sorry, if I had known I would’ve never offered the ride. I keep my distance out of respect” he started to blabber but you held up a hand as he pulled to a stop in front of Knox’s house.
“Don’t worry about it Cameron, my husband has become a gentle man. I love him with everything in me and I know he would be thankful you got me home safe” and he nodded even though he still felt little comfort.
“If you could tell Todd congratulations for me. He deserves it” and you nodded, hand reaching to pop the door open.
“I’m glad I met you Cameron” you told him and he seemed shocked as you got out of the car.
“I haven’t been called Cameron so much since I graduated Welton” he told you and you could only smile.
“Brings back some good memories huh?” you told him, head leaned down into the window.
“Yeah, it does” and you accepted this before offering a wave and shutting the door. He waited like a gentleman until you were in the home before driving away. It looked rushed but you were sure it was fear of reaction to his presence. It was clear he had changed from the man your husband had known. Maybe all the boys had after those days. You wished there was some way to relieve their pain but maybe it was destiny. Maybe Neil’s death put them all on the path they were meant to be on. They all became the people they were meant to be whether it was what they wanted or not. The only good thing was at least they still had each other.
Well at least most of them did.

Charlie nearly jumps out of his skin when hands shake him awake. Eyes darting open only to not be able to spot anything in the dark room. His heart is practically in his throat as he registers he’s still in his room where he is meant to be and the dark figure looming above him is none other than Nate’s. Finally allowing himself to calm and sink back into his covers, he lets out a deep sigh.
“There is so many other ways you can wake a guy up” Charlie groans, hands coming to rub at his eyes. That’s when he sees it’s nearly midnight on the alarm clock beside him. Not so long until Valentine’s day.
“Sorry, but get dressed” Nate whispers, shuffling back to his side of the room where he sees him start putting on his shoes.
“Any reason in particular?” Charlie asks as he sits up and Nate just laughs.
“Yes dingus. It’s the night before the school dance. We have no homework and Mr. Lancaster took sleeping pills. That means it’s time to party” Nate tells him, referring to the teacher that monitors the dorm floor. He was much different from Dr. Hager but he did pretty much the same.
“Party, and how does that work around here” Charlie says knowing it was nearly impossible to party back at Welton. Nate just grins in the night and throws Charlie his jacket.
“Dress warm”
It’s not long until the boys are sneaking out the dorm floor. Finding their way downstairs and out the entrance. Snow falls slowly and Charlie is glad he had worn a sweatshirt under his coat. By the time they make it to the tree line and see the flicker of flashlights he finds himself experiencing some intense deja vu. Yet that all goes away when amongst the small crowd is Evelyn. She’s bundled up tightly with a blanket low hung off her shoulders. The green hat atop her head brings out her hazel eyes even in the dark of the night. Charlie feels the breath get knocked out of him as he spots her. He realizes he had never seen her in pants until now and it makes his mouth go slack.
“There you guys are, what took so long?” Violet seethes, teeth practically chattering as she stays tucked up under Martin’s arm.
“New guy here had a bunch of questions” Nate jokes as he moves to join his friends. There isn’t many people within the small crowd that Charlie doesn’t know. Only two he hadn’t really gotten to know. A blonde girl named Amy from his Math class and one of the basketball players Eli, who had his arms wrapped around Laurie. Jay Adam’s apparently never asked or Eli just beat him to it. Either way she still didn’t end up with small Nick Harrison.
“Hey you” Evelyn smiles up at Charlie as she approaches him. He does his best to smile back as he freezes in the night. Her small hand reaching out and smoothing down the front of his jacket.
“It’s freezing” he tells her and she giggles lightly, arm hooking with his own.
“Don’t worry, we have ways of warming you up” and Charlie’s cheeks flush red in the dark of the night. He knows that wasn’t the way she meant but then again she still probably knew exactly what she said. The small group moving deeper into the woods where you could no longer see the faint lights coming from the school windows.
Pretty soon they reach a clearing and Evelyn leads him to a log sat on the ground. As Charlie moves to sit beside her, Nate and Marty begin work on a fire in front of them, and he realizes fairly quickly that it had become a makeshift campfire set up.
“Shouldn’t be long until the fire is going but this should warm you up for now” she tells him softly, revealing the silver flask from her coat pocket. Charlie raises his eyebrows at her as she hands it to him.
“This is yours?” he can’t help but question and Evelyn laughs.
“Yeah, I’m not much for wine coolers like those girls over there” she points across the fire to the other log where Violet and Laurie had already cracked open a few. “Marty has a fake and he sneaks them into the woods every time we want to celebrate”
“Of course he does” Charlie says with a chuckle before twisting the top off and letting the liquid burn down his throat. When he goes to pass it back Evelyn is quick to take a sip as well, and Charlie’s throat dries because his lips had just been there, and it was extremely sexy to see a girl not choke on her liquor.
“Hey, better share” Nate calls out as the fire catches and Evelyn giggles before tossing it to him. They both watch as Nate unscrews the cap and tips the liquid back in his mouth. It’s when his face screws up tightly and a deep cough leaves his throat, Evelyn and Charlie die of laughter.
“Yeah get your jollies” he sneers, arm moving to wipe his mouth and pass the flask right back.
“Don’t worry big guy, the girls got some wine coolers for you over there” Charlie teases and Nate rolls his eyes yet he can’t help but be happy. Charlie and him had gotten really close after their talk and even if he still did love Evelyn it was so much easier to bear now.
“I’m surprised you aren’t sleeping and stressing about tomorrow” Charlie says even though he supposed by now it already is tomorrow.
“I can stress in the morning, since I have to work the dance it’s better to enjoy myself now” Evelyn tells him and Charlie smiles, shivering lightly in the night air.
“Still cold?” Evelyn asks innocently, eyes batting up at him, and Charlie smiles.
“I’ve faced worse” he says, remembering all those freezing nights spent in the cave. They were all worth it though.
“Yeah well I can’t have my co planner sick” Evelyn says and next thing Charlie knows, she’s wrapping the edge of her blanket around him. Scooting up flush to his body and huddling into his own warmth. His heart nearly doubles in speed as he pulls the blanket close to them both and wrapping them inside. “Better?”
“Way better” he whispers, face so close to her own all he can think about is kissing her. The way the fire reflects off her eyes is enough to make his insides melt, but before he can get to lost in his head he’s pulled right back out.
“So Charlie, does Welton have anything like this? Some secret party getaway?” Violet asks from across the fire and Charlie turns to face her.
“Not really, I mean me and my friends used to sneak out to this old cave but it was too strict for us to ever really have a secret hangout spot. Our dean had guard dogs even, barked if we ever tried to leave our rooms after curfew” Charlie tells them and majority of them are shocked to even hear of this. An actual fact about the boy in front of them who had spent so long trying to hideaway.
“How’d you sneak out then?” Marty asks, freeing a cigarette from his letterman jacket and lighting it.
“Dog treats” Charlie smirks and the group around the fire is laughing at the image.
“Probably wasn’t popular enough to know about the best party spot on campus” Nate teases, settling on a log beside Amy since it was the last spot open.
“Oh you’ve got it all wrong Nathan Price. I was a living legend at that school. If there was a party spot, I would’ve been the one to make it” Charlie says, the old confidence slurring in his tone. The flash of amusement in his eyes is enough to convince everyone around him.
“Is that why you got your ass beat?” Evelyn asks and the rest of the group wears confused looks at the mention of this.
“Not exactly. I wrote an article in the school paper without permission and during the assembly to address it I snuck an old phone in and when it rang I answered it in front of the entire student body and staff. Told the dean it was a phone call from God, and they should allow girls at Welton” and as he recalls the story, the rest of them laugh harder and harder. Evelyn even is shocked by the outgoing stunt the boy had pulled.
“That definitely deserved an ass beating” Evelyn agrees and Charlie chuckles, feeling that old confidence surge through him and settle in his bones. Which may explain why he takes the arm pressed against her and wraps it slowly around her waist and out of sight from everyone else.
“Yeah, I’m man enough to admit that even I had gone a little too far with that one. My friends were pissed” he says, a flash of Neil’s face as he limped back to his dorm room. The sadness in his eyes as he feared for the worst. As if Evelyn senses his sadness she snuggles in closer to his side which in turn causes Charlie to squeeze at her waist.
“Why would they be mad?” Laurie questions and Charlie takes a moment before deciding to answer.
“I had signed the article with the name of our secret club, while none of them had no idea I was writing it let alone publishing it. Hence the phone call from God so I could take the blame and protect all of them” he says and Evelyn’s heart soars for the kind boy beside her. One she really would’ve liked to know five months ago.
“I take it back, apparently he is a legend” Nate says as a cigarette gets passed to him and Charlie just laughs with the shake of his head.
“Not anymore, I just so happened to get myself kicked out and dethroned” Charlie says with a soft shrug.
“Why not try for legend status here?” Amy giggles around the puff of smoke from the cigarette Nate had just given her.
“It’s too late for that, I’ve already been stuck in the lame planning committee. My reputation can never come back from that” and Evelyn gasps before knocking her shoulder into his ribs to which he laughs.
“Such a jerk” she shakes her head as the group starts to talk amongst themselves and Evelyn grabs the cigarette Amy has passed her way.
“You smoke?” Charlie questions, more surprised by her tonight than he had in the entirety of knowing her.
“Only on special occasions, especially when I need to relax” and then she was sucking a deep drag, the lit end glowing in the dark night.
“Do you smoke?” she questioned right back around the puff of smoke she blew into the air.
“I did. When I got kicked out I had to abandon my cigarette stash at the school. Worst part is knowing my old roommate was such a goodie two shoes he’ll never get any use out of it. Feels like I wasted them twice” Charlie says and Evelyn chuckles as she taps some ash off the end.
“Well it’s a nasty habit to have anyway. I hate kissing boys who taste like smoke” she said with the soft shake of her head and Charlie was quickly smirking at her.
“Got some plans to kiss me doll?” he asks and she blushes only briefly before laughing into the night air. Without responding she guides her hand to him, cigarette pressed between her fingers. The palm of her hand meets his chin only slightly as her fingers press to his lips and allow him to inhale a puff.
“Not anymore” she said with a mischievous grin, pulling the cigarette back and passing it back to Amy.
“You’re killing me” he told her with a sincerity she was still getting used to. Out of nowhere the last few days Charlie had really come out of his shell. He was approaching her more often than not, spending time with Nate outside of their dorm, and eating lunch with them. It had been a big turnaround.
“That just might be my goal” she tells him and Charlie is squeezing her waist where he still holds her to him tightly. He hadn’t been cold once since she had been there.
“I’m not worried, girls can’t resist me” he says with a coolness that had been so foreign until now. Evelyn just shakes her head and goes to take another sip from the flask.
“I’d like to say that isn’t true but I wouldn’t be here if it was” she says and Charlie laughs into the night air. Tonight had been the first time in a long time he hadn’t felt overwhelmed by the sadness of Neil. He could just be him and maybe begin to accept his life for what it was.
“Still no kiss then?” he asked, smirk heavy on the lips Evelyn so desperately did want to kiss.
“Ask me again later” she tells him and Charlie quickly pumps his free hand in the air.
“I can live with that answer” he tells her and Evelyn smiles before turning her attention back to some of her friends. Easy conversation flows through the cold forest and laughs echo in the late night air. It was the same and yet entirely different and Charlie found that he could be comforted by it while also saddened. You don’t get over things in one night but each new day was becoming easier and easier. Plus being in the woods somehow made it easier, made him feel closer to the boys, and that’s when he remembered.
I went into the woods because I wanted to live deliberately.
