Niche Cryptids #3: Mongolian Death Worm
This is a fun one! The Mongolian Death Worm, or, olgoi-khorkhoi, is a large, three foot long red worm creature said to live somewhere in the sands of the southern Gobi Desert. It sprays a corrosive fluid strong enough to kill, but can also give off a strong electrical discharge to stun its victims. Hate that! The worm has existed in local folklore for many years and while there's many verbal accounts passed down of its existence, scientists and cryptozoologist enthusiasts have never been able to find any traces in the vast desert. Some think maybe this legend can be contributed to legless lizards or snakes, as a number can be venomous or even spit substances long distances, but none quite fit the description of "meter-long red worm with barbs on either end that burrows like a Tremors monster and shoots acid and electricity at you". Then again, there's some spooky stuff out there! Just look at my big fav, the bobbit worm. Sometimes nature can be scarier than we think.
Thanks to my patrons for picking September's illustration prompt!!

I love my cryptids they make me so happy so what if there's a fucking massive worm in the middle of the gobi desert wouldn't that just be so cool??? shouldn't we just leave it alone forever???? wouldn't a team of scientists go on a controversial mission to go document it????? and then go missing???? become cryptids themselves??? ugh love them <3

Cryptid of the Week: Mongolian Death Worm
All in all, it's a giant worm that lives in the Gobi desert. Some accounts give it acid or venom that it uses to hunt its prey-- humans and livestock-- and some accounts even give it powers of electroshock. Its size seems to differ depending on the account.
If something about this seems familiar-- well. Tremors and Dune have their own versions of the Mongolian Death Worm, and the Krayt Dragons from Star Wars seem pretty similar, too (not to mention the Alaskan Bull Worm from Spongebob).
In recent years many have tried to find proof that this monster exists, some speculating that it might be a worm lizard or the Tartar Sand Boa. Still, whether it's real or not, there hasn't been hard proof of its existence.
As the X-Files puts it... the truth is out there

According to legend, the dreaded Mongolian Death Worm — which local people call olgoi-khorkhoi or loosely translated, "large intestine worm" — has lived up to its name. It can kill in several fearsome ways, including spitting a stream of corrosive venom that is lethal to anything it hits, and if that doesn't do the trick it is said to be able to electrocute its victims from a distance.
Rarely seen and never photographed, it was mentioned in a 1926 book by paleontologist Roy Chapman Andrews, who didn't believe in the animal's existence but noted that stories of it circulated in Mongolia.

Welp absolutely no one asked but it’s Fun Fact Friday and I’m about to go to bed, so Today You Learned about the Mongolian Death Worm!
Tumblr media
Ew.
So in 1926, Roy Chapman Andrew discussed in his book stories about a killer worm thing in the Gobi Desert. Apparently everyone is terrified of it, and it’s so poisonous that touching it will kill you. Some time later, some guy (Ivan Mackerle) proposed that maybe it could shoot venom, or maybe it could produce electricity, like an electric eel?
Yeah, it’s weird.
After that, the story sort of spun out, but mostly from Western sources claiming this was an ancient Mongolian thing. Several expeditions were mounted, but no one’s ever found the darn thing. There were supposedly several sightings by locals, but hardly any hard evidence.
Cryptozoologists go nuts over this thing, though.
