Well first we will have a picture because everyone like pictures

Osmium, while categorized as a native element, typically occurs in alloys with the formula (Os, Ir, Ru) and it smells awful when you burn it, apparently. It's a metallic mineral, as you can see, and it naturally occurs in mafic igneous rocks (closer in composition to the rocks in the mantle, essentially)

There are older peoples than the krill, on Fundament.

Not much older and no more native, Taox knows as she stands beside the mound with her fingers interlaced. Fundament is the wreckage after a storm already, species thrown together and dashed apart. And the closer they look to your own species, the easier it is to know what kills them, so krill fight krill, and everyone else fights everyone else. The barrow held a dead killer, or a dead diplomat, or whatever other things one might choose to call a dead ruler.

She had taken a boat out to the barrow for inspiration. An engineering problem she could not immediately see her way around. One of her technicians walked idly around the other side of the barrow, her spines just barely visible above the muddy dirt. Taox did not expect any direct knowledge to come from the old site except perhaps for some reassurance that it had not been flooded yet. A few tendrils of green seaweed have opportunistically taken root on the dirt. Taox does not know whether they do so naturally or whether she is seeing evolution before her eyes. Many things are a mystery, to the krill.

The barrow does not provide inspiration. Just when it starts to provide morbidity (we will all be like this, or worse; we will die without graves) she wrenches her thoughts back. I can adjust the lightning flow in this spot, to reduce strain on this spot, which can be used in this way to solve my problem. Yes. Idle thoughts, even grim ones, help. * Millennia later, comes the Osmium Traitor. Living memorial, mind dug open like dirt for a grave, her memories replaced with an echoing string of curses. Savathûn’s puppet she is, and every time one dies, the queen creates another.

Savathûn herself watches the Guardians kill this traitor and takes double satisfaction. Once from imbaru, once from her bitter anger at Taox who almost sold her, Taox who loved and left her, Taox, the only creature in history who ever really made Sathona feel like a child. Bitter humor, held on for the lives of civilizations.

Just like Guardians. Each time one dies, the queen creates another. She will not allow Taox’s name to die, and in the way of the Hive it does not matter whether this is torture or honor.

Another Osmium Traitor rises, living, unthinking tomb to Taox.

The Proto-Hive (Krill)

We know about the history and birth of the Hive thanks to the guardians who raided the Dreadnaught and found calcified fragments, with that we were able to create the Books of Sorrow.

Long ago, the proto-Hive crashed their homeworld into Fundament, ostensibly to hide from something unknown. The shards of this homeworld became a number of continents that floated upon a sea called the Fundament Ocean within a layer of the gas giant's atmosphere.

Eventually the proto-Hive built a meager civilization upon them and forgot their old history and roots.

Besides that, Fundament was home to hundreds of other intelligent species, and Fundament's fifty-two moons were inhabited by a space faring species called the Ammonites who were overseen by the Traveler at that time.

The Ammonites were bony, six-armed cephalopods who evolved on an icy moon of Fundament. At some point, the Traveler arrived at the planet and became a patron of the Ammonites, who built an advanced spacefaring civilization with paracausal technology that spanned all of Fundament's fifty-two moons.

Life was quick and harsh for the proto-Hive. Their natural lifespan rarely exceeded ten Fundament-years, though females who ate "mother jelly" became able to spawn and live longer. In terms of environmental hazards, Fundament was almost inhospitable. The Fundament Ocean was toxic, the skies were eternally stormy, the rain poisonous and sometimes corrosive, lightning had enough power to vaporize anyone it struck, "living clouds" called Stormjoys (were non-sapient predatory creatures native to the gas giant) would prey on the populace, and the proto-Hive frequently warred with each other.

The progenitors of the contemporary Hive that we know were Xi Ro, Sathona, and Aurash, the three daughters of the Osmium King who ruled the continent called the Osmium Court.

What Metal Makes Precious?

According to the Jewel Smiths, precious metals are those elemental metals that have high economic value. In some cases, the metals have been used as currency. In other cases, the metal is precious because it is valued for different uses and is rare.

Gold: Gold, a transition metal, is a rare metal found in certain parts of the world. The biggest producer of gold is world south Africa. According to the jewelry stores in California in the U.S., Gold is mainly mined in California.

Properties: Gold is found in its purest form of 24 carats. But pure gold can not be used for making jewelry as it is a very soft metal. Base metals like copper are alloyed with gold to give it strength. For ages, gold has been used as a vehicle for monetary exchange. And to this day, the wealth of a country is indicated by the amount of gold in its reserves.

Silver: Silver is mined in South America, Norway, and Australia. In the U.S., it is mined primarily from the state of Colorado. These are found in nature in their native form (pure silver). It can be polished easily to give it a shiny texture.

Properties: Silver is a white transition metal in color, lustrous and soft. The element has the highest thermal conductivity among metals and the highest electrical conductivity. Silver is ductile and malleable, and inert to atmospheric oxygen. However, these metal reacts with ozone and hydrogen peroxide and dissolve in nitric acid.

Platinum: Platinum is a very rarer metal, which is one of the reasons it is considered so precious. A major part of the platinum is mined in South Africa and the U.S.; this rare metal is mined in Columbia. It is mainly found on the banks of rivers.

Properties: It is a noble metal that belongs to group 10 of the periodic table. It is gray-white, malleable, ductile, and is termed a heavy metal because of its high density. Platinum has six isotopes that differ in physical properties but have the same chemical properties. This is non-reactive and highly resistant to corrosion. Platinum is insoluble in all acids but dissolves in aqua regia.

Palladium: This metal was first discovered by William Hyde Wollaston, who named it after the asteroid named Pallas. Russia is the biggest source of palladium globally. It is also found in Canada and the U.S.

Properties: This metal is the rarest of the platinum group elements and belongs to group 10 of the periodic table. Ancient, massive asteroid impact could explain Martian geological mysteries

The origin and nature of Mars is mysterious. It has geologically distinct hemispheres, with smooth lowlands in the north and cratered, high-elevation terrain in the south. The red planet also has two small oddly-shaped oblong moons and a composition that sets it apart from that of the Earth.

New research by University of Colorado Boulder professor Stephen Mojzsis outlines a likely cause for these mysterious features of Mars: a colossal impact with a large asteroid early in the planet's history. This asteroid -- about the size of Ceres, one of the largest asteroids in the Solar System -- smashed into Mars, ripped off a chunk of the northern hemisphere and left behind a legacy of metallic elements in the planet's interior. The crash also created a ring of rocky debris around Mars that may have later clumped together to form its moons, Phobos and Deimos.

The study appeared online in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, a publication of the American Geophysical Union, in June.

"We showed in this paper -- that from dynamics and from geochemistry -- that we could explain these three unique features of Mars," said Mojzsis, a professor in CU Boulder's Department of Geological Sciences. "This solution is elegant, in the sense that it solves three interesting and outstanding problems about how Mars came to be."

Astronomers have long wondered about these features. Over 30 years ago, scientists proposed a large asteroid impact to explain the disparate elevations of Mars' northern and southern hemispheres; the theory became known as the "single impact hypothesis." Other scientists have suggested that erosion, plate tectonics or ancient oceans could have sculpted the distinct landscapes. Support for the single impact hypothesis has grown in recent years, supported by computer simulations of giant impacts.

Mojzsis thought that by studying Mars' metallic element inventory, he might be able to better understand its mysteries. He teamed up with Ramon Brasser, an astronomer at the Earth-Life Science Institute at the Tokyo Institute of Technology in Japan, to dig in.

The team studied samples from Martian meteorites and realized that an overabundance of rare metals -- such as platinum, osmium and iridium -- in the planet's mantle required an explanation. Such elements are normally captured in the metallic cores of rocky worlds, and their existence hinted that Mars had been pelted by asteroids throughout its early history. By modeling how a large object such as an asteroid would have left behind such elements, Mojzsis and Brasser explored the likelihood that a colossal impact could account for this metal inventory.

The two scientists first estimated the amount of these elements from Martian meteorites, and deduced that the metals account for about 0.8 percent of Mars' mass. Then, they used impact simulations with different-sized asteroids striking Mars to see which size asteroid accumulated the metals at the rate they expected in the early solar system.

Based on their analysis, Mars' metals are best explained by a massive meteorite collision about 4.43 billion years ago, followed by a long history of smaller impacts. In their computer simulations, an impact by an asteroid at least 1,200 kilometers (745 miles) across was needed to deposit enough of the elements. An impact of this size also could have wildly changed the crust of Mars, creating its distinctive hemispheres.

In fact, Mojzsis said, the crust of the northern hemisphere appears to be somewhat younger than the ancient southern highlands, which would agree with their findings.

"The surprising part is how well it fit into our understanding of the dynamics of planet formation," said Mojzsis, referring to the theoretical impact. "Such a large impact event elegantly fits in to what we understand from that formative time."

Such an impact would also be expected to have generated a ring of material around Mars that later coalesced into Phobos and Deimos; this explains in part why those moons are made of a mix of native and non-Martian material.

In the future, Mojzsis will use CU Boulder's collection of Martian meteorites to further understand Mars' mineralogy and what it can tell us about a possible asteroid impact. Such an impact should have initially created patchy clumps of asteroid material and native Martian rock. Over time, the two material reservoirs became mixed. By looking at meteorites of different ages, Mojzsis can see if there's further evidence for this mixing pattern and, therefore, potentially provide further support for a primordial collision.

"Good theories make predictions," said Mojzsis, referring to how the impact theory may predict how Mars' makeup. By studying meteorites from Mars and linking them with planet-formation models, he hopes to better our understanding of how massive, ancient asteroids radically changed the red planet in its earliest days.

Osmium Tetroxide as a probe of #RNA Structure [Report]

Structured RNAs have a central role in cellular function. The capability of structured RNAs to adopt fixed architectural structures or undergo dynamic conformational changes contributes to their diverse role in the regulation of gene expression. Although numerous biophysical and biochemical tools have been developed to study structured RNAs, there is a continuing need for the development of new methods for the investigation of RNA structures, especially methods that allow RNA structure to be studied in solution close to its native cellular conditions. Here we use osmium tetroxide (OsO4) as a chemical probe of RNA structure. In this method we have used fluorescence based sequencing technologies to detect OsO4 modified RNA. We characterized the requirements for OsO4 modification of RNA by investigating three known structured RNAs; the M-box and Glycine riboswitch RNAs and tRNAasp. Our results show that OsO4 predominantly modifies RNA at uracils that are conformationally exposed on the surface of the RNA. We also show that changes in OsO4 reactivity at flexible positions in the RNA correlate with ligand driven conformational changes in the RNA structure.
