Edit: Context: Shu Takumi said that he meant “Art” in the games as general in an interview, I think he said in that interview that he thought of Phoenix as studying Shakespeare or something in London when saw Miles in the paper, but the general consensus is that he’s an art major in the fandom so I wanted to see what everyone else thought.

I swear if Capcom will give Apollo yet ANOTHER backstory and none to mr Piano Gavin in any future ace attorney game i will lose my fucking marbles.

Have you played the AA Investigations games? If yes, what did you think of them? Sadly I was only able to play for myself the first one (I couldn't make the translation patch for the second one work :( ), and let's just say that the novelty of playing as Edgeworth wore off quickly lol. The second one was much more ambitious with some stellar character arcs and a memorable final villain, but of course it's still stuck in "only in Japan" limbo...

Yes! We played both Investigations, and Investigations 2 (fan patch) about 10 years ago. Currently, we're in the middle of watching a letsplay/fandub of the games because uh, yeah. We're not going to play through them again. They're the worst 'games'-- NOT the worst stories– in the AA series.

I definitely can't blame you for saying the novelty wore off quickly. Investigations has some serious flaws as a game and in structure. Which is an absolute shame, because the characters and stories are some of my favorites.

I absolutely adore Detective Badd, Agent Lang, Shih-Nah, and Kay Faraday from the first game, and Sebastian Debeste and Justine Courtney from the second game are some of my favorite characters in the whole series.

It's also absolutely fantastic to get to see more of Miles and Gumshoe together. I just love them as a mystery solving pair. They have such delightful energy. It probably helps that I'm a gumworth shipper from way back of course XD

But frankly, the fantastic characters, interesting worldbuilding and good stories absolutely can't save the Investigations series from its faults.

Problems with Ace Attorney Investigations

the need for the narrative to telegraph to the player how to solve problems, and forcing the player to painstakingly go through each of Miles' thought processes as a game mechanic has the opposite of the intended effect. Instead of making the player feel clever it makes Miles Edgeworth seem, very, very stupid and slow.

logic chess (from the second game) is agonizing. It's a great character bit for Egdeworth, having him conceive every logical problem as a chess problem, but its a fucking agonizing game mechanic.

circular reasoning. Every case is way too long, and it goes around in circles. I feel like this is a result of the "trial" phases being outside the court and thus having no real mediator. It's very true to life because people are going to "nu-uh" for as long as they can, but, realistic or not, t's agonizing to explain the same things to characters over and over and over.

connected to the above, all of the cases are too long, and also some of the logical leaps that the games expect you to make are some of the worst in the series. From Apollo Justice onward the games got a lot better about having a clear line of logic for where you're supposed to present evidence. Investigations and investigations 2 are just fucking guesswork.

So yeah while I definitely think these games are fantastic lore and character wise and worth experiencing, they are absolutely aggravating to play. My personal suggestion for anyone who wants to experience them is to pick a lets play/walkthrough video of their favorite variety (commentary, dub, no commentary) and enjoy them without having to worry about the terrible fucking gameplay.

Prosecutor Athena Egdeworth and Detective Ema Skye (Alexia AU)

Context:

The UR-1 incident... was interesting enough for Chief Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth to take the case himself... and by interesting, I mean that one of his prosecutors was the defendant in the case.

In addition to that, the lawyer who was handling the case was Kristofer Gavin, someone who was to be careful according to a close friend of his, since although he tecnically did nothing wrong, he was not 100% trustworthy either. So he would take the case to see that the case was handled in the best way possible.

Before the trial began, the accused, Simon Blackquil, approached him along with a little girl, Athena Cykes being her name. After a tender conversation with the little girl, the accused took him to one side and asked him to do his job in the best way. Something Edgeworth agreed with, although it still seemed like a strange request to him. But no less strange than what he did to her next.

And it was: "If the court finds me guilty, I would like to ask you to please take care of Athena for me. She is the last thing of value I have left..."

Before Edgeworth could question further, they were called to begin the trial.

And even when Kristofer wanted to use the girl as a witness to close with a flourish, the only thing the testimony did was cause her credibility to go to the ground. And just as Blackquil had predicted... he was found guilty.

Now, Miles Edgeworth is known for being a person who don't like or can't deal with children, unlike a certain man, but he had made a promise... and he is going to keep it.

He thought this would be temporary, since as far as he knows, the girl's relatives are still alive and perfectly capable of taking care of her. What he didn't expect was that a suitcase full of Athena's clothes would arrive at his door along with adoption papers, with the permission of the aforementioned.

And despite having moved heaven and earth to look for these foolishly foolish people (as Franziska refered to them), he found no trace of them. They literally disappeared from the world so they wouldn't have to be responsible for her, leaving her with a complete stranger.

He would like to accept it or not. This little girl was alone in the world, and the only thing she had, apparently, was him. So a necessary question arose; "Do you want me to adopt you or do you want me to help you find a place where you can feel more comfortable? I'm sure he would do a better job... still, the decision is yours."

And as if history were repeating itself, she asked him a question: "Could a prosecutor help Simon get free?"

"...Only a prepared prosecutor, and with the necessary evidence, they could achieve this. Of course, if a second trial comes to prove his innocence." Edgeworth responds eloquently.

"...Could you help me...", Athena said timidly, but it was more than clear to Miles.

Therefore, without any fear of being wrong, I say; "Do you want me to help you become a prosecutor to catch the real culprit?" Athena nodded, determination reflected in her eyes.

"I could help you...but ONLY if you still want to be one when you're older." Miles responds, before adding; "Even so, I still can teach you a few simple things, but all in due time. Do you accept?"

"Y... Yes please!" Athena exclaims determinedly.

A father-daughter relationship still seemed a little rushed, but the master-pupil relationship seems appropriate right now, and he is more in tune with it. Almost the same as what he and that man had...

But the difference is that he will do it right, he will teach her the right way, so that she can avoid any and all of the mistakes he did. And even if she makes mistakes, she will still be perfect... she will be perfect in his eyes...

It's time for the honor of his last name to be carried with true pride and honor...he just hopes he's able to do it just as well as her father did with him...

Thinking of… Ace Attorney choir Au. Maybe Band Au as well.

Phoenix? Obvious tenor. Theatre kid and art kid? TENOR.

Y’all would think Miles would be the tenor, but nope, he’s an obvious baritone/bass. More baritone than anything but he can hit those low notes.

Larry? I want him to be a bass sooo badly but no, he’s either a baritone or just straight tenor. LITERALLY STRAIGHTEST TENOR TO EVER TENOR. Everyone always assumes he’s gay and he gets worked up about it.

Maya is a mezzo-soprano, obvi. I wanted her to be an alto or straight soprano but I don’t really think it fit her. People’s vocal parts literally fit what they look like. She is a mezzo.

FRANZISKA IS AN ALTO. End of story.

Klavier is such a tenor it’s not even funny. He wants to be a baritone/bass sooo badly. But he has like, one of those really strong tenor voices. There’s no way he hasn’t sung Santa Fe.

Apollo is a baritone… That’s it.

ATHENA. ATHENA. WHAT IS ATHENA. Brother I really can’t decide. Has the tenacity of an alto but the mostly bubbly personality of a soprano. I’ll stick her as mezzo for now.

PEARL? SOPRANO. TRUCY? MEZZO-SOPRANO. Need I say anymore?

Gumshoe is an obvious bass. Lots of basses are himbos and he’s no exception.

As much as I want Kristoph to be a tenor because he thinks he’s so insufferably above everyone else, I have to pick him as a bass. Nobody expects it, they all expect him to be a tenor. He has a beautiful bass voice.

SIMON IS A BASS. FULL BASS. Nothing more to add.

Dahlia is a soprano and Iris is at least a mezzo-soprano or alto. Dahlia’s one of those really bitchy sopranos who never takes a mezzo-soprano part. Iris always bears the brunt of the mezzo-soprano/second work because Dahlia makes her.

Small edit to add the Investigations Crew…

Lang is at least a baritone/bass. I can’t imagine him not being one like come on.

Kay is an alto. Full alto. TRUE ALTO.

Sebastian is a tenor. No, I will NOT take criticism.

Ema is an alto. No question about it.

I think I got mostly everyone? Those are the main ones in the choir. Some of them are in band, orchestra or guard (Miles is in band, Maya is in guard and Kristoph is in orchestra)

The teachers would be, yk, the usuals. Idk Von Karma can be the principal. Lana is the orchestra director, Mia is the choir director and Diego is the band director. Idk, Ray and Justine are still there too. Raymond is baritone and Justine is an alto.

MIA AND LANA ARE OBVIOUS ALTOS. DIEGO IS ALSO AN OBVIOUS BASS.

Inspired by Gyakuten Kenji|Ace Attorney Investigations, after 1-5, One-shot.

The thirteenth time when Miles Edgeworth cast a glance towards Franziska von Karma, she finally could not stand it anymore. That conflicted expression of wanting to speak but holding back didn't suit him at all. It wasn't like him to be indecisive. Did he throw away all of her father's teachings?

"What's wrong?" She looked straight at him, subconsciously tightening the whip in her hand.

He opened his mouth, but didn't say anything. She continued to look at him and the raised whip was about to fall--

"Franziska-"

The sound of the whip falling was crisp. Somehow, from his indifferent expression without much change she actually read a hint of relief.

"Have you been deceived by someone?"

"What nonsense are you talking about, Miles Egdeworth?" She wasn't polite as she whipped him again. "Are you underestimating me?"

"I misspoke," he still didn't dodge. "Okay, I meant to ask if--"

"Have you been deceived by a bad guy?"

She was taken aback for a moment before realizing what he meant. Her face instantly turned red. Her hand had already started moving before her brain had completed its thoughts, but this gave her a gap to think of a counterattack.

"Excuse me, Miles Egdeworth," she switched back to her calm smile and gestured her index finger. "you haven't even had a girlfriend yourself, have you?"

"A love fool like you might as well worry about yourself first."

"Franziska, you're not even of legal age!"

"Fools can only make foolish statements. The legal age in Germany is eighteen. Case closed."

He couldn't say anything in response, but she didn't feel any sense of victory. In the end, this was just a stupid and insignificant matter that had nothing to do with the creed of the prosecutors, her goal, or his life. How could he have the leisure to waste her time and energy with such trivial matters?

However, he smiled, which made her even more annoyed. "That's...great." Although she lowered her voice more than usual, she could still hear herself clearly.

"Great for what? If you don't have anything else I'll go first, there's still a case to attend to."

"Hold it!"

I'm not a suspect who needs to continue giving testimony, she thought, but still didn't swing her whip. "You'll be punished if you continue making foolish statements, you know?" She whipped towards the ground. "What do you want, Miles Edgeworth?"

"You're single now, aren't you?"

"What, what does that have to do with anything? You're single too, aren't you?"

"I just wanted to confirm."

"Are you mocking me, Miles Edgeworth?" Franziska von Karma increased the strength of her whip swing, "Even if I'm not single, what does it have to do with you? Fool!"

"No, why would I..." he said, "At least I watched you grow up."

So he's trying to reminiscing with her, she thought. But their relationship should have ended a long time ago...from the moment the DL6 incident was brought to a close. More precisely it shouldn't have existed in the first place: she wasn't supposed to be his older sister - although the guy would surely retort that he was the older brother, but she was the one who bossed people around between the two of them - in any case things weren't supposed to be that way. "That's your reason?" An unfamiliar emotion came over her, "What a poor argument ......"

She sometimes wondered what he really thought of her. She could probably be considered a companion or a junior until the ugly, bloody truth was revealed, but after that she no longer wanted to think about it. The daughter of his father's murderer, an international prosecutor who had met in some of his cases ...... can these count as relationships?

She didn't know what he really thought of her. She didn't really want to know, nor did he really want to - would make such a statement was not expected by himself, he would not have been some vulgar person who liked gossip. Although he had been flirted with a few times, he had never taken those words to heart. There's nothing wrong with being single since it's just a way of life that suits him.

But things might be different for Franziska, he thought. While the improper relationship between the international prosecutor and the international police officer was certainly rumour, her authentic emotional state was what really needed to be figured out. She was only 19, she couldn't afford to have her promising career cut short by an unworthy relationship. Someone worthy of her would have to be at least a better prosecutor than him, although he hadn't seen one yet that fit that bill.

So he hesitated, searching his heart for the right words to use in his inquiry, and ended up saying something terrible. Franziska noticed his lapse, which made him even more nervous, and it was only when the familiar whip fell on his body that he relaxed a bit. Her expression gave the answer he expected, but he was careful to add additional wording.

Being blocked by her strong argument was a complete departure from his initial assumption, however. Her tongue was getting sharper, he thought with a sense of relief and some amusement. A love fool ...... what a sharp sarcasm. A nice counterattack, but he wasn't going to budge. She was only nineteen and hadn't been to a bar mitzvah yet.

But he forgot that she became a prosecutor in German. Funny enough, he also took his judicial exams abroad. She was no longer the little girl in the sleeveless blouse who hadn't gotten her badge yet. He had to admit that she was now a reliable adult ...... which is great.

Returning to the present, they both fell silent. He wanted to end this inexplicable conversation, but couldn't find the words. She hated it when he acted superior in front of her, and he couldn't have known better. "It's good that your career as a prosecutor will not be affected," is definitely enough to earn him a dozen lashes, and "Can you wait for me?" such dark and dirty thought can not be detected by her, even the slightest bit. She is only his junior. His former junior.

"Miles," she said suddenly, "how many hours of sleep did you get this week?"

"Why are you suddenly asking this?"

"It's true that the lack of sleep has caused your brain in lack of blood supply," she laughed, "It's so unlike you to speak so foolishly today."

"Carnegie's trial is tomorrow, yet you have the leisure to come to me to ask such insignificant trifles ...... Let me guess, you have heard the rumours made by the fools in the prosecutor's office, haven't you?"

"Well, um ......" he moved his index finger, still with his hands on his chest.

"Only fools would take that sort of foolish rumours to heart. I'm the heir to Karma-"

"Until the smuggling case is completely solved you will focus only on this, right?"

"Isn't that what things supposed to be?"

"Then I'll be looking forward to your results," he said, "and I won't concede defeat in the competition of pursuing the truth, Franziska."

All that answered him was the sound of the whip falling. He didn't know how she felt about him, nor did he really want to - and she did the same. He didn't know the whispered words to herself that she unintentionally divulged after she turned and walked out a few steps: please wait for me. Don't leave me again.
