Copy of In Honor of Dr. King
Tumblr media
Greetings All You Mavens of Cloth,
I hope you enjoyed a long, creative, holiday weekend, and were able to soak in the spirit of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in some way, shape, or form. I mentioned that this week's blog post would be dedicated to Lady Liberty in the run up to the inauguration. But I failed to factor for the MLK holiday at the time.  So, I'd like this post to pay homage to Dr. King. And that's what it's going to do (blogs are nice this way: you really can be the queen of your own domain).
So, Lady Liberty will be on-hand next week, with some truly wonderful examples of her influence stitched in cloth, along with a feature on the upcoming Million Women March in D.C. (this Saturday, January 21), and marches happening in sister-cities across the U.S. that same day.
In the meantime, enjoy this collection of art in honor of Dr. King. And a few other quilt-related gems in solidarity with and celebration of our African American brothers and sisters.
See you on the way to the mountaintop.
A-

"All we say to America is, 'Be true to what you said on paper.' If I lived in China or even Russia, or any totalitarian country, maybe I could understand the denial of certain basic First Amendment privileges, because they hadn't committed themselves to that over there. But somewhere I read of the freedom of assembly. Somewhere I read of the freedom of speech. Somewhere I read of the freedom of the press. Somewhere I read that the greatness of America is the right to protest for right. And so just as I say, we aren't going to let any injunction turn us around. We are going on.
Well, I don't know what will happen now. We've got some difficult days ahead. But it doesn't matter with me now. Because I've been to the mountaintop."
Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. from his "Mountaintop Speech," delivered April 3, 1968, Mason Temple, Memphis, TN.

One Final Note:
For anyone who missed the opportunity to reflect on Dr. King yesterday, I recommend meditating on this thought provoking episode, "
The Spirituality of Peacemaking," produced by PRX, as part of their series, The Power of Non-Violence. It aired yesterday on my local NPR station. And I was so grateful to find myself at home hand-quilting an old top when it came on. The act of stitching while listening to people speak on the transformative power of what Dr. King referred to as SoulForce, was nothing short of a gift.

23 years ago, 1997 to be exact, my senior year, a group of students from #KentStateUniversity , got on the bus headed to the first ever #MillionWomenMarch in Philly, PA, accompanied by Dr Adilene Barnes-Harden (pictured with us in the Kente cloth outfit, I'm next to her, holding the sign) . During my time at Kent State, I switched my major about 5 times, had some interesting experiences (we'll just leave it at that, thankfully before the Facebook lol) , and I had some very awesome professors, especially in the Department of #PanAfricanStudies . If there was anything that was constant during my college years, in between all of the fun, it was the classes I had the privilege to take at Kent State. One of my favorite and one of the best professors EVER, was Dr. Barnes-Harden who taught The Black Woman, The Black Family, and other courses that changed my life! She was so raw and so real in the classroom and inspired us as black students on campus! She has transitioned, gone but definitely not forgotten. Ashe! Happy Blackout! ~ 🌑🙋🏿
This year has been full of blessings.
Highlight so far… traveling to DC for Million Woman March & listening to Angela Davis speak at Bus Boys & Poets.
Contemplating…
What’s the difference between a girl and a woman?
Dealing. FUCK the BS.
I get out in nature, listen to music, iCreate, iListen, iBreathe, iMeditate, and iRead.
I’m learning to live and love my solitude. People in this world will try to make you feel small… FUCK THEM. Do you. Take care of yourself cause at the end of the day all you got is your peace of mind.
Let’s give ourselves time to grow.

Million Women March DC - Jan-21-2017
Attended the Million Women’s March with friends in Washington DC along with thousands of others and millions around the world yesterday and the one word that comes to mind of the feeling to be there was solidarity. People were there for many reasons personal to them and together it created an energy that honestly gave me goosebumps. What comes to mind and things I heard people shout or had signs for just to name a few; Women’s rights are human rights, My body my choice, This is what democracy looks like...
We may have started this march as strangers, but the comraderie was there as it continued and even after it ended. Many like me who never marched in anything before and some who were there back in the 1960s (met 2 women from Idaho) who are marching again now in such an important time in our shared history. It will be something I will never forget and along with all the people involved in this movement yesterday will continue to support causes that are not represented by this government.  We will keep going until we are heard. This white house is our white house! I think Gloria Steinem said it best yesterday, ‘the constitution does not start with I the President, it starts with ‘We the People..’
The pictures here really do not describe or do justice to what it was like to be there in person. Just snapping with my phone when I could. I will have better pics once my friend posts them as she is a professional photographer. This experience was AMAZING!!!

Just a sea of people and signs as far as the eye could see. I heard alot of these signs were left on the white house lawn

We don't have a Hillary shirt so we wore the next best thing. Tomorrow we will March in solidarity in community, in love, and in hope. I want everyone to know that we stand with every parent and every family that knows how much of this little face is at risk. We stand with every minority, with every woman, with ever person in the LGBT community. We will stand, we will support, we will radiate love. I hope to see many of your beautiful faces there and if not I know you'll be there in spirit. Have a lovely first day of four years of hope. We can change the story. I know we can. SATURDAY September 30, 2017 Black women in all their diversity will march on the National Mall and the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. to denounce the propagation of state-violence and the widespread incarceration of Black women and girls, rape and all sexualized violence, the murders and brutalization of transwomen and the disappearances of our girls from our streets, our schools and our homes. Moreover, in this highly political moment of the twentieth year anniversary of the #MillionWomenMarch we amplify the struggles of Black women in the rural South—the “Black Belt”, and demand a cease and desist of all threats to those of us who are immigrant women across the country, living in fear of deportation. #EveryBlackWoman #BlackLivesMatter #BlackGirlMagic ✊🏾
