Period dramas dresses tournament: Orange dresses Round 1- Group D: Lucretia, Spartacus (gifset) vs Lucilla, Gladiator (gifset)
Propaganda for Lucilla's dress (written by a submitter):
This dress is actually modeled off of a Roman wedding dress, though it is not used as such in the film. The orange bridal veil is called a “flammeum,” and the color is supposed to suggest fire, and the goddess of marital fidelity. There’s many ways to interpret that, some brides opted for a more straightforward yellow. I loved how the metallic sheen of the fabrics here gave that all important veil extra dimension.

Why do you like Skybound? From the little I’ve seen on tumblr, it looks like it’s made Starscream into a heartless, ruthless villain with no emotions and that doesn’t sound like something a Starscream fan would enjoy.
The thing about it is that, I like it because it is Starscream. Starscream is ruthless, he is heartless and he is a villain. Especially to humans. The only thing I don’t really like about Skybound is that, for two seconds, I was terrified he was killed off early but people are saying he might be alive?
I think the interesting thing about Starscream, depending on the iteration or what version of the character you absorb, is that he can be multifaceted. I think that the two Starscream’s we have now are Earthspark and Skybound Starscream. It’s fair to say that Earthspark Starscream is handled with a lot of nuance and respect for what happened to him, which is what I absolutely love and adore. But Starscream is still, at his core, before any form or redemption can ever take place, and awful person. Even Earthspark Starscream was not a good person until the episode dropped.
Skybound Starscream to me at least, isn’t that shocking because that shows us one of the many facets of Starscream he can be. I think that, given the various iterations we’ve had of him, and the franchises lack of actually committing to a type of Starscream, it is easy to mix those versions + fandom interpretation (which imo , does tend to water him down and overly pacify him for many reasons), and in a way, think they should be canon.
But in reality, despite the iterations, Starscream is not supposed to be viewed as a good person. At least, not to begin with. Starscream has always been an extremely violent, ruthless, manipulative and abusive person. Even in Earthspark, or TFP, or Cyberverse, etc. He has always resorted to violence to get what he wants. He mistreats those around him, and those who try to help him whether it be his Trine, Knockout, etc. That’s why I don’t think that Skybound is inaccurate because that’s just who he is. I think as Starscream fans, it’s logical to want a version of Starscream that is nuance and more complex because we have gotten that in the past, even among the violence. And I mean, other characters are allowed to have that.
But I’m also okay accepting that Skybound isn’t that version, and that Skybound is also very canon, and often times forgotten version of Starscream that I think the fanbase sometimes needs to be reminded of. I’ve spoken about this before, but while I am heavily empathetic toward Starscream, especially in like TFP and Earthspark (and IDW), he is still an awful person, and he actually has to change to get sympathy points. And what Skybound is doing is in a way, reminding us of that or leaning into that side of Starscream that is either overlooked by the fandom, or a side we haven’t seen in years.
I am literally all for crazed, violent characters like Starscream, and I do like it. Because I also think that, with all the discourse surrounding his character, it is important to recognize that he isn’t this helpless person who has done no wrong. He is still, at his core until he changes, a violent person. And it is satisfying seeing him be violent but also seeing him be held accountable for it.
Skybound Starscream, like all depictions of him, is realistic. I just don’t think we get the nuance or the sympathetic nature of him, which again is okay. That’s not to say that in the future, we don’t see it. Because I believe we will.
I am very curious to see how his relationship with Megatron is going to be, and in my mind I hope they have a good/better relationship but I hope they're good to each other, or at least can work together. I really don't want any of them to be redeemed I just want them to be terrible actually and just feed off of that.

batiatus really down plays just how goddamn clever he really is and i love it. like he and lucretia have that whole argument about what's going to happen when sura gets there. and batiatus is like don't worry about it, i got it covered. and then just as she does get there, she dies in sparty's arms and batiatus turns to lucretia with this look and says "my word is kept, they are reunited." all but saying that this had more or less been the plan from the start LIKE SIR THAT IS SO COLD and despicable but also absolutely brilliant

Jupiter’s c**k a sequel to Spartacus?!
I remember when the original show ended there was talk of a spinoff/sequel about Caesar and the triumvirate that never happened. I wonder what this story will be about, either way it’ll be brilliant.

It would be wrong to think that Lucretia doesn’t really love Quintus just because she was sleeping with Crixus. He is a rare man who sees his wife as his partner and equal and for that (as well as his ambition) she loves him. The main purpose of Crixus was for her to get pregnant since she wasn’t getting anywhere in that regard with her husband. Yes, she became possessive of him when she found out about him and Naevia, but that doesn’t mean there were genuine feelings there. At the end of the day, he is still a slave and could never be her equal or even remotely acknowledged as her child’s natural father.

Do you have some favorite moments of Lucretia and Batiatus? (could be separately as characters or as a couple!)
oooh i do, most of them are probably not giffed. with, like, batiatus a lot of it also just his lines?
Tumblr media
there's that line right after this where he's, like, so frustrated with ilithyia because she tried to have spartacus killed that he mutters
Tumblr media
or when lucretia freaks out about ilithyia wanting to fuck crixus and she throws things around and screams and batiatus walks in and is like
Tumblr media Tumblr media
like, he's hilarious
Tumblr media Tumblr media
lucretia setting up ilithyia -- that was fucking cruel, i loved it
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this was so fucked up. he did not have to kill his son too. but, like, this is how you villain.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
killing batiatus' dad
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is lucretia and batiatus together but when they blackmail glaber because batiatus didn't tell lucretia of his plan but she gets on board quickly and helps him
Tumblr media Tumblr media
honestly, any time the two of them scheme together
Tumblr media
or when they're loving, there's a particular scene where quintus stays up late and watches i believe it's spartacus and crixus train, i think it's when they're going to face theokeles and she gets him from the balcony and is like "come to bed and bring that horrible wine" i don't know why but there's something very endearing about it.
their death scene because they deserved it but also batiatus does try to fight spartacus to get to her, he doesn't last longer than a second but he tries and i was like aw you horrible man, you really do love this horrible woman
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i like when quintus reveals to lucretia that he always knew about her and crixus and was like, it made you happy and it gave me no bother so i didn't say anything idk.
i like when lucretia can hold her own with the roman women and doesn't let them intimidate her.
i'm sure there are other scenes i just can't think of right now.

Can we whore over the series ‘Spartacus blood and sands’ and ‘Spartacus god of the arena’
I want to write a story where Spartacus has a brother that also became a gladiator under Batiatus and fell in love with naevia’s younger sister who is also one of Lucretia’s handmaidens and is being used to keep Spartacus’s brother in line.
I want to write a scene where the two is being props at one of Batiatus and Lucretia’s parties where they have those orgies and one of the party go-ers requesting to see if a gladiator can be less animalistic and more gentle with women and Spartacus’s brother and Naevia’s sister gets pick and he gently prys her thighs apart before putting his face between her and eat her out while his hands explores her body .
A group of people were watching in lust and awe as this brooding ‘blood thirsty’ gladiator gently handled one of Lucretia’s handmaidens. Holding down her hips as he basically makes out with her pussy. After she cums on his tongue he place a kiss on her inner thigh and the soft skin above her pubic bone before standing and wiping his mouth. Then he fucks her and shows off his stroke game 🥵
He goes crazy for her especially when he looses her during the rebellion and can’t find her in time before his brother drags him away with the promise of getting her back. And instead of Ashur wanting Naevia or Lucretia he wants Naevia’s sister who winds up with Lucretia at Ilithiya and Glaber’s home.
I screameddd when I saw this ask bc that show…listen that show is one of my all time faves!!! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve rewatched!
You should absolutely write this bc it’s such a good premise!! Spartacus having a brother and him falling in love with a handmaiden and that specific scenario of them coming together, they aren’t alone the first time they fuck bc it’s in front of everyone but he makes sure she’s taken care of, he tries to make it so that all she can feel and think of is him, he calms her nervousness down almost immediately when he goes to lay her down, whispering reassuring words to her!
Ugh the tension would be perfect and the point of conflict being that they’re separated and Ashur is the one who takes interest in her and it’s that battle of trying to stay alive and also make it back to each other, yeah I loveeee this!!!

it's interesting that you brought up batiatus because i think (and feel free to give me your take 'cause i can't wait to hear your opinions on this) that he as well as lucrezia have one redeeming quality as villains that ilithyia and glaber do not: it kinda seems like lucrezia and batiatus were deeply in love and willing to overlook a lot of slights because of that love for one another whereas glaber and ilithyia came across as more in lust/infatuated and a lot more fickle
Tumblr media Tumblr media
truly so honored to be receiving these messages you don't even know!!! i love hearing what other people think about this show bc it's sooo underrated so do not hesitate to send me a million messages about whatever crosses your mind <3
i think you're right that batiatus and lucretia were more devoted to each other than ilithyia and glaber, but i think a lot of it had to do with how long they'd been together. we don't really have exact ages, but lucy lawless was in her early 40s in s1 and due to ilithyia's comment about "a women of her age" not having children, we can surmise that lucretia is probably in her late 30s-early 40s and that her and batiatus have been married for at least over a decade, possibly closer to two. on the other hand, ilithyia is portrayed as being in her early 20s (at least according to the pilot script) and her and glaber are implied to have only been married for a few years. so i think a lot of it just comes down to maturity; batiatus and lucretia have been through much more as a couple than glaber and ilithyia, especially considering their lower status and struggles for money/power. glaber does struggle for power, but he and ilithyia are clearly above batiatus and lucretia in station so i think it's safe so say they've haven't been through as much as a couple in terms of like. conflict.
we're also told that ilithyia basically begged her father to allow her to marry glaber, so clearly at some point she was deeply in love with him. i think describing them as fickle fits well, since they're younger and more impulsive than batiatus and lucretia. i don't think it means they weren't in love, just that they're both quite selfish and willing to turn on one another. glaber was clearly distraught when he learned that ilithyia was planning on divorcing him and aborting their child, but whether that was due to his love for her or the fact that he would lose an heir, and also lose any potential support from ilithyia's father, that's not really clear. in my opinion it's both; i think he clings to his marriage as a status symbol, but i also believe he loves ilithyia in his own fucked up way.
i also think ilithyia cheating on glaber with varinius and lucretia cheating on batiatus with crixus are two different situations, since varinius was a praetor in the senate with a lot of power and influence, including the approval of ilithyia's father, and crixus was a slave and therefore not really a threat to batiatus in any meaningful way. also it's shown in gods of the arena that lucretia and batiatus have a much more intense sex life than glaber and ilithyia, and batiatus wasn't jealous at all when they brought gaia into the bedroom. so. safe to say he wasn't a jealous person when it came to lucretia fucking around. but you're right that it was fucked that glaber was willing to let ilithyia die while she was kidnapped by spartacus and his gang. but i think that once again shows his desperation for power, which especially comes across when he tells spartacus he would choose killing him over having his wife back.
glaber is pretty neglectful to ilithyia during her pregnancy, and of course he just left her in capua for a while, but also i think the beginning of their marriage issues come down to ilithyia being attracted to power. glaber is at his weakest in the beginning of s2; he's constantly being outsmarted by spartacus and he's in the senate but it's clear that no one around him thinks that he really deserves to be there. varinius, seppius, and albinius are kinda treating him like shit, and he's pissed that ilithyia was involved in the massacre in any way. i think ilithyia sees this and finds his weakness incredibly unattractive, hence why she goes for varinius, a man in a more powerful position. and in the same way ilithyia is attracted to power, so is glaber. so when he gains the upper hand in their relationship later on in the season, his love for ilithyia is only reignited when she's had enough of him treating her like shit and she strikes back by killing seppia.
i find both couples fascinating, but i do agree that lucretia and batiatus have a much more stable and supportive relationship, despite being insane. ilithyia and glaber are just much more immature and they don't have the same struggles binding them together that lucretia and batiatus do. that being said, i find the power dynamics in ilithyia and glaber's relationship really interesting and i love how it all plays out in s2, especially with all the callbacks ("is there nothing left between us?"). they're just so toxic and fun <3 i love how each villain is built off each other in every season and tbh it’s so hard for me to pick a favorite bc they’re just all so complex and even tho they’re villains, i love to hate them.
