Is it weird that I knew how to mask well as a child but now I can't? I used to be amazing at containing my hyperactivity and paying attention but around 5th grade it went down hill. Is this normal??

The Scream – Edvard Munch 1893
Yesterday, I was at an outdoor concert in an idyllic setting listening to some of my favourite music and something fascinating occurred to me. I was less than 5 minutes into the music and I realised I was bored. Some part of me was screaming an existential scream, knowing I was going to be sat there like this for the next couple of hours. It was an admission to…

when you're autistic and/or adhd, letting yourself get weird and a little embarrassing is an important part of unmasking and finding your authentic self
never be ashamed to just exist authenticly and don't be an ass about other people living without a sense that they need to hide parts of themselves from the world.

hate when ppl only view being autistic/adhd/neurodivergent as a bad thing
bc yes i will have a breakdown if it is to loud or a noise is to high
but also the other day i listened to a song and it triggered the happy chemicals and spent thirty minutes jumping around my room and spinning and stimming and it was literally the happiest ive ever been in years

anyone else stay home for a while and be like "hmmmm been acting fine lately. maybe i'm not autistic." and then you have one (1) social interaction and you're like ah. the Autism strikes again.

maybe unpopular opinion but probably one of the least useful pieces of advice I've ever got as an auDHD person to the question of "how tf does one make friends" was to go and join clubs/groups that do hobbies I enjoy. Not only does this not actually answer the question of how to make friends (yknow, how to approach people, how to start a conversation, how to appear friendly enough that they don't immediately reject you for existing, how to actually keep them as friends later on, etc), but also the chance of me choosing to force myself into the discomfort of "making smalltalk with random strangers" is absolutely nonexistent when the alternative of engaging with a hyperfixation is not only socially acceptable but even encouraged

Autistic eddie munson this, autistic robin Buckley that. What about autistic steve Harrington? What about the little audhd kid who wasn't in a safe place, a safe home, to unmask. To be born how you are and sniffed out that something is wrong with you, to spend hours in the bathroom, alone. Learning how to mimic tone and expressions.
To spend years masking until when the day comes where you have a best friend just like you, a boyfriend, a brother, just like you. To work that mask off of yourself, and finally see who you are. Crying in the same mirror you practiced in because you dont recognize yourself happy, safe, and loved.
