Muki

     A classic rags to riches style story, Muki and her sister grew up in a much more unsavory setting.

     Father dying while they were young and sending their mother spiraling, Muki and her sister both has to raise themselves for a long time. Due to this Muki didn’t gain many social skills, having to focus on surviving more than living a childhood. Little does she realize her older sister Tailor got the worse end of the issue.

     Despite her situation, Muki always admired The Bad Crowd’s previous ruler. Needing someone to idolize and inspire her (RIP Tailor), she turned to lionizing Bluster’s mother. Dreaming of one day performing for her.

     She never got to live that dream.

     While Muki always loved to sing, turning to it as a comfort in her younger years and overtime becoming a talent, she started gaining attention for it in her late teens. At first she didn’t adjust to the sudden praise well, not being used to any sort of spotlight, but after taking some advice from her sister she embraced the opportunity for a better life.

     Play a persona that can handle it. That’s what she had to do, and damnit it worked. A wall of mean blocking out the real her that would undoubtedly get pushed over. Muki only gained more and more traction as word spread about her, and the fake face had to stay on more and more.

     Until eventually…well it just wasn’t fake anymore.

     The defense mechanism used to keep herself from being used becoming so vital to her life it simply never left. Becoming even more defensive and cruel worded as time went on, and she treated everyone around her equally awful.

     Nobody would notice this change, not knowing the little girl she used to be.

     But Tailor did.

     Additional character relations note:

Muki collabed with another music artist named Pic Ringlee during the early stages of her singing career. While at the time she was singing safe poppy stuff that didn’t challenge her much, Ringlee heard her music and could just tell her voice was capable of more. He offered her the chance to collab on a song with him, which she happily accepted.

     The collab itself was fine, great even, and got Muki’s name further out there. Since then her main style of music incorporated both rock and pop into a mesh of a blend that made her stand out. However, also completely overshadow Ringlee. Leading to a growing resentment and eventual blow up at Muki, a major blow to her ego considering she’d grown to look up to the guy.

     Later on Ringlee would realize just how childish it was of him to act as such after a long series of misfortunes. But his story is for another day.

     Years later when he reached out to Muki to make things right she absolutely refused to listen to him. The fact it wasn’t long after Tailor ditched her not helping in the slightest. Accidentally just contributing to Muki’s slow but steady mental slip.

     Additional character relations note:

Muki has a body guard named Unar she eventually fell into a situationship with. Remember him, their whole deal will be revealed when he’s posted. Just wanna note he’s important

Tailor

     Growing up Tailor had to not only raise herself due to her mother’s depressive negligence, but had to raise her little sister too. Giving up many learning opportunities when it came to her passion, fashion, so she could be there for her sister. Never telling Muki about the given up classes and job offers. Despite only being three years older than her, Tailor practically becoming a parent against her will.

     On some nights, she did find time to sketch and design outfits. Almost never being able to bring them to life, but her drive to brainstorm couldn’t die. Especially when Muki also found it interesting. Sometimes snuggling up next to her and watching her sketch to fall asleep. Tailor never minded, in fact, she liked that her sister enjoyed her work. Even if it only stayed on the pages for years.

     At most she would have to sew up holes in their clothes or adjust them to fit new sizes, unable to spend money on buying more. She gifted presents to Muki when she could, but with their mother’s depression only making her sick over the years, they both knew what they needed to focus on.

     Eventually, Muki’s talents were the ones noticed. Both of them knowing how much of an opportunity The Bad Crowd hearing her voice could be, Tailor did everything she possibly could to help her. Finally, she was making real outfits. Simple ones, sure, but she was sewing and cutting again. All the while doing everything possible to help her sister adjust and find her places to perform. Slowly but surely getting her sister more well known not only in their area, but further out as well.

     As Muki became more popular and found ways to handle the limelight she always dreamed of beaming on her, she took Tailor with her. Rising budgets for a rising star, she was making the outfits she always dreamed of. Who better to costume design for Muki than her own sister?

     But things didn’t stay so great. Money was flowing, absolutely. They could finally indulge in simple treats they didn’t get to when they were young. But Muki…changed.

     At the start Tailor gave her some advice to beat her first show stage freight. Advice Muki would never let go of.

     “Be someone who can do it.”

     She remembered it word for word, over the years haunted by her own quote.

     Muki did become someone who could handle the music business. Someone mean, cruel, spoiled, and entitled. Unbearable to work with and constantly switching out employees.

     But Tailor stayed.

     Despite the fact she began being treated just as badly as Muki treated others, Tailor owed her sister. At least she felt like she did. Muki was the reason she wasn’t hungry while sewing clothes and designing costumes. She needed to be there, it was her sister damnit!…

     But a person can only take so much.

     She doesn’t understand why that day in particular drove her over the edge, but one too many dismissals of her work left Tailor absolutely heartbroken and hurt. She didn’t even care how many other people witnessed that fight.

     Tailor quit, unsure of where she was gonna go next.

     After taking some time off and collecting herself, Tailor began to look for real work again. Working for Muki before, many people wanted her. It wouldn’t be hard to find a good offer, but there was one that stood out above the others. One she just couldn’t refuse.

     Bluster didn’t even mind if she altered the complementary jacket! Granted, he didn’t expect her to go THAT nuts with it. But hey, her clothes not his.

Muki and Tailor can also be seen being depicted as friends with Kai and Minx respectively

Kai and Minx both belong to @zip-toonz

I’m not knowledgeable on them enough to write full blown bios about the characters on Toonie’s behalf but to sum the dynamics up shortly

Muki and Kai are both beloved singers that met each other through the music business. However both of them are very flawed people that have made some big mistakes, so they totally help each other realize that and grow right—? No they enable the hell out of each other because doing so in turn justifies their own actions as well.

Tailor meets Minx not long after leaving Muki and quickly end up being friends and bond over their shockingly similar turmoils. Unlike Muki and Kai, instead of bonding and enabling each other, they bond and find ways to help each other and grow. Especially Minx helping Tailor,,stuff’s a lot fresher for Tailor

2023 idol fest was such a joy to see! I am a sucker for Miku cosplays and the design and dedication to Winter Muki’s outfit was 👩‍🍳👌💋 I loved seeing everyone’s hard work into this year’s festival! Seeing everyone’s process throughout the year leading up to the fest was super exciting and entertaining. I hope I’m not the only one how gets exited every year and starts trying to make costumes for idols like I’m a fashion designer! I get bored soon after and remember I lack a lot in that department! True love to those who painstakingly create those outfits and rehearse the songs. I was so disappointed to see how they downgraded the screen! I feel that it’s a huge mistake to downgrade because idols put so much time and hard work into the backgrounds! I usually talk about serious issues but it’s so fun to talk about my interests! I hope anyone reading this enjoys my thought on idol fest 2023! ❤️

She has some souvenirs she’s kept from travelling as a soldier. Some of them are engraved weapons, others are jewelry or artwork.

She gets freckles very easily, and likes her freckles a lot!

She has more than the Fenrir tattoo. She’d get them from her travels and thinks of them as art and souvenirs for her body. The ones out in the open are simpler designs, while the ones under clothes are more detailed.

She likes to keep her hair short. When she had to wear Junko’s wigs she hated it because they were scratchy and heavy. The longest she’s had her hair as a choice has been a shoulder-length mullet

She has a few scars from battle, but not a lot since she is the Ultimate Soldier

She doesn’t wear sunglasses even though she has fair eyes, mostly because she forgets them. She never forgets her shooting range glasses though.

Extreme citizen science gives a voice to the marginalised in remote communities

Forest communities are guardians of biodiversity. Now they can contribute their knowledge to scientific projects designed to protect ecosystems by inputting data in tailor-made systems.

The practice of citizen science (CS) has become well established in the past decade or so. Working with professional researchers, interested volunteers take part in scientific discoveries, observations, experiments and data analysis using new technologies. It is one way people are able to contribute to addressing real-world challenges.

Some citizen science projects have crossed over to the mainstream and become so well known, they’re almost community events. Wildlife surveys, astronomy and chemical analysis are performed by ordinary people working as volunteers with scientific platforms as volunteers. 

This kind of backyard-boffin uses apps and computers to populate databases with observations or donates spare computer capacity to high-performance computing applications. The collective effort sometimes breaks through to new discoveries large and small.

But research carried out with the aid of the general public is taken up a notch with extreme citizen science (ECS). This approach includes people who are normally excluded from CS initiatives because of educational or technical barriers. 

Through an ECS initiative, EU researchers have collaborated on a conservation project with the Baka (Bayaka) People of the Congo Basin, Central Africans who are amongst the world’s true forest people.

The Baka people are adept hunter-gatherers. They exist by hunting, fishing and foraging plants. Having lived as forest custodians for thousands of years, they possess an intimate and unrivalled knowledge of the plant and animal species it contains.

Traditional ecological knowledge

There’s a unique value in recruiting all types of people from diverse societies to citizen science endeavours. There is growing awareness of the importance of the traditional ecological knowledge (TeK) held by indigenous peoples. Novel methods and tools are needed to enable communities with low literacy levels to record and visualise data about their surroundings. 

The ECSAnVis project builds on existing knowledge of how non-literate people and those with little or no understanding of technology can successfully take part in producing research questions and collecting the required data.

‘We focused on creating software called Sapelli that runs on mobile phones and allows non-literate people to collect information about their area with an app that participated in the design (Sapelli Viewer) that is suitable for such users. We tested the software in communities in Cameroon, Brazil, Namibia and Congo,’ said project coordinator Muki Haklay. 

Data collected by the users is visualised on a map. The use of such tools means hunter-gatherer societies are included in research activities and their unsurpassed local knowledge is tapped for the sustainable management of our global environment. 

Guardians of biodiversity

Indigenous people and local communities are natural guardians of biodiversity. When they share their TeK, which complements data from scientific research, it helps prevent species loss. 

Through ECS initiatives, researchers collaborate with these groups by employing new forms of data entry that apply their inherent knowledge to create forest management plans. 

These plans are used by commercial logging companies to ensure sustainable use of the forest, which protects biodiversity and local communities.

Participating hunter-gatherers can geo-tag key resources that they do not want to be damaged by forest industry. They can monitor logging activities that take place in their forest areas and identify commercial bushmeat poaching activities that damage wildlife and undermines their ability to maintain their traditional lifestyles. 

The system does not just protect forest biodiversity, it helps indigenous people preserve their culture. They visit the location of food sources or cultural sites and by selecting an appropriate corresponding icon on a mobile phone they pin it on a map to record its position. 

The icons are adapted to local conditions and the designs are based on original images that are tested with the whole community to discover which ones are the most easily understandable and relevant to the people who use them. 

In this way the local people participated in the co-development of the software, informing the science team what they wanted to protect so that the software could be tailored to the community’s needs. The lessons learned in the Congo are relevant to other indigenous communities around the world and can be adopted using this approach. 

The data collected under ECS surveys empowered the Baka communities to protect their forest home by mapping their resources and sacred sites to combat illegal logging and wildlife poaching.

Researchers developed a Geographic Information System (GIS) that can store large amounts of data, show and analyse change over time, and visualise possible future trends, while being capable of taking TeK inputs and managing them in a culturally sensitive way to support the needs of indigenous groups and communities.

Marginalised voices

The system was quickly extended to Namibia and the Brazilian Amazon to support local communities in their attempts to combine TeK with scientific analysis to improve environmental management.

‘We overcame the challenging conditions by developing and applying techniques from different scientific disciplines, such as participatory observation and participatory mapping, as well as hardware solutions for charging mobile phones in places where there is no electricity,’ explained Muki Haklay. 

Data-driven maps mean local knowledge and environmental data can be made explicit in ways that enable us to understand problems better. By bringing together these different perspectives, exciting new technologies are emerging that can efficiently communicate across linguistic and cultural barriers to give a voice to normally marginalised people.

By empowering people in distant, extreme environments, like tropical forests, we can now begin a vital collaboration that will help us to become more aware of the environmental changes that are going on around us, which is the objective of ECS. 

The system is open source. ‘Having worked with lots of different communities across the world and shared our software and methodology openly, I’m very pleased that now any person who wants to replicate our approach can do that,’ Muki Haklay said.

I couldn't help but smile when I look at her, especially when she's performing. Even when she's just rehearsing, seeing her so engrossed in her work makes me love her even more. "Mukuro?" My heart skips a beat whenever I hear her say my name

I focus, trying to act as though I weren't just daydreaming about her, "What's up?"

"What do you think? Should the elbows go like this," she demonstrated a dance move, jutting her elbows and closed fists to the sides, away from her chest, "or like this?" and then she had one closed-fist arm punch up, while one jutted down

"Um... hm. Lemme see both with the rest of the combo?"

She nodded and reset herself, taking a breath to concentrate and get into character. She pops her head up, displaying her literal award-winning smile as she does her set of steps with energy through every inch of her body. "Okay, that's option one," she explained, and then reset herself once again

It's times like this that make me think things are too good to be true. We're such close friends that she trusts me in her room. She trusts me to guard her phone so she doesn't get distracted while rehearsing. She trusts me to ask for my opinion when creating new work for her girl group. I watched her perform the combo again— with slight variations— and sighed as I rested my chin in the palms of my hands. Once she finished, she panted a bit, catching her breath, "That was option two."

"Yeah, I think with the rest of the moves, the arms flow more naturally into option one. Option two looks a little forced, you know, as an audience member."

"Thank you, Muki!"

I smiled as I watched her grab the sheet music off her floor and scribble notes. Her tongue stuck out slightly while she was focused on writing. Adorable. I sighed again and one of my hands fell onto the book I forgot was open under me. Right: it's Talent Development Hour; I'm supposed to be studying.

Sayaka loves Talent Development Hour. She gets to practice her vocal technique, or rehearse dance combinations, or sketch flashy costume designs. She is so passionate about her Talent, and here I am, reading a book on human psychology to learn more about interrogation. The idea is that if I learn more about how people think, I'll be able to sway them better if I'm in an interrogation situation. I already know my strong suit is battle tactics and combat strategy; I hate having to force myself to become better at something that frustrates me— talking to people.

Communication has always been a struggle for me. Sayaka is one of the few people who understands and lets me take my time. She vouches for me. She's loyal and caring. I don't think I could've resisted falling in love with her if I tried.

Muki is a pop star idol that rose to fame due to both a lack of competition and skills. Despite her popularity and adoration amongst fans, those within the business absolutely hate working with her. What started off as a stern and mean front to help her rise to stardom overtime became the real her. Now constantly cruel and irritable to those around her, she only has a handful of people that stick by her. One of those people is her sister, Tailor. Tailor is an overall sweet person with a raw skill for fashion craftsmanship. Who else would be better fit to be Muki’s costume and fashion designer than her own sister? Dragging her into a more lavish life with her, Tailor was given an easy road to a living by working for her sister. Becoming a well known fashion designer and often being sought out for other work. However always denying in favor of working for Muki. Despite her kind nature, Tailor doesn’t stand for people mistreating her or people close to her. Able to snap on a second and tell em what for. Except when it comes to one person. Muki. Tailor became no exception to Muki’s growing brash personality. Treating her the same way she treats everyone else, beneath her. But, of course, it’s her sister. What could she do about it? She is the whole reason she’s here after all.

This was literally sitting as a WIP on my desktop for two months so oops here it finally is lmao. 

So OK, years ago I made a one off cute kitsune girl design that I was not gonna do much with but I did it for a drawtober like prompt. Anyway, after I made Mukie, I remembered this design and I desperately wanted to bring her back, so here’s Keiko, Mukie’s younger five-tailed sister!

Keiko is a wild one lol. She’s essentially a hippie in many ways; she hides her tails and ears well and hangs out with humans, having partied and drank late into the early morning hours with them for centuries. She’s even slept with many, but hasn’t found any being, human or yokai, to catch her romantic eye yet. Her reason for being among humans so much is simple; she adores them. 

A species so wracked with suffering and cruelty, and yet, they rise from the ashes and have capacity for such kindness. She loves to go to the bars with the fun drunks and laugh and talk stories with them, and find out what makes them tick. Like Mukie, she attained a magic eye at her 500 year mark, but instead of how he used his to see people’s weakspots, she used her magic to make her eye be able to see what people’s hearts truly desire and what would make them happiest. So she often goes on long trips and seeks out people in suffering and heartache, and sees if it’s possible to help them find the happiness she has. She doesn’t do it for any moral obligation or money; she’s just...really chill and content with life. 

Keiko’s symbol on her head is the lotus flower, while Mukie’s is the question mark. Her symbol is a symbol from her soul, and it shows that she’s able to rise from any fall or horror and come out even stronger. She’s chill and lovable, but she’s also no stranger to pain and heartache. But her symbol shows that she’s always had the ability to reach enlightenment, or true happiness, from the get-go. Her very aura and magic radiates a happy feeling to others, and although she has no where near the magic level or abilities that Mukie has, she’s mastered what she has already. Think of Mukie as the kid who was given too much power too early; he’s got god powers and whatnot, but it’s wild magic, and sometimes even he can’t control it. Keiko is precise and knows her magic inside and out. And, she’s looking forward to what else will unlock inside her when she gets more tails. 

She also adores her brother to the moon and back, and would be willing to do anything for him. It hurt her when he burnt his temple down, because her heart hurt for her brother who felt ultimately betrayed by humans. She knew humans were capable of cruelty, but Mukie had to learn the hard way. Still, now she’s happy that he’s come around to liking them again and she loves to make appearances on his gameshow. 

Also it seems the feral gremlin nature runs in the family, because while Keiko is kind, she’s not above being a little shit lol. But she’s much less malicious than Mukie is and she reserves her shittiness to doing stupid harmless pranks and making people flustered with jokes lol. And she has a big weakness for sake lol.
