Since I am in the midst of wedding planning, would love to hear what you guys think each of the EXO boys' wedding would turn out like (assuming their partners give them total control 😂)! But also an important lesson I learned: social distancing doesn't stop people from reaching out virtually to you so me time became so much more essential these days!!

minseok ✧ i feel like he’s a great middle ground. he’ll keep you sane and handle the stuff that you don’t have time for, he’ll give valid and real comments, but won’t be controlling. it’s very much a team effort. unless you want like a candy bar or something bc “darling, that’s a little out there.” and you’re like minseok, have some FUN. live your best LIFE. but it’s ok bc he’ll get you everything you want as a surprise and you’ll cry like “omg” and he’ll just PREEN bc YES he IS the greatest husband 😌

luhan ✧ im sorry you’re giving HIM control? u want him to go into CARDIAC ARREST??? if you want your wedding to take place in a shack with 6 people attending, then sure, by all means, give lu control. but if not, please for the love of GOD do not ask him. he’ll put in comments every now and then (for cake flavors definitely or like. his tie color or some shit like that) but if you ask him to pick between maroon and rhubarb he’ll ERROR 404: LUHAN IS NOT RESPONDING. and just stand there like a mannuquein 😳😳😳

yifan ✧ oh christ don’t do that to him, he can only handle so much LOL. he’ll defintiely tag along for everything bc he’s clingy and he wants to see the dress/tux/whatever you pick and you’re like “it’s a surprISE YIFAN” but he does Not Care. but he doesn’t know the difference between silk or satin so he’s basically no help KAMFKSFJKE. he does pull up with the hella gaudy shit tho and you’re like “yifan you cannot have GOLD CHAINS as part of your outfit” and he’s like “but babe,, the swag” 😎

junmyeon ✧ ok myeon is the MVP. he’s like Peak Husband Material. he’s picky but sweet – makes sure you get what you want but isn’t a groomzilla u feel? like he’ll send that sickly sweet smile to the dress/tux assistant and be like “my love asked for the WHITE piece, not the IVORY, thank you :)” and they’re like “o-of course mr. kim!!” and you’re like “omg junmymeoN PLS.” but everyone loves him bc he tips well and is geniunely kind when he isn’t standing up for you LMAO 😂

yixing ✧ ok definitely another good balance one. he’ll let you know who he wants invited, what kinda traditional things are a Must Have, etc. but he’s SO SUPPORTIVE of what you want. like you can geniunely pick ANYTHING as long as he gets his like,, two small requirements. you could walk out in a trash bag and be like “i want this” and he’d tear up like “anything you want, baobei” and drop $4k to get a gucci plastic bag. deadass. and god he CRIES at the wedding bc you do SO well and keep his wishes in mind and WOW he loves u 😭

baekhyun ✧ ok he wouldn’t do a HORRIBLE job if you gave him all the control -- who am i kidding. your wedding would end up looking like a frat party. however, he do got POPPIN ideas. he will be zero help for the vital shit, but if you want some crazy shit, he’s the man. he’ll be like “ok babe don’t be mad -- i forgot to book the venue BUT i found a tiny dog tux for Mongryong so he can be our ring bearer what do you think!!” and for a moment you consider what it would be like to live in widowhood ☠️

jongdae ✧ the PICKIEST motherfucker. ik i mentioned that in the drabble i wrote you, but like i am SERIOUS. you will go to like twelve bakeries before he finally settles on some BASIC ASS FLAVOR like vanilla and you’re like “i might murder you.” but he makes sure you’re picky too so you get EXACTLY what you want and the day of, when everything is set you’re like Hol Up. this do be poppin. it’s everything you dreamed of and you DO be having to thank jongdae for his brattiness after all 😪

chanyeol ✧ honestly bold of us to assume he’d have any role in the planning bc he’s too busy teasing you over how seriously you take it all. to keep you from going crazy tho, he pulls a few pranks and you’re 🤏🏼 this close to calling off the wedding when he makes you think the decorations came in the wrong color or some shit. but on the acutal wedding day, he surprises you with a new song/dance and you realize he’s actually been taking care of something very important this whole time too ❤️

kyungsoo ✧ god you have chosen the BEST man to plan with. he’s so patient and attends EVERY appointment with you. he takes SUCH good care of you and makes sure you’re never stressed or piling too much on your plate. just a total gentleman. he’d book you a huge bridal/groom suite for the night before the wedding with white roses and all this cheesy shit and he would NEVER LIVE IT DOWN. and then when you think he can’t get any better he surpries you with a secret honeymoon trip and you’re like “god is real huh” 🙏🏼

zitao ✧ hahaha you think you GIVE him permission and he doesn’t just TAKE it? hahaha. that’s a GOOD one. prepare for the most extra reception and ceremony you have EVER seen. but don’t worry, you and tao will be the only ones who have any opinion on the planning. your friend will be like “what if you guys-” and tao’s like “did someone say something.” so by all means, tell him everything you want, bc he WILL get it for you. and on the special day he cries like a baby and you’re like AW bc u think he’s being all lovey-dovey but he’s just like “wow i did SO good” 😢

jongin ✧ wedding? did you mean an excuse for a huge party? do not, and i can not stress this enough, do NOT give him all the control. the second you do, he’s inviting every friend and family member to come help him bc he has NO CLUE what he’s doing. but it’s ok you keep them all in check and you’ll get what you want bc your manz is whipped. and when you and your wedding party get stressed, he just hands you $15k and is like “go on a shopping trip babey ily” and you’re like “maybe you’re not THAT bad, kim” 🤑🤑🤑

sehun ✧ he INSISTS on being included in every MINISCULE step. i mean EVERYTHING. and so you’re like “fine baby, what do you want?” and his mind goes blank. he truly has no opinion. no help whatsoever. you’re like “cream or ivory?” and he’s like “what’s that.” so he ends up flaking and you plan most of it – thankfully !! but when you walk down the aisle he SOBS and you’re like “ok fine you’re redeemed” 🥰

Just been replaying DW7 and got to say in the shu story they completely gloss over Liu Bei's time in Xu province only having rescuing Tao Qian and Xia pi what battles could be used to expand this part of the shu story and make early Shu interesting?

First let’s talk about how Liu Bei even ended up there because that’s largely glossed over too.

Liu Bei was serving under Gongsun Zan. While at war with Yuan Shao, Gongsun Zan sent his commander Tian Kai to take control of Qing province. Yuan Shao sent Yuan Tan. Liu Bei was sent as one of Tian Kai’s commanders. They initially did well, taking the city of Pingyuan, but Yuan Tan eventually drove them out and pushed them east, until they were next to Beihan canton, under Kong Rong. Unwilling to align himself with either Gongsun or Yuan, Kong Rong instead fell under Tao Qian’s hegemony, with Beihai effectively functioning as a satellite of Xu province. When Kong Rong was attacked by the Turban Remnanats of Qing, Taishi Ci sought help from Liu Bei, who was the nearest commander. Liu Bei rescued Kong Rong, earning his friendship. Shortly after this, Cao Cao invaded Xu for a second time and Tao Qian called for aid from his ally Gongsun Zan. Liu Bei answered that call. Although he accomplished nothing against Cao Cao, Tao Qian still offered to make him inspector of Yu province and give him more soldiers, so Liu Bei defected to serve under Tao Qian. Tao Qian didn’t really control much more than the state of Pei in Yu, so Liu Bei set his quarters at it’s capital city Pei, often called Xiaopei (little Pei) to avoid confusion with the canton of the same name.

Not long after this, Tao Qian died. Liu Bei had courted the influence of powerful locals like the Mi clan (Mi Zhu, Mi Fang, etc.) and had Kong Rong’s support as well. With their influence he was able to secure succession from Tao Qian as Xu’s new governor. It was right about this time that Lu Bu fled to Xu after being driven out of Yan by Cao Cao. Since Cao Cao was a mutual enemy to both, Liu Bei welcomed Lu Bu and set him up blocking the road between Xu and Yan to intercept any attacks from Cao Cao.

Around the beginning of the next year (196), Yuan Shu invaded Xu province. Although he’d been allied with Tao Qian he evidently did not feel that this bond transferred to Liu Bei, and he’d claimed the province as his personal domain some time before. Liu Bei led his army into Guangling to meet Yuan Shu and the two engaged in indecisive fighting in the south of the canton. Zhang Fei was left in charge at Liu Bei’s headquarters in Xiapi, but he badly mismanaged matters and the city turned against him. Yuan Shu offered Lu Bu wealth and power to defect, so Lu Bu attacked Xiapi. The incensed locals opened the gates for him and he took the city with ease.

Liu Bei turned around and left Guangling, hoping to retake Xiapi. But he was pushed back by Lu Bu and his army mostly disintegrated. With the wealth of the Mi clan (who became his in-laws at this time), he was able to regroup somewhat. Caught between the two enemies, he decided to make peace with Lu Bu. Because Yuan Shu didn’t come through on his promises (and tried to have Lu Bu murdered), Lu Bu was now at odds with him so he accepted peace with Liu Bei and allowed him to return to Xiapei.

This area was now a sort of Circle of Treachery, with three warlords who knew better than to trust each other. Yuan Shu decided to attack Liu Bei but Lu Bu came to his aid, afraid to let Yuan Shu tip the balance in his favor. He convinced Yuan Shu’s commander to retreat, and this is where the famous “I can shoot my halberd from real far away you guys” story comes from. The three of them continued to have a difficult relationship, with Lu Bu skirmishing against both parties though to no decisive end. After some fighting, Lu Bu and Yuan Shu reached another alliance, with Lu Bu seemingly the only person willing to stick by him after the whole Zhong Emperor thing.

Eventually, Lu Bu became concerned that Liu Bei was growing too strong and would not remain subordinate much longer, so he sent Gao Shun and Zhang Liao to attack him. Cao Cao (hoping to destroy Lu Bu) sent Xiahou Dun to help defend Pei, but he and Liu Bei were quickly defeated and forced to flee. Cao Cao then gathered his army and advanced east. With the aid of an officer named Chen Deng (who gathered armies in Xu and then defected to Cao Cao) and some arguable tactical mistakes by Lu Bu, Cao Cao was able to steamroll across Yu and Xu until he reached Xiapi. There he laid siege to the city until Lu Bu surrendered and was executed. Although Yuan Shu intended to send reinforcements, he was too slow to respond and they did not arrive.

Cao Cao then agreed to let Liu Bei remain Inspector of Yu, now with command of most of the province. The next year (199) he was ordered to attack Yuan Shu with Zhu Ling. But Yuan Shu died while they were on the road, so Liu Bei revolted against Cao Cao, hoping to retake Xu for himself. He sent Guan Yu to Xiapi while he personally remained at Xiaopei. Liu Bei was able to fend off the first army Cao Cao sent against him, but when Cao Cao advanced personally in 200, Liu Bei was quickly defeated and fled, abandoning his family (again). Guan Yu was quickly defeated at Xiapi and surrendered. Liu Bei joined up with his old enemy Yuan Shao and was eventually sent to wage gruella war against Cao Cao from Runan, the home of the Yuan family. He had some success but in 201 was forced to flee to Jing, where he took up service under Liu Biao.

And so on, and so on.

King’s Avatar is amazing

SO if you’ve followed along with my screaming for the past couple days first, thanks that must’ve been really annoying, second, I’ve decided to condense and organize my thoughts on The King’s Avatar because I realized about half way that I’ve been thinking of everyone in terms of dogs and screaming so....

FIRST story, A+ amazing incredible. Found family out the wazoo with a solid and surprisingly believable esports plot. Like I was seriously impressed by the amount of detail put into the game itself and not just in terms of the cgi, cool down times, icons, hp bars, there are so many little details on the set of the game I’m blown away by that alone. The plot is solid with some really great pacing. Even when nothing is technically happening progress is always being made at least on a character level. Everything always felt super grounded. Like apart from the ridiculously large buildings for esports training nothing felt insanely implausible. Ye Xiu was strong but not OP ridiculous you are already dead strong which just made everything even better because I could definitely see something like this happening is Overwatch or League.

SECOND music and cinematography. My god was this amazing!!! There’s this really specific track that plays during battles and that I just can’t fucking get enough of! Everything is integrated so well and the shots are just so fucking nice to look at!! They also fully took advantage of the cgi to create some really great shots in game while still making it feel like a video game. 10/10

THIRD AND THE BEST PART characters. The characters are the heart and SOUL of this series and my god are they done well. Everyone and I mean EVERYONE is given some sort of empathetic pull. Everyone feels so real and human. There’s no weird unnecessary hatred between the top players it’s all mutual respect and friendship. People who have known each other for years FEEL LIKE THEYVE KNOWN EACHOTHER FOR YEARS!!! There empathy and sympathy and everyone makes choices for a reason and those reasons are always so grounded you can believe every single one of them.

Earlier I said I’d ended up think of the characters as dogs because I just kept going “he’s like a puppy!” Every time someone new was introduced. With a few NOTABLE exceptions, behold the dogs of King’s avatar.

Ye Xiu: scheming puppy useless outside of video games

Qiao Yifan: PUPPY BABY BEST BOY!!!

Tang Ruo: sulky puppy who thinks it’s bigger than it is but is still pretty big. Definitely a lesbian

Chen Guo: an excitable puppy who can’t always remember what to do but goddamn is she willing to try. Tang Ruo’s girlfriend

Bao Zi: not a single brain cell in sight. The dumbest dog you’ve ever seen, the kind that runs into walls because he can’t figure out how to stop when chasing a ball

Luo Ji: the smartest puppy. Math puppy who is the softest lil bean. Needs love always.

Wei Chen: old dog that barks way to loud but knows how to play super well, even if he does need to take super long naps afterwards

An Wenyi: a puppy who just needs love to turn into a pile of happy goo. Occasionally lashes out but always comes back looking for friends.

Wu Chen: a good boy even if he does occasionally break stuff. Always ready to be a good boy, a helpful boy, soft dad dog

Mo Fan: a cat who wandered into a house of dogs

Haung Shaotian: yippy loud barking puppy whom a love with my whole ENTIRE HEART AND SOUL

Yu Wenzhou: scary smiling boy

Han Wenqing: big scary boy

Zhang Xinjie: schemey boy who is not afraid of the big scary boy

Su Mucheng: the smartest, prettiest girl

Chen Yehui: rat bastard boy

Tao Xuan: rat bastard man

Sun Xiang: chihuahua who barks a lot and thinks it’s a big dog. Toll angry who experiences SO MUCH GROWTH

Qiu Fei: a puppy who keeps tripping on his own two feet as he runs to be a vicious attack dog. Smoll angry who accidentally befriended a toll angry and doesn’t know what to do with it

Qiao Shiqin: a respectful schemey boy who somehow adopted a toll angry boy and is a proud dad of his growth

Blue river: dumb baby who keeps getting lead in circles

Gao Yingjie: definitely in love with Yifan

Wang Jiexie: not a bastard as originally thought

Little moon moon: the og fan whom we must support otherwise the dumb dog would fall down the stairs in an attempt to bark at the door

Ye Qiu: gullible boy who just wants his id back and for his brother to let their parents bother HIM for a change.

I know I’m probably forgetting people but these are the big ones. I could scream about them individually and maybe I will but not here.

Tl:dr Kong’s Avatar is an amazing show and @weilongfu should expect my letter from courts for compensation for emotional damage soon.

A/N: um i’m back maybe??? i hate this chapter same with the rest.

It had been a month since the death of Chen, the funeral was 2 weeks ago and it was hard. Even though you were new to the gang, you felt a certain bond to all of the men. Not to mention you’ve slept with a fair bunch of them, all consensual of course.

Suho and Kris were determined it was BigBang’s crew who hired that girl to attack you and Chen and then kill herself. Kris sent Kai, Chanyeol and Luhan to go keep an eye on some of the memebers from Bigbang.

BB was known for human trafficking, they were known for buying women and forcing them to do anything they wanted. Xuimin was facing the worst of it, the loss of his best friend resorted him into losing all hope in humanity. He barely ate, he barely came out of his room. He was a mess.

Baekhyun and Tao we’re constantly trying to help Xuimin in anyway they could. Whether that be helping him shower or bringing him food, taking him out of the house just to get some sunlight.

Kyungsoo was upping up the security around the house and Lay was helping you learn some basic stitches. After that night in the hotel room, you asked him to teach you how to control bleeding and how to stitch yourself. Hopefully you’ll never need it. But in this world, that’s unlikely.

You and Sehun were cooking for the boys when you heard a gunshot from the front of the house and then Chanyeol came running in the house coming to get you, saying they were able to grab a BB member and bring him here.

Following him out of the house, you walked down a cellar, there were multiple different types of cages, the man they brought in didn’t look familiar at all, however, his eyes, it was like he was begging you. He was tied to a chair, his arms behind his back and feet tied to the legs of the chair, there was a gun shot wound in his leg. That must have been what it was.

“Do you recognize him?” Luhan asked you directing to the man. You didn’t even get a word out before Suho and Kyungsoo came rushing down the cellar stairs pushing you away from the mans eye view.

Kyungsoo was yelling at Chanyeol saying he shouldn’t have brought you down here. Which lead to Suho calling Kris and Lay to come down here as well, quickly you were being pushed into a corner away from the man tied to a chair.

“What the fuck is going on?” You asked. “Who the hell is this and why is everyone upset about me being here?” You demanded, trying to seem tough was hard since lately everyone’s been treating you differently.

“Hyuna, this man, he’s known for human sex trafficking, he’s a member of BigBang and he preys on Women just like yourself, do have you ever seen him before?” Chanyeol brought up since no one else was talking. Everyone was just breathing loudly and glaring at the man tied to the chair.

“I haven’t seen him before, I’ve only seen two of members faces,” you convinced them. Which made the man chuckle slightly.

That angered Suho, he went over to a table you didn’t even notice at the other side of the wall and grabbed a knife. He struck it directly in the mans other leg, causing him to let out a loud yell and hiss. “I dare you to make one more fucking sound that doesn’t come from a question.”

Leaving the knife in, he Suho asked if they searched him and then when they said they did he asked to see his stuff. Kai handed him his wallet and a pack of cigarettes and a phone that the man had on his person.

The phone was dead, which was also a good sign so that no one could track a dead phone, he dropped it onto the concrete floor where it got smashed before kicking it over to the wall. Opening the wallet looking for anything they could use, his face hardened when he seen something.

“What the fuck is this?!” He demanded, grabbing whatever it was and shoving it in the mans face, it was a small pocket sized photo. You couldn’t see what was on it but the men standing behind Suho definitely did and they shared the same mutual anger.

The man looked at the picture, then to you, and then back to Suho. No words. Kris grabbed the picture and then turned and pushed the knife further into his leg, “you were asked a fucking question.” He yelled in his face.

The tied man made a grotesque face before yelling and begging. Weak. “I don’t know how that picture got in there,” He told them.

Which made Kris shove the knife in more, “Bullshit, you’re telling me this photo just appeared in your wallet?” He yelled at him.

“What fucking picture” chanyeol lightly whispered over to me which i just shrugged my shoulders since I couldn’t see it.

Suho heard and handed us the picture. I almost wanted to puke, it was a photo of me. Me tied to a chair, just like he is right now. But there were cuts along my collar bones, my clothes was basically ripped off my body. I was completely disgusted. I couldn’t even bare to look at the photo.

You felt a feeling of anger, and sadness, Lay came over to your other side and gave you a comforting look. “Would you like to head back inside?” he asked you. You shook your head no. You wanted to see this bastard get tortured.

Hours passed by, the sound of yelling and cries but the man was not saying anything. Something sparked in your mind. “Can I try something?” You asked Kyungsoo who was currently interrogating him. He looked at your causiously before nodding, the other men in the room; Sehun who joined, Chanyeol and Luhan stayed behind.

You walked over to the table where his other belongings were, grabbing a his pack of cigarettes, you opened it finding his lighter and grabbed one of the 5 smokes left. “Need a hit?” You turned to him. Putting the smoke in your mouth before lighting it. This caused his eyes to light up. Addict.

The taste of cigarettes in your mouth made you feel gross but you had a plan. You let him take a drag of the cigarette. “What’s your name?” you asked him, which was a small but simple question which would kill him. That is, if the torture doesn’t.

“Don’t act stupid you bitch,” he cussed at you. Spitting at your feet. You turned to the guys at the wall before looking back to the man. Taking the cigarette and putting it out on his neck.

“Wrong answer,” he screamed which made you make a sly smile before grabbing his wallet, looking at his ID. “Seungri.”

Avec Nocturne Epilogue Pt. 1

Plot: We work at the same club and share a lot in common. Because we got off on the wrong foot, I’ve been trying to make it up to you. While walking you to the subway station, I see you hugging another guy. We’re just co-workers but it kind of bothers me. Why is that?

Ch. 7 | Epilogue Part 2 NSFW

“How’d it go with that VIP experience?” Chanyeol asked as Kit heaved her messenger bag onto her shoulder.

Kit scrunched her nose up and made an amused face as she pointed to the doorway. Chanyeol took the hint and both headed outside of the club, walking a few steps away before talking again.

“Honestly kind of awkward,” Kit admitted as she wrapped her fingers around her bag. “Granted, I was outside the door spinning for Luhan and his lady friend but I felt really weird having to listen to them. Girl’s a loud moaner and I almost thought they were going to break something in there. Not sure I’ll ever get used to that.”

Chanyeol smirked as he nudged her playfully. “Aw noona’s all shy.”

“Please, I don’t give a damn about people having sex but I don’t wanna be present in a way,” she defended. “Too many bad memories of inconsiderate roommates hooking up in our shared room without giving me a heads up. Very awkward for everyone.”

“It happened a lot?”

“College man,” she sighed rolling her eyes. “God I don’t miss that! Classes were fine, professors were decent, but the dorm experience – hell no.” She crossed her arms over her chest and shook her head. “Listen you don’t have to keep walking me to the station.”

Chanyeol shrugged as he stuck his hands into his pockets. “Well it’s late and I’d feel better knowing you got on safely. Trust me, okay?”

“I appreciate it, but I’m good – my brother had me learn self defense and he insisted I sport steel-toed Docs. No one wants to mess with me if I mention them,” Kit replied with a smirk. She dug around for her subway pass and checked her watch as she approached the station. “Well it should be here any minute. Thanks again.”

Chanyeol nodded and allowed a smile to cross his lips. He watched as the train breezed into the station, stopping before Kit. The doors slid open and Kit stepped through them, glancing over her shoulder at him. She raised a hand while gripping a nearby rail for support, nodding at Chanyeol with a smile.

“Wait!” a male voice yelled.

Chanyeol blinked as a tall young man zipped past him at neck-breaking speed, barely making it through the doors before they closed.

The guy hunched over, clutching his side and Kit tore her gaze from her co-worker to focus on the young man who just entered. The young man straightened up, one hand shakily pushing his dark framed glasses up on his nose. The eyes behind them trailed up to hers and blinked.

“Kit? Kit Adler?” the guy murmured as he gripped the rail near hers.

“Nam?” she asked, staring back in disbelief.

The male smiled widely as he wrapped her in a tight hug, almost losing his balance as the subway lurched forward.

“Careful Captain Chaos,” she joked as she hugged him back, trying to keep both of them steady.

Chanyeol froze as he caught the brief exchange before the subway zoomed out of the station. What just happened? Who was that guy?

“You’re finally on my home turf! Oh man I can’t believe it’s you!” Namjoon blurted out as they exited the subway. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I had to get a new phone for this trip and it didn’t save my old contacts list on my SIM,” Kit admitted as she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “How’s the work on your masters going?”

“Awesome. Well, it’s fucking stressful and I’m this close to tearing my hair out, but yeah I love it! The professors have been dope and I’m actually gonna graduate early!” Namjoon crowed, eyes shining. “You studying abroad or working?”

“Uh kinda working,” Kit replied as she jogged up the steps. “My brother’s friend is doing his service and needed a temporary tenant so he said I ought to do some family hunting too while I’m here. Didn’t find much though – just the nurse who delivered me and a basic description of what happened that day. Work-wise, I’m doing DJ-ing at a club.”

“Oh? Which club?” Namjoon asked as he hoisted his backpack higher on his shoulders.

Kit bit her lip as she sucked in a deep breath. “Er...it’s called EXO? I swear I’m just mixing tracks – nothing’s coming off!”

“Was gonna say,” Namjoon replied with an amused look. “But they actually hire women there? I thought that was kind of a ladies club.”

“Um...I’m the only girl on staff,” she replied with a wince. “They didn’t have a backup DJ so I got hired temporarily then permanently after a weekend shift. I switch off with their main one every other day. It’s...interesting. Um the group’s decent but the customers are crazy – they pay well so it’s something.”

Namjoon nodded as he pressed the crosswalk button, crossing his arms over his chest. He was silent for a few moments and turned to face Kit with a thoughtful look.

“Hey, is that the place where some guy named Kai dances?” he asked.

“You know him?”

“Uh not me, but I have a friend who won’t shut up about him,” Namjoon replied with a shake of his head. “He talked about going to watch Kai but none of our mutual friends wanna go to the club. But now that you’ve mentioned that you work there, maybe I’ll have to volunteer myself as his wingman so I can see you in action.”

“You don’t have to,” Kit said, shrugging her shoulders.

“Hey, I wanna support you,” he said, looking her in the eye. “What days do you work?”

Kit chewed on her bottom lip as she tried to recall her schedule off the top of her head. “Tomorrow and Friday I’m in the booth. Saturday I’m on standby for a private VIP spinning session. Sunday I’m probably handling another VIP or off – need to double check that.”

The crosswalk changed and Namjoon pointed to the opposite side as he walked across, Kit following behind a few steps.

“I’ll check with my friend but I’m thinking it’s gonna be Friday. My last final is tomorrow but not sure about his schedule,” Namjoon replied.

“Noona I missed you!” Sehun whined when Kit passed the bar. He put his dishcloth down and walked over to hug her.

“I was gone for two days,” she laughed as she hugged him back. “A day off and then awkwardly playing musical third wheel to Luhan. I’m sure Chan took fine care of the music here while I was away.”

“Chanyeol-ah did fine but Tao was Tao – he took two nice ladies away from the bar when I was chatting with them,” he complained. “One of them said she wanted to buy another drink from me if I gave her a kiss and then Tao came up and whispered in her ear. She left without buying another drink!”

“Sehunnie, there are other women out there,” Kit sighed as she patted his shoulder. “As for Tao, what else is new? He’ll probably avoid us knowing I’m here for two days then probably handling VIP again.” She checked her watch before excusing herself to set up for tonight’s session.

“Oh um hello gentlemen, how can I help you tonight?” Chen asked as the pair walked up to the desk.

The younger boy fished out his ID and allowed a cheeky grin to cross his lips. “I’m here to watch Kai dance – he is here tonight, right?”

“Oh um yes! Yes he is,” Chen replied as he cross-checked the young man’s ID. He glanced over at Namjoon who produced his, passing it over to Chen.

The taller boy shot Chen a sheepish grin as he pointed to the younger boy. “I’m his wingman tonight. Slash I’m here to support my friend Kit.”

Chen’s eyes lit up as he passed back the IDs to the respective parties. “Oh Kit-noona? Yes she’s one of our DJ’s here – how do you know her?”

“University,” Namjoon replied with a wistful smile. “Met at a party – here I am this clueless transfer student who almost downed one of the worst drinks ever that would probably put me in bed for days and she warned me before I took a sip. Turns out both of us were dragged there by friends, so we ditched and she introduced me to the addictive chain called In-N-Out. It’s a burger place where she’s from by the way.”

Chen nodded as he gestured to the main dance and stage area. “Through those doors. Kai will be performing tonight but not sure if he’ll be first or a little later in the evening. We do have a bar and Kit will be in the DJ booth spinning. Enjoy yourselves.”

“Should I just get water? Or I don’t know maybe I could stand to loosen up a little?” Jimin worried.

“Ji breathe man!” Namjoon said with a shake of his head. “He’s just a dancer – you don’t have to go home with the guy! Tell you what, I’ll buy the first round of drinks, okay? We earned it after this hell week we’ve been through.”

Jimin relaxed his shoulders and nodded as they headed for the bar, grabbing stools to sit on. Sehun looked over his shoulder from restocking the liquors and told them he’d be with them in a minute. Namjoon yanked his wallet out of his pocket before sitting on the neighboring stool, arms straight ahead on the table.

Once Sehun confirmed that he had a full bar, he turned around and addressed the young men seated at his counter. “Good evening, what can I get for you?”

Namjoon turned to Jimin and prompted him for his drink order. Jimin hummed as he craned his neck, trying to see what was available. While the younger male was deciding, Namjoon pointed to a bottle of Hite and Sehun cracked open the container, pouring the contents into a cold glass.

“Soju,” Jimin announced as the beer was passed over to Namjoon. “Three shots of it.”

Namjoon nodded in agreement and slipped a few won from his wallet to pay the tab. Sehun filled three shot glasses with soju and placed them before Jimin, accepting the won from Namjoon with a polite bow.

“Change?”

“Nah man keep it, thanks,” Namjoon replied as he raised his glass. “Cheers Ji – another hellish semester behind us! And also to you getting to ogle over your heartthrob dancer’s ass tonight.”

“Oh come on Nam, shut up!!” Jimin groaned as he quickly downed a shot. His face flushed and he looked around to see who overheard.

Sehun snickered at the exchange and tilted his head. “You guys are here for someone?”

Namjoon jabbed a thumb at Jimin and revealed that the younger boy was here for Kai. “This guy’s got a crush on him and won’t stop going on about his body rolls or how smooth his transitions –”

“I hate you!” Jimin growled as he wiped his mouth after finishing the second shot. His cheeks were slowly starting to flush pink and he rubbed the back of his neck.

“You’re here for someone too?” Sehun prompted Namjoon as he wiped the counter.

“The master of the mixes over there!” Namjoon replied with a grin as he pointed his glass over at the DJ booth. “I’m proud of her – she used to play around with song combos all the time when no one was looking but she’d never share them! I tricked her into posting a few on SoundCloud and boom! Now she’s spinning for real!” He shook his head and smiled fondly before taking a long sip from his glass.

Jimin nearly stumbled off his seat when he saw the lights change on the stage and he blinked as a single light focused on Kai, who was standing in the center. He fumbled with the third shot and swallowed the contents before hastily ditching his stool at the bar to sit closer. Namjoon snickered as he watched his friend shyly move closer to the stage, eyes never leaving Kai.

“Well Kit-noona is in there,” Sehun mused as he pointed to the booth. “You can probably say hi after Kai’s dance. Can I get you or your friend anything else?”

Namjoon shook his head and thanked Sehun before drinking more beer, watching Jimin drool over the older male slipping off his blouse on stage. He rose from his stool and wandered over to the booth, lingering outside the door.

Kit spotted him from the corner of her eye and smiled warmly as she used a free hand to open the door, motioning for Namjoon to join her.

“Is that your friend?” she asked as she glanced over at the flushed faced Jimin.

“Yup, that loser has been eying Kai ever since someone showed him a video of the guy dancing,” Namjoon sighed as he shook his head. “Surprised how calm you are compared to the clients who are throwing their Won left and right.”

“You forget that looks aren’t everything in my book,” Kit reminded him with an amused look. “They’re a perk but I’d prefer chemistry first. Albeit I’ve had my fair share of my co-workers hitting on me.”

Namjoon tilted his head and gestured to Kai with his glass. Kit shook her head no and Namjoon jabbed a thumb at the bar. He received a slight side-to-side nod and he hummed with a knowing grin.

“There’s a few more dancers,” she replied. “Lay, he’ll be on in a bit and two of the private dancers Baekhyun and Suho. Unless your friend’s into them too, you’ll probably miss them tonight.”

“What about the guy at the front?”

“Who Chen? Nah, we’re just friends,” Kit replied. “Oh you thought he was into me because of the whole ‘noona’ deal, didn’t you?”

“He sure perked up when I mentioned your name,” Namjoon remarked. “You can’t blame me for asking – it’s not uncommon for co-workers to find potential mates through working together.”

“Very funny Namjoon,” Kit deadpanned with a pointed look. “Look, just because I spin in a strip club doesn’t mean one of my co-workers wants to bang me.”

“Chanyeol, you’re off today,” Chen informed the tall DJ when the latter approached the desk.

Chanyeol waved it away and murmured he wanted to check for the start of next week. “Luhan-hyung never made it clear who was playing for Tuesday’s gig versus the club so I wanted to...?”

Chen shrugged as he looked through the calendar, clicking on Chanyeol’s name in the scheduling program. “Ah you’re doing the VIP and Kit’s here per her normal schedule. Any other days you want me to double check?”

Chanyeol shook his head and murmured that he wanted to stop by to say hi quick. The schedule questions were just an excuse for him to stop in – he actually was hoping to ask Kit if she knew the young man who almost missed the subway last night.

It was late last night and I’d feel better knowing that she wasn’t harassed by a drunk, he told himself. He stepped through the doors and frowned when he saw another person standing beside Kit in the box.

“Ah hyung, I thought you were off today,” Sehun remarked when he spotted Chanyeol.

“Who’s that?” Chanyeol asked as he nodded over at the blonde next to Kit, who was pushing his glasses up.

“Oh he’s noona’s friend,” Sehun murmured. “Or well, I think they’re friends – he’s known her for a while. He’s responsible for getting her to do DJ-ing for real.”

Chanyeol tilted his head, brows knit as he watched the blonde point to a guy in the front, who was staring up at Kai with a dazed look. Kai had winked in the young man‘s direction and Kit seemed to be holding back a laugh when her blonde companion made a joke about it. The blonde had his hair styled in an uppercut and was pushing his glasses up on his nose.

Noona’s boyfriend? he thought as he watched them.

“Oh Ji looks like he’s died and gone to heaven!” Namjoon hooted as he doubled over laughing. His glass tipped forward and suddenly Hite beer had spilled over the front of Kit’s shirt and shorts.

“Shit! I’m so sorry Kit!” Namjoon blurted out when he realized what happened. He scanned the turn tables and machinery to make sure he hadn’t spilled anything on them and Kit followed suit before confirming that everything else in the booth was fine.

“I’ll get a towel, okay?” Namjoon said as he headed back toward the bar, trying to move quickly without spilling his beer again. While he was making his way over, Chanyeol made a beeline for the booth, pulling his jacket and flannel shirt off as he approached.

Kit removed her headphones and jumped slightly when she saw Chanyeol in the doorway. “Hey Slim Shady, thought you were off today.”

Chanyeol placed his flannel shirt in her hand and pointed with the other in the direction of the bathrooms. “Had to check my schedule for next week. Go change into that okay?”

“Chan it’s fine.”

Chanyeol shook his head and leaned closer, lips grazing her ear. “You shouldn’t be playing in wet clothes, not in this weather. Please go change?”

Kit sighed as she quickly checked her playlist, confirming that she had enough playing before slipping out of the booth with Chanyeol’s flannel in hand. Namjoon rushed to her side with the towel and bowed, offering several apologies. Sehun busied himself with drying Namjoon’s empty glass, watching as the scene unfolded before his eyes: Kit trying to reassure Namjoon that it was fine while dabbing excess beer with the towel, the latter saying sorry repeatedly with a flushed face, and Chanyeol watching the pair with a slightly bitter glint in his eyes.

“Nam it’s fine! It happens okay? Oh, I think your friend’s recovered – you might wanna go talk to him,” Kit said before excusing herself.

“Hyung, are you jealous?” Sehun asked Chanyeol.

Chanyeol blinked at the question and snorted. “Sehun it’s not a K-Drama – you’re being ridiculous! I just thought noona should change out of those clothes.”

Sehun nodded with an amused look as he placed the glass with the others. “Sure, you know best.” He bit back a smile as he replaced the soju with the other liquors. “Not sure why you’re still hanging around,” he murmured to himself with a shake of his head.

Namjoon and Jimin had headed up to the front after the incident, while Chanyeol lingered between the booth and the bar to ensure music was still playing.

After minute, Kit emerged sporting Chanyeol’s flannel as a shirt dress and her clothes folded in her hand. Because Chanyeol had longer arms, she was forced to roll up the sleeves a few times to uncover her hands. She tossed back the towel to Sehun and thanked him as she headed to the booth, Chanyeol following behind.

“Thanks Chan,” Kit said as she stuffed her clothes into her bag. “Looks like I’ll be doing laundry when I get home.”

Chanyeol nodded as he placed a hand on her shoulder, brushing a few strands of hair out of her face.

“You’re almost done, right?” he asked.

“Yes, in 15 minutes,” she sighed as she put her headphones around her neck.

“I’ll drive you home.”

“Chan, it’s fine – I’ll take the subway and you can walk me to the station like you’ve done before,” she replied.

He shook his head and crossed his arms over his chest. “I don’t want you riding it this late at night, not while wearing just my shirt. Plus it’s getting colder out.” He watched as Kit tried to protest but he softened his stance and tilted his head. “Please noona?”

Kit sighed as she played with her headphones for a few moments. “Fine.”

“I’ll change quick when we get there so you can take your shirt home,” Kit promised as Chanyeol neared her apartment.

“It’s fine noona,” he said with a shrug.

“I might as well hand it back now – I might not see you until next week, you know ‘cause of scheduling,” she said. She pointed out the visitor lot and Chan picked a spot to park in.

Her keys were in hand as she took the stairs and Chanyeol kept his eyes averted so he wouldn’t catch a glimpse. Kit unlocked the door and pushed it open, holding the door for Chan. He thanked her before stepping through it and glanced around curiously.

“I didn’t decorate or do much – it’s mostly stuff my brother’s friend did to the place,” Kit explained as she hung the keys on the hook by the door. She began untying her boots and kicked them off at the front entrance, Chanyeol following suit by removing his sneakers.

Kit fished her beer-soaked clothes out of her bag and made a beeline for the washer and dryer stacked on top of each other, which was set into the wall. She turned things inside out and tossed in stain remover plus a laundry pod, before shutting the door and programing it for the wash cycle. Chanyeol stood behind her, watching as she did this.

“I’ll change quick – hey, you okay?” Kit froze when she felt the taller boy wrap his arms around her, pulling her close to his body.

“I don’t want this shirt back,” he murmured. “I...like it on you. You look...ah...um, cute in it.”

“Th-thanks?” she said her face feeling warm. “What’s with the compliments and the rides and...?”

“Is he your boyfriend?”

“Huh? Who – Namjoon? Oh Chan he’s an old friend from college!,” Kit laughed with a shake of her head. “We’re like brother and sister – he is such a klutz and I usually have to be there to save his ass. Trust me, first time we met, he almost drank the spiked punch and would have been sick for a couple of days!”

Chanyeol lifted his head and leaned it on Kit’s shoulder, eyes wide. “What? You mean he’s –”

“What, did someone say we were dating?” Kit shook her head and laughed lightly.

Chanyeol reddened and mumbled that it looked like the other man had been interested. “I misread it – ah I’m sorry noona!”

“Chan, no need to be jealous,” Kit murmured as she patted his head. “No boyfriend right now. ...So does that mean you like me?”

Chanyeol swallowed hard and squeezed his eyes shut, the blush coloring his cheeks.

“Ah um,” he stammered, “ah...I found your SoundCloud page. But, but this was before the VIP event. Chen said I should listen and give you a chance.”

“Did Suho make you jealous too?”

“Noona I like Suho-hyung, he’s talented but very, very flirty,” Chanyeol admitted. “I can’t...explain it, but when he met you that day...”

Kit turned her head and allowed a faint smile to cross her lips. She twisted her body and hugged him, pressing a gentle kiss to his cheek.

“Pinch me...it has to be a dream,” Chan mumbled as he shook his head.

She cupped his cheeks in her hands and tugged him down for a real kiss. His eyes flew open in surprise but soon closed as he twisted his body to hold her in his arms.

“Noona, after we put our differences aside, I thought we were just going to be friends,” Chanyeol admitted as he slowly broke off the kiss. “But it was...hard to see Suho flirt with you, your friend standing so close in the booth-”

“So I grew on you?” she teased. “I’ll be honest, first time we met before you started yelling in my face, I thought ‘Damn he’s tall and hey, that hair’s cool’. Never thought we’d be here now.” She smiled as she released his face and quickly checked her watch. “Did you already eat dinner? ‘Cause if not, I was gonna order takeout somewhere and eat while waiting for my stuff to finish.”

Chanyeol perked up at the mention of food and shook his head, murmuring that he only ate a light snack before coming over to the club. Kit beckoned for him to follow her to the kitchen and dug around in a drawer for some menus. She passed over a few and prompted him to pick one to order from.

“I’ll pay noona,” he said once he selected what he wanted.

“Aww Chan, it’s cool - I’m the one inviting you to stay so -”

Chanyeol shook his head and smiled widely, flashing his teeth. “Ah but noona, a guy should pay on the first date. Also it’s my way of saying I’m sorry for being so jealous earlier.”

“Tchik! Tchik!”

“You should take it,” Chanyeol replied as he met her eyes.

“No you got there first Chan, it’s yours,” Kit insisted as she withdrew her chopsticks.

Chanyeol studied the remaining piece of fried chicken and plucked off half of the meat with his chopsticks. He pushed the rest of the piece toward Kit with a smug grin. “We’ll split it.”

“Oh fine,” she sighed with a small smile, pulling it towards her. “I probably shouldn’t be eating it.”

“Hey, no talking about your figure – I like it,” Chanyeol warned. “Besides, I like that your body...” He put his chopsticks down and gestured his hands in swishing motions to mimic an hourglass shape.

Kit looked up from eating the final piece and smiled faintly. “So you were checking me out,” she teased.

“Uh um, well...I guess I was,” he sighed with a guilty grin. He took a sip from his can and wiped his mouth with a napkin, before checking his watch. “Wae, how is it so late?!”

Kit put her chopsticks down and wiped her mouth. “You shouldn’t be driving this late, especially after a beer,” she warned. “Look, this might seem a bit forward, but you um...I have an extra futon here and you are welcome to use it.”

“You’re sure?” Chanyeol asked.

“Positive,” Kit confirmed before excusing herself to move her clothes to the dryer.

“You can crash now Chan – I’ll be up for a few more minutes waiting for the dryer,” Kit said after she laid out the spare futon and blankets.

Chanyeol blinked and shook his head as he sat down on the futon. “No I’ll stay up – it’s no trouble. Besides, I don’t have to go in early tomorrow.” He pulled out his phone and scowled when he saw the battery was low. “Aish, do you um –”

“Here,” Kit said as she passed over her charger. She pointed to a nearby outlet and Chan thanked her as he plugged it in before connecting his phone to the other end. The screen flashed that he had missed messages on KakaoTalk from Sehun and Baekhyun.

Chanyeol rolled his eyes at the messages and snorted. Honestly these two needed to stop meddling and acting like this was a real life K-Drama.

“Sehunnie message you too?” Kit called out.

“Wha?” Chanyeol jumped, staring in the direction of the washer and dryer.

“Just got a message from him asking if I got home safely or if he needs to talk to you afterwards,” Kit continued. “Don’t worry, I’ll answer him.”

Chanyeol grumbled under his breath about Sehun as he typed back to Baekhyun.

dj_pcy: Her friend spilled beer on her so I gave her my shirt and took her home. It’s getting cold out and she shouldn’t ride the subway at night in just my shirt. dj_pcy: That guy’s not her boyfriend.

Shortly after Chanyeol sent his replies, Sehun sent over two more messages.

viviismylife: Ok, you’re off the hook. viviismylife: noona said you got her home safely. Sorry hyung.

“All right, dryer’s finally done – you can crash now,” Kit announced as she closed the door. She folded her clothes and carried them to the dresser, placing them in their respective piles before closing the drawer. She undid the top few buttons on Chanyeol’s shirt and unhooked her bra, slipping the straps off and placing the garment in a top drawer. She refastened the buttons and yawned as she made her way to the living room to bid Chanyeol good night.

“Sleep well Chan,” she said with a small wave before heading for her bedroom.

Chanyeol sat up and put his phone face down on the ground. “He-hey noona?”

Kit shuffled back to the living room and looked back at him. “Yes?”

“Ah...um, well this is hard to um, ask, but um,” Chanyeol stammered. “May I um, move the futon to your room? Maybe, hold your hand?”

“Afraid of the dark?” Kit teased.

Chanyeol raised a brow and shook his head. “Ah no, I want to be closer to noona, because I like her.”

“Yes,” she replied with a smile. She held a hand out for his pillow and he passed it over. He picked up the futon and blankets, following Kit to the bedroom and placing them to the right of her bed.

Kit placed his pillow at the top of the futon and scrambled onto her bed, one hand pulling back the covers. She burrowed underneath them and leaned over, hand lingering by the lamp as she waited for Chanyeol to get settled. Chan made himself comfortable and extended his hand out, waiting for her to take it.

Her smaller hand slipped into his and he smiled, admiring the size difference. He closed his fingers around it and pressed his lips to the top of her hand.

“You’re a little cheesy Chan,” she laughed before flicking the lights off.

“Call me a hopeless romantic.”

“It’s endearing and, I like that about you.”

CDramas: A Love So Beautiful + Wait, My Youth

I binged watched these two Chinese dramas recently to try to improve my Mandarin - first A Love So Beautiful and then Wait, My Youth. Casual thoughts underneath the cut!

A Love So Beautiful What I liked:

The pre-credit scenes! Honestly some of my favorite parts of the whole drama. Felt like some of them were genuinely clever and funny. I especially enjoyed the ones that showing Jiang Chen’s thoughts when talking to Xiaoxi’s mom, showing how Jiang Chen deliberately put stuff in the back seat to make Xiaoxi sit in the front, and the one that reveals how Jing Xiao’s mom was initially hostile to Lu Yang when he visited.

The chemistry among the main characters - I liked how although romance is clearly a big theme and driving force of the drama, the friendships among the characters felt genuine and nice constant in a way that was shown more than told to the audience, and it was heartwarming to see them support each other. For instance, I appreciated how Chen Xiaoxi and Lu Yang were friends in a way that not only never was romantic but also was not for the purpose of talking about their romantic interests.

I’ll talk a little more about Jiang Chen thoughts later, but

The part when Chen Xiaoxi is trying to ask Wu Bosong about any traumatic events in his swimming journey, only to find out that he doesn’t have any (though of course, later he injures himself :/)

The part when Wu Bosong helps cheer up Chen Xiaoxi on the pineapple water floating thingy I actually had initially started and then stopped watching this series before I recently decided to finish it because I was annoyed that Chen Xiaoxi ends up with Jiang Chen. Not that she should have necessarily ended up with Wu Bosong, but it’s clear overall that he just treats her better. :/

Generally I just enjoyed Wu Bosong, Lin Jing Xiao, and Lu Yang’s characters and actually liked watching them more than the main couple most of the time.

What I didn’t like:

How Jiang Chen, like 90% of the time... doesn’t treat Chen Xiaoxi well - this blog post does a good job of illustrating how his behavior is actually pretty toxic/problematic in a way that the show never really addresses. It’s annoying that just because he’s good-looking and intelligent/successful, he gets a free pass to be a jerk.

Also didn’t like all the times characters comment on how good-looking he is and how Chen Xiaoxi looks too plain to be with him :///

How Lin Jing Xiao and Lu Yang’s characters kind of just... stop developing once they all get into college (and their relationship is kind of treated not super seriously besides when they get married)

Wait, My Youth What I liked:

The main couple! I really appreciated the steady and gradual development of Su Cancan and Lan Tianye’s relationship from enemies (I somehow totally didn’t catch when I first watched that Tianye had deflated Cancan’s bike tire in the first episode) to friends to lovers. I could say a lot more, but I just really appreciated the characters’ chemistry, each action, big or small, they do to support each other through the various challenges they go through.

Emphasis on the mutual teasing - Like, Lan Tianye can definitely say some mean things, but it’s clear that Su Cancan is also able to tease him back and doesn’t internalize what he says. Sure, he’s not innocent of pushing Su Cancan away when he’s upset/jealous (e.g. when he first realizes she actually likes Lin Jiazhe in episode 5, or when he is curt with her when it seems she might not go to the Jay Chou concert with him later), but he also does show that he cares for her both through his actions and his words.

I’m not well-versed in Asian dramas so not sure how unconventional this is, but I did appreciate how although Lan Tianye definitely rescues Su Cancan in many traditional ways, she is also given a chance to stand up for/defend him on more than one occasion

How Lan Tianye genuinely thinks that Su Cancan likes him for the first few episodes (and how Lin Jiazhe apparently also thinks she likes Lan Tianye???). It’s both sad and satisfying when he learns the truth

The part when the radio club members each almost seem like they’re about to wish happy birthday to Su Cancan (what trolls, haha)

How eventually Su Cancan and Tao Yating become friends (though I wish they had done more to develop their friendship than they did)

The breakup felt pretty understandable/in-character based on how Lan Tianye and Su Cancan had both been developed up to that point (though no clue how realistic it is for her to not have gotten in three times :(). It was definitely sad, but also felt true to the characters/the themes the show had been setting up of going after your goals/dreams

I also like how it wasn’t just any one of their faults, really - while I appreciated that Tao Yating called Lan Tianye out for the attitude with which he was treating Su Cancan, it’s also clear that she was not helping the relationship by keeping things from him (even if it was for an understandable reason)

I liked Ms. Huang (especially the scene when she pretends to be strict to a student about reading after the gaokao, and also when she coaches her students on test tips before the gaokao) and I’m glad they visit her at the end.

I appreciated that you get to see that Lan Tianye and Lin Jiazhe caring for each other/being good friends - I honestly wish there was more of that after they go to college, even when they are competing for Su Cancan (kind of sad that it seems like Lan Tianye would used to go support Lin Jiazhe at his performances, but that’s not really shown/mentioned later).

What I didn’t like:

I didn’t enjoy the other characters as much as in ALSB - or at least, I felt like the show was trying to make the viewers feel like the radio club members were a cohesive group of friends, but I don’t think I ever really believed it. Or at least not to the degree that the friends in ALSB felt like friends. Granted, maybe this is more realistic/representative of how friend groups can be, but it definitely felt less compelling to watch.

I think part of the reason the friendships felt less real is that most of their interactions with each other involved talking about their romantic love interests?

While I liked Meili herself and I liked that she was getting her own development/story arc once they get to college, I wasn’t super interested in her relationship with Tang Xingyi

Even more than the above, I really didn’t care about Tao Yating and Lin Zhou’s “relationship” / her one-sided crush beyond being glad that they didn’t actually end up together / it didn’t seem like he ever reciprocated her feelings. (Reaaalllly glad they didn’t end up going down that route.)

I totally thought the show was going to do more with Wenxin (Cancan’s roommate/Lin Zhou’s sister), but it seems like she only existed to have a random and hopeless crush on Lin Jiazhe, encourage Lan Tianye about his feelings, and contrive an interaction between Tao Yatin and Lin Zhou.

Not sure if this was the acting, but Lin Jiazhe was unsettling to me at first - I think it was hard for me to get a grasp on his character/how he was actually feeling and thinking. I also thought the beginning of his feelings for Su Cancan (that they both like Harry Potter) felt kind of random/not super meaningful.

I’m in Love with Lost Love in Times

I’ve been trying to find a really good C-drama since Scarlet Heart with the right blend of fantasy/history, heartache, and story, and I think I’ve found it in Lost Love in Times. It is, without a doubt, the most engaged I’ve been with a C-drama in a long time - let’s hope it continues to be that way.

Mild spoilers ahead.

Story

Qing Chen is a Mage, a magic user sworn to protect the Wei State. Yuan Ling is the 4th prince, a general meant to bring peace to his people. After being saved by Qing Chen, Yuan Ling takes over the throne and is determined to marry her. However, nothing good can come between the union of the Grand Sorceress and the Emperor. When Yuan Zhan, the 7th prince, throws a coup on the couple’s wedding, Qing Chen is forced to cast a spell to reset the world, where she will make things right and swear to not be the cause for her love’s downfall.

Comments: The first five episodes go by so fast that if you blink you might miss it. But once we get to the altered timeline where the meat of the story is, it keeps going at a brisk, refreshing pace. Conflicts arise and get solved within the next episode or two but there are always consequences so it never feels like things just happen for no reason. Honestly, it’s been a while since I’ve watched a drama where there is a logical progression of story where events scaffold on one another, where the big event everything leads to actually meets and exceeds my expectations. I really hope for this pacing and story to continue as it has because it’s great so far.

Characters

Qing Chen (Cecilia Liu) is a wonderful mix of intelligent, cunning, and proactive. She initiates a lot of her interactions with the other characters and is always doing something to move the story forward in a transparent way. For example, when she is investigating a brothel that’s a cover-up for a cult of Dark/Black Mages, she goes to ask Yuan Ling for advice because he had looked into them before. There is no time for any shenanigans here, no “I can’t tell him I’m doing this thing because I’m a noble idiot” that so many other dramas do. I love it.

Yuan Ling (William Chan) is aloof, serious, and confident. Like Qing Chen, he’s very proactive in the story and doesn’t bother trying to play games. It also helps that he acknowledges the females around him as equals in intelligence and physical strength. When the other mages (who are female) help him during an ambush, he doesn’t brush them off but kindly says thanks and that’s that. No need to act macho or anything.

Yuan Zhan (Xu Hai Qiao) is calm, refined, and loves music and flowers. At first, he’s not into politics and wants to stay out of it. But when his mother kills his brother to frame Yuan Ling, he goes straight into action and is shown to have a strong sense of morality. He’s a nice foil to Yuan Ling as an intellectual and more emotional partner to Qing Chen.

The whole cast of characters are well put together. It helps that each one feels like they have lives outside the main story and are shown to be just as competent as the main trio. The villains' plans are thought out and their motives aren’t just petty things. The other supporting characters have just enough screen time to showcase their abilities and honestly do a lot for the main story.

And FOR ONCE, there isn’t an evil, jealous girl who’s out to get our heroine or do stupid things to get our heroes’ attention. Like, thank you.

Technical Stuff

The costumes are well put together except for a few choices of head pieces. Lots of flowing sleeves and soft fabrics, which is my type of thing. I couldn’t be happier.

Cinematography is done well here, as well as integration of CGI. When we’re in a more fantastical setting, you can tell, but it’s not so much in your face. Also, no CGI talking animals so far, so everything’s alright with me. There is a little too much sparkle for me, but that’s more of a personal preference.

Stunt work is done well and integrates the magic nicely when we need it. There are a few nonsense hand motions that I find cheesy, but nothing that takes away from the story.

Overall, I like the way the drama looks. It adds more to the story than it takes away.

Ramblings - Female Characters and Complex, Mutual Relationships

I love how equal men and women are in Lost Love’s universe. The Mages, for the most part, are all female and are treated with just as much respect as the trained warriors (because that’s what they are). The relationships we see between men and women are generally mutual and based on admiration and acknowledgment of the other’s strengths. Even when relationships aren’t mutual, there’s a common understanding of why. This makes for more interesting conflicts down the road and more complex relationships.

The first couple we actually see on screen is Xi Xie and Tao Yao, two top-ranking Mages. The former is Qing Chen’s mentor and father figure. The latter is her senior and mother figure. They’re clearly a couple, but never act on it because of their devotion to the Wei and the Mages. They both understand where the other is coming from and would do anything to protect what the other wants. At the same time, they aren’t completely dependent on the other. Tao Yao is competent in her own right and is shown coming up with her own strategies and fending for herself quite well. In the altered timeline, Xi Xie is missing but that doesn’t stop Tao Yao from protecting the other Mages by basically building an underground city. She loves Xi Xie, sure, but isn’t going to let that stop her from defending her sisters.

Another great female character is Princess Duo Xia of the neighboring A-Chai tribe. She is first shown on screen commanding her own small army to free the captured Mages so they can help her people. Later, she fights Yuan Ling and is bested by him. It is then that she decides she wants to marry him, but she explains that her reasons aren’t just that he beat her in martial arts or that he’s handsome. She knows of his reputation as a general and thinks that that’s what the A-Chai need. She isn’t being petty or single-minded. She’s thinking of all sides of her situation and picking the best option. When she confesses later and guesses Yuan Ling loves Qing Chen, and instead of plotting to murder Qing Chen (which is soooo refreshing for a second female lead in these kinds of dramas), she acknowledges Yuan Ling’s feelings for another and doesn’t try to push the issue. Then she challenges Qing Chen because she KNOWS Qing Chen loves Yuan Ling but won’t act on it. There is a mutual understanding of feelings, and that makes Duo Xia’s relationship to both so much more fun to watch.

Honestly, I can go on and on, but I’m gonna stop there because I think you get my point.

Conclusion and Recommendations

Because of the great characters, interesting story, and visuals, I’m gonna stick with this drama. It’s the only one so far that’s managed not to play into too many annoying cliches and stands out from the plethora of historical, fantasy romance I’ve seen so far.

If you’re also looking for a C-drama with smart characters, a faster pace story, and beautiful visuals, this is one to watch. Just hold out through the first five episodes and I swear it’ll be worth it.
