Some folks were asking me about what I mean when I talk about "mass appeal" in regards to a character.

Okay, let me give an example:

Say you were playing a Dating Sim, and you had multiple routes in the game that let you choose exactly HOW you could treat your girlfriend/partner/whatever.

Some routes you would date her, marry her, other routes might be something completely different depending on your personal fantasy in regards to the character.

There might even be a route where you divorce or dump your girlfriend in the game you are playing, depending on what you decide to do.

When talking about a character that is liked by many different types of fans... you have to treat each fan with kid gloves.

Some routes will be appealing to some fans, while other routes might appeal to other types of fans.

The idea is that the game player (you) has the choice of what sort of fantasy in the game they want to live out.

That's ESPECIALLY TRUE in RPGs (Role Playing Games).

When something (like GG) is mainstream, you have to consider how much of that content can be appealing to fans of one type compared to fans who want something completely different.

THAT... is what "mass appeal" means.

It means everyone gets what they want to the extent that they wanted it... even if that means retconning some aspects of a popular character (which some incense some fans and upset them... but... that's the nature of mass appeal mainstream games.)

I just got done talking with a "very passionate" fan who was upset about how they treated Bridget in Arcade Mode... as if they completely disregarded Bridget's past content in previous games.

I think it's important to know where you stand with regards to some characters and what you want versus what others want.

But... as a historian, I try to keep everything in perspective.

My advice to all of you is to love the characters (and games) on your own personal terms... do NOT let other feelings and thoughts influence you.

Heck, you shouldn't even let MY thoughts influence you, at least if you want to keep your pure beliefs as a fan and what things you enjoyed about the game clear and visible to yourself!
