A-T-3 175 G.L.O.B.E. & Whiz Kid - Play That Beat Mr D.J.

Tommy Boy classic from before 'hip hop' became synonymous with 'rapper' and the DJ was just as important. Last Night A DJ Saved My Life was still a massive hit when this record came out but records about DJs had been popular since at least the 1960s, I'm thinking the excellent Hey Mr. DJ by Bobby Moore. Tracks about DJs became more numerous with disco, where club DJs were becoming as powerful as radio DJs for breaking new records

Interestingly, even though we'd had The Adventures Of Grandmaster Flash On The Wheels Of Steel, The Grand Mixer Cuts It Up by Grand Mixer D.St (A-T-2 103), and Malcolm McLaren and The World's Famous Supreme Team's Hobo Scratch (A-T-2 102) etc. Play That Beat Mr D.J. is still about a radio DJ rather than a DJ in a hip hop group, or turntablist. Run-DMC's Jam Master Jay (the b-side to the single Hard Times) is about to change all this when that track is released at the end of 1983. Despite G.L.O.B.E missing out writing about his DJ as a musician and going on about 'request lines' Play That Beat Mr D.J. is one of the earliest examples of a call and response record between a DJ and an MC

MC G.L.O.B.E. was a member of the Soulsonic Force and the Zulu Nation, he was also on the terrific B-boys Beware by Two Sisters. Sadly Whiz Kid's life was cut short, he was a pioneering DJ in the early days of hip hop. DJ Skribble and Gangstarr paid tribute to Play That Beat Mr D.J. in the late 1990s

Play That Beat Mr D.J. was a big record, it's still a source of much sampling, popular in the Miami bass scene as well as with turntablists

The other story to tell about this record is to promote it Tommy Boy records came up with a competition to remix it (an idea that is still used for promos), and in the process they would change musical history

Influential albums in my life #29. This album was released domestically in the mid 90s. It’s French rap. All in French. It was the first #hiphop I’d ever heard in another language and it blew my head. Gorgeous album. After this album I frantically searched out as much foreign language rap as possible. I eventually heard rap from Ireland, Brazil, Mexico, Germany etc. I found out about other French groups like #SupremeNTM, Sleo, Menelik, Les Sage Poets De La Rue and the film #LaHaine. If #Gangstarr is my main influence in beats and scratching then #MCSolaar and Producer / DJ Jimmy Jay is second. Super deep boom bap jazz cuts and sharp turntable skills. #DJPremier and Jimmy Jay former my sensibilities on what a scratch is supposed to sound like years before the #turntablist movement. For reference the sound fits somewhere between Gangstarr’s Daily Operation and Pete Rock and CL Smooth’s Mecca and the Soul Brother. The samples are gorgeous ranging from Bonnie and Clyde by #SergeGainsbourg to Blues and the Abstract Truth by Oliver Nelson and so forth. When I was I france in 2003 myself Andy crew got to meet the head of the Hi and Fly label who at that moment were reissuing material by The Afro Lafayette Rock Band. He used to hang with Solaar and Motorbass. I told him how much I loved Solaar and he recommended I not tell any French hip hop heads, the underground considered him a sell out, haha. Charlie Ahearn's film Wild Style was released 40-years-ago today. It's the seminal hip hop movie featuring many prominent early figures at the peak of their game. Graffiti artists: LEE, Lady Pink, Zephyr, Revolt, Sharp, Crash, Fab 5 Freddy. Bboy crews: Rock Steady Crew, NY City Breakers. Rappers and Rap Crews: Grandmaster Caz, Rodney Cee, KK Rockwell, Rammellzee, Kool Moe Dee, Busy Bee. DJs: Grandmaster D.St, Grandmaster Flash, Grand Wizard Theodore, AJ Scratch, Charlie Chase, DJ Tony Tone

Blondie's Chris Stein handled the soundtrack, the instrumental pieces are very no wave, perhaps like demos for something released on 99 Records, especially ESG's Martin Hannett produced UFO

"[Fab 5] Freddy spent one day in a studio with musicians from New York's new wave scene, recording instrumentals. Blondie's Chris Stein played guitar and synth, improvising and trying to evoke the sound of scratching. Then Freddy pressed those instrumentals up on vinyl and gave them to DJs like Grand Wizard Theodore and Grandmaster D.ST, as well as the MCs in the film. Much of the movie uses the same itchy, restless beat, which returns again and again. That should get old quickly, but watching the movie, it works. It becomes the pulse of the story, the sound underlying the parties and MC battles throughout."

The Wild Style OST was reissued in 1997 by Rhino, and then by Mr. Bongo in 2007 as an expanded edition for the film's 25th Anniversary. Mr. Bongo released a vinyl LP edition of the soundtrack for the first time since 1983 last year
