The entire point of this charming déshabillé, or sleeping gown, is obviously not the clothes, at all, but the skin, and the hairstyle and the change of makeup (no colour on the lips).

The outer layer is this dark greenish-blue dévoré that might be sort of transparent.

That scene is in episode 18, but we have actually seen this garment before, in episode 16, for a nightmare. With orderly hair, normal lip colour, and a better view of what looks like an inner layer - it might be velvet, but it looks more like one of those super soft silks with a slight nap, and the satiny edging might possibly be the other side of the same fabric.

It's mixed in, there, with early appearances of the Honey-Coloured Gown, so it contributes a bit to our sense of the character softening.

Back to episode 18, in the scene with Xunfeng we can see that the liquid silver is not really an inner layer at all, but a sort of scarf, and we also see what look like trousers with ... maybe gold polka dots?

And also the gown has a geometric pattern on the left breast, which might be a painted landscape. I'd love to have a better view of this. Super pretty, and it seems to be a lovely midnight blue, somehow merging into the deep blue-green in the shadows. It seems like a quite different fabric from the other side, so I don't know what's going on here.

Either way, the delicious textures are chosen to suggest to the mind how they would feel against the skin, thereby drawing attention to the skin. Which is the point of the scene really, so that's about it. I mean, you can talk about the plot, but even that mostly boils down to "he wants attention and gets it" and with this, we're already there.

Love Between Fairy and Devil spoilers.

Just thinking about all the times that Dongfang Qingcang and Xiao Lanhua tried to out-care and out-sacrifice for each other is giving me MAJOR whiplash.

DFQC: To help my people accept you as my queen, I will take on the Bone-eating Spikes. Suffering hours are midnight till dawn every night for an unspecified amount of time.

XLH: To prove that I deserve to stay by your side as your queen, I’ll stay in the Fuju cave for three days. I know you said in its whole history, only you made it out alive, but… no worries, I got this. :)

DFQC: Fine, I’ll allow this, but ONLY because I want to respect your choices and show that you’re my equal in this relationship. That’s the only reason why I would even consider this.

XLH: Thank you. Now…drink this substance so that you won’t feel any of the pain with me. I’ll suffer like hell for three days BY MYSELF, you hear?

DFQC: You fool, I’ll never drink this. *spits gracefully* I’m going to feel all the suffering with you because we gonna be hubby and wifey. xoxo

XLH: Aww… okay then let’s get married ASAP before the big war because I want to officially be your wife and go through all your tribulations with you too ❤️

DFQC: Fuk… but the Bone Orchid is slowly killing you. But it’s okay, I’ll just kill my own heart by acting like I played you and make you hate me and stop loving me. I’ll make a pact with the literal god of all evil instead to free my 100,000 soldiers. You’re free to go now, stay safe fam.

XLH: You fool, but I never stopped loving you. I’m going to stab myself with this sword instead to free you from our curse and save all your friends. Boom. Ttyl.

DFQC: Fine. I’ll just raise your spirit seed until you literally resurrect into a goddess. I’ve done this before (taken care of you and nursed you back to health) so I’m basically an orchid expert now.

XLH: Fine, but when I come back, I’ll pretend I don’t remember you so that I can protect you from the fact that I’ll sacrifice myself again, to kill the evil god.

DFQC: Yeah but I figured out what you’re trying to do. So I decided I’m going to literally change your entire destiny because ily. *kisses then vanishes*

XLH: But when the evil god is consuming you and all of the realms’ immortals and armies need to use all their power to hold you back, I’m going to walk towards you by myself because I can 100% take care of this sacrifice on my own, thanks tho!

DFQC: No no, we’re good. I already trapped him in my Heart Sea. Can you just help me out a little bit by killing me so that I can get rid of this bane of existence for you?

XLH: But… it’s my destiny to save the world…

DFQC: But it’s my destiny to save you.

DFQC costumes master post

Some of the costumes in this show are doing a lot more than the basic functions of reflecting the characters' tribal allegiance, social roles and status, or current activity. Especially Dongfang Qingcang's costumes are doing a lot more than this: they're suggesting or reinforcing ideas about the character's state of mind. I loved this about it, I noticed it a lot, and I want to talk about it.

Someone put a lot of work into imagining, designing, and making these clothes, and since I can't read Mandarin I don't know who those people are, but I want to point out some parts of their work I appreciated.

Assumptions: in this genre the clothes aren't supposed to behave like real clothing - the whole point of them is to be artistic drapery, to carry meaning and feeling and beauty. Any resemblance to real clothes of any location or period is purely an artistic reference. Their effects in telling the story rely on the viewer's own experience and whatever associations her mind draws from the visual elements provided. What I draw from them with my Western eye, informed by Western art history (including its relationship with Chinese arts and crafts made for export), is going to miss all the things that rely on Chinese art history and culture for specific meanings and associations. On the other hand, I'm going to see parallels, and maybe make accidental or wrong associations, that might be interesting and entertaining.

These are the costumes I want to write about. So this is my listing post, and then I'll edit these and make them links as I go along. The list might change.
