discussion of mental health and self harm in detail //
i used to be so big on the idea of ‘sadkasa’ but people have completely taken the concept and beaten it with a bat.. the term sadkasa alone is being used to simplify the idea if tsukasa having self esteem issues and a dangerously altruistic mindset just to him being sad or upset and its like missing the point completely. tsukasa isnt “sad” and he doesn’t let himself cry but thats just another way mental health manifests. but also like, you dont have to be sad to self harm. and you can also self harm in unconscious ways. a lot of people are shocked when uncovering traumas in therapy because they admit to unconscious self harming such as descriptions of overworking themselves or engaging in escapism. masking uncomfortable emotions can be a form of self harm and its quite evident in tsks case that he isnt letting himself vent and feel upset because he feels as though its a burden to others and his goals. hes also constantly working on shows and entertaining others, and it doesnt go away when he gets home. id say tsukasas home is the place where this manifests the worst because he has an obligation to saki. saki is where all of this stems from, wanting to make her smile. his positivity is toxic and we can even see it in hinamatsuri when tsks chooses not to acknowledge saki’s uncomfortableness with the idea of new hina dolls because he thinks it will make her happy. also acting like tsukasas positivity is fake is untrue, it clearly waivers but he truly believes that putting his best self forward makes others happy—pop in my heart shows the reinforcement of the cycle of dangerous self improvement because when someone around him is upset or uncomfortable, he pushes his feelings further and further back and separating his self from his person.

something that irks me a tiny bit about sekai/group/unit swap aus (specifically in the context of n25 swaps) is how when a character is placed into n25 sekai, sometimes they just become completely devoid of personality?
like i love love love exploring the deeper/more psychologically stimulating part of a character’s personality and more unpleasant desires and maybe some of the angst because at its core that’s what n25 swaps are meant to be to me. but ive seen some people take characters that are full of vibrant personality and life and reduce them to husks, which can be narratively very cool and fun to delve into, but a lot of people dont take full advantage of the potential possibilities for character exploration and its very unfortunate to me.
i worry that part of it is because n25 is seen as the “stoic/depressive group” compared to the others, which isn’t entirely false but it does lack some merit; mizuki and ena are full of life and joy and they, along with kanade, have tangible hopes and dreams and desires. id argue one of the only negative underlying themes among all of them is the desire to disappear. and i’m all for angst with no/little plot and my opinions do not make your hcs/aus any less valid, this is just something ive noticed that i felt like sharing my opinion on.

Random question anon here again
If you could make one what would be your dream mixed event?
hello again random question anon, always nice to hear from you
I'm really torn between two for this one. my first idea (and the one i think is more likely to happen) is a Mafuyu/Honami centric event. They're really similar if you think about it, they're like two sides of the same coin. Mirror characters I guess you could call them. Honami who let people walk all over her and fell into a depression but was able to be helped vs Mafuyu who did the same thing but fell too deep. I think Mafuyu could learn a bit from Honami, and obviously Mafuyu is living with the person Honami is a housekeeper for, so I get the feeling that they'll get to meet properly eventually. i think kanade could work here as well obviously, as the linking factor between the two, and then maybe another leo/need member. i'd say ichika but then that'd make this a repeat of Intersecting Melodies so maybe Saki. She's a great contrast to Mafuyu and I think letting them see each other's worldviews could be interesting.
idea 2 is Mizuki/Rui/Ena/Tsukasa simply because narrative parallels world domination. a bit of a self-indulgent pick but i just really like narrative paralles if the fact my last one was also narrative parallels didn't give it away. i think maybe a bit more could be given to mizuki and rui's middle school friendship because really the most we ever got was a few brief flashbacks in kamikou festival. also it'd just be really nice to see them just talk about how far they've come and the fact that they have friends who love them now and they're happy for each other, because I feel like it would be more impactful now than when it happened 101 events ago. idk what ena and tsukasa would do here they're just here for narrative parallels.

YIPPEE ok . funni rhythm game . project sekai. its got miku . the only important background lore here is: there's kind of another world called "sekai" that is made from either strong emotions, or the shared will/dreams/desire/etc of a group. there are 5 units/groups/whatever. 2 of the sekais in the game were made by One Person. one's the clown group dw abt that. but Mafuyu !! fuyu made her own sekai. i thiiiiiink out of her desire to "disappear"?
anyway. mafuyu asahina. silly lil girlie. she is so depressed man. her mother sucks and is constantly pushing her to be the perfect straight-A student and train to be a doctor, and in public fuyu DOES put up that facade (in-game she has two very distinct voices - a more upbeat, happy one, and this very quiet, almost mumbley-one. in lives she'll use her Public Voice when talking to anyone that isn't of her unit)
so ! fuyu. she wants to make music. and train to be a nurse not a doctor. but her mother is super manipulative and controlling (and thats a theme you see across her cards too. in her first event she's literally depicted as a marionette for example) and really has no real control of her life. and then she meets Niigo. because kanade savior complex go brr
so. nightcord at 25:00, or niigo as they're called in the jp fandom, is made up of Kanade Yoisaki, Mizuki Akiyama, Ena Shinonome, and Mafuyu Asahina. they originally only know each other online (kanade finds fuyu thru her music which kanade notes is very dark and depressing, and later resolves to create a piece of music that will make mafuyu smile and bring back some joy into her life. tbh idk abt the other two i uh. am bad at reading lmao) but !! they talk on Nightcord (its discord) until they all meet in the Sekai. which is fucken EMPTY. there is NOTHIN THERE. and its Mafuyu's Sekai. so given the Empty Void that has been remarked upon that it's very easy to get lost and never find your way out .......yeah
so . as the events progress you get to see mafuyu come out of her shell more as she hangs out with niigo. her mom is. Not Happy (when is she ever smh) and in one event her mom even throws out her music equipment and laptop (iirc) claiming that it's a "distraction", and tells her to stop hanging out w/ niigo bc they're "bad influences" (or smth). mafuyu, obv, does Nyat do this and continues talking to the others.
a few events later mafuyu finally reaches her breaking point and stands up to her mother . and then promptly flees to live with kanade after everything she had to deal with. so now kanade & mafuyu live together ! but mafuyu rlly is making progress like despite it all, in newer cards/depictions you can even see light in her eyes !!!
but yeah shes . shes my silly. and so like. Gender to me. her and mizuki (canon transfem/nb person btw. go mizuki go!!!!!!!!) got a duet version of the song "Villain" which is literally abt bein fucken. trans. u can't just put the Canon Transgirl in with the Transmasc Vibes Character in a Song About Being Trans, man /j
i lov her tho shes doin her best. she kind of lost all sense of identity due to having to be what her mother wanted her to be, and niigo is slowly helping her figure out who she is, not who her mother wants her to be. its very nice
compared to the other stories niigo's is. way more deep and intense. but ! they all have their Things :3
anyway yeah im insane abt mafuyu asahina this has been my tedtalk i need to go to bed
OHHH she sounds awesome fuck yeah :) very glad that she is happier these days...love that . i really do need to play project sekai honestly i tried one time but i got too used to the enstars format for rhythym games and i sucked absolute balls at it. anyway gn bff <3

elaborating on my last post ab luka. so
luka doesn't really fit into the "younger than mafuyu" or "older than mafuyu" category. instead, i think she's supposed to represent mafuyu's classmates + "friends" who she interacts with. i mean we know that she has to always put up some sort of facade for these people, so it makes sense, at least to me, that she sees them as always causing some sort of problem. BUT ALSO !!!
i think luka, while representing her classmates, also plays a part in helping mafuyu as well !! unlike her classmates, Luka is always saying what she means, breaking up the norm, and generally just joking around with mafuyu. because none of the kids at school do that. they just see mafuyu as "genius hard working classmate !!" and leave it at that !! but luka is what mafuyu wishes the kids at school would do with her: connect on a level that isn't just because she's smart, and wanting to just. mess around !! mafuyu also says that luka reminds her the most of kanade. and i think this is because kanade is also fighting to have mafuyu seen as a person and not a tool !! they're both trying to make mafuyu feel human through human connections.
also shoutout to @ladylolalilly for mentioning that kaito and meiko in the empty sekai are kind of like what mafuyu wants in the adults around her bc that really helped w my silly luke theory. this also made me think ab wxs. i compare these a lot bc 1. wxs and nightcord are the only stories i've fully read and 2. both sekais are only created through one person's feelings. i think that's also why they represent such dramatic and polar oposite feelings ??? like, mmj's sekai is cutesy type shit, leo/need's are "cool", and vbs' "COOL". and all three of those units have pretty specific desires! mmj is "we want to become idols", leoneed is "we want to become a band", and vivid bad squad's is "we want to SURPASS RAD WEEKEND :fire: :fire:". but wxs and n25 are both SUPER opposite in "super happy happy all da time" and "depression.". even their wants !!! Mafuyu's feelings for the sekai being made are purely for herself, she doesn't want to help anyone but wants the sekai to help HER !! meanwhile tsukasa's wants are purely for other people !! he wants everyone ELSE to smile !! idk how to describe it but those two just contrast so nicely to me like you don't even know.

shiraishi--kanade · 28 days
Note
I don't remember if you've done it before, but could you talk about your url? Like where did "shiraishi kanade" come from? Is it implying like smth like kanade being a shiraishi sibling or smth like that? :0 or parallels?
I'm not caught up on all the stories so idk if they've ever met but I wanna hear about how you imagine their interactions and dynamic if that's OK! Or about their parallels if that's what it's about. Or both if you feel like it HAHDHA /nf
Oh this is such a nice question to receive honestly!
There's not much thought behind shiraishi-kanade as much as me just mashing two of my favourite characters' names together, seeing how it sounds and then also discovering it is by some miracle not taken yet. It flows much nicer than yoisaki-an, no?
That said I absolutely love Shiraishi sibling Kanade hcs/fics as well so you're not far off! I have an AU of my own where Ken and Yuka are Kanade's foster parents until (or if 👀) her dad gets better because in that universe child protection services are a little bit more sensible. Mashing a depressed teenager who misses her family more than anything and blames herself for her dad's illness, another teenager with abandonment issues who unbeknownst to her just lost a member of her family and also has a very idealised idea of an older sister, a grieving foster dad and an absolutely shocked by all of those circumstances mom together goes about as well as one might expect (not at all, but they all heal and learn).
That said I absolutely love Kanade and An parallels, they very much have some! They're both musically gifted, both of their families had musician dads and non-musician moms, both of them have taken on the legacy of the ones who are no longer able to carry it, both are hard workers to the point of pushing themselves beyond their limits, but because of different circumstances and different upbringings they react to it completely differently. They also differ in a way that Kanade appears utterly selfless but in truth has a selfish streak inside her, accounting for her saviour complex; on the other hand, An who is brash and outspoken on the outside has a very vulnerable and selfless heart. Their arc go a little bit against each other (learning to truly care about people Kanade claims to want to save & An learning to accept her own feelings, including the ugly ones) but then are also similar in some ways that my mind is too hazy to recall right now. And also, grief. A whole load of it. They're such an interesting pair to spin and rotate in my mind.
That said they actually haven't properly met in canon, of which I've expressed my grief extensively. They are aware of each other's existence because of the Hermit event (where this Kanade untrained is from) and have seen each other perform a couple times, but unfortunately nothing more than that. Which is a pity! They would make great friends in my opinion. Which is also why I have more than one shuffle au where they are teammates.

Final part (5) Nightcord at 25:00; N25; Niigo; 25-ji; 25-ji, Nightcord de.; 25時、ナイトコードで。Whatever you wanna call them it's the nocturnal and depressive group.
Let's start with their leader Kanade, so starting of strong I have reason to believe Kanade is actually ambidextrous.
Tumblr media
here she is clearly shown to be using her right hand to write
Tumblr media
but here she uses the fork with her left
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the chopsticks are in both pictures in her left hand
Tumblr media
but here she's using her fork in her right hand
Tumblr media
and the chopsticks are also in her right hand
Tumblr media
in this 4koma she uses a fok in her right hand
and just to be 100% sure I even checked Petit Sekai the chibi animated series and look what I found in episode 10.
Tumblr media
Kanade is holding the chopsticks in her left hand.
This constant change in which hand she uses is pretty consistent throughout all the different sources leading me to belive that she is ambidextrous.
Now Mafuyu, let's see if she's also gonna send me on a scavenger hunt for evidence. In the Petit Sekai screenshot we can see Mafuyu using the chopsticks in her right hand.
Tumblr media
Same thing with this card (bless the shinonomes)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
spoon and fork are also used in her right and if you really wanna search there is the 2nd anniversary card, not Mafuyu's but Rui's;
Tumblr media
she's holding a pair of scissors in her right hand.
I think it's safe to assume that Mafuyu is right handed which would also make sense thematically. Back in the day, left handed people were seen as defective and wrong and were forced to use their right hand but Mafuyu is this perfect student which would include her being right handed. It just wouldn't make sense for her to be left handed in any way even if you go the route of her having to conform and be perfect, but that is not what her story is about. Shizuku's story would be more like that; she's not perfect but she has to be. Mafuyu on the other hand is perfect from a societal viewpoint; she has talent is diligent and studious and does what she is told. Mafuyu doesn't struggle with being perfect, Mafuyu struggles with finding happiness and meaning in that perfection, she struggles with her sense of self outside of the perfect student. Her problem is that she doesn't want to be perfect but she is. So it just wouldn't make any sense to have her be left handed. Anyway, this thread was supposed to be about random fun facts and not analyzing character story themes, my bad.
In a previous post I already established that Mizuki and Ena are both most likely right handed but just to make sure I'll provide some more evidence starting with Ena.
She's an easy one. Ena draws so we see her using a pen or similar quite a lot and in Mafuyu's part we already saw Ena using the chopsticks with her right hand. But other moments include
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like there is this but considering it's this one image vs literally everything else I believe it might be a fluke
Tumblr media
and even then in the cover art for their album it's like this
Tumblr media
It's literally the same card set and Ena is holding the brush in her right hand. I think that one might be a fluke.
Now Mizuki, as said before I have concluded that Mizuki is right handed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and that's all there is. Mizuki has nothing else that would show they favour one hand over the other but I'll take it.
So now series conclusion:
Leo/need are all right handed MMJ are also right handed VBS are all right handed Tsukasa and Emu are right handed Nene is ambidextrous favouring her right hand Rui is ambidextrous favouring his left hand Kanade is ambidextrous with no preferance Mafuyu, Ena and Mizuki are right handed
part 1 | part 2 | part 3 | part 4 | part 5

Random Thoughts About Kanade and Mafuyu
Lately, I've been obsessing over Kanade and Mafuyu's friendship, since I love picking apart relationships like theirs. Although, of course, I don’t support Kanamafu, I find Kanade’s and Mafuyu’s relationship fascinating from a critical standpoint. Of course, they’re not a very healthy relationship; they’re codependent to the point where either one of them may die without the other to save them.
But like other Project Sekai relationships, they’re based on the same ideal of inspiring hope in each other, even if their relationship is a twisted form of hope. Kanade and Mafuyu care about each other because they give each other hope to follow their own dreams, even if they couldn’t care less about the other themselves. This is obvious with Mafuyu. Even if she does care about Kanade in a limited sense, Mafuyu expresses that she primarily cares that Kanade has the capacity to save Mafuyu with music. She’s apathetic towards Kanade herself to the point where the latter is surprised when Mafuyu expresses that she cares about Kanade's well-being, which Mafuyu only does because she is in her "good girl" mode.
However, it’s less obvious with Kanade. After all, her whole goal is to save Mafuyu, right? What could be less caring? However, she simply views Mafuyu as someone that she can save to alleviate her own guilt from hurting her dad, rather than as someone she cares about as an individual. She wants to save someone with music, and she simply knows that Mafuyu is someone that she can save. If she can save Mafuyu, then Kanade can prove to herself that her music does more than simply harm people.
But neither of these goals are fully obtainable. Mafuyu cannot be saved with music alone. The reason she's improving during her story quests is because she finally has a support system, not music that she had even during her lowest peak. And even if Kanade managed to save Mafuyu, that would not ensure that Kanade overcame her trauma from her father's depression. She would still feel obligated to do more past the point of reason to help others with her music.
Of course, I don’t think that either Kanade or Mafuyu are in the wrong. It's a codependent relationship, and neither of them know how to let go without their mental state becoming even worse. Although I'm rooting for both of them on their own, I just hope that they can one day find peace, whether through fixing their relationship, finding a mentor figure who can help each of them through their problems, or making other friendships outside of each other.
This is *not* meant to disrespect Kanamafu shippers! I simply wanted to ramble about my take on their relationship, and I understand that other people have different perspectives. Everyone is welcome to their own perspectives; I simply wanted to share mine.

This is a friendly reminder that this might not exactly how the game interprets this, and this is just a personal analysis I had thought up during my own time! If I'm missing something, please let me know. :D
I always wondered why and how the Wonderland Sekai and the Empty Sekai were the only ones created due to Tsukasa and Mafuyu's feelings. I believe it was said "that their feelings were so strong, they were able to create them."
That didn't really? Exactly make sense to me in a way? Cause all of the other Wanshow members love performing, and all the Niigo characters all have their own issues involving mental health. How can their feelings be considered "not as strong as the other original owner"? Especially compared to the other groups. It sounded like their feelings and experiences were being compared in a way because, yes, Mafuyu is depressed but Kanade also lost her mother while her father doesn't even remember her.
I thought about it for a while and thought that it's not really about having stronger feelings, it's more of "3 of these members are suppressing their own feelings while there's 1 who isn't."
For Wanshow, Emu was hiding the fact that she wanted to save Phoenix Wonderland, Nene was afraid of singing in front of others, while Rui wanted to show off his inventions and ideas. Ever since he was a child, Tsukasa always aimed to become a star and was always acting. His feelings never died and that's how he was able to create the Wonderland Sekai. It's interesting cause despite it originating from Tsukasa's feelings, it's usually referred to as "everyone's Sekai', which means that being able to express their feelings as well, it became a Sekai not only to Tsukasa but to everyone in Wanshow as well.
Now, the Empty Sekai is still referred to as Mafuyu's, and that makes sense. While Mafuyu hides her depression from everyone who isn't Niigo, she still carries it and doesn't suppress her feelings. Kanade focuses on saving Mafuyu and didn't really have anyone helping her with her family: Ena, at the time, felt inadequate about her own talent, while Mizuki hides their own feelings. Unlike Mafuyu, however, who hides her depression from her expressions, the other three shove their feelings away and pretend they don't exist. That's why Mafuyu calls the rest out like that in the Main Story. But the Empty Sekai starts changing, little by little, because all the members added small things in, then the Vocaloids/Virtual Singers started appearing, first with Rin, then ending with Kaito.
I think someone could argue that MMJ is similar, but to me, it's not. Excluding Minori, the other three members thought they had lost that feeling of being an idol, but they never actually did, and when meeting Minori, they realized that passion was still there. It that makes sense at all and has any differences to what I was talking about above.
The Sekais in the game are so interesting to think about, and I hope we get to explore them more!

Leak?? Irdk
K so honestly this set’s kinda boring…
But I love it no matter what bc my pookies are there
Kanade’s card ate but literally every other card is boring 🙃
I do wanna know why Mafuyu looks so depressed here tho lol
Also for a split second I was like “where’s mafuyu” because we’ve never seen the other side of Kanade’s kitchen/living room, I swore she was back at her house for a sec lol.

Me and my friend had a crazy idea. Since every prsk character is depressed and needs therapy, could a sekai be representing therapy through music???
I would love to hear your thoughts on this!!!
I don't think it's a crazy idea at all and I would say there's definitely truth to that statement actually! The Vocaloids in each SEKAI all exist to help the characters reflect on and understand their feelings, even the SEKAI themselves do this sometimes (e.g: the sky in School SEKAI changing with the girls' feelings, the stuffed toys in Wonderland SEKAI being influenced by the troupe's emotions). While not all the character's problems are solved directly through music, music and community does tie it all together, and of course, the SEKAI is directly tied to Vocaloid. So yeah, the SEKAI does seem like a stand-in for music therapy, even more so when you consider that songs based on the character's emotions actually manifest within the SEKAI. I think this whole system helps them a lot with processing their emotions and understanding themselves, in the same way therapy does.
I do just wanna correct one thing there and say that not every character is depressed. Yes, they all have their low points, but no way are they all depressed. You look at someone like Kohane, who I would consider one of the most mentally healthy characters. She's very she and has quite low self-esteem early on in the story, but I wouldn't say she was depressed at any point.
I do think though, since they are all in that later part of their teenage years where you're getting closer to adulthood and there's just so much stuff going on, that the SEKAI are a really good outlet for them. They just need to get their feelings out sometimes and therapy can be really good for people in that age range even if you aren't depressed or otherwise mentally ill.
I think Empty SEKAI is the most obvious example of being a theraputic sekai. Even if it's not conventional or the greatest at times. Most of the virtual singers are standoffish and definitely don't handle things in the right way, but they still do help the characters come to terms with their feelings. Specifically outlining KAITO in immiscible discord here. Don't want to spoil it for people who haven't read it so I'll be quite vague. But that is not how you handle a situation like Mafuyu's. Yes, it was something she needed to face, and deep down knew (KAITO is derived from Mafuyu after all), but he was extremely harsh on her when what he was telling her should've probably been let down on her much lighter. I'm not to familiar with the work that the event song is based on but it shows that Mafuyu is slowly accepting what KAITO was telling her - she hates what she has become because of how she let people treat her and even if she isn't ready to outwardly accept it entirely yet, deep down she has, and the SEKAI has created this song to help her reach that acceptance. The song is surprisingly aggressive which makes a lot of sense when you consider that KAITO is the featured vocaloid.
On the better side of Empty SEKAI you have Miku. Miku is really interesting to me because she is mainly a source of comfort rather than a guide or a therapist. She's always there for Mafuyu and will do anything Mafuyu wants or needs. Because, especially when the SEKAI manifested, Mafuyu just needed something. Miku is actually very similar to Mafuyu in that she doesn't feel a whole lot and she's learning about all these new emotions at the same time as Mafuyu re-learns them. It's a journey they're taking together and although it's not conventional, I think it helps Mafuyu a lot to just have someone there to walk the same path as her.
I think it's especially interesting that the only song in the SEKAI at first was the one Kanade wrote. Although she wanted the other Niigo members to stay out of her business at the time, the song still meant something to her. There was someone who cared enough to try. She didn't truly grasp that that was how she felt, but Miku did, even if she wasn't entirely aware of it either. Music is an integral part of Mafuyu's recovery in particular, since not only do N25 and OWN act as a way for her to put her unspoken feelings into words, but the SEKAI can do it for her - it can get all those repressed emotions out of her since the SEKAI is her in a way, and I think it's such an effective way for her to confront how she really feels and slowly understand and recover from her depression.
So in conclusion I think you're right OP and I went REALLY offtopic there sorry about that I just ended up getting into the feel of it.
This is worded really badly bc it's late and I'm tired but I hope it's still kinda understandable
If any of the immiscible discord stuff is wrong 1. i'm tired 2. i read the event through google translate so correct me if im talking bullshit
