why “the Winchesters” feels like fanfiction

I don’t mean this in a negative way but it feels like fic and here’s why:

Mary, John, Carlos, Lata, and Ada (and others to an extent) are 100% found family and an actual ensemble. in Supernatural, family didn’t end in blood but the brothers were the Main Characters and they’d known Bobby since before the start of the show. in the Winchesters, everyone who is working together is doing it because they choose to, and while everyone but John has history together, they fall into a TV Show Ensemble Cast immediately and John’s newness persists only for exposition purposes

because they’re all choosing to work together, they’re all nice to each other, give each other the benefit of the doubt, and generally assume everyone has the same goals and wants to be there and is doing the work

even though it’s the 70s and they don’t have cell phones, they use CB radios, pay phones, and walkies to constantly keep each other updated. the capacity to communicate is almost never an impediment. even when Carlos is trapped in a shadow dimension and Lata is in the house, they can hear each other yelling! 

the main group doesn’t hide info from each other. sure, John and Mary briefly attempt to hide their relationship, and Lata has a Deep Dark Secret she hasn’t told anyone before she put on the bracelet. but when it comes to hunting, they are all info all the time. Ada even shares the risk to her soul! can you imagine someone volunteering that on SPN?! even John’s mom knows about the Akreda and doesn’t for a moment think it’s at all possible John is a murderer! I guess this one is more fanon-vibe than fic, lots of fics are based on people withholding crucial info, but the “SPN but with healthier communication” thing is such a fandom concept

it's weird how in the flashback episodes we never really see sam as an angry kid when we hear so much about how he argued with john nonstop and how vocal he was about hating the life throughout the show, he's always portrayed as kinda timid and quiet.

the only time we see him act out like that (that i remember right now anyway) is in after school special and he spends the entire episode pushing it down and swallowing everything he wants to say until he is finally pushed too far

its almost like sam wasn't a horribly angry child (or adult)

#this goes doubly for early seasons sam who kept getting told he was so filled with rage #i also just think that its kinda bad writing. i feel like the writers forgot that sam was constantly standing up for him and dean never did #im also reading weechesters fics rn and the most frustraiting thing is reading a fic that portrays dean as the rebelious one who stood up t #john for sam #you literally have never watched the show ever #we also never really get to see teen sam which is so hurtful to me personally :( #i know it would have been difficult because sam was 22 in the pilot so people kinda know what teen him and early 20s dean look like #but i prommy people woyld have suspended their disbelief

God I wish I had something coherent to say about hunger as one of spn’s core themes but unfortunately my brain just loops back around to “Sam should have eaten more weird supernatural things to see if they also gave him powers.” (Like maybe Lucifer’s blood idk idk)

literally every main character has autistic traits and ptsd let's be real.

#Dean has bpd too which is significant to how he interacts and copes and all #Sam has OCD and an inability to like. make his symptoms not obvious when he is in danger. Dean's fawn response is really attuned #which probably really impacted how he did develop #Cas's autism is like the most obvious to people it seems but i would argue Sam has like. a LOT of autistic symptoms especially earlier on #that like overlap with his OCD (meanwhile Dean's got adhd symptoms but some of them are more from his bpd #but that doesnt mean theyre not real and then his adhd overlaps with autism and his bpd they kind of. like these arent clear line) #the thing about Dean is tv taught him how to feel now real life has no appeal and also he has to get the starring role heart is nuclear love #is all that he fears etc #electra heart boy #i would also argue if you are boiling it down to one primary diagnosis it would he dean: bpd sam: ocd cas: autism with the assumption they #all have ptsd #but i think that's needlessly reductive #main thing is sam did not develop bpd and dean did not develop ocd but they both have symptoms of overlap in comorbidities #incoherents #spn #supernatural #also Jack has like. autism and perhaps ocd too but its hard to tell bc he spedran Sam's trauma at once 😭😭

What bugs me about Mary hate is. There's no pleasing the people that hate her they just want to hate her. She face backlash in seasons 1 and 2 for being this idealized figure with no personality other than "maternal" so then she gets written to fight back against that critique in seasons 4&5, at which point people say she's bad for rebelling against Samuel (while Sam was praised for rebelling against John) or that she literally and consciously sold Sam to azazel when if you look at her interactions with azazel in 4.03, she literally only consents to let him in the house in 10 years, when kids were not part of her plan. And then in 5.16, John leaves and nobody bats an eye, but in the flashbacks on season 12, when Mary leaves baby Dean with john, she's this abusive neglectful mother.

And then when she's brought back!

Oh, people hate her because she's weird and distant! But how was she supposed to be? Because if she was maternal to men older than her, she'd be accused of being patronizing and infantilizing them!

Like, hot take, but if you're unceremoniously resurrected against your will and your children are now older than you... mayhaps you're absolved of your parenting responsibilities

listen I have to speak my truth I have to #bereal with all of you who write sibling relationships where the youngest was raised by the oldest as a younger sibling raised by my older sibling. I do not think of them as my "Mom" or my "Dad", I have not nor will I ever accidentally call them dad. I don't celebrate them on mothers or fathers day, I don't want to call them mom or dad because they're not. my mom or dad?

And everyone who grew up in a similar situation is going to have different feelings on it, hell I have complicated feelings on it. (They're not my parent but they're the closest thing I'll ever have to a parent but they are Definitely Not My Dad but also I am their kid ect and so forth). but it's like this weird thing I see where the only way people can grasp a concept like "raised by a family member" is "they must think of them as Parent™" when that has never rung true for me.

Especially because we aren't that far apart in age so this idea that this person who you also tell to kys and send penis memes too is my parent is weird like no they're my Sibling. Yes they set my bedtime and made me dinner and checked my hw but they're also the person who I rebelled against our parents with.

And I think a lot of it stems from this idea in fandom that "found family" means "nuclear family" so people can't really grasp non traditional familial relationships like "raised by older sibling." A huge part of why this rubs me the wrong way is this idea that the "dad/mom" is the Bigger more important relationship so that's got to be what they Want to call their sibling when. no. Like you don't need a Dad and a Mom and the 2.5 kids in your family dynamics sometimes you just need yourself and your weird older sibling who convinced you to eat a entire sheet of construction paper per day for an entire week because you need the fiber.
