The only time you can remember having your birthday celebrated was at school. It was the closest thing you had to a birthday anyways. The little goody bag your teacher would make and the birthday song sang to you by your classmates. Though your mother never showed up to parent lunch, or gave you presents, or even acknowledged your birthday—you still blindly thought she was a good person then.
If you had done well in school, at practice, and at home—she’d gift you with new ice skating equipment. Something she was going to give to you anyways, but tried to do it as positive reinforcement as a kid. The other positive reinforcement she gave just so you’d get in the ice? A form of alone/bonding time with her. She’d only discuss what was necessary, eyes strayed away from your own.
You were so blind to her manipulation, getting you into the sport only for her to use it as a weapon against you. There were times you enjoyed the sport, but it’s hard not to think of your mother when you enter on the rink since you’ve spent most of your childhood with her on it.
Once she got arrested and you were moved to live with your older brother—he tried to celebrate your birthday. For a few years you wanted to forget about it and you had, you never celebrated it except for your brother’s family leaving notes on your desk when you had stayed with them.
And now today was your birthday.
You had gone to bed with a slight twinge of hope in your heart that a birthday spent with your girlfriend would be different.
It was 7:43AM, in seven minutes Wanda would be reaching to turn her alarm off. You usually don’t wake up this early, used to sleeping in while Wanda left for practice, but today you couldn’t help it. You had been wondering how she’d greet you when she woke up. What a birthday would be like with someone who loved you.
She looked surprised to find you awake after she turned her alarm off, puffy eyes widening just a bit.
“Woah, what’s got you up so early?”
You smiled, “nothing.”
“Hmm,” she pressed a kiss to your forehead before throwing the sheets off of her, “I’m not complaining.”
You felt giddy almost, a childlike joy overtaking you. Would she take you to dinner? You’ve heard that’s what couples do at work. Or would she take you somewhere? Would she give you a gift?
“I have practice until later today, but I should be back tonight—like 1PM?”
“Okay,” you chirped from under the covers, excited to get another kiss from her before she wondered into the bathroom to put her hair back. It only takes her a minute, throwing her jersey on loosely and pulling her bag over her shoulder, her keys jangling as they hang out of her pocket.
“Be back later, love you.”
“Love you.”
It made your heart twinge just a bit at the fact that she got up and left without saying anything. Maybe mornings weren’t the normal time to say happy birthday yet?
You spent time doing work from home, finishing tasks your boss assigned you to do. It made time fly and before you realized it was almost 12PM. You were about to get ready for the day but stopped when you received a text from Wanda, telling you that she won’t be back until later.
That’s fine. She’s probably just picking up something. It felt selfish, all of these thoughts felt self-centered. This day shouldn’t be about you, you shouldn’t expect it, but here you are. So you put off getting ready, wanting to be freshly put together when Wanda came through the door.
1PM turned to 3PM and 3PM turned to 6PM.
You received a few texts from your phone, seeing family and a few work friends wish you a happy birthday. It mattered, but it didn’t satisfy the way your heart was breaking. She would remember, she’s not your mom—she’s above ignoring such a day.
You know she cares, so why in this moment are you beginning to question everything? Heart turning from glass to stone as you recall memories, ones usually sweet, and overthink her words and actions as hatred. Maybe this whole time shes been showing how much she dislikes you but you’ve been blind to it just like how you had been with your mother.
It was dinner time now, and you’ve seen videos on social media and heard on the grape vine that couples go out to a nice dinner on a special event, such as a birthday. This could be a surprise, maybe when she got back she’d be dressed and ready, driving you to your favorite place.
She hasn’t yet called to texted you, giving you the idea that she’s coming home soon like she said she would be. You took the time to get ready, enjoying every minute for once until you were dressed nicely. You found yourself on her couch, waiting while scrolling on your phone.
You checked back and the time read seven.
After watching TV, the time read eight.
Until nine, until ten, until your phone lit up the room with her contact information. You let it go to voicemail, not wanting to let her know about how you’re crying in front of the bathroom mirror.
It’s ugly, dry heaving cries filling the bathroom. Each one making your throat and head hurt just that much more. Your heart ached. You felt naive, stupid to believe someone would genuinely love you. Turns out on your birthday she would leave you alone.
You decide to sleep, guessing Wanda wouldn’t be back until way later at this point. You had hoped to avoid her but by stepping out of the bathroom you walked right into.
“Oh!—oh.”
You know she can see the glimmer on your cheeks, how your eyes are all puffy and bloodshot. You felt choked seeing her. She’s in a different outfit, hockey back still slung behind her like you’ve become familiar with.
“What’s wrong—?”
“Nothing,” you say, brushing past her to quickly grab the pajamas you wore this morning and shutting yourself in the bathroom again. She had apparently left to take a phone call from her dad, thankfully giving you space to calm down, collect yourself, and crawl into bed. Now lying in her bed feels weird; it doesn’t feel like home as much anymore. Fear grew in you at the thought, what if she’s going to kick you out soon? You’ve heard that happens when relationships fall apart, and the pain you felt thinking that sentence over took you.
You tried to stop the upcoming crying session, pressing your hands into your closed eyes or staring at the ceiling. You’ve had heartbreak, just not one with a relationship, it’s be a new kind of pain. Sharing intimacy with someone only for them to use you in the end.
The door creaking, signaled Wanda’s presence. She sighed seeing how you’ve turned away from her, sitting on her side to lean an arm and rest it on your thigh.
“Hey love, how are you?”
“I’m fine.”
You ignored her attempts to console you, and in a really really strange way you congratulated yourself—you weren’t able to do this with your mother and you saw how that ended up.
But oh how you wanted to turn around and hug her, hear her heart beat as you lie on her chest, feel her press a kiss to your cheek and tell you everything’s going to be okay. Once you hear her breathing even out you let out a few more tears, already missing Wanda even though she’s laying right behind you.
The next morning Wanda’s shocked for a different reason. You wake up at a normal time, but you’re complete off. She’s decided that maybe you need space, maybe something happened that you’re just keeping to yourself and will tell her later. She’s not just decided, she’s hoping because she can’t stand to see how you’ve been. You’re a shell of it. You don’t kiss her back, you’ve stopped engaging in conversation, and you barely look at her.
It’s now been two days since your birthday and Wanda’s grown increasingly worried. You’ve always climbed in bed, back facing hers for the third night in a row and it’s enough for Wanda to pull up your brother’s contact, raising her phone to her ear after hitting the call button.
“Hey, this sounds very intrusive, but has something personal happened within the family recently?”
“Uhh no—why?”
She explains how you’ve been, how sudden and drastic of a change your mood has been.
“Can you tell me what day you remember her starting to drop?”
“Two days ago.”
“I’m not going to assume you did because I fucking hope this didn’t happen. Two days ago was her birthday Wanda, is there—?”
His voice trails off as the room freezes. That’s why you were up early, full of smiles and joyful expressions. That’s why you’ve become distant, looking uncomfortable any time she expressed her love.
“Oh no. No, no, no, no, no—“ she mumbles, tears growing in her eyes, “shit—I forgot. I forgot. I don’t know how, but I did.”
“Shh, hey calm down,” your brother says over the voice, tone stern and light, “this doesn’t take away my frustration with you, but calm down—you’re not going to get anything done with a heart rate of 120. Apologize and make it up to her. You really don’t even have to do much—you can literally just get her a small gift and wished her a happy birthday and she’d be over the moon.”
“No—no, she deserves more than that.”
“She does. The intention of what I just said was to show how low the bar was set. She’s not had a ‘birthday,’ Wanda—so anything you could’ve done yesterday would’ve meant the world to her.”
“It would’ve and I’ve done nothing,” she says and he agrees.
“Yes. But I know your intentions, I know you’ve just forgotten—but she doesn’t. Just make it up for her, be intentional and loving and she’ll come back around.”
So that’s what Wanda set to do. It was late but she still left, driving in her car to the nearest cheapest store to grab decorations. It started with decorations before it moved to gifts before it moved to cake. She set out to create a basic birthday day for you.
It was a sight to wake up to, finding balloons on your ceiling and streamers hanging around her apartment. She was downstairs with your family, your brother smiling and recording you once you’ve begun to walk out from her bedroom.
“What—?”
“Happy birthday.”
You take in everything as best as you can with how your eyes have begun to grow wet, blurring your vision. It looks like the photos you searched on wiki as a kid of what a birthday decorated room looked like. Your brother continues to hold the camera poised on you, emotions overcoming him and his wife. The entire time Wanda’s been standing in the corner, growing nervous when your attention lands on her.
She’s holding her arms out wide when she saw you take a few steps towards her. You’re wrapped up so tight in her hold; your deep cries breaking her heart all the more.
She coos, “I’m so sorry, love. I’m so sorry.”
“You set all this up for me—when did you have time,” you ask, voice squeaking from how sore your throat has become.
“It is all for you, I stayed up late last night to set this up.”
And her efforts didn’t go to waste. You wonder just how much money she burnt through last night seeing what she had bought. Your brother had an itinerary, moving you around to each event.
You had to stop and cry multiple times—feeling grateful and also a little bit embarrassed about being so emotional over something so minor to most people. The whole time they kept validating your feelings, full of understanding and kind words to help you get along. There was your favorite food, dessert, presents, and your favorite people.
Once your brother’s family had to leave—saying something about having to get Tyler to hockey practice since he has a game coming up soon—Wanda pulled out another gift.
“I thought of you when I saw this,” she said, taking out the necklace to place it around your neck. It had the word, “loved,” on it, diamond encrusted and small.
“Why’d you think of me?”
“The man asked me to choose out a necklace with a saying that made me think of you. I wanted you to have something that reminded you of how loved you are.”
You begin to tear up yet again, laughing dryly as you try to wipe away the tears, “I need to stop crying, I’m going to get a headache.”
“I’ll just take care of you if you do.”
“You’re so cheesy,” you laugh more, but you thank her with a squeeze to her arm.
“I’m serious though. I’m really sorry for not treating you the way you deserved on your birthday. I love you, and I’ve never been this serious about anyone before.”
“I love you too,” you say, kissing her back when she leans to kiss you; feeling like your hearts begun to be placed back together when you feel her wipe away at your tears.

Rating Marvel Girl/Jean Grey’s Outfits Throughout Her Comic Book History
Tumblr media
Ground Rules
I’m gonna start from the left top side, moving to the right and going in a row, top to bottom
My opinions are highly subjective, keep that in mind
I may discuss some costumes that are not pictured and will add to the quiz if I find a good image of said costumes
Note: Less information will be stated regarding the origin of/first issue that each suit featured in, but I will name them regarding their specific storyline/universe etc. so you have an easier time finding out more about each costume
Warning: LONG POST BELOW THE CUT.

Video Review > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yhTDOrjeq0 <
First Class Jean Grey - kicking it off, we have the first of the many “original Marvel Girl” look redesigns with First Class Jean Grey. To subtly tie with the movies, this barely visible (on the cover) costume absolutely is a suit, created to go along with the other First Class mutant suits. While not being as iconic as some of her other “classic” looks, it does hold merit as it’s a simple, but slick design. Starting off well, we have a decent score of 6/10.
Time-Displaced/X-Men Blue Marvel Girl - continuing up with the “redesigned original” suits, we have a relatively new Jean design, as the 5 original X-Men got sent to the future as teenagers and their costumes got a redesign to better fit the modern era. I have a weird relationship with this costume as I really enjoy it for what it’s worth, but I can see it’s flaws too. Trying to pay homage to many emblematic Jean looks, it trips up a bit in trying to stand out on its own. In spite of this dichotomy, I just can’t help but love it, so here’s my 8/10. (PS. This outfit looks good jacketless too, so that’s another big plus!)
Classic Black Queen  - so basically Jean cosplaying as Emma? I have never been a big fan of the Hellfire club’s fashion principles as it’s either dominatrix or 1800′s nobleperson, with little-to-no in-betweens. My only major positive are the latex gloves, which really suit Jean for some reason. Still, I can’t help but club it on the back of the head, with the score of 3/10.
X-Terminator/Green X-Factor Jean Grey -  get ready, as we’ll see variations of this suit a few more times before we leave. Playing it a little too safe, this suit really isn’t doing anything too revolutionary, being another “Marvel Girl in yellow and green” variation.  As unfair as it is to give this iconic Jean suit a low score, I really can’t dish out more than a 5/10. Don’t get me wrong - not a bad suit by any means, just a little too plain for my tastes.
Red X-Factor Jean Grey - our second variation of the “redesigned” X-Factor suit for Ms. Grey. Trying to establish Jean’s quote-unquote new color scheme, this suit was revolutionary for it’s time, dressing our favorite redhead from head to toe in crimson & gold. Hey at least we know why Jean lead the X-Men Red team! All that aside, as basic and uninspired as this costume is, it suits Jean like a glove. I can’t help but give it the weirdly high score of 7/10, even if I can’t put my finger on why I really dig this suit.
Revolution Jean Grey - switching it up, Jean donned this look when she and Betsy Braddock (time for a selfish plug for Betsy’s costume post, which you can check out >here<) switched powers, rendering Jean purely a telepath but with the cool bonus of Betsy’s astral projection. Once again, a very strong entry within Jean’s wardrobe, with the crystal clear influences of Dark Phoenix, only working in it’s favor. Again, being simple in it’s execution just elevates this suit for me, with another strong score of 7/10 being due.
X-Men Red Jean Grey - leading the X-Men Red team, Jean donned this modern classic, masterfully inspired by her arguably most iconic suit - the Jim Lee/X-Men Series look. Pioneering not only Jean wearing primarily blue, but also having red as an accent color, as opposed to her usual green & yellow combo, makes for an absolutely perfect modern redesign (in my opinion, even doing it better than her classic suit). A virtually flawless design, makes for a virtually flawless score of 9/10.
Krakoa/Vintage Dress Marvel Girl - simultaneously being one of her oldest AND newest designs, Jean absolutely rocks the evocative mini dress & statement headpiece combo. Spotting her usual colors, Marvel Girl couldn’t be summed up better in an outfit, better than this one. Being a product of it’s time isn’t a problem here, as the 70′s and 80′s are always in fashion. To put it simply, here’s my rad score for this equally rad dress - 8/10.
X-Men Gold/Jim Lee Jean Grey - this is THE Jean Grey outfit. Most people grew up watching our favorite psychic in the X-Men Animated Series with this exact costume on, fightning baddies and honing her abilities. To be fair, I personally don’t have any personal attachments to this suit and even tho I can’t deny it’s icon status in pop culture, it really doesn’t capture the Jean Grey spirit as some of her other costumes do. Before you grab your pitchforks, I don’t dislike the colors and the headpiece, but that’s as far as I’ll go. I know it’s my hottest take yet, but it’s a 6/10 for me, purely for it’s mainstream appeal.
Classic Phoenix - ah, another absolute centerpiece in Jean’s history, as we all know the story. To be fair, there’s really nothing to comment on, even if this suit was the first to introduce the phoenix design into Jean’s other regalia, inspiring many later costumes (even some where the Phoenix Force was absent!). 8/10 - iconic score for an iconic look.
Original Suit Redesign Marvel Girl - in the comics, not soon after their debut, Jean herself redesigned the X-Men costumes, tweaking them very slightly with hers being the most changed of all. Introducing the now emblematic headpiece, this redesign finally allowed Jean to show some personality. Even if it just changed the colour belt and added the headpiece, it was a step in the right direction, so onwards to better suits we go with a 3/10.
New X-Men Jean Grey - being a staple in comic history, the Morisson run redefined the X-Men, redesigning them in the process as well. Now, as good as the story is, I’m not a huge fan of any of the redesigns, especially Jean’s. Giving them some very bland, almost casual clothes and dubbing them “costumes” was all that was done. The only thing that I can say I like with confidence is Jean’s jacket, as it gives some Rogue-inspired flair to this unimaginative piece of Grey’s wardrobe, and with that a dull score of 3/10.
Original Marvel Girl - next up we have Jean’s original suit, straight off the page of their first outing as the X-Men. A simple blue and gold suit, with not much going for it was the absolute reason it didn’t stick and even if they are iconic and managed to solidify the X-Men’s signature colour scheme, the original suits were plain. For introducing our favorite X-Men I have to add those couple of points, rounding up to a 4/10 for icon status alone.
Blue X-Factor Jean Grey - last of the X-Factor suits for Jean, we of course, have it in the classic blue & gold and I have to say - for being the third it definitely improved on the past X-Factor uniforms with a better headpiece and overall a still simple, but chic color scheme and design. I do have to say that I like it the most out of all of them, maybe it’s the color scheme talking but I have to leave the last X-Factor look with a 8/10!
Age of Apocalypse Jean Grey - now, now settle down, I have already stated that I’m not the biggest fan of the AoA redesigns as they literally strip our favorite X-Men of their most iconic features. That is absolutely the case with Jean as well, as her hair was cut (something that didn’t work with Storm and definitely doesn’t work with Grey as well) and she was that face-paint thing (that I also am on record saying I dislike with Betsy, and I feel the same here) plus a weird loose-fitting bodysuit. Radical redesigns don’t equal good redesigns and this suit perfectly shows that off. An all around unpleasant look, makes for a bitter scoring with a just 2/10.
Dark Phoenix - our staple evil Jean Grey, with her iconic Dark Phoenix get-up. Now I know it’s a glorified recolour of her regular Phoenix suit, but like I said - Jean in red is right up my alley for some reason! Another plus in my book is that VOLUME that Jean has in regards to hairstyle, just look at the thing! Pleasing to look at and pleasing to rate, we have to give a fiery 8/10!
Ultimate Jean Grey - leaving on a sour note, we have the Ultimate design. Again, as I’ve already previously stated the Ultimate designs are just HORRIBLE. Like the AoA costumes, they strip the most iconic parts of each character and just put them in boring, at best and unbearable, at worst outfits. This again is a very weak entry in the Ultimates costume gallery, so leaving off our main list with a underwhelming 1/10. (the one point is absolutely because of the hoop earrings, and no I won’t take critisism on that front)
Bonus Rankings below the cut!
(special thanks to artist Mark Eastwood, @mrkstwd on Instagram for the following images!)
Tumblr media
All-New X-Men Marvel Girl - another “reimagined classic suit” (yeah we’re still not done), this time with Jean owning that accent green like a boss. Overly detailed is the suit’s middle name with many purely visual elements with no purpose, but hey - not everything has to have purpose in a hero costume. Some people just want to kick ass in style! As stylish as it is, and as much as I like it I have to admit that it just lacks that umph that a lot of Jean’s other suits just have. Can’t really tell what’s missing, but I know damn well that I’m dishing out a steaming 7/10.
Tumblr media
Green Phoenix - purely astonishing (pun intended. The colors, the design, even the questionable mask really work well in this costume, brandishing the perfect mix of edge and elegance. Under Viper’s influence, Jean really took a page out of her fashion journal and added her own unique spin on the “green & mean” vibes. Something just clicks here, and even with it’s flaws I have to give it the (almost) perfect score of 9/10. (also the Poison Ivy vibes are not lost on me, but that’s another univers-- ahem, can of beans entirely)
Tumblr media
Future X-Men Blue Jean Grey - so you remember Time-Displaced Jean right? She designed her All-New X-Men costume herself (above) and saw a glimpse of her future self in this outfit. Confusing timelines aside though, as much as I have a taste for Jean in blue, this outfit is just lacking in my eyes. I don’t know if it’s the absence of another primary/complimentary colour, or the weird 90′s jacket throwing me off but I have to shell out my costumary 5/10, for the effort...
Tumblr media
Here Comes Tomorrow/Phoenix Egg Jean Grey - badass. That’s the word I’d describe this barely-a-bra and set of pants-- ahem, costume. The weird spikes, the edgy bat imagery, those claws and that fiery complexion really just redefine Jean as this almost goddess-like figure walking amongst mortals. I’m sorry but this suit is just too (ironically) cool, so to contrast it, a flaming-hot 8/10 is due!
Tumblr media
Mutant Hunter Jean Grey - now, don’t get startled, Jean never hunted any of her fellow mutants down. Basically, you all remember the X-Factor suits right? Right. I mean how could you forget, there’s a whopping three of them! To the public, the classic five X-Men suited-up in jumpsuits, posing as “mutant hunters” to throw the masses off of their trail and mask their appearances as X-Factor! While it’s nothing impressive or eye-catching, as a one-off, we could’ve gotten something much worse. The soft blue really works in Grey’s favor as it’s something we haven’t seen her wear a lot. For it’s absolute lack of detail and glamour, I have to hand out my share of 3/10 though.
Tumblr media
Phoenix Resurrection  - now we’re talking. Is this costume yet another Phoenix recolour? Yes. Is this costume very pleasing to the eye, with a unique colour scheme and satisfying design? Also yes. I can’t find anything to even complain about here, so this is the list’s first 10/10 as wow, I can’t take my eyes off of our favorite redhead here.
Tumblr media
White Phoenix (Silver & Gold Variant) - to start off, yes I know the split isn’t centered but according to PHOTOSHOP it is, so I just accepted it. Next up, I do realise that those are technically 2 different suits but they’re basically the very same, with one just being the gold variant. And no, I won’t be splitting them up as this is my list, so if it bother you I invite you to rank Jean’s suits and lets have a debate on her best costume! Enough rambling, we have yet another Phoenix recolour, but we all are suckers when characters go God Mode, when they are at their strongest and just don white to show themselves off. This is Jean’s take, with a beautiful mix of the Phoenix suits and those gold/silver variants. For both of them, I present the (not-so) even score of 9/10, as yes I am but a man who gets weak in the knees when characters just decide to become all-powerful and put on those white costumes.
Tumblr media
Hellfire Gala 2021 Jean Grey - absolutely outgunning the competition on the blue & gold carpet, Jean pretty much stole the show along with Storm & Emma Frost as undoubtedly the best dressed at the event. This costume was so adored that a variation of it became her regular suit, and we can see why. This costume pays homage to so many of Jean’s suits that I can’t even being listing each one off! Another flawless score for our fashion icon is at hand, with another 10/10.
Tumblr media
Hellfire Gala 2022, Outfit #1 Jean Grey - so... I just realised that Jean had 3 looks for the 2022 Hellfire Gala... and I couldn’t be happier! Stealing a page out of Emma’s book from our last year, in our first get-up, Jean is absolutely showing off that Phoenix fire but in her signature green with a statement cape and matching bodysuit, and even if it’s my least favorite out of her 3 outfits, I have to round up my first score to a dashing 7/10, as I feel more high-end concepts could’ve easily been explored and incorporated around the design. Still a strong start to this year’s shenanigans nonetheless!
Tumblr media
Hellfire Gala 2022, Outfit #2 Jean Grey - dazzling and pretty, Jean’s second outfit is very eye-catching, with a soft eye-pleasing colour palette at the same time. But, and it’s a big but, (lmao) we saw the “Marvel Girl” pastiche done last year, with this just being almost an inferior outfit as last years’ was just that flawless. That said it’s still a strong contender and definitely bumps up Jean as “best-dressed” once again this year, so here’s my runway-worthy 8/10!
Tumblr media
Hellfire Gala 2022, Outfit #3 Jean Grey - saving up the best for last, we have this ETHEREAL gown to finish up the post and wow what and ending it is! I don’t know if the theme this year is space or stars or whatever, but all of our favorite heroes just decided to include those star patterns all-around and I can’t say it was a bad choice either! My crowned favorite, this is just Jean at her best... and yes the “crowned” part is a pun as Jean is fit to be a royal with just her elegance alone! You don’t have to be a telepath to know what score I’mma give out, but for those of you still wondering, it’s a 10/10.
Do let me know if I missed any major Jean costumes and thanks for making it this far, you’re all the MVPs!

Remember that moment in ITSV, when Miles first meets his world's Spider-Man and their spider senses do the thing?
Tumblr media
The background behind Peter is as we'd expect; the classic red and blue.
But at first Miles' background is green and purple, two colors he's never associated with at all throughout the movie. As the moment goes on, it shifts to match Peter's.
