To start the discussion on this involved topic, I am beginning with this definition and a list.⠀ ⠀ Ambiguous loss is uncertain or incomplete loss.⠀ ⠀ The points on this list are areas of ambiguous loss my partner or I have experienced as an outcome of his history of childhood trauma. Some points are fairly clear-cut while others are subtle. For example: a change to a family schedule is a loss. Yet, we might be hesitant to identify it as such AND we might not know how to navigate our emotions about the change. The Truth About DMH non profits - The MFT associate looking for a job!

So you graduated from an accredited college and you are now looking for a job to not only pay off those student loans, but to earn enough money so you can ball out (pay rent, bills, and get groceries). That’s not asking for too much! after all, you did you dirty work, you went to school, got a higher education....now you’re thinking...you got to pay me! So you go to indeed.com and begin your search...and you’re like...let me get something steady...a non profit job! yes! i’d like to heal the world and get benefits while doing it. Here is what you need to know about non profits and mental health.

1. paperwork! paperwork! holy crap...there is a ton of paperwork! for each week you’re likely to write about 40 long notes, complete some assessments and treatment plans, update goals, complete a gigantic intake packet, etc...etc. It’s a lot. it’s overwhelming...and seems like it makes not sense. It’s important to note that all agencies have similar paperwork....one is not really better than the other in that they have to implement the same forms and format that each agency does. Why?? Because each agency gets their contract from the same entity. Department of Mental Health. The Department of Mental Health receives tax payer dollars to help individuals in need. This is a good thing! But it has be operationalized somehow. Those monies also have to be justified to the public in some clear way. Enter...the paperwork! If you can think about the paperwork as being a type of way to justify your good work...then you will survive! If you get bogged down in wanting to change the system, you may hit a wall in your tenure at a non profit agency. Yes there are easier ways to do it...but changing it on such a large scale is what makes change difficult.
