got a new car. having a lot of feelings abt it that i’m journaling abt on tumblr instead of processing internally. (lots of very privileged Big Money Feelings fair warning) but also look at him. momo. 🥹🥹🥹

basically after the insane amt of car troubles the last car gave me and the extra 4k it was asking from me in repairs, my dad finally was like “can you let me help you” and offered to help me buy out the loan on appa. one contingency was that i had to buy a new car, not anything used. so my car payment basically more than doubled, but i do have a car now that can take me from point a to point b and will hopefully ! not break down on me anytime soon. (with my luck tho who knows). i also still have the credit card debt from the engine but he was like “do your best to pay it off but if there is a difference at the end of the 0% apr period well see what i can help with”

i’m having! weird feelings abt it! lots of shame around having to accept money from my parents, lots of guilt around having parents that can afford to do this, also a lot of like. relief right?? i have a car that works! and he’s cute!

but also new cars freak me out dude. cars should all be dumber in my opinion. why is there an ipad on a vehicle that i can also drive at 90mph??? why is it yelling at me to brake leave me alone let me brake on my own terms!!! and every single thing is electronics. and they break so often and are so expensive to fix!! and everything these days is built to break!!! it makes me so mad and angry!!!!

but also on the other hand! i feel like i understand every single rich person neuroses now. every single speck of dust on this car is tantamount to a dent on another car. if i even scratch this car i’ll be so sad bc it’s NEW! she has 10 MILES ON HER. and there’s too many features!!! how am i supposed to learn them all!! feeling very old man yells at cloud abt it all!!! like normally i am also very generous with my car! i’ll let people drive it i don’t care etc but with this one i’m feeling extremely like don’t even breathe on him actually please don’t even look in his direction. like i’m feeling insane. u know that monopoly study they do where people become more stingy the richer they get. that’s how i’m feeling.

also having some feelings about what a new car like this looks like to people idk. like what will people perceive me as???? like this wasn’t my choice!!! tbf the car market is still insane and even a slightly used car would be abt the same price tbh but. feeling like i need to process these feelings with everyone so that no one judges me for having a new car or feels weird abt my parents having the ability and willingness to help me out here. like i understand this is mostly projection bc IM feeling weird about it and wealth (lol at the thought of wealth. i’m like 40k in debt not including student loans at 29 which feels insane.) and all that but.

he’s smaller than a lot of the suv’s i’ve had before but honestly probably enough size!!!! also the car payment is so much and idk how i’m gonna afford it for 6 years. i love him so much i can’t wait to go on a million road trips now that i can trust my car won’t break down on me in the middle of the road AGAIN. i also wanna throw up whenever i look at him. i love feeling safe and cozy and playing with all the new features. if it gives me a lane warning again i’ll blow it up myself.

Anyone who’s been following me for a while knows I worship the ground BB walks on. She’s probably among my top 3 Drarry fic authors of all time and I can confidently say I’ve read her catalogue in its entirety but curiously enough, I still get the same thrill of joy and excitement revisiting her works once twice thrice a month. BB’s narrative is very unique with nuanced and refreshing characterization, and organic witty humour playing in an effective, effortlessly charming and clever way that feels magical. It creates immersive universes and atmospheres that invite you to lose yourself into, different from anything I’ve read before or since. Beyond the incredible world building, her dialogue is a thing of beauty in itself, delightful and brilliant, packing just enough emotional resonance to make you wanna scream after a particularly clever line. It makes my job to find a quote for my recs so much more challenging! The feeling of first exploring BB’s world is exquisite and her masterful characterization never fail to impress me, it’s truly genius.

It was almost impossible to make a short list of hidden gems and it hurt my soul to stray from so many personal faves since they’re a bit more popular. But I’m sticking to the rules and that means highlighting fics that could use more attention. Words usually fail me when I’m trying to convey how much I love certain fics so feel free to check the single recs I’ve linked below - if you’re willing to suffer through my rambling thoughts, that is! I’m sure I’ve recced most of her catalogue at this point. And please please go check it ASAP, if you haven’t yet. These fics have stayed with me for many years now, they helped me through dark days and still comfort my heart whenever I need solace in fandom, I can’t imagine letting go of them anytime soon. For the Public Good (2008, T, 23k) - a brilliant satire of British politics and definitely a must-read if you’re into this genre. BB gets Draco’s snark just right and the banter is fabulous, not to mention the creative world building as per usual. Fun, smart, flirty, highly entertaining!

Harry is loaned to the Muggle government to assist relations between the two governments after the London bombings. When his counterpart in the Communications team comes to him with evidence of a plot to expose wizarding Britain, he is all ears. And only in part because the messenger has such a familiar voice.

Doing the Lambeth Walk (2012, T, 26k) - brilliant urban drama with fabulous world building, soft Draco and Harry doing good deeds and finding each other, slow burn, some family drama and non-graphic violence

There are only three traditional choices for the cashed-up hero after victory. Harry Potter is too young to settle down and provide the wizarding world with a happy ending, and has too acute a sense of humour to spiral downwards into a spectacular flame-out. Beneath Boundless Skies (2008, T, 29k) - imho this fic is a the testament to BB’s storytelling skills as it will make you laugh, cry and fall in love within minutes. What a rollercoaster of emotions! Set in the Australian landscape it delivers brilliant OCs, organic character dynamics, and the most touching, heart wrenching funeral scene. A gorgeous and poignant post-war recovery story.

Home is a world filled with funerals, a girlfriend who can't bear the sight of you, and people who are convinced you came back from the dead. Bugger it, even Australia sounds good.

The Consolations of a Summer's Day (2012, T, 32k) - this is such a delightful and well put together case fic, I adore Harry and Draco’s dynamics right from the start and how circumstances push them closer. Subtle romance, alternating POVs, a perfect Luna and a hilarious Kreacher as a treat! Cw: character death (Pansy)

Harry Potter is absolutely certain Draco Malfoy did not murder Pansy Parkinson. He’s almost absolutely certain he can prove this without sacrificing his career and having them both hauled up before the Wizengamot.

This post is for those who want to know places to get books or where I personally get mine. If you would like to add places please leave them in the comments.

Ways I acquire books:

•Libby- this is an app that connects with your library card(s). 90% of what I read I loan from my library using this as audiobooks and ebooks at times are easier for me to use.

•Kindle Unlimited- I own an old fire tablet that I just got two months of kindle unlimited for free on but personally I won’t continue it after it ends because I have a hard time with ebooks.

•Amazon- I rarely buy things on here now but they do often have a lot of books on sale. I do also browse for deals on ebooks and have gotten a plethora of ones I’m interested in for free.

•Secondhand stores- most of my collection comes from secondhand/ thrift stores. I very rarely buy a book from chain stores or for full price. This also includes antique stores.

•PangoBooks- 98% of the time if I want to buy a specific book I’ll look for it here before I look elsewhere. They also at times do give out coupons like spend $20 get $5 off.

•NetGalley- every now and then I’ll request digital arcs (ebooks and audiobooks that aren’t released yet). As long as you read the books you request and review them (or state you DNF’ed and why) on the site and keep your ratio at least at 80% of all accepted request reviewed you’re golden. But, having another place where you talk and review books does increase your chances. Personally, I have my Goodreads and Instagram account linked to help even though I haven’t touched my Instagram account in awhile.

•Library- I’ve barely checked out any books in person since I got my library card but that’s purely because I’m really trying to read my physical tbr and stay away from adding more to it.

•Gifts- if people ask me what I want for something for example my 21st birthday which is a few months away I’ll either say a certain book, an author, or a gift card to someplace that sells books. Sometimes I’ll say other things depending on the person. Now that doesn’t mean I’m expecting a bunch of books especially new ones in fact when I gave someone a list of books and author names I only gave them things that I thought they could easily find in a thrift store and always remind them that it’s not a list of things that needs to be completely bought but more of a scavenger hunt that they can end at anytime.

•Audible- for awhile I had a subscription mostly due to multiple free trials and it not cancelling even after I cancelled… Anyways, I prefer using Libby.

•Half Price Books- this is both a secondhand store and not. A good chunk of my books have come from here although these days this is mostly only my go to when I’m near one, when I don’t have time for a thrift store (I will look at nearly the entire place), or when I’m hoping to find certain more popular books.

•Barnes & Nobles- I very rarely went to Barnes even when I lived near one but every now and then I would buy some books from there. I do wish I could be near one when they do their 50% off hardcover sale they usually do on the 26th of December.

•Giveaways- I’ve won quite a few e-book giveaways on Goodreads. Personally, I’ve only won one physical giveaway and never received it. Which is pretty 50/50 when it’s the publisher doing the giveaway from what I understand.

•Dollar Tree- this is pretty hit or miss but whenever I go I make sure to check out their book section because they do sometimes have books I am interested in.

•Target- their price on books especially viz manga always gets me. Along with the deals they do every now and then like buy one get one 50% off or buy two get one free.

•Walmart- they also have about the same pricing for books as Target does but the only extra deal they do is for books they put on clearance which they put in cardboard bins.

•Book Outlet- discounted books that are pretty cheap although condition can vary. Not like extremely bad but like I have gotten a book with a small rip in the cover, the cover smushed on the top and bottom of the spine and a broken spine on a hardcover. I just think it’s better to know what the condition could be be before going into it. As long as your fine with the chance of getting that I highly recommend it. They are currently doing a fiction books sale right now where their only $5.99 and everything else is 20% off. Just dropping my referral link below if you use it you get $5 off of a $25 or higher order.

•Rightstuf (rip now is under Crunchyroll)- they had some great deals on manga, graphic novels, anime figures, and anime. I sadly didn’t take part in the birthday sale even though I really wanted to but I did make one or two purchases from them and had a good experience.

•Book of the Month- I’ve been getting books from them for just about to be a year and one month. I personally have really enjoyed it but I also will read anything that interest me and usually even if I don’t care for the months picks after watching people react to them and talk about them I want to pick up at least one of them. Book of the Month referral below.

•Aardvark- I got this one month with the discount code they always have where you get your first book for $4. There’s been a few books I wanted that they have but it’s been too rare for me.

Other ways that I haven’t yet done:

•Library sales- every now and then libraries will sell the books they no longer plan to keep in circulation and the profits go directly to the library.

•Little Free Libraries- these are strictly take a book leave a book deals. Most of these are run by a book lover who just wants to make books more accessible to people but they have to take the money out of their own pocket to keep it filled.

•Asking Publishers for physical arcs- this is the one I’m most anxious about and know the least about. From what I heard you have better chances of getting accepted for physical arcs if you have a big following. And it’s better to wait until you have had a book blog be somewhat regularly active (every week or two minimum) for six months. After that point you have to send an email to the publisher specifically asking for a certain physical arc(s), link your blog, make it professional sounding and just cross your fingers.

•Independent bookstore- I live in the middle of nowhere so the closest one to me is over two hours away (this is actually the closest bookstore period) and it’s also pretty much in the middle of nowhere. I just have a hard time paying full price so even though I love browsing through a bookstore the drive just for the bookstore that’s full price isn’t worth it.

•ThriftBooks- I like to know the condition I’m buying books in so I’ve never bought something from here as new could actually mean good condition depending on the person.

•SciFier- this is what a lot of people especially in the UK use especially for manga. It’s like a Rightstuff but from what I’ve seen better.

•eBay- I feel more comfortable with Pango’s system of just incase the seller screw’s you over than with eBay’s so I’ve never bought anything from here.

•Facebook Marketplace- I don’t have Facebook so I’ve never used this but I have seen some good deals.

•Garage/Yard/Estate Sales- I haven’t been to any of these in quite some time but when I did go things were quite cheap because they just wanted to get rid of things.

•Illumicrate- special edition book subscription service

I’ve seen a few people saying that since Camilla has worn the Girls tiara, it means we won’t be seeing Catherine wear it until she becomes queen herself. Is this how things are done - there is only one person who can wear a particular tiara at a time? To be honest I don’t keep track of jewels and tiaras like some others, but I know Queen Elizabeth wore a variety of tiaras that others also then wore (while she was still alive), but I don’t know if it was on a “one person at a time” basis? To me it seems like no issue if Camilla wears the Girls now, and next time Catherine wears it if she wants, but maybe there is some “protocol” I’m unaware of?

No nothing formal like that, its just that the brf usually does not share tiara like the other rfs; so it's mostly like once you wear one tiara it becomes yours till whenever. And they do lifetime loans too so once it goes to you then it goes to you.

Kind of like why nobody except catherine wears the Lover's Knot or the Lotus Flower, sophie wears the Anthemion or the aquamarine and diamond tiara. Its the same for other jewellery pieces too, they hardly share them. And i hate it. So that's why I and others think Catalina won't be wearing the Girls anytime soon.

Also because of this 'tradition' (if that's the right word for it) we'll probably never get to see what's what in the vault ever or for a long time. Someone needs to teach the brf the 'sharing is caring' phrase which they hammered us with in kindergarten.

The Swedes for example rotate tiaras among members often but not the Brits. Hope this changes under chuck but I don't think it will tbh. Or another thing they can do is assign some jewels as per the rank (like reserve a few for the queen for example etc) and have the other pieces from the vault be shared/rotated amongst the fam. Someone really needs to tell bp this.

January 7 — Contest, Portions, and Biking

What I ate today:

Cold brew

Cold brew with coconut milk, protein bowl: fried egg, quinoa, zucchini, bean sprouts and idk what else

1/2 Cobb salad no croutons no blue cheese crumbles with blackened mahi at the start of my shift and half at the end

First of all, please please please vote for me in this contest! I normally don’t do stuff like this and I don’t even know for sure if it’s real or a scam, but if I did win that would allow me to be an artist full time and I could create so many cool things for the world. And I wouldn’t have to be too busy with my day job to post!

Now to the other juicy stuff! I think my fullness sensors are off because I don’t really feel full when I eat even relatively large meals. From what I understand, our stomachs are physically only supposed to be the size of our fist. I can eat a lot more than that in one sitting before I feel full, so I’m going to eat a similar amount of food to what I’ve been eating in a day, but in terms of physical volume I’m going to keep it to about the size of my fist per meal.

Also, I bought a bicycle today. It was cheap because the bike shop used it for rentals last year, so it’s not the best bike in the world. Single gear, no lights, no bell. They gave me a basket which is nice, but it’s crooked. But it’s only $100, so it basically pays for itself once I’ve gone to work and back 3 times on it. With tip, my cab rides to work are $18-20 one way, and about $10 around town. PLUS this helps me with my fitness goals! Since it’s a fixed gear, I can’t go very fast on it. My speed is only about 10 mph on it right now. Today I biked almost 16 miles! Honestly I don’t feel tired, even after working a 7 hour shift as a server.

Right now my watch is showing me at 16.5k steps for the day and 108 active minutes, which might include a couple minutes from my morning walk to the bike shop.

So yeah! I’m excited to save money on transportation, improve my endurance, and have some extra money to spend on other things! I feel like I also took a lot of my money back when Karisa “loaned” me her cold brew maker. I’ll happily give it back whenever she wants, but she doesn’t really drink coffee and her boyfriend uses a French press, so I don’t think she’ll need it anytime soon. I’ll probably buy my own similar device if she ever takes it back, though.

Last thing I want to say is that I really enjoyed my bike ride home. One thing I will really miss about the keys once I eventually move out is the night sky. Because the islands are basically villages, there isn’t a lot of light pollution, and the stars are so pretty to look up at. Tonight is the night after a full moon, so everything was lit up so much that I turned my lamp off. It was serene.

I feel like for a awhile I was just existing in life, but not really enjoying the present moment because I was constantly working. While being laid off isn't good news, the positive outcome is that I paid off my student debt and I am debt free. Which takes the burden off my shoulders.

These days I'm a bit hesitant to go back to the 9-5 grind. It wasn't because I had a terrible experience at my job but I defiantly felt like a cog in a wheel where I was just churning money to make my employer rich but not really living the life I really wanted. Of course, I think it's human nature to feel like we have a greater purpose beyond our day jobs, but when it comes to making money, it's not easy creating that balance either. I just got very lucky to find employment and pay off my student debt quickly. I can't imagine people who have steeper student loans who have to work for their employer forever to pay off their debt. These days, I'm seeing people who admit they have so much debt that they will be working for their employer forever. It sounds really depressing and I'm thankful I'm not in that situation, but somethings that school never taught me is how to live beyond what I was told which was to find a job. If you think about it, the reason why we spend time in school is to eventually get a job.

I feel like I don't have issues with working, but if the layoff news taught me anything. I'm just a tool that can get discarded anytime whenever a company feels like it's the most convenient for them. To be fair, I guess it can go both ways where an employee can job hop and work for another company whenever they feel it's convenient for them too. It doesn't matter if I worked incredibly hard, everyone can be replaced. I feel like employees don't really have much to say whenever there's a layoff. It's really out of their control. Just one day, the source of where your entire identity lies can disappear, then your left wondering who you are as a person. I feel like society does put a lot of attention into our jobs to identify someone. I think just living for work seems like a lonely existence, and we should try to work to live the life that we want. That part is really hard to achieve.

So heading into 2024. I'll be jobless for the first time in over six years. But strangely enough, I'm also free to explore other options that might make feel happier. I'm thankful to not have too many financial obligations. It would be a different story if I had a spouse or family, but I'm just by myself. Still single, exploring my options, and don't have any financial burdens. If this experience did teach me anything, it does make me question why am I working incredibly hard for an employer who don't really care about me in the end? I don't really have a compelling reasons besides just churning money, but I feel like life is more layered then just making money. My time is also really valuable too.

I always question if anyone was in their deathbed, would someone really ask their boss for more money or more hours to work? People have different reasons to stay at their jobs that doesn't make them feel happy, but when your single, debt-free, and don't really have much responsibilities but yourself. You do question why you are working at job that isn't as fulfilling. Well, the question is, can someone feel fulfilled and happy at their jobs? These days, not sure what that suppose to mean or feel like.
