36. ...to give up control

Anna wants to scream, to shout until her voice is hoarse, until tears fall from her eyes. She doesn't. She remains eerily calm, standing with her back straight, although her fingers itch to grab her dagger and run.

She doesn't run. She stands her ground.

"You love me?" Martin asks, bewildered.

"Yes. I love you. I fell onto love like one would fall onto a sword. What can I do?"

"Well," Martin says. "You could come closer, for a start."

"Nonsense." She shakes her head, sunlight falling over her like a crown. "You don't want this. I'm terrible. I'm foul-mouthed and foul-tempered. You need to be free."

She looks at him, and her eyes are sad. "You deserve to be free."

"Anna," Martin sighs, and walks over to her. He can see the unshed tears in her eyes, and the utter sorrow that lies behind them. "You know I love you. I love you as you are. You don't have to be the one in control. Sometimes it's nice when someone else takes.. initiative. Let me, just this once."

He cups her face in his hands, and a tear slips free. He brushes it away from freckled skin with his thumb.

"Yes," she whispers. "Yes."

And he kisses her. A gentle brush of lips, soft and wanting.
