1, 4, 12, 14, 15?
I love how chill and critically aware the I Claudius fandom is. The MC fandom is just so entertaining to be a part of. And I love the corner of the Succession fandom I've found myself in.
4. I don't ship Nibrahim but I love reading @faintingheroine's takes on it. Her perspective on it really shines a light on certain elements of the narrative and assumptions within the show.
12. @redxluna has the best takes on MC and on Hürrem. And @mc-critical is so insightful and is one of the nicest people in the MC fandom. Once again @faintingheroine's fics are amazing. And @minetteskvareninova is smart, witty, insightful and I always love interacting with her.
14. Kösem and Kemankeş
15. Hürrem of course!

Kunze and Levay call you up and say "Hey, we've decided that we don't want to bother with Rebecca anymore. You can take over -- you have full rights to stage an English language production (or any other language production of your choice) and you can do whatever you want." What do you do?
Oh I wish!!
1) Change the translation. I won’t say redo the whole thing because there are parts I do like, but I’d want to change some things I’ve noticed. I’d also like to add more dialogue from the book and make it a slightly closer adaptation.
2) on that note, change the manner of Rebecca’s death back to what it was in the book and not the Hitchcock movie.
3) Transfer it to a full west end theatre with the London cast because they are amazing.
4) for fun, get my local community theatre to do it so I can play “Ich” just once 😂

1, 12, 25, 13 for MC?
1. the character everyone gets wrong
Oh God, being a more historically minded fan means that if I consider this for too long it simply becomes a moment of
Tumblr media
The two that immediately sprang to mind, however, were Mustafa, who is forever stuck between extremes of either idealization or false accusations of being a "traitor" and robbed of his complexity as a result, and Cihangir, for whom no one ever bothers to challenge that foolish concept of him "dying of grief" over a half-brother he barely would've ever known.
12. the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them
Say it with me, everyone: you can't disparage Nurbanu for the same behaviors you praised Hürrem for.
(Bonus mention of how Nigar didn't spend full seasons as a central figure within the show, establishing the hub of servants and their own trials, to be reduced to Ibrahim's "side piece" and nothing more.)
13. worst blorboficiation
For the writers, it's their obsession with Mustafa, but, for some viewers, it's their need to sanctify either Hürrem or Mahidevran while vilifying the other.
25. common fandom complaint that you're sick of hearing
So, I know these people mean well. I really know that they do. But I am so tried of hearing people launch into debates about who Hürrem did or did not have to bow to. It's become such a, "Yes, yes, we know!" topic to me.
(I'd include the fact that, yes, the title of Haseki Sultan was created for Hürrem and it's wrong for it to applied to Mahidevran if it weren't for the fact that I still have people try to convince me of incorrect titles for the latter all the time.)

Id like to say thank you especially to Margridaurnauds for the input! I've been trying to study and learn more about the culture since I began reading specifically about Gwyn Ap Nudd in both your stories and the actual figure -- it's just slow because there's. From what I've seen, so much information or contradicting texts lately, which is why I wanted that input. Again, thank you so much
I'm glad it helped! And shout out to @margridarnauds as well - also I think it's great that you thought to ask.
You're probably not going to get a single 'ultimately correct' answer, because one Welsh person is not a monolith. That's why research and respect are the two main things to keep in mind here, which it sounds like you're doing with your attitude of asking and thoughtfulness around cultural appropriation.
I'm really glad that we were able to get some good info, and it's worth keeping an eye on the thread in case anyone else participates too. <333

I'm sure you're going to get Joseph for the character bingo so......Swamp Rat Frankenstein Magneto?
……I will be wearing the fact that I knew exactly who that was without clarification like a badge of shame.
Okay, so. Heisenberg Resident Evil.
Tumblr media
Free Space: NICK LIGHTBEARER MY BELOVED! He shares a VA with a character from We Happy Few! I feel like I should’ve guessed that, honestly; when I saw him in the trailer, for some reason I expected him to have a really thick western or southern accent, maybe because of the hat. But that voice actor does have a real talent for emotive, theatrical dialogue, which made the Lightbearer DLC one of the most memorable in the retinue and gave Heisenberg a believability that wasn’t guaranteed by his writing itself.
Heisenberg looms in the background of theoverarching narrative of RE8 very perceptibly, pulling strings behind the scenes throughout all three preceding regions. That in mind, I felt there was some wasted potential in terms of his contribution to the endgame narrative. For all the buildup around him and his role in the family, I think the story would've benefited from Heisenberg having a more significant role in the final arc of the game. There was something interesting going on with his whole revolutionary schtick, but after his boss fight he disappears from the narrative entirely. (Unless I’m mistaken, it’s been a while since I played.) Maybe the DLC will improve on that.
Maybe the DLC will also expand on the weirdness around his gameplan re: overthrowing Miranda in general. What the fuck does “use Rose’s power” mean, Karl? Are you gonna hook her up to your Chevy and run Miranda down with it? Stick her under an electric chair?
On that note: I love how hammy his dialogue is. "Let's settle this, mano e mano.” Fucking dork.
Also his model Joel Hicks is really hot. Like hideously. Profanely. Absurdly.
Minute character details are like catnip to me, and Heisenberg has them out the wazoo. The laziness reflected across the board, from the way he stands in the background smoking as his men dig up bodies in the concept art to the way he uses his magnetic abilities for everything, even things he could do easily. He stands like he’s half falling over from the effort. Love it.
His factory is one of the most well-designed sets in the entire game. It’s utterly disorienting, a maze of parts and creatures that blend into each other & overlap, but it also gives the appearance of being designed with a plan in mind; like it’s actually being used. The assembly line corpses, the vaulted ceilings, the x-rays on the walls, the red lights everywhere, the bodies of water interspersed with everything. “Dilapidated factory that’s been repurposed to produce mechanical zombies” is a very particular aesthetic, and RE8 made it work very well. I wanna run around touching everything.

1, 25, 29 for the asks?
(in response to this post; THANK YOU for asking and sorry for taking so long to respond!)
wow, these questions do not pull their punches huh! okay i guess my answers would be:
1: what are 3 things you’d say shaped you into who you are?
i'm so glad this question doesn't say THE three things or THE MOST IMPORTANT three things or i would be sitting here from now until doomsday. however if i just get to pick three things on a whim then:
unfortunate as it may be, i'd feel dishonest if i didn't say reading harry potter at age 6. it was unquestionably the thing that made me go "i want to do that, i want to tell stories like that". like i can pinpoint the point at which baby cicely said "i want to be a writer" and it was, like, the day after reading philosopher's stone for the first time.
visiting the llŷn peninsula at age... i wanna say 10? this did not necessarily set me on the path towards being a Welsh Nerd but it DID start me on the path towards being a Hill Enthusiast. i can literally remember the drive in as it got darker and darker, seeing those huge hills looming out of the distance and feeling like i was possessed by something bigger than myself. we'd been before but something about this particular drive (and also coldplay blasting on the car speakers as we went) feels formative to me
you know what? running across katherine by anya seaton in a holiday cottage in northern ireland in 2009. the book itself did not leave a deep imprint on my psyche but it did make me aware of the existence of julian of norwich and THAT is still shaping my psyche even now
25: fave season and why?
i'm always torn between spring and autumn, but spring, i think. i love autumn rain and spring rain equally (rain is an important factor to me in a season, i am a rain stan) but spring rain comes with that feeling of softness and clear air, and also in spring i get to track the passage of time by which flowers come out when, and that's important to me.
29: what do you do when you’re sad?
depends if i can muster the executive function to self-soothe effectively. if no, then the answer is basically "lie in bed, scroll on phone". if yes, then i might watch a favourite video, reread a beloved childhood book, take myself out to a cafe for a mildly fancy overpriced lunch item which i did not have to cook, or - a fun new technique which i've been working on for the past couple of years - tell a friend or family member and be comforted and hear another human voice. i know! radical!
and at all times repeat unto myself the mantra, "in two weeks we'll have different problems". that one hasn't failed me yet.

Favorite I, Claudius lines? (I regularly quote "Kiss me and go", "Don't eat the figs" "WHERE ARE MY EAGLES" and "I'd bring my own wine if I were you")
Yeah 'Don't touch the figs' is a classic. I also have to go with 'These games are being degraded by the increasing use of professional tricks to stay alive! And I won't have it!", Livia's 'prophetic chickens' (I love how that whole speech really says so much about her honestly and her willingness to play the long game), Caligula talking about his 'natural humility' and saying 'people really are despicable', 'Quality of wits is more important than quantity', 'They say a snake bit her and died' and 'IS THERE ANYONE IN ROME WHO HAS NOT SLEPT WITH MY DAUGHTER!!!'

Crimson Peak OT3!
A+: OTP
I just
they each have two hands
and they can take turns kissing
and I still maintain that this was Thomas' intended endgame- "we can all be together," anyone?
and the only uncertainty here re: attraction, even in canon (if you go by actor interviews, too), is Edith -> Lucille. even that can be argued for, if you tilt your head and squint about Alan's "fascination with the Sharpes" line and how it includes both of them
not that canon matters in shipping, of course. I just want Edith to get a bit worse and the Sharpes to get a bit better and for them all to be one big fucked-up yet happy Chaos Triad

6, 7, 10, 17?
6) What is your darkest fear about writing?
Oof, I should no longer be surprised by your ability to come out the gate swinging, but hot damn.
There's kind of two rolled into one for me with this, which is that I'll never be able to live up to those I admire and, in turn, people won't want to interact and or enjoy what I create.
7) What is your deepest joy about writing?
Hopefully this isn't a cop out to say, but I really like the rush that comes with creating and the community that gets to be formed around it.
10) Has a piece of writing ever “haunted” you? Has your own writing haunted you? What does that mean to you?
Getting haunted by a piece of writing, to me, typically means that there's something about it that sticks with you. Which, uh, yeah... (the fic in question btw)
Tumblr media
On the flip side, though, being an absolute over analyzer means I wind up getting "haunted" less by the good parts of what I work on and more over perceived mistakes.
Which, I won't lie, comes up a lot with Bakery AU. Like, don't get me wrong, I feel continually blessed that I managed to complete it at all or that people seem to like it so much. But I wrote it all in such a dead rush that it reeks of a first draft to me and I often can't re-read it without thinking of how I'd do things differently.
17) Talk to me about the minutiae of your current WIP. Tell me about the lore, the history, the detail, the things that won’t make it in the text.
Ugh, this is the true pain of not having an entirely active WIP at the moment. Although, I'll admit, the biggest struggle I'm in at the moment is whether to go full canon world state with my first COD fic (which is requiring a lot of questions about military bases I never thought I'd wanna know) or to just cave and let myself go full AU.
Although, as I've been trying to slog my way through the next chapter of Heart Trick I'll also say that (like with Bakery AU) @stillarobyn has been an excellent sounding board. There are spoilers given to both them and mutual friend that have left both in a spiral of how the heck I managed to make that work so I'm counting it as a win!

I just got to reading a translation of "The wooing of Emer" online. Why is no-one (especially the online encyclopedias) talking about the fact Emer is fomorian?
why aren't the online encyclopaedias talking about it: bc they are not that useful for medieval irish literature most of the time, tbh, being heavily simplified and reliant on secondary sources that are often themselves not particularly reliable (although there have been efforts to improve some pages inc. wikipedia pages). loads of fun details missing from them, always
why isn't anyone else talking about it: eh. probably two main reasons
there's a lot of it around. cú chulainn's got a fomorian grandma (on lug's side) and no one ever really talks about that either. it's not that big a deal. i'm sure he's not the only one; can't throw a rock around here without hitting someone with a fomorian uncle or something. there's a lot more overlap / interaction between them and the tuatha dé danann than a simple oppositional binary would suggest, and family trees get fucky in general. being related to the fomoire doesn't automatically = being fomorian yourself bc belonging and kin-groups and stuff are a bit more complicated than that
i'm pretty sure it's only mentioned in tochmarc emire and only in passing and not directly in relation to emer herself, so it's easily overlooked even if you're dealing with that text and a lot of people will be dealing with other texts. it's also only in the later, longer redaction of the text and not in the earliest one, although so are a lot of things. if the authors thought it was important as part of her heritage -- whether they saw it as a good or a bad thing -- they would bring it up more often, but TE seems to be the only one that bothers to give background information about forgall's family tree, so mostly it looks like they think it's not that relevant. (although as it is not a particular focus of mine, it's entirely possible it comes up somewhere else and i just haven't noticed)
e.g. you might expect it to come up in fled bricrenn but it doesn't
Tumblr media
sidenote: why the fuck henderson translations "ben ind fir as dech" as "wife of the best wight" i have no idea. it's just "fer"! it's just man! why are you trying to make cú chulainn sound even weirder than usual! it's a mystery to me. other than the fact it's from 1899 and people did whatever they wanted at that point tbh
(the parenthetical explaining the meaning of "Manach" is also editorial and not in the Irish; the meaning "tricky" may be more suitable bc it might have something to do with clessa, but that's getting into my friend emmet's in-progress research so i won't delve deeper there)
also, tethra, who is supposedly forgall's uncle in TE and who is described in the text as a "king of the fomoire" is a bit of a weird one iirc and there's potentially more going on with him than that phrasing suggests, although i can't remember the details and that's getting into cath maige tuired territory, at which point you're better off asking @margridarnauds bc it's not a topic i know a huge amount about
finally i'll be honest another factor is probably that there hasn't been a huge amount written about emer as a character. there's been a lot written about texts that she's in and her function there, but less on her just like, as a person (bc medieval celtic studies is a very small field, there are a lot of texts and characters, and there hasn't been that much written about anyone really). so lots of things don't get talked about. doesn't mean they're not worth talking about. just means nobody's got around to it yet.
