FINALLY getting to play mysteries under lake ophelia today. so excited because i love everything bryce bucher does. ive been counting down the days until it released on switch, oddly enough its also the day when my exam week finishes (thank god) so it works well as a reward. anyway the content warnings are very interesting.

like flashing images yeah i get that, thalassophobia i expected that as this is a fishing game (i do have thalassophobia so im glad bryce recognised that phobia because a lot of people dont) but like trypophobia??? why??? whats gonna have holes in it??? like i was excited going into this game because i know bryce, theres gonna be more to it than just a fishing game, theres gonna be something scary. but like what??? is jane prentiss gonna make a surprise appearance??? no idea. but anyway please dont spoil it for me i want to be surprised lmao

5. The Corridor is a short meta game about the experience of playing games. more specifically, about the experience of walking down a corridor. what does that mean? I don't know.

6. Nuts is an eerie narrative game about.......watching squirrels?! and it doesn't disappoint, there are a large number of squirrels. the world you can walk through looks gorgeous, with stylized surreal colours.

7. Brassica - A Marry Tale is a gay dating sim with a charming art style

8. Orchids to Dusk is a short wandering game about an astronaut on an alien planet with only a few minutes left to live

9. Extreme MeatPunks Forever is a hybrid visual novel/ brawling sim, following the lives of a handful of gay mech pilots

10. Evolution is a game where you build lifeforms, and help them evolve to perform tasks

Hello I have a tumblr now. I am currently working on 3 games on a rotating schedule, and I thought I'd make my first post an overview of some of my past and current projects (pictured in the order listed below):

Fatum Betula (2020)

A game in which you wander around strange areas in search of liquids to feed to a small birch tree in order to alter reality. Like most of my stuff, it has a very heavy focus on atmosphere, and it is dear 2 my heart. As of right now its probably the game that I am most well known for.

Mysteries Under Lake Ophelia (2021)

A relaxing fishing game in which you catch fish in a strange, slightly eerie lake. It has a simple progression system and a lotta underwater type creatures. Check it out if you are into relaxing OoT type fishing vibes.

J(a)SON: The Dog Living Inside a Mistake (WIP)

An immersive sim in which you play as a goth-hacker enby. They've broken into the HQ of Synergisticorp on suspicion that their dog was stolen and is suffering as part of some horrible experiment gone wrong. This game is setup for me to be as indulgent as possible, so it's gonna have a lot of mechanics. Right now it has a hacking system where you can connect any device to any other (similar to gunpoint), objects with interactable interfaces (so like u can press individual buttons on a microwave), and a "chemistry" system (kinda similar to breath of the wild where stuff can be set on fire and electrocuted and all that). I plan to add picross, a second type of hacking, rat breeding, and a bunch of other bullshit. Keep an eye on it if you are a fan of stuff like deus ex or prey 2017.

The Winds of Basidia (WIP)

I am co-developing this game with Modus Interactive, and it's a sequel to his title The Snow of Basidia. I don't want to go into too much detail but it is gonna be a western-style rpg primarily inspired by Majora's Mask, Fallout New Vegas, Pathologic, and Nausicaa. It's got a timeloop, political factions, gliding, a basidium plague, murderable npcs, etc. I'm very excited about this one, and it's been really fun to work on.

Midwest Lost (WIP)

Midwest Lost is going to be a bossrush, exploration based souls-like in which you play as a shit head emo kid in the american midwest. You have a big ass sword, a bunch of energy drinks, and are looking to pick some fights. This game is the earliest in development out of all of these projects, but I have a lot of very exciting things planned for it.

Anyway, I'm going back and re-reading the conversation between El and Balthasar Lake after making it to the end of the book and-- (spoilers)

THE SCREAMING INVOLVED IN RE-READING THIS SCENE.

Orion's dad absolutely knows what Ophelia did to their kid. There's a reason he's fine with Orion being dead (one less maw-mouth in the world), but absolutely attached to the stories of Orion being human. And when he says "You'd better come talk to Ophelia," and there's that whole typical El rant about enclavers and their calculations? Girl, he was not doing the calculations you thought he was doing. Because he knows what Ophelia is too, and he probably knows she was looking for El or an equivalent, the fair trade for making Orion, and he's risking bringing El under Ophelia's wing right there along with saving and/or killing his own son -- EL YOU SAID RIGHT TO HIS FACE THAT YOU WERE THE ONE PERSON WHO COULD KILL ORION AND YOU DIDN'T EVEN KNOW YOU WERE SAYING IT.

...and there's a good chance he guessed the bit about the enclaves falling too. She told him "I've done it three times." Mr. Lake almost certainly is on the inside regarding the particular enclave building spell. And this is a plot point that can be solved by counting, if you know how enclaves are built. Can you imagine, knowing the answer to the mystery of Bangkok and company, knowing your enclave is halfway to war over that mystery, and you're not even going to do anything about it because your calculations also include Ophelia Rhys-Lake?

AND THEN. AND THEN, Ophelia herself! "She'd more or less turned herself into the Scholomance." Pair that with how Orion ends up, as Atlas. Two Scholomances in one family, the old and the new, and one made the other through sacrifice after sacrifice...

Jesus Christ, Naomi Novik. Just hit me in the face with it. God.

To say that Fitz had lost track of TIME would be an understatement. Did time even exist anymore? Without the sun rising and falling, it was hard to tell. All he really knew anymore was dust and blue. Dust and blue and IT. It that lived in the shadows and the sandstorms and the dark moments.

It that whispered and tried its absolute damndest to lure him out and kill him, drive him insane just like it did to the others. 

There was nothing on this hellscape of a planet left. It was just Fitz. Just Fitz...

Until he heard her.

It wasn’t uncommon for It to use voices, to try and call for him and lure him out, but most of those voices had been men, but this... this voice was new. And it was close. Just above the trapdoor near the lake...

He watched her, sometimes, hidden in the reeds, but he couldn’t be sure. Maybe It had gotten smarter and was trying something new... Either way, he had to catch It, to find out what It wanted.

So, he lured her over, tossing rocks at the reeds, the noise of it attracting her until she was standing right on top of the trapdoor. The moment she fell through, he ran, covering up the hole in trap again.

He’d made the cage ahead of time, all he had to do was tie the walls together. And judging by how heavily she -- It? -- was breathing, he had plenty of time to do that before she woke up again.

Fitz had seen her come in before. The first time, she had been with another woman, the pair of them laughing and smiling, sipping wine at their table. She looked over in his direction from time to time, but it was only ever a passing glance, just looking at the art on the walls or the chandelier above his head. Maybe once she looked at him, just to see who was playing the piano, but he wasn’t sure. Regardless, he kept his head down and focused on the keys under his fingers.

She was back again about two weeks later. Her hair had been cut shorter, and her dress was the same as the one her friend had been wearing last time. Maybe they shared wardrobes, or something. Was that weird of him to notice?

It seemed like she was there for some sort of meeting, if the other fancily dressed people were anything to judge by, and the short conversations about what... seemed like business, maybe? Still, he focused on the keys, focused on the sheet music and the tablet in front of him.

The third time he saw her, it was in the corner of his right eye. She was talking to Hunter at the bar, and the pair of them kept nodding towards him. He tried to keep his focus on the composition he was playing, but a pop-up on his tablet alerted him that Hunter and this mystery woman were indeed talking about him, as Hunter had slyly texted him under the bar without ever breaking eye contact or conversation with the woman.

HUNTER: Incoming - lady wants to talk to you

Fitz blinked at his tablet and his mouth moved a little, no words or distinguishable sounds passing his lips. And, sure enough, the woman was walking towards his piano now, lingering near the rear leg as he played. She was still far enough away from him that she wouldn’t see his wheelchair, wouldn’t really notice the way he was sitting or that his head tilt wasn’t just a matter of him focusing.

He let his eyes flicker towards her, then back to his keyboard, and he nodded his head towards the sign propped up on the lid of the piano. PLEASE WAIT UNTIL I FINISH PLAYING THIS SONG TO MAKE A REQUEST.

Fitz had been working for the SHIELD 616 for just about two years. Becoming a firefighter hadn’t been his original plan for his life, but something about the team had just felt right, so he’d made the change from volunteer to full-time, and never looked back. Sure, it was dangerous, and he’d be lying if he said he didn’t sometimes consider the what-ifs, but he liked his work, liked his team.

When one of the EMTs had left, having finished medical school and moved on to become a trauma doctor, there had been an open position. The fire captain, Coulson, and the paramedic captain, had interviewed people to fill Lincoln’s spot, though Fitz hadn’t had a chance to meet them until today.

It had been a relatively easy day, with the crew taking advantage of the gap between calls. Fitz was flat on his back on the creeper seat, only his feet sticking out from under the rig, when he heard a new voice call out a hesitant hello.

“Jus’ a second!” he called back, shifting his feet so he could push himself out from under the firetruck. He was sure that he looked a right mess, his hands greasy, his face, too. He was also sure that he’d have to change, his shirt dirty from being on the floor.

When he finally resurfaced from under the truck, he was immediately looking up at the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen. Her hair was pulled back into a tight ponytail, and she was wearing the EMT uniform. ( So she was Lincoln’s replacement, then. ) For a moment, Fitz couldn’t remember how to breathe, his mouth open slightly as he stared up at her, still flat on his back, covered in engine grease.

“... Hi.”

Games I played this year!!! Idk if this number should concern me or not lol. I'm still currently playing AC, Chained Echoes and Signalis. Some thoughts on the games I played below

This year I got much much more into playing visual novels. Especially yuri ones. I've played 2/4 of the Flowers games and so far they're such a lovely experience.

A standout for me was also Needy Streamer Overload. Its an incredible experience and I was really surprised how much I fell in love with Ame. Such an interesting love letter to the internet, the good the bad and the ugly of it all. Bless 🙏

I also tried to play much more indie games. Getting ps+ was a huge boon to that. KeyWe is an adorable coop game, Toem is super relaxing and sweet. Pupperazzi was so good, I wish there was more of it. Standout titles in this category would be Virgo versus the Zodiac which is a very charming rampage story, very reminiscent of Drakengard 3, very beautiful art and characters I easily fell in love with. Unsighted is a very fun game best enjoyed in coop with a person who's company you enjoy. Walking on a star unknown has an incredible world that still makes me think about it a lot, the characters and their relationships as well. Signalis so far is really atmospheric and very interesting world building (like the DDR being behind everything so far lol). Chained Echoes is also a very delightful jrpg romp.

Also special shout out to Mysteries under lake ophelia. It captures everything I loved about ps1 and n64 bodies of water. The fishing, the vibrant environment in all its crunchy 480p glory, the inherent creepiness to all of it. Huge recommend.

I also went super heavy on jrpgs this year. Played the Xenoblades for the first time and I'm really glad. I love the attention to the world, the characters, the overall narrative. XBC3 reminded me why party members will always be my favourite narrative part of jrpgs, and the side quests will never be matched by any other game ever. Voice of Cards also really charmed me. A very delightful, compact package. FF3 became one of my favourite FFs, probably thanks to me playing Shadowbringers first before playing 3. Alliance Alive became an official Hidden Gem. It reminds me a lot of Bravely Default with how much love got stuffed into every nook and cranny. The characters are especially charming. Tactics Ogre good and excited to get to Reborn soon.

Stinkers of this year were probably Amrilato, which I was super excited for, but utterly destroyed my enjoyment by the protagonists HUEEE, EHHH??? exclamations and the LIs very flat VA performance (no fault to her, I can't image it being easy to bring 100% emotion into a performance of which the language you probably do not understand). Anno mutationem was incomprehensible to me and ultimately not very enjoyable despite the pretty graphics.

Overall, a good year in gaming. I discovered some real gems this year, and I'm looking forward to what I'll discover in the end year :) gonna try to dig harder at lesser known games and older games, and especially indie games.
