Bonnie Somerville as Dr. Christa Lorenson, a mature first-year resident. She was married with a son who died of brain cancer. Her experience and her divorce inspired her to attend medical school (season 1).[7]

Melanie Chandra as Dr. Malaya Pineda, a first-year resident (seasons 1–2). She went to medical school and did her internship at Angels Memorial, and is more familiar with the ER. She is a lesbian, who was once involved with a resident when she was a medical student.

William Allen Young as Dr. Rollie Guthrie, an ER attending physician with a very nurturing style; he takes Angus under his wing in his first days in the ER. Guthrie's wife committed suicide, a death that strained his relationship with his son, a surgeon. During season 2, Guthrie is diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, and undergoes corrective neurological surgery to delay the onset of symptoms. Guthrie had a daughter who died from carbon monoxide poisoning while Guthrie tried to save his son from a similar death.

Harry Ford as Dr. Angus Leighton, a first-year resident. His father is on the hospital board. He feels overshadowed by that and by the achievements of his older brother, a former resident, but slowly grows in confidence. In his second year he is encouraged to transfer and become a surgical resident.

Benjamin Hollingsworth as Dr. Mario Savetti, a first-year resident. He grew up poor and sees emergency medicine as his way out. He worked as a bartender before medical school.

Luis Guzmán as Jesse Salander, known as "Mama". A senior nurse who manages the residents, Jesse is tough but caring and supportive of the students. He and Dr. Rorish have a long-term, close friendship.

Boris Kodjoe as Dr. Will Campbell, Chief of Surgery. In season 2 he is assigned as the new Chief of the combined Surgery and Emergency medicine department in order to save costs, causing strife between him and Rorish. Campbell has a disabled daughter (season 2–3; recurring in season 1).

Jillian Murray as Dr. Heather Pinkney, a surgical resident who becomes involved with Mario.(season 2; recurring in season 1). He quickly ends it when he hears about her side relationship with Dr. Campbell. She gets in further trouble when it's revealed she's providing Angus with Adderall. When confronted by Campbell, she threatens to turn their past relationship into a sexual harassment case.

Women can’t even have a section of the gym to themselves.

Women-only exercise areas in gyms and fitness clubs violate a state law banning discrimination based on gender, the Connecticut Supreme Court ruled Tuesday.

The 6-0 decision written by Chief Justice Richard Robinson overturned a lower court ruling and an earlier decision by a state human rights official. The case involved two men who complained about women-only exercise areas at two gyms — an Edge Fitness Club in Stratford and a Club Fitness in Bloomfield.

The case drew high interest from a variety of advocacy groups that submitted briefs to the court.

Religious groups said separate workout areas are important for women whose religious beliefs bar them from exercising in front of men. Other groups, including GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders, said such gender exemptions can lead to unintended consequences and have been used to discriminate against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people.

Several questions arose. Should women be protected from the ogling of men they believe are objectifying them? Do women-only workout areas discriminate against men who have to wait in line to use equipment in the general public area? Should lesbian women be barred from the women-only areas because they might objectify women?

In the ruling, Robinson wrote there is no implied customer gender privacy exception to the ban against gender-based discrimination in the state's Public Accommodation Act. The two gyms that are defendants in the case argued there was such an exception.

State law exempts bathrooms, sleeping areas, and locker rooms from anti-gender-discrimination laws, but doesn't specifically mention female-only workout areas.

“A reading of (the law) to imply a gender privacy exception, although presumably to benefit women, could also negatively affect the rights of women in a different way,” Robinson wrote. “Such an exception could be invoked to exclude women based on the privacy interests of men and could justify discrimination against transgender individuals because some customers, ‘due to modesty, find it uncomfortable’ to be around such people.”

Robinson wrote that the legislature is better suited to determine where to specifically limit anti-discrimination protections, saying it's a public policy issue.

A message seeking comment was left for an attorney for Edge Fitness

Mario Borelli, a lawyer for Club Fitness, said he was disappointed with the court’s ruling. He said it was too early to say whether there will be an appeal to the federal court system.

“The court’s decision pointed to the legislature for the venue to make a decision on these types of spaces,” he said.

The two businesses argued that gyms, unlike other places such as public swimming pools and beaches, are male-dominated locations where women-only areas are needed.

Ben Klein, an attorney for GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders, known as GLAD, said his organization doesn't have a position on women-only workout areas, but opposes a general customer gender privacy rule that could unintentionally discriminate based on gender in other instances.

“Connecticut has spoken loudly and clearly that those types of exclusions based on sex are prohibited," he said. “We are very heartened by the decision because it actually maintains the strength of sex discrimination laws.”

The American Civil Liberties Union of Connecticut argued women-only workout areas are illegal under state anti-discrimination laws.

“The gym operator has to do its level best to stop discrimination in the form of harassment,” said Dan Barrett, legal director of the ACLU of Connecticut. "It can’t just say ‘Oh, well the solution is we’re going to make a workout space for the people who are being harassed.’"

Challenges to women-only workout areas have arisen in other states. Some lawsuits have been successful, but several states including Alaska, Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts and New Jersey have changed their gender discrimination laws to exclude fitness clubs.

Two weeks ago, you started your employment with Shelby Company Limited. You were employed by Lizzie Stark following some background checks as an assistant to Thomas Shelby.

But, you’ve forged everything on your resume. Your name, your age and your experience. Even your passport was forged. Your cousin was no other than Mario Changretta, the son of Luca Changretta. Not many people knew about Mario as, following his father’s death, he moved away and changed his identity so that he wouldn’t have a run in with Al Capone in Atlanta who took over the local liquor business on the East Coast.

You had no business with the Mafia. After all, you were only 19 years old. But, after your father’s passing due to illness, your family was struggling financially and Mario was the one who assisted you, your mother and your four younger siblings.

He had become a well known and very good counterfeiter, going by the name of Anthony Borelli. What he wanted more than anything else, even more than money, was revenge on Arthur Shelby, the man who killed his father, and bring down the Shelby empire just as his father had intended.

After providing financial support to your family, Mario asked you to help him with his plan and to gather as much information as you could gather on Thomas Shelby and his businesses.

You needed to gain Thomas Shelby’s trust while working for him, infiltrating his businesses so that your cousin could take him down along with his brother Arthur.

You reluctantly agreed and went from the 19 year old Y/N L/N to 24 year old Y/N Ricci with extensive secretarial experience.

But, unfortunately for you, Thomas Shelby himself would pick up on your lack of secretarial experience.

***Inexperience***

‘I am sorry Mr Shelby, these invitations have taken me much longer than I had anticipated’ you said at 8 o’clock, which was when you finally finished typing them up.

‘Well, they are done now. Have a seat’ Tommy instructed as you placed the invitations onto his large oak desk.

You sat down and Tommy poured you a glass of whiskey, which surprised you.

‘Tell my something about you Miss Ricci’ he said, curious about what made you come to Birmingham.

‘Tell you about me? Why do you want to know about me?’ you asked nervously as you’ve been sipping on your whiskey. The truth was, whilst you were meant to spy on Thomas Shelby, he intimidated you and you liked it in an absurd kind of way.

You had gotten nowhere with your investigations over the past two weeks. All you found out about Thomas Shelby’s was his private life. He has been single ever since his wife Grace died five years ago. You also found out that he visited certain establishments regularly and that he used to fuck his old secretary, Lizzie Stark and that she was now pregnant with his child. But none of this was of benefit to your cousin.

‘Ms Ricci?’ Tommy asked, noticing that your mind was rather preoccupied. He was handsome and it distracted you.

‘Yes Mr Shelby’ you said shyly, collecting your thoughts.

‘I want you to tell me about you because my old secretary employed you and you are clearly too inexperienced for this position’ Tommy smirked while enjoying his cigarette.

‘My name is Y/N Ricci and I am 24 and from Atlanta’ you said quickly, remembering your new identity.

‘I can read Ms Ricci. All of this information is on your resume. Tell me something about you that I don’t already know. Perhaps start with why you have lied on your resume’ Tommy chuckled. He didn’t appear to be angry.

‘I am sorry Mr Shelby, I just needed this job to look after my family’ you said quickly, not knowing what else to say.

‘So you are married eh?’ Tommy asked somewhat disappointed.

‘No, my mother is unable to work and I’ve got four small siblings who need to be taken care of. That’s why I needed this job. It pays better than factory work’ you explained with some embarrassment.

‘The things we do for our family, eh’ Tommy chuckled.

‘I am sorry Mr Shelby. Please do not fire me’ you begged.

‘Don’t worry, I have no intention of firing you. I enjoy your company in the office. You seem to always be happy and in a good mood. It’s nice for a change and I am sure you can learn on the job. I am just being careful Miss Ricci, hence my question’ Tommy explained, his eyes gazing over you as if he was checking you out.

‘Thank you Mr Shelby. I promise that I won’t disappoint you’ you were quick to say before finishing the last of your whiskey.

‘Do you like music Y/N?’ Tommy asked before correcting himself quickly. ‘May I call you Y/N?’ he then went on to ask.

‘Yes, you may and yes I do. Why are you asking?’ you asked with a shy smile.

‘I like to work while listening to music and I thought that, perhaps, you might as well. You should try it’ Tommy suggested before offering to drive you home. According to him, a young woman like you shouldn’t walk the streets of Birmingham on her own after dark.

You gladly accepted his offer and followed him to his Bentley.

You were drawn to him and you felt guilty for what you were feeling for him, knowing that he had killed your uncle.

He seemed kind and he was incredibly attractive. You wanted to continue to work for him, not doing your cousin’s dirty work and, despite having access to valuable information, you largely ignored it because of the way Tommy and the rest of his family was treating you.

Tommy was patient and you had thoughts about him that you probably shouldn’t have. He was twice your age and these thoughts were highly inappropriate. They were wild thoughts, erotic thoughts, thoughts of lust and desire.  

‘Y/N?’ Tommy said as he noticed you daydreaming once again and this is when you realised that he pulled up in front of your house.

‘Uhm thank you Mr Shelby’ you said, looking down into your lap with some embarrassment.

‘Call me Thomas, just like my last two secretaries, please…’ Tommy said with a warm smile and you nodded before an awkward silence erupted between you.

Unsure about the situation, you did something you would immediately regret. You leaned in and kissed him, tentatively, like a peck on the lips between two shy school children.

‘Y/N, I am flattered but I am little old for you, eh?’ Tommy chuckled and you nodded, your cheeks flushing red.

‘I am so sorry. I didn’t mean to do this and I don’t know what just came over me’ you mumbled. You wanted to sink into the car seat there and then.

‘It’s alright Y/N. It never happened’ Tommy chuckled before wishing you a good night, flustered by your actions.

That night you couldn’t get Tommy out of your head. He was on your mind in a way no other man had ever been before. Why you felt like this for him, you didn’t know.

But it wasn’t just Tommy who was on your mind. Despite what he had told you, Tommy couldn’t forget about the kiss you gave him. A small peck that didn’t leave his mind for the entire night.
