📚 Is there a fanfic or fanfic writer you recommend? Aaaargh, you know that I forget any opinion I've ever held the second anyone asks me for one! There's so many incredibly talented ppl in this fandom, and so many fantastic fics, how am I to choose one??? Here's some I've read and loved recently:

hunter's moon by mourningshowers: a very intriguing werewolf AU with a cool, unique spin on pack dynamics, and stunning prose - the descriptions of ppl's scents in particular stuck with me, they're so vivid and evocative! butter, sugar, and northern mockingbirds by @thefreakandthehair: the most perfectest, soft, mushy, sweet bakery AU. If you're in need of a fic that will leave you feeling all warm and fuzzy and happy inside, this is a definite rec! Never coming down (with your hand in mine) by @eyesofshinigami: the latest instalment in their omega!Eddie series, which I adore. If you're into a/b/o and omega Eddie, give this one a read!

🔮 Any advice for writers working through burnout or writer’s block?

Some things that work for me, personally:

Just write! I sit myself down, set a word count (100 words, 200 words, doesn't matter, it's about getting started) and don't get up or hop on socials before I have written that word count down. Maybe I'll find my flow and keep going, maybe I'll think it's garbage and leave it for the day. I never delete what I wrote, even if I hate it. Instead, I come back a day or two later and look it over with a fresh pair of eyes. Most of the time, I'll realize that it doesn't suck as bad as I thought it did.

Write something small! If my large WIPs seem too daunting atm, I'll try a microfic or drabble - something small and relatively low effort. Those also have the added bonus that I can yeet them out immediately after they're done, and the reactions I get usually give me the serotonin boost I need and motivate me to write more. (Bc I'm an attention whore like that! XD)

Let the brain run idle! I take a walk. I craft or doodle something. I play with my kid. I watch a movie or go out with friends. The main thing is, I don't write. I try to not even think of writing. That's often when my best ideas hit me out of nowhere.

🎨 If someone were to make fanart of your work, what fic or scene would you hope to see?

I am blessed enough to have a bunch of incredibly talented mutuals who have made so much wonderful, gorgeous, incredible art of my work. I look at it daily, it makes me feel so incredibly loved and cherished. I couldn't wish for more! That being said, if someone asked me, I'd probably pick for a scene from Someone who cares because that's my oldest fic (my baby, my firstborn, etc.) and it doesn't have any art yet.

Hope you're feeling better! I, personally, have been a bit dead to the world since late April. This past May was kinda odd, honestly. I think everyone I know and know of just. died for the month. Collectively. At once.

I actually wanted to slide in here and pick your brain about your ongoing Monster Mayhem stuff, if you're up for it? Just like a general status overview question, since I feel kinda out of the loop 😭 And also because I know that I tend to like talking about my feelings on my current wips, so I figured maybe you might too? If not, dw!

I'll put these in bullet points since it's kinda easier for me to organize my thoughts that way

Jack: I remember you saying awhile back that you expect Part 2 to be the final part. Is that still holding up, or does it feel like it'll be longer?

Rook: From the pacing, I'm getting the vibe that this one might be another 4 part story? mayhaps? Or maybe Rook isn't like the other girls TM and gets something different.

Vil: I haven't read this one yet, but I'm excited to sit down with it soon! What's the overall length/number of parts you're planning for at the moment?

I'm pretty sure this was asked at some point before, but what's your stance on epilogues? There has been... discussion. about a Leona epilogue before, I recall, but are you considering epilogues for all of them, or only specific characters?

What's like. your vibe, rn? With each of the stories? Like in terms of "I'm really feeling this, so I'm working on it and it might be posted in the nearish future, assuming no disasters" to like "I plan to continue this, but not rn. I've got a different worm chewing on the brain lettuce atm". Ik you literally just answered an ask similar to this, and said Leona part 4 & Vil part 2 are the one's you're focused on, so I guess this is more so geared towards the Jack and Rook ones? Or other stuff you're secretly planning. I have a vague memory of a "forgot your birthday" scenario that was on a poll a few months back

Also I. have a third Monster Mayhem Azul brainrot. It's not a fluffy one. If I can wrangle it into something more coherent, I may send it your way. Not dissimilar to the fashion of throwing a pebble at someone's window to get their attention, but accidentally putting a hole through the glass, and taking off running.

I'm gonna put this all under a little cut thing just because I feel like there's quite a lot! So here we go~

Jack -- It would still only be two parts I think! I only had short plans for that going forward, and it's currently at the bottom of my bucket list so to speak, not for any big reason just because Jack isn't one of my favorites so he falls behind on what I actually want to write.

Rook -- Was a bit more up in the air in terms of what I wanted to do. Had started writing a third part for it, but Rook's in particular felt very like, episodic? If that makes sense? Rather than an overarching cohesive arc. So I could write so much more little random side stories! But aside from a bit I had sort of planned regarding Riddle, there wasn't too much specific I had in mind.

Vil -- Probably one or two more parts to wrap up what I wanted with him; most likely one of the same length as the first. But that one of all of them may get a separate little piece because I am such a sucker for mermaids/sirens soooo that may get some special love

Epilogues -- bit of a mish mash. Really depends how I'm feeling tbh. If I want to write something, I'll word vomit like no one's business, but if I'm not overly invested then I probably won't bother writing one. But again

Vibe Check -- I’m absolutely wiped. Not with these stories, because I do genuinely love them. But like, back to back tough placements on top of illness is a trip. So I’m a bit more tired and less motivated than I normally am, just because most of my brain is chewing on actual school work and case reports and trying to not make myself look like an idiot every time I’m asked for a diagnosis list and go “uuuuhhhhhhhh.” But! I have some brain worms. Right now — big thing I’m working on is the second half of a very long commission. Which is loads of fun but also there’s so much to chew over there, so that takes a lot of my brain. On the side, I was really also writing my Vil Siren Part 2. Because that’s also a lot on the brain and it’s very different Vibe to the commission, so like it’s a good one to go back and forth between depending on what mood I’m in. Jamil is also very On My Brain right now oddly enough. I think because I read a short little Naga piece a while ago and it reminded me how much I love them. So that's on my brain a lot. As for the others, Jack has sorta fallen to the wayside admittedly. Mostly because I adore him as a Bro, but he’d just not usually a character my brain swoons over, so he’s sort of just… existing. I also wasn’t entirely sure where I wanted to go with that other than just “oh wow we fixed it together!” And that’s a factor too. As for other things, the birthday one comes back and forth depending on my mood, but idk if that’ll ever go up. I have lots of it written, but not enough to post or really toss together straight away. If that makes sense

oh l o r d i'm working on. a number of different WIPs tbh lies down they're all tcr-related atm tho. but if i narrowed them down to those which i intend to Finish and most likely publish at some point, we end up with uhhh. five?? five fics lies down

this is going to be a long ramble isn't it let me just preemptively throw down a readmore i'm so sorry

a condensed history of natori's career in the kingdom of cats

aka the 'young natori and cat king meet and Hate Each Other' fic jfifeoa honestly just an excuse for me to write out my headcanons on how they met, their early relationship, natori's family, and the cat king's childhood/family/Issues lmao. the third chapter is so close to being Done, but the fourth and fifth are. Not. so once that third chapter is posted, i'm not sure how long the wait for the next two will be rip

my favorite thing about it is probably just. idk, getting to explore those headcanons i'm attached to, aha. also getting to write natori in a lot of different ways i don't normally get to Here is fun

a much shorter post-canon fic in which the cat king comes down with a cold and makes it everyone else's problem. it's. well. Not Particularly Close to being finished, but i at least have an idea of where it's going rip

my favorite thing is that it gave me the opportunity to write natori uttering the line 'sire, if you make me hand-feed your own cold medicine, it will not be as sensuous as you're clearly expecting it to be' jfieoa

an excuse plot involving yuki's wedding attire and natori's sewing skills which exists only bc i wanted to write them interacting with each other rip

it's somewhat close to being done. there's little patches here and there which need to be filled in, and the ending is still eluding me lmao. my favorite thing tho is honestly just getting to write for yuki and delve into my own ideas about her, aha, especially after canon wraps up. also love the idea of natori (and probably natoru, too) sharing embarrassing baby stories about lune with her

i've actually posted this one before on my fic blog, but it was unfinished. i posted it anyway bc i was So Tired of looking at it, i just wanted to sort of wash my hands of it rip now it's been some time and i've been looking at it again like. 'u know maybe i have the motivation to finish this now that i'm not Sick Of It'

wheezes okay last one the fic i keep bringing up which basically amounts to 'i wonder how much suffering i can dump on my favorite character before i feel bad.' the answer is A Fuckn Lot. natori being kept alive after what's for all intents and purposes a coup bc one particular noble took a not easy to define interest in him. it's ended up way frickn longer than i intended it to but i've had a lot of. well. maybe not fun, exactly, but Something Positive while writing it despite its bleak tone oof

it's inching closer to being finished rip my favorite thing about it is without a doubt getting to indulge not only in my love for Despair but also getting to write natori reacting in ways which i hope are maybe. somewhat surprising considering his usual demeanor and such, aha he literally gets into what amounts to a physical fight in this fic ok that's kind of hilariously unfitting

What is that one scene that you’ve always wanted to write but can’t be arsed to write all of the set-up and context it would need? (consider this permission to write it and/or share it anyway)

there’s some ideas i have that fall under this category tbh-- that one idea i’ve brought up involving a groundhog day loop, where haru figures out she’s been living the cat kingdom day over and over again and can’t remember Why. she and the bureau, when she eventually gets them involved again, come to the conclusion it’s the cat king’s doing, and that he’s doing it to get his own way (tho they also find that conclusion kind of odd, considering he didn’t seem particularly broken up about how it all went down by the end of it)

of course. as i’m so. Wont to do rip the ultimate reveal would be that it was natori who had been behind the time loop, bc i have this story idea nicknamed ‘tfw u realize how things worked out in canon was the good end’

the basic idea is that natori was offered the opportunity to redo That Particular Day in order to alleviate some of the damage, but his efforts caused an even worse ending to the fiasco, and so now he’s been redoing it over and over again trying to get it Back On The Right Track. more than likely whatever creature gave him the original opportunity knew this would happen

bc i love the groundhog day loop trope to pieces, and i also love a good skirting too close to the despair event horizon fjioaef

i also have this random desire to write baron interacting with natori in that one ‘organized crime dark comedy’ idea i brought up once, where yuki is the cat king’s daughter and lune is the hapless ditz who fell in love with her, got all mixed up in the family business, and now is in too deep and not digging it lmao mostly bc i just have this vivid Idea of natori being just. profoundly two-faced in a conversation with someone who can send that polite, ambiguous energy right back at him lmao (bc i had the thought that, much like canon, natori is the one technically running everything. but in this case, it’s a good deal more Sinister, and his meticulously crafted bearing is quite brittle and wan in the right light)

How would you describe your writing process?

lies down scattered and capricious are two words which come to mind i'm too laid-back and lack the discipline to write on a legit schedule or when i'm not Feeling It, and my attention can sometimes flit from one WIP to the next in just a matter of half an hour (if not less rip)

it's also frustratingly easy for me to get burned out on an idea or a fic, which is part of the reason i usually have so many different WIPs going on at once orz

I haven’t actually worked on anything recently, and I haven’t worked on this particular fic in over a month because I got busy with other things. But this is probably my favorite wip atm.

[Simon’s pov]

“What happened in here?” Baz asks, a little warily.

I sit up quickly. I didn’t even hear him come in. I look up at him, and his expression is amused as he looks around at all the crumpled up pages scattered across the floor and the couch around me.

I was going to clean it up before he got home, but I thought he’d at least last another half hour on this date. I try not to be messy in the living space, worried that he’ll kick me out for being a terrible roommate. Things just got a little out of hand tonight.

My heart is racing as I hurry to pick up some of the papers, but not because I’m worried about him getting upset. No, I’m more worried about him seeing what’s on the pages.

“Sorry for the mess,” I mumble. “I was working on a class assignment, and nothing seemed to be turning out right.”

He picks up some of the papers, and I’m just about to tell him that it’s fine, he doesn’t have to help, when he starts to open one, smoothing out the page against his leg.

I have to stop him before he can see what it is that I’ve been working on. (Would it be suspicious if I ripped it out of his hand?)

I move towards him, ready to stop him, but it’s too late. As I get closer I can see that, luckily, it looks like a page of sketches of random facial features. I guess of all of the papers he could have picked up, that’s probably the best one.

“These don’t look too bad,” he says.

“They’re not right. I have this image in my head of what I want, but I can’t seem to get it right.” I tear a hand through my hair for probably the millionth time tonight.

“Why don’t you work on something else?”

“I can’t. I can’t focus on anything else until I get this image out of my head.”

“Is there anything I can do to help?”

I bite my lip. There is actually one thing that he could do, but I can’t ask him to do that.

“What if I were your model?” He asks, suggesting just what I wanted.

“Oh, no. I couldn’t possibly ask you to do that.”

“You don’t have to ask. I’m offering.”

“I—.”

“No protesting. It’s the least I can do after you’ve wasted so much listening to me complain about my terrible dates.”

4. How many fic ideas are you nurturing right now? Care to share one of them?

I always have several plot lines floating around my head at any given time, but I never know whether to classify them as real plot lines (or as I would call them, “solid”) or not because they’re more snippets I could theoretically write or things I need to try to figure out than actual fics with even a tiny plot I actively plan on writing. So by my definition it would technically be zero ideas rn but by others’ definitions (and if I kicked my own butt into gear) it could be as many as five or so. I have one or two ideas that are more ahead of the game than the others in terms of likelihood of me writing them, but I’m currently wracking my brain for an actual plot for them too.

(Sometimes I consider taking requests or suggestions because of the periods I go through where I have more floating ideas than solid fic, but I’m actually kinda picky about the types of fic I like to write and when, so I worry about whether I’d reject any suggested prompts, OTL.)

Anyway, a front-runner idea rn is writing bits of the Modern World Trio AU but in a semi-cohesive way. Or at least with a series of small scenes. I don’t have a lot of solid thoughts for scenes atm though. I’m also always thinking of different ways one of the Awakening Trio jumps/gets thrown off the Bottomless Canyon Bridge (and one of the royals sees/finds out for angst purposes) but have yet to settle on one idea in particular. 

And maybe something Niles focused? I haven’t done a ton of him when writing Leo Squad OT3 so I’ve been thinking about a scene with a little more him than Leo, but nothing too cohesive yet. (And I always have fic that sits in the back of my mind that I have yet to write or build a more solid plot for, like Dangerously Sick Fic or more Immortal Trio AU fic, though I’m not sure where I’d go with that besides more injuries, though I do like writing those.)

13. What’s the best writing advice you’ve ever come across?

Definitely write for yourself. There are/have been times when I don’t write things because I worry what the audience reaction will be or what people who might follow me for a certain type of content might say/think. But honestly! There have been times when I wrote what I wanted to write anyway, even though I was embarrassed or didn’t think anyone would write it. And you know what? Those fics fell into two categories: A. It was really well liked and I was surprised and really glad to have written it, or B. It was one of my less popular fics but the people who did leave comments went out of their way to say they really enjoyed it (often in an above-and-beyond way) and I was surprised and glad to have written those fics too! So it was always worth it either way, because I was always happy in the end! And writing self-indulgent things is the best feeling! So definitely worry less about what content appeals to others and think more about what content appeals to yourself. Because I guarantee somebody out there is into the exact same really specific idea you are. 

37. Talk about your current wips.

I have a couple different unfinished fics that are theoretically WIPs but I think they’re all on the back-burner for now until I get more inspiration/motivation for them, even though they’re not long or are nearly finished, sadly.

The only “active” WIP I think I currently have is a really nsfw FE fic, actually. Which I was really embarrassed about mentioning or even thinking about posting until I answered question 13 just now and some of my shame melted away a bit. (I’m not embarrassed at the idea of nsfw content and often enjoy reading it, but I know I typically don’t write it, so I get a little worried people don’t see me as the type of author who would write it/other nsfw fics I’ve written in FE at least had a semblance of plot and this is just porn/etc. I get easily nervous or worried about a lot of things that don’t matter very much, actually.)

But!! That’s actually a dumb thought and I’m feeling more confident now after writing that advice answer. Because even if I am embarrassed, somebody else probably will enjoy it too and even if not, I’ve written it for me at the very least. 

Sometimes it is hard to follow your own advice, but sometimes you just gotta go for it too! So if anybody else ever feels embarrassed about something they’re trying to write, you can be embarrassed with me and write your fic/original content anyway!
