So I ran into several different videos and tutorials on modifying an old telephone handset into one of two kinds of lo-fi microphone: a passive mic using the speaker, and a powered mic using the carbon microphone element. The easiest way to do the former is to remove the microphone element and connect the earpiece's leads to a jack; the latter needs a battery and some way to block the DC return voltage from your amplifier, like a transformer. I decided to mod this handset — which its previous owner was kind enough to decorate with big plastic jewels — to do both, installing the jacks and power circuit into this plastic container (I think it originally held drink mix packets). The switch turns the power to the mouthpiece on and off (lighting the LED when on), while the earpiece is always connected to the other jack.

(I'm using ⅛" jacks because I'm intending to use this mostly to feed into my Eurorack system, though obviously it can feed things like audio interfaces and guitar amps with suitable adapters. I've only done a little testing, but it works exactly as designed so far!)

just got my first microphone so i can start doing some personal voice work for myself. any idea how to block out things like sounds from my computer?

It depends on what your computer set up is and what kind of mic you're using.

My first "serious" mic i got for doing voices was a Blue Snowball

So we can use that as an example

First option is Noise Removal in Audacity

Pretty easy. Select your audio track and then high lite an area where you arn't speaking

go to effects, noise removal, then get noise profile, then apply

Then select the whole track, go to noise removal and then apply and it should clean up most background noise like fans.

If that doesn't work, then try some sound proofing for your mic

Ether with a heavy comforter or blanket held over you and your mic and computer

or make a little cube of foam to put your mic in.

Sometimes you just can't get rid of background computer noise, so i always covered it up with audio
