Buck's parents slowly chipped away the love and meaning and power of his name, but Eddie gave it all back in that one "because, Evan..."

wait could the marisol thing lowkey be a win for demi!eddie though?
i know he doesn't have a deep emotional connection with her, but he does have a connection, he has spent time with her previously and knows more about her than the women pepa has been setting him up with or the women he was trying to form connections with in that weird montage
((bonus: the knowledge that he knew shannon years before they got together))

i will never forgive Ramon Diaz for breaking Eddie's pure spirit in such a delicate age. this little boy was so gentle and soft and loving and full of light. he was willing to drive his own mother to the hospital cause there was no one else around. he took care of his sisters and was so happy to cook for them. and Ramon took all that tenderness inside of him, the child inside him, and crashed it like a bug in the name of being a Man.
but then i think about Abuela and Pepa and how they gave him all the love his father never did. they compensated for the warmth and comfort he never got from him. they supported him, embraced him and encouraged his kind young soul to keep that fire inside him. to never let it burn out despite his father's efforts. they didn't let Ramon break his spirit completely. no. they protected him. they shaped him into the man he is today. all his gentleness, all his softness, all his kindness, that's on them. sure, he never got the loving father he deserved, but he did turn out to be one to Chris. and i think they're an integral part of the reason why.

The Missing Piece
A/N: Just to let you know, Steve’s scar story is a true story that happened to me when I was younger that I didn't realize was so awful until I told it someone. Halfway writing about Rosa, I realized that I was thinking of Rosa Diaz from Brooklyn 99. So, loosely based on her.
Steve doesn't like to talk about his parents much. It's not that he hates them or anything. They weren't around enough for him to have a reason to hate them. He doesn't really know them well enough. They don't hit him or anything, and they pretty much leave him alone when they are around, only talking to him to remind him not to embarrass them, which is fair. So, they're not terrible parents. Not really.
"Hey, I have to ask. How'd you get that scar on your upper lip?" Eddie asked.
Steve had invited Eddie and Robin over to hang out at his house. It was safe to say that Eddie was quickly becoming their best friend as well. Although there was this fuzzy feeling in his stomach that told Steve that Eddie might mean something more.
"I'm such a klutz," Steve said chuckling.
"It's true, he is," Robin said.
"So, you know the story," Eddie said.
"No."
"Okay, fine. Fine. When I was younger, I went grocery shopping with my mother, but the sounds and everything always overwhelmed me even now, but I like to think I'm better at handling it. Anyway, I used to scream my head off, it made shopping hard for my mother, and she quickly got tired of having to bring me to the restroom to pop me in the mouth. She finally came up with a solution to just leave me in the car while she shops. I was okay with it for a while, but I didn't like how sleepy the hot car made me, so I tried running after her. I slipped and fell on the pavement. Busted my lip pretty good. My mom ripped me a new one for not listening to her. I was a shitty kid," Steve said, smiling fondly.
There was silence as Robin and Eddie stared at him.
"What?"
"Did you know this about his mom?" Eddie asked.
"No! I would have killed her!" Robin exclaimed, horrified.
"Where was your dad in all of this?" Eddie asked.
"Away on business like always or cheating on my mom," Steve said.
"Why are you saying it so casually?!" Robin asked.
"You're his best friend, shouldn't you know these things about him?!" Eddie exclaimed.
"Excuse me, she knows plenty of things about me. Like my favorite colors are yellow, blue, and pink. She knows I like blueberries and snap peas. She knows I'm bisexual. She knows that I lost my virginity to a guy - "
"I do NOT! You're bisexual?!" Robin said.
"I told you in October!" Steve exclaimed.
"I thought you were talking about getting a new bicycle!" Robin exclaimed. "You lost your virginity to a guy?"
Steve leaned in to whisper in her ear.
"I told you about Tommy," Steve said.
"I thought you said Tammy," Robin whispered back, and then she waved her hands about. "Okay. Okay. Look, whenever Steve did talk about his parents, I always thought they were boring, stuffy, rich people, not abusive assholes!"
"They're not abusive. You have to actually be around for them to be abusive. I mean, honestly, they could be, but I don't know them very well," Steve shrugged.
"I don't think I was in this much denial when my own dad walked in and out of my life," Eddie said as he paused and placed his hands on Steve’s shoulders. "Steve, sweetheart - "
"You called me sweetheart," Steve said with a crooked smile, and he giggled softly.
"Yeah, I did do that. Focus," Eddie said. "How often did your parents leave you alone so often?"
"Oh, they decided that I didn't need a nanny anymore so. . .8! Yeah, eight. Although, I kept calling her mom up until I was about four. I cried like a baby when I found out they fired her, and a year later, when I found out she died in a car accident," Steve said, looking sad. "She taught me Spanish, you know, and she used to make me spaghetti with hot dogs. I loved it. You would have loved her, Robin. You remind me of her sometimes."
"Steve, why don't you talk about her?" Robin asked.
"It hurts too much to talk about. I do think about her. What would she think of me now? Would she be proud of me? Would she still love me?" Steve shrugged. "I wasn't even allowed to go to her funeral. I don't even know where she's buried."
"Sweetheart, what was her name?" Eddie asked softly.
"Rosa," Steve said, and tears came to his eyes. "Rosa Sanchez."
Steve pinched the bridge of his nose to stop the tears from coming. Eddie grabbed his hand and pulled it away.
"Let them come," he said softly. "No one is here to tell you not to."
Steve burst into tears and fell into Eddie's arms.
"He always told me that Harrington men don't cry!" Steve sobbed.
"Everyone cries. Your parents were abusive, uncaring, and the most awful people on the planet. Rosa was your mom, in everything but blood, Rosa was your mom, and you should be allowed to mourn for her," Eddie said.
Steve buried his face into Eddie's neck and let it all come out. Robin came up behind him and hugged him tightly. Eventually, it became hard to hold him up, so they moved him to the couch, where he fell asleep, crying into their laps. Eddie gazed lovingly at him as he stroked Steve’s hair.
"You're totally in love with my platonic soulmate, aren't you?" Robin asked.
"He makes it easy," Eddie replied.
"We have to find out where Rosa is buried," Robin said.
"And we know just the person to crack this case," Eddie said.
"Nancy," Robin and Eddie said in unison.
The next morning, Steve woke up to find Eddie snoring in his face. They were curled up on the couch, their legs intertwined. Steve could feel Eddie's hand pressed up against the small of his back. Steve's shirt had bunched up during the night, so Eddie's hand was touching his skin. The touch caused a fuzzy feeling to spread throughout his body, and it also made his head buzz. Steve bit his lip and brushed his knuckle against Eddie's cheek. It caused his body to shudder and Eddie to startle himself awake. He almost jumped right out of Steve's arms, but Steve threw his leg over his hip and pressed him back down on the couch.
"I don't think so. I'm quite comfortable," Steve grinned.
"Uh, so, how are you?" Eddie asked, his nose suddenly brushing up against Steve's.
"Good. . .better and much lighter, like there's a weight off my shoulders," Steve said. "It's all because of you and Robin. Thank you."
"Anything for you," Eddie said honestly. "I'm glad we can be of help. You should know that Robin left. She had to talk to Nancy about something."
"Anything that I should know about?" Steve asked.
"Not yet," Eddie said.
"Hmm, okay, I trust you," Steve said with a happy sigh as he nuzzled his nose against Eddie's. "Can I kiss you?"
"You want to kiss me?" Eddie asked, his eyes widening comically.
"Mm-hm," Steve said. "Very much."
"Okay."
Steve pressed his lips against Eddie's with another happy sigh. Eddie wrapped his arms around Steve's shoulders, pulling him deeper as Steve flipped him onto his back. Steve's heart was singing with how well their bodies fit together. . .how well they fit together like two perfect puzzle pieces. Steve broke the kiss and leaned his forehead against Eddie's.
"You make me so happy," Steve said.
"Ridiculous idea but I'll accept the fact that Steve Harrington says that I, Eddie Munson, makes him happy," Eddie said and paused. "You make me happy too."
The next few weeks flew by, and they were spending all their time together. It was complete bliss for the both of them and Steve was so glad that there wasn't the expectation of sex. They had both agreed that it would be better for their relationship, and it was. It wasn't hanging over their heads like they thought it would. They were just enjoying each other's company. They had already come out to the group so when Joyce and Hopper had a little get together there wasn't any pressure to hide their relationship.
"It's so nice that everyone can come together like this," Dustin said.
"Uh, you're missing someone, genius," Max said.
"Who?" Dustin said.
"Nancy isn't here," Steve replied, his arm wrapped loosely around Eddie's waist.
"Oh, shit," Dustin cursed. "Where is she?"
"She called and said she would be by later," Robin said.
"You know something," Steve said with narrowed eyes.
"It's good, I promise!" Robin said. "At least, that's what Nance said but she wouldn't say exactly what was good about it, just that it was good, and it was good for you."
"Okay, I'm trusting you guys," Steve shrugged.
Nancy didn't show up until an hour later, and Steve was now sitting on the porch with Eddie in his lap as he talked animatedly to Dustin. Steve's hands were firmly on his hips because if they weren't on his hips, Steve knew that if Eddie got too excited, he would start bouncing and he did not need that happening in the middle of the party.
"Steve," Joyce called out from inside the house.
"Be right there," Steve replied and got up before depositing Eddie back into the chair.
"Aww, my comfy chair is leaving," Eddie said and Joyce's head popped back out the door.
"You might want to come, too," Joyce said.
Eddie shared a look with Steve before taking his hand and walking into the house. Joyce was standing around the table with Hopper, El, and Nancy.
"What's going on?" Steve asked.
"Nancy told us about Rosa, your real mother. She also told us about your parents," Joyce said and hugged him. "I'm sorry but Nancy does have good news for you."
She squeezed his arm before pulling away. Steve turned and looked at Nancy with confusion.
"When Robin told me about Rosa, I had to find out where she was buried. With the help of Hopper and El, I was able to find her. When your parents fired her, she fought like hell to stay with you but finally, they threatened her by threatening you and so she left because she wanted to protect you," Nancy said, tears in her eyes. "I never found a gravestone, not even a death certificate. I didn't. . . because Rosa's still alive. . . Rosa?!"
Steve's heart stopped when the woman he had been missing every single day of his life walked into the room. . . the woman he thought had died. The last time he had seen her was when he was eight years old, and he had tried to get to her stay. He remembered the last word that he had uttered as she walked out the door, the word he had promised his parents that he would never call her. . . the word that came out now.
"Mama?!" Steve sobbed.
Rosa let out a strangled cry and rushed toward him, throwing herself into his arms. Steve put his arms around his nanny. . . no, his mother for the first time in years. He immediately began rambling in Spanish.
"Steve, Steve, slow down. You're going to make yourself sick," Rosa said as she brushed away his tears. "Oh, you've grown so much."
"Sorry, I know my Spanish is a little rusty," Steve said. "I haven't used it in a while."
"You will learn again," Rosa laughed. "My curious little boy, you've always had search thirst for knowledge. Always wanting to know the answer to everything."
"It took me forever to learn things. You know that I used to crawl backwards," Steve muttered.
"We learn in different ways," Rosa said. "You still learned and eventually you did start crawling forwards and who did you start crawling towards?"
"You, mama, always you," Steve said and she patted his cheek with a proud smile.
"I'm proud of you. I've heard you've got a big family now," Rosa said. "Introduce me."
"But first. . .," Steve said, looking at Eddie questioningly, and Eddie nodded. "I want you to meet my boyfriend, Eddie."
"Do you make him happy?" Rosa asked.
"That's what he keeps telling me," Eddie grinned. "He makes me happy, too."
"Then I am happy," Rosa said and hugged Eddie.
Steve grabbed his mother's hand and led her outside.
"Hey guys, you want to meet my mom?" Steve asked, laughing as everyone surrounded them.
Steve grinned as he told them the story, his heart filling with joy. The hole that had been left there was now gone as the most important person in his life was now found again. All the pieces had now come together.

Helllllo and welcome to my new Weekly Fic Recs!
This first one is going to be a little long since I’m going to rec my favourite fics that I’ve read so far in November. I’ll likely post a list weekly moving forward (probably Friday or Saturday) and will tag them as ‘Han’s Buddie Recs’ and 'Han's Weekly Fic Recs'

I wish I was lying when I say I’ve read this fic 4 times since it came out, but I’m not. It’s so damn good.
Hot Ghost Problems by ebjameston/@ebjameston Teen || 40.9k The ghost would prefer to go by Buck, if Eddie wouldn’t mind.
I can’t find the worlds to tell you how much I love this fucking fic. It’s so good. It might actually be perfect.
of bake sales and overdue realizations by brewrosemilk/@gayhoediaz Teen || 4.8k Eddie doesn’t notice it until it becomes a thing that happens even when it’s just him and Buck, without Chris anywhere near them - but even then, he doesn’t find it strange, or give it much thought. Buck is the one who starts ending their phone calls with a quick ‘love you’ but it doesn't take long before Eddie does the same, often beating him to it.
WIPs
Maybe More Than I Should by Leslie_Knope Mature || 30k || ¾ chapters complete Eddie caught sight of the man leaning against the side of his desk and immediately wanted to retreat to the relative safety of the hallway, back in time when he lived happily not knowing that Mr. Buckley was apparently some kind of male model masquerading as a third-grade teacher.
This fic is an absolutely TREAT

Buddie 611 meta
Tumblr media
I LOVED that the ep showed us how Eddie wasn’t doing compressions on Buck because someone instructed him to. No, he just couldn’t stand by, couldn't let someone else try to bring his partner back to life, so he announced he was taking over, fuck anyone who would try to stop him. No one even tries to, they wordlessly acknowledge Eddie as Buck's mad with worry partner, much like how in 315, the team treated Buck while Eddie was in danger. And then Eddie shocks Buck’s heart back and gets his pulse going again. Eddie literally kept Buck’s heart going, and then he was still so distraught that he yelled at the medical staff (even though as a medic, he knows it’s pointless), “Do more!” 'Coz that’s what Eddie himself was doing, he stepped in and did more than he was asked to, a continuation of us having seen him doing exactly that in 610 as well, when he didn’t wait for Bobby to decide what to do to help Buck, Eddie charged up an electrocuted ladder he was just thrown off of. Because when it comes to Buck, he will always do more. ~~
Tumblr media
The significance of the bond between them is also shown when Eddie is the first flashback Buck experiences within the coma dream, the first lifeline to the real world. That’s continued when the second flashback is to the tsunami, where Buck saved Chris. However, Eddie and Chris aren't quite present in these flashbacks. Buck’s subconscious is at war with itself. The Diaz boys are this powerful connection to the real world (much like Buck and Chris were Eddie’s back in 315, as I tried to demonstrate in this gifset), but the coma dream shows the power of childhood trauma and how much we can be trapped by the desire to fix it. The whole dream contrasts Buck having parents who are loving, who want and appreciate him, with everything bad that would happen if he weren’t with the 118. As the dream goes on, the price keeps getting higher, yet Buck still struggles until the very end with letting go of the illusion that his parents love him, and the sense he himself can be fixed if they do, like he’d then finally feel good enough. That’s why, in a sense, Eddie and Chris have to be more absent than present for the coma dream to be seductive. Because if they’re fully present, if he truly engages with their coma versions and remembers the family unit he has outside the dream, the balance would be tipped over, the battle would have been decided before Buck had a chance to learn his lesson.
Tumblr media
That’s why he only hears what happened to Eddie, he doesn’t witness it firsthand, and why when the dream's seductive nature is failing, suddenly Chris is there (despite his coma version not being in LA) to tempt Buck into staying. Even then, walking away from the dream version of Chris while telling him that he’s not real is the only thing Buck says he'll always feel guilty about. ~~
Tumblr media
I just gotta include a small note here on how much I love the progression we’ve had from Bobby saying in 101 that while Buck calls him “pops,” they’re not a family, through Buck telling TK aloud that Bobby’s basically his dad (in the crossover) to Bobby finally admitting this is true for him as well. I’ve pointed out this season repeatedly (like in my 610 meta) that the show’s dealing with questions of fatherhood, including the question of biology in that context, and this ep was no different, yet this truly was one of the highlights for me when it comes to this theme. I love how much Buck and Bobby mean to each other. ~~
Tumblr media
Buck’s mom saying “your kids” and Buck being confused until she clarifies it’s not his actual children, it’s his students, then his disappointment, that’s one loose end that the ep didn’t wrap up, because that is a continuation of the whole sperm donor situation (with Margaret once more being at the center of confusion on whether Buck is a dad or not). This one is only going to be really addressed once Buck fully deals with his role in Connor and Kameron’s baby’s life, something he can’t properly do until he also faces his role in Christopher’s, a role that this ep really emphasized. No other kids were by Buck’s bed, not even May who has free access as a legal adult and who has now admitted she knows Buck is her step dad’s other kid. Chris needs his Buck in a way that no other firefam kid does. ~~
Tumblr media
Which brings me to the heart wrenching fate we (and Buck) learn the Diaz boys have suffered in his absence. I have mentioned countless times in my meta posts how important I believe 204 was to Buddie. How critical Buck’s decision to step into Eddie’s mess with him was. Not once, but twice in that ep, first when he helps Eddie by talking to Bobby about Chris spending the day at the station with the 118, then when Buck introduces Eddie to Carla. I have always said Eddie was very attracted (and not just physically) to Buck from the start, but Eddie’s Christopher’s dad first, so he never would have been able to fall for anyone who doesn’t also love his son as much as he does. In other words, I’ve always thought the heart eyes Eddie gives Buck at the end of the Carla introduction scene, that was the moment when he was gone. And now we learn how meaningful Buck himself knows that was. Without that happening, his subconscious just knows Eddie’s parents would have succeeded with their threat of getting Chris away from his dad, leading to Eddie completely falling apart. Buddie's tale is a love story, and this coma revelation is basically the show telling us Buck’s subconscious already knows this. ~~
Tumblr media
Eddie’s reactions in the real world are also a reflection of how important Buddifer’s little family unit is to all three of them. Keep in mind, even with his therapy, Eddie is still a reserved guy, right? He normally remains calm in the face of adversity, it takes a lot to rattle him, he doesn't easily get to the point where he falls apart emotionally. When he does in this ep, he only allows himself to when his son is looking away. And even then, he just can't go on answering Christopher's questions about Buck's state. So it highlights how important Buck is to Eddie, when the latter DOES fall apart. When he jumps in to take care of Buck on the gurney as it’s wheeled into the hospital. When he shouts at the medical staff. When he looks so wrecked at the hospital, close to what previously it took weeks of insomnia to do to him. When he can’t look at Buck's comatose body or stop himself from crying while he listens to Chris speaking or bring himself to be strong for his son and answer him. And of course, when the reserved Eddie goes against hospital regulations and parental common sense (to keep your kid away from disturbing sights), sneaking his son in to see Buck. But Eddie does it because he gets it. When Chris says he needs to talk to Buck, Eddie knows the full weight of this, because it’s his truth, too. Both Diaz boys need their Buck to wake up. So everything Chris is saying, all the comfort he’s offering, along with the insistence that Buck MUST return to them? He’s speaking for Eddie as well. ~~
Tumblr media
I also liked that Buck realized during his coma dream two truths that seem, but are not, mutually exclusive: that he does have a family worth going back for, but that ultimately, he’s returning for himself. He’s not trying to please anyone else, he’s not trying to get anyone else’s approval. His adoptive family matters to him, even his bio parents who have failed him repeatedly matter, but at the end of the day, he’s not going back because his loved ones do or don’t need him, do or don’t accept him, do or don’t approve of him. He’s going back because he loves them and he wants to be with them. And that ties in with another thing we see in this ep.
Tumblr media
Bobby describes the coma dream as a world where Buck can fix everything. Buck says not all, seemingly implying he couldn’t bring Bobby back from the dead. But that’s not actually true, is it? 'Coz the coma world is Buck’s subconscious, it can be altered in whatever way he wants. Bobby can be there and talk to him despite being “dead” which means... he’s not really dead, not in the way that makes death so tragic, depriving us of our loved ones. Chris can be at the hospital, despite not being in LA and not knowing Buck. It’s a coma dream, there are no rules! Buck’s subconscious is king! And we know how important it is for Buck to fix things, Eddie pointed it out in 504, and we saw a callback to this just last week. The climax of this ep is even set against the musical backdrop of Coldplay’s Fix You. But this trait stems from Buck feeling like he needs to fix things, to be the hero, in order to be worthy of love. In the coma, Buck realizes he IS loved. And therefore, he doesn’t need to fix EVERYTHING in order to make a difference and be deserving of love. He IS enough, exactly as he is, limited fixing possibilities and all. That’s how he gets to choose both his loved ones and himself in coming back to reality. ~~
Tumblr media
Oh, can we talk about the heart drawings scene from 514 and how it relates to this ep? I recently answered an ask about it, and pointed out I think Eddie’s heart has been Chris for years now, and for a long time, it was only him. But that scene showed how, thanks to the way Buck has been there for both of them along the years, helping, healing and loving them, Eddie’s heart is no longer exclusively his son. It’s Buck, too. Which explains why the heart theme we’ve been seeing with Eddie since 413 has expanded to include Buck’s in this ep, with Eddie literally restarting it. So 611 really affirms who Eddie’s heart now belongs to. We see how, without Buck, he would have lost Chris as well. Without Buck, he would have lost his whole heart. ~~
Tumblr media
And that brings us of course to what kind of a person Eddie would be once that happened. We learn he would have become this angry man, drawing on his reaction during the lawsuit story arc. But notice that in both cases, a part of the issue causing Eddie's anger is not having Buck. Yes, back in s3 Eddie was dealing with Shannon’s death, but he doesn’t really start losing it until he also can no longer speak to Buck. Similarly, in the coma dream, he becomes Angry Guy due to the loss of Chris, but that is tied in with the absence of Buck in his life. In other words, losing Buck causes Eddie SUCH grief, that it has no other way out except for rage. ~~
Tumblr media
Did you notice how once again, Buck got to be Madney’s truth teller? He did that first in 208, when he realized Madney are basically dating. Interestingly, everything he told Maddie about them was also true for him and Eddie. Then in this ep, he tells Chim Madney basically should be married, since they already share every other part of domestic and committed life. Obviously this will come into play soon. So just remember that once again, his words can be easily applied to Buddifer as well, plus Buck’s truth teller status was paralleled back in s2 with Maddie in 204, when she asked her brother about his newfound boy crush on Eddie... ~~
Tumblr media
Okay, last one, but I just had to share with you maybe my fave parallel from this ep. You might have noticed in my 610 meta how much I think the lightning stroke parallels the shooting arc. Well, this was true with one of the sweetest moments in the ep’s conclusion. Just like how, at the end of 414, we got to witness Eddie hugging Chris while Buck watched on, so we get to see Buck hugging their son while Eddie looks on now. Except Eddie isn’t just looking. He enables the hug by helping Chris into Buck’s arms. Tell me again: how is this not a family? How are these men not partners, dedicated and loving towards each other in every way that matters...? ~~

I didn't see temptation tuesday going around but I am thinking about like 15 years from now a new recruit coming to the 118 and being greeted by friendly captain Diaz with the birthmark and hair all sprinkled with gray and the fondness for nicknames and penchant for making extremely organized lists and "oh my kid is about your age" and he makes the best food when it's his turn in the kitchen oh my god, but everyone else on the team talks up his rivalry with the other captain Diaz over at the 133 and like Buck seems so nice the new recruit cant imagine its that bad. And then one day they're out at a big fire and the 133 is already there and Buck saunters up like "well well well if it isn't firefighter Diaz" and Eddie is like "it's Captain Diaz to you" and his back is turned so the probie cant see the absolutely fond look on his face. They're like oh shiiiiiit the rivalry is real!!! But the captains Diaz seem to work really well together and Eddie ends up having to go in the structure and gets his shoulder dislocated or something and Buck knows he has to stay out here and does, they've done this over and over, he trusts both their teams to have their backs, but he also doesn't really breathe until Eddie's sitting at the back of an ambulance with a paramedic popping his shoulder back into place. They hold each other for a minute and the probie who's like handling hoses here at their first five alarm a few feet away is like BUG EYES at them as Eddie is like alright when's your shift over you wanna just pick me up from the hospital? And Buck is like yeah not too long left, I'll be there, I love you. And then when the ambulance has pulled away he sees the look on the probies face and cracks up. "They told you about our rivalry, huh?" He smiles, eyes all crinkly. "Yep, it's true... For almost one whole shift I hated that man's guts. And I've loved him ever since."

hi pia i'm thinking about heart eyes diaz again so "15. watching their oblivious s/o lovingly" spoke to me
frida my love! so true, it fits perfectly <3
[read on ao3]
When Bobby offered Eddie the spot on the 118, he fully intended for him to become Buck’s partner on the job. He picked him specifically for that, feeling like Eddie could be exactly the kind of person Buck needed to become the amazing firefighter he had the potential to be.
He also hoped they’d get along on a personal level too, obviously – his entire team is built on that hope. Eddie was supposed to fit with all of them, but Buck most of all.
Now, as he’s standing in the firehouse kitchen with a clear view of Eddie at the table, his chin resting on his hand as he watches Buck explaining something to Hen with big gestures across from him, Bobby can’t help but think that this all worked out much better than he could ever have hoped.
They’ve had their ups and downs – Buck and Eddie, yes, but all of them, really – but if that time a year or two where their team was splintering was good for anything, it was making it clear just how lucky they are to be working with this team. How lucky they are to have this family, at work and outside of it.
Eddie’s face is soft, almost tender, as he looks at Buck, who’s still focused on Hen.
It gives Bobby pause.
These two have had a special connection from nearly the beginning on, except for that short period where Buck’s irrational fear of being replaced translated to hostility. Since then, Bobby has watched them become friends, then best friends very quickly, and eventually, they grew into their own little family unit within their bigger family.
He’s aware of this, aware of how important they are to each other. How could he not? He’s seen them go through the worst and the best times together, seen them support each other, seen them grieve for each other.
He’s even seen this expression on Eddie’s face before, usually in flashes or from far away. Never as open and unguarded, so obviously full of love, without caring who sees it.
Bobby turns back to the food he’s preparing and can’t help thinking that maybe he’s missed one more layer of it after all.
So when, two weeks later, Bobby gets another up close look at the look on Eddie’s face while Buck is stumbling his way through an explanation for why they need disclosure of relationship forms, he’s not completely surprised.
“So we, uh, wanted to talk to you because– You see, Eddie and I, we sort of, um, realized recently,” Buck stammers, and all the while, Eddie smiles at the side of his face like he’s the best thing he’s ever seen. “That what we f-feel for each other, is, um–”
“Buck,” Bobby interrupts him gently. “Are you trying to tell me that the two of you are in a relationship?”
“Yes, he is,” Eddie says, and he’s still smiling at Buck, who doesn’t seem to have noticed. “We are.”
At that, Buck turns towards him and his face melts into a smile like he can’t help it.
“Yeah,” he says, without looking away from Eddie.
Bobby watches them smile at each other for a minute, fondly, but eventually, he clears his throat.
Eddie blinks and turns to him first. “Um, sorry. So, what forms do we have to fill out? And is there anything else we need to do?”
“We– We know there’s a married couple working the same shift at the 139, so we’re good, right? We can keep working together?” Buck asks worriedly.
“I don’t see why not,” Bobby says. “I’ve got a whole stack of forms I can give you to take home with you, you can bring them back signed on your next shift. Apart from that, it’s up to my recommendation. If I find that you can’t work together with appropriate professionalism anymore, then I can recommend that one of you is moved to another station. But you’re not in the same chain of command and I assume that your feelings at least aren’t all that new, are they?”
“They’re not,” both of them say at almost the same time, then smile at each other again.
“Then I see no reason why you shouldn’t work just as well together now that you’re making it official,” Bobby says, and finally lets the captain act drop with a smile. “So you’re happy?”
“Yeah,” Buck breathes. “Yeah, Bobby, we’re so happy.”
Eddie reaches for his hand and Buck grips it tightly.
“Disgustingly so, if you believe Christopher,” Eddie grins, and Bobby laughs.
“Well, I’m really happy for you. You both deserve happiness, and looking at you right now – well, it just makes sense that you found it with each other.”
“Thanks, Bobby,” Eddie says, eyes bright.
Bobby remembers him sitting in front of him like this, but alone, adrift, scared. He remembers how worried he was that he’d never be happy.
And Buck – how lost he used to feel, never aware of how loved he already was by the people in his life, always chasing after the idea he’d built up in his head.
Well, it kind of makes Bobby want to congratulate himself for pairing these two up.
A year later, while Bobby is recounting the story of Buck and Eddie from his view at their wedding reception, his eyes keep straying to the grooms.
Buck is watching him with teary eyes and a wobbly smile that makes Bobby choke up a little, but Eddie is looking at Buck. He’s wearing that same tender, lovesick expression Bobby has seen on his face so many times by now, and he finds himself hoping that the wedding photographer will capture it in one of their photos, because he’d like Buck to get a good look at it.
He knows that Buck knows that Eddie loves him, but knowing Buck, it wouldn’t hurt for him to see photographic evidence of the naked adoration on his new husband’s face.
But he shouldn’t have worried, because when Buck turns to look at Eddie, his expression doesn’t waver at all. Buck doesn’t seem surprised to see it, either, so clearly he’s not as oblivious as Bobby may have thought.
Good, he thinks. Everything is exactly as it’s supposed to be, and better than he ever could have hoped.
He smiles and lifts his glass to finish his toast. “To Buck and Eddie. May you always look at each other the way you are right now.”

fic recs: archive edition 17
Let's start the week off right by diving back into fall 2021! I was in a Mood all of last week, so here are some fics that are guaranteed to make you smile and feel like everything is right with the world.
Previous rec posts are here!
Until Forever by @elvensorceress The Buckley-Diaz family celebrate Eddie's birthday at the loft. The whole fic feels like being wrapped in a soft, pink cloud. 3.3k words, rated G
sunlight (in one curve) by @tawaifeddiediaz Eddie wakes up and observes all the little ways in which Buck is present in his home. Almost painfully soft domesticity, the kind of cute that makes you want to rip it to pieces because your feelings are too overwhelming. 4k words, rated G
shout if you want my heart by @hattalove Buck has filled Eddie's fridge with meals to last a week while he's on a roadtrip and Eddie is working extra shifts, and Eddie has a crisis over how much Buck takes care of both him and Christopher. This is not tagged as tooth-rotting fluff but it should be. 5.9k words, rated T
Say Anything...As Long As It's I Love You by allyasavedtheday (@littlespoonevan) In which Buck loves romcoms and Eddie thinks maybe he can take some inspiration from them to figure out how to tell Buck he loves him. Funny and sweet like a romcom ought to be! 5.7k words, rated T
all for one and one for always by lecornergirl (@clusterbuck) Buck joins Eddie at a parent-teacher night at Christopher's school, and finds out that everyone thinks they're married and that Eddie has just run with it. A true final act of idiots to lovers. 1.8k words, rated G
Happy reading!

Weekly Recap | November 6th-12th 2023
Tumblr media
Still struggling with putting these out on Mondays! (Also, I don't know if you've realized this by now, but when I discover an author, I sometimes go wild on their ao3 page so.... yep that's a thing that happened )
Complete
Got Weird by Daisies_and_Briars (Getting Together, Post-S6 | 10K | Explicit): Shortly after Buck and Natalia break up, Eddie gets tipsy and makes a rather forward move. Then immediately panics (not that Eddie panics, of course) and backpedals. Eddie spirals, Buck is confused. Lots of spontaneous kissing ensues.
next to your heartbeat (where i should be) by lecornergirl/ @clusterbuck (Getting Together | 2K | Teen): “You always look at Buck like that.” Eddie swallows. “Like what?” “The same way you look at me,” Christopher says and flips to the next photo like it’s nothing.
you showed up just in time by lecornergirl/ @clusterbuck (Post S5E6: Brawl In Cell Block 9-1-1 | 1,4K | General): can i come over, typed out quickly and sent before he has time to overthink it. Eddie texts back almost immediately. No. A key turns in his door and Eddie walks in, Christopher in tow.
calling out for somebody to hold tonight by lecornergirl/ @clusterbuck (Eddie Coming Out | 3K | Teen): “Everything okay?” the bartender asks.  “I’m in love with my best friend,” Eddie admits, just for the novelty of saying it out loud. The bartender winces in sympathy. “And you don’t think—” “Oh, never,” Eddie says, with a laugh that sounds hollow even to his own ears. “Can I get another tequila?”
never know what you might find (when dreams come true) by lecornergirl/ @clusterbuck (Getting Together | 5K | Explicit): “Fuck, it’s so stupid,” Eddie says. “It’s embarrassing. I mean, I had one dream about the guy—okay, two dreams, whatever—and now I’m, fucking, tripping over my own feet and knocking things over, and like, my pulse is racing and my mouth goes all dry and—” “And you’re sure you’re not attracted to him?” Frank asks.
(yesterday my life was duller) now everything is technicolour by lecornergirl/ @clusterbuck (Established Buddie | 1,4K | General): "Eddie," he says. "I love you, but did you really have to make your move five minutes before we started a twenty-four-hour shift?" "Sorry," Eddie says. "Next time, I'll make sure to plan my spontaneous, blurted-out love confession a little better."
cuffing season by lecornergirl/ @clusterbuck (Getting Together | 6K | Explicit): “Hen and Chimney think we won’t be able to make it twenty-four hours handcuffed together,” Eddie says. “Oh, we so could,” Buck says.
all for one and one for always by lecornergirl/ @clusterbuck (Getting Together | 1,8K | General): "Why am I here, anyway?" Buck asks, looking around at all of the parents and teachers milling around the foyer of Christoper's school. "I mean, you know I don't mind, but you made it sound really—" He's interrupted by the sound of a woman's voice, somewhere on Eddie's other side. "Mr Diaz, there you are! And this must be the husband." Buck whirls to look at Eddie, because—if Eddie has a husband, this is the first he's hearing of it.
maybe even true by withoutthetiger/ @rewritetheending (Getting Together, Season 4 | 2K | Explicit): An argument between Buck and Eddie turns into something more.
I Could Never Forget You, Not Really by browney3dgirl6/ @hoodie-buck (Amnesia | 3K | General): An accident at work leaves Buck injured, and when he comes to, he doesn't remember anyone, at least, not until his best friend walks in.
the one where they met because of chris by browney3dgirl6/ @hoodie-buck (Different First Meeting AU | 10K | General): the one where Chris meets Buck first, inevitably bringing his two dads together.
You Could Be The One I Keep by browney3dgirl6 / @hoodie-buck (Didn't Know They Were Dating | 6K | Teen): The one where Eddie thinks they're in a relationship, Buck oblivious to the entire thing.
if I asked you to stay, would you? by browney3dgirl6/ @hoodie-buck (Different First Meeting, Tsunami | 6K | Teen): “Sir, are you ok? Can you tell me your name?” What was with the formalities? “Buck. Evan Buckley of the 118. And uh, I’m fine.” Buck gestured to the air around him, sighing aloud, as he gave the guy a smug wink. “Just a little wet is all.”
I want to love you (but I don't know how) by browney3dgirl6/ @hoodie-buck (Post S5E10: Wrapped In Red | 11K | Explicit): Buck buys him and Eddie touch bracelets, not wanting either of them to feel disconnected after Eddie leaves. They help, but the real thing is still better.
Out Of Order, Still In Line by callmenewbie/ @callmenewbie (S6E07: Cursed, PWP | 6K | Explicit): When Buck finally gets to the Clinic, the long awaited release doesn’t seem to come; cue Eddie to the rescue.
baby, how'd we end up here? by withmeornotatall (Safe Haven Baby | 15K | Teen): the safe haven baby fic where buck falls in love and eddie asks him out on a date - not necessarily in that order
the fool and the lover by withmeornotatall (S6, Getting Together | 5K | Teen):  buck breaks down, eddie is there, and psychics are real actually
You're making my head hurt. by wikiangela/ @wikiangela (Getting Together | 1K | Not Rated): Eddie's really tired and accidentally confesses his love for Buck.
You love this, don't you? by wikiangela/ @wikiangela (Getting Together | 3K | Mature): Clipboard Buck makes a reappearance, and Eddie's forced to confront his feelings.
All I need is to call you home by wikiangela/ @wikiangela (Post S5E6: Brawl In Cell Block 9-1-1 | 2K | General): After being held hostage and threatened, Buck can't stop worrying about Eddie and Chris. And so he finds himself in front of Eddie's house at three in the morning.
I could get lost in the feelings (just say that you belong to me) by wikiangela/ @wikiangela (PWP, Getting Together | 15K | Explicit): Or, Buck's going on a date, Eddie's so jealous he finally snaps and reveals his feelings, which leads to a passionate evening in Buck's kitchen.
me and you only equals love by wikiangela/ @wikiangela (Post-Poker Date | 6K | Explicit): Eddie is horny and in love, and after the poker date, he finally kisses Buck - and things unfold from there.
I'd marry you with paper rings by wikiangela/ @wikiangela (Marriage Proposal | 3K | General): “If we’re not married by the time we’re, like, forty, we should just marry each other.” he chuckles, and downs the rest of his beer. And Eddie… Eddie knows it’s a joke. Obviously. It can’t be anything but. But still, it does something to him. “Why wait? Let’s just do it now and get it over with.”
There’s no way that it’s not going there (with the way that we’re looking at each other) by wikiangela/ @wikiangela (Getting Together | 6K | Not Rated): 5 times people wrongly assume Buck and Eddie are together + 1 time it's actually true.
I can't love you any more (than I do now) by wikiangela/ @wikiangela (Getting Together | 2K | General): Eddie's pretty sure he and Buck are dating and kind of living together. Neither acknowledges it, until Eddie finally does.
i'd swim to your call on my phone by heartbeatdiaz / @loserdiaz (Canon Divergent, Dad Buck, Dispatcher Eddie | 8K | Teen): Buck's daughter keeps calling 9-1-1 for help with her homework, Eddie is smitten and apparently 9-1-1 works better than Tinder.
i have dreams where i kiss you and it’s pink by fleetinghearts/ @shitouttabuck (Getting Together | 6K | Teen): or, jee-yun buckley-han's third birthday party is in dire need of some fairy tale magic and buck's attempt to save the day might just be the thing that finally kills eddie
his hand in the dark by hattalove/ @hattalove (Getting Together | 5K | Teen): in which eddie has a beer, dances with a stranger, and does some borderline indecent things in the street with the love of his life.
WIP
in my head by yourcatfishfriend/ @your-catfish-friend (Friends With Benefits | 5/8 | 17K | Explicit): Buck is confidently bisexual. Eddie isn't sure. Buck helps him figure it out.
🔥 Things We're All Too Young to Know by Daisies_and_Briars/ @cal-daisies-and-briars (Canon, S1 through S6 | 98/? | 257K | Mature): This is a love story. Even if it doesn’t always look like it. Even if it doesn’t always feel like it. A look back on Eddie and Buck's lives up to now, and what led them to each other, interpreted from the current 9-1-1 canon.
Re-Read
please? (can't say no) by withmeornotatall (S5, Getting Together | 5K | Teen): chris eavesdrops and misunderstands, buck mediates and overthinks, eddie tries desperately to communicate even as he's foiled at every turn
not all of us are heroes (not all of us are brave) by withmeornotatall (Post-S6 | 6K | General): buck and natalia break up, eddie decides to introduce his girlfriend to his son, christopher knows way too much, and the 118's wine night has never been quite so eventful
I Haven't Found A Better Title For This Than "Read This In The Six Months Before I Made This Blog And It Somehow Made Its Way To My History Now So I'm Reccing It Post-Facto"
🔥 the light's been out though, baby by hattalove/ @hattalove (Post S5E6: Brawl In Cell Block 9-1-1 | 15K | Mature): or, six months after the near-fatal shooting of a member of the LAFD, footage of the incident surfaces on social media.
everything's coming up milhouse by hammersmiths/ @henswilsons (Post-S5E10: Wrapped In Red, LAFD Liaison Eddie | 4K | Teen): or, Eddie mans the LAFD Twitter account. Buck tries to be supportive. (Part 1 of Mr LAFD Updates Man)
in you, darling, i trust by hammersmiths (LAFD Liaison Eddie 10K | Teen): or, five times someone recognises Eddie as the LAFD Updates man. (Part 2 of Mr LAFD Updates Man)

Do you have the most favorite scene from your wips?
Hi Diana!
Yesss I have so many scenes I love, but this has to be up there with my favourites. It's from near the end of my s7 fic (tentative title: A Minor Delay), which will be starting to post soooon!! I just love it when they talk to each other lmao
"What happened?" Buck looks over at Eddie, and he swallows. Who else could he tell? Who else would understand the thing he hasn't talked about yet, the deep, squirmy discomfort he's been grappling with all this time? He can't lead with that, though. Instead, he opts for the straw that broke the camel's back. "She liked my parents."  Eddie winces, and it brings a trace of a smile to Buck's face. Eddie has never needed Buck to prove that his parents were a problem. Even before Buck himself had known the whole story, Eddie had been on his side. Still, that isn't everything. That isn’t the heart of why he’d broken up with Natalia. The conversations they’d never had, the reason Buck had avoided those conversations for so long. "I just—" he casts his mind back to another conversation, so many months ago in a different kitchen. "I died, Eddie. I died, and everything felt different but nothing actually changed.” He takes a shaky breath, staring into his cup. “And then I met Natalia, and she was…” Buck searches for the words, and finally looks up at Eddie. “It felt like a sign. With her job, and how we met, it felt like there was finally a reason why it happened. Like maybe she was the reason. I wanted it to be true, so I sort of... Went with the flow. Tried to convince myself it felt right, even though it never really did." If Buck’s honest with himself, he’s known all along that Natalia's reactions to the time he spent with Eddie weren't the real reason he'd let himself drift away. Taylor had disliked Eddie too, and Buck had still spent a significant amount of their relationship over at the Diaz house.  If he was truly honest with himself... "I'm sorry, Eddie." "You're sorry?" Eddie sets down his coffee, only halfway to his mouth. He frowns, confused. "I am. I... I've been a pretty shit friend lately. For months, really. Ever since…” he waves his hand, indicating all of it. “I guess I sort of knew all along that if I talked to you about this stuff, you'd call me on my bullshit. You’d point out how little sense it made, and I just really wanted it to be right. I wanted it to work out so bad, Eddie. I wanted… I needed it all to mean something.”  This time, Buck can’t fight the tears that come to his eyes. “You’re the one who sees me, Eddie. You’ve always been able to see me, the real me, behind all my bullshit."

haven't written much over the last few days bc all i do is work and watch oth - but getting back to it bc my one and only writing goal for this month is to finish and post the married buddie smut and I will do it 😂 (hopefully lol) so here's a tiny little snippet just to motivate myself 😂 - they're obsessed with being husbands and this is all the fic is about 😂
prev snippet
___
One of Buck’s hand’s settles in Eddie’s hair, and follows as Eddie goes lower, leaving kisses down Buck’s body until he gets to his groin. Then, he smirks and looks up at Buck’s pretty face, catching him already looking down at him. “I love you.” he whispers, then leaves a soft little kiss on Buck’s hip bone.
“I love you, husband.” Buck responds, cupping Eddie’s cheek, the last word impossible to say without a smile forcing itself onto Buck’s face. Eddie knows the feeling. Him and Buck being married still seems like a dream, like something he’s wanted for so long, it’s surreal to think it came true. It makes him want to scream it at the top of his lungs. Buck is his husband. Buck is a Diaz. Buck is his. He is Buck’s. They’re bound together, till death to them part, and hopefully longer. Their very souls belong to each other, and Eddie doesn’t think he could be any happier.

tidbit tuesday because i am finally writing again and i am giving myself an excuse to share that
catholic eddie having a sexuality crisis you’re my one true love actually
Our father, who art in heaven – hallowed be thy name.
Eddie couldn’t help but laugh, a little, as he murmured the prayer. Hallowed be thy name. He knew the prayer talked about God, their holy father, but the prayer had always made him think of his own father, of the way Ramon Diaz was a hallowed man in his own right, how he parented with an iron fist and expected to be obeyed.
Things were getting better now, with his dad. Maybe – maybe that was part of the fear. Eddie had always been afraid of letting people down, but more than anyone, he was afraid of letting his father down – of seeing that look of disappointment set into every crease of his father’s face, an expression he’d been on the receiving end of for more of his childhood than he’d like to admit. Eddie had tried so hard to make sure he was never on the receiving end of that look again, but nothing he had ever done was good enough – not marrying Shannon, not the way he had tried to take responsibility for his young family, not the army, not the man he had been when he’d come home from Afghanistan.
Distance had lessened the number of disappointed looks, but Eddie knew that was because he was simply not seeing them anymore; he was sure his father sometimes frowned at the phone when they’d finally call, silted conversation about Christopher, and life at the firehouse, the best either of them could muster.
It wasn’t perfect, but it was getting better.
Eddie wasn’t sure if he was ready to blow all that progress up. It was selfish, to want to maintain the status quo at the cost of his own happiness, but he couldn’t help it. Eddie, despite what the circumstances of his life would imply, didn’t like conflict – not the fundamental, existential kind of conflict this would result in, the kind of conflict where his character and worth as a father would be called into question.

WIP Wednesday
Figuring out how to weave Shannon and Eddie's love story and relationship breakdown into the NHL AU has been a fun and complicated little game. Here's a little snippet of Buck and Eddie bonding on a road trip and Eddie telling Buck about Shannon.
And just as a reminder, in my house we love and respect Shannon Diaz. There will be no Shannon bashing in this fic, but there will be Buck's POV as Eddie and Shannon work to overcome a lot of hurt feelings to become co-parents and friends again.
“Shannon’s family moved to El Paso our freshman year of high school and she was devastated because they moved away from all of her friends and from her rink. I saw her at school a few times, but the first time we really talked was at the rink. She figure staked and her mom had finally managed to scrape together enough money for some ice time for her,” Eddie says and Buck can picture young Eddie watching a faceless girl spin on the ice. “I think I fell in love with her that day, but we didn’t get together until right before I left for training with the U.S. National team for U18 Worlds our junior year of high school.” “That was 2017 right?” Buck asks because he remembers that year. It was the year before their draft and the U.S. team was stacked - they had Brady Tkachuk, Quinn Hughes, and Eddie fucking Diaz. The Canadian team hadn’t even made it out of the quarterfinals against Sweden. “I hated your guts.” “You didn’t even play us,” Eddie laughs and it sounds so fucking nice. Buck didn’t know a laugh could sound like that, deep and rich.  “You were so good,” Buck says, voice maybe too earnest. “Do you want me to talk about Worlds or do you want me to tell you my story?” Buck mimes zipping his lips and gives Eddie a closed mouth smile to prove his point.  “I come back after Worlds and Shannon and I are inseparable. She’s so cool and funny and also a total dork. I learned how to do lifts so she could practice them. I- I loved her so much,” Eddie says and Buck knows it's true. He knows in his bones that Eddie loved this woman with his whole heart. “Senior year was good, great even. I had to leave a few times for U.S. national team stuff, but I got lucky and mom found a great team for me in Tucson so I didn’t leave home like you had to. I just had to drive four hours there and four hours back every weekend.” “And then the week before the draft we found out she was pregnant, after I’d already committed to Michigan, Shannon was torn between taking a year off to travel and going to Michigan with me to try to walk on to their figure skating team. She - she was good, but her family didn’t have the resources to pay for a great trainer like mine did so she kind of got left behind in terms of her skating,” Eddie sounds sad. He sounds like it hurts him that she didn’t get the same chances he did.  “So you decided to sign your entry level contract instead of going to school,” Buck says, the pieces falling neatly into place in his head. Eddie, 18 years old getting ready to play for one of the best university programs in the U.S. and realizing he’s going to have bills to pay, bills that you can’t pay when you’re a full time student-athlete.

This is for my Buddie friends. My buddies, if you will.
I'm recently super in love with Eddie and Buck are already married when Buck joins the 118 and it just never comes up. Or they don't believe him. Or I don't know. It doesn't matter. Whatever the reason, the 118 fam and friends don't know that Buck is married. I've been reading fics like this recently. They're fun.
But there also aren't very many of them. So, first of all, if you have any recs, please send them to me.
Second of all, I had to come up with my own idea for something like this so keep reading to see what it is.
Trigger Warnings: canon typical violence and abuse (Maddie and Doug plus Buck), life threatening situations typical and atypical to the show, witness protection, Eddie potentially thinking Buck is dead so maybe tempory character death, and I think I'm going to make it where the Buckley parents are killed in a car accident or something. I would tag more things if I actually wrote this or anything.
So. Let's start at the beginning. Evan and Maddie Buckley are living with their parents when Doug comes into the picture. Maddie is so in love with him, it's a little concerning. At least, according to her parents. They are very adamant that she needs to stop seeing him.
She doesn't. She fights them tooth and nail to be with Doug. Her little brother Evan is torn between supporting her and agreeing with their parents. But he's young. He doesn't understand.
Sadly, their parents are killed in a car accident. Maddie fights to keep Buck and she's able to become his legal guardian. Doug becomes the dad Buck always wanted. For a while, it's good. It's great even. They're a small little family, but they're so, so happy. It's amazing.
Until it isn't. Until Doug shows his true colors. He gets so angry so fast. And might be young but he's not stupid. He knows that Maddie is hurting. So he starts acting out. When Doug is mad at him, he leaves Maddie alone. That's all that Evan cares about. If only he could do more. But for Maddie, he can at least be the one who ends up in the ER. Not her.
But Maddie can't let him keep doing this. She has to protect her little brother. They live in this horrible limbo for a few years until Evan is 18. He crashed his new bike that Doug bought for him. He's going to be so mad. He has to warn Maddie. Or maybe... maybe he can convince her to leave with him.
"You and me, Maddie. Come on. Let's go. Just the two of us."
And she wants to leave. She does. But she knows that Doug won't let them. Won't let her. But she agrees. She knows what she has to do. The next day, she watches him leave in the Jeep. She's battered and bruised, but watching him leave actually feels like a weight lifting off her chest.
Evan travels. He goes everywhere he can, trying to find somewhere he belongs. He worries about Maddie every day and sends post cards to her work so she knows he's okay. She holds onto them like a lifeline.
Evan eventually ends up in Texas. That's where he meets Eddie. Helping out on a ranch. It's hard work, harder than anything else he's done up to this point. But being there with Eddie actually makes it fun. He never wants to leave. He even gets invited over to the Diaz house where he meets a tiny little Christopher. The Diaz family is the one he always wanted. So warm and fill of love. They take him in, teach him Spanish, teach him how to make the best food. Teach him about family.
It's no surprise to anyone when he and Eddie start dating. He keeps Maddie updated through his post cards until one day he gets one in return. He recognizes her hand writing. She says she's so happy for him. And how she wishes she could meet Eddie and his son. But she also says that Buck shouldn't send her anymore cards. How Doug found one and how he had wanted to go to that place and bring Evan back home.
And, well, Evan can't do that. He needs to let Maddie know that he's okay. So every so often him and Eddie take a little road trip to send a postcard to Maddie from somewhere else. Just to let her know he's okay. Plus, him and Eddie are going to get married and she has to be there.
But on the day they're supposed to get married there's no sign of her. He's disappointed but he doesn't let it get him down. He's marrying his best friend. He's adopting a son. His life couldn't get any better.
And then, of course, it all comes crashing down. Maddie's friend at the hospital, her only friend there, calls Evan.
"Maddie hasn't been to work in a couple days. She hasn't called or anything. I'm worried about her."
Evan has to leave. Eddie wants to come with him, but Evan won't have his family anywhere near Doug. And he's coming back with his sister this time.
Long story, short, Evan goes back home to check on Maddie. She's hurt when he finds her and he's already called 9-1-1 when Doug finds them. It's ugly. And they watch Doug kill someone. One of their neighbour's I guess. And the police show up. And they're all rushed to the hospital. And they're met with even more police. And the FBI. Turns out Doug wasn't just the bad guy. He was A bad guy. A bad guy in a whole family of bad guys.
And so Buck and Maddie have to go into Witness Protection until Doug and his family are taken care of for good. Evan doesn't even get to say goodbye to Eddie and Christopher. He just gets carried away to a new place to start a new life.
Alone.
He ends up in Los Angeles, CA. He's going crazy. He can't talk to Maddie or Eddie or Christopher. He can talk to his agent. That's about it. Despite his agents better judgement, he goes out for the fire department. He's too restless to do anything else. He has to help someone. He needs to do something useful. Meaningful.
And that's how Kyle "Buck" Jones joined the 118. How'd he get his nickname? No one knows.
