I just want to sleep, so why won't you let me? (Set after King's Tide, TOH season 2 finale)
“Luz, I’m so happy I had you as a big sister…”
“We’ll see each other after the Day of Unity…”
“Us weirdos stick together…”
“Luz, I’m so happy I had you as a big sister…”
“We’ll see each other after the Day of Unity…”
 “Us weirdos stick togethertogethertogethertogether–”
Luz shot up from the mattress, one hand clenched over her rapidly beating heart.
“King!? Eda!?”
It was dark. Why was it dark? Where was she? And sleeping? Why was she sleeping when she should be rescuing her FAMILY AND –
She stumbled out of the bed and towards the partly open door. The place didn’t look too familiar, was this another CATS hideout or something?
Why were they here instead of out there stopping Belos? Why did her head hurt and her stomach twist into infinite knots like she’d eaten one too many boo-berries? And her biggest question?
Why didn’t she remember ANYTHING?
She slammed a hand against the wall as she dug her free hand into her pocket, but –
“No pockets?”
She glanced down for the first time. To her surprise, she was dressed in her cozy pajamas, ones she hadn’t seen in ages because she had never packed them in her bag for summer camp and left them in her…
Room.
In the human realm.
Luz looked up and out the window, noting the dim glow of the street lights and the rectangular, geometric-ness of the human realm that stood out in sharp (and very obvious) contrast to the warped shapes of home.
Home.
The home she’d left behind when King’s shout shocked her into releasing her grip on the vines and sent her and Amity tumbling into the portal just before it collapsed, leaving them stranded here.
In what was supposed to be her home.
Luz braced against the wall as a spell of dizziness overcame her. The trip from the dilapidated shack to her…mom’s house was too blurry to remember, shock and a tingling numbness permeating every fiber of her being as she led her friends to the one place they’d all be safe.
She did vaguely remember knocking on the door, and the look of utter surprise and confused relief that crossed her mom’s face as she saw them all scratched up and shaken.
But she definitely remembered sitting down on the couch and feeling right like she could go to sleep, because fatigue was weighing down on her every limb like she hadn’t rested in centuries, which was ironic because the last time she’d slept was…
When was the last time she’d slept?
She remembered nearly falling asleep on Amity’s shoulder before her mother suggested they all turn in for the night and explain their story in the morning.
She remembered leading her friends to the rooms upstairs and pulling out spare sleeping bags and pillows like she knew exactly where they were – which she did, because it was her house and no amount of time and distance could change that, but it wasn’t the house she’d grown to think of as a home anymore and the fact that she could even bear to think of something like that when she was finally here with her mom was just TOO much for her to handle at the moment so she shut down and began mechanically arranging their beds until she nearly stumbled over a pillow and Vee directed her to her old bed with a simple order:
Sleep.
And that was all she could recall.
She sank to the floor, wincing as the movement jostled some injuries she hadn’t yet revealed to her mother. Then again, she hadn’t revealed a lot of things to her mother. She didn’t know where to start.
Like was she supposed to start with what had happened to all of them right before the portal collapsed, or how they’d spent weeks preparing for the genocide of the entire demon realm and maybe they’d stopped it, but the situation was far FAR worse now because that Collector kid was going around turning everything into a game and she had just LEFT King and Eda and the others there alone to deal with it all and what kind of person – what kind of human was she to just leave them in their misery and escape to her own world –
CRASH!
“Shshd! Sorry, anyone who’s still awake…I did not mean for that to happen.” A hint of golden eyes peered her direction, but the light was clearly not enough to grant them a clear picture.
Luz wiped at her tears. “I-it’s okay…”
The eyes shone with recognition, “Oh, Luz…” She stepped over the sleeping bundles and nestled down by Luz’ side. “I didn’t realize you were awake.”
“I didn’t want to be.”
“Oh.” Amity sighed, glancing quickly at their friends before lowering her voice, “Are you thinking about…what happened back there?”
“…aren’t you?” She wanted to be sharper with her question, because how could Amity not be thinking about everyone they’d left behind, but her voice quavered dangerously and she could feel a little lump growing in her throat that shut her up real quick.
But Amity had always known her too well. “Luz…”
“You’re going to say it’s not my fault and that I couldn’t have stopped the Collector or saved King on my own. I know you are.” She wiped at her eyes. “But I just LEFT them, Amity….I just left them there and now we have no way of going back andandAND!”
Amity gathered her into a hug, wrapping her whole body around Luz’s trembling frame as she wept softly to herself. “Luz…”
The girl whimpered in her embrace.
“Luz, I’m not going to sit here and try and pretend there’s an upside to all of this. Because everything happened so fast and we literally haven’t had a single moment to process it all and we’re tired and sore and hurting and nothing I say can really make you feel better anyway…but there is one thing I want you to know.”
She ran gentle fingers through thick brown hair, relishing the little content hum that came from her sniffling girlfriend. “I…I want you to know how unbelievably GLAD I am to see you alive and to be able to hold you in my arms right now…because after that little stunt you pulled at the factory,” Amity released a wet chuckle, “I thought I’d never get to see you again, or hold you again…I…I thought we’d never get that date...”
Luz’s head shot up so fast, affront written all over her face like she’d just insulted her mother. “But, but I promised you that date!”
“I know,” Amity giggled, “I know you did, and I know you always keep your promise, Luz…and maybe that’s why I shouldn’t have worried at all. But…I was so scared for you that all I could think of on the ride to the Titan’s Head was what I would do if I got there too late…and-”
“Hey,” A warm, brown hand cradled her cheek, nudging her glance back to Luz’s soft gaze, “It’s okay, Sweet Potato. I’m here now.”
“I know.” Amity leaned in, pecking a light kiss to Luz’ lips and enjoying the beet-red blush that spread across her girlfriend’s face. “There are a lot of things I’m not sure about and I know our future is really uncertain right now…but I’m just glad I get to do that again.”
“Oh, you-you can do that whenever you want,” A flustered Luz blurted out.
“Whenever?” One eyebrow went up. “So, if I were to give you another one right now, you wouldn’t mind?”
It hadn’t seemed possible, but Luz was quickly rivalling her in the tomato-face department. “N-NO! I-I mean, sure, you-you could…but-but I- I mean you-in this- and now and I just…” She groaned and buried her head in her hands with a soft cry, “Help?”
Amity couldn’t help but giggle at Luz’ adorableness as she removed the hands, “If I knew you were going to get this flustered, I’d have kissed you sooner.”
Luz was mere seconds from passing out, “S-sooner? Like how much sooner?”
Amity felt a hint of warmth creep across her own face. Thinking about when or how she might have summoned the courage to kiss Luz without the end of the world looming in the distance was far more than she cared to think about this late at night, not on top of everything else.
“Maybe I’ll tell you later. After you get some sleep.”
“Noooo…” Luz whined, an adorable pout on her lips, “Please, Ames…ya can’t just leave a girl hanging like that!”
Amity feigned indifference, “I’m immune to your wily ways, Noceda. Your charms can’t bamboozle me.” Her expression softened as Luz stifled a yawn, “See, you can barely keep your eyes open. Bed first, talk later.”
Luz huffed but allowed Amity to help her to her feet. “Will…?” She blushed and rubbed her forearm, but the hesitation and the awkward silence was enough for her girlfriend to get the hint.
Amity blushed a deep red, “You…you want me to sleep with you?”
It was a miracle neither girl had passed out from lack of oxygen. But Luz sure felt on the brink of it. “J-just for tonight…I-it’d help.”
“Oh…” Amity sucked in a deep breath, “O-okay.”
They crossed over their dozing friends and to the bottom bunk, brushing aside the scattered covers so that Luz first, then Amity could crawl under.
“Um…are you sure your mother is okay with this?”
Luz bit her tongue. She hadn’t yet told her mother about…well, anything. But it was far too late to worry about that now. “I’ll tell her in the morning. Besides, we’ve had a long day, she’ll understand.”
“Okay…” Amity laid down, her arms stiff against her side like wooden boards.
“Hey,” Luz curled her arms around her girlfriend, brushing her fingers against her sides, “Relax hermosa, be comfortable.”
“B…but…”
“Shhhh.” Luz nuzzled her head against Amity’s shoulder, “Bed first, talk later. Remember?”
Amity managed a nod. She could do this. She could overcome her gay panic and cuddle with her girlfriend in her bed, in her room. Right?
Soft lips landed on her cheek before Luz settled down into slumber, “Good night, sweet potato. I love you.”
The surge of warmth that swelled in her heart vanquished any lingering anxiety. Amity pressed a soft kiss to the brown hair before her before wrapping her arms around Luz. “Good night, batata. I love you too.”
In mere minutes, the couple were fast asleep.
Hunter released his breath, lightly patting Willow beside him, “What-what was that thing she said? Batata? And why did they say I love you to each other? Are people supposed to say that to each other normally? Or is that something they do because they’re ‘together’ or whatever?”
Willow sighed. As delightful as Caleb’s curiosity could be, it was way too late at night to handle all his enthusiasm. She patted his arm, “You’ll understand when you’re older.”
“…but I am –!”

Whumptober Day 5:
"You better pray I don't get up this time round."
Debri | pinned down | "It's broken."
Fandom: Owl House (canon divergence)
Prompt used: Debri, Pinned, "Its broken."
So honestly, no idea where this one stands timeline wise, cause I moved so much around. So its just like… its own timeline, so please bare with me and go with the flow. It shouldn't be too confusing hopefully, but basically; after the portal was destroyed but before the day of Unity, however literally everything that happened before and in between is up in the air order wise lol. So enjoy some Luz angst
Also, I guess as a PS: sorry for the spacing lol, after last year im writing everything in google then posting and fixing the spacing for the whole thing... meh. If people complain I'll try lol.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The Isles, by normal human standards, were a terrifyingly dangerous place. Luz, despite her human title, was far from normal- no matter how much the world wanted her to be- and found the Isles both weird and positively fantastic! Even with all the mortal danger and stuff.
She'd done a lot here, been through a lot, stuff no one at her old school would believe. Still, no matter how much she's seen and experienced, some things still surprised her. But this time… this time she was alone. And boy was she in trouble.
The fight had been her fault. Despite what they'd all been through, there were still some things they just… didn't talk about. And when things are bottled up, they're bound to explode eventually. But it's no excuse, she shouldn't have said what she said, shouldn't have yelled, and shouldn't have run off. She loves her friends, her family in this place far from her mom, and yet she always manages to ruin everything. And now, she supposed she was getting what she deserved.
They'd been on a little trip of sorts- Willow, Gus, Amity, Hunter and herself- Luz thinks it may have had something to do with the emperor but she'd been… distracted lately. When Luz had turned to run after their fight, she's pretty sure the others flew off- they had their staff's, Luz had caught a ride with Amity because Eda needed Owlbert, so Luz was stranded, she's so stupid… she deserved it- and it was a good thing too apparently. That meant they were out of danger, and that Luz would die the most anticlimactic death ever after all she'd been through.
Well, she supposed what led up to it wasn't like… completely boring. But she's also mad at herself for letting this all happen after she started a stupid fight because she's terrible-
She'd run off, into forest-y darkness, eyes wet but cheeks dry- she refused to cry, she couldn't, she wouldn't stop if she started and she feared she didn't have enough, that she didn't deserve to cry- and hadn't stopped until she was forced to. The trees were dense here, but that wasn't what stopped her, no it was the demon's trap. A simple little snare shed stepped in, that dragged her up to a crude little house in the trees.
The demon itself wasn't unlike Grometheus. A grotesque formless thing that seemed to peer into Luz's very soul, but unlike the Grom monster, this thing did not change into her deepest fears but rather ranted in a cliche crotchety voice about Luz and her fellow trespassers being its next meal. Then proceeded to- in great detail- describe the process of how it'd eat them. Luz got lost about 2 seconds in when the words failed to either translate or compute with her brain, but it sounded like a truly awful way to go out. (but at least it wouldn't have been a boring headstone.)
Luz would blame the blood rushing to her head for her delayed reaction of fighting back- because it was far better than the reality- but as soon as she registered that the demon was going to hunt her friends down, she pulled some glyphs out and fought back. And truly, this thing was far easier to fight than Grometheus, despite its quick reflexes, but Luz had not taken into account the house's whereabouts. One wrong ice pillar, one hit to the support holding this house up, one second to panic, before the whole place crumbled and Luz's world went dark.
Waking up had been met with pain, and a bit of surprise at waking at all. She'd thought for sure the fall would kill her one way or the other, but no, she woke to find the sky a darker color, the remnants of the house broken around her, and her inability to move. Between the debri of the house itself, and the branches of the trees that had come with it, Luz was truly and utterly pinned, trapped, and buried. And after that fight… and the fact that even she didn't know where she was, there was no way she'd be found any time soon. She would die here, from her injuries no doubt- she was in too much pain, she felt like a dog that's been hit by a semi- and sure she deserved it, but… she wished she had left on a better note. To tell her friends she hadnt meant any of it, that she was sorry, that it's all her fault.
Something creaks, crashes, a dirt cloud fills the air and she cant help her cough, despite the agony that rips through her,
"It's broken." She had really hoped to never hear that voice again, "My home, you broke my home!" The screech is ear splitting, and Luz can barely see- is it blood, dust, or hair in her eye she cant tell- but she can feel the debri tremble as the Demon lumbers about, throwing things, rifling through the chaos-
Looking for Luz.
Well… she supposed she might get a notable ending after all. 'Here lies Luz the Human, killed by her own stupidity, and an angry demon.' Hm, her mama will hurtle a chancla at Luz's spirit when she hears.
Another screech fills the air and the weight on top of Luz gets impossibly heavier, despite herself she cant help the wet scream that rips from her throat as something moves that shouldn't. She wonders idly if a rib can bend enough to rip through her back, though she supposes she shouldn't be alive long to feel it if that's the case.
A silence rings after her scream, and she bites her lip hard enough to bleed in the hopes the Demon had not heard, or at least couldn't find the direction of it. Instead a cackle fills the air, the stuff around her trembles, and Luz knows she's been found.
"There you are child, come, it's time for dinner!" The emphasis on dinner is not needed, but Luz can appreciate a bit, even a fatal one.
As more and more debri is moved, she comes face to face-ish once again with the demon. Ironically, even if she wasn't quite literally pinned, she thinks that stare would do the same, there's a finality to it.
She hopes everyone will be okay. She hopes King won't be too sad, that Eda won't blame herself, that Odalia will eat dirt before the others arrive back to town, she… hopes for so many things she has no time to hope about, because appendages are forming from the blob and she knows the process is about to begin- even if she doesn't even know what the dang process is!
"Step away from our friend!"
Awe, they still call me fr-
Wait,
"Guys! What-" her shocked response to their arrival is cut off by another shriek, this close it has her ears ringing painfully and with no hands to cover them, she simply hopes her eardrums are okay.
Willow and Amity take the lead, Gus taking up the rear, the demon stumbling backwards as they distract it from Hunter's arrival by Luz's side.
"Titan… hold on, I'll figure out how to get this off you-"
"You guys came." She mutters it, against her better wishes, but with teary eyes she stares up at Hunter as he looks at her in shock.
"Of course we did. Just cause we fought doesn't mean we would leave you here." He seems hurt by her words so she forces her voice to work.
"I deserved this, I was so mean, I didn't mean any of it, i'm sorry, I-"
"You did not deserve this!" He takes a breath to calm himself, focusing again on trying to lift stuff, "We all said stupid things, and it's obvious there are underlying problems, we will talk it out later. But right now you need help, and I have no idea what's NOT broken."
"I love you guys."
"Yeah yeah" the blush on his face says what he can't and Luz lets a sense of safety wash over her.
It'd be fine, even if it was broken, they'd fix what was broke.

Grasping at straws
saw my girl Luz’s new hair and simply made it angsty, becuase honestly, knowing her, it is angsty.
Ao3
Words:   690
Summary: Throughout everything, Luz had made one decision she’d been able to stick to. one decision that wasn’t life or death. that was fun, that she’d made when smiling.
One decision.
The only one she’d been able to stick to, the tiniest little decision.
She’d wanted to grow out her hair like Eda.
Contents and Warnings: character study, Luz angst, season three poster and teaser spoilers, the grief of not knowing whether your loved ones are dead or alive.
______
Throughout everything, Luz had made one decision she’d been able to stick to. one decision that wasn’t life or death. that was fun, that she’d made when smiling.
  One decision.
The only one she’d been able to stick to, the tiniest little decision.
She’d wanted to grow out her hair like Eda.
She wanted her hair to be like Eda's. to be able to store stuff in it like Eda’s.
She wanted to be like Eda.
She’d made the decision so long ago. before it was even a proper decision. before she even thought about it too much.
Before the portal had been destroyed for the first time.
She’d said it awed, and King had scoffed and commented something or other she couldn’t remember now, no matter how hard she tried.
But it was the only thing she’d been able to do, to have control of, as the portal was broken and as the boiling isles crumbled around her.
Eda hadn’t wanted her to help with the plan against belos, hadn’t allowed it. and then Luz found out there wasn’t one.
And that had been okay, well it wasn't, not really. but it was fine, at least in the long run. because then they’d met the catt’s. but Eda had never really budged on her stance, she’d wanted to protect Luz no matter what.
 Luz couldn't change her mind.
And Luz hadn’t fought with Eda. but she had fought.
Even if Eda didn't know. so Luz still hadn't been allowed. And Eda probably didn't know where she had gone, she probably expected her and her friends to be at the catt’s base after everything.
But nothing had gone according to plan.
so she hadn’t been able to introduce Eda and her mamá. hadn't been able to try and get them to talk so that Luz could try and convince her Mami to let her still live in the boiling isles, even if not full-time.
She hadn't been able to watch her mamá coo over King, and laugh with Eda about their mutual interest that was Luz.
Hadn't been able to merge her two families.
she hadn’t been able to do anything she had thought she could've. For they were suddenly forced through the portal into the human world, her baby brother and Eda locked on the other side as the world came undone.
Nothing had worked out how she had tried so hard to make it.
Luz had never really had control.
But her hair she could control, it was small but it was just a symbol for more. she’d made one decision and she wouldn't let it, too, be changed.
She could decide it for herself.
And she wanted to be like Eda.
She wanted to be like Eda so desperately.
And so, when her mamá commented on her hair getting longer and asked if she wanted her to cut it again.
 Luz had said no.
Because she needed it to grow big and long like Eda's.
And Eda would see it when they saw each other again, and she would laugh and pat Luz on the back, and comment something only she found funny, and King would scoff and it would be perfect.
And Luz would probably cry a little.
 But it would be okay.
But that all meant one thing.
 Eda had to be alive.
  She had to.
She had to be alive to see it. she had to be alive, safe, and okay. so she could see it. and King had to be perfectly fine, and happy and healthy, so he could scoff at their nonsense.
 They had to be okay.
 They had to be okay.
  They had to.
  Eda had to see it.
  She had to.
  …
The world had come undone, Luz didn't know if Eda or King or anyone else was truly alive. didn't know if they stopped it in time. didn't know if they were safe with the collector out.
She was grasping at straws for comfort and hope.
 Because she didn't know.
But Luz had one thing, and if it made her feel a little bit better, then it did its job.

Man.
Imagine being Eda here.
Tumblr media
You did everything in your power to keep your daughter (who just cracked open your walls) safe and away from the fight. Argued with her about her safety and even helped carve her palisman.
Only for it to be in vain, because she ended up being killed by Belos anyway. And you got a front row seat.
Tumblr media
You don’t even know what to do as you watch the light orbs that used to be your kid float away.
Tumblr media
At this point, Eda doesn’t give two shits and let’s the owl beast take the reigns.
Tumblr media
You can practically hear her grief and agony in “I don’t think I can control myself right now.”

A sneak peak of my TOH fic, "Sometimes I realize I'm not alone (and it scares me)"
The hideout was silent.
The newly gathered CATTS had retired late in the night, everyone slowly dispersing to their chosen bunks – or in Darius and Eberwolf’s case, to the castle to maintain appearances and explain away Raine’s absence to a very nosy Terra.
This left the former BATTs, who moved into a corner to chat quietly amongst themselves before drifting off to sleep, Steve, who went outside to ‘reflect upon the fleeting presence of time’, Raine, who had gone to cast some anti-detection spells around their hideout, and the Owl House occupants.
She didn’t know where Eda had gone off too, but Lilith and Hooty had fallen asleep almost immediately after settling down – something about being dead on their feet after chasing King across the Isles to make sure he wasn’t being captured or whatever.
And the little Titan in question?
He was curled up at her side, his head placed delicately on her shoulder and a newly reacquired Francois tucked safely under his arm, as he mew-mew-mewed himself to what she hoped was a dreamless sleep.
Unfortunately, Luz had no such hopes for herself, because try as she might, she could not relax.
She punched her pillow a few times and turned onto her back. The new sleeping arrangements were much better than the flimsy sleeping bag she’d slept on back home – she spared a brief thought for how effortlessly she had referred to the Owl House as home – but that didn’t really seem to make much of a difference to her weary body.
You’d think I’d be able to go to sleep after escaping a bunch of warrior-cult crazies and traveling across the Isles and up to the Knee and going on an admittedly ill-conceived heist and fighting with my mentor and getting captured and thinking I was going to lose her forever and ever just like I’ve lost everyone I’ve EVER –
And there it was.
The one thing keeping her up at night.
Because even after learning about the secret rebellion hideout and the cool nickname they’d set for themselves, all Luz could think about, the only thing her brain could hyper-fixate on was how she’d overheard Eda getting ready to send her away again, separating them forever and ever and ever and ever andeverandever…
She wiped at the traitorous tears threatening to spill over –
Stop being such a baby! This is why Eda didn’t want to tell you anything, you weakling!
But all she could see, the only thing she could remember was Eda being beat down by those grotesque abomatons and the helplessness on her mentor’s face as she admitted they had no plan to stop Belos, that all they had were the kids and that all they cared about was keeping them safe…no matter what happened to her.
And something almost had.
She had almost been lost.
Luz had almost lost her.
