Ooh may I ask about Unraveled? 👀
Yeah!
So, Unraveled is a high fantasy epic with contemporary elements. The main cast is a group of college students who find themselves wrapped up in the apocalypse when the loveable himbo of the group accidentally frees an ancient god and becomes his “prophet.”
It’s a story I love because it lets me flex my worldbuilding skills (I often think of it as my love letter to the works of Tolkien) while also being a story about characters who are very down to earth. They’re so much like me and my friends in that they deal with all the normal young adult things— picking a major, fighting with your parents, self-discovery, etc.
There’s a lot of different kinds of disability in the main cast, both mundane and magical, and I really love getting to think about what kinds of accessibility aids there are in this world. The blending of magic and technology is so interesting to me, and it goes perfectly with this world.
This main cast is one of my favorites because there’s never a dull moment with them despite the fact that there’s rarely a huge amount of action that they’re directly involved in. They’re very much academics through and through, not frontline soldiers. But there’s also always something going on. There are curses and fights and miscommunications and love. So much love, both romantic and platonic. I don’t think it would even be possible to write this story with characters who don’t unconditionally and recklessly love each other til the very end.
And the fun fact is that if I were to make an animatic about these characters, it would be to Carry On Wayward Son by Kansas. I’d find a way to make it really angsty, I promise.

happy blorbo blursday! I'd love to hear some rambles about some of your disabled characters, whoever's on your mind! as a disabled writer it always makes me so happy to see disability rep :D
Let’s GO I love talking about them! Also it’s disability pride month and talking about rep is important, so this was a great ask ❤️
So, creating the character of Trevor is very different from what I normally do. Basically, I realized that I’d never written about a wheelchair user, ever, and said “oh fuck, well that has gotta change” and committed to giving the next OC I ever worked on a wheelchair. It was a few weeks after that that a friend of mine and I started working on a story concept together, and between the two of us, I was given basically free reign over characters and concept art. So I immediately did several drawings of Trevor in his chair, did some research on reasons a person may need mobility aids, and went to my friend the next day and said “here he is.” That’s the story. That’s where he came from. And since then, he’s become one of my favorites to think about. He’s so much fun and adds a lot to the comedic tone of the story by being a very upbeat and relaxed guy in complete contrast to his nervous and frantic best friend (essentially it’s one guy who is stuck in a cosmic horror story but all of his friends think it’s a chill slice of life). He does have platform crutches, but he doesn’t use them much. He has a pet cat.
A lot of my characters are ND, like. A lot. I don’t even know where to begin listing them all. I am very emotionally attached to every OC I’ve ever had, but I will pick Joshua to talk about a bit here. He has ADHD, he exclusively wears rainbow socks, and he works in a chill little magic bookstore. He’s struggling but he is so loved by his family, his boss, his friends, and he does alright. He has magic abilities that are very unique from the other characters.
I’m still working on worldbuilding for this story, so none of the characters have names yet, but I have one WIP where a good chunk of the main cast is disabled. The protagonist is a double amputee, and one of her friends designed customs prosthetics for her. One of her friends is Hard of Hearing. Another (the protag’s platonic soulmate) is, now that I think about it, probably ADHD? I didn’t have that in mind when coming up with the character, but it would be a valid interpretation of him. He also has this… supernatural thing going on that could be compared to chronic pain and fatigue; I normally dislike the chronic illness rep only being a “curse” or a spell or something, and don’t usually write that kind of thing, but I think it works here partially because this world doesn’t shy away from accommodations and disability already, and we see evidence of that in the main cast. Were he the only one in an otherwise abled group, I probably wouldn’t write this the same. That would feel like a trope to me. (That’s not to say that magic can’t be used as a good metaphor, I’m a huge fan of how The Owl House handles Eda’s curse, I just don’t trust myself not to handle it badly.)
I mentioned for another Blorbo Blursday an unnamed character who I think I referred to as Francis for that post? He belongs here as well, being non-speaking autistic. Just thinking about the magical AAC devices that he has access to make me happy. I’m not the kind of person who wants to write a ton about hardships and struggles; disability is hard, it’s disabling (duh), but that doesn’t mean that all disabled people are living in straight up misery 24/7, and I want to include representation of people who do get the accommodations they need, who are loved and supported, who get to be heroes in both big and small ways. Francis struggles a lot. He has a lot of support needs. But he also has joy. I want the reader to always remember that he has joy.
I don’t always do the best job when it comes to representing groups I’m not a part of. I know this, because it will always be true that im not perfect. But im trying really hard, and I really care about these characters. And I hope that someday, other people will care about them too. ❤️

happy blorbo blursday! which of your ocs' character arc are you most excited to write? :D
Ooo this is such a hard question!
Okay so I have two. Both of them are unnamed officially but I’ve been calling one Percy in my head for a while, and let’s call the other Francis for the sake of this post.
Percy is, really, just… a guy who’s facing a lot of changes in his life all at once. There isn’t some dramatic thing that happens to him, it’s just a lot of little things all at once. And I like to think that an audience would be excited to go on that journey with him. Percy also provides a way to get some worldbuilding exposition into the story without info-dumps, since he’s just moved to a new place, is learning a couple of languages, and is starting a new career. I personally like him because I’ve been in the same situation for the majority of my life with very little change, and pretty soon things are going to do a complete 180, so having a character who’s going through that is neat. He gets it.
Francis is different from any character I’ve seen in fantasy before (but if anyone has any recommendations please tell me!). He’s nonverbal and autistic, and you don’t see a lot of representation that doesn’t fall on the same stereotypes and tropes. Normally nonverbal character are young children who are burdens on their families, and often there’s some kind of miraculous “cure” for all their issues. The plot often revolves around them being able to speak by the end, or at least no longer being a “problem”. Like. Fuck that. Francis is a protagonist, he has a love interest, he has a magic AAC device. Obviously he struggles with things, but so does everyone else. Just because his needs are different does not make him worth less. And while his character arc is inherently tied to his disability, because it’s undeniably a part of who he is, his arc is not about his disability. Francis is, in some ways, more competent than the other protagonists of the story. And he’s funny as hell; I haven’t written anything for him, but like the idea of him getting to have a good sense of humor. Until I have more writing finished about him, I can’t accurately explain what I want his story to be like, but I do wish we had more characters like him. I just hope I don’t fuck it up.

Does anyone have songs that are similar in style to The Crane Wives and The Amazing Devil and that specifically invoke the feelings of a summer road trip, a tragic romance, a fight with your sister, fucked up love stories, and analog media? I’m making a playlist for a WIP and need ideas.

Hello, hi, happy Blorbo Blursday! :D I'd love to hear a Keeva ramble! they sound absolutely lovely from the lil bio I read and I have decided I would die for them already!
Aaaa I didn’t see this last week, sorry!
Keeva seems to be a favorite for the maybe five people who’ve acknowledged my work ahdhahdjajd I can’t blame yall, I love them too.
Who they were originally supposed to be was a lot more suave than they ended up being. Think of like, the love interest of an action movie. But the more I wrote, the more that just didn’t work, yknow? Their twin sister, Aoife, fits that role a lot better, and even then it’s still not what I originally had in mind. And, really, if the characters never change in the planning phase, it worries me more; rewriting Keeva’s (and everyone’s, really) arc made me put more thought into it that I would have if I took my original notes and never changed them.
I think part of what makes them easy for me to write is because a lot of what they say is what I wish people would say to me (Cassian is kinda a self-insert ahdjsjsks I can admit that), and also what I wish I could say for others. They’re really good at calling out bullshit, but like. Politely. And at pointing out all of your issues in a way that. Actually helps.
And a fun fact is that in their original character bio, the first thing I ever wrote for the story, Keeva has “dance” listed as a talent! We’ll see if that ever comes up again.

if all your ocs were to fight each other (you decide weapons and stakes), who'd be the first to lose?
This is hard because a lot of them are actually trained fighters and do fight each other canonically. But since it’s all my OCs from every project… probably Dominic? He’s literally just a random guy, he has no combat skills or magic. Everyone else is like a child soldier who can make him implode or shit. In a Hunger Games type setting he’d try and get some food and immediately be taken down from across the arena by literally anyone who managed to get a knife.
Also unrelated but literally every time I think about Dominic, his name changes. It definitely started with an M at one point but I forgot it. That’s how much of a normal, forgettable dude he is. I think he might have been called at least four different names at this point.

happy blorbo blursday! could you tell me a bit about your favourite side character, why they're your favourite, and yet why they're not a main character?
Oof this is a hard one.
So, my first instinct is Bethany. She’s a bit younger than all the other characters, she’s still figuring some things out, but the epilogue shows her having found herself a bit. Also her design is really fun. I actually did a bunch of drawings of her before coming up with her character, and once I finished all of that I realized… she just didn’t FIT in the main storyline, yknow? I didn’t know what to do with her. But I like the implication that she has her own story going on in the background. This story isn’t about her and was never going to be, but she is a protagonist in her own way. I think that when I can think of them that way, that’s how I know a side character is fleshed out enough.
But I really have to talk about an unnamed character from Unraveling that spends a lot of time on my mind. She’s unnamed partially because I’m still worldbuilding and don’t know how to name any of them, but basically I love her because she is, ultimately, the glue holding the main group together. The heart of the group isn’t the protagonist, it’s her. She’s a medic, she’s HOH (she has some cool fantasy hearing aids designed by a friend, who also designed some prosthetics for another character), she’s book smart but even more street smart, and she’s always there for everyone. The story doesn’t need to be about her for the story to be centered around her, yknow? Without her, it falls apart.
I don’t think the protagonist even appreciates her enough, really. Even just on the basic level of her being the medic, a really important member of the team, but also on the emotional and logical levels of coordinating and communicating. So much happens behind the scenes.
I don’t know, I just really like the idea of protagonists who aren’t the real driving force behind a story. If it wasn’t for the other characters, nothing works. I love writing about side characters who are arguably more important.

can i hear about Live Wire?
Yeah, so Live Wire is a sci-fi comedy/drama that contrasts two different groups of characters— the astronauts and the ground crew. It’s very slice of life, fluffy friendship, domestic dynamics, but with mortal peril and corruption in the background. It’s definitely a love letter to my favorite sci-fi stories, which usually have a lot of contrast between serious dangers and more cartoony worldbuilding.
And i think it was a great lesson for me in the area of originality, and specifically finding the balance between inspiration and copying. My earliest concepts included an AI character who was, I admit, a direct rip-off of Hera from Wolf 359. And, The thing is, even apart from the obvious plagiarism, the story genuinely just didn’t work with that character. I had no story to tell about an AI on a spaceship that hadn’t been done before. This character didn’t help the plot at all.
I ended up replacing her with a member of the ground crew in charge of communications. The entire plot grew out of that one change, because I hadn’t even considered mission control when writing characters before and now they’re vital to the story.
It’s a story about friendship across a great distance (like, a couple light years, distant), about connecting with those around you, about internal struggles, and also about facing down some sci-fi weirdness. The playlist I made for it is mostly indie stuff, very niche, and part of that is because I’m pretentious and part of it is because all of the characters are, too. And unlike most of my work, I’m not planning to have really any romance arc, even as a subplot? That’s obviously subject to change, but I don’t see any of these characters interacting that way.
I really like stories that split the action between multiple settings. I’m writing a couple right now, and this is one of them.

Keeva Orlathe: *exists
Me: oooh, friend shaped.
(I may have read their character bio and related just a bit too hard. Got a new comfort character and their name is Keeva.) Also, I made Jack Thorn exactly 6'3 as well and I'm wondering how that happened. And he's the anxious introverted one... what- how?
Bro this is by far the greatest ask I’ve ever gotten!!! Bestie I love you (platonic)
Idk just??? The idea that someone looked at my OC, the blorbo from my brain, and decided that they’re not only interesting but actually a comfort character??? THATS FRICKEN FANTASTIC AAAAA this made my day, thank you. The most thanks I can possibly bestow.
And on the topic of 6’3 anxious introverts… tall people being shy is like. My favorite thing. I think it’s a response to my tall friends all being loud and annoying (/j). I love tall dorks. More tall dorks.

Hello! Happy WBW!
What's life like for an ordinary person in your world? What would be considered an ideal life?
Well, obviously this varies by country, so I’ll talk about the unnamed continent in the northeast.
This country is somewhat isolated, so there’s definitely a lot of farming, and then that farming is heavily dictated by the climate (which is pretty cold). There’s a lot of livestock farming, so meat and dairy make up a good chunk of local foods. Wool and furs are pretty common for clothing. A lot of the architecture uses masonry, especially on the north and western sides of the country. Using lumber isn’t as common but you definitely see it some in the south.
A lot of people value modesty, and the popular clothing reflects that. Long shirts with sleeves, loose clothing, gloves, etc. (Which all also serve a practical purpose in a place that has a cooler climate) There’s also this idea of self-sufficiency and how that connects with what is considered polite. It would be rude to turn away a dinner guest, for example, but asking to come to someone’s house means that you can’t adequately care for yourself. Charity is highly valued because it means that you have extra, but it’s also a somewhat “weird” thing to do, because other people aren’t your problem. It’s good to give away wealth, but those who need the charity aren’t sympathized with at all. It builds a really strong hatred of anything perceived as laziness. (This setup helps with the story I’m writing in this setting, where a character who comes from wealth and still has it also has to accept being cared for by someone else.) There are a lot of “rules” around what is and isnt allowed, and where those rules apply. I think the one fun detail is that in any house, the servant has more freedom than the guest— the servants are working to take care of themselves and their families while the guests are not. It also makes “business trips” a really common excuse for people to go stay with friends, so naturally there’s an expectation for how much work you have to do before it’s considered a business trip. (Essentially I took the Regency era ideas of manners and etiquette and then made it worse and more obnoxious)
An ideal life would probably mean having enough money to where you don’t have to work, and then choosing a job you love because you will work anyway. Your employees are your equals, so the idea of hiring a lot of servants to do everything for you as if you’re more important is like… not the worst thing you could do, but it’s in bad taste. You still go out in your own field with the farmhands, you still go to the store to buy your own fabric even if you don’t sew the clothes, you paint your own walls when you want to redecorate. It’s also seen as a good goal to get out of the cities. That’s not to say that the cities are bad, they aren’t, but the idea of owning your own farm is very popular. It’s not even about owning a big farm, it just has to be big enough to support your family.
For the average person, this looks a lot like needing both a profitable job and financial literacy. You need to know how to budget. Education tends to be done through apprenticeships along with two or three years of more formal schooling in the middle. The idea is that you learn the actual trade you’re going into, then you spend a few years learning basic math and science, and then you spend the last few years of your apprenticeship learning about the business side of things. Other subjects like reading, writing, and history are usually taught at home. History is also spread a lot by things like songs, plays, and paintings. This adds a bit of fictionalization to every story, but it also makes the history an important part of the pop culture. If it’s important, there’s probably a song, and everyone seems to know them all. The proper etiquette is also something that would be picked up both at home and during the apprenticeship, and is also very important. Knowing which color outfits are acceptable at what event is valued just as highly as an education.
I also really, really love normalizing accessibility in my fantasy worlds, which is a very nuanced topic especially for this part of the world, but just know that I think about it a lot. One of the protagonists of the book I want to set in this country is autistic and non-speaking, and a lot of the book is just about… him going through his life. It’s very much not a story about ableism (even if this particular culture sounds like it would be kinda the worst. Trust me on this one). I would say that, while there’s not a lot of focus on which job someone does, those who make accessibility aids are seen as very important.

I'm a Pisces so I must ask. Tell me about Sea Level!
Sea Level is a sci-fi/fantasy story that essentially exists so I can indulge my favorite things in fiction, which include evil women, mermaids, and trans scientists.
The main plot centers around a private research facility where some quite fucked up science is going on. The protagonist is the new intern who has no idea what they’re walking into. I keep telling myself that if I actually sit down and write enough of the upsetting horror part then it will turn into a supernatural romance but that might be a stretch (this type of story calls for the slowest of burns). Some other characters include the oblivious secretary, the jaded assistant who should have read the fine print on his contract, and the head researcher (I wrote a whole post about Lana for a Blorbo Blursday ask about villains not too long ago, actually), and… the test subject. They’re going through world changing horrors some stuff.
The name Sea Level doesnt mean a whole lot other than they’re all on an island studying marine life and I also wanted to tie in the mermaid theme, so I just picked the first ocean-related phrase I could think of. It might change if I come up with something better.

The assassin and his moral compass sounds great, where can I read it? Can’t find a link on the intro page
It’s still a work in progress! I actually took a big hiatus for about a year, so it’s nowhere near finished. In its final form, it’ll probably have a different title, slightly different characters, and a more complex plot and setting.
My goal is to get it traditionally published once it’s done, which might be a few years from now (I learned a long time ago that achieving my dreams of publishing professionally as a teen isn’t gonna happen, for several reasons). If that doesn’t work out, I might serialize it, but that would mean changing up some of my plans for it as well.
I’ll make sure to keep you updated, though, if you’re really interested!

HAPPY STS!
What’s your favorite part of writing?
I don’t really think about writing while I’m doing it, it just sorta happens, I guess. Like I know what I want to write and then I write it. But when I reread it, I’m no longer thinking about what I wanted to write, I’m thinking about what I did write. And that’s sort of a special feeling, especially if you genuinely do write for yourself. I can reread my work over and over and it’s my favorite thing, but simultaneously not good enough to show anyone.

happy (late) blorbo blursday! how are your characters with animals? do any of them have a favourite or any beloved pets? who's the best and who's the worst at handling them? :D
Most of them are good or indifferent with animals because I grew up with a million pets so it’s like. Just a part of life to have at least one dog around. And I wouldn’t know how to write someone who dislikes pets.
Cassian loves animals, but I did end up working in a few animal interactions specifically to mirror his relationships with the other characters, so it doesn’t seem like he likes animals much in the beginning. He does, he’s just also bad with them. He gets nervous because he likes them but they probably won’t like him. The end shows him as a catdad because I think that’s what he deserves.
Adelaine loves animals also, but due to her childhood, she was only able to interact with them in certain ways. She could have as many dogs as she liked, but they had to live in the Royal kennel. She got ponies regularly during her horse girl phase, but she could only see them if her riding coach was with her. She wasn’t supposed to play with the cats that were kept to eat the mice. She would be a werewolf kid and read zoology magazines in the school library in a modern AU, but she also had her experiences governed for her. So she doesn’t exactly know how to interact normally with, like, a normal pet. She never had to bathe or feed them or take them for walks as a kid, and it shows. So she ends up a plant mom, and she visits Cassian and sees his cat, and that’s good enough for her.
Aoife and Keeva both wanted pets growing up, but Aoife is allergic to dogs. Keeva is also very much not a cat person, and when Cassian came home with the cat, they just kind of… had to deal with it? They grow to care about the cat, but they didn’t particularly want it. It’s Cassian’s baby. Aoife still wishes for a pet, but she’s also content to watch her wife gardening and… it’s nice.
Minnie isn’t an animal person, and it kind of ties into her fear of being vulnerable; she’s not good with people, why would she be good with animals? They kinda freak her out a bit. I think she would be a dog person if she could work through her issues, though. Cassian, who grew up with a bunch of dogs, would probably be really good at helping teach Minnie to take care of them. He’d get her an older Golden Retriever and come over a lot to check on them. (This is a long winded way of saying “Minnie needs a therapy animal, and even Cassian, who had the emotional intelligence of a stick, can fucking tell.”)
I think out of all my OC’s, the one who is best with animals is probably Joshua; he has dog person energy, but I’ve decided that he maybe has a fish tank or something? And it originally started as something his mentor gave him to try and help provide some structure in his life (remembering to feed the fish, to change the water, etc.), but over time it also became a hobby he just really vibed with. I know that fish aren’t super hard to care for usually, he definitely could and probably does get larger pets later, but there’s just something special to him about introducing a new species to the tank, arranging the decor, and just… watching the fish swim.
And the worst is… hmmmmm okay the worst is Luca but only because Luca is, like, chronic only child who never had a pet. He was given endless attention as a kid, they have a bit of a rep now, trying to put a living thing in their care is just asking for trouble. He also has the self-preservation skills of a toddler. You could replace the trail mix he’s eating with literal rocks and he wouldn’t notice. And “self-absorbed guy who forgets to feed themself” is not the kind of person who is going to remember to walk a dog or change the cat litter. Also animals are just icky and they have better things to do. Luca would put a high-energy dog in a room with some food and newspapers and not check on it all day, and they wouldn’t even realize that that’s a problem. He thinks that’s just how to take care of a dog.

Happy Blorbo Blursday!
If you had to pick a different character to be your main character, who would you pick? Are there any big ways that the story would change?
Well I’ve actually spent an entire year debating with myself if Adelaine would make a better protagonist than Cassian ahdjajdj (the answer is that she would but I struggle to write her)
So that story aside, I think that swapping the roles of Tanya (the protagonist) and Percy (these are placeholder names) would make a really interesting story. Part of the dynamic is that Percy has been put into a completely new place with a new culture and language, he’s quick to learn but just naturally awkward, and Tanya is sort of his compass; they just kinda understand each other in a way that others don’t, so if he sticks with her, things will probably work out. And Tanya herself thrives on her home turf. Her ability to adapt to new situations is very good, if she has a base to work from.
Flipping that by putting Tanya in Percy’s world would be a huge change. He’s still awkward, but he’s also playing the role of the guide. Tanya is completely out of her depth for the first time in her life.
I also just think it would be really fun to write something focused on Percy. I’ve been playing around with some ideas for him, both set before and after the main story, but no plans to write any of it yet. It would be really interesting to see him in more familiar territory, to see his family dynamics, and to overall see more of his thought process.
And i think that The biggest change would be in the overall feel of the story. Tanya’s story is obviously built around her interests, her history, and her home. Making Percy the protagonist would change the focus to his interests, history, and home, And even though he and Tanya have a strong bond, they’re very different.
And one thing I think would stay the same… Tanya dyes her hair and Percy helps. But I think that if the story were more about Percy’s journeys than Tanya’s, he might join her.

Hiya, happy STS!
If you had to pick, what plot thread, aside from a central plot, would you say you enjoy the most, for any reason?
Oh this is a great question!
I think it would be the subplot for my unnamed story that I’ve been thinking of as “A noir detective is the protagonist of a fantasy Indiana Jones story, alongside his ex who he hasn’t spoken to since the divorce.”
And I like it because, while a lot of adventure stories would do the opposite, they don’t get back together at the end. The arc isn’t about reigniting an old flame, it’s about getting closure; it’s not that they ended on bad terms, it was just very uncomfortable and neither wanted to address it. So throughout the process of working together, they end up starting to acknowledge why they didn’t work in the first place, and that that’s okay. They end the book with a much better relationship than they ever had when they were romantically involved.
