Minerva's true love. Part 1.
Okay. This is part of my Muggle AU. Remus is not around because he will meet the boys in six year when he transfers to Hogwarts.
Minerva ends up having a special love for him because he is a trans kid just like her. But that comes later.
So just a little background: Minerva met Dougal when she was a student at Oxford. Before she transitioned. Other students used to bully Minerva who back then was known as Michael. She was known as "Tiny Mike" because she used to be skinny. And Dougal had always defended her. But Dougal as a straight man didn't notice her before her transition. Minerva never dared to speak to him either way.
There at Oxford, Minerva met Albus Dumbledore, who was a last year student and a genius when Minerva was a freshman. They became friends. And it was Albus who helped Minnie transition.
When Minerva was in her thirties, she encountered Dougal again. Now as her true self. They fell in love. But Minerva hid her true identity and the fact that they knew each other from before. But Dougal fell for her and he left his fiance to be with her.
That's when Minerva decided to tell him the truth. Of who she used to be and how he used to help her back then, when she was "Tiny Mike". Dougal was shocked to find the truth at first and he asked Minnie for time.
But then days later, Minnie saw him kissing. his ex. And she decided he didn't love her and she ran away. They never saw each other again until now.
Right, now enjoy. Hope you like it.
Also, if you are interested in Albus and Gellert's story, I am planning to dive into it as well. But in another post.
*********************
"Good morning, Minerva. You're early"
Albus smiled as Minnie took a seat without saying a word. She was still furious.
"Can I offer you some tea? Coffee?"
Minerva scoffed and pretended to be reading something that Albus knew it was one of his knitting magazines.
"Are you still angry, Minnie?"
Silence. Albus almost laughed.
"Minnie..."
"I don't speak with traitors...." Minerva spat "And don't call me Minnie"
"A traitor? Why am I a traitor?" Albus giggled.
Minerva looked at him.
"You are really asking, Albus?" Minerva said "You know what you did..."
It wasn't Albus, actually. It was destiny. It was fate. It was probably the fact Dougal McGregor was Minerva's true love.
You see, Rosmerta was looking for a new bartender. She was going mad with the amount of clients she'd been having lately and the lack of staff she had. And guess who applied? Rosmerta had asked Albus for help. It wasn't Albus fault. And Albus had smiled at how destiny was funny when he saw Dougal's name in the applicants list.
"I told you I didn't do anything, Minnie" Albus explained "He applied"
"And you had to tell Rosmerta to hire him?" Minerva scoffed.
"We both agreed he was the best for the job... Better not have students around alcohol"
"But... But..." Minerva groaned "Why do you meddle, ha?"
"What?" Albus smirked.
"Yeah Albus! You are a meddler! You meddle into Rosemerta's business and you meddle into my life..."
Albus tutted "Why do you care? I thought you said you were far over him"
Minerva blushed. But she tried to hide it. Albus was pleased.
"Or maybe... After all these years... You still have feelings for him?"
"But what is your problem?! Ha!" Minerva squealed angrily "I am not longer young, a freaking teenager like the kids I teach. I am an old grown up woman. My life is teaching so don't freaking bother me, do you understand!?! And I am not speaking to you!"
Minerva whispered insults and swear words as she continued to peek into Albus' magazine.
Albus smiled.
"A very mature woman, I see"
Minerva continued to ignore him.
They heard a knock on the door.
"Come in"
Someone stepped into Albus' office. It was Dougal.
"Sorry to interrupt, Mr. Dumbledore" Dougal said with a smile on his face. Dougal was a nice man. Always gentle, always kind. Nothing like the wanker Minerva had told him about.
His eyes flickered towards Minerva.
"Aah Dougal, please come in" Albus raised from his chair to welcome him.
Minerva turned her head in surprise.
"What in the name of God are you doing here?" she asked.
It had been funny the first time they encountered each other a few days ago. Out of surprise, Minerva had poured her drink on Dougal's head, the minute he said Hi. And then she ran away. It had been ages. 23 years to be precise. Minerva had married Elphistone trying to forget about Dougal. May Elphistone rest in Peace. And Dougal had confessed that he was finally getting divorced from his wife.
All that time apart. And for what? A misunderstanding?
Before Dougal could answer, Albus spoke.
"I called him" he said "I wanted to give Mr. Dougal a tour around the castle"
"Yes... I..."
"But why?" Minerva interrupted, speaking only to Albus "He is Rosemerta's bartender. He has nothing to do with the school"
"Yeah you are right, Minerva" Albus nodded "But Dougal will actually live in the castle..."
Minerva's eyes opened up like plates.
"I offered him one of the teachers empty dorms"
Minerva turned towards Dougal furiously.
"And your wife doesn't mind that?"
"My ex wife" Dougal answered "And no she would not mind. As long as I stay far away from her. I don't think she wants to see me around" he chuckled.
"Well, save your personal things for someone who cares..." Minerva shrugged "I am leaving..." she stood up.
"But we had a meeting with Slughorn just now"
"It looks you have other things to do, Albus" Minerva said this giving a nasty look at Dougal. Then she walked to the door.
"It was nice seeing you again, Minerva" Dougal said with a special smile on his face.
"I wish I could say the same..." Minerva spat "But it is so sad to see how some people age..." she looked at him up side down "So sad, really..."
Then she tried to get through the door but Dougal was blocking the way.
"Excuse me..." Minerva said.
"Minnie..."
"Excuse me!" And she practically pushed Dougal away to cross.
Then she slammed the door closed.
Dougal smiled.
"I forgot the temper Minnie had. So stubborn, that woman" he said "I used to love that about her"
Albus smiled as well. Albus had to do something. It was obvious that there was still something there. If only Dougal knew how much Minnie suffered without him. How much she loved him. How she never really got over him. And judging by the way Dougal still looked at Minnie, he hadn't gotten over her as well. Albus was going to do something to get them back together. He wanted to see his best friend happy.
"Shall I show you around?"
"Yes, please" Dougal sighed.
So they walked out of Dumbledore' office to explore the castle.
**************
Albus was just finishing serving himself a tea when he heard a knock on the door.
"Come in"
Albus saw the head of James Potter popping in. The poor boy looked a bit pale.
"Good morning, sir"
"Mr. James..." Albus smiled "Please come in..."
James stepped in, followed by Sirius Black, and Peter Pettigrew. Those three troublemakers. They had done mischief every since they got to this school. But brilliant things. Brilliant things for sure. Albus was sure they could help him with his plan.
"Good morning..."
"Good morning, sir..."
Albus had a sip of his tea.
"Good morning..."
The three boys stood up really close to each other. They didn't say a word. But they had guilty expressions.
Albus raised an eyebrow.
"Well, gentlemen... I called you here because..."
"I am sorry, Mr. Dumbledore!!" Peter cried "We didn't want to explode the toilets... It was just a silly little prank! And it got out of control..."
So it hadn't been a plumbing problem then... Impressive...
"Peter..." James protested under his breath.
"Please don't expell us!" Peter begged "My mum would surely kill me if you do"
"Come on, Peter" Sirius rolled his eyes "Your mum is cool. My parents are gonna bury me alive"
"But why?" James shrugged "We didn't do anything"
"You clearly don't know my mum when she is angry, Sirius" Peter ignored him.
Sirius smirked "I would love to see that!"
"Oh shut up!"
"We didn't do anything" James added "We didn't do anything, Mr. Dumbledore!"
Albus almost laughed. This was his opportunity. He was going to take this prank of them as an advantage. Those brilliant minds could know exactly what to do with Minnie and Dougal.
"I don't know, boys" Albus fakely sighed "The amount of trouble you've been this year and now this..." Albus tutted "I don't know if you would be able to pass the year..."
Lies. Albus did the impossible to help those who were in danger of losing the year. Besides, these boys were brilliant. But Albus needed to lie now. And based on their pale expressions he was doing a great job.
"What?" James gasped.
Peter looked like he was going to vomit.
"Please, Mr. Dumbledore..." Sirius begged "There must be something we could do!"
Albus sighed, standing up.
"Okay... I might be able to help you..."
The three boys looked at him hopefully.
"I could..." Albus began pacing "drop all the charges against you. And leave your record clean so you could pass the year..."
"We'll do anything..." Peter cried.
"If...." Albus continued "If you help me with something"
"What is it?" James asked carefully.
Albus smirked.
"Are you boys fans of romance?"
The three boys looked between each other.

He didn't realise how much he could feel her agony, how much he needed her happiness and how desperately he begged and prayed silently to the higher power to show mercy on her until she was clutching his robes, sobbing uncontrollably, both kneeled down on the blood covered floor of now-in-shambles house of her long lost young love, who was now dead.. ironically due to same thing that seperated them.
Maybe it was also then he should have realised that she was becoming his whole world..his life..his love.
Albus Dumbledore was falling in love with her... slowly.. unknowingly..but surely..

HOGWARTS MEMORIES ➝ Minerva & Dougal : Did I make that easy to walk right in and out of my life ?
« Goodbye, my almost lover. Goodbye, my hopeless dream. I'm trying not to think about you. Can't you just let me be? So long, my luckless romance. My back is turned on you. I should've known you'd bring me heartache. Almost lovers always do...  » - ♛

I Wish You Love, By Nat King Cole
"Goodbye, no use leading with our chins. This is where our story ends. Never lovers, ever friends. Goodbye, let our hearts call it a day. But before you walk away, I sincerely want to say. I wish you bluebirds in the Spring, to give your heart a song to sing. And then a kiss, but more than this, I wish you love. And in July, a lemonade,  to cool you in some leafy glade. I wish you health, and more than wealth, I wish you love. My breaking heart and I agree, that you and I could never be. So With my best, my very best, I set you free. I wish you shelter from the storm, a cozy fire to keep you warm, but most of all, when snowflakes fall, I wish you love."
This song reminds me of Minerva and Dougal when Minerva brakes-off their engagement.

Minerva's true love. Part 2.
Make sure to check Part 1 and read the explanation before so you can understand better.
*******************
Minerva couldn't believe she had to spend her Saturday tutoring Mr. Pettigrew. But again she couldn't refuse. She knew Mr. Pettigrew had a brilliant mind. He was just lazy and he distracted himself so easily. Besides, Minerva didn't have better plans. Her life was her work. She lived to teach, nothing else.
"Thank you again for helping me" Mr. Pettigrew told her as they walked through Hogsmeade streets "I am such an idiot"
"You're not an idiot, Mr. Pettigrew" Minerva answered "Math is not only about understanding the problems but practicing them"
Minerva smiled. She believed each one of her students had a chance to do better.
"But tell me...Why here?" she added "We could've been more comfortable in my office"
Pettigrew cleared his throat "Well, it is a sunny Saturday... I don't want to be locked in"
Minerva raised an eyebrow because Mr. Pettigrew sounded nervous. But it might've been the nerves of having tutoring class with her.
"Alright, I guess" Minerva shrugged "Where do you want to go?"
"Ahm... Madam Rosemerta's?"
Minerva stopped out of the sudden. She hadn't stepped foot in that place since he worked there. Even though she loved Rosemerta's drinks and food. Even if Rosemerta was a personal friend. Minerva was ashamed to see him. Especially since he'd been sending her roses, and writing little messages in the board which all her students saw, and sending her chocolates. What a fool. He had been recently divorced. And he was already going after her? After all this time? After what he knew? Dougal was a 60 year old man and he acted like a teenager.
"Professor McGonagall?"
"Why do we have to go precisely there, ha?"
"Well..." Pettigrew scratched his head "There is no other place! And... And... We cannot go to Hogshead, for example. That is a dangerous place. And if we go to Madam Puddifood's people are gonna think we are on a date..."
"Mr. Pettigrew!" Minerva gasped "How could you think such a thing? I am old enough to be your grandmother!"
Pettigrew got red "I... I... I... wouldn't think that... It is just that people only go there to have a date! It is a romantic place...."
Minerva raised an eyebrow. But the kid had a point.
Minerva sighed "Fine! Let's go to Madam Rosemerta's"
"Great!" Pettigrew smiled. He smiled too much for being about to study math on a Saturday morning.
But Minerva decided to ignore him and walked along. Pettigrew followed.
***********************************
Dougal was an idiot or maybe a bit too desperate to be letting thirteen-year-old kids help him with Minerva. But he trusted Dumbledore somehow. And Dumbledore trusted these kids.
Dougal had thought he would never see Minerva again. After a failed marriage, dissaponting his grown up children, and dropping everything to do what he used to love (serving drinks in a bar, laughing with the clients stories), Dougal never thought life could bring him a second opportunity. But seeing Minerva again had gave him hope. Hope that his life wasn't over. He could have the life he wanted and be happy. Even if he was old.
And everything he once felt for Minerva came back. The only woman that had put his world up side down. The only one he truly loved.
"Please.... Please... Please... Rosemerta!!"
"Come on Rose... Can I call you Rose?"
"No. No. No...." Rosemerta shook her head "I am not willing to be involved into this mess..."
"Pretty pleeeaseee" the kid with glasses begged "You like McGonagall... She is your friend! You want her to be happy with this gentleman, right?"
Dougal was embarrassed to be dragged into this mess as well. He felt like a teenager. He used to do these things with his friends at school.
"I am not sure this plan would work..."
"Come on, Rose!" the other kid spoke "Minnie will surely get jealous if she sees Mr. McGregor is after a woman as beautiful as you..."
Rosemerta smiled.
"I... I don't know..."
"Comeee ooon!!" the boys begged.
"You don't have to do this if you don't want to" Dougal said. This woman had done enough giving a man his age a job. Besides, she was too young for him. Minerva would never believe it.
"Of course she has to!" the boy with glasses said "It is love! True love! You have to help them be together...."
"True love?" Rosemerta asked.
"Yes! Isn't it true love, Mr. McGregor?" the other boy asked.
Dougal smiled to himself.
"I would like to believe that yes" he said "Destiny put her back in my life"
Rosemerta seemed to be melted away by Dougal's words.
"Fine..." she said as the boys cheered "I want Minerva to find love again. She deserves it" she smiled.
Dougal smiled back. Thanking her.
"Oh! Here they come!" One of the boys said "Ready to play your parts?"
"Yeah" Dougal said nervously as Rosemerta smiled.
"Okay... We will hide behind the counter" the other boy added "Good luck!"
The two boys hid behind the counter as Minerva and another kid came in. Dougal and Minerva crossed glances for a second. And then she looked away embarrassed.
"Come Professor!" the boy next to her said "Here's a free table!"
"Mr. Pettigrew...." Minerva protested. But the boy was already walking towards the nearest table next to the counter. Good place for Minerva to see and hear everything.
Minerva buffed as she followed the kid and took a seat furiously. Dougal almost smiled but he had to stick to the plan. He continued cleaning glasses.
"So what do you want me to explain, Pettigrew?" Minerva asked.
"Everything...."
"Excuse me?"
"Oh! What we saw last class..."
"You mean fractions?"
"Yeah! Fractions...."
Minerva sighed but she began explaining. Dougal flickered his eyes towards the boys who gave him thumbs up. And Madam Rosemerta gave him an understanding nod.
She cleared her throat.
"Oh Dougy...." Rosemerta exclaimed.
Dougal blinked. Dougy?
"Dougy... Can you please help me move those boxes to the cellar?"
"Yeah yeah of course, Rose" he followed what that kid had said.
"Thank you so much...." Rosemerta continued flirting "You have such strong arms. I really needed a strong man around...."
Dougal noticed Minerva's eyes were flickering towards them but she tried to hide it. The boy was doing his best covering his giggles.
"Anything for a beautiful woman like you"
Rosemerta faked a laugh.
"I'll finish here and I'll help with the boxes"
"Right..." Rosemerta touched his arm gently "Maybe I will have to thank you later over some drinks. What do you say?"
"Sounds lovely..."
Minerva scoffed and tutted. But she didn't look up from the book.
Rosemerta smiled in complicity and she went back to the cellar.
"Did you understand, Pettigrew?" Minerva asked.
"Amm, yes..."
"Okay..." she said "Complete these excersices while I get us some drinks...."
This was Dougal's chance. He was nervous and his heart raised.
"Can I have a beer, Professor?" the boy smiled.
Minerva gave him an angry look.
"Or maybe a soda is fine"
Minerva walked up to the counter. Dougal cleared his throat.
"Minerva, what can I get you?"
Minerva had an angry serious expression.
"A soda and a black tea" she answered without even looking up.
"On the way..."
"You know it is pathetic, right?" Minerva asked while Dougal served the drinks.
"What is pathetic?"
"You just got divorced. And now you going after a younger woman?" she scoffed "A woman that could easily be your daughter... I cannot believe how cheeky you are..." she tutted.
"I don't see the problem, really" Dougal shrugged "She is single. I am single... I want to feel young again"
Minerva laughed.
"Rosemerta is young. You are just a decrepit old man" Minerva crossed her arms.
Dougal smiled.
"Don't tell me you're jealous"
"Meee? Jealous?" Minerva gasped. She laughed again. "I couldn't give a damn about what you do!" she snapped "You want to date your boss? Fine...." she shrugged "But please, I will ask you to stop sending me ridiculous gifts and messages"
Dougal raised an eyebrow. He hadn't send her anything. It surely had been the boys.
"You didn't like my presents?"
Minerva looked at him.
"I threw every single one of them to the garbage" she spat "Better give Rosemerta your presents. And leave me the heck alone!"
Minerva buffed as she returned to the table. She even forgot about the drinks.
Dougal was absolutely in love with her. Minerva was such a wonderful woman. And conquering back then had been a challenge. He would gladly do it again. Dougal was not gonna lose the love of his life.
"Come on, Pettigrew" Minerva ordered "I am sick to be here, we will continue in my office..."
"But... Professor...."
"I said in my office, Pettigrew!!" Minerva yelled "Come on!!" she snapped.
The boy had no more remedy than to follow her. Not without giving a smile at Dougal. Dougal smiled back.
The minute they crossed the door. The two boys' heads popped out of the counter. And Rosemerta came out of the cellar.
"That was brilliant!!" the boy with glasses said.
"Yeah! Rose!" the other agreed "What an incredible actress! So do you, Mr. McGregor"
"Nah! Rosemerta was the one that glowed. It was impressive"
Rosemerta smiled.
"Really?"
"Yeah yeah, you should consider acting as a career" one of the boys said.
"Well," Rosemerta blushed "I've always loved acting..."
"Now poor Pete has to study math in vain" the other whispered in his friend's ear.
Dougal chuckled "Thank you, Rosemerta. Thank you, boys" he sighed "But it was for nothing. Minerva doesn't want anything to do with me"
"Noo! Nah!" the boy with glasses exclaimed "Didn't you hear her? She was bloody jealous!..." he pushed his glasses back
"Yeah totally! She is so into you!"
"Us women... When we say something we actually mean the contrary..." Rosemerta added.
"Really?"
"It's not gonna work with Evans, James"
"Well nothing is impossible" James said "Leave it to us, Mr. McGregor. I have another plan..." the boy smirked.  Dougal had to trust because he'd do anything to get Minnie back.
***************************
Unchained Melody was Minerva's favorite song of all times. She remembered how her mother listened to it when Minerva was a kid. The delicacy and femininity in which her mother sang along and danced by herself. Minerva wanted to be like her. And then when Ghost came out, Minerva had watched it and cried remembering Dougal. They used to slow dance to this song all the time.
Minerva wasn't speaking to Albus. But he had good taste. Minerva could hear the music from his cabin at Hogsmeade. Right next to hers.
"And... Time goes by... So slowly...." Minerva sang as she corrected the seventh-years' homework.
The music was relaxing. Until it became louder. So loud it sounded as if it was coming from outside. Just outside Minerva's window. Wait...
Minerva raised an eyebrow. This couldn't be happening. No no no.
Minerva stood up and peeked through her window. Just down there, Dougal was standing up. Next to a speaker, playing this song. And next to him, Potter, Black and Pettigrew were holding a sign that said: "Minnie, my love". No those three little devils. Why were they involved in this?
"What the hell is happening here??"
"Minerva..." Dougal smiled. He still had that seducing smile of his. The smile that used to melt Minerva away "Could you come down so we could speak for a second?"
This was surely a prank. Those little pranks that the Gryffindor boys used to play. They were involving Dougal somehow. First the flirting with Rosemerta and now this? Minerva was not going to fall.
"Yeah just one second...."
Minerva came back inside. Dougal and the boys smiled thinking she was actually going to come down. But seconds later, Minerva came back. With a bucket full of water. And she poured it all over Dougal.
"Get out of my house now! You stupid old man!" she yelled furiously "And you three...." she pointed to the boys "You are going to serve detention all month! Do you hear me?"
Then Minerva shut the window closed.
It had hurt Minerva leaving Dougal. But after she told him the truth, he didn't think the same about her. Minerva couldn't blame him. It must've been hard discovering that your one-year girlfriend was a trans woman. Dougal had asked her for time. And then, the next thing Minerva saw, was Dougal kissing his ex. The woman he had been engaged to. And the woman he ended up marrying.
This was surely a joke. Because Dougal didn't love her. He never did. Or he never loved the real Minerva. Perhaps he had only been into cis women. So Minerva hated Albus for bringing him back into her life. After losing Elphistone, a man that she never loved but she married because she had affection towards to, Minerva decided to never get into a relationship again. She hated Albus. And she hated those boys for pranking their professor. And she hated Dougal for making fun of her and flirting with Rosemerta. She hated everyone. And Minerva cried silent tears. Because she was an idiot. A stupid idiot.

Flashback || Moonlight on the Lake
Date: Late July, 1954.  Countdown: One week until Minerva's move back to London.
Softest silk of skin, barest velvet touch. Sweetest, delectable kisses, a give and take of lust through pillow plump lips. Wordless communication through soft groans and body language.
Sensations overwhelmed Minerva, leading her down a luxurious and promising, yet unknown path. How could she say no to his tantalizing taste? She wanted him, all of him, and nothing less than all he could give.
Is this love? Minerva wondered, in a brief moment free of Dougal's intoxicating caresses. Is this what Muggles believe to be magic?
Dougal's mouth moved against Minerva's neck, and all coherent thoughts ceased, leaving only the most primitive of instincts. She closed her eyes, feeling the movement down to the very marrow of her bones. Her blood dissolved to liquid fire, flowing through all of her body, until her very essence could melt into his.
A pause in motion made Minerva settle back down to earth, her body solidifying and cooling in the night air. She felt the cool summer grass underneath her, caught a glimpse of the glittering lake topped with sliver some feet away. All summer long, this plot of McGregor land had been their place; their space, where they could grow. Minerva hadn't been surprised when the lake also became the spot where they consecrated their love for the first time.
She had never allowed herself to just be, to bask in her own beauty and the potential she could offer others. Such power was greater than magic, stronger than any charm. Young, first love's power could override any magic known to witch or wizard. Minerva's breathing stabilized, but a small laugh escaped her,
"What's so funny, darling?" Dougal whispered against the corner of Minerva's mouth. Minerva curled her body towards Dougal's, nuzzling the side of his neck. His body, clothed only in moonlight, shone with sweat and soft silver. For a split second, Minerva realized that she must look the same; naked, exposed, bared for Dougal's eyes alone.
She planted a soft kiss on Dougal's forehead, smiling. "I just thought how I never want this night to end."
At this, Dougal chuckled as well, wrapping his arms around Minerva's body, encompassing her with his love.
"Ah, Minnie, always the poetic one."
Minerva scowled, turning to swat her lover's arm playfully. "How many times have I told you not to call me 'Minnie'? You make me sound like a five year old girl with bows tied in my hair."
Dougal lifted an eyebrow, his green eyes sparking. "I wouldn't call you a girl, Miss McGonagall. Not after your previous display."
A blush crept up Minerva's cheeks, but she covered her coloration with a quick quip. "And I wouldn't call you a gentleman after a few of your demonstrations, either, Mr. McGregor."
At this, Dougal laughed outright, the sound breaking the comfortable silence of the lakeside.
"I never claimed to be a gentleman, Min," he said. "And I never will. It's too fun being a cad with you as my accomplice."
A full smile spread across Minerva's face, although she didn't reply. She wanted to memorize Dougal's face: the strength of his chin, his straight nose, that dark hair fell to his ears. She adored his strengths, but loved his weaknesses, like the chipped front tooth framed by that crooked smile that dared the world to challenge him, with that unkempt stubble on his chin. Minerva wanted to absorb his happiness within herself, to keep it there for all eternity.
Dougal turned to Minerva, that smile still on his lips, but a serious note in his eyes. "I love you, you know, Minnie."
Instantly, Minerva's world fell away, shattering and reforming into something bright and bold and new. She had felt that she loved for a while now after meeting him, but they'd never verbalized what laid between them. The words burst in her heart, filling her with restless, joyful energy. She knew the logical thing would be to profess her mutual love in words, but at the moment, her feelings felt too big to communicate through those flimsy, fallible letters. She needed something more.
Silently, Minerva reached out a hand, grasping Dougal's own. She stood up, pulling him along, his six foot tall frame only an inch or so above her's. Dougal didn't question Minerva's motives, though there was curiosity in his eyes. That was another thing Minerva loved about Dougal; he let her lead him blindly, with all the trust in his heart.
She took him down to the lake's bank, down to the cold, clear, refreshing water. Minerva prayed that the water's characteristic clarity would enter her own body; she wanted to treasure this night-- this melody of love and magic.
Gazing out at the water, watching the full moon's light play across the surface, Minerva took strength.
"Do you see the moonlight on the lake, Doug?" she asked, looking at Dougal cockeyed. Although anyone could see the lake, Dougal squeezed her hand in answer.
"As long as there's a moon shining here," Minerva continued. "My feelings for you will remain. As long as the moon sits up in her throne, I will never forget you."
Minerva caught Dougal's gaze and held it, willing her emotions to show there. She had never felt so vulnerable, so open; for years, she was afraid to show herself, her true feelings. She would breech the walls herself, to let Dougal know the depths she held. Let him see her struggle, her desperation to let go; he needed all of her.
"I love you too, Dougal McGregor. I will always love you, as long as the moon shines."
There, she kissed him again, deeply and unafraid, ready for whatever came next, and willing that there would always be moonlight along the lake.
