How PB Bungled Up Kiara's Experience At Homecoming Ball in TRR3.

I did address this in detail in an essay of mine, but here I'll give you just the screenshots I managed to collect of this part of the story, as the essay can be quite heavy. The essay also looks at Penelope and Madeleine's situations in addition to Kiara's, whereas this post only collected the Kiara-related screenshots.

CW: Mentions of gun violence, discussions of gun-violence-related trauma, minimization of trauma in one of the dialogues options. Overall the sequence I'm covering here is trash. That's why I'm putting all of it under the cut.

This scene, plus a suggestion that the group tour the estate with Ezekiel, lasts only one minute. The irony of this is that the best option in Kiara's case is the worst one when you suggest it to Penelope ("Cordonia can't look united if we're all back in our duchies"). Basically what is a horrible, horrible thing to say to Penelope, is absolutely fine to say to Kiara.

You do not see Kiara much after this, and you see her only twice in the next chapter. Once in a diamond scene and finally after you've gotten Joelle's support...or not. Kiara's knife wound is never mentioned here once after that first offhand question when you enter her estate.

Lythikos

Kiara approaches the MC during the ball in Ch 11, to inform her that she is withdrawing from the tour while still supporting their cause (we later find out from the armory scene that she is definitely attending the wedding). The MC can react to this in three ways:

1-3 is the response to "she's probably scared";

4-6 is for "I can't have people bail out on us now!;

7-9 is for "maybe she's leaving because she knows something".)

Two common things in all three options: Hana is trying to soften the motive to something like "reach out". Drake insists on suspecting her.

And don't think I didn't notice Maxwell trying to make a joke out of this ugly situation.

Whether or not you thought her innocent in Ch 11 - by Ch 12 the narrative by default has you and Drake especially claim that her mere request to withdraw from the tour is suspicious:

Now of course, Olivia is also a possible suspect in the same chapter, but Liam is firm in his belief of her innocence and the MC actually gets more opportunities to help her, (eg the speech and supporting her in the argument against Lucretia), rather than demand she confess like she does here with Kiara. No matter how much they cover it up with pretty words, what's happening here is very clearly an investigation of a suspect.

The scene begins with the MC raising the topic of Kiara's departure, leaving her flustered. The "nicer" option focuses on her emotions, the "suspicious" option tries to make a "gotcha" moment out of it:

I won't put too many of the screenshots about Kiara's default confessions in this post due to lack of photo space, but may try to do that in a reblog.

Kiara will be honest about her stress and fears about returning to court, her nightmares, her lack of sleep and how she used to pride herself on her rationality and "look down" on those who were more emotional (Olivia and Madeleine still look down on people who don't think like them, and somehow I never see this kind of lack of compassion thrown at them without punishment!!). But before all that, the MC gets the opportunity to "remember" what happened to Kiara:

This is basically the only thing Kiara is allowed to get angry about in this entire mess of a sequence.

Kiara then speaks in detail about her experience and the dread and weight of the event on her, and how it has messed with her head. The MC has three options to choose from in response:

1. "Understandably" Cautious:

Tbh I'm not sure about this option. I feel there is still an element of "set aside how you feel for our benefit" in this option for me to feel fully comfortable with it now. Especially when the "people Kiara cared about" themselves (like Penelope and her brother) didn't really give a shit when this same MC was badgering her to join the tour in the first place, and the MC and Drake themselves are literally only talking to her because they think she's suspicious.

2. "Suffering from the Trauma of the Event. You need help":

It's...uh...nice? I guess? I mean, it makes all the right noises and uses the right buzzwords. Clever move having Drake be the one to deliver the main monologue, to make it look like a sweet little bonding moment. The Drake stans could coo about just how wonderful their man was and for once not jump around baying for Kiara's blood. I was almost fooled by this sequence too.

Unfortunately, this option is really just one tiny drop of sewage water in a steaming pile of shit.

Because you could choose the absolute best options in this scene and that still wouldn't erase the fact that they planned to treat Kiara like a suspect. And her move that made her so suspicious in their eyes, was made because of a failure on their part. They failed to ask her in a deeper way in Castel.

3. The Really, Really Fucking Disgusting Option.

Uh. Yeah. The fact that that option exists, and the MC and Drake can get away with it - is reason enough for anyone to tell these two clowns to fuck off and never come within a 3 mile radius of them ever again. The fact that multiple people in the PB office signed off on having this option there, and that this shit even left the editing room, is appalling to me.

After this scene the MC can either close by telling Kiara she will stand by whatever decision she makes, or that Cordonia needs her - it doesn't make much of a difference. Kiara's response is the same. Something about the MC giving her a lot to think about, and then you see her again at Valtoria where she praises the MC for being a "unifier".

As for the MC and the group, she and Drake return to Maxwell to give him an update:

1. The MC and Drake feel no remorse and are in fact not even expected to feel remorse. Because for some reason, the team thinks they tackled this right.

2. Maxwell treats the questioning of Kiara like it's a joke. His response here, as well as the other dialogues in this collage, are by default.

3. The only relief I have from seeing this scene is that Liam and Hana have no part to play here at least.

The end result of this scene is that nothing much changes - Kiara still returns to court. She still calls you an inspiration. She still fights assassins alongside you at the boutique, even while retraumatized. She still tells her mother that you had her back. Which to me is an incredible lie even if you chose the best options.

We’re in ch 9 of fallacy of the damned and Vinari’s getting some quality alone time with Shida!

“Lucretia dearest was of the mind that they might interest you, so they are also enroute to the fort for you. I expect that they will arrive shortly after you do.” The undead man assured her. He was holding his chin in one hand and his elbow in the other, with his head half cocked and eyes half-lidded as he spoke, each word rolling off his tongue in a manner that reminded her of venom dripping down a serpent’s fangs.

Staring at him, Vinari considered his words. Even if he hadn’t admitted it to her face, he was clearly a creature of the Void. Despite paladin propaganda, most citizens of the Void weren’t inclined to lie any more or less than beings native to other realms. Secrecy and subterfuge were staples in Nishokan culture, not the Void’s, though the ignorant and uneducated often conflated the two. That said, Vinari knew better than to simply accept a man’s word merely because he offered it.

“Oh I do adore you Nishokans and your mind games. You’re mulling over every word that left my mouth, trying to suss out the truth, aren’t you?” The undead man laughed wholeheartedly. Black tears brimmed at the corners of his eyes and with a quick hand he carelessly wiped them away. “Fret not, my dear. I promise that no word to leave my lips will be a lie to you. If I wish to deceive you, then I will merely utter not a sound.”

“Such a bold proclamation.” Vinari noted. It makes me trust you even less.

The man bared his teeth in another feral grin, clicking his tongue as he closed the distance between them. Placing a hand on each shoulder, he looked deep into her eyes. Ghastly emerald met deep ruby like the splattering of blood across a forest floor.

Deep in his eyes, Vinari could see past the flesh he wore and gazed into his soul. Echos of abyssal wings spread afar, power primordial and ancient, the thin glistening tendrils of fate twisting and twining themselves into knots, slowly picked loose by clever hands and all seeing eyes. A Titan unchecked in power surpassed only by arrogance, brought low by a lucky blow to unfortunately mortal flesh. The glistening golden blade of a paladin. Salvation as red as blood and twice as demanding.

She could see him. And she could see the truth.

Shida, and that was his name as she so learned, jerked his head back away from hers, wrenching himself away from her, spinning on his heel and striding away. His hands spread out before clenching into fists at his side. His head hung low, his spine a straight rod of steel.

Vinari blinked once. Twice. Three times. And tried to make sense of what she’d seen.

“Amusing.” Shida muttered in a voice that sounded entirely unamused. “Ivette never mentioned that little detail.”

Vinari tilted her head.

“How did you know my mother?”

Shida glanced over his shoulder, flashing her a bitter smile.

“What did you see, if not that?”

Vinari inhaled deeply through her nose, held the breath for a moment, before letting it out with a shrug of her shoulders.

“This and that.”

“Oh?”

“What is it that you didn’t want me to see?”

“This and that.”

“Oh?”

3 The Kings of Rome

A list of the Roman kings is given:

1) Romulus

2) Numa Pompilius- peaceful character who developed most of Rome's religious celebrations

3) Tullus Hostilius- renowned warmonger

4) Ancus Marcius- founder of Ostia, the seaport

5) Tarquinius Priscus- Tarquin the Elder, developed the Forum

6) Servius Tullius- political reformer and founder of the census

7) Tarquinius Superbus- it was his tyrannical behavior that led to revolution and the establishment of a republic. It was the rape of Lucretia by one his sons that drove the people to rebellion.

This period of kings was considered non-existent by many modern historians until an ancient inscription was found mentioning the kings. Even so, once the Republic was established, no leader, even emperor, wanted the title of Rex.

Roman religion was not like religion today. There was no doctrine, no scriptures, hardly any real belief system. Roman religion wasn't concerned with salvation or even morality. It was an attempt to keep the gods on their side. Roman religion was about doing, not believing.  

Servius Tullius and the Servian constitution. He is credited with the first census, which numbered and classified Romans into ranks according to wealth. This classification was used for the army and organizing people for elections.  

The richer you were, the more, and better, equipment you could provide for yourself. There were 80 'centuries' from the first rank. 30 from each of the next four classes. Above all these were 18 centuries of cavalry, and then there were engineers and musicians. At the bottom were the poorest, who were exempt from military service.

When it came to voting, this division was meant to ensure that the rich had overwhelming voting power.

The author believes it unlikely that Rome resembled anything remotely capable of mustering the numbers required at the time of Servius Tullius. But even acknowledging this as somewhat legendary, it still gives insight into the Roman mindset. It highlighted the importance of the state over the individual citizen and the connection between the political and military roles of the citizen. It also highlighted that wealth brought both high privilege and high responsibility.

The fall of the Tarquins began the era of the Roman republic (res publica or public thing). While despising the idea of a "king", the republic's leaders were two consuls. There are three differences between king and the two consuls though. First, they were elected. Second, the term was for one year only. Third, the executive power was shared. The basic idea underpinning the republic was freedom. Over the next 800 years there would be ongoing debates about what exactly freedom meant, how far it was to be taken, and what clamps on it were reasonable in order to preserve it.

oh, sleepy johnny (or, let’s be honest, exhausted johnny) is officially a Favorite, thanks to you. every time v tried to move or dislodge him, he’d mutter something under his breath -- something mildly bratty and strongly worded and immensely endearing -- and make some sleep-weak attempt at pinning them down. he’s stubborn and doesn’t want to move and would hurl a toothless threat at them when they deactivated the blinds on their window.  and v just kind of rolls with the punches, so they do something to entertain themselves while  johnny gets another hour or two. they watch the news or count the water stains on the walls or run their fingers through his hair if they’re feeling particularly soft for him. they get calls that they don’t answer and messages they barely glance at. no one gets their time until johnny wakes his ass up.

Puck wasn’t surprised he was here, again. Not after such a spectacular performance as that. The king did so love a show, and the jester ever aimed to please, even when he was being PUNISHED. That’s what this was, wasn’t it? A punishment? Puck didn’t truly know anymore. 

He just knew the burn of the tails. They so loved the taste of his flesh, his blood coating their tongues. Where his fingers gripped onto the spokes of the wooden post he saw more blood, more waste. Bow for your king, Puck. He hates you. Smile at the audience, Puck, they love to watch you.

On and on the lash went and still he made no sound. He had nothing left to give. His performance was finished. There would be no encore; this was his finale. But why, then, did they keep jeering? Why did they keep hooting, hollering, these faeries with their fingers dripping with jewels as shiny as his blood? These faeries he-Robin, Robin, Robin They had known Robin. Robin had known them. But Puck, Puck was nothing. 

Puck was nothing more than that stain on the bottom of the king’s new shoes, nothing more than the cruelty in his hands and the way he yanked on the chain that burned around his jester’s neck before he released him to do his puppet’s dance. But he was fading now, his strings were wilting. They needed to be cut, or else he’d have no control.

Kiara's Interactions with (Some) LIs (In All Four Playthroughs) - TRR3 Ch 11.

This set of variations is an interesting one, because it follows Kiara's announcement to the group that she will be leaving court and not joining the tour. The armory diamond scene with Maxwell is split into three parts:

1. Madeleine mocking Liam/Drake over losing the MC

2. Kiara being excited about the wedding even if she is unable to continue the tour.

3. Lucretia and Olivia fighting.

In the middle scene, Kiara only gets to engage with two LIs of the four - Hana and Drake. This is because Maxwell is hiding with the MC in the armory, and because PB has a serious allergy to writing a scene where Liam and Kiara can communicate as characters 🙄

Liam:

Kiara has never been allowed a proper scene with Liam. This book continues this tradition by replacing her with her father Hakim in Liam's version of the scene.

Hana:

I do love this sequence - you can see a beautiful friendship here between Hana and Kiara and it's pretty obvious after watching this why Hana would choose Kiki as her MoH!

Maxwell:

This is another really sweet scene featuring Hana and Kiara, where they're both excited over the wedding, mostly because as Beaumonts...Maxwell and his MC would be popular for their parties. So it really draws upon the excitement of the unexpected, and both Hana and Kiara really sell the idea of that kind of anticipation here.

Drake:

I'm...not going to say much about this scene since I'll be exploring it in the essay, but Drake's behaviour here is completely fitting with that of a man who decided to arbitrarily suspect the black woman who liked him once.

This "weddings are complicated" spiel is there for two purposes - to make sure Drake was as mean as possible to Kiara so they could "reassure" the Drake stans, and to build up to his "extra wedding" in Ch 17. Yknow, the ones the Drake stans enjoyed while disingenuously complaining about how unfair PB was to him lmao. Here's a scene from the ice palace diamond scene that follows this one:

She gnawed her bottom lip before deciding to go through with her plan and knock on the door. Karen Rosen was a private investigator. A good one, if her sources were accurate. After Lucretia had erased the memories of her friends, she never expected that she would lose them. Now, several of them couldn’t be found. It was if they disappeared completely. After she fixed everything, she was going to give those memories back, but how was she supposed to do that if they were gone? Naturally, she feared the worst: that they were dead. But no bodies had turned up. She had scoured the internet, frantic, and poured through police report after police report. The police claimed that she was being paranoid as there was no indication they were missing at all. They offered her nothing. Now, she was having to go for outside help. The woman cursed herself for her stupidity. Should they be found, Lucretia vowed to be much more diligent.  As the door opened, Lucretia straightened and attempted a smile. It felt wrong on her face, so she could only imagine what it looked like. “Are you Ms. Rosen? My name is Lucretia and I think I need your help.”
