Incidental Meat
trigger warning for animal death
So I don't know where else to put this, but my wife and I butchered our first rabbit today. Prior to this the only thing we'd butchered was a pig, and that was at a workshop where we were learning how.
I was on my way home and hit the rabbit. It was pretty clean- my car broke it's shoulder and must have torn something in it's chest because it ended up bleeding out into it's chest cavity. We honestly couldn't have hoped for a better first opportunity.
We strung it up and kind of butchered it like a pig, slicing down it's belly, removing the organs, working the skin away from the muscle, then cutting off it's head and all four limbs. It went really well- we managed not to nick anything.
From killing to freezer it was less than an hour.
Tomorrow it will be dinner.
I don't really have anything grand to say about it, but at least it will be eaten. First by my wife and I, then our animals, then the bacteria and fungi that will return it to the soil in our compost. And it wont, hopefully, entice anything else to get hit by another car.

I have a huge patch of wild berry bushes, but they are so thick I can't gather 90% of the berries. Any ideas on how to tend it so I can improve the health of the patch and actually harvest something worthwhile for preserving?

2.10: Ecofascism and Rewilding: A Conversation With Ariel Kroon and Christina De La Rocha
There’s no question that the biosphere is in crisis right now thanks to human-driven global warming, our hostile takeover of most of Earth’s land area, and our pollution and overfishing of the seas. Slowing down—never mind outright stopping—the collapse of the Earth’s ecosystems and the mass extinction currently gaining pace calls for aggressively protecting the environment, or possibly even…

Chickie’s & Pete’s, Philadelphia
Tumblr media
Crab Fries are another Philadelphia staple that I hadn’t discovered until recently, but now, I try to find a Chickie’s & Pete’s whenever I visit. What are crab fries you ask?
“A Philadelphia staple since 1977, Chickie’s & Pete’s world famous Crabfries® are crinkle-cut French fries sprinkled with a secret blend of crabby spices and served with its one-of-a-kind White Creamy Cheese Sauce for dipping.”
Tumblr media
Just don’t call it Old Bay. But whatever the magic blend they sprinkle on their spuds, it’s deliciously addictive!
So while we were at Marvel Day with the Philadelphia Flyers last weekend, my buddy Steve and I made a beeline for Chickie’s & Pete’s as soon as we entered their amazing arena...
Tumblr media
Shelled out for the portion you see above, but little did we know that they were going to send over a hefty platter to our suite a few hours later...
Tumblr media
Not to be missed when you’re visiting the City of Brotherly Love!
Chickie’s & Pete’s has multiple locations around Philadelphia and New Jersey...

I’m so lucky to have a farmer friend. This morning he dropped off some chicken eggs for me but also included a nice surprise of Turkey eggs. That’s right, eggs from his turkeys. And they are some big jumbo ones and are so beautiful. Make friends with your farmer. They bring food into your life. Literally. Thank you farmers!

Capitalism’s endless economic growth prioritizes the individual over community and creates extreme inequality. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
