I feel like people fundamentally misunderstand a very funny truth about Jumin and Zen's relationship, especially in fics.
Jumin does not and never did dislike Zen, that was completely one sided on Zen's part 😂😂
Sure Jumin does come off as cold and a bit dense when it comes to Zen's issues, but I think we all have that kind of friend yk? Zen himself admits that he projected his hate onto Jumin from his hate of his brother, and he overcomes his dislike of Jumin because Jumin is NOT like his brother!
Though Jumin does value money, he never once tells Zen to choose another career path- the only one who does, or rather is given the option to, is you! The player! Jumin, though not able to understand the concept of an allergy, offers Zen genuine and sincere help in getting his acting and looks more recognized in the public sphere, and he worries for Zen even while Zen is still hostile towards him. His love and his advice is not superficial and easily swayed like Zen's brother's was, but it is genuine. Jumin is genuine. Once he realizes that Echo Girl's lies were devastating because they greatly endangered Zen's DREAM of being a successful actor, his indifference immediately turned to worry and he tried to help. He didn't tell Zen to get a better job or just take it, he helped. Jumin cares about Zen's happiness, in his own way, and it's obvious.
Anyway, they're soulmates, your honor.
(Do not even get me started on how Zen's great and open dislike for Jumin contributes to Jumin's love of him because when Zen begins to be a bit amiable towards him, Jumin is 100% sure it isn't for his money and status.)

V and Jumin's Emotionally Distant Friendship
At first I wanted to laugh at Jumin roasting his friend for being pretty outside but empty inside but then what V said got me thinking
Tumblr media
2 important statements here: 1) V believes that a friendship is a mirror that reflects oneself and 2) Jumin sees V as an empty statue, beautiful but hollow inside, something that people could only fleetingly appreciate before moving on to a more interesting thing because it has no depth. V agrees with Jumin, and even if we don't know whether Jumin believes in V's mirror analogy, it is true for them.
V and Jumin are lonely because the ones they love and claim to love them back never bother to know them deeply. They have the same insecurity, but their coping mechanism is different. V uses Rika to define himself as the man who could love grandly and withstand any trials and tribulations in the name of love. Jumin closes himself from everyone and projects his unhealthy definition of love onto his cat, building up the fantasy that it could understand him like a human would.
But once the illusion is shattered—that neither of them could give a perfect love because perfection doesn't exist—they break inside. V spirals into existential crisis while Jumin refuses to take back his cat that ran away from him. They share a common belief that their love has to be perfect. They have to be the best or they would be a failure. This is what Jumin says after he finally agreed to take back Elizabeth the 3rd due to V's persuasion:
Tumblr media
But because V and Jumin are living in their own fantasies, how could they be there for each other? How could they look into each other's emptiness and recognise how lonely the other really is, and offer emotional support when they've never learned how to do so?
The emotional closeness doesn't exist in their friendship because they can't cross the bridge. They have a shared history and deep trust, but when there's a pressing matter in the present, they don't quite know how to strengthen each other, and what is a best friend if you can't be there for them when they need it the most?
Below is one of the examples where V thinks Jumin only ever keeps one thing from him when Jumin's biggest secret is actually his feelings for Rika that he had to hide to honour his best friend's relationship:
Tumblr media
It's sad for everyone involved. V is blissfully ignorant and thankful that Jumin still trusts him despite his self-isolating secrets, while Jumin can't even show that he's also just as lonely. They can't lean on each other when they need to.
Sure, Jumin could get the best doctors for V due to his connections and V could persuade Jumin keep Elizabeth the 3rd because he knows him best. They were helpful on a surface level but the emotional job falls solely on the MC, which could be romantic if you look at it in a "wow there's only one person who could change them" way, but isn't it heartbreaking to have a friend so close to you yet feel so far away? Romantic love is important, but platonic friendship is just as meaningful. The trust and deep understanding of each other's nature are already there, so what they need to do is simply nurture their friendship and go to therapy.
On a more positive note, Jumin and V see their counterpart as the better person. V may believe that a friendship cannot change him since it's only a mirror, but if he sees Jumin as inherently better, doesn't that reflect his opinion on himself? They believe in themselves and feel their decisions validated because they trust each other. Jumin only decides to keep Elizabeth the 3rd because he values V's opinion highly, which in turn makes him better in accepting himself. V is always thankful for Jumin's unwavering trust, which pushes him to be a better person because he wants to be more like him.
Their selflessness is also a mirror. Who else but V and Jumin who would drop everything for the safety of the RFA? V would literally give up his life and Jumin would give up his C&R position and take the fall for the RFA.
I hope after their respective good endings, they'll learn to be vulnerable and open up. Their friendship will be more fulfilling and their trust will be strengthened because of it.

i have an odd question but like…what does C&R even do? what do they sell? like do the rfa members go into like a grocery store and realize it’s named “C&R groceries” ??
no this is a totally valid question! C&R is a corporate conglomerate, like Warner Bros, or Johnson & Johnson. basically it's a company that own's other companies that make/do things. (for reference: FMCG stand for Fast Moving Consumer Goods)
Tumblr media
this is the fundamental structure, but here are some real life examples:
Tumblr media
groceries is actually a funny thing to mention because iirc Zen tries to accuse Jumin's company of hurting local grocery stores by driving sales away from them, but imports like groceries isn't actually something C&R specializes in! (for reference: SME stands for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
so, knowing all this, we can guess that C&R own's brands that specialize in export, and through a quick google search it looks like South Korea's top exports are electronics, machinery, and vehicles. we also know from Jumin's own mentions that they have other projects like fashion, wine, and.....cat accessories....
so, would an RFA member walk into The C&R Store? no, but would, say, and RFA member eat a snack brand that's owned by C&R? wear a coat that that's parent company is C&R? get to work in a car or bus was manufactured by a company that is also owned by C&R? probably. my understanding is C&R is as large as Hyundai or Samsung, but has specializes in more than just cars or electronics, and so has more products they can claim sales off of.
we don't actually get much information on C&R aside from what it is and what some of their products are, but this seems to be the gist of it. if Cheritz does give us any more info on C&R in The Ssum, i dearly hopes it's what the heck the C and R even stand for, Cats & Rants? lol it's clearly a play on Procter & Gamble but i wanna know!! **obligatory i did not go to college, let alone major is business, so if anyone has anything to note, please do!

Welp. I finally got this ending for myself so why not fully dive into my Yoosung Has a Psychotic Break in the Day 5 Common Bad End analysis.
First up I noticed two things that I believe are sort of a basis for the delusion (other than Zen's dream of course), especially in the second image. I believe Rika might have once said this during an episode and Yoosung is now clinging to it as a symptom of his delusion. It also appears that Rika had mentioned "paradise" to him in passing, not fully explaining what she meant, of course, but just enough for it to linger in the back of his mind.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next, we have the delusion itself. [Click to view full images.] Yoosung is convinced that Seven has implanted a chip within the brains of every RFA member except V. His distrust towards V resulting from all his secrets also leads him to latch to him as a sort of "villain" for his delusion. This may also be a way for his brain to try and rationalize Rika's death. Seven is also dragged into this for similar reasons, on top of the fact that he is the RFA's machine expert.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mental breaks like this usually occur due to some stressful event or merely increased levels of stress, which is why most disorders of this nature tend to break through during college. Yoosung, on top of being a struggling college student, is still stressed from his lack of closure for the death in his family, as well as having a new person join the organization set to host the first party in a while in only a little over a week. I also think the part about the brainchip makes this go from possibly being a quirky meta commentary to a chilling character moment.
This was probably a bout of (take this with a grain of salt we I couldn't get enough info from these short convos) Brief Psychotic Disorder rather than the development of a fully fledged psychotic disorder. If Mint Eye hadn't taken him away, he likely would have been fine within a couple days with proper help. Then again, this all takes place over a couple of hours, so there's not enough data to make a concrete conclusion. That's just my speculation.
This one just scared me.
Tumblr media
Like I got chills. This ending fucks me up, man.
Fuck having a character love you in every route. Yoosung needs fucking therapy in every route. They all do. Holy shit.

Ahh do you think Saeyoung would ever scold mc after his good end? Does he ever get mad at mc at all?(except for when he's extremely frustrated with and just isn't himself)
Do you think he would scold me if I wasn't taking care of myself like not eating for long periods of time, being too absorbed in studies and cooping up myself in my room, brushing off any of his convincing to take care of myself (basically if I acted like how he does when he's stressed about something) Or would he just give me space. I'm saying major signs of stress
Honestly I don't think Saeyoung would ever be super hard on you, but yes, he would scold you.
Most of the time, he'd take a more humorous approach. He doesn't like to be too strict, especially considering the trauma he carries from his childhood and his time in the agency, so he will never yell or anything in that direction. It takes a lot to get him to that point, especially as a loved one. If he really ended up reacting this intensely, he'd isolate himself out of shame and selfhatred.
Depending on your personality, he'd give you some space at first, maybe trying to push you in the right direction by jokingly scolding you or asking him to join him when he's eating or relaxing.
If all of this doesn't work, he'll eventually confront you directly, but not in a harsh way. He'll tell you how he feels when he sees you like this, and that he wants you to take care of yourself. He might even remind you of how he used to act like this, and how you didn't like it, to maybe help you understand what is happening.
He'd try his best to pull you away from what you're doing. If he himself can't help you enough, he'll probably call your friends either for advice or to ask them if they can try to get through to you.
Either way, if it's going on for too long and nothing helps, he will semi forcefully remove you from what you're doing. He might speak more seriously to you during that, making sure that he's not in the mood for joking or excuses. He's also prepared to argue with you if he has too, but he will hate it very much. Still, it's very unlikely he will raise his voice at you. He might try to give you the cold shoulder if he can't get through to you at all and feels like he is going to lose control of his temper, but it will only take a few hours at most before he's coming back to you with a warm drink and a peace offering.
If you let him, he'll try his best to help you work through whatever has you so stressed and maybe set up a schedule with you that allows you to work on whatever you're doing but also includes regular breaks he will make sure you don't skip.

Lav's All-smiles Problem-solving Roooooundtable ch108 edition!
Tumblr media
Welcome, welcome! To Lav's BSD ch108 discussion! Delivered to you via my funky dove Eliott, acting as my mystic messenger. These are random thoughts I had after reading this brilliant chapter, which, writing-wise, made the best possible use of Fedya's character, expanding it even more without even betraying his backstory. Maybe a backstory isn't needed after all, just look at how much FUN he is right now. I am in BLISS
Putting aside the fact that he is literally carrying the plot at this point, come sit with me, I make you a delicious Chinese black tea with rose petals and casually share my thoughts. Hello there, dearest Kat, yes, "where is Lav when you need her?", I am here, I offer you a hug, and to all my friends here who share the sentiment, I hug you too.
A. Before you say ANYTHING about "oh but? maybe Fedya is telling the half-truth? or a half-lie? what if his ability really is the evil one?", my brothers and sisters in Christ, listen to yourself. This man functions almost on a meta-level of character consciousness: he changed his facial expression and aura so convincingly, his tone, his speech, his posture, even the shade of his eyes, fooling not only Sigma, but the readers as well. We are used to characters changing the shade of their eyes when they change mental states or have certain (new) decisions in mind, we as a community are so used to this, all it took was one panel from the Conjurer doing this trick for so many of us to actually believe him and start, yet again, to spiral down the "what if he is good but his ability is evil? what if he is two entities? what if?" rollercoaster. This is so amusing to me, and in a meta-sense must be amusing to Fedya too. While speculation can bloom again based on this, I wouldn't be putting too much effort into reading into his lines here. I take it as a trick. It worked splendidly, almost like it attacked the fandom's major concerns and theories about his character and weaponized them against everyone. That's a meta-kind of tomfoolery. Trolling, if you will. I LOVE that Asagiri made him bamboozle every reader like this. His character so far goes into the best direction, it cultivates and expands his traits and skills in the best way. But let's pretend Fedya really is telling a half-truth there, which is there being an opposition between him and his ability. I talked about this in my essay (see pinned post), there really seems to be a divergence at the core of his character, but it manifests subtly, not like what we saw in ch108. Then again, not even on that can we arrive at any conclusive statements, because if we remember that, of course, "crime and punishment are close friends", it could well be that he and his ability are partners, and you bet I imagine they would BOTH indulge in peak tomfoolery like this together, if that meant one of them switching in and the other out for a sec. Remember, dear souls: aside from his "higher mission", abstract as it still is lore-wise, Fedya's keyword is "fun" or "entertainment", repeatedly. And oh he himself is even more fun now~
B. if Fedya would have wanted to mortally wound Sigma, he'd have chosen a more suitable place to stab him; it looks like a abdominal, lower quadrant, lateral stab, a deliberate choice, I would say, that technically avoids critical, most vascular organs (kidney and spleen for example) and main veins/arteries. I am no doctor, but from what I gathered, Sigma won't bleed out fast at all, and if untreated might get a deadly infection in a longer time (not counting the possibility of septic shock if we assume the knife penetrated and heavily opened an intestine). Sigma needs a medic asap (our queen Yosano when?), but will likely be conscious and quite able to move around and whatnot. Like I argued in my essay, Fedya most likely does not want to kill Sigma, or anybody for that matter, because keeping everyone alive to fulfill various roles and see how their will tosses them in all kinds of directions is more fun for him, more entertaining, but also more useful. He is a long-term strategist, like Dazai. "Our beloved monsters" ❤
C. Fedya evidently exerts some serious mental torment on Sigma, by making him stand by his choices, his will, just like he always desired. The flip side is that Fedya takes his time, or should I say gifts Sigma his time, in which he teaches him the full lesson of what Sigma wants. The responsibility that comes with acting on your own, the terror of facing the consequences when choosing on your own: right now, to Sigma, this freedom is terror. But Fedya is never a one-dimensional character. It's most probable he calculated and devised strategies for both possibilities (a. Sigma with rekindled determination touches him; b. Sigma backpedals on what he decided and does not touch him). The irony is that both scenarios are an affirmation of Sigma's will, because, while the first decision can be seen like foolish bravery, the second one can also be seen as wise self-preservation, if the circumstances so demand it. BSD is not a black-and-white series, diving head-first into danger is not its definition of bravery or heroism. BSD was always about measured decisions, ones the characters take upon themselves willingly. It may be time Sigma does that too, in his own way, and Fedya wants to see that. Why? Well, my guess is because it's fascinating to watch humans grow, and Fedya lives for the entertainment that comes with it. It is actually more interesting if we remember his line from ch42 (“People can be so simple… They truly believe they are thinking for themselves. (…) They don’t want to think they’re being led by the nose”): the pattern is, Fedya puts others under harsh circumstances, and then, under pressure, lets go of them, waiting for their free decision, the true test and expression of their hearts, so to say (which could make a superb discussion if we make a parallel between Kunikida and Sigma, since essentially what happened to Kunikida is happening now to Sigma, except Kunikida did indeed break down, but thanks to healthy support from his comrades he slowly regained his sense of self, and stronger than ever at that time, however… Sigma is alone, isn't he? but what if he needs to be in order to finally get a hold of his own self?). Anyway, how much of that expression is free, or how much is guided or manipulated, is a debate in itself, since it implies relating the freedom to the individual vs relating the freedom to the external factors and possibilites.
D. I do need to underline, just like Fedya also underlined it: Sigma already made his decision, right there when he still tried to get the gun before getting kicked in the face. Fedya moved on to the next step: testing how strong Sigma's will is when an actual chance to act appears. Sigma already accepted the physical pain, but how will he face the mental anguish? That is more Fedya's territory, a "specialist" of breaking people by simply knowing them thoroughly and choosing the right words. But now we gained new info: even in close combat, apparently, Fedya is not to be underestimated. That was a rather strong kick, anyway. But more importantly, he completely turned the tables in a situation where he would be in a total disadvantage. * chef's kiss * that was very bungou stray dogs of him.

i'd like to know more about what you mentioned in the tags then, about taking inspiration from outside media! i remember when i first played the demo it hit just right cause i'd just watched the boys and i was hungry for more hero cynicism lol
Aw hell yeah!!
Okay so actually - I take very little inspiration from modern hero media, if any. I did grow up watching Justice League (2001-2004), Static Shock, and Batman the Animated Series and take some tonal inspiration from my memories of them (in which heroes generally try their best and it isn't always enough, villains tend to have sympathetic motives, also Mr Freeze is there and he's my big favorite), but that's about it.
When I started taking an interest in game design, I took deep inspiration from games with stories and mechanics that really resonated with me:
Mystic Messenger: I took heavy inspiration from how the love interests talk to each other, and how they all participate in every route. And the banter!! This game genuinely made me feel a personal connection to all its characters, and a lot of the player's dialogue choices were pretty damn funny for an otome game. (I have since learned that many, many indie otome games are similarly charming and I wrote a whole big list of recommendations, but didn't know they existed back in 2016-or-so.)
Undertale: Its sense of humor and meta commentary blew my mind. You could just do so much and have the game remember and react to your actions/choices, such as taking too much candy and making the whole bowl spill to the floor, or having the Mad Dummy rant about how you treated the dummy from the beginning of the game. Undertale is probably responsible for my deep interest in variable-tracking, and having characters respond to different things. (Dammit, Undertale, it's been so much work... but it's worth it I guess.....)
Disco Elysium: I played this a short while after MM and UT, and it just solidified my idea of what "my favorite game" would look like. Because I'm trying to make Herotome into my favorite game, that's my secret cap, etc etc. Anyway... Disco Elysium is fucking crazy. It's full of heart and camaraderie and also you can loudly beg for money and punch a literal child in the face and sing karaoke really badly and joking that if you find three racists you will be granted three wishes like??? It's unhinged. I haven't even mentioned the stellar atmosphere, plot, and how you have a bunch of voices in your head suggesting various courses of action and how you play as a recovering addict and you can go right back into your addiction with smoking alcohol and drugs... Describing it like this, it feels like an impossible game, that there's no way a game like this exists, but goddamn it do. And I take inspiration from a small.. SMALL aspect of it, because if I tried to fully emulate Disco Elysium I would probably die. It's just so much. And it's beautiful. Anyway DE inspired me to be more unhinged.
Dragon Age Origins: I'm listing this last because I actually played it well, well before I started game development, but it was such an impactful game for me that I'd never forgotten its scenes, characters, and how it made me feel. The CHARACTER BANTER... The sheer wealth of choices, and the emotions involved!!! There was such a general sense of world building and gravitas and then you find this mystical holy urn that's been important to a major religion and one of the characters quips "Nice vase. I should get one for my house." like??? Gah. I guess it inspired me not to take my own game too seriously, but the characters are also very, veryvery charming while also being quite diverse - everyone has a unique sense of humor and a unique background. The player can ALSO have a unique sense of humor and a unique background, which is super cool. I am absolutely not doing separate Origins for Herotome because that's way too much work-- but the diversity of the love interests did inspire me a great deal. Oh-- and the APPROVAL SYSTEM. I loved how you could get characters in the negative and have really, really interesting dialogue from antagonistic interactions, so DA:O really taught me early on that I didn't have to shy away from such things.
Perhaps most importantly: I like these games a whole lot, they are probably my favorite games. I want to like Herotome in the same way, or at least a very similar way.
A quote I try to think about a lot is "I'm surprised at the success of the show, I'm... I'm not surprised by people liking it that watch it, because... even though that makes me sound like a dick, like, that [sounds like] I knew people would like it, that's not quite what I mean-- I just mean, when you write something, you have to... if it's gonna be good, you have to be, like, its first fan, you have to be like... I don't care if I'm the only person who ever watches this, I love this. So when a second person says 'this is awesome!' You're like, stoked, but you're not shocked[...]"
... Okay I don't think about that entire stuttering quote (it's from Dan Harmon, regardless of how one might feel about him as a person he is an undeniably successful writer); but I do try to internalize "I don't care if I'm the only person who likes this" as often as I can.
I also make an effort to trust in the universe and that Herotome will reach "its people" and resonate with them in the same way my favorite games resonated with me...
... Anyway.
Outside of game design, I also try to pick out enjoyable aspects from everything I watch and read. If a book has a particularly well-written scene, I'll jot down some notes about why I liked it even if I didn't enjoy the book overall. Same with VNs and other games. While watching movies/shows I'll try to remember how they make me feel, and remember scenes that are particularly powerful and why they affected me. Yeah it's a lot of English homework, but it's how I work and indirectly feed Herotome and keep it alive in my day-to-day. I even have a playlist of random youtube videos I might reference while working on the game. Oh, and video essays -- I watch video essays religiously and make mental notes... let's plays, too, are a great way to experience how a game is designed and saving some time--
Uh, point being, you don't have to go hardcore categorizing and note-taking like I do. I just truly believe that every piece of media has something to share that can be molded and used to your own devices... even if it's "what not to do," in situations where I really, really don't like something. I'll just make a mental note to do the opposite thing. (eg, when Mystic Messenger let you choose your PFP and then randomly showed you the default MC kissing the love interest - so much whiplash, so awful, still one of my favorite games but whyyyyyy)
I actually did a meme about characters-who-inspired-my-characters a while back too, so there's that... same logic. Many many games and stories and characters inspired me, very few of them directly concern superheroes.
Thank you for the ask!!!

Okok I don't mean this as hate I'm just curious what demoncest game is Canon in the games (minus asmo's flirting/comments he makes to the bros!!) (Again I don't mean this as hate I guess I just never picked up on it +super behind in both games) (sorry for the long ask-/g
you're good, but i do want to point something out in your ask because i've seen it other places too – asmo's behavior is definitely incestuous lol. he's a member of the family flirting with other members of the family, and this is largely just seen as a cute-if-slightly-annoying quirk of his (which i add for the asmo-hating "the brothers hate it and think it's gross when he does that!!" crowd). anyway, just off the top of my head:
asmo is archetypically written as a brocon for lucifer. the main point of the "jewel of the heavens" story was to establish this, especially when simeon later accidentally lightly roasts asmo for making it his entire personality. like, the point of it is asmo is obsessed with being beautiful because that's how he can see himself as being useful to lucifer, to earn more of his love and attention.
lucifer's "punishments" for mammon are heavily implied to be sexual. during the retreat, when diavolo helps lucifer punish him literally all night long, mc and levi are (semi) joking about what the three of them must have been doing, and it's so graphic that simeon covers luke's ears.
also, can't forget mc is canonically the brothers' great-niece or -nephew. i know they tried to do some retcon on that one but come on now.
this one's kind of a meta thing but i feel like it counts so i'm adding it. one of the primary artists for cards of the twins is a career yaoi artist
but also just the twins in general. like. you are absolutely supposed to read them as shoujo twincest twins. i feel stupid even trying to argue this one because it's so obvious. if you tell belphie in season one that you have feelings for beel your intimacy with BELPHIE goes up. belphie describes his ideal life after running away as "belphie, beel and mc live happily ever after." they share a room. they have telepathy. i mean please.
satan and lucifer have this very fucked mutualistic oedipal thing going on. it doesn't come up often but it is weird as shit every time and i love it. every time lucifer reminds satan that he is technically his mother he says it in the same teasing/smug way he usually uses to flirt, and satan responds with embarrassment/blushing. "in your case, even more?" "why don't you just say 'lucifer, i need affection?'" etc
in one of the early early events i think p&c but i don't remember we get the iconic knowledge that leviathan finds humiliation "titillating!" which was in response to belphie insulting him that is what turned him on
belphie and satan's hatred of diavolo and psychosexual obsession with lucifer that are very much connected because talking about how much lucifer sucks and they hate him INCREDIBLY quickly devolved into "he's so obsessed with diavolo. i hate how he's with diavolo all the time. they're probably having sex. lucifer probably lets diavolo do anything he wants to him" like are you guys ok
belphie constantly talks about how beautiful asmo is with zero hint of irony like will just out of hand be like "my older brother who's stunningly gorgeous" as if that's a normal thing to say
everybody talks about lilith super normal you guys. especially belphie. whose very normal reaction to lilith having a human boyfriend who did not do anything wrong except die was to reverse course on his defining characteristic and develop a genocidal hatred of humans. also him holding mc and calling them lilith. it's giving yoosung mystic messenger saying you're just like rika but ok
in conclusion, very regular family

Zen & Rika are Trapped in The MM World Part 2
Now that I established all of the 4th wall breaks and references to previous Cheritz games, we can now get into Zen, Rika and the April Fool’s DLC in more detail, and how all of this ties together.
Let’s start by discussing these references. I think they are also diegetic, like the 4th wall breaks. If MM is a pocket universe created by Saeyoung and V, then of course they would know about the events of Dandelion and Nameless. Why? Because those events inspired them to create the MM pocket universe. They saw The Wizard host these games and meddle in the lives of mortals. He not only accumulates a lot of power by hosting these games but also ends up with Heejung in the end. I talked about how I think V wants to be with Rika, paralleling The Wizard and Heejung’s situation.
What Saeyoung gets out of this is 2 things:
1. Creating a ‘videogame/pocket universe’ because he enjoys it.
2. Get more memories to fuel his power by getting the MC/player to play through the routes.
I can imagine Saeyoung throwing in references to Dandelion and Nameless as a homage to his inspiration for creating this pocket universe, just like how game developers irl reference their own inspirations/previous works. This is really meta, I know. It’s amazing.
The laws of how this pocket universe seems to work are like a videogame. People are machines/AI/robots. They have to follow a set algorithm/script. The only way we can interact with the characters is through the messenger and VN scenes that only show certain locations.
This is how I interpret all of the weirdness in Mystic Messenger, while also connecting it to information we have about wizards.
Rika is Trapped:
I discussed in a follow-up to my Saeran/Ray Another Story post that Rika may actually be trapped in the MM pocket universe too, along with Zen. Though in her case, she finds out this truth and seems to want to get it out. I suggested that this is part of why she created Mint Eye, to get away from V and find a way out of the pocket universe.
1. Rika was the one who told Yoosung that everyone in the RFA are machines in the CS common route bad ending. I talked way more about this in the Saeran/Ray follow-up post.
Tumblr media
2. Let’s elaborate on Jumin’s story:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This friend that Jumin is talking about is Rika. For her to want Jumin to read this book, that coincidentally is about the origins of Nameless... I have a feeling that she knows this book’s contents are based on actual events, and that she wants to tell Jumin the truth of their universe, but had to start small.
On that note, Jaehee, Yoosung, and Jumin all seem to understand on some level that their world is fabricated. This is extremely evident in the April Fool’s DLC.
Zen is Trapped:
Here we go. This one is gonna have way too many screenshots:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I can not understate how bonkers this DLC is when it comes to the deeper lore of this game. It took the bad endings, 4th wall breaks, and references, and blows it all out of the water. It feels like all of it has led up to this: a scenario in which Zen realizes he is living in a pocket universe. This crack started in the CS common route bad ending, but we don’t actually see him believe Yoosung.
In this DLC it is Zen’s birthday, and he found himself unable to leave the RFA chat and remains logged in the entire day. I believe that this is because the messenger is the main way characters can communicate in this pocket universe, and if characters are not on screen then they... might be in stasis? Or something similar? In any case, keeping Zen in the chat like this forces him to exist and remain present the entire time.
In the screenshots above, Jaehee clearly understands something that Zen doesn’t. She gives him hints on how to ‘become like them’. In this DLC everyone is an inanimate object: 707 is cardboard, Yoosung is an omelet, Jumin is a cat, and Jaehee is a coffee maker. She doesn’t directly spell it out for him. If Zen does what she says, and acts as bizarre as them, essentially blending into the ‘normal’ of this world, then he turns into an inanimate object too in a bad ending. Can you see the double meaning here? This is a microcosm of what living in the usual (CS, DS, AS) MM pocket universe is like. Act like everyone else. If you don’t, it can lead to suffering (see CS common route bad ending).
Let's ask. Why is this DLC so bizarre anyway? Why did the laws of the pocket universe change? Well, our answer is from dear old Saeyoung the wizard.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is what he does at the end of the DLC if you get the good ending, where Zen ‘wakes up from his dream’ and has his B-day party. We literally witness Saeyoung state that he needs to change the messenger back to normal. He talks about it in terms of doing magic as a wizard.
Anyway, let’s get back to Zen being trapped. The following screenshots is Zen realizing that he is in a pocket universe. Buckle in it's a doozy:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mentioned in the past how I think Zen is a prince from Grass. I bring up multiple possibilities for how he got to the MM universe, and I think the most likely one is that he was trapped here, whether he wanted to be here originally or not. He seems to have either been here since he was a child, or his childhood memories were fabricated by Saeyoung. In any case, this dream he had when he was younger may have potentially been him seeing the future. Because he had it when he was younger, it may be further back in the timeline from what we play through in the MM routes. So, seeing us, the real us beyond the screen is predicting the future. It predicted that Zen will find out that we are an entity in another dimension/universe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I talk about MC and the player interchangeably, and that’s not an accident. I mentioned in a past post that I believe that this time around, we the player are the MC. The avatar with the long brown hair we see in pictures throughout the game is just a vessel for us to interact with the MM pocket universe. This is why she is a blank slate with little personality outside of predetermined options. This is why the MC this time has no personality while in Dandelion and Nameless, Eri and Heejung were fully fleshed-out characters.
I talked in more detail about how we, the player, have been established as an in-universe character way back in Nameless, too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This doesn’t sound good... this sounds like a man who has fallen into despair. Zen says he has come to terms with it, but he also told us to "use me". He is trapped here, but hey, at least he has some entity in another dimension/universe that he can talk to. Even if that entity is restricted with limited dialogue options! At least a real person knows he’s there, and he asks us to come and see him any time...
Mystic Messenger’s hidden story is messed up.
It’s probably a better outcome to get the good ending in this DLC, where Zen celebrates his birthday with the RFA, his fellow prisoners (if Yoosung is to be believed about them being real people at some point). Maybe ignorance is bliss in this case?
Now let’s think about why Saeyoung or V would want Zen to be here. Maybe both Rika AND Zen made a desperate wish. Maybe Zen made this wish to either V or Saeyoung, not The Wizard from Dandelion.
Perhaps Zen wanted to get away from Grass, for reasons I mentioned in my previous posts? And they technically grant it by sending him here to the MM pocket universe. His memories of Grass may have been the price for this wish, thus why he doesn’t remember his old life as a prince.
As for Rika she probably still led a tragic life, not dissimilar to her backstory from RAS. It seems like she made this desperate wish to a wizard we have never seen before. We even SEE this happen with her in V’s after ending, where Rika is seen in a dimension eerily similar to where The Wizard and other wizards are known to reside.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The background is a sea of stars. They aren’t identical but keep in mind that Dandelion was made in 2012, and V after the story was made in like 2018. In RAS we see this location again, along with it we hear a song from Dandelion play called “Ra rochu ra no so - In a Frozen Dream”.
youtube
youtube
It’s the same song. The wizard speaking to Rika has a female voice and seems to be much gentler. I think that besides V and Saeyoung there are definitely way more wizards involved in all of this.
TL;DR: Mystic Messenger is a pocket universe created by Saeyoung and V. Their goal differs. V wants to be with Rika and Saeyoung wants memories/fun. Rika and Zen both had desperate wishes. Zen to leave Grass and Rika to realize she is the sun. Zen made his wish to either V or Saeyoung, and they grant it by sending him to the MM universe. Rika made it to an unknown wizard but is whisked away by V because he became obsessed with her. He tries to become her ‘sun’. This doesn’t work out.

Hi, I was reading your works and think you have a really good understanding of characters so I wanted to ask. Do you see any scenario in which Jumin would push MC away for her own sake? Extreme cases like if his father embezzled from the company but Jumin took the fall and had to go to prison for the maximum amount of years. Or if he lost all his wealth and couldn’t afford security anymore, but still had people after him. Would he want MC to stay with him even though he wouldn't be able to protect her/give her a "normal" life?
Your marvellous mind! This makes my brain tingle. If you see from the times he's faced with threats and his bad ends, there aren't any scenarios where he pushes his loved ones away for their protection. That's more Saeyoung. Jumin is like a dragon that hoards his precious things. The more he's threatened, the tighter his grip on his loved ones would be. His biggest fear is to lose everything he holds dear, so he builds up his security to be impenetrable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If Jumin had to take the fall for his father's embezzlement, I think he'd set up emergency funds and security for MC and hide them away from the media before he goes to prison. He has a private island where MC can stay. These plans may even have been set up way before as a precaution. He'd try to make MC's life as comfortable as he can and hope she would wait for him to come back.
If Jumin became poor and had bad guys coming after him, it's possible that he'd go to Saeyoung for help. He's not above pleading for his lover's safety and be indebted to someone when he can't hold up a fair bargain. I'm also thinking about when he tries to give Elizabeth the Third to V because he doesn't think he's a good owner, so I'm tempted to say he could push MC away if he thought she deserved better. But even then, he can only part with his cat because he knows she'd be with someone he trusts. He is still in control.
More importantly, Elizabeth is a cat who can't choose him back on an equal stance. MC can. You know how pliant Jumin is over MC's words. If MC told him they wanted to stay with him despite everything, how long do you think it'd take before Jumin's resolve broke? Maybe they could run away and start afresh where nobody knew them. It wouldn't be surprising seeing that he takes this route in his BE2 DLC. Maybe MC could protect him instead. Maybe they could work together to protect their relationship and future.
When faced with imminent danger, Jumin snaps into ultra logical mode. So if he actually pushed MC away for their safety, it wouldn't be due to pure angst. It'd be a calculated act where he had some control over.
Also, during the RAE crisis, Jumin's confidence never falters. He still believes there's something he can do to protect the RFA and he toils away endlessly for solutions. All the while losing his job and friends and half his assets. It's this that makes me think when everything goes to hell, the only person he can trust is himself and therefore MC is the safest with him.
Jumin's selflessness isn't by giving up his lover. It's by giving everything he has to protect them even at the cost of himself.

Been in a very visual novel/otome game/dating sim mood lately.
Started with Tears of Themis, got worse with this one Xiao x Lumine one on Itch.io, got even worse by some non Genshin related ones on the same site (Project Blue and Blooming Panic, eugh, I'm feeling sappy), and now I've been replaying one I got in 2015 I think
Too bad it's Amnesia:Memories.
Tumblr media
I used to love the anime cuz, eugh, the character designs were so extra and I was like 16 and deep in the anime hole. Also Shin is so pretty and he's all black and red lol. I even made several Shin themes for my browser lol. These designs are so cursed btw. Thigh high boots, everything's ripped and the whole outfits probably take like hours to put on lol. Kinda cool but dumb.
I remember not being too happy with the game, though, and it took me until now to realize why.
Back then I only got 1 out of 5 good endings. Kent my beloved, no wonder I have fond memories of only him lol.
Going in again my main thoughts were "Shin's mean", "Toma's creepy and crazy", "Ikki's gross" and "don't care about Ukyo" buuuuuut
I still think Shin's mean, but now I kinda get it. He also softened in the good ending so I'll let it slide, but his constant boundary crossing makes him a bit iffy. And, unsurprisingly, I love his voice. Tetsuya Kakihara might always sound the same but eugh I love him anyway.
Toma freaks me out, can't trust him on any route. He literally puts MC in a dog cage cuz he's too overprotective. It's resolved in the good ending, but it's crazy enough for me to not be able to get over it. He's also a freak on Shin's route. Some might be into the yandere stuff but eh, not my thing.
I wanted to quickly get through Ikki's route before going for main man Kent, but turns out I actually really liked Ikki. Kinda worried that he might end up being my fav lol, I'm a sucker for the "playboy actually falls in love" stuff lol. Positively surprised.
Can't wait for Kent next time. I think he was a silly little math nerd who blushed a lot. Iirc he makes the player actually solve math problems lol. That's the way to my heart apparently xD Oh, I like his voice too, Akira Ishida. Not one of my favs but still.
Had to stop for tonight before starting Kent's route, and I finally unlocked Ukyo's, too. He seems like the meta guy (like Seven/707 in Mystic Messenger) and he pops in on every route talking about how "you probably don't remember me but be careful" and sometimes goes a bit crazy but I'm definitely interested to see how his good ending goes. Probably gonna end with me crying and wanting to hug him to make things better lol
Might even go for some of the bad and normal endings afterwards, who knows. Gonna ruin all the good vibes immediately xD
Anyway I don't think anyone's gonna read this but hey, it's there for those who might go through the game's tag soooo suffer!

Zen refers very casually to Jumin and Jumin simply??? Does not care?? That he doesn't use honorifics??
Yoosung calls 707 Sevennie hyung... 😭 why am I crying... Seven calls Jumin Juminnie Hyung?? He refers to Jumin so affectionately but Zen is just Zen hyung...
Pls read the whole post I love it

Once the time for the great evil to appear passes, and no man has been born to the Gerudo, all take a sigh of relief. The prophecy will not come to pass this go around, they think.
But there's one Gerudo, with long red hair and a veil over her face, a thin attempt to try and hide a truth no one could see anyway
She has all the parts, and no more strong is she than the average woman of her race. She's normal. Absolutely normal. A good Gerudo girl who's mind had never been touched by the miasma of Ganon.
But one day, a young blond Hylian visits. He is strong, and earns the respect of the Gerudo soldiers easily. A sword of mystic powers strapped to his back and centuries of the trees, the sky, and courage lay in his history. It's not his time yet, this good Gerudo girl knows- but she doesn't tell anyone.
This Hylian, he leaves the city. He cannot reside in the same quarters as the women, and in a town of all women this means he must sleep outside. The boy is not bothered, he sets up camp at the city walls with indifference, and for some unknown reason, the good Gerudo girl goes out to meet him.
"I've simply brought provisions, nothing more." She tells him. The Hylian doesn't speak, he never speaks, but he smiles. The mark on her hand pulses.
The Hylian invites her to sit, and out of some sort of obligation she does. She cuts up the fruit she'd brought for the Hylian, and the Hylian gives her another smile. She feels sick, in a way. The heat of the desert night persists, and as a bead of sweat trails down her back, she becomes hyper aware of herself. The jewelry on her ankles accentuating dainty legs, the elegant bow of her straight back encircled in gold, the high ponytail of red hair cascading over her shoulder. She was a good Gerudo girl.
It's summer in the Gerudo Desert. Even at night, the heat easily clears 100 degrees. The Hylian, the Hero, he strips. Casually, as though unashamed in the presence of a good Gerudo girl. She'd been told the Hylians were more prudish than her own people, but something about this one, he was wild. The deranged holiness of the forest and the skies shone in his eyes. When he prompted her, the good Gerudo girl took off her own top. Laid bare before the Hylian, he did nothing. The Hero simply sat down once more, gazing up at the stars as he accepted the cut fruit. Slowly, carefully, breathing shallow as though a sword was to her neck, she shed the loose pants cinched with gold at her waist. The Hero only glanced over, uninterested. The mark on her hand throbbed harshly, and the mark on the Hylian's hand did the same.
But that didn't matter. She was a good Gerudo girl, and the great evil hadn't been born this time around. No sin had been bred in her mind, no power she wielded more than normal.
Right?
Right.
Trying to be as inconspicuous as possible, she copied the Hero's stance. Her own elegant posture was that of a good Gerudo girl, she'd trained it into herself since she was but a child. The warrior at her side had the lazy stance of a predator, as though he were a jaguar lounging over its prey. The Gerudo girl didn't want to be prey, but as she rearranged her legs and shifted her waist to copy the Hero, she couldn't help but feel as though she'd fallen into the Hylian's lap. The pleased smirk on his face could have been a figment of the Gerudo girl's imagination, and the sharp blue eyes roving over her body could have been a trick of the light.
The hero did nothing, though, and now both in the position of men, horrible, un-Gerudo-like Men, the Gerudo girl closed golden eyes and reached out. The hand with a mark identical to hers, except for the triangle on the opposite side filled instead, took hers.
She was an awful Gerudo girl.
The Hylian drew words in Gerudo script in the sand, and pointed them out to the very bad Gerudo girl.
Your name? he had asked.
The very bad Gerudo girl couldn't speak her name aloud. She would be an even worse Gerudo girl than than if she didn't say it at all. Perhaps this Hylian was wise, sticking to the ways of silence.
As though admitting to the greatest sin of all, the Gerudo girl who was perhaps not a girl at all, wrote in the sand one of her numerous secrets.
Ganondorf.

Honestly, Mystic Messenger deserves kudos for how unique it was. I really can't think of another dating sim with the overall vibe of MM, nothing compares. Like, the dynamics between love interests first of all isn't jam packed with cheap drama. When you read the conversations between them, you can actually believe that these people are friends and get along with each other. You can sense that they've known each other for a very long time, you sense the trust and the deep bonds more and more as you progress through the story.
Not only that, but the love interests are unique as well. Any dating sim fan can tell you all about the various tropes that our love interests embody, but I feel like MM is the only sim that actually has a unique take on them. Like yes, Jumin is the overbearing rich CEO who's into BDSM and wants to own you like he owns everything else, but going through his story you truly see a side to him that feels so gratifying to learn about in the format of MM. His conflict with his dad is unique to the core- his dad isn't abusive, not to Jumin. On the contrary, Jumin holds nothing but warm praise for his father consistently and you can tell that aside from the womanizing, they have quite a good relationship! But you see Jumin's emotions change real time, how he slowly breaks down until he can't stand it anymore. How he just needs someone to comfort and understand him in his lonely world, someone who isn't a cat or his friends that don't know how to act when Jumin's collected demeanor falls apart.
Or Zen, the classic narcissist flirt, who isn't at all. You really get to see where his narcissism comes from, how he copes with being an actor, how he learns to let down his walls and let people in all the while his sweet personality coming through.
Just. Ugh. Mystic Messenger.

My #1 post of 2022
Back at it again to talk about just how much I hate the very concept of Jason 'giving up' on the Joker to return to the batfam.
Like, I see so many people who write meta and fics that claim that the one true solution to the current conflict between Bruce and Jason is for Jason to have a come to Jesus moment about why killing is wrong and to just accept that the Joker will continue to live, doing so for the sole reason of reconciling with Bruce. To me, it just reeks.
I cannot say this enough, but their conflict is not about whether killing is moral or not!!! That is not why Jason just cannot make up with Bruce as things are! Jason was considered one of the only comic book characters to be permanently dead for a reason, his death continues to mean something even after his resurrection for a reason!! The conflict starts in that the man who was supposed to protect him failed to and Jason DIED! The conflict continues because Jason was not avenged at all! His death was meaningless! Completely, utterly, meaningless!
The whole reason Jason goes on his murderquest in Gotham is because he saw newspaper clippings of the Joker, still alive and well, escaping Arkham! He must have thought of all the times Joker escaped while he was just a little kid, how they were constantly rounding the guy up and putting him back, watching the body count that this man has personally caused go up and up and up while they were functionally powerless to stop it. Jason himself says so, directly asking Bruce why he's let the Joker fill entire graveyards with innocent lives!
Under the Red Hood is a well thought out story. It never meant to make the case for whether murder is morally justifiable or not, that was Batman's trauma filled excuse. The reality, as outlined in samiralula01's post, is that Jason's death killed Bruce. He lost his ability to be compassionate, loving, merciful, and more. His little boy was dead. Clinging onto his belief that murder is wrong was just a means to justify to himself why Jason's death would have to go unavenged, and as a direct consequence of this delusion and trauma, which is explicitly said in UTRH, most of Batman's sidekicks have left him! Oracle, Tim, Steph, Cass, everyone except Dick! He's pushed them all away because of this crippling fear of losing them like how he lost Jason, this fear that has made him a colder, less loving man. The fear that turned him from a bringer of justice and hope into a dark shadow.
Jason is right, at the end of the day. He knows the Joker cannot be rehabilitated nor contained, he knows that Bats is just making excuses for himself, and his point of view is further justified by two events: 1, the fact that Barbara was brutalized by the Joker even after Jason died, and 2, that Bludhaven and supposedly Dick was literally NUKED right before Jason went to kill the Joker and instead of running to see if his son was okay, Batman went after Jason.
Batman chose the Joker over his kids not once, not twice, not thrice, but four times.
Jason dying and the Joker living on was the first.
Barbara being tortured to the point of disability was the second.
Dick being nuked and Bats not running to save him was the third.
and Jason having his throat slit by a batarang so Bats could save Joker was the fourth.
UTRH is the story of how Batman does not actually have a solid moral ground to stand on anymore. It displays not only what a broken and defeated man Bruce is, but also implies several times, most notably through the coffin maker's story, that even Bruce believes that Jason is right. He believes that his precious second son deserved to be avenged, not even through bureaucratic or judicial means, but through death. UTRH is a story about Batman, all alone, making huge mistake after huge mistake.
Jason asks Batman to choose: him or me. The Joker or Jason. Your kids or a villain.
Batman chooses.
The Joker puts it the best, after Batman upholds his no-killing rule for the Joker by killing Jason.
"You managed to find a way to win... and everybody still loses!"
