I finished both Heroes (2022) and My Sassy Princess today. Heroes is the better show, imo, and more for people who are into plot, whereas My Sassy Princess is for the romantics, with scenes that are surprisingly steamy for a 2022 C-drama. Both had action scenes and fairly cohesive aesthetics and a female lead who vacillated between annoying and interesting. And fantastic theme songs! Otherwise, they have nothing in common, lol.

Heroes got a 4.063 on my scoring scale, which exactly ties with Word of Honor. Which I guess makes sense, they're both really enjoyable but clunky in some respects, with endings that are... something. WOH gets better if you watch the epilogue. But Heroes has an ending where you're like, "Okay, that fits, I'm good with that" and then you remember the 'foreshadowing' in the first episode and you're like, "Wait a minute, what the fuck?" So yeah, Heroes is a slightly tropey jianghu-but-not-pure-wuxia tragedy with a confusing ending. I think they forgot about their first episode- it would have been fine except for that scene. I still enjoyed it, overall, but I'm a little mad I wasted the whole show worrying for nothing.

Please look up trigger warnings if you're going to watch Heroes, btw. There's some common triggers in it. Personally, I think they could have done without but it was in the source novel, so I guess they felt obligated or something, idk. And the resolution to that arc was a bit disappointing. Seeing the resulting fight scene would have been more fulfilling for the viewer.

My Sassy Princess ended up with a 3.5 score. This ties it with Ming Dynasty, Mystic Nine, Lost Tomb 2.5, Ever Night, Falling Into Your Smile, and Love of Thousand Years. All shows that were fun to watch but with flaws in the story or characters, or the CG, editing, or effects, or that are just painful to contemplate rewatching (looking at you, Ming Dynasty). Overall middle of the pack dramas. I've already complained a bit about My Sassy Princess's flaws. The acting was more solid in the last third, but the plot was not strong. I heard they lopped off like ten eps during editing or pre-airing review, and it shows. It's overall clumsily executed. Ending was well suited to the story/characters so that was okay, and the soundtrack, especially the themes, was really nice.

Judging by the reviews, a lot of viewers besides me seemed pleased by the kiss scenes, which were not steamy by Western standards but were far more sensual than more Chinese dramas. I think I've only seen two or three kiss scenes in a C-drama that were more sensual (one was in Mystic Nine, actually- Foye and the missus had a good one the second or third time they kissed onscreen. Definitely not the first one, but the second or third). They were still more in the realm of "mash faces together and hold still a bit" but there was some effort here to play pretend. So if you're a sucker for romance with onscreen kisses, but don't like tongue, this might be the drama for you.

And I did not think I would be spending my Saturday evaluating onscreen kisses, but here we are.

Okay now that I got 5 hours of sleep I think I’m ready to talk abt the final ep

I think it did the good parts really well like the whole fukufuku scene and fukuchi’s death. The way they managed to convey the depth and weight of their relationship was amazing, and the scenery was very pretty. I still think fukuchi’s plan was silly and unrealistic and a bit too idealistic but it made sense. That’s just the guy he is lol. Also going back a little bit, I think their fight was well animated, both in the choreography and emotional sense. And yeah it makes sense why they put so much effort in to the old man yaoi scenes now.

The tears in teruko’s eyes when she ended up being the one to stab fukuchi made me want to scream. I really didn’t like teruko until this moment (I suppose I did grow an appreciation for her bc of her voice acting a few eps ago) but this just completely flipped my opinion of her. And the way she told atsushi to leave them alone to give them their moment was also great.

I’m really interested to see where fukuzawa will go from here because he just got all of these burdens he never wanted placed on him in a matter of seconds. Suddenly he’s credited with killing fukuchi and then the one order which he wants to destroy but he can’t because that would invalidate fukuchi’s death and his purpose in life.

That all being said, I’m not really satisfied with how the prison arc ended. I thought that the prison arc would end up being one of my favorite arcs once it ended (it felt like it was dragging a bit even more bc of monthly releases) but I felt like it all ended a bit too simply?

Chuuya was never a vampire and skk made up their plan on the spot which does show how well they work with each other and how dazai’s different from fyodor, but it did kind of feel like a cheap cop out. Like all that build up and the resolution just kinda… fell flat. I’m not too hung over on it tho it still made sense and serves its purpose.

I honestly expected more with fyodor. Maybe it was bc dazai had this whole convoluted way of contacting the outside so I expected fyodor’s to be over the top as well but his answer was just vampires (again it all makes sense, it was just much simpler than what I expected). I don’t believe that he’s dead there’s no way that man died from a helicopter crash, but even that “death” seemed a bit mundane for someone like him. Nikolai’s reaction and voice acting to fyodor’s death was amazing tho. The way his voice lost its cheerfulness and him debating whether he actually wanted fyodor’s death… very nice.

Also why did dazai just leave sigma in the prison? I don’t think he was joking when he said that he’d make sure sigma would make it out alive. But he started walking away from the prison like sir no go back. His og plan genuinely might’ve been to use sigma to figure out fyodor’s plans that changed when chuuya got here, but I still don’t think he would leave sigma like that.

I don’t think the manga and anime will diverge imo? Iirc asagiri said that he had the prison arc story done like last year, so it’d be weirder if bones went nah we’ll make our own ending. I just hope that the manga will take it at a slower pace and show more moments in between bc the anime felt rushed and felt like it was trying its best to put a ribbon on things. Maybe it feels even more like that bc lbr the manga was going at a snail’s pace for a long time and we were stuck in those 30 minutes for how long now? And all of a sudden it’s like boom time passes.

Also there’s just so many unanswered questions like what about the other half of the page? Is the ada still considered terrorists? Who’s getting transferred to the pm? Where is yosano? Don’t tell me they just forgot to include her. What’s fyodor’s ability and his plans? What the actual fuck is going to happen to sigma? What happened to Margaret actually? How are the pm vampires? Also might be just me but the two hours later scene felt a bit unnecessary. Maybe it was to hype up the manga readers for what’s going to happen and the anime only’s for whenever s6 is going to come out (in several years maybe) but to add that when there’s so many loose threads… I suppose we got to see akutagawa in a new fit tho. I’m praying that these unanswered questions are intentional and they’ll be answered in the manga since the anime tends to gloss over a lot of details or in the beginning of s6 and they just didn’t explain everything for *intrigue.*

This definitely felt like the flimsiest finale we got so far, but we’re finally out of fukuchi and prison hell (although apparently he comes back like 2 hours later).

This is the post I was working on that I accidentally sent privately before I’d finished it, LOL. Thanks @imorahtarm107 for sending it back after what must have been a confusing request. 

CONT: Rebecca Sugar  has spoken before about how much they dislike the statement by press that Bubbline only became “canon” in the finale, because Sugar and Muto were working on that pairing all the way back in s3, those characters have been canonically queer the whole time. It’s not some novelty thing that was canonized at the very end just because everyone else was doing it, or that the characters were only queer and dating if they got to kiss on the mouth! 

So yeah, I was a bit salty abouta  few things. I mostly thought that season 10 had been underwhelming compared to the spectacular seasons 7 to 9. Honestly, I still stand by that opinion because those seasons were really good. 

I felt that there were some other things missing from s10, but some of those got followed up either in the finale or in Obsidian, albeit less in depth than I’d have liked (primarily the fallout to Elements on the side of the Elementals themselves - I thought this was only appropriate considering what happened in Jellybeans Have Power. Are they not terrified of themselves? What are the long term consequences of that takeover, if any? It seems much bigger than the stuff with the Lich that barely anyone knew about.)  

HOW MY THOUGHTS HAVE CHANGED

Well, honestly? Just hearing more from the crew about the problems they faced on CN, not just the AT crew but also Rebecca Sugar with SU, it clears SO much up. 

Kent Osborne said to Ghostshrimp in a podcast that, even though they knew the show was ending, the team had no idea how many episodes they had left! Unlike the earlier seasons where CN just made block orders of 52 eps, it seems like from s6 onwards, things were far less stable. CN no longer ordered consistent season lengths. I’m not sure if they instead ordered blocks of eps, or if they gave the crew a flexible budget to work from, like Legend of Korra had. 

From my observations and theories, the reason seasons 7 to 9 have so many miniseries is possibly because Adam Muto was using those as a way to appeal to what CN wanted out of Adventure Time, and therefore, to prolong the lifespan of the show. It worked really well as both standalone miniseries and as episodes of the show. Olivia Olsen commented that there were many times they thought they were on the last season but it turned out they weren’t.  Adam Muto pitched the first eps of Distant Lands originally as miniseries to “extend” season 10. He was probably hoping he would be successful! 

Unfortunately, this time he was not successful, and Kent Osborne said that the crew were taken off guard by Come Along With Me being their last ep. When they started work on it, they thought it was a special in the middle of what could be a longer season. Kent even believed they would’ve had another 26 eps left. Adam had to beg for an extra couple of months so they could figure out how they could turn what would have been a gumbald special (whatever that would have entailed) into a finale for the entire show! 

Watching Come Along With Me with the knowledge that the crew were taken so off guard changes entirely what I think of it, because what originally seemed like lazy rush jobs - Simon turning back but not having any time as himself, the ep havingt so much going on, the conflict between Bonnie and Gumbald being a bit empty - now feels like the best possible outcome!! How on earth did they make Come Along With Me as good as it was?? They gave so many characters good moments, they had the whole thematic resolution to the land of Ooo and the themes of the world going in circles but nothing staying the exact same, they paid respects to Finn’s growth, and had the outro as the finale song while showing life goes on! 

Now that I’ve had so long to process exactly what happened in the ep, I greatly appreciate so many scenes that I previously overlooked or dismissed. The intro sections by Steve and Tom are brilliant at building up tension, which is part of why the second section feels so jarring. However, the dream sequence is so funny, with interesting imagery that it’s still nice to pick apart. Jake gets to be a good brother, Finn gets to battle Fern, and you have that chilling swapperoo epiphany with Gumbald and PB. The scene where they’re all on the beach is so cathartic. 

Then the second half of the special is just intense start to finish - everyone working together at the culmination of their character arcs, to take down GOLB! Until the power of a little robot’s song turns out to be the best tool of holding it back, and Betty performs the ultimate sacrifice for her mistakes with a smile on her face. So good.  The ending scenes with Finn and the treehouse, Shermy and Beth, the music hole, those are a thematic conclusion to the show. 

So, yeah, it did a great job. To an extent it’s better enjoyed if you pick it apart than if you watch it all at once, since it’s unfortunately not as hard-hitting as a lot of the single 11-minute eps of Adventure Time, including the previous season finale Three Buckets. However it absolutely does its job.

As for Bubbline, well...  Adam was trying to get the show extended, and if anyone looks at the twitter comment I currently have as my pinned post, then you’ll understand that there’s no way PB and Marcy could have kissed or made their relationship undeniably explicit unless it was the very end of the show :/ 

Adam said himself that he didn’t see it as much his fight to battle the decisions of execs as Rebecca did. And while that hurts, it makes sense - he was the owner of someone else’s show that is a smorgas board of a large number of people’s ideas, whereas Rebecca was the owner of their own show and felt that if they weren’t able to express themself in their own show, Sugar was willing to completely take down SU. And that actually happened - Steven Universe got cancelled immediately!!! Adam was not prepared to do that with AT, especally when CN were already talking about cancelling it. 

The good news is he didn’t give up on having PB and Marcy’s relationship be at least fairly clear, especially s7 onwards. I don’t know what happened behind the scenes, but it’s likely a number of the crew members taken on at that time found it important to press for Bubbline, and Adam decidedly agreed. If someone other than him had taken over as showrunner, or even if Pen stayed in charge (he supported it but didn’t want to be wrapped in controversy), I wonder if they’d have never interacted after What Was Missing :/ 

So yeah, with that in mind, as annoying as Marcy and Hunson still is, I can forgive the crew for doing a finale kiss. Rather, I can really thank Hanna K for pressing for one - she knows how important it was to at least confirm what people had expected, without a retroactive tumblr post ala Korrasami.

it’s been a bit now so. misc 200/end of mag in general thoughts? under a cut because this is a bit long, and i will preface this to say that i mostly enjoyed the episode but this is going to be mostly my criticisms, bc i feel like the good parts have already been well covered by people other than me. so yeah just a warning this is mostly crit

- it’s Still very hard for me to parse how i feel about this episode, but i think after sitting on it for a bit, i’ve come to the general conclusion that i am very satisfied plot-wise (in terms of tragedy/the structure of tragedies, the open-endedness of our ending, the general Writing TM), but not so much satisfied character-wise (in terms of arc and relationship resolution). I think we deserved more resolution on wtgfs -- i wanted more with them! more with melanie and jon; more with the melanie and georgie and basira’s side of the plan. more than that really small tidbit that we got at the end! and... honestly? a little bit more emphasis on the weight of Jon actually dooming other worlds in the end, and what that means for Jon and for wtgfs/basira. Especially with the context of the consequences re: the Web...won. no caveats or complications, the Web got. Exactly what it wanted.

- on that note,  From a uh. Critique against capitalism standpoint I’m not sure how I feel about the ending? And I don’t really want to. Read too much into what isn’t there? But I mean mag has long been a pretty explicit anticapitalist narrative so...? Yeah, I’m not a big fan of the implications of WTGFs and basira basically just being treated as narratively right in terms of letting the eldritch evil stand-in for capitalism have whatever it wanted and feeding it and doing exactly what it asked them to do. and having Little consequence as a result of that. Obviously they’ll still face loads of hardship, but that comes from the apocalypse, not from, like,.,, doing the direct bidding of the Capitalist Monster/System/etc to be clear, i’m not like...mad they made the “wrong” decision; there was no wrong or right decision here. but I am a little upset that for all they spent 199 discussing the various consequences of each choice, we got to see very little of that actual consequence playing out...none of the survivors seem to really be carrying the guilt or even the full understanding of what they did, because they never saw the suffering they could create as anything more than a hypothetical. i feel like we could have spent just a bit more time with them dealing with that. a bit more time even with jon dealing with that, a bit more time spent on jon changing his mind. other people have said as much better than me but. yeah

- i feel like there was a lot of character stuff brought up in s5 and especially act iii that i would’ve loved to have seen more resolution of. why have that whole thing about Georgie telling jon to give melanie his last words himself, if Jon was going to come back but then never bring that up again (full disclosure this is smthn that @pronouncingitwang​ brought up!)? Why have Jon say he was “going to go  apologize to [his] boyfriend”/Jon tell Martin multiple times that they were going to talk about their fight “later” and then not have that happen on screen? Why did we have two whole episodes of cultist interactions if they were just going to be removed off screen? Why have martin’s “I’ll get jon to destroy me like the others” decision if that doesn’t really come up? what about salesa!! why tell us melanie hating jon is a projection of her self hatred and then not bring that up again? why give annabelle all those juicy interactions with martin and then turn her into a monster when jon shows up, why give her so much character and backstory and then so thoroughly remove her agency? why have all these really cool parallels between jon and annabelle if annabelle is just going to be this monstrous and agency-less plot device with no follow-up? what happened to her!

- on that note...annabelle. They... really took this character who is a Black woman and who had so many parallels to Jon and who they could’ve like. very easily Actually made into a protagonist of color (because we only got one!! and she’s a cop!!!!) (or if not protagonist, at least smthn more sympathetic), (which wouldn’t have negated previous racial problems w tma, but would’ve shown growth from them) and made her a scary monster who just Serves her capitalist entity overlord without personal agency and then bows out when she’s no longer needed...you can have whatever diagetic/watsonian explanations you want for how 197 went, like sure she was just ~being dramatic~ and putting on a show for jon, but all that is still something the writers Decided to do in the real world, and the racial implications of her character arc are just. not great. and her character had So much more narrative potential. idk i will forever be salty about annabelle

- i Still Don’t Like the web being sentient!! i said this after 197 and i’m sayin it again! i think it makes it less frightening and less interesting! with the End being aware of its own, well, end, I actually thought that worked, and i really liked the corpse routes ep, but for some reason I didn’t with the Web? which seems hypocritical of me, I know, but, look: The embodiment of the fear of dying being aware of and welcoming its own dying emphasizes the inevitability and the truth of that fear. Which is why it works for the End. It’s still not recognizably /human/, because it is inexorable and certain, in a way nothing human can be. So its awareness of its own end DOESNT feel like flattening the worldbuilding. And using my own logic, I guess sure you could say the embodiment of the fear of manipulation and schemes being capable of scheming does the same thing but it. It rly doesn’t feel the same to me? Bc that’s rly a fear borne of human sentience & behavior. and so to give it that sentience makes it feel more human, and less interesting within the context of the horror. this is definitely just a personal taste thing as far as how i like horror and eldritch deities and such but yeah.

- i liked the statement a lot like, as a little self contained story? it was really nice to have jon give us one last story before the end. I thought that was sweet and i liked how the statement was written! on the same note though, i could’ve also gone without knowing like. the entire cosmology of how the fears came into being. again, just a personal thing, i don’t like my horror to be known, even at the end of it all when it doesn’t matter what we’re still scared of anymore. I just. I want my fears to be frightening and beyond comprehension and unknowable. it just leads me to have more questions than i really need at the Final episode? i would love to keep the jon giving us one final statement thing, and you know what? i would've loved: statement of the archivist, regarding jonathan sims. no idea what you’d do with that but it sounds cool in my head.

- very minor and very specific-to-me thing but i Don’t Like that basira got to be the Last Words...sorry y’all I just don’t like basira i can’t get behind trying to make me feel sympathetic for a cop who stood by and let people get murdered by the state for years and only felt bad about it bc fearpocalypse i just can’t. i don’t like her never have never will and also melanie and georgie are right there why didn’t they get to have the last words it would have been so much better ... why not have the person who loved jon and Knew very deeply his tendency to self-sacrifice say something or why not the person who is in-canon very similar to Jon and self-admittedly projecting her self hatred onto him say some sort of her own attempt at peace why not either of these two ahhhh

- i uhhhh. really liked jon killing jonah. jon for once getting to be angry for himself. that felt really nice. no ceaseless watcher nonsense either, just him and a knife and beating the shit out of this guy who even now continues to underestimate and belittle him. and i liked jon doing what he did in general -- i actually changed my mind on this; i really didn’t like it at first but i do now. i’m sad that it came at the expense of his promise to martin, but it makes sense and...i don’t want to say jon was right, because i again don’t think any of the decisions were right per se, but in terms of like... not doing what the “elder fear deity who wants to feed on fear and pain for literal eternity” wanted... yeah. i get it. he would never have been able to go along with that willingly. and he really shouldn’t have been, considering all that he went through being a puppet for said elder fear deity. and from a tragedy standpoint too, i actually think it’s a really really well written end for him. considering how my favorite tragedies are structured and how the way out has to be presented to us, but the tragic hero Ultimately will always fall back on their faults, yeah, this makes a lot of sense. hamlet is granted a way out and he doesn’t take it; he always always hesitates. captain ahab is granted the chance to turn and leave his chase and love instead, and he doesn’t take it. orpheus turns around. etc etc. I think it was also really lovely that jon got a twist on that, that in the end he did change, for just a moment, and chose love instead. even in the face of all the horror that that might mean. i really like that he and martin are together, wherever or however they are. that martin is allowed to feel (rightly) furious and betrayed and still so, so unconditionally in love. 

idk i have more thoughts probably but again they’re very hard to parse and mostly just getting into the super specific realm which i don’t think is particularly helpful

i have a lot of feelings for jon and martin and their ending i think it was the best possible ending we could’ve gotten for those two and i Am really. I just have a lot of feelings.

If you had the chance to rewrite zexal what would you change abt it and what you you put more focus on?

😳 Okay well… Let’s see. I’m no writer. And admittedly, I’m not as versed in episode citing as much as other people I know. I’m just that person who, after watching something else, will come back to zexal and look at it wondering: “Why is literally nothing happening ever?” So bear in mind my lack of tact and proper vocabulary. 

I’d probably keep it more or less the same… but with a couple shifts here and there. More indulgent stuff on my end is having the Numbers Club y’know, actually DO things. And it’d be nice to have Astral and Yuma have a slight falling out and work build up trust again post-sargasso before he dies.

Most of what my brain jumps to when it comes to “stuff in zexal i’d wanna full on rewrite” revolves almost primarily around Rio and Nasch stuff since I don’t really like it’s execution in the first place. …And Tori. But Tori might likely have to be a separate discussion altogether. So, I guess I’m trying to make a more semi-realistic scenario within certain boundaries? Ex. No adding other episodes, and if something is taken away something new must be added in. And aside from one duel, duels will remain the same. 

FIRST AND FOREMOST: Rio is not killed off for a second time once she wakes up. Her being in a coma fundamentally doesn’t change her role at all as a person giving out “premonitions” whatsoever. It’s actually kind of insane. I’m not gonna go through everything just major moments. A lot and also very little goes on within episodes, I’ll just rely folk can fill in the blanks.

So for some mindfulness, from Abyss onwards, Rio is here.

SHARK VS. ABYSS and then some follow up:

Originally, this set of episodes involved Rio being possessed, and Shark fights Abyss and from there we learn about the Nasch and Merag stuff. Mostly the latter but for some reason focus is on Shark. Rio is then promptly put into a coma again and Shark wangst happens from here on out until the face-heel turn during the Astral World arc.

I’d probably make it start with… Idk. I feel like the original beginning of the episode works fine since it begins with visions being had by Rio. Blah blah, she’s confused, time to find another number. It’s in a weird spot in the middle of the ocean. For whatever reason, this area in the ocean feels really distressing for her. But, regardless, instead of a storm hitting and Rio suddenly going “missing”— as the crew tries deciphering the location, her “powers” take over and cursed by something unknown she jumps from the airship into the sea, followed by Shark who dives in after her (and yuma dives in after shark). Very dumb but the episode must start somehow. And this is likely played more seriously but I can’t help but laugh a bit at the thought.

Shark awakes in an undersea labyrinth, and somehow isn’t dead. Wtf? But hey! He found Rio nearby and she’s okay! The goal is finding the number tho, and her “powers” lead them to it. And uh oh here we go. A guardian is here to keep them from taking it. (As for Yuma, he and Astral’s sideplot about getting lost in the labyrinth is exactly the same, so dw about this)

The duel??? I said I wouldn’t change most, but this is a major exception. I’m making it Shark and Rio VS. Abyss. A two on one duel. We never once saw Rio and Shark play off each other in a duel setting when working together, and I feel like that was a prime missed opportunity. Especially for characters who just episodes prior, had this really weird one v. one duel. This needs something of a resolution. ALSO The memories here do involve both of them, so let both of them go ham.

However, since the memory flashbacks tend to tie into Merag a liiiittle more already (and the more major Nasch stuff will come later), Rio should be the first person to experience the Barian memories out of the two of them. We already got a bit of that with her visions at the start. As the duel progresses, Rio becomes more distressed by what she’s experiencing. During the duel Rio has lots of out of body experiences, on the one hand she’s present in the duel. On the other hand, she slips back into living life as Priestess Merag. But, for some reason, he doesn’t have a lot of control of herself?

But obviously, what Rio remembers is far worse since she pretty much relives her own death and can’t control her “mind.”

Meanwhile, Shark also goes through his vision onslaught, clearly thinking majority of this is some kind of manipulation tactic by Abyss. Episode more or less plays out the same minus damsel stuff. Durbe confronting Yuma and Astral still happens, Abyss being cryptic as hell still occurs and you know. Anyway, they win and get the number, and they all reappear on the deck of the airship knocked out. Everyone wakes up, it feels like a dream but they have the number?? So it couldn’t be?? Rio wakes up last though, which momentarily scares Shark.

TIME FOR REFLECTION!! Rio is fine, but clearly shaken. All those visions she saw… they meant something. Something inside her is telling her that. While Shark too is distraught and stressed by what he experienced during the duel… he doesn’t come to grips at all with it. He’s in more overt denial. In fact, he’s furious. Their lives weren’t lies?! How can she even THINK that? NONE of that was real! Also, wtf why the fuck did she jump into the ocean?! She could’ve died! Shark is emotionally overwhelmed both in potentially losing his sister again, and also the whole barian thing.

Rio isn’t on board either, but she’s always been the more “open” of the two. She’s not down for Shark’s behavior in the slightest, nor his seeming lack of empathy. Y’know? That more abrasive denial thing from Shark that feels a bit more in-line than just moping about a dead sister. Also, she literally relived dying so like. Fuck man that whole lack of empathy thing isn’t cool to her.

P.S Rio isn’t saying they’re Barians, but, maybe it’s her powers of “foresight” getting to her… something about what she saw feels too real to ignore, while the A plot goes on, she’s processing that very real possibility. This starts to cause something of a rift between otherwise close siblings.

Durbe proceeds to use this to his advantage.

[Next episodes: astral dies. Those episodes play out exactly the same except now Rio is part of the peanut gallery. The fearsome four stuff begins]

SHARK AND THOMAS VS. JELLYFISH MAN

Ok we know what happens in the original. Sort of. I’ll be honest? Haven’t seen these eps in a while. But, Shark goes to his old mansion to relive childhood memories, meanwhile coma Rio is poisoned by jelly man, and Shark also gets poisoned too. IV shows up dadada he’s sorry about the Rio thing but he never speaks to her. Things are gettin’ crazy. Something to that effect, I probably went out of order.

I think what I’d do is have Shark and Rio get into a fight about the barian stuff. Or something that really exemplifies the rift between that’s grown between them since Abyss. Either way, it leads to Shark leaving to the one place he feels he can really think — their old childhood home.

(Also Blah blah plot about strings of poisonings fucking people up is going on in the background that Yuma, Trey and Tori are focused on. Why not the numbers club?? Idk you tell me. Real zexal won’t allow that.)

Rio, in the meantime, after reflecting on what was said and done- goes to find Shark. And she knows exactly where he’d go. (Yuma, III, and Tori are present when she does this so they pursue her shortly thereafter. This is to replace the moments in the hospital)

P.S Durbe is watching all of this happen.

Shark reminisces at the mansion, and is promptly attacked by a monster and poisoned. IV shows up how he does originally and yadada duel starts.

Halfway through Rio and co. Find shark and IV dueling jellyfish man. Rio recognizes her bro is hurt, but Shark is not down for Rio or anybody else tagging in for any reason. There’s an interruptive conflict that’s super awkward for everyone involved (so maybe levity from jellyfish or IV can be put here) Yuma and co. show up at the tail end of this brief exchange.

And Rio, still riled up despite attempting to reach out, retreats into the mansion. The duel outside continues, but inside is where she encounters Durbe.

Ideally a moment would be had between Rio and Durbe similarly to a scene in a later episode with Shark and Durbe, but for the most part this will be small and not seen in full. But Durbe holds out Merag’s crest to Rio and he likely says some cryptic anime nonsense about “destiny” or something.

Because she’s been sensing “it” since the Abyss duel, and he firmly believes that she’s known the truth for a lot longer than she wants to admit.

We don’t see Rio again until the duel ends and she’s found inside the mansion. She seems, at “peace” for some reason? Something about her feels… different. Durbe is nowhere to be seen.

Insert moment here where IV and Rio actually, y’know. TALK. But things are kinda too late-ish now… cuz Rio has somebody else to deal with next.

[astral world arc begins]

Aight, while Yuma is off in Astral world dueling Eliphas and saving Astral, Durbe finally puts his final phase into motion to FINALLY convince Shark to accept who he actually is. Something he’s been fighting for a while now. And surprisingly, Rio is helping Durbe, much to Shark’s shock.

Shark at this point had been in his anguish full of regret for being pretty bitchy lately. All the fights, this barian stuff, the confusion, the fact it’s like he doesn’t even KNOW his sister anymore (and this Shark very likely doesn’t), it’s overwhelming as fuck and he’s tired.

Episode plays out normally with Durbe making Shark relive his life during his last encounter with Vector, the Iris thing, the men dying blah blah. That episode is kind of awesome to begin with, so borderline nothing changes here.

The the difference mostly being that the setup is a bit more concrete. Instead of Rio kinda just, being dead and a spirit “guide” to help Shark’s wangst and immediately following his face-heel turn with no insight on how she felt, we’ve been experiencing how she feels for a while and been seeing how it affects her and Shark’s relationship for a while.

It’s eventually mentioned that Durbe showed Rio these memories back at the mansion. Because showing somebody their twins terrible life after you died definitely isn’t horrifying!! Anyway, Rio came to accept the truth… because, like Durbe said before, she’s “always” known.

HOW? Because it turns out Rio’s powers of foresight she’s been experiencing throughout the series were her memories of being Merag trying really really hard to get out this whole time. That’s why she acts differently in those sudden moments. That’s how Rio knows these she couldn’t possibly know.

Rio being present as a “spirit” is there to help guide Shark through this experience, because he’s always been doing things alone for her. Time she returned the favor.

Everything plays out pretty much exactly the same, after all that anguish and reliving trauma where his army dies and Iris dies- Shark FINALLY accepts the truth about himself being Nasch. He and Rio switch sides together (because they weren’t going to do it alone).

Nasch and Merag take their spots in Barian World, and stuff proceeds to play out as normal. Sort of.

None of this is really all that great, but it’s a start? Again, I’m not a writer and a lot of this would realistically be overshadowed by the scheduled duels that play out, the A plot with Yuma, and generally be a lot more condensed due to the limited amount of episodes left. All this to say that there’s more ways than “dead sister” to make something happen. I dunno these are all minor shifts and my vocabulary is hyperbolic.

episode 8:

I once saw a fan recommend stop watching at episode 32 because they felt that the preres storyline was perfect and anything after was too confusing to be worth it. baffling to me. now I know the postres storyline was hard to follow but lets be fair. there is bullshit going on in both storylines (plus how could anyone want to skip the intimacy, the healing, the love, clearing his name, freedom, being an uncle, mentoring, coming full circle as an adult with support and a new life, and also the story conflict resolution??? like WHAT??)

anyway from what I can gather, the dancing goddess woke up 20 (TWENTY) years ago and attacked the wens, including young wq and wn (making them late and mid twenties in current arc which is obviously absurd), and wen ruohan subdued her, took her yin iron (is that how he discovered it?) and chained her up

present day wen chao, in order to attack lwj (and wwx), breaks the binding array and the chains and sets her on the community. wwx and lwj bind her again (in the next ep) and when postres storyline happens, wwx is surprised to see her unleashed again. nhs unleashed her? or pretended to? the thing that attacked them wasn’t really there?

I completely forgot about that scene when wen chao comes in to harass lxc. the implication that he either turns into the dire owl and flies away or is carried away by the dire ow is likely unintentional, but very intriguing nonetheless. like, wasn't he just in qishan?

seeing lxc visibly worried about lwj is such a wonderful scene. lwj’s connection to his family is one of the few things he cares about besides wwx so it’s always nice to remember, gives him some depth. and I’m very fond of lxc’s older-brother concern for him. like, he’s loved, you know? he’s loved.

anyway, cute character moments, but not as many as last episode. im so impatient for the indoctrination camp/sunshot/BM arcs they’re so so good and here we are watching wwx and lwj fight a statue. there’s not even any tender moments

jc mocking wwx for being unmasculine and liking rabbits would it kill him to be nice for once in his life why is he always such a dick. I know why but also ugh this is why people can’t stand you jc

then later sneaking out to help wwx....with that beautiful smile too. truly do think it adds to the story that jc smiles like that maybe four or five times but they look so gorgeous every time

wwx writing a smiley face on his “I ran away to night-hunt lol” note is so cute what the hell. he’s so cute this age. he asked the bunnies what they thought about lwj’s treatment of him. like hey bunnies, we’re friends, right? we’re friends? elder lan yi said so. we’ve been through battles together and now we have a quest together and he’s my match and unlike anyone i’ve ever met before and I just want to be with him etc. etc.

when wwx scared lwj with the mask it was actually a very clear case of the microexpression acting. I think people call a lot of lwj faces microexpressions when he’s literally not making any kind of expression at all but this one was definitely there, just subtle.

have I mentioned yet how little I like lwj’s teenage wig because it looks so bad. makes him look like an asshole. and teen lwj is kind of an asshole. anyway I think it looks bad

wwx is wearing hairpieces though! I don’t think he does that in any later arcs

stoic love interests are so hard to do well. the only other example of someone acting this well with so little expression of joy is colin firth’s darcy from bbc pride and prejudice. I know for a fact the man didn’t smile the entire miniseries, until the very final shot when they were driving away in the wedding carriage together. it’s not easy, but he pulled it off! like lwj, a ton of his acting is in the eyes and in his body language and gestures, as well as character development through action. cool stuff.

the technique that wwx uses to save lwj in the cave is his binding/bonding thing he invented that he was talking about right?

god these fight scenes are not what I’m here for can we skip to the soulful stares. I’ve been living in postcanon too much in my head, I just want to be there already. but it’s a journey. it’s a journey

Flynn Marathons Doctor Who, Part 16

(I got way behind on posting these writeups at the end of S6, so I’ll be finishing these up and posting them every couple days over the next two weeks. I’m currently on S12 so I have a lot of writing to catch up on)

Finishing up Season 6 and the Troughton era:

The Seeds of Death: Resolutely ok, but honestly really rough to sit through. More than any other story this is the one that feels padded at six episodes, because it’s not as if there are obvious extraneous bits as much as it is everything seems to take forever to happen.

Which is really odd because the first episode takes no time at all to set everything up and get us in on the action--heck, the Ice Warriors attack well before the Doctor even arrives, where in other stories that attack might not take until the second episode. But once you’re passed that, the story does this weird stop-and-start thing where it’ll take ages to do one simple task and then breeze right through the next few. And it’s super engaging and enjoyable in the latter, and really goddamn rough in the former.

Another issue is how threadbare the human elements are--the characters are all nice and well-thought-out, but the conflict boils down to more of the same that was in “The Ice Warriors”, but instead of developing interestingly as the story progresses it just starts at one place and stays there. Eldred and Radnor basically make up at the start of episode 2 and spend the rest of the story as colorful plot devices, and while Fewsham’s arc is nice it doesn’t really carry the story as well as it should.

Which leaves us with the basic plot, which is just...I mean, the story really doesn’t seem to be about much of anything, it’s just Ice Warriors invading earth--and sure, it looks cool and the bits where the Warriors are on earth are really well-shot, but it’s ultimately just “Web of Fear” but with Martians instead of Yeti and a touch of “Fury from the Deep” thrown in.

Like, the story honestly isn’t bad. But the pacing issues and lack of any real depth keep it from being that much of a big deal in the end.

The Space Pirates: So, uh....why do people hate this one?

Like, I can see reasons for disliking it, sure--the first episode is a trainwreck, and much of the story’s enjoyment depends on how much you like Milo Clancey (and I actually do, but totally understand why people wouldn’t), but...bottom 10 all time bad? Second-worst Troughton story? Not by a mile.

Honestly, I thought the episode was pretty good--definitely the “Reign of Terror” for Robert Holmes, in that it’s a first (second) go for a writer that would get much more polished, but Holmes is a far better writer than Spooner was, and you see a lot of his strengths here, with well-textured characters, some interesting twists and turns, and a more grounded story interested in bureaucracy and its effects on people.

I think it’s clever how the story plays with the identity of the Space Pirate leader--you go a solid couple episodes thinking it’s Clancey, and once they give you a scene that clearly indicates Madeleine is behind the scene Holmes introduces Caven, throwing us off-guard for when it’s revealed at the end of the episode that Madaleine and Caven are working together. The story is also good about throwing us new things each episode--particularly in Ep. 5 when the thread of Madaleine’s father comes into place--as well as playing with character motivations and loyalties, with Madaleine turning on Caven and Dervish being conflicted in following him.

Honestly, this was pretty damn good. Probably the biggest shock of this watchthrough was finding this eminently more watchable than “Seeds of Death”, reconstructions and all, instead of being the interminably boring trainwreck people hyped it up. This wins my vote for most underrated Troughton, hands-down.

The War Games: Uh.

Holy shit.

No, really, holy shit. Remember when I said “Mind Robber” was my favorite Troughton and favorite Doctor Who story outright? Yeah, no, I take it back, it’s this. This is just an absolutely astounding story--ten episodes of basically non-stop rising action and topping it off with a finale that by now has overshadowed the serial entirely but must’ve been mindblowing for the few that watched it when it aired.

I kinda can’t get over how good this story is. A ten-episode serial about war is not inherently a recipe for success but so much about this works. I suspect a lot of it is you get the inherent strengths of Malcolm Hulke and Terrance Dicks working together--from Hulke you get well-developed and nuanced characters, a fleshed-out world and very little wasted time, from Dicks you get wonderful pacing, effortless and functional plotting--just the both of them working together turns out to be the best possible scenario for a script.

One of the things that really helps the story is how well-drawn every character is, even the minor ones, and how the story will come back to them in later stretches to lend the whole thing a great sense of unity. And in addition to the characters, the overall story is so good at constantly giving you new ideas and new complications so you never feel the length of 10 episodes. First you think it’s World War I, then you think aliens are manipulating the war, then you find out there’s multiple wars, and that there’s a society of aliens taking control of them, and by the time they introduce the resistance you’re just giddy with the imagination of the storytelling. And that’s not even touching the parts everyone talks about--the brilliance of the Time Lord reveal, the fantastic performances and direction, how brutal but fitting Jamie and Zoe’s goodbyes are, how on fire Troughton is in his last regular performance in the role...just, top to bottom this is a barnstormer of a story.

A big part of what makes the story so special for me is I watched this with a very close friend who had seen a lot of clips of classic Who but not a full serial. I had started this episode and just went “Ok, we have to watch this episode, it’s so good”. We absolutely did not intend to watch the entire thing in one go...but we did, and the first episode of “Spearhead” immediately afterwards to boot. It’s just so captivating a story, and I will always have fond memories of watching the story in a dark room, our faces illuminated only by the light of the TV, and every now and then looking over to her to see her grinning broadly and whispering “this is so cool”.

It really fucking is. My favorite Doctor Who story by a mile.

one of the chimeras betrays Scar's group and brings in Envy. I was hoping he'd be relevant again!! turns out it was a trap and the chimera isn't actually evil again.

so envy uses the philosopher's stone to power his shapeshifting?? sure looks like it.

apparently marcoh has been mixing alkahestry into his work and it's awesome. the ice sculpture in a middle finger is a nice touch.

oh, no, may's hiding out doing action at a distance and envy has no clue. GO TEAM.

okay, marcoh denatures envy down to a little bug form which is simultaneously cute and disturbing. Yoki messes with it at his peril. I love how envy accidentally takes the wrong hostage if he wants people to care about his victim's fate.  

Scar is inspired by Miles to change Amestris from the inside instead of just killing people, so... that's good, I guess?

scar gives may envy in a jar and tells her go home, which seems LIKE SUCH A BAD IDEA ON SO MANY LEVELS

(like, I get that they did this so May could save her clan--which clearly hit of Scar's buttons--does no one even bother to think this through...?)

Anyway, I predict this will not end well.

Meanwhile, one of Greed's chimera buddies, Bido, survived, and learns that the military is searching for Izumi and Sig, but they're on the lam. He follows them back to base when he realizes they're from Bradley; he wants revenge for Wrath killing his boss.

(also, the fact that the original!Greed was like, "fuck u, I make my own rules" and ran away from Father's schemes with his misfit friends just warms my heart.)

There are only three rules for state alchemists: "don't interfere with the military,""don't make people," and "don't make gold",LOL.

It's so funny to me that the gold thing is included, even though I don't understand how you can MAKE gold with alchemy if gold is a single independent element and you are bound by the laws of equivalent exchange. but whatever, it's still really freakin' funny to me that they don't want State Alchemists fucking up the economy with their magic chemistry powers.

anyway, turns out they don't also want people growing their own armies in the basement - that's what THEY'RE DOING. quoth olivier: fuck.

apparently, Father has to wait for the stars/planets/sun to align in order to do his Evil Alchemy - it's referred to as "the Promised Day" and I'm having flashbacks to the "Day of Black Sun" from Avatar: The Last Airbender (though I think it's supposed to be more like Sozin's comet?).

TIME SKIP! It's spring in Resembool for the sheep festival. Winry is smuggled home and finds Ed in her bedroom - right as she's about to undress. Hijinks ensue.

anyway, Ed and Greed are hanging with Pinako. Ed gets his automail serviced and Winry ups the stakes by refusing to run away in case things go wrong.

she is specifically ordered to stay at home and bake a pie while the men go out to battle, sigh.

meanwhile, greed approves of winry's desire to "have it all" (i.e, victory against Father AND Ed and Al getting their bodies back on the Promised Day) and Ed is Not Amused.

Let’s Talk About JSHK Anime #2

Warning: Manga spoilers up until Tanabata Arc (basically that + the entirety of season 1 + the skipped arcs)

I’m gonna talk about how the anime keeps proving my predictions wrong with skipped arcs, and later right, with consequences. Due note that this isn’t me hating the anime (because I love it). Just my funny experience attempting to Sherlock my way through the anime, plus my thoughts on The Little Mermaid being the finale.

No deduction works when it comes to predicting this series.

It all started when episode 5, The Confession Tree, came out. I was looking forward to it ‘cause I’m hananene trash af. Legit thought the entire episode was gonna be about Kodama.

But then the episode preview pics came out and I was like, “Sakura wtf are you doing here you don’t show up again until three chapters later?”

My first prediction was ep 5 would be entirely Kodama, and then ep 6 would be Young Exorcist. Seeing that these arcs serve to build up Nene and Kou wanting to know more about Hanako, I thought it’d be nice that we set aside two episodes just for that.

But then Kodama finished somewhere around the fifteenth minute mark, and we started Young Exorcist Part 1. Which was, you know, fine. But then instead of continuing, they jumped right to the end of the arc when Nene met Sakura for the first time, and then kept going to No. 5′s rumor and revealed Tsukasa early. Next episode’s title preview confirmed it, too. Ep 6 was gonna be 4PM Bookstacks.

Okay. I still had hope. Maybe they just rearranged the order.

On the other hand, the lack of ‘Part 1′ in the title was alarming. And it came true. They packed four chapters into one episode. A lot of things got cut. There wasn’t enough room for the op, and they had to run the credits while the episode was still ongoing. Though, tbh, other than Tsuchi’s line about him being able to change the books (with dire consequences), I didn’t have much problem with the cut scenes.

Then this thing showed up.

Before ep 5 I didn’t think we’d get Donuts until around episode 9-ish. But nope the No. 7s would meet each other in ep 7 (lmao see what I did there?). Again, I was fine with it, but I was a bit upset about Young Exorcist.

Someone said it may be moved to the finale, and I didn’t like that idea. Mostly because Yashiro, our main audience POV, isn’t in the arc. And it just sounds weird having a finale without your main audience POV.

They could put her there, sure, but that would mean adjusting Nene and Teru’s every future interaction. Even without shipping goggles or Nene’s romance-colored glasses, do you think Nene would still act the same towards Teru if she saw him hurt Hanako like that? ‘Cause that was brutal. Like she wouldn’t run and protect him like she did when they met Kou.

They put Kou and Teru’s resolution from Young Exorcist into their convo in episode 7. This kinda makes Teru a bit useless, though. I mean, he still doesn’t do much in the manga but the tension between him and Kou was supposed to set up this badass fight. Since it didn’t happen, and Young Exorcist isn’t gonna be the finale either, then he’s pretty much useless.

Anyway, the thing about Teru being onto The Broadcasting Club?

I’m not sure if Manga!Teru is really onto them. As far as I remember, it wasn’t hinted anywhere in the manga. Do correct me if I’m wrong. So what was the point of that change?

I didn’t get pissed until halfway through episode 7 and suddenly Mitsuba was there, but no fishes.

“What is he doing here, where’s that puffer fish, where’s his murder? Hello?”

I was very neutral about Mitsuba from the very beginning but when he showed up where The Little Mermaid (and my fish murder!!!) was supposed to be I kinda began to grow undeserved resentment toward him (I’m cool now though!). Totally, totally undeserved, because it wasn’t his character’s fault.

I was happy because Mitsuba stans got to see him animated (he was cute, and his VA was so good). But putting him in episode 7??? I mean they just left Hanako and Nene’s tension unresolved like that. That makes the episode really choppy in my opinion. They could’ve had the coolest final shot of the season of Tsukasa murdering that fish to scare and excite the anime-onlys. They missed that chance.

We got to episode 8. Pretty solid. Still would’ve preferred if its first bits weren’t in Donuts, but solid.

Preview title basically confirmed they’re skipping The Little Mermaid too. That was when I lost hope in Young Exorcist. But I tried to compromise. If they weren’t animating The Little Mermaid, then they have to put Hanako and Nene’s conversation and pinky promise in The Little Mermaid at the end of ep 9.

Episode 9 turned out to be my favorite. It was all thanks to Natsuhiko. He really cheered me up over our loss of two arcs. And my prediction was right for once. Hanako apologized for ruining the donuts. That’s definitely not the point of their tension (Tsu-ka-sa and trust), but it was still nice and I’d take what I could get. The hug. The hug was very nice.

I was mostly content, excited to see my boi Akane the next week. But then I thought, wait, we only have three episodes left. And we’re definitely reaching Hell of Mirrors, ‘cause No. 3′s silhouette is in the OP. Then the horrifying thought hit me.

They were gonna skip Searching.

But! The freaking post-credit showed up followed by this:

“They skipped Searching AND Clock Keeper??? Why on earth would you highlight Akane, with Teru of all people, in the OP then?! Paralleling Mitsuba and Kou no less!”

Due notice, yet again, the lack of ‘Part 1′ in the title preview. Before the episode actually aired, this was my train of thought: “Okay so they skipped The Clock Keeper and Searching, and decided to outdo episode 6 by packing 6 chapters (yeah, I counted “Reach Out Your Hand”) into one episode. Ahahaha ... what?”

Thankfully, they proved me wrong. Kay. Good. Thanks a bunch for fooling me with that title preview.

But then it freaking hit me. You got one episode left. The finale. Sure, Clock Keeper as a finale will be perfect. It’s a good hook for season 2. However. You can’t do Clock Keeper without doing Searching. It’d basically be almost the same as doing Donuts without doing The Little Mermaid. The finale wouldn’t feel resolved this way, because, again, there’s tension between Hanako and Nene (and Kou too) that isn’t resolved yet.

Not that Searching addressed the cause of the tension, but at least it brought the trio back to their status quo (well, with a bit of kounene and hananene development haha). Also, without Searching, it’ll only end like this:

Clock Keeper itself is 5 chapters. They can cut and modify. Sure. But y’all saw ep 6.

So that’s why I was sure we’re definitely not getting No. 1 this season. To me, that leaves three options for the finale.

A. Delivery + Tanabata Arc

Best pick in my opinion

It’s the direct continuation to Hell of Mirrors

The main trio are all there, especially our audience POV

More glimpses of Amane is always a plus point

The ‘getting hit by a bull, waking up in the past, and seeing your boyfriend before he died’ is just so random I think it’d be a pleasant surprise for the anime-onlys

Just wholesome in general, leaves the audience feeling good

The-ma-tic!!! You begin the series with Nene’s wish and end it with Amane’s isn’t that just asdfghjkl wish wish wish, everything’s about wishes in JSHK

B. Young Exorcist

Classic boss battle finale

Just Teru’s badassery *chef’s kiss*

Hanako getting emotional (something we haven’t really seen before)

Getting deeper into Hanako’s motive (episode 8 would’ve been more impactful had we had Young Exorcist before it, what with his view of disappearing/exorcism for ghosts being salvation)

Kou’s character development

^ counter argument: he already got the character development he went through in Young Exorcist in episode 6 and 7, plus, he and Teru already resolved their disagreements - though, not as impactful as in the manga

Also wholesome, HanaKou is great I love their friendship so much *sobs*

C. The Little Mermaid

Aaaaannnnddddd the verdict was:

Mmmmmkay.

I did previously think we’re gonna end the season with The Little Mermaid. But here’s the thing. It only works if everything is in chronological order.

Why? Because the tension that led to this arc in the first place is resolved already in episode 9.

The whole point of TLM is that conversation at the end, really, where:

Hanako apologizes for ruining the donuts (he already did in episode 9)

Hanako thanks Yashiro for telling him that she liked him

Hanako admits that he had a little brother and that he killed him (Tsukasa already confirmed both of this for Nene, both in episode 7 and episode 9)

So having Hanako repeating all this seems kinda redundant. Nene already knows. Sure, it’ll be nice to hear it from him directly ... but it’s too late now, isn’t it? It’s been four episodes. She’s met Tsukasa three times now. However, point number 2 is still available.

Furthermore, since Hanako already apologized in episode 9, I’m not sure if the fishes can use what happened in episode 7 to persuade Nene to leave him. I mean, she forgave him already. Tension resolved. They hugged and all. And it’s been so long since then.

Animating the fish murder scene is also kinda useless. It was supposed to give the audience a glimpse of how dangerous Tsukasa is. But we already know that. We saw him rip someone’s heart out and force-feed it to someone else.

The first half of The Little Mermaid Part 1 and The Broadcasting Club at the end of Part 2 are already animated in episode 7. That leaves them even more room for extra scenes. I hope they take good advantage of that.

Basically, they have to make a lot of adjustments and I’m curious to see what they’re gonna do.

I am happy that we’re gonna see The Little Mermaid. The way Hanako wipes Nene’s face with his sleeve, and then cradles her head? I need it, they make my heart melt. Can’t wait.

Ray and Allison have a lovely relationship but I finally identified the problem, the tension I was feeling between since them a few eps back. It's not about Allison's secrets at all, is about Ray being so obsessed with his crusade that he completely overlooks Allison's feelings, he only pays attention to her when they are on the page about the mission. He sees her powers and his first thought is 'we could use this for the cause', Allison is clearly distressed and sad and even says she doesn't feel well and all he can think about is the damn JFK meeting. He's not a bad person and he's not doing it on purpose but he has a workaholic one-track mind that could easy turn into neglect for Allison. He clearly loves her and I'm rooting for them so much but I know that if asked to choose between Allison and his cause, he'll pick his cause.

So Five is done with the killing. I figured this might weigh on his conscience, it's one thing to kill for a greater good or survival, coldly and detached, it's another thing to slaughter for selfish reasons (even if his selfish reasons are a greater good).

But let's see where this goes, I'm getting ahead of myself.

anyways but yeah just writing out thoughts here and i’m like, well this episode all could’ve been worse lmao, and it’s just a little perplexing why this is The Third Episode In Which Winston Has A Crush and there just hasn’t been any resolution one way or another? like, what is the plan for this. rian kind of going out of her way to imply he’s wholly unappealing sure means that even if he’s clearly sweeter on her than ever that’s sort of......cancelled out by her first saying something about him Would be hot if it wasn’t him, and then by telling him she knows he likes her but just.....changing the subject lol..........like, why wasn’t he just smacked completely down in this episode. it wasn’t encouraging, i’m moving a step towards “well i guess it’s slightly more likely it’s meant to be Eternally Unrequited rather than a total coin toss” but i still don’t feel like it really tipped the scales either way and i wish it would’ve lmao like. if i *did* really think this was nailing the coffin shut i’d embrace that, would rather be bitter about it but have closure going into an indefinite hiatus than not. but this is still weirdly up in the air and yet they’re clearly like “this is a thing!!! winston having a crush on the rian is a thing!!! for these past three episodes” and that’s a long time in terms of Billions Arcs for us to Essentially be in the same place as the end of 5x05. if winston’s feelings aren’t returned and aren’t going to be at any point, why does his crush still matter? why not just let it be like, winston expresses his crush more clearly, rian more clearly lets him know it’s never gonna happen? if they Are gonna kiss or something, why is rian being quite as negative there lmao and why is it getting such a slowburn. it’s definitely a case where Winston’s Feelings Matter and don’t seem to be a total joke, which i appreciate, but i’d also appreciate some resolution here, is the tl;dr i suppose lmao

thoughts on ep 32-34, spoilers under the cut

- the trouble I’m having with this drama is that barely 24 hrs after watching an episode, I find I’ve forgotten large parts of it- and that’s  because entire stretches of it are devoted to the minutiae of governance in a particular period of history, which, while probably being interesting if you have an interest in that specific subject, for someone like me, it has like,  ZERO emotional resonance. And I don’t think something needs to be either intellectually fulfilling OR emotionally compelling; there are plenty of shows that do both- just not this one. 

-anyways, moving on: I still love Huirou A LOT, and these three episodes were really rough on that character! For reasons that are political (both in the governance sense and personal), Danshu takes a decision that Huirou cannot study in the Palace Academy anymore. While I totally understand the logic behind her reasoning (i.e. both the emotional and rational logic), is still fucking HURTS to watch a young girl being denied the opportunity to learn just because her sex (and social position) has put her in a box. She’s just seven, and the lid on the box is already closing. Ugh, super super painful. 

- Guanjia continues to be an ass, his Mommy Issues(TM) with Danshu even more clearly articulated- and at this point, I’m not even angry, I’m just like, god, just shut up and die already. The one good thing that happened related to Huirou’s story in these episodes is that Danshu, for once, stands up for herself in an argument with Emperor Fucklord. She literally gets up in his face, and I tell you, that was an EXCELLENT moment, something I’ve been waiting for, for what feels like EVER, in this show. She’s very shaken by the confrontation though, but I have some doubt that the show will actually address it any further. Like i feel we’re condemned to see them go through this cycle of relative friendliness- cold war/fighting for the REST OF THIS GODDAMN SHOW without any resolution!!! The constant time skips they do- sometimes years, not even months- mean that all these fights and confrontations just begin to look like a series of stand-alone incidents with no single incident given a proper resolution, though perhaps in the longer arc they *will * have to end it one way or another- either Danshu and the Emperor are fully together as husband-and-wife, or they continue orbit in their own separate, and occasionally intersecting paths, but without the current angst attached to it. 

- Jia and Xia Song were an unexpected gift in this section of episodes. Both actors BRING IT to some of the most tender and layered scenes in the series so far. I found myself rooting for their Evil Schemes just because, god, I’m INVESTED in them getting to spend the rest of their lives together. 

- Zhang Bihan is finally using whatever little brains she has, and honestly, I’m sorry for her losses and anxiety as a mother. On the other hand, she *is * a wilful brat and Emperor Fucklord’s continued indulgence of her at the expense of everyone else, including Huirou, is infuriating. Imagine, at some point, he basically tells Huirou, a child of seven, that she should show more empathy for Zhang Bihan, who’s had a fairly sad life, and manage her emotions because Bihan, who lost a child when “still half a child herself at 16″, and is now maybe 18/19 and is still...a child????  Yeah fucklord? then maybe you shouldn’t keep getting her pregnant!! And just maybe, a seven year old is MORE of a child than an 18 year old, so just shut the fuck up with that line of reasoning. Like there’s an entire ten minutes of ep 34 where Fucklord is pontificating to Huirou about how he puts himself in someone else’s shoes, and I’m just sitting there, absolutely gobsmacked at the hypocrisy being displayed, because Fucklord sure as heck doesn’t extend that empathy to his wife or even his child. The worst part of it was the feeling that you’re supposed to be watching this scene and going “aww, what a nice guy”. Yeah, what a Nice Guy(TM). 

-The more this show revolves around the least likeable character in it, the less inclined I am to stick with it. I’m just going to keep ffwding to the scenes of the characters I like or care about. (which is everyone but him)

- Speaking of: Dong Qiuhe is LOVELY! She��s smart, and competent, and kind, and cares about her work, and I think there’s this truly lovely relationship developing between her and Danshu, where Danshu sort of takes her under her wing, that I’m SO invested in! Please show, just give me more of two very smart and competent women supporting each other and being friends and allies and don’t screw it up with some Emperor Fucklord related nonsense!

- And lastly, Maoze! So little screen time with him, but what little we got was Maoze being quietly Scheming (TM) and dude, that is super HOT. I cannot wait for more of it. But I feel like I’m going to have to wait another 15 episodes or something for Danshu and Maoze to share the screen again, and that is AWFUL.

Winter 2020 Power Rankings

Time to catch up on writing some good old Power Rankings.

1. Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na!: It's hard not to fall for Eizouken's infectious love for all aspects of the art of animation. They even pay respect to the people who make sound effects. I respect Yuasa, but most of his works don't really appeal to me--but Eizouken can be appreciated by anyone who's ever loved a piece of animation. ★★★★☆

2. Oshi ga Budoukan Ittekuretara Shinu: The first law of idol anime is they're always better than you think they will be. I had high hopes for Oshibudo and it still managed to exceed them. Idols and yuri are not an uncommon combination (even if it's usually just subtext) but Oshibudo manages to mix lesbian themes with the purest and most genuine depiction of idol fandom possible to make a truly delicious gay idol smoothie. ★★★★☆

3. 22/7: Speaking of idol anime always overperforming... I thought this would be a 'so bad it's good' show based on its first episode but instead it's just so good its good. A compellingly weird frame story that plays with criticism of idols just enough to be interesting props up an impeccably well done anthology series about several girls and their disparate paths to the idol industry. Some of the eps are magical, some are relative duds, but the sum of it all is an incredibly endearing series. ★★★☆☆

4. SHOW BY ROCK!! Mashumairesshu!!: Speaking of gay idols... The original Show By Rock was an okay series with yuri subtext that I mostly liked because Ayaneru was in it, but this spinoff trims all the fat from that series and delivers pure gay band girls and it's brilliant. No weird sci-fi drama, no laser fights between CGI gerbils, just some extremely gay girls starting a band. ★★★☆☆

5. Itai no wa Iya nanode Bougyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu.: At the risk of sounding like a broken record, Oonuma Shin always fucking delivers. Boufuri comes off as a boring MMORPG anime at first, but as a truly admirable "commitment to the bit" sees our protagonist Maple grow to literally God-like strength, it starts to worm its way into your heart. There's some great moments like Maple turning into a mech or a fluffball or fucking around and breaking sidequests, but for the most part it's just an extremely competent anime made by, still, the most underrated director in the business. ★★★☆☆

6. Koisuru Asteroid: It's a shame for a Kirara anime to ever be described with the term "disappointing" but Asteroid just doesn't deliver enough astronomy or geology and has way too much melodrama. The girls are still cute as fuck and it definitely hits most of the good Kirara anime notes, but it's decidedly a second-tier Kirara series. Also I'm still mad at them for ruining Suzu's hair. ★★★☆☆

7. Rikei ga Koi ni Ochita no de Shoumei Shite Mita: This is definitely a funny premise, but it's also one of those comedy shows where they really only have one joke that they do over and over. Still, it's hard not to enjoy Amamiya Sora as a cool and standoffish science babe, and by the time the gag is getting old the show wraps up with a surprisingly strong resolution to the romantic tension in the series. ★★★☆☆

8. ID:INVADED: This is the kind of show I almost never actually watch, but every so often I stumble upon one of these male-led action-thrillers that really manages to tickle my fancy. ID takes a compelling premise--it's like Minority Report except the detectives have to solve weird metafictional puzzles in scenarios derived from the psyches of the killers--and spins it out into an enjoyable science fiction action-adventure romp. As a piece of sf it doesn't say much more than "me am play gods," but it manages to be genuinely cool in premise and execution and also has a cute loli BBA. ★★★☆☆

9. Kuutei Dragons: CG anime conspiracy continues with this well made adventure story about whaling but it's in the sky. Unfortunately its addressing of the ethics of whaling is too wishy-washy to be interesting and it has some weird tonal stuff like setting up a "dude saves girl from prostitution" plot arc and then just not doing it so we just have to assume she like... goes back to whoring herself I guess? But this is never even addressed? It's weird, but the show has some pretty beautiful visuals for a CGI show and the ending arc is pretty satisfying. It queerbaited me with that Za-san character though. ★★★☆☆

10. Magia Record Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica Gaiden: Madoka is probably in my top ten anime of all time, so just the existence of a shitty cash-in mobile game based on it pains me, much less seeing the entire franchise pivoting to selling it instead of more actual Madoka. Magia Record is bad in multiple dimensions; not only is it a poor imitation of the original masterpiece in both style and tone, the writing takes some truly disastrous turns with respect to the original series's canon. But I'mma be real with you... Yachiyo is the hottest anime girl of the year and she's hard gay for Iroha. So two stars. ★★☆☆☆

11. Murenase! Seton Gakuen: It feels like there's A LOT of "animal people" shows lately... This is another one. The girls in this are enjoyable thanks to great character designs from Sasaki Masakatsu who always manages to impart a very understated but tangible lewdness to all his characters. ★★☆☆☆

12. Kyokou Suiri: I really like 'talking anime' and I really loved listening to Kitou Akari talk for almost the entire runtime of this whole series. She's definitely a real one. It was also nice to see a romance with a cute disabled character whose disability is only really there in the background. Kotoko was just cute as fuck with an impeccable fashion sense. The story is kind of meh, especially once it gets into the meat of the Koujin Nanase arc, but it's worth it just to see Kotoko and Kurou's cute interactions. ★★☆☆☆

13. Nekopara: I wish Nekopara was better, and lewder, especially given that the franchise literally has its origins in porn doujinshi, but it still has lots of cute cat girls. Even if they do live in Saudi Catrabia. Maple is best cat. ★★☆☆☆

14. Ishuzoku Reviewers: The fact that this show became such a sensation is truly a testament to the power of anime tiddies. Unfortunately the character designs in this show do very little for me even when the characters are ones that aren't objectionably weird (which is infrequent) which is pretty much a fatal flaw for an anime that's supposed to be all about getting horny and nutting. Too thicc for me, man. I admire its gumption but in the end I didn't actually enjoy the show that much. I did learn the Japanese word for "cloaca" though. ★☆☆☆☆

Carisi-centric thoughts on Ep 19x04

(A little rushed, not to mention late, because this week really got away from me due to a very persistent flu.)

(and my even more persistent need to write fic.)

Overall Thoughts

Eh. A plot we have seen before, a type of “nice guy” perp we have seen before, a case that had pretty much zero twists (the perp was immediately obvious), a tepid resolution. To me, this was the weakest episode of the season.

On the bright side, though, there

wasn’t a huge amount of victim blaming, and we got some wonderful Amanda scenes, and also some intimate Rolivia scenes (I ship it btw! I’m getting S17 Barisi vibes from them this year. I can already tell that S19 will be the Holy Grail for Rolivia shippers, just like S17 was for Barisi shippers. And I’m loving every minute of it.). Also, the ending did have a sappy PSA vibe, but the anti-bullying message was important, and timely, so I didn’t mind it that much.

Overall, this was a somewhat uneventful episode which I moderately enjoyed but won’t be rewatching.

Sonny and Continuity

Sonny has come so far. He’s been doing this a long time! 3 whole years I mean, a really long time, and he doesn’t ask questions he doesn’t already know the answers to :D Which, by the way, is a lawyer thing, not a cop thing. (and a To Kill a Mockingbird thing, of course). I don’t know if that was a subtle nod to Sonny’s lawyer side, or just a cool way to show that he’s a confident detective now, but I loved it all the same.

Just like I love this Sonny upgrade we’ve been getting. We (and Sonny) were long overdue. Season 16 was the “he’s got potential but he still needs training wheels” period, Season 17 was the “he’s learned a lot but he’s still rough around the ages” period, Season 18 never happened and Season 19 is the “Sonny Carisi, experienced SVU detective and licensed attorney, at your service” period.

The truth is, Sonny has been doing this a long time. Three years at SVU is no joke. Anyone would learn a lot, let alone someone like Sonny, who’s always been so eager to educate himself. I love how we’re allowed to see that confidence, this year. That’s Sonny’s main trait, now. He swaggers into Liv’s office and explains complex jurisprudence, he sasses Barba, he interrogates witnesses or perps with the gravitas of a cop who knows what he’s doing.

This development has been earned. Sonny has gone through a lot of shifts as a character, but finally we’re seeing it all pay off. Finally, the subtle shifts in his attitude are consistent with his character arc; he’s gained experience as a cop, he’s got his law license, he’s older, and he’s seen things, and he’s finally moving forward as a character. He’s where he’s supposed to be.

And the best thing is that his core personality hasn’t been sacrificed. He’s still funny, just not in a (totally) goofy way. He’s still empathetic, just not in a naïve way. He’s still whip smart, just not in a way that’s meant to surprise us. We know who he is now, and he knows who he is, and it’s great to watch.  

I suspect it will be just as great to watch him mess up, too. Somehow. Or get compromised. Over-invested. We’re all human. I’d like to see that. Maybe we will.

When Fin is not in an episode, it becomes almost hilariously obvious how short-staffed the 16th is. There are literally 2 detectives, Amanda and Sonny and Fin who is a Sergeant except not really so I don’t even know if he counts. I like that they’re bringing in another ADA (provided it allows for more Barba drama) but why not also bring in a new detective? The cast is small enough for 2 new additions. I’m not talking Season 9 levels of “we can’t fit our 18 regulars in the same frame,” I’m talking about one more cop. The show needs it.

My guy! The defense attorney! He’s my favorite. I love that the show keeps having him back.

"On that hilariously unrelated note, Noah's grandmother showed up!" Man, why do I even bother coming up with organic segues when I write fic?

I couldn’t believe my ears when Amanda mentioned an actual case from her past, but it wasn’t that random thing SVU does, where detectives reference “old cases” which were solved offscreen (like in the premiere). We had actually seen Amanda’s old case! Pink clouding! I applaud the writers for actually giving a damn about continuity this season. It really makes a difference.

Sonny and Continuity Vol. 2: I loved that we saw, yet again, how sensitive Sonny is when it comes to younger victims. The way Peter conveyed Sonny’s disgust when talking about the incident, even before they knew a rape had occurred, it was so beautifully consistent with Sonny’s reactions in previous seasons. Again, continuity really makes a difference.

CanvasWatches: Death Parade

An anime about death, set in a food-service purgatory where people must play games to be judged and have their ultimate fates decided, with an inappropriately upbeat OP, and a good balance of distinctive characters and intriguing world building?

This is the most on-brand thing for me, it’s literally just missing a couple pairs of glasses and a dog.

I was turned towards the series after hearing it be described on (I think) Desert Bus, and I thought ‘Okay, I’ll add it to the queue’. Then, when trying to decide on what to follow Samurai Champloo, I chose to give this intriguing show a go as my bedtime anime.

I watched the first episode, and thought ‘Eh, I have time for another episode.’ And watched three more episodes.

The next day, I binged through the remaining eight episodes. I so very rarely binge through a series that hard. It’s usually one or two episodes a day, dragged out if I’m watching it with my brother and our schedules aren’t aligning. I don’t typically have the attention to just burst binge.

Death Parade was balanced just right to really grab me.

Now, I must write about it. As is my duty. (Spoilers ahead!)

Okay, let me temper my previous excitement a little bit, because the episodes were arranged in a manner to trigger a skinner box reaction in me. The episodes mostly alternate between one about judging guests (which I loved) and an episode about the world and myth arc, which I was less enthralled with. So I saw the first episode, which established the structure of Two Dead Guys arrive, get manipulated into a classic game ramped up to craziness, and we learn about their lives so we (and Decim) may judge them. That was pretty cool, and I wanted to go another round.

So I went onto the second episode, which flipped the perspective of the first episode to introduce Decim’s new assistant and teach about the world. Which is fine, but I still wanted to see another game! So obviously, I had to move on to episode three, which satisfied that desire and was really cute, and I wanted to see if the games would continue. Which, fortunately, episode 4 delivered on, so I got a nice trio before laying my head down for sleep.

But, as the series continued, the problem remained: I was really into the episodes that focused on the series gimmick, but when it tried to focus on the overarching arc, I became unengaged. Because while the moral question of judging the deceased and what contexts should and shouldn’t be used were interesting, the effort to keep the higher levels and specifics of the organization vague meant I had no context to Oculus or what Nona’s trying to accomplish. I didn’t see enough about the extended cast to care about what they’re trying to do.

What I had hoped to see is more of what they did with Ginti, taking episodes to show how the other Arbitrators perform their duty. Compare and contrast the styles of them to help highlight to inherent problems with the system, and maybe highlight how Oculus is outwardly affable, but deeply sinister under the mask.

If there’s something I wish caught on more in anime, it’s Princess Tutu’s plot structure.

That’s right! Let’s take a detour through ballet time!

One thing that all media (including film franchises and other animated works) needs to learn from Princess Tutu is putting in the ground work.

You know when Princess Tutu gets to its actual premise? Season 2. The first season was entirely a formulaic Magical Girl show, a format series creator Ikuko Itoh learned from her time working for Sailor Moon. The entire first season exists to lure the audience into a complacency and educate them about what a Magical Girl anime is, with a few hints to a larger meta-arc. The end of the first half resolves the collectathon of the series, and would’ve made a passable series on it’s own.

Then the character who’s been acting as a sort of narrator steps up with a chuckle and basically tells the audience ‘Wasn’t that quaint? Well, hold on, because we’re going wild now.’ There are a couple episodes of the second season that seems to be just more of the same Magical Girl trope work, but then the central cast shift roles and the subversions and meta blooms.

And that’s not emotionally possible without spending thirteen episodes establishing a formula and the cast. It’s why Princess Tutu is essential anime.

Boy is that a risky premise. Because to do that, you have to trust viewers to take the first season in good faith.

You wouldn’t be able to pull off Princess Tutu nowadays, with reviewers only giving shows three (and sometimes only one) episodes to sell them. If it’s not a Shonen face-punch show, studios seem reluctant to commit to multiple episodes. 26-episode animes are becoming increasingly uncommon, with thirteen being the norm.

Death Parade is a twelve-episode anime.[1] Less than 288 minutes to tell a complete story, and I’m not calculating out the OP and EP on that. It’s not enough space for the metatextual story it wants to tell. Not enough time to make the audience complacent with the current Judgement system before having someone slide in and say ‘charming fantasy. Now, let’s explore the flaws.’

Decim makes his big judging mistake in the very first episode, and it’s called out in the second episode. I thought of the same objections the Black-haired Girl presented, but was willing to take it for granted the arbitrators were relatively omniscient in their judgement. That’s called into question immediately.

Which would’ve been okay if the thrust of the series (or just the first season) were independent formulaic stories where dead people arrive, play games, remember their lives, and Decim (or other arbiter) makes their judgement while the audience deliberates for themselves how to feel about.

Kind of a Kino’s Journey (2005)[2] thing, you know? No overarching plot for the first 12 episodes. Only in the last episode of part one would someone question the ethics of the situation, then in season two we can unveil and build upon Nona’s schemes. We’d have had the time to know the cast a little better, and give actual weight to attempts to reform it.

Heck, maybe even have time for a solid resolution beyond a ‘Well, that happened I guess’ and Oculus adding a new rule.

Want to go real wild? Have Chiyuki take over Decim’s job at either the end of season one or the end of the series. Either had merits.

As it is… the story is too crowded in the actual twelve episodes we got, so I can only focus on the Death Games, since those were independently strong.

Heck, it was obvious they were intending parallels when Ginti got Mayu hanging around his bar, but the two didn’t receive enough screen time to be properly compared to Decim and Black-Haired Woman.

Do I put too much weight on wanting more episodic shows? No… it’s the industry that���s wrong…

However, this pacing is only the major misstep. The art and animation is fantastic, the writing is good when focused on the gimmick, and the elevator operator manages to toe the line of Yu-Gi-Oh hair yet still remain just understated enough.

Like a good episode of Kino’s Journey, Death Parade doesn’t dictate what your take away should be. It merely presents the story to you, and the actions and reactions of the characters, and lets the viewer reach their own conclusion. When should a character’s sins condemn them to the void? And how can context shift that? Is the extreme situation built into the games a fair way to judge someone’s character?

Admittedly, I’d probably reincarnate everyone except the police detective,[3] but I’m also a softy frightened enough by the concept of oblivion to not wish it on anyone.

The mystery around the Black-Haired Woman is also compelling, even if it ended with the usual generic Test of Character. I like recurring motifs when they’re actually addressed in the plot, and Chavvot was a good example of that.

Maybe if they focused on how the Black-Haired Woman personally would’ve judged the games she was witness to, it would’ve been stronger. There’s parallels to be drawn for most cases: Death Seven Darts has doubt leading a man to self-destruction; Rolling Ballade is a tale of lost opportunity; Death Arcade[4] is literally about unintentionally hurting your family through selfishness; then episodes 8 and 9 are the most emotionally intense as they pose the question “what is justifiable violence?”

Death Parade is plagued by its raw potential, and failure to give a satisfying ending. It’s a series whose soul deserves reincarnation, if I ever saw one.

Okay, that was cheesy, sorry.

Just watch it, if you can do so legally. It’s good!
