Hey y’all, I’m currently hard at work on a (pretty broad and somewhat comprehensive) linocut zine that I’m gonna make available as PDFs for free once it’s all out of my head and onto the page. It’ll detail a lot of my personal processes, give a really foundational knowledge of materials/tools, and hopefully just generally be a useful resource for folks looking to get into linocut….. also, it’s very obviously an excuse for me to infodump about something that is basically always consuming at least 60% of my brain.
Just wanted to pop over here to remind y’all that my asks are always open and if you have any questions about my process (or about linocut more generally), please feel free to shoot me an ask. You don’t gotta feel weird about it or like you’re bothering me or whatever. I treat nothing as proprietary, fucking looooove talking about printmaking, and am finding answering questions to be really useful to me as I attempt to outline what needs to go in this zine. I also have a Q&A stories highlight over on Instagram if that’s easier for ya.
Thanks for reading! Big love, happy carving.

"See here, sir! See what my wife found in its crop!" He held out his hand and displayed upon the centre of the palm a brilliantly scintillating blue stone...of such purity and radiance that it twinkled like an electric point in the dark hollow of his hand.
This print is inspired by the Sherlock Holmes story "The Blue Carbuncle": 'tis the season for wild goose chases, and of course, larceny (if you can bring it off).

[image description: photo of an in-progress linoleum block for relief printing. The image is drawn on the surface with pencil and carbon paper, of a snarling dog with its mouth held open by two hands. End description.]
Been percolating on this one for a while :)))

Some lino prints before September starts.
My current D&D character is partly inspired by The Silt Verses, just not by The Many Below...or so I thought until recently.
I originally intended to draw in the details on the last one, but this is the only sample so far and my teacher and I both got oddly sad just looking at it. The stamp was made based on a drawing I did in July.

Starting to find inspiration in facial expressions...
I'd like to start a new illustration for an 18x24 linocut. Filling all of that space with subjects that feel worthy of it is challenging, so I might need to spend more time in the sketching phase than I'm used to.

tried a new method of transferring my image to a linoleum block that actually worked really well!!
first I cut my image using old vinyl and my cricut machine (make sure this is mirrored!!)
after you weed your cut place it on your block, and use a mixture of 3/4 water to 1/4 acrylic paint to lightly coat on top of your linoleum. This ensures that when it dries and you peel the vinyl off, your design still stays on your block!
Tumblr media
I chose a light orange color to stain my golden linoleum, the acrylic mixture dries pretty fast so after it dries and you peel it off you are ready to carve or tweak your design!

Hi! I was wondering for printing on fabric bc you have to use more ink, but also in general, how do you get the paint to not like squish over the edge of your relief and fill in the tiniest crevices?
Hey! So it’s sort of a balancing act: if your ink is squishing over the edges of your block, you’re over-inking or applying too much ink too quickly…. And honestly you may have to over ink to compensate for other factors like not being able to apply enough pressure when printing or that particular fabric not being well suited for being easily printed upon. You kinda gotta choose your demons. But yeah, if ink is getting into the carved sections of your block, try applying thinner layers and using less ink. You want the surface of the ink to be sort of velvety - not quite orange-skin-y …. if that makes sense.
I really think using a lever press is a huge advantage for me here because I’m able to more easily apply really intense, even pressure across the block while printing. I’d say try and find a way to apply more pressure when printing if you can!! And don’t shy away from the chatter and noise and imperfections of hand printed clothing because it honestly gives it soooo much more character.

handbinding of A Study in Scarlette by kittebasu
There are people who want to live forever, and then there is Shinichi, who just wants to live a little longer than this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
this bind has been in my head since i first read the fic like, three years ago. i dreamed up so many ideas for it, for so long, and now it's finally done! the typeset was actually done in early 2022, back when i was still using google docs, but it went through a few iterations because i was just. so. fiddly. with every aspect of this book. it needed to be perfect (as close to perfect as i, an amateur bookbinder out of my depth, can get) and it had to be absolutely over the top, to reflect the insane amount of love and care that the author put into the fic itself.
the first time i read this fic, i barely knew what detective conan was, much less all of the intricate plot details; i was just along for the ride, but by the end i was completely invested. i went back and watched through the anime as well as a few movies (it took me six months) and then read the fic again. and then a few more times. kaishin and the world of dcmk has utterly gripped me. it's 100% this fic's fault and i love it so, so, much.
i went through a few iterations of visual designs and i'm really happy with the little details i managed to squeeze in.
the entire color scheme is based around red, because 1) it's a murder mystery, 2) for scarlette shinamoto (and the title of the fic as well as the original holmes novel it references), and 3) the irony of "lady red" actually being red. the secret fourth reason is that i think red/gold is a super sexy color combo.
i sewed the textblock with red thread to reference holmes' "scarlet thread of murder".
Tumblr media
another detail i love is the five yen coin bookmark, it was one of my first ideas and it turned out even better than i thought.
Tumblr media
i wanted the endpapers to evoke a sense of the white marbled floor of the ballroom, with the glow-in-the-dark kaitou kid caricature being the luminol on the floor, and the little pops of red looks like blood that's been mixed in. i lucked out in that the other side of the endpaper was like a lavender-purpley color, i like to think of it as a little wink wink nudge to the color of the actual Lady Red.
Tumblr media
the chapter pages got a few reworkings, but i'm happy with the illustrations i ended up doing for each of them. the chapter titles are one of my favorite things about the fic, each one has so much meaning packed into it and flows so beautifully, and i wanted to put as much care into making them pop as possible.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the cover was a linocut carving i designed and carved, which i then printed onto the bookcloth, and ironed on htv on top.
Tumblr media
i also threw in a couple of my drawings of my favorite scenes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is getting way too long, so i'll end it here. i'll have a separate post detailing the process every step of the way, if anyone wants to take a closer look. this fic is kind of directly responsible for getting me into fanbinding, so it's safe to say it altered the course of my life. i now spend way too much time (and money) looking at book stuff.
kittebasu, if, somehow, you see this and would like an author copy, i would be honored to make one and ship it to you; i would be overjoyed to gift you with any art i have the ability to make, because the fics you wrote have irreversibly altered my brain chemistry, and being able to give back in any capacity would be a dream. (thank you.)
a few postscripts:
i am not selling any copies of this fic. partially because i believe in the gift economy of fandom as well as firmly keeping fanbinding a hobby that will stay unmonetized, but also because it took me months (years, if we are counting when i first finished the typeset) to finish this and i do not have the strength.
however, if you are also a fan of this fic and would like a copy, i honestly, fervently, encourage you to give fanbinding a try! renegade publishing and its discord server are an absolutely wonderful and free resource. i knew nothing about bookbinding and had zero materials when i first started, but i've learned so much thanks to the lovely people there. if you're still apprehensive about getting started, i'd be willing to share my typeset of this fic as well as answer any questions about the making of this book if you DM me.

heey i have a band and want to make tshirts to sell at our next show, do you have any easy/cheap diy ideas that look nice? silkscreening is too expensive, and i'm not shure if a stencil + fabric paint would stand the test of time...
Okay this craft is thin foam board paper, cardboard, and hot glue, super glue if u can whateever to get that down.
First draw the design you want on the tshirt. Make it simple enough you can cut it out with scissors. Here im drawing out the words again and again playing with making each letter a solid shape with no holes, playing with letter sizes and fonts, trying to draw it smaller and bigger to see how it feels.
Then the finalised logo and size is done in tracing paper so it can be flipped :3 u can also use white paper, flip it, then shine your phone light under it, and draw the logo on the otherside. i just find havi a reference to work off of and getting familiar with the shapes your working with helps.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You cut the logo out of the foam board, then place it on the cardboard flipped to make the mirror image of your logo. Glue down all the foam pieces. I fucked up the D in my logo because i glued it on the wrong side. So i just cut it out again in some green foam.
Tumblr media
Make sure to cut off the excess cardboard on the edges. Then tada you have a stamp!
To begin printing with your stamp use a roller to apply fabric paint to it. I personally use speedball fabric ink it is better for rolling onto stamps. The ink stays wet for a long time, applys well to fabric, washs away easy, and it stays better.
I use a rubber speedball roller as well as it applys it evenly. you can definitely diy a roller from a lint roller wrapped in smth. I use an overpriced $40 handle to press down the stamp to fabric. Before i used a heavy mug to press them down.
As you can see by how bad and uneven the color is in the below photo of my first print with the stamp, what really matters is taking your time to apply pressure and your body weight over all of the stamp. And making sure to take your time. It makes the difference in the tshirt print as you can see that i figured out to apply evenly.
If a patch doesnt come out even, you can come back in with a paint brush to fill in the gaps so it looks cleaner, as i did with that patch later.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Good luck with making your tshirts!! I cant wait to start making tshirts myself! So far all ive done is my own clothing but just you wait :3
Also i use wet wipes to try wipe it off. Its not linocut so you cant wash it. So making sure theres no paint on the cardboard before you print is important.
