The Spymaster's transparent disguises and the Master's true self.

In a behind-the-scenes documentary about The Power of the Doctor, "Behind the Regeneration," Sacha Dhawan explains his interpretation of the Master, which I have trascribed for your edification and pleasure. You're welcome.

He says:

We were really intent on making sure that we raise the bar even higher by introducing more characters, more versions of the Master. And it made me think that maybe the audience hadn't quite seen my Master, as it were. And I'm still questioning at the end of the episode -- have you still seen the real him? There's maybe moments where he shows his real self, but kind of getting into that and thinking about that opened up loads of opportunities.

I think one of the things that I was really intent on is that, whatever kind of version of the Master I was playing, I was totally committed to it. So even though there's a similar vein going through all of them, I wanted each one of them to be distinctly different. You know -- he's a master of disguise. And he really embodies those characters, and it was really good fun to play. But in terms of preparation, I did a lot of prep trying to, yeah, make them different and understand each of their intentions, as it were.

But, even saying that, I was also interested in exploring maybe when the mask slips. Then you do see the real him. I can take aspects of what we've done and almost reinvent him again. I think that's one of the things I wanted to do.

And if I ever continue playing the Master, I'm going to continue doing it: constantly taking strands and reinventing them, keeping the audience guessing, keeping them on their toes, keeping them excited. And that's the real joy I get from it, as long as it's truthful.

This is a fascinating mini-essay. Sacha Dhawan's question -- "Have you still seen the real him?" -- seems to serve as a thesis.

The next paragraph, where he talks about the Spymaster's personae, emphasizes an apparent disconnection between the Spymaster's disguises and who he is undisguised. Each persona is "distinctly different." Sacha Dhawan describes "a lot of prep" understanding each persona and "their intentions" in the way that an actor would prepare for several separate and different roles.

But the Spymaster's personae are not separate roles, not as far as the actor is concerned. "There's a similar vein going through all of them," he asserts and then doubles down on his concept of the Spymaster behind the roles: "I was also interested in exploring maybe when the mask slips. Then you do see the real him."

Sacha Dhawan plays the Spymaster as a character of many aspects, roles, and disguises, but he does think that there's a core character, a "real him," beneath or within all the roles. "I can take aspects of what we've done and almost reinvent him again. ...And that's the real joy I get from it, as long as it's truthful," he says. Here the reinvention refers to the variety of forms the Master takes, but it's not a truly free, untethered reinvention, at least not how Sacha Dhawan sees the character. He talks about "tak[ing] aspects of what we've done" or building on his previous performances and the character's past personae. His caveat "as long as it's truthful" points to his belief that the Master does have a true self, and he ensures in his performances that, no matter how diverse the disguises, they reveal, rather than conceal, the Master's core.

This is consonant with my interpretation of the Master as an emotionally transparent individual who is constitutionally incapable of mastering how they feel. They're governed by their emotions [toward the Doctor], which they can never hide. Their disguises always allow their feelings to stream through. The disguises are all see-through. In fact, they reveal some aspect of the Master.

He smiles and nods, approving of her conclusion and admiring her brains. Furthermore, even though the Spymaster doesn't really do standard eye contact, he makes some with Yaz here. He's really interested in her.

I’m sure you guys would send me asks if i ever reblogged one of those writing memes but most of the time i wouldn’t know how to answer most of the questions. so, this is not about you not being a supportive audience. this is about me being a faint-hearted squirrel.

 1: what are you currently working on? 

the next chapter of my Sherlock fan fic. (no really. for once in my life i’m actually making some progress - that is, whenever i’m not on tumblr lol) as well as editing some of the already posted chapters for when i’m finally going to update the thing.

i’ve also started a Doctor Who fix it. which is coming along really slowly.

2: summarize your current project 

it’s been YEARS and i still can’t come up with a better summary than the one i posted on ao3:

“A kidnapped teenage girl. A political conspiracy. Bees. And somehow in the midst of it all, John learns a few things Sherlock forgot to mention about those two years.“

But really, i also get to explore a few things about John’s past. and Sherlock’s pre-series past. IF you want to read it, please feel free to contact me, because the version on ao3 comes with a couple of mistakes i’m getting rid of the moment i’m posting the next chapter! (i don’t want to edit them now because i don’t want people to get a notification, thinking i’ve posted the next chapter only to find i did some minor edits). AND YES, I KNOW I HAVEN’T UPDATED THAT FIC FOR YEARS. I’ve been busy.

for my DW fix it:

The universe is ending, but that’s the least of the Doctor’s problems.  (I need you to understand that the universe ending is literally the subplot in this one!)

Yeah, i need to work on that summary. Basically, I want to re-write some of the plot of the Flux story arc, and, while being at it, i’m also changing a few bits and pieces about the Timeless Child.

3: summarize your current project poorly 

A crime fighting graduate chemist and an ex-army doctor team up to stop a political conspiracy involving bees. (Am I doing this right?)

The Doctor, Yaz and the Master investigate the Division and happen to save the universe in the process. They also bring back Gallifrey by accident. The Master is not happy about this.

4: describe your favorite character or characters

HOW AM I EVEN SUPPOSED TO CHOOSE? (like, this is exactly why i hardly ever post writing ask memes). Let’s do something else instead: describe why you’re looking forward to writing your project:

BBC Sherlock: series 3 just doesn’t find the time to deal with a lot of interesting topics which could be turned into a nice little story (Moran, the aftermath of The Empty Hearse, why does Sherlock volunteer to help with the wedding preparations, i want to tackle Sherlock and Mary’s friendship in general, also Mary and Janine’s. Sherlock and Mycroft’s. And i’ve always wanted to write a case fic involving bees).

DW: how did the Master go from Missy’s redemption arc to destroying Gallifrey? What did he do during those 77 years on Earth? Just the Doctor and the Master’s complicated past (and future?). Yaz. Ruth!Doctor. Time Lord Telepathy. Australia. Lizards (like, actual lizards).

5: post a line from your current project without any context 

BBC Sherlock: Sherlock had shown him a glimpse of the dark secrets holding the threads of the universe, the ugly, elemental puzzle pieces of human nature which, any later, Sherlock would have been too self-conscious to trust him with. 

DW: For a moment the world dips into golden star dust and she does her best not to think of endings and beginnings.

6: how do you get through writers block?

depends on what’s causing it. but these days i usually switch projects and work on my other fic instead. sometimes, going through my ao3 bookmarks and revisiting some old favourites help.

7: would you want to live in the world of your current work? 

BBC Sherlock: no, there are already enough political conspiracies in this one, thank you very much.

DW: a hard no! i know i said it was a sub-plot, but the universe *is* literally ending.

8: briefly discuss your outlining process, if you outline 

i don’t actually write an outline. but i have a pretty good idea of where i want my story to go and what i need to deal with in the next chapters to get there.

9: what is the aesthetic of your current project 

BBC Sherlock: at times dark, at times light and sparkly but always soft. much softer than the show (while still very much dealing with torture. like. i literally wrote a torture scene, which is probably the hardest thing i’ve ever done and hopefully ever will do. 0/10. wouldn’t recommend). does emotional closure count as an aesthetic? no? it should.

DW: i know hurt/comfort isn’t an aesthetic BUT it should be. maybe cottage core in space?

10: what song sums up your current work the best?

Your comic about the protective mom telling the fairies to stay away from her brown daughter has some great implicit commentary on the insidious adultification of Black girls, as well as the equally harmful belief that Black women = saviors! It makes a clever comic that much more powerful and poignant.

Omigod i had absolutely no intention of this when i drew/wrote the comic but im glad you can see it as such! And you're so right!! More black girl characters who can be soft and delicate and protected, less black girl characters who are tough and mean and the protectors!

SUPER important headcanon about “rehabiliated,” “redeemed” Master  from talking to @modernwizard​ who is a fucking genius:

She's talking about how her Alison Cheney and Shalka Master interact in her fanfictions, referring to it as “nonsexual kink,” for context: 

ModernWizardToday at 1:32 PM She uses the kinky ideals of discussion and respect and safewords and negotiation as a way to frame her relationship with him. "You want me to interact with you? Then follow my standards." 

 ModernWizardToday at 1:33 PM He chooses to submit to her because he asserts his independence from the Doctor by actively making that choice.[1:40 PM]

So here is the idea i draw from that: the Master interacts with companions, choosing to be conciliatory and courteous ("submissive" in his pov) to them because to do so is an act of benign but definite independence from the Doctor (his reliance on the Doctor as a defining factor of his identity has always chafed him, and even more so now with the Timeless Child mess).

  That act of independence is  making a friend with one of the Doctor's companions, an emotional bond, a relationship, which is not contingent on the Doctor's approval, but rather, on the Companion's "rules" of interaction.  

Therefore, an act of submission becomes an act of defiance and autonomy, allowing him to maintain his identity of “Master” but in a way that’s benevolent and respectful toward another person! 

Another key element: NO Master requires that a black or other POC muse refer to him as “Master.”  “M,” “O,” or “Koschei,” depending on the Master and the level of closeness with the companion, is instead used.  Because even if the BBC doesn’t recognize this (see Simm Master and the Jones family), it’s got hella problematic real-life implications.

Hoping to make this a productive day--have a load of laundry in the washing machine, have applied lime green dye over some of the turquoise streaks in my hair (hoping for aqua/light teal results), and when the washing machine is done it will be time to rinse the dye.  Then, another load of laundry and get back to cutting out The Child’s Shrek Shirt, which I should be able to complete today if I keep at it.  And I may or may not try a baking experiment today, too.  And the dishwasher needs to be emptied.

But we all know it’s just as likely I’ll spend most of the day on Tumblr.

félix is another great headsculpt by my encanto 3d buddy at www.etsy.com/shop/3DPrintedGifting ! i painted him up pretty simply, and added faux-fur fabric hair. i have had his shirt for ages -- @dollsahoy of course!

félix' body was a whole drama because i had to shorten his legs by more than an inch and those old playline star wars figures are REALLY FRIKIN STURDY. i managed it AND gave him thigh rotation, though, so i am proud. will have to show him dancing one day to show it off :D

Adam Young was meant to be the Anti-Christ. His entire purpose was to cause the end of the world. In many ways, he was the Chosen One, albeit for a rather dark path. But he was raised completely human and normal, without any unusual expectations of him beyond being a regular boy. He remained unaware of his heritage or destiny until the very end. And though he was chosen, he did not accept his role and rejected it and his connection to Lucifer.

Warlock Dowling was not chosen. He was born as an ordinary child, with no special skills or powers. He should have lived an average life. But he was raised with certain Expectations. Occult and ethereal entities Expected him to be the Anti-Christ. He was not chosen or fated for such a role, but reality tends to bend a little when angels and demons have Expectations.

The apocalypse may have been averted, but not everyone is relieved. Heaven and Hell may not believe that they can execute the traitors, but they also cannot let Aziraphale and Crowley go unpunished. Unfortunately for them, two not-quite-so-normal boys have some rather strong opinions on the topic.
