9. Love in a Hopeless Place by @dragonsandotters-dh [Remus/Narcissa, T, 4.6k] 💔🐺 So much hurt but also so much comfort. Draco gets bitten by Greyback. A heart-wrenching and hopeful look into the aftermath.

10. Male Bonding by musigneus [Remus/Severus, E, 9.8k] 🔥👀 This is angsty fuck-or-die to the max. Trapped in a cellar before the full moon. But it's SO GOOD and a somewhat hopeful ending.

12. Table for One by @littlesixxwrites [Dean/Blaise, T, 3.2k] 🌼🎄 I LOVE THIS SHIP. Bean is the cutest. This fic has instantly smitten Blaise and equally enamored Dean. Lovely fluffy fic that made me squeal with happiness.

13. Maybe This Time (alternatively: once more, with feeling!) by @wanderingdonut [Regulus, G, 4.6k] 🤣👻 THIS FIC!! I died laughing from this fic, then I came back to life cackling and died all over again. Ghost Regulus is perfect. Snarky and entitled and wallowing in death lol.

14. toxicology by @batmansymbol [Hermione, G, 2.9k] 💔💌 A fascinating dive into the possible implication of Harry being a horcrux for so many years. I love how we view everything through Hermione's unreliable narration.

What are your thoughts on 1975 fans trying to attribute a lot of Easter eggs to Matty in the new video? :( Someone on Twitter put a visual together of all the highlights and it’s so annoying because when it’s laid out like that I see it and I hate that I see it. Just like lighting visuals being very similar, and particular dates being significant to the 1975 and/or Taylor. For example, the July 9th 1:38 people are saying is for Taylor and Matty’s birthdays (the 13th and the 8th). I guess the timeline makes sense because early April when she filmed this video would have been around the time when she was hanging out with him and doing whatever pr nightmare that was…talk me off the ledge pls! Lol.

The lighting in I Can See You Lyrics Video is the bisexual lighting and fits really well with the theme of the song.

Her comparing being in love with another woman to being a spy and having to navigate cautiously to not be seen.

The spy scene is remisnescent of a commercial she did:

The videoclip has a lot of references to Look What You Made Me Do both MV and Eras Tour number, and I think it's very important and meant to point at Karma.

11/28/2021: Ranboo is cut down escaping

Some things I love. Some things I love more 

than that. Some things keep me sitting in this cell. Some things 

I stay on my solitary perch rising out of 

the water for.  Some things pull this sheet tight over my head, over the open viscera.

Some things shred the muslin. 

Some things leave ghosts. Some things leave me 

waiting out here. Some things watch the snow 

knit its heavy blankets over all of the roofs and windowsills and 

the rims of the flowerpots of frozen soil and still my hands 

slip through like vapor when I try to brush it off. I am still here. Have I not always

been every piece of me emerging from the bisected half, impossible

to look in the eye? There are still things left inside, bundled in cloth,

for you to take home. There are still things worth

mourning. I am still half a husband yet.

2/4/2022: Awesamdude dies in Pandora’s Vault

I am exceptional at waiting. down under this ticking absence of clocks and water gone still I sit and stare and count the cracks of obsidian shedding its dim tears not for me and not for this growing lack inside my gut staved off by the disappearing muscle of my forearms and how no one is coming for me but him. ambivalent to which one of us looks at the other afraid and angry because in the black belly of our collective wanting both of us have come back home for no one else has ever thought to live here and no one else has learned to count the ticking towards nothing. but for you. nothing is ever too good to be true except for everything as I know only absolutes and the ultimate one is if either of us thought we’d let the other would walk out of here or die then I may as well have built you a cobblestone box instead.

combat, talents, abilities

-        hydro staff (polearm + orb catalyst fusion) called “oasis”; other characters with this weapon primarily use it as a polearm, and only certain sumeru scholars know how to infuse the catalyst part into it to inflict the wet status

-        ^ base atk 43 at lvl 1/passive increases crit dmg by 22%. ability is called “deserted dream”: user’s elemental res. doubles (chances are 35%; increases with refinement rank), also increasing it for other party members by 75% (if 35% fails, this is guaranteed for the user; otherwise, this just applies to the other party members) for 20s. cooldown is 30s.

-        physical dps + enabling

-        charged attack has her stick the staff in the ground, jump up, and literally swing around it via the staff’s orb while physically kicking people; cause yk, why not?

-        normal attack has her (1) forward lunge (2) swipe arm, whacking w/ floating catalyst (3) spin in a 315 or smth, again whacking w catalyst (4) hold polearm upside down and use floating catalyst to vault upwards (5) bada bing bada boom use the staff as a hammer

-        holding the charged attack for over three seconds has her doing a plunging attack, using up abt 50% of her stamina but dealing 150% dmg

       wouldn’t it be funny if she rolled around on her staff while using it as a scooter

-        her skill “rainlight” summons small stars to fall down on opponents, dealing AoE hydro dmg and applying the wet status as the catalyst on amika’s staff glows to life. hp restored from the stars scales off amika’s elemental resonance. if combined with opponents affected by cryo or pyro, stars deal an additional 20% dmg at lvl 1 (70% when talent is maxed out), while electro opponents share damage taken every 2s. skill lasts for 15s/cd is 20s.

-        her burst “no longer luminous” has amika unlocking the catalyst from her staff, throwing it up in the air, and whacking it with her polearm baseball-style, summoning a giant black hole that pulls in nearby opponents and renders them immobile, dealing physical dmg over time. those that aren’t pulled in are affected by massive AoE hydro dmg, and any other elements that combine with the black hole deal an additional 25% in elemental dmg. requires 70 energy/cd is 18s.

-        her passive “all by myself!” reduces expedition time by 25%

-        constellation: stella stilanus

-        special dish is from jelebis: she turns them into heart and star shapes, adds powdered sugar at random, and puts a few tiny multicolored roshmalai around the plate. now restores 34% hp and an additional 700 hp every 5s!

-        amika was the granddaughter of great sage azar. his prodigious son had died and his daughter-in-law had disappeared, leaving him with a little girl at the gates of the akademiya. instead of treating her like an actual child, he had tried to raise her as the future great sage to take over his job after he died.

-        ... unfortunately for him, amika hated sitting still and kept breaking her akasha earpiece. seeing as her mother was from aaru village, azar had determined that this was why she was so... unruly. he'd have to quench that in order for her to truly take over his great work.

-        and in amika's opinion, it was as if she'd been damned to eternity. look, she TRIED enrolling in the akademiya, okay? it was just so... suffocating. nobody tried reaching out for help unless they wanted to be seen as weak. nobody attempted to get close to her with good intentions. nobody wanted to rebel against the ridiculous hierarchy based on pure nonsense. anyone that tried releasing themselves from this barrier would be exiled. amika wondered if she, too, would become as unloving as the scholars were. not that she loved anything, but living out of spite wasn't nice.

-        for a bunch of smart folks, the scholars at the akademiya sure were stupid.

-        she tried bringing it up with her grandfather with limited success, if any at all. he decided that instead of promoting her to great sage, he'd denounce her on the day of the jnagarbah. it was a solid punishment for the traitor he'd failed at raising.

-        amika overheard him talking about this plan with the other sages. she should have figured this would happen eventually. with a heavy heart and days of secretly packing and planning, jnagarbah day came.

-        the second azar came into her room to "crown her as the next sage", she'd already escaped. she carried a large bag on her person, the only contents being an orb and a boatload of sunsettias. quite a terrible pick, honestly, but she was a bit short on time.

-        with that, the ex-next sage had left sumeru city.

-        amika ran to the desert. knowing those dumb sages, they wouldn't dare set foot outside of sumeru city or even port ormos. it seemed like the perfect plan. she'd be all alone.

-        ... oh. she was alone.

-        this was a problem.

-        after three days of walking aimlessly and rationing her food to the best of her ability, she sat in the sand and weighed her options. should she go back and endure the sage's puppetry just like always? should she be left to die here? which would be less punishing? wouldn't it be embarrassing if someone found her dead in the sand?

-        before she could reach a conclusion to her whirlwind of thoughts, a foot nudged her knee. she looked up to see a blond man with elaborate clothing, who reached out a hand to her and scowled.

-        "you look like you're going to die out here. come on, i've got food."

-        it did seem like a good deal (especially considering how bad a newborn adventurer is at rationing). with only a nod, she accepted his offer. they went back to his camp and amika resolved to only stay there for the night. she wouldn't want to be a bother after all.

-        the blond man's name was kaveh. he'd been taking a break from studying in the akademiya in order to pursue his own interests, craft, trade, the works. amika found him being in the middle of the desert to be quite strange, but she figured to each their own. despite her self-promise to stay the night, she'd end up sticking around for over half a year as she learned the joy of having something to love. sketching.

-        she'd draw on the back of maps, within scrapped architectural designs, between the page margins of textbooks. every surface she could find would be covered in doodles, whether simple smiley faces or intricate patterns. it became a habit of kaveh's to lend her any design he was having trouble with to see what she could add to his half-baked ideas.

-        being a master blacksmith (his words, not hers) and possessing a vision, he also taught amika to fight. first with the orb catalyst she'd brought with her, then with a long steel beam he'd forged a polearm out of. as reward for mastering both, he'd fused her catalyst and polearm together, turning it into a staff that doubled as what the modern age would call a slingshot-shaped baseball bat. she adored it, carving both of their names into the staff with a sharp rock she'd found nearby. kaveh may have called it defamation, but she'd keep it as a memory for years to come.

-        when kaveh announced that his research was done and that he'd start heading back to the akademiya, amika was noticeably taken aback at first. "why go back?" she had asked, her eyes narrowed. "it's nothing more than a land doomed by the god that left them."

-        kaveh sighed. "like i said, my research is done. plus," he added with a smile, "i'd say you're just about ready." with that, he left in the morning.

-        a month after he'd left for sumeru city, amika had adjusted well to living on her own. she could ration her supplies like a seasoned adventurer, hunt and forage for food easily, and even set up a camp and cook. in her opinion, she may as well have been a veteran with how skilled she had become.

-        that didn't mean it stopped being lonely, though.

-        with kaveh gone, amika had gone back to being quieter. she didn't want to go back to sumeru city, that'd only cause bad memories to resurface. her problem out here was that there wasn't anyone to talk to in particular aside from the wind. not like it'd say anything back. she had a hydro vision, not an anemo one. from the stories she'd heard about their archon, he seemed like a fun guy to hang around. perhaps he'd be a nice companion. yet with each new day passing by of being around nobody whatsoever, it was definitely starting to take a toll on her.

-        and so, she asked the wind. whether out of desperation, exasperation, or the sheer lack of having affection, she'd never be able to tell. either way, the wind decided it was going to kick up a breeze, carry the petals of a sumeru rose with it and send the girl chasing after the petals.

-        sumeru roses were rare around here... that had to be a sign, right?

-        laying her staff orb-down,she kicked it and planted her foot onto the side of the staff, steering the uniscooter through the desert and turning the sand she was riding on into dust. for periods of time, she'd switch between riding her staff and slinging it over her shoulder, running after the wind for a glimpse of something, anything, really.

-        nightfall came before she managed to catch up to the petals in a secluded tropical grove of sorts. hopping off her staff, she reached for the petals and grabbed a fistful of them, save for a single vibrant violet one that waltzed in the air before landing softly on the head of a boy seeming to be around her age slumbering against the base of a tree.

-        he looked like a porcelain doll. amika thought he was almost ethereal for a guy that looked totally out of place in a land like sumeru. sharp eyes, delicate facial features, dark hair that looked as soft as feathers. his clothes were of silk and another material amika couldn't recognize. next to him was a large disk with intricate details, almost brand new. she wondered if the dollface used it as a weapon. if it wasn't for his chest moving up and down rhythmically, she would have cursed the wind for leading her to a fragile corpse still frozen in time.

-        she approached hesitantly, crouching down as quietly as possible. extending a hand towards the boy, she plucked the petal from his head and sighed in relief... but as she turned to go back, a cold hand grabbed her wrist with lightning speed. her eyes darted back to the boy, whose eyelashes fluttered awake as his eyebrows furrowed.

-        "and what, may i ask," his voice was low, but clearly ticked off, "do you think you're doing?" the boy's eyes were almost like glass with how glazed over they seemed. a dull gray clouded them, almost lifeless.

-        she winced, but showed him the petal between her fingers. "easy there, dollface, i'm just grabbing a stray ingredient," she replied. "i'm making fish rolls for us." (she wasn't going to at first, but telling a stranger that she ran after a bunch of petals in the wind seemed really weird.)

-        "us?" he scoffed, but loosened his grip. amika pulled her hand back, rubbing at her now-red wrist. "you don't know me and i don't know you. how do i know you aren't here to kill me like everyone else?"

-        "i dunno who 'everyone else' is supposed to be, but to be quite frank with you, i'm just hungry." she stood up and scanned the landscape, her gaze landing upon an abandoned campsite. grinning, she rubbed her hands together and looked back at the boy at the tree, extending a hand out to him. "now get on your feet. you're going to help me cook over there."

-        "is that an order?"

-        "what am i, a god?" amika sighed, placing her other hand on her hip. "you're all skin and bones. i'm not letting you die of starvation out here."

-        he bit his lip, grumbling. "i don't need your pity--" he managed to get out before his stomach grumbled. after a beat or two, his shoulders slumped and he grabbed her wrist, letting her pull him up. "fine. your pity will be accepted just this once."

-        "it's not pity, pretty boy, it's just what feels right. plus," she added with a smirk, "any resistance will be met with the big circle thing over there turning into a plate." her smile widened at the look of abject horror on his face.

-        leading him to the campsite, she laid out their ingredients and started a fire underneath the pot. "what's your name, anyway?" she asked as she started chopping up the fish.

-        the boy, who had been put in charge of the rose petals, hummed softly. "i don't have one," he mumbled, his fingers brushing against the soft petals. "i'm just... a wanderer, i guess. they don't tend to have names."

-        "huh." a moment passed by. "i'm gonna call you 'dera'."

-        his gaze shifted to her, the wanderer's expression shifting to that of confusion. "you could have chosen anything else," he said, "and you land on that?"

-        she snickered in response. "okay, 'wandy'," she retorted.

-        "... on second thought, dera might be better."

-        within a half hour, they had made enough fish rolls to snack on. laying back against the tree, they sat in silence, the only sound coming from the gale breeze through the flora and the crunching of the rolls. swallowing one down, amika started to fiddle with the ribbons intertwining on her arm.

-        "so," she asked, "what are you doing here in the middle of nowhere?"

-        dera tilted his head, dull gray eyes locking with her own violet ones. "i could ask you the same thing," he said. despite there being nobody else around, he kept his voice quiet, soft. "you did ruin my nap, after all."

-        "please, you're just a light sleeper," amika retorted. "and like i said before, i lost the flower in the wind and had to get it back. then it led me to you." more fiddling, this time with the cuffs on her wrist. "your turn."

-        "like i said before, i'm a wanderer." he pinched the bridge of his nose at her blank expression. "hello? i'm a wanderer. i wander."

-        "ohhhh, that explains it."

-        he nodded, going back to staring at the landscape in front of him. "and via that wandering, i ended up here." his eyes closed, his blunt bangs shifting in the wind. "nobody around but me."

-        "and you've never, like..." the girl made some vague sort of gesture with her hands. "felt lonely or anything?"

-        the gray in his eyes darkened. "i don't experience useless emotions like that." he paused, resting a hand in the grass and grabbing a cluster in his hand. "rather," he added as an afterthought, "i'm not supposed to."

-        "it's okay if you do." she pulled a leg up to rest her head on her knee. "who said you couldn't?"

-        he looked away, but his grip on the grass cluster tightened. "that's not something for you to know."

-        ah, so there actually was someone. maybe someones. amika huffed, her fist balling up as her nails dug into her palm. "then they're as stupid and brain-dead as the akademiya scholars and sages."

-        "you don't seem to like them very much," dera remarked, the corner of his mouth quirking up in a half-amused, half-curious grin of sorts. letting go of the grass, he rested his hand on his thigh and started drumming his fingers absentmindedly.

-        she shrugged and sighed. "yeah, well..." her eyes lowered, her smile now bittersweet. "sometimes you're both not enough and too much at the same time for everyone you meet, y'know?"

-        dera's expression changed. "yeah," he breathed, "i do." without a word, he reached out and gently patted amika's shoulder, soothing both her and himself to an extent he'd rather not talk about. they stayed like that for a few minutes before he pulled the hood of her cloak over her face.

-        "get some rest," he muttered. "i'll gather the supplies. we leave in the morning."

-        "we?" a groggy amika raised her cloak hood just enough to make out his chin. "does this mean we're friends now?"

-        his nose scrunched up. "we aren't friends," he replied curtly. "we'll only travel together."

-        "this isn't a command, is it?"

-        a quick exhale from the wanderer. amika vaguely recognized it as some sort of laughter. "what am i, a god?" he said, then paused. he shook his head and raised the cloak's hood up just enough for her to see his face. his eyes looked more silver than gray. "it's an offer. one that an impulsive flower chaser like you will accept." he poked a finger into her forehead, eliciting her to suddenly tense from the lack of warmth.

-        "you don't know that," she grumbled, then added a "but you're not wrong" as she brushed his hand away, her scowl breaking into a smile as she pulled the hood back over her eyes. "goodnight, wanderer."

-        "goodnight, flower chaser."

-        and despite the wanderer's many vices against anyone he'd surrounded himself with before, he did have to admit it felt a little less lonely now.

-        maybe they could be less lonely together, at least.

卜算子·我住长江头 - Song of Divination · I live at the Long River’s head

我住长江头 君住长江尾 wǒ zhù chángjiāng tóu, jūn zhù chángjiāng wěi I live at the Long River’s head, you live at the Long River’s tail end.

日日思君不见君 共饮长江水 rì rì sī jūn bùjiàn jūn, gòng yǐn chángjiāng shuǐ Day after day, missing you but not seeing you, together, in the Long River’s water we partake.

此水几时休 此恨何时已 cǐ shuǐ jǐ shí xiū, cǐ hèn hé shí yǐ The time when the water’s flow ceases is when resentment for this passes.

只愿君心似我心 定不负相思意 Zhǐ yuàn jūn xīn sì wǒ xīn, dìng bù fù xiāng sī yì May your heart be as mine. The love from which this longing springs shall not be in vain.

Notes

TITLE

The tune pattern for this song is卜算子, commonly translated as Song of Divination. The character卜 (bǔ) is a pictogram often explained as a representation of the cracks that appear on scorched tortoise shells, one of the methods of ancient Chinese divination. And to 算 (suàn), to calculate, is of course another method of divination. There are some different opinions of what this tune pattern is named for. Some say that 子 does not refer to a person, and instead is short for 曲子 - a little song, some say it’s named for ‘a person who does divinations’. Undeniably, there is divination in the name, and a ci is a song. So that’s what I went with!

There are several famous songs with this tune pattern, by Su Shi / Su Dongpo and by Lu You (we should know him quite well by now), of which I would say Li Zhiyi’s might be the most simple yet deeply romantic. This is probably why it’s super famous… that and the fact that it’s in the 300 Song Lyric collection.

I love Su Shi’s song for it’s stubborn loneliness in the cold and also its calm. But Lu You’s is just !!!!!!!!!! makes me want to curl around it like a loving cat. Thinking about them both makes me want to share them too!!!

These are so famous I had no idea they were all using the same tune pattern - and I can’t explain how this one works because Song lyric tune patterns are still a mystery to me. Will share if I ever figure it out, but yeah… I’m nowhere near that point now ahahah. 

BACKGROUND

Li Zhiyi, courtesy name - Duanshu, was a poet of the Northern Song Dynasty and an important member of the Su Dongpo circle. 

(My man Su Shi was very popular and very beloved in his time with many students and even more admirers, we have talked about how he made friends wherever he gets exiled, how he has a good sense of humor and makes fun of himself too). 

Born in 1048 and later becoming a student of Fan Chunren, son of Fan Zhongyan (also a very cool dude! He writes amazing things /cough不以物喜不以己悲cough/, so let’s talk about him someday ~) and passed the imperial exams to become a jinshi in the year 1070 at the age of 22.

Sixteen years later in 1086, Fan Chunren effectively became the prime minister while Li Zhiyi became a scribe at a military division for the central government, and then magistrate for Yuan Prefacture not long after. It was after this time that he began interacting frequently with Su Shi, Huang Tingjian and others from that clique. Li Zhiyi also worked for Su Shi in his Governer’s Office while he was the Governor for Ding Prefecture. 

(From Su Shi’s Baidu entry: In 1093, Empress Dowager Gao passed away, so Emperor Zhezong was in power and the new faction rose in prominence again. Su Shi was eventually relegated far from the capital to Hui Province in 1094, and then Hainan Island in 1097.) 

And so, in 1099, when Li Zhiyi was promoted to supervisor for the vault for incense herbs - a subdivision under the Minister of Revenue, he was censured for once working for Su Shi and suspended from his position. Unfortunately for him, at some point afterwards, he was recommended for the position of Envoy for Hedong (here’s an interesting article in Chinese on the position of Envoy), but struck from the list when he offended the new prime minister in 1101 with an epitaph for Fan Zhongyan, the use of which was disallowed, and was exiled for a time. At least that’s what I’m interpreting from 东都事略, Summary of Events in the Eastern Capital, a book chronicling Northern Song dynasty (960–1126) history, written by Wang Cheng, a Southern Song official in the historiographic compilation bureau.

He was then posted with his family to Taiping Province, where he stayed for four years. In his own words as referenced from 姑溪居士文集, Collected Works of Guxi Hermit, Volume 1 Chapter 21: In the first year, his son and daughter in law left this world, in the second, he fell ill, Spring and Summer passed like trudging through water and he was doing very poorly, in the third year, his wife died too. In the beginning of the fourth year, he suffered from a skin disease and other conditions. 

From 挥麈录 Records of a Horsetail Wisk by Wang Mingqing, a court official of the Southern Song Dynasty, Chapter 6, it seems Li Zhiyi was eventually reinstated as a court official after he was granted amnesty. Cross referencing with events in Emperor Huizhong of Song's rule (he was half-brother of Emperor Zhezong and succeeded the throne after his brother’s death in 1100), it seems that in 1107, there was to be a change of Era Name in the next year and the Emperor had offered sacrifices to the Jade Emperor, Haotian Shangdi (the highest deity in Daoism and Chinese religion from Tang Dynasty onwards); a general amnesty was granted to all as well. But Li Zhiyi did not return to his post, and instead remained in Taiping Prefecture. And this is where someone new and important enters the picture. 

Backtracking five years to 1102, Yang Shu (杨姝) was a courtesan of Taiping Prefecture at this time. We know more about her because Huang Tingjian, courtesy name Luzhi, the well known calligrapher, artist, scholar, government official, and poet of Song Dynasty (mentioned earlier as being close to Su Shi, just in case you forgot), wrote her several poems while he was Prefect there for nine days in 1102. 

Who else was in Taiping Prefecture in 1102? That’s right! Our friend Li Zhiyi.

They played a little poetry writing game, the results of which were recorded in his Collected Works of Guxi Hermit, Chapter 47 as well: 好事近 · 与黄鲁直于当涂花园石洞听杨妹弹履霜操鲁直有词因次韵, (To the tune of) Good Tidings Approach · With Luzhi at Dangtu Garden’s Stone Cave Listening to Yang Shu Pluck Treading in the Frost, Luzhi has lyrics for doing a ciyun. This ciyun just involves writing lyrics according to the rhyme pattern of the original lyric; usually one person writes the first and then another composes a reply in the same pattern. In this case, Huang Tingjian went first, and Li Zhiyi followed. (Let me know if you’d like to see what they wrote!)

During that same period, or perhaps thinking of this day some time after, Li Zhiyi wrote her two more poems to the tune of popular songs. Huang Tingjian wrote one for her as well, calling her a ‘little singer’ in the short prelude to his lyric 好事近, 太平州小妓杨姝弹琴送酒, (To the tune of) Good Tidings Approach, Taiping Prefecture’s Little Singer Yang Shu Plays the Qin and Brings Wine.

And again, from Records of a Horsetail Wisk, we learn that Li Zhiyi, childless and widowed, remarried Yang Shu and brought her home. He was in his late fifties, probably nearing his sixties by this point, and she was his junior by many decades. Miraculously, they had a child together. But it was also this union that was the soft target for trouble to be brought upon them some ten years later - Guo Xiangzheng (郭祥正) who was an enemy of Li Zhiyi had someone accuse their family of falsifying the parentage of this child, such that he could be conferred privileges. (And I assume this is because Li Zhiyi is technically still a court official? If it was something else, I’m unable to track it down…) For the second or third time - I’ve lost count - Li Zhiyi’s name was struck from the court’s records and Yang Shu was sentenced to caning. 

We have a poem from the delighted Guo Xiangzheng to learn of the aftermath:

七十馀岁老朝郎 | Seventy and more, the old court official, 曾向元祐说文章 | in Yuanyou era, essays he did compose. 如今白首归田后 | Now white-haired and retired, 却与杨姝洗杖疮 | instead, he washes Yang Shu’s cane welts.

Yes, we know they were wronged because Li Zhiyi’s nephew and student eventually helped overturn the case and reveal the truth. The text says ‘wife and child were returned to him’, so I imagine they were either jailed for the ‘fraud’ or returned to Yang Shu’s original class and separated from Li Zhiyi. Again, his official status was restored to him and in addition, the post of Grand Master for Court Discussion, but he declined this in favour of his retirement life. 

After so much reading, I am still not able to pinpoint a year in which卜算子·我住长江头 was written. Only a general time period of ‘much later in life’ and possibly after having met Yang Shu simply from its place in his Collected Works of Guxi Hermit, Chapter 45. What seems to be certain though, is that it is written for her, and I am glad to hear however indirectly that these feelings were sincere. 

Only in the fiercest fire, do you know what’s real gold and all that… 

POEM

I would never have guessed that these words were from an old man, because they’re so bright, the emotions so fiery and all the more so for their simplicity.

There is drama in that hyperbole of distance. The Long River is 6300 km long. But how unreachable and impossible is the distance between them, is also how they are connected. Like how we might look up at the sky when a loved one is far away and take comfort in the fact that that they are under the same sky, or looking up at the same moon. Feelings are ‘entrusted’ to a moon, the stars, a river. 

I feel like making or forcing this connection figuratively or via physical action of drinking the water from the same river, is absurdly childish yet charming. ‘思君不见君’ Thinking of you but not seeing you is a common lament, and then… here’s something that’s (not) going to make you feel better! 

How Not Better are we? 

Well... how likely is the Long River to cease its flow? 

The resentment springs infinitely like water from the river’s source, what is the source of the resentment though - that’s love. Hence, this love will stop when the roaring river stops: never. 

And the thing to remember, at least from how I read this poem, is that it’s one sided. ‘只愿君心似我心’ I only wish that your heart is as mine. He doesn’t know, but he knows. The second part of this line is not a condition but a promise, a statement of fact emphasized beautifully in that 定 ‘for sure’.

The roar of a dragon echoes and I look ‘up’ desperate to find a rescuer. Caraxes flies just above me and I yell for Daemon. The dragon ignores me, and instead I get a glimpse of the limp and bleeding body in its claws. Sightless lilac eyes, white gold hair that shone with sticky red blood and features I had seen in Laena.

Aemon Targaryen’s corpse gurgled and burst into blazing red sparks that made my body feel like hot fire had landed as I was pelted with it as much as the sea below me was. I reach out hopelessly, and I hit the sea with an all mighty crash.

I shoot up in bed, my hair in disarray and heart pounding like I had just won a marathon. My stomach cramps uncomfortably, and I throw off my sheets.

As expected the bed is stained with blood.

when i was younger, i would listen to debut and fearless on repeat (religiously) on my walkman and headphones and i’ve been looking for any pictures of them and i finally found some 😊

Debut: I still remember listening to Teardrops On My Guitar on my walkman, acting like I had just gone through the worst heartbreak of my life at 7 years old (Disclaimer: I definitely had not gone through my worst heartbreak then). I remember the giddy I felt when I said my first cuss word in the original TOMG (‘Cause it’s so damn funny), and how I would scream along to Picture To Burn, even though I didn’t know a single person who drove a pick-up truck.

Fearless: I remember crying to Fifteen on my 15th birthday, and the feeling of uncertainty of starting high school as a freshman. I remember watching the You Belong With Me music video on youtube all the time. I remember seeing Taylor preform Fearless on the Country Music Channel on T.V, and every time she would do to the heart hands, I would be putting my hands up in the heart hand 🫶

Speak Now: I remember crying to Never Grow Up on my 16th birthday. I remember the anxiety and fear I felt of growing up, and having taylor’s music to sing along with and feeling every single lyric helped to relieve that anxiety. I remember begging my mom to take me to the Speak Now Tour when Taylor was at Soldier Field, and circling the calendar date for when she would be there (We didn’t go 🥲). I remember not fully understanding the meaning of Dear John, only for future me to finally deeply understand and relate to that song.

Red: I remember screaming along to 22 in the car wherever we would go, which inspired me to start dressing up like a hipster (it was….a look 😁..!). I remember the feeling of when the CD stopped working, so I saved up and did extra chores so I could buy myself a new cd as a kid.

1989: I remember loving the music video to Shake It Off, and how I would listen to that song every single time I was upset. I remember watching the Bad Blood music video, and how excited I got when I saw Zendaya’s cameo. I remember istening to Welcome To New York the first time I visited NYC. I am so in love with the vault tracks from this album, and i’ve had Say Don’t Go on repeat for the past few days and nights.

Reputation: Oh my…..this was a fun time. I remember the day that Taylor had disappeared from the public eye. How angry I was with two individuals. I remember being in the trenches proudly, defending taylor and her reputation. I remember how mad I was that two people could do that to someone so undeserving of what happened to them. I remember the first time i heard LWWYMD, and that being my absolute girl boss song for the next few weeks. I believe I was 14 at the time and how badly I wanted to go to the reputation tour at the time, but again, nobody I knew closely would take me there or go with me. I remember the absolute joy I felt with her return and her reclaiming her reputation.

Lover: I remember how much I loved (and still love) ME! I remember walking down the hallways in school with my earbuds in and the most stone-cold look on my face. When my friend asked what I was listening to, thinking I was listening to heavy metal or something, and when I told them it was ME! they were shocked.

Folklore: I remember how I would lay awake at night, listening to exile and cardigan on repeat. I was going through a bad relationship at this time, so these songs hit close to home. I remember when I heard Mad Woman, and my jaw dropped at the call-outs. I remember when Taylor performed Exile at the eras tour, how my heart stopped and how i refuse to interact with those who heard it live (haha, jk…unless…)

Evermore: I remember connecting the dots to Coney Island, realizing that the bridge was a reference to the eras I had grown up with. This song will forever hold a special place in my heart. I remember how I would try to learn how to braid my hair (i failed)

Midnights: I remember listening to You’re On Your Own Kid at midnight on the release date. I remember how I began to cry listening to this song. I remember fighting the great ticketmaster war, and how devastated I was that I was waitlisted after listening to her music for so long. The first tour I would be able to take myself too, Ticketmaster had crushed that hope. However, my mom was able to pull a miracle and found me a ticket for Chicago N3, and how i began to cry in disbelief that she found one. I remember walking to the stadium, my heart beating faster and faster as I approached the stadium. I remember how it felt like I had entered a whole new world when I stepped onto the stadium and saw the stage. I remember bursting out into tears when Taylor took the stage. How I face-timed my family so I could share the moment with them. I’ll never forget the lover microphone and the evermore bug incidents. I remember how taylor performed Hits Different, and how I screamed along to the song, as this one hits close too. I remember crying to Bigger Than The Whole Sky. I lost my brother in May of last year, and when BTTWS came out, it hit hard, along with Forever Winter. Out of all of the years of being a swiftie, i think this is by far my favorite era. I cannot wait for Indy N1, where my friends and my mom and I will be front and center stage section h 💙💜.

Third Man Records Releasing 20th Anniversary Vault Package #55 Of The White Stripes Elephant XX

Third Man Records is releasing Vault Package #55 The White Stripes - Elephant XX which is the 20th anniversary expanded edition of their 2003 album.  There is a MONO remix of the album on white and red vinyl, a 7-inch red glitter of Jack White's "Hypnotize" demos, a DVD of never-seen footage and a 28-page booklet of unpublished photographs. The package is available through Third Man's Vault Subscription and the cutoff to sign up for #55 is January 31st at midnight CST. Jack White and Bill Skibble mixed the album from the original multitrack tapes and discovered forgotten bits of the music like four extra bars at the end of "Seven Nation Army."  

White's demo for "Hypnotize" is included with two mixes. He gave the song to local Detroit garage band The Hentchmen in 1998 but they never used it. A few years later The White Stripes made their recording of the song and it became one of the most favored in their catalog. The DVD has footage of them performing The Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog" in Japan, an unseen interview with Jack and Meg and more. The Ledge #617: Record Store Day

I know the event has plenty of naysayers, but I absolutely love Record Store Day. I love the ritual of standing in line with other record nerds of all ages, and discussing exactly what treats we're looking for. Even standing in line to pay, a task I generally dread at any retailer, is full of great chats.

And then there's the actual music. As somebody who loves vault material - demos, outtakes, live recordings, early mixes, etc. - it's a day of treasures. There's also a ton of records you never expected to see reissued, and there is always a number of 60s garage rock compilations.

For fans of boybands, 80s and 90s Pop, The 1975, Charlie Burg, Justin Bieber, and 4*TOWN

Casually tapping through Instagram stories, I stumble upon this gem because of musicians Andrew Pham and Samuel Victoria. I look further at the credits and I am glad to see that Cameron Thistle is part of this ensemble as well! I did not go to Youtube and watch it right away because I wanted to save it for later when I could give it my full attention, which would naturally be at 3 in the morning for me. With my roommates asleep, I could not scream at the top of my lungs, for I just discovered my newest obsession. 

The film starts with the camera wandering around the house, collecting the duo Alex Perdomo and Kevin Moody, to the accompaniment of beautiful synths, keys, saxophone, and light drums. As the words say on screen, a genius idea does take shape and the notes of the saxophone perfectly emulates that feeling. Ever so nonchalantly, the duo finally wanders into the living room and everything just comes alive with the full band. The drums kick it off and the upbeat guitar and groovy bass just made me want to jump and dance! The sounds of the synths, guitar, and the saxophone especially take me back to when I saw The 1975 (At Their Very Best Tour) in 2022. They have the same essence! I need to see Girlish perform live immediately!

Girlish performs four songs and all the melodies are so catchy, I don’t know why they did not put the song titles in the description earlier because I was ready to stream right away. However, I gladly scavenged through their catalog to find them. The setlist is “2 LUV ME,” “RUNAROUND,” “Overstep,” and “MISS UNDERSTOOD.” I was pleased to find in the comment section that they might be releasing the live versions of these songs on DSPs because I enjoy and prefer the live band sound and carefree and playful vocals that this environment produced, over how the released singles sound! 

I think this film was shot, mixed, and colored so beautifully and with much heart. To me, it’s very reminiscent of Dijon’s live sessions for Absolutely. The musicians are highlighted doing their thing, enjoying their craft, rocking with it, and you could tell that everyone involved was just having a great time. I wonder how much they practiced and choreographed everything from the dancing, lighting, to camera work. I saw somewhere that this was filmed in December of last year! Can’t believe that they just had this in the vault like that.

Miscellaneous thoughts:

A few weeks ago, there was this Tiktok I saw where this person was talking about the revival of the pop boyband genre and I am gladly hopping on that train. I love listening to fun music. 

They would be the perfect opener for Charlie Burg, someone who also writes really strong melodies and is just really good live. They are all just groovy guys and I think they would really get along. 

I’m also just confused as to why they don't have that many followers and monthly listeners yet!

The bits of bass and percussion throughout are the best omg.

The jumping around is very Justin Bieber in the best way.

The space this was filmed in is super cool!

(02/22/24) - Just saw that they are submitting for the NPR Tiny Desk Contest and I was literally thinking about that when I watched it for the first time. I hope they win! W00000

Wow. I just had the best dream of my entire life.

So I was Blair Waldorf and my best friend was Serena. I was in charge of my god mothers house while she was modeling over seas. Her house breathtaking, classy and still had her aesthetic from when I was growing up. Only she was right on the water....... Prettier than bora bora

She gave me her favorite birkins and a ton of her fav vintage designers. Shoes. Earrings. And handbags. And then she made me a pasta dish with truffles in like 2 minutes. There was so so much more but that was the best dream I have ever had in my entire life and my heart is full.

We talked and talked and talked and talked and talked and talked and talked. Those conversations are living in my head rent free now as a new coping mechanism to when I am in the dark abyss. That was the best dream of my entire life. Also her hair was super long and chestnut. Yes
