New Maslenica bridge, as seen from the Old Maslenica bridge. The new one was positioned on that spot against the advice of locals, who said it was too windy there. Now it is frequently closed due to strong wind and then one must take a detour via the old bridge 🙃

Anywhere but here.

We end the day at the Slovenian border having ridden the length of the beautiful Croatian Riviera from Maslenica to Rijeka.

Study this picture - the sign beyond the warning sign shows a bend to the left where the road clearly bends to the right.

The motorway from Split to Maslenica is interminable. An endless strip of black tarmac cuts a swathe through acres and acres of low pines. There is nothing here, no settlements, no service stations, nothing to detract from the endless boredom of the road. Apart from – at the entrance to some tunnels signs warn to watch out for bears and wolves taking shelter there at night. Elsewhere there are signs for beware of boars. The only wildlife to be seen is a tortoise making its way across the road at a sedate pace.

Through a corner of Slovenia then into Italy and meet up with Phil exactly where and when we planned.

Motorway driving all day but we have a plan: Trieste, Venezia, Padova, Verona, Bresica, Milano, Ivrea, Biella.

Ok, the plan didn’t actually include a visit to Biella but this is where we end up for the night – at what turns out to be the second most scabby hotel of the trip. The three-star, down-market Hotel Calaluna[1] where we are greeted by the oddest receptionist and the dingiest rooms. Breakfast languishes forlornly in the room and comprises one stale roll, one cake, one capsule for the coffee machine. Views from the window look out over once prosperous, now derelict factories.

When we enquire as to somewhere to eat tonight – today is a Sunday and everywhere in catholic Italy is shut – there is much shrieking, arm waving and gesticulation towards anywhere but here. Fifty metres up the road we see a sign for BAR and Kiyomi Restorante Giapponese.[2] All you can eat sushi for 23e and cold beers. We devour platefuls, then more platefuls.

Several photos depicting members of Lug Velesa in a procession of the masked individuals at the end of the winter period. Here you can see them walking to the house followed by the bagpipes player. Then, knocking at the door and blessing of the household for which they were rewarded. Finally there is gathering around the fire, jumping over it and dancing. Similar forms of this procession are spread all over Serbia and in many other Slavic countries.
